Uninstalled programs still listed

Question: Uninstalled programs still listed

I used the Add/Remove Programs to uninstall several programs and they were and are, no longer showing in the Control Panel listing. I obviously thought they had been successfully removed. Whilst trying to find something else on my PC, using Start, right-click Explore etc, I found these same programs still listed. Can I just delete them again from this list and will they be gone for good then? And do you know why they are still listed at all if theoretically they are already uninstalled?

Preferred Solution: Uninstalled programs still listed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I recently installed and uninstalled a program. However, the entry for the program still remains in the Installed Programs list in the Control Panel. I have examined the Registry keys under uninstall and I cannot find this program listed there to be manually deleted. How do I remove this entry? Any advice is appreciated.

Answer:Uninstalled program still listed in Installed Programs

have you done a reboot since you uninstalled the program?
Only time ive had this happen, there has been remainders of the program in program files. Deleting them solved the issue for me.

out of interest what is the program? ill do some searching to see if this is a common issue.

Hi,
I have uninstalled apps that are still listed in control panel's add/remove. if i click on it to remove it there it says it can't.
Two are games which had their own uninstall
one is Kazaa which i used Ad-aware to remove
one is Norton Systemworks 2001 (which i plan to reinstall, but not sure if i can if it's still on the system here)

How do I make sure they are completely uninstalled and how do I get them off this listing?
kimm

Answer:uninstalled programs still listed in control panel

Ad-Aware doesn't remove Kazaa. Only the spyware associated with it.

If you're unable to uninstall Kazaa through Add-remove Software , I'd advise you to reinstall Kazaa, reboot, uninstall it again, and afterwards run Ad-Aware to get rid of the associated spyware.

As for things you uninstalled the correct way, but which are nevertheless still shown in the Add-remove Software list, go to Start/Run, and type Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/microsoft/windows/CurrentVersion/uninstall, find the Adsgone 'folder', or Registry (sub)key, which in fact it is, highlight it, and hit delete.

Third party programs like TweakUI and RegCleaner also allow you to do that, if you don't feel like editing the registry manually.

Good luck,

It began when I was browsing and out-of-the-blue a popup saying "HDD Failure - etc. etc. We recommend you restart your machine" came up, it looked legit so I checked out my PC to see some desktop items (not all) had dissappeared. Naturally I restarted machine and went on my normal user;

- my desktop was completely black and their were no icons, their were only a few programs listed in all programs aswell.

- A program called "Windows XP Fix" was running, it was obviously false software, I managed to delete its root (i think) from All Users / Application Data / 01032483.exe (or something)

- A program called browser+ was in my All Programs which it let me uninstall.

- If i go to a different user there's desktop icons and i can use my browser (still limited All Programs though) but if i click on a link it sends me to different web pages like canadasasquach.com or matalan.com (lol?) it's really messed :/)

Stuff is attached I appreciate your help <3

I have been noticing some ridiculous lag that occurs at seemingly random times. It's not as bad as it was before I ran malwarebytes; however I still get random spikes of lag. Usually when this happens I see certain programs in the task manager that I almost never see. They are listed below:

dllhost.exe *32 (multiple instances)
dpnsvr.exe *32
dllhst3g *32
ctfmon.exe *32
NAPSTAT.exe
logagent.exe
msfeedssync.exe

I'm running Windows 7 and a few months back had to remove Snap.do and some other unwanted programs.  I managed to get them off, I beleive.  I'm not sure, but I beleive I had to delete some folders to get them off fully. Subsequent Superantispyware runs did not report any unwanted programs.
This morning Avast alerted me Snap.do was back.  I opened a browser and confirmed the home page was hijacked.  Avast said it could remove it for me and when I looked, the home page was back and Snap.do wasn't on my list of programs in control panel>prorams and features.
I ran malware bytes and nothing too bad was found.  I ran Superantispyware and it reported regcleaner pro, Advanced Sysrem Protector and AppsHat Mobile Apps were installed.  I let the Super antispyware try to remove them and also cleaned out some tracking cookies.  I cehcked programs and the 3 weren't there.  Re-running Super antispyware however keeps reporting they're in my system.
Any ideas?  Was my original removal not successful?  Can these apps hide?

Hello Splungee, this one is a bit tricky. Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic. If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. I reinstalled Windows XP. For some reason, all of my old programs show up in Windows Explorer, but not in the Start Menu or in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

Hey, i assume when you re-installed XP you attempted to keep your programs?

When re-installing XP i believe the registry is re-written, which would account for them being missing from the Add/Remove programs panel.

As for the start menu, star menu entries can be found in these two directories:

Code:
C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu
C:/Documents and Settings/[Your Username]/Start Menu
i'm assuming they've been re-written too, if the programs still run then all you need to do is drag a shortcut to the main EXE into one of them folders, if they don't i suggest you re-install them.

Could you clarify how you re-installed XP? did you choose some non-destructive re-install(in order to keep your programs)?

Cheers,
Jamey

Some (3, out of maybe 20) of my installed Programs, all working perfectly well, are not listed in Control Panel -> Programs and Features.

Any ideas on how to rectify this, please?

Thank you.

Answer:Some installed Programs not listed in Programs and Features...

Some programs do not really "Install" by using normal installation process by writing entries in the Registry and so don't show up as uninstallable. "Portable programs" are an example. If they don't have Uninstall.exe (or similar file) in it's folder, you can just delete folder and shortcut.

Hello you really nice people. Since you have helped me on several occasions, I thought I'd try one more time.

I don't know exactly when it happened; however, at some point after I installed winXP as a dual boot and have been trying out some dvd burning software, I cannot add/remove programs in win2000... it states that "no programs are currently installed on this computer."

I have tried spybot (which found a few things and have been repaired)... I have tried Norton PC Doctor (which found a few things, all of which could not necessarily be repaired) and as a last resort I downloaded a freeware program Add/Remove Programs to get my program uninstalled.

In the midst of all this, I foolishly installed service pack 4 and then had to promptly uninstall it (I think it was a conflict with my video capture card -- got the blue screen of death at reboot [even in safe mode!!]). I was able to uninstall that because I had the good sense to back up and let it give me the uninstall option.

Any other ideas ??? I am going blind trying to follow the msn knowledge base suggestions checking the registry...

I don't know what information you need from me to try and help me out, so if you need any logs or stuff that I see other people post, please let me know how to capture that information for you as well... I'm pretty computer smart, just not really troubleshooting experienced... in other words, I just build em and learn as I go along.

Someone out there has to know how to resolve this stupid error. I just know it's something simple that I don't know about... or as I always say... it's just something stupid... it almost always is.

Recently i installed a program that was only intended for use for a very short period of time, and after i uninstalled it and deleted all the programs files manually, it was still in the add programs menu! there are multiple programs that have done this for me, and it is an extreme nuisance. Is there any way, any way, possible that i can remove these icons (and i mean anything) this program did not come with a "uninstall" option, so i am at a loss

Answer:Programs will not leave the Add programs menu even when uninstalled!

Welcome to TSG forums.
The best way to remove a program is to open control panel, select add/remove programs, scroll to the desired program, click on remove and let the computer do its thing. Occassionally I have had to remove a shortcut icon from the desk top, but usually when removing the program as described, all is removed.

Question: Listed programs

Programs listed in Programs are different than programs listed on the Install/change window.
1. What are the differences in these two program listings?
2. What determines where a program is listed?
Thanks

Answer:Listed programs

Hello Moose,

The Programs and Features (Control Panel) window will only include installed programs that have a uninstall option. Most do these days though.

I'm not sure what location you mean with "Programs". If you mean the C:\Programs Files folder, then the programs that come with Windows 7 will not be listed in Programs and Features.

Please post back with more details on that location so we can take a look to see for you.

Adobe AIR is not a program per se, so it's not listed in programs list.See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Integrated_RuntimeIf you're not a developer, you can safely uninstall it.

My Windows 10 START button shows an alphabetical listing of programs on my PC, but some are missing - how come? Is there a way for Win 10 to display ALL of my executable files (including any that I've downloaded and installed) ?

For example, my vlc.exe program (from VIDEOLAN) is not under the "V" listing as I'd expected.

Answer:Win 10: not all programs are alphabetically listed

Mine have newly installed progs (must call them "apps" nowadays!) at the top, then "most used"... for goodness sake just list in alphabetical order, then we know where we are - or where they are

Microsoft are garbling things and hiding things and generally taking us backwards, grrrr.

I expect someone knows how to sort out the programs list, tho - I'm thinking of installing Start10 (or there's a similar one that's free), but not until I get this darn laptop completely set up for my needs.

Free version of Revo uninstaller doesn't show it either!
Windows Explorer/program files does not show them!
When I click Start/All programs/ Either software, it opens.

I believe they don't take much hard drive space. But, it is annoying that I cannot get rid of them.
What should I do without messing my computer?

I have backed up a friends data and used the dreaded red floppy to restore to factory settings. The Packard Bell software appeared to do this successfully and I then set about trying to remove various programs from add/remove. Virtually nothing was listed! For example Adobe Reader 5 is installed and working on the computer but doesn`t appear nor is it listed in All Programs. As basically all the preinstalled software. (Power DVD is listed in All Programmes but again not in Add/Remove)I`ve googled but can`t seem to find a clue - it sounds like a registry problem. Anyone experienced this before?

Answer:Add/Remove Programs Not Listed

The Add & Remove data is located in the registry & as you have reverted back to factory setting the registry no longer contains information regarding the programs that were installed after factory default. You could try re-installing the programs you want to remove & hopefully you should then be able to remove them.

Hoping some one can assist... Just got my new Vista Ultimate x64 computer. I'm new to Vista and learned that the system sets up 2 program files: one for 64x bit and 1 for 32 bit programs. My issue is HP has loaded a whole slew of crapware and I want to clean it out... I can see it in the x86 files (as well as numerous shortcuts on my desktop) but I cannot find the programs in the add/remove program utility. I had CCleaner as well and they are not listed in there either.

Additionally, when I navigate to the programs I do not see any options to uninstall. Is there a way to get these programs sitting in the x86 folder to show up in my uninstall list?

Some examples of what I'd like to remove are:
Easy Bits for Kids
JunoPreloader
MSN toolbar
Netzero preloader
Online Services
Ebay

If I just delete these folders from the x86 folder they dont uninstall, correct?

any direction or assistance is greatly appreciated.. Thanks!

Answer:Uninstalling x86 programs: not listed

think I solved my issue.. I dont think the items in question are really installed.. they are trials so they just link in to the shortcuts. I deleted the shortcuts and removed the folders in the program list.. we'll see..

Answer:program i did not install listed under programs?

Hello Billy,

"Search Protection" looks like one of those extra options not paid attention to that get installed while installing another program. I'd recommend to uninstall this garbage.

Search Protection by Spigot - Should I Remove It?

?The Spigot Search Settings is an application which is part of the Spigot Toolbar. Spigot searchsettings.exe'spurpose is to check periodically your default search engine and restore it to Yahoo in case you agreed to set it to Yahoo in the first place and another application is trying to change it. It's easy to uninstall Spigot Inc Seach Settings at any time. Since the application is part of the toolbar, you must uninstall the Spigot toolbar and that will remove all tracks of searchsettings.exe spigot. Removing a Spigot toolbar from the control panel is easy - Just follow the steps below. Neither the Toolbar nor search settings Spigot Inc are not Spigot Malware, they are simple programs that can be removed easily from your machine. The toolbar communicates with our servers from time to time to check for available software updates such as bug fixes, patches, enhanced functions and new versions. Hi, My OS is wondows 7. and I found out that there are only a few programs listed in my control panel/add remove programs. The programs are those that have been installed within the last 2 weeks. All the other programs installed before than that have been gone from the list.I don't know what happened. How can I have all the programs listed in add/remove programs? Thanks, J

Answer:There are only a few programs listed in add/remove prog

Also make sure you are logged in as administrator. If you use (preferred) normal user for daily use and many of the programs were installed as administrator or before you started using a limited user account, they may not show up unless you are logged in as administrator. Also when you look for restore options, not that you should have a 'button' to "Show More Restore Points". If you do, then you will be able to see all of your restore points.By default your system should reserve 12% of your disk space for your restore points. Less than 8% (unless you have a very large disk) is not generally recommended. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

When I try to select Outlook as default from the Default Programs list, it's not even on the list. It also isn't listed in the Associations. When I click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of my screen, a menu opens. At the bottom of that menu is a line that says "all programs". It opens into a menu of programs on my machine.

Inside of "all programs" is listed a folder called Microsoft. Inside of it is Outlook 2010.

However, I recently wanted to send an email using Outlook 2010 by clicking on a link on a website. A window opened that would allow me to select the email client I wanted to use from a list of programs. But I can't find Outlook 2010.

When I click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of my screen & then on "computer" and then on C drive, there is listed in C drive two folders, Programs & Programs (x86). However, the Microsoft folder containing Outlook 2010 is not in either one of them.

When I did a search for Outlook 2010 on my C drive, the result said it can be found at
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office

However, I cick the Windows icon in the lower left corner of my screen & then on "computer" and then on C drive, I cannot find a ProgramData directory. So, where is my Ourlook 2010?

Thanks.

Answer:Where Do I Find The Files Listed In All Programs?

The default installation location for Outlook 2010 is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14.

It is my belief that we are approaching a crisis point in Windows malware infestations. Recently I helped someone who found all the standard document types encrypted with two-factor encryption, along with a demand for payment to decrypt them (CryptoLocker malware). The only help I could offer was how not to have that happen again by setting a Group Policy to deny executables in %appdata%. This is done in software restriction policies of the local security policy.

Now %appdata% typically is c:\users\username\appdata\roaming and can be written to by anything or anybody - it's for data after all - but nothing stops programs silently installing and executing from there as well. Hence the need for a software restriction policy - details http://windowssecrets.com/newsletter/cryptolocker-a-particularly-pernicious-virus/

It is also wise to use UAC on level 1 to 3 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Account_Control so every non-system application puts up a warning and you have to click to allow it to happen. That prevents most software installed in any place from running without you knowing. The problem is, UAC is a very blunt tool, and I would like to have certain programs I often use (for example backups) operate as white-listed programs so I don't have the irritation of the screen dimming and having to approve every time I use them.

How do I do that ? UAC and local security policy seem to be two independant things.

Answer:Can I overrule UAC with white-listed programs?

I don't think you can, that's the point. Otherwise apps would add themselves to the whitelist.

At the end of the day, the person installing the malware is the users.

I downloaded and ran HighjackThis once and noticed that it is now listed in my Add/Remove Programs List. Why is this? I thought it didn't actually install anything on your computer?

(I originally had it in a folder on my desktop, I think that's where it was when I ran it, then I moved it to the Programs Folder on C:, then I moved it back to my desktop. Not that any of that would matter...)

On a side note, I also ran that Startup program, and that didn't add anything to my Add/Remove Programs List...

Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

Answer:Why Is Hijackthis Listed In My Add/remove Programs?

Hello,

Not sure what your problem is though..
Hijackthis is listed in your add/remove programs because when you start Hijackthis the first time, it looks where Hijackthis is located and puts an entry in the Uninstall entry in your Registry.

Hijackthis does indeed add some registry entries when you run it, so using add/remove deletes the entries from the registry.

The startup program doesn't add anything to the registry as far as I know.

I have updated with free Windows 10 from 7 and Google Chrome will not update but gives an error message & after researching, I've tried everything suggested on the web including regedit but not technically able to figure out how to uninstall a program any another way. Haven't found that covers the exact problem.

Answer:How can I uninstall Chrome when it isn't listed in Programs?

Click on Start. Now click on All Apps. Scroll down and find Chrome in the list. Right click, and select Uninstall. That should do it.
If it is not listed here, it is possible you are running Chrome Portable, in which case you only need to delete the file directory where it is installed.

Hi,

I want to clean up two computers (especially the first).

-

The first computer has 153 programs installed (mostly games that came pre-installed) - Way too many, so I took a screenshot of the computer's list of programs. The screenshot for this computer can be found at the following link: http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=1611818programlist.jpg

A short summary of most of the programs I'm not sure are okay to uninstall:

All Apple entries
Akamai NetSession Interface
All Hewlett-Packard games
All Hoyle entries
All HP entries
All Sonic entries
All Windows Live entries
All Yahoo! entries
Windows Automated Installation Kit
Windows Media Player 11 (and Windows Media Format 11 runtime)
QuickTime Player

-

The second computer doesn't have many programs installed but I'd still like to clean up what's left. A screenshot for this computer's list of programs can be found at the following link: http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=5797368installedprograms.jpg

Edit: Note: I'm currently receiving help diagnosing multiple BSOD's (same cause I believe) the first computer had experienced. Would it be okay to clean up the Add/Remove Programs list or should I wait until after the cause of the BSOD's has been determined as well as resolved?

Answer:Which programs can be safely uninstalled?

regarding your list and whether you should unistall anything before diagnosing your BSOD, it would be up to you but what ever is causing it would most likely not be on the list (or not solve your problem if removed)

side note: it may be more convenient if you upload your images to something like photobucket and use "insert photo" forum feature.

Also i would download directx directly from microsoft only and I dont believe it would have an entry on the program list.

As of 4pm(eastern time) 6/26/05, I uninstalled Kazaa from my PC because I upgraded to Kazaa lite. Although Kazaa Lite was still running properly I unknowingly erased all of my Mp3's; two years of music, videos, and documnets, all gone in my "Shared Documents" folder. Is there any way that I can Locate and restore the program or at least this folder. I downloaded a program that finds all deleted files in my P.C., but I think theres a difference between deleted and Uninstalled files because Kazaa is not listed in the vast list of files and programs. PLEASE HELP!!!
Current OS: (Win XP)

Answer:Locating Uninstalled Programs

When you un-install Kazaa it should leave your downloaded files (unless you check the box that says to do so). If you checked that box, you'll have to use an un-delete program (it sounds like you have one already).

If you didn't check that box, your files should be loacated in your default download directory. Kazaa's default for this is c:\program files\kazaa\kazaa downloads or something similar to that.

I downloaded an old game that I wanted to play again it finished downloading I installed it. Though it didn't install in the folder I wanted it to so I uninstalled it and started the installation again. Went through the process and put in the correct pathing D:\ program files (x86) it selected and smart highlighted program files x86 for me so i hit enter and the installer thought I was finished with the pathing when I was not and it went ahead and installed the game to that path.

So once again I uninstalled the game and this time ... it uninstalled everything within "Program Files (x86) from A to L before I realized what was happening .. I quickly ctrl shift esc'd and canceled that process for the uninstaller and now alot of items are missing so many I don't even know what is gone.

Unfortunately I do not enable system restore on any of my drives because I know malware can hide in there and some people recommend to keep it off.

is there any way without using system restore to be able to undo these changes or any way to get back the lost files? thanks for your help, advice, and thoughts everybody.

if it helps to know what game it was the game is called "Lunia".

Thanks for reading this cry for help.

I'm running a notebook with Norton auto-protect and ad-aware se, both always updated. I also haven't been downloading anything suspicious or tricky lately. For some unknown reason today a huge ton of things in my Program Files folder went missing. I have no idea where they've gone as I wasn't changing anything at the time that I can think of.

I tried System Restore but it said there wasn't enough disk space and to run Disk Cleanup. I was suspicious because I use it regularly but did it anyway. Big mistake! It claimed I had about 700mb to compress in old files and some other odd numbers. I had just deleted a large amount of music and other media files (nothing dangerous to get rid of) so I thought that had something to do with it (stupid, I know). I went ahead and did it, so could all my files be compressed, even though it seemed like there was a problem before that?

The files didn't all disappear at once, which is why I'm confused. I've got all of the windows updates except SP2 (which crashes my laptop). Even so, wouldn't Norton have picked up a hijacker? And how the heck would one randomly get in anyway? The programs all still show up in add/remove programs and some still have many but not all files present.

In short, I have no idea what's going on. There are no restore points in this month and it won't let me go back a month. I tried restoring in safe mode but no dice. I scanne... Read more

Is there a readable log that shows programs that have been unistalled?

I was dealing with a creepy redirecting malware and I was connecting to bleepingcomputer.com a few times. I went back to connect to bleepingcomputer.com and the connection failed. I did some diagnosis and the detailed info said "The device or resource (www.bleepingcomputer.com) is not set up to accept connections on port ?The World Wide Web service (HTTP)?." This was the only site that seemed to be targeted - I could connect to all other sites as far as I could tell.

I used Malwarebytes and it found and removed a few files and one directory. I still could not connect to Bleepingcomputer. I looked through the programs that had been installed and found wone I did not recognize - which was installed just about the time of my problems. Then I made a mistake - I uninstalled it without getting a screen shot or writing down the name. The good news - I could now connect to Bleeping computer - but Id like to find out what the ell that was.

So - if there is a log that I can see what I uninstalled - I hope someong can let me know.

Thanks for any advise or information.

Regards DRP

I'm trying to change my default FTP client back to Windows Explorer after an accidental Chrome installation changed it to Internet Explorer. I've been told this can be done by going to Default Programs > Set Associations. However, FTP is not listed under Protocols, and there doesn't seem to be any option for adding a new protocol or file extension.

I tried entering
Code:
assoc FTP=
in the command prompt, but it did not help. Is there a way to a new protocol without messing with the registry editor?

I'm sure the solution is very simple, but I can't seem to figure it out for the life of me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When do you want the default ftp-client to start? When someone clicks or enters ftp://whatever.com ? Is that what you mean? If that's what you mean..... it's not a file association at all! It's a protocol

I have two machines on which Office 2010 is installed, but neither of them lists Word, Excel etc in the default programs. Word, Excel etc are also not listed under the RegisteredApplications registry key.

Machine 1: Windows 7 HomePremium 64bit. Originally had 64bit version of Office2010 installed but later reverted to 32bit version so could sync with 32bit laptop. Default file associations seem to be fine and Office Programs appear in "Open With" list but they do not appear in the Default Programs list.

Machine 2: Windows Vista Home 32bit. Recently installed Office 2010 (was using Open Office 3.3) but Office programs did not appear in the Default Programs list and default file associations was not set (e.g. .doc files opened with Open Office). Ran Fix-it to uninstall and then reinstalled Office 2010 but no change.

Can anyone give me the registry entries for Office 2010 so it appears in the default programs list? Or tell me how to uninstall / reinstall / fix reg entries?

FWIW; I have office 2010 Pro and the only program that shows in the default programs list is outlook 2010.

All file associations appear to be correct too.

Missing file association has obvious impacts, but just out of curiousity; what [negative] impact are you experiencing as a result of not having the office suite listed under default programs?

There is a way to add them, apprently, using this program: Default Programs Editor

Hey, our school just gave us new Dell laptops operating on Windows 7 Enterprise. Everything worked for the first day, then today when I tried to open Internet Explorer, a message appeared asking me what program i would like to open it with. I didn't pay much attention and clicked Internet Explorer. Now every program appears with the Internet Explorer icon and appears as a .lnk file. I've looked up some solutions on the internet, but none have worked so far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated... if I can't fix it then i'll have to return it to the IT department to fix it

Answer:All programs listed as Internet Explorer (.lnk0

It's your IT departments job to fix it. If it were me I would take it to them. It's like a warranty, someone (your parents or you) is paying for the salaries of the IT department, make them do their job.

I've seen this before, it's a registry key that's jacked up. I've seen a few different types of issue like this, most often everything wants to open like an .exe.

Hello - my laptop has OS XP Professional version 2002. Originally when things went haywire... I couldn't see any of my icons on my desktop. I was able to run "firefox" and get here MG site. I was able to run the Malware Removal and was only able to get the attached logs. I couldn't uninstall AVG 2011 which didn't allow me to run some of the anti-malware. I have tried downloading it and hitting the removal button several times with no success.

When I tried get one of the logs to show on my desktop, that's when the missing icons on my desktop seemed to magically appear.... only thing is they appeared as "ghosts". I can see them, but they seem translucent. I did try to open a file and everything in it was "ghosts". I could see through them. And yes the log was able to be sent to the desktop.

When I hit the start button and go to the Programs, the only thing listed right now are Malware Anti-Malware, Super AntiSpyware and AVAST. Previous to running the Malware Removal there was nothing listed in Programs.

Attached are the two logs that were able to run. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A friend is having problems with IE 5 and I directed her to Add/Remove Programs so she could repair it. However, IE is not listed in the list of programs. I got her to do a search to try and locate it and it is in C:\Windows.

Is this unusual? Mine is located in Program Files and of course is listed in the Add/Remove Programs list.

I am going to uninstall it for her and install IE5.5 from a CD but I was wondering why her original version is not listed in Add/Remove programs.

I am having a problem with the Windows Update Error code 643 and believe I need to uninstall some versions of .Net Framework that are in conflict with each other. I am running Win 7 Pro, SP1. The "ONLY" version of .Net Framework shown in Control Panel>Programs and Features is V4.6.1. HOWEVER, when I run The dot net setup verification tool it validates virtually all versions on my system. My understanding is that v4 and any version of 4.5 can't co-exist, which would mean I need to uninstall them, but I can't do that because they are not listed as installed programs. Does anyone know how I can uninstall these versions so I can try to fix my update issues with updates to 4.6.1?

Just when I thought I had computers figured out, after having built several from guides on this website and troubleshooted many problems with other guides, I have run into a problem that I'm sure has an embarrassingly obvious solution.

I am trying to uninstall winamp, and naturally I attempted Control Panel - Programs and Features - Winamp - uninstall, the normal method of uninstalling programs. But winamp is simply not listed there, and every guide at winamp's site or a google search starts with that method and offers no others. I know winamp is still there because it still opens and runs and associates every file with it.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I just want to uninstall winamp.

Hello.

On reviewing items that affect my startup using Autoruns, I found plenty caused by programs which I've repeatedly tried to uninstall/disable from task manager from start up. I think some of these programs have left components behind despite being uninstalled. Any suggestions for a program that can scan and fix such problems?

Answer:Tool to fix partially uninstalled programs

I find the Revo uninstaller very effective in these situations, a free download from BC -

Hi! I have a problem with start menu search results in windows 10. I decided to switch over from MS Office 2007 to Office 2016. I uninstalled the previous version and I also used CCleaner to delete all the old entries possible. As you see on the picture (001):
I have Office 2016 already installed. However, when I search for any office app in start menu, I have something like this:
This shortcut is inactive. I can't even click it or so. It's just there stucked all the time and when I pin it to the start menu...
...all I have is an empty tile with folder location. This folder doesn't even exist anymore because it has been removed during the process.
Has anyone ever encountered similar problem? I've already tried Microsoft Start Menu Troubleshooting Tool and also tried to reindex the start menu content. Nothing work :( I would be grateful for any piece of advice.

Answer:Win 10 search shows already uninstalled programs.

The start menu tile is just a short can you not just delete it?

Maybe this freeware program Password Protection System might do the trick for you. I know you are using XP, but my guess is it will work fine.

If the program is not installed, is it safe to delete it? I do not use Pandora, or ebay. Rhapsody is on the computer in the add/remove section. I do not use them and it would speed up the scanning if I got rid of them. Are any of them tied up with Windows files? Revo only found Rhapsody installed somewhere but Rhapsody is in the program files, not Pandora or ebay.

Answer:Solved: Removal of uninstalled programs?

Not familiar with the particulars though, can you point on where they exist as in browsers addons?

Hi, there seems to be a malicious software on my laptop which has messed up my whole system. For the last one week, Google Chrome was acting strange as in it wasn't letting me view sites opened in other tabs and was hogging up a lot of memory. I simply ignored it, thinking it was a problem related to it being an outdated version.

Now since the last couple of days, I realized that almost all the programs and games have uninstalled itself, leaving most of the shortcuts broken. The application's folder have vanished and the game folders contain few MBs of data. Any application that I try to open gives me an error, saying that it doesn't exist. I believe some 100GB+ games/apps got wiped in the process.

Anyway, so I then tried restoring the system to an earlier point (2 weeks) to see if that helped. Most applications were restored but still there was problem running them as many were broken in most cases and the laptop felt very buggy. I then again restored to an older restore point (January) to see if it'd solve it but to no avail. I then restored it back to its original point (basically undo whatever I had done). I was then suggested by a friend to install MalwayreByte and scan the laptop and restore back to an earlier point (January), yet the problem of broken program links and system lag still persists. There were quite a few Trojan Horses that were detected/removed from D drive using MalwareByte. Here they are:

Trojan horse Exploit_c.VOX
Trojan horse Exploit_c.... Read more

Answer:Malicious malware uninstalled all the programs

I have seen few instances of this and if system restore doesnt fix the broken icons then there is no other way.

i was checking a program when i noticed old programs i'd uninstalled still there.will it be ok to manually delete them?

Answer:Old Uninstalled Programs Still In Program File

Hello,

This is a common problem in windows. When a program is removed, the instal directory remains, mainly due to a untidy uninstaller.
In most cases it is safe to remove the folders of programs you have installed. Make sure not to delete any folders where the program it belongs to still exists, this will result in a ruined program.

Everything was working fine until I installed, then uninstalled various software (web creation & music file) ??.and my computer has become noticeable slowed down. Audio (various .wav files that play when the computer starts {not Msft Windows} and video (played through Hauppauge PVR 350/WinTV2000) are very choppy. Prior to this week nothing could even slow down my Hauppauge 350. The problem seems limited to audio and video ? don?t notice it any other time. The WinTV2000 seems to be gobbling up CPU power at 75-85% when on?.but oddly, one .wav file is choppy at startup ?before Hauppauge/WinTV2000 are started. Unfortunately, I don?t know how much CPU Hauppauge was before ? it was never an issue.

I?ve defragmented, run virus, diagnostic checks, reinstalled Hauppauge software and no improvement. I?m running Microsoft XP SP2, have almost 1gig of memory, on a Dell Dimension 4550 (2.66Ghz), no network, no gaming?..

Any ideas on what need changing? Otherwise, reinstall XP, programs and copy files.
Thanks

Answer:I installed, then uninstalled a few programs and....everything has slowed

Have you tried cleaning the registry? Won't greatly improve speed but maybe something is there mucking everything up

I have uninstalled outfox tv but it still appears when opening chrome. I have tracked it down in programs but am unable to uninstall again as I get 'this uninstaller requires admin privileges.' How do I get this? Running Toshiba satellite laptop with windows 8.1

Answer:Uninstalled outfox tv still appears in programs

You could try:
System restore to a date before you installed it.
See if you can remove it from Chrome add-ons.
Reset Chrome this usually removes all add-ons and bookmarks.

I have two (2) I hope small problems

1. I have an entry in the registry for instant DVD recorder under h_key local machine, Software, Pinnacle,
Instant DVD recording, install. This program was uninstalled with both the Windows uninstaller and Revo. Somehow this remnant is still there which I stumbled on by accident.

2. Second entry is for h_key local machine,, software, nero, shared. Nero has never been installed on this system but these two entried persist.

My question is: Can I simply delete both entries? If so, could someone explain in some detail how, as I have never edited a registry entry manually before.

Please help, I am trying to get this system cleaned up and get rid of extraneous stuff. I am also trying to learn. I have a copy of the wikipedia article about the registry and am trying to digest that.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:XP Registry entries for uninstalled programs

Generally stray registry entries such as these will have no effect on the performance of the computer. As such I wouldn't bother removing them.

Before updating, a message was shown that updating will not delete any of my information or files but apps will be uninstalled. Upon restarting my laptop, my apps were uninstalled (and I just re-installed them) but my program files were also uninstalled. Yea, I can just install them all again but some program file that were uninstalled were my Microsoft Office that I paid for and the paid software that came preinstalled on my laptop (Like the webcam, movie editor, etc). I really need those software (especially office) but I do not want to pay for them. Would a system restore bring back those files? Is that the only way I can get those programs (and others) back?

Answer:Programs uninstalled after Windows 8.1 Update

You can try looking in /C: and see if windows made a windows.old folder before updating. It should contain program files etc.

I uninstalled OneDrive a while back, but some programs flash up a warning that it can't be found when saving new files. Looking at the registry, I find numerous references to One Drive (and its predecessor, SkyDrive), so it seems to be embedded in Windows, even though I thought it was removed.

I'm curious to know if anyone has met this problem and solved it. It's an occasional irritant, but I'd like to think my system was free of OneDrive.

Answer:Startup Repair uninstalled programs??

Try reinstalling the programs one by one, restarting each time, and see if the problem reoccurs. If it does, take note of what program it was.

The B user does not have a high enough level to run programs that alter the system. Promote B to a higher level. Or crate a new account for that user.

Just visit the limited account and download / install the desired program . Unless I am not reading things right this will work . If you have any trouble just change the limited account to an administrative account and download the desired program then change back to a limited account .

well as the title says, im cleaning up a friends computer and he's got TONS of games and programs he doesnt use anymore, but, the thing is, they're not listed in the start-programs or the add/remove program in control panel.
But when i check the c:\program files drive...whoaaa...tons of folders...what's the best way to remove these programs? just delete the folders and hunt them down in regedit? thanks in advance guys....

Answer:removing programs not listed in add/remove -control panel

well when i delete games in add/remove program it almost always leaves folders half-empty so it would be better if you removed them manually including the desktop chortcuts.

the add/remove program is for people who don't understand windows.

Answer:portable chrome or firefox not listed as default programs

The only way I figured to use portable versions is to install the full version, then set it as default, and then you can use the portable version which Windows will detect as default, and use it like normal when opening links. There is no way to set a portable version as a default browser.

Last winter I had a Malware attack. Through the great help I received here all problems were successfully dealt with. I have McAfee Security Center and keep the subscription active. Although this was not adequate to fully protect me ( Quite a surprise at the time!) it did blunt the attack sufficiently so we could eventually correct it.
I have noticed though when reviewing the permissions section of security center there are quite a few enters that have full or out bound access although it says that program no longer exists.
Some I recognize such as spybot152.tmp others I have no idea what they are but the date is around the time of the Malware attack such as XRUN.EXE or XPRE.EXE
I am wondering that even though the program or Malware itself has been removed is there a chance that permissions granted at that time could make a future attack easier??
Is there any potential disadvantage to checking off ?Remove Program Permission? for programs that are listed as no longer existing??
Also I have the McAfee Firewall set to ? Tight?. Would anyone have any comments as to the adequacy of this setting?
Thanks in advance

As you can see, the title states the issue.
When I open my list of default programs, my MS Office 2010 is not listed.

Does anyone know why and how I can ADD MS Office to my list of programs??

Thanks !!!

Listed Green

Answer:MS Office 2010 installed but not listed in my default programs

had the same problem, but with the beta version.

anyway, there are some who claim that they have to do it manually, depending on which version of office you installed, 64 or 32, will depend to which folder your exe's are in.
here is the 32 version:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14
the 64 is the same, but without (x86).
here is a quick summary how to do it manually:
Right click on a document in Windows Explorer and then select Open with and then click on the Choose default program and browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 and then located and click on the WINWORD.EXE item and set that as the default application to be used.
