Preferred Solution: recover files deleted too big for recycle bin

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yes. Don't delete anything else though as you may over write them. The files in the recycled bin aren't actually deleted, but rather Windows stops indexing them. Download Recuver and run it.

Ive also tried deleting a test file on my 8.1 machine and nothing finds that either.

Ive spent hours on this!

Answer:Can't recover items deleted from recycle bin

Hi HammerJeff Unfortunately, there's never a guaranteed way to recover a file that you deleted. When you delete a file, you have to be sure that you'll never need it back, because the chances of getting it back are really slim. Free data recovery software can only do so much, and none of them even guarantee that they'll recover anything and if they do, it won't be 100% of what was deleted. The same goes for paid software. If that client had important business files that are critical for his job, one solution could be to go to a data forensics company and get them to retrieve the deleted files from the drive. Assuming that no other major read/write operation has been done on the drive that could have completely ereased the trace of these files, they may be able to recover them. However, these kind of services are quite expansive so I hope for your client that if he pays for them, it's worth it.On a side note, the free software I use for data recovery are Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery and GetDataBackNTFS (there's a portable version made from the paid version). If these fails, I usually tell the person that there's nothing more I can do.Good luck with that client and the case.

Answer:Recover deleted folders from Recycle bin that has been emptied.

Hi Ron Bowers43 and welcome to TSF !

First thing : stop using that computer at all to prevent new data to overwrite the data you're trying to recover.

Then download and install active @ undelete on another computer. Take your drive out of your computer and hook it to that other computer. Make sure to disable system restore on that drive when you first boot in windows on the other computer. Then run active @ undelete on your drive. The demo version can't recover your files but will tell you what it can and will recover. You can then decide whether you want to pay for the fully working version or not. Alternatively once you know which files you'll be able to recover you could google for some free file recovery software but better ask some techs around here which free software is any good first.

The important point is that you have to make sure no new data is written on your drive. Whatever program you use to recover your files you'll have to install it on another computer, hook your drive to that other computer, and make sure you don't save your recovered files to that same drive until everything you wanted has been recovered.

Answer:URGENT HELP - Need to recover a file deleted from the recycle bin!!!

Hi Luke!

There are tools you can use to restore deleted files, but there's no guaranty that you'll be successful. To maximize your chances, stop using the computer. While you're using it, things are being written to the disk all the time and so a deleted piece of data can be overwritten.

Your best bet is to go to another computer, download one of the "recovery" tools and put it on a memory stick or a cd. Then run it on the PC with the deleted file from the cd.

An example of a freeware recovery program is "restoration".

Hi... I have a Dell Laptop which is running Windows 7. Whenever i try to delete something, the dialogue box asks "would you like to permanently delete this file?" and seems to totally bypass the recycle bin.

I tried right clicking the recycle bin icon to change properties. The options for "Custom size" and "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" are UNCHECKED but are also both greyed out and cannot be changed! "Display delete confirmation dialog" is not grayed out, and is checked.

Answer:Windows 7 Recover Files that were not taken to Recycle Bin

Hi shobeck,

Depending on how you imported the photos, there is a slight chance that they're still available in the Temp folder. To access this folder:

Go to Start > Search.
Type "%temp&" without the quotes > Hit ENTER.
See if your files can be found here.

Did you ever activate the System&restore backup functions in Windows 7?

1. Go to the Computer > Browse until you find the folder that the picture was in.
2. Right-click this folder > Choose "Previous versions"-tab.

You can then mark any date/time in that list when the images was supposed to be there. Either use Restore, or Browse button to view these files. Then simply copy them from the opened folder to another location.

If all above fails you need to use some form of data recovery application. There are a few free ones, but most of them are very limited, and needs to be paid for to use properly. You could give this one a shot.

In the future, make sure you have a proper backup of all your important files!

Answer:Recover flash drive files from W7 Recycle Bin

The files didn't get deleted by themselves. BTW, storing something as important as that on a flash drive is not the smartest thing to do. You need to maintain at least two copies of any files you want to keep. Now, go to Windows Disk Management and post all the information listed for the flash drive.

I know that if you delete something in your Floppy Disk or Flash Drive, the files that you deleted are not in the Recycle Bin. This is because Recycle Bin is only for the hard drives. Floppies are not covered neither are flash drives. Now question is where are my deleted files go?

Answer:Deleted files not in Recycle Bin

Simply speaking, they are still there. When you delete a file, it still stays where it was before. You are deleting only its directory entry (the complete path and filename of the file). When the above operation is completed, your Operating System (Windows) sees that space as an empty space, which allows to overwrite that space with a new data (file/files).That's why, after deleting a file, and before writing anything else into its space, old file is fully recoverable.Same goes for Recycle Bin operation. When you delete a file, file doesn't move to Recycle Bin. Only file's its directory entry goes there. That's why you can easily move a file back, and forth from Recycle Bin.

where does deleted files go to on xp windows 7 ,after they are deleted and the recycle bin is emptyed?

Answer:where does the recycle bin deleted files go

Deleting a file then emptying the recycle bin doesn't actually remove the file from the hard drive, all that happens is the references to that file are removed & the disk space that was used by the file becomes available to be overwritten. But until the space is actually re-used, the file still exists & can be recovered.

When deleting a file/folder from an WinXP desktop, typically it would go to the Recycle Bin, incase I need it for later.

In this case, it isn't...its just deleting. Not ending up in the Recycle Bin, and no chance to recover.

Is there anyway to change so that they end up in the Recycle Bin first, before being deleted?

Help ! When I delete a doc or file, it does not appear in my recycling bin. There is nothing unusual about the bin properties and I have not selected 'remove files immediately when deleted'. Can anyone suggest a fix?

Answer:Files deleted not appearing in Recycle bin

How much space do you allot for recycle bin? You have to allot an amount of space for recycle bin on the hard drive, much like with a page file. If you right click on recycle bin and go to properties, it will tell you what %, and if you click on the tabs for each drive individually, It will tell you what numerical value.

If the files you are deleting are bigger than the amount of RB space left empty on the drive, the system prompts you to delete them altogether and then does so if you choose yes.

After seeing a couple files permanently delete at unseasonable moments, I now at least enabled deletion confirmation messages. The bug is with the HDD I use for storage, the SSD hosting the OS works according to the recycle bin settings. I tried the classic subterfuge of switching these settings back and forth for both drives, without success though. This is a new installation of 8.1 Pro for me and I think making deletion without confirmation the default behavior was bad move.

A couple of random suggestions.

Suggestion 1
Have you restarted your machine? If not, try this first...

Suggestion 2
Try browsing to it (this isn't a permanent fix, but if you are needing something now)
1. go to an explorer window
2. Tools> folder options
3. click the View tab
4. click show hidden files, folders, drives
5. uncheck hid protected operating system files.
6. hit ok...
7. go to the root of drive that you deleted the item off of
8. There will be a folder called $Recycle.Bin go to this
9. Then there will be some folder(s) inside, browse these.
Suggestion 3
Was this a clean install, or an upgrade? If it was an upgrade, it may possibly be an issue until you clean install.

Hello folks,

Please bear with me as I am a new member of Major Geeks...
This may be a common question I don't know?

I wish to delete material which I thought I had deleted completely from my drives through the recycle bin.

Just recently, I did what most folk do from time to time-delete files I shouldn?t have! Major Geeks came to my aid by recommending I use "Undelete Plus" to recover them, and it did brilliantly!

What I also found too obviously was thousands of files deleted over the course of time including lots of sensitive stuff...

What can Major Geeks recommend I use to completely delete this stuff to please?

Much appreciated for your help. Major Geeks is superb!!! :

But word of warning while using these types of file erasers, they are perminent, so its always advisable to backup all your current data/files before running.

What you can do which for is a bit of a safer option is to install CCleaner and use its secure file erasing as a way of securly deleting whats in the recycle bin whe your clearing that out, in CCleaners normal run of clearing junk/temps and the bin, this doesnt do free space though, which is whats needed for already deleted files, but can be used from a now on standpoint.

Whilst re-organising folder contents a few days ago I had to delete a lot of duplicate files. They were too big for the Recycle Bin so I deleted them in sections. They didn't appear in the Recycle Bin and I thought that was because I was deleting them direct so I wasn't concerned.Later when using Evidence Eliminator to shut down it stopped at the 'Empty Recycle Bin' stage and reported that there were 400 odd files there and the that the limit it could get rid of was set at 200.I looked again but there were no files listed in the Recycle Bin. How do I get to see them again, just in case I might want to restore any and also to get rid of the holdup when using EE?

Answer:Deleted Files not Showing in Recycle Bin

If they were to big for the recycle bin, then you may have bypassed that and deleted them all off the pc,you should get a pop up if an item is to big to fit in the recycle bin and ask if you want to delete permanently. If so then i dont know how you would get them backmaybe some 3rd party software could do it.

I had to reformat my hard drive in April due to a virus problem. I had a tech guy from Geeks on Call walk me through it and used all the proper CDs and necessary drivers according to him and Dell technical support both.

On a side note, Dell Technical Support is a nightmare. Geeks on Call was great though.

Anyway I am not pressing shift-delete. The "do not move files to recycle bin" box is not checked in the recycle bin's properties. It is set to take up to 100% of the drive if necessary. I currently run AVG, Ad Aware, and Spybot religiously as well as having Spybot T-Timer running at all times.

The Dell people said to reinstall Windows after a two hour chat session. Since reinstalling windows (following all directions, mind you) is what got me into this mess I would rather not do that. I do back up my data to an external hard drive but it still took me forever to get my laptop up and running after reformatting.

Nothing appears in the recycle bin- not when I use the delete key, not when I right click and select delete, not when I drag the files to the recycle bin.

I use Windows XP, I have done the service pack 2 thing, and this is all on a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop.

I am using XP. My recycle bin will not retain deleted files and appears empty after several JPEGS (among other files) have been deleted. The properties settings have not been changed and are at the default setting to retain files (not to delete them). Although it appears empty, if I select 'empty recycle bin' I am asked if I am sure I want permanently to delete these {number of) files. Evesham help line suggests I re- install windows which would mean wiping my hard drive (C). At present this would be a major operatation which I don't want to undertake, although I have backed up 'My Documents' as a precaution and several of my programme files. I am using about 1% of my 120GB hard drive capacity for the Recycle Bin and this is more than enough. Any suggestions for solving this without the major upheaval of a re-installation?Thanks for any help

I did a search on this and could not find anything. Once in awhile my desktop will have a bunch of random files I deleted a long time ago. I always empty it too. There won't be anything in the recycle bin or on the desktop and then I'll go to look at it after awhile and some other group of files will be there. I have tried the whole "rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin" on every drive on my computer. Windows is installed on C:. This is REALLY weird. It isn't even the same group of files each time, it is just random files I've deleted over the past 2 months. I noticed a folder for a demo install of InDesign comes up a lot and says it is in use when I try to re-delete it, could Adobe's crap software be breaking it? PLEASE HELP, THIS IS VERY ANNOYING.

There are a number of free un-delete programs. I like Recuva. Do not install the program lest the data you need to recover be overwritten. Instead remove the hard drive and install it as a slave in another machine. Run Recuva from there.Good luck

First, stop using that computer. Any further use will increase the chance that those files will be overwritten by the OS during normal operations. Then, get a data recovery program. The best free one (IMO) is - but it's very confusing to use.The best paid on (IMO) is GetDataBack from - but it's $80 US. It does offer a free analysis to tell you what you can recover before you pay for it.Other free alternatives are listed here:

I have a gateway laptop mt6705. It came with windows vista and recently I wiped it and installed windows 7.

Everything is working ok except two things.

#1 when I delete a file in any folder, the file doesn't immediately move to the recycle bin. It is deleted(because if I try to delete again I get an error saying the file cannot be found) but it will still appear in the original folder until I refresh the folder view or I close the folder and reopen it.

#2 (which isn't a big deal) but prior to the win 7 upgrade. when I used to change the volume or LCD brightness on the laptop by using the function buttons, a small blue box would appear in the upper left hand corner of the screen which displayed the level at which the volume or brightness were set. Now what appears instead is a distorted box. This same distorted box also appears for a second just after windows loads, right before I'm prompted to use my credentials to login to windows.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Answer:Deleted files dont go to recycle bin immediately

For #1, try right-clicking the recycle bin and clicking properties. There should be an option for either "Custom Size", or "Don't move files to the Recycle bin." Maybe the second one is selected? If so, I would change it to the first option and enter a significant size for the recycle bin.

Foe #2, it sounds like this would be software that Gateway adds on top of Windows, and would thus be lost when you do a re-install. Maybe you can find it on the Gateway website somewhere?

Answer:Are files deleted from recycle bin secure in Windows 7?

As you are no doubt aware nothing is deleted from Windows until you empty the recycle bin but deleting a file does not actually wipe the data on the hard drive, it merely removes the file's address from the file allocation table leaving the space free for future use. If this space is not used by a later file, the data is still there. This is how recovery software  like Recuva is able to work.
So yes, it is possible for someone to access your hard drive and recover deleted data from it. But, since they would have to run some sort of recovery software the possibility is very slight. I can think of two ways to eliminate the risk. One would be to do a defrag since the moving of files would almost certainly overwrite the sectors used. The other is to use a wiping software to overwrite unused sectors, but carefully !  One example would be Ccleaner by Revo which includes an option to wipe unused sectors.
Personally I would think hard before using this sort of tool and definitely make sure that all my data on the drive was backed up first.

The recycle bin does show the full icon when items are deleted and I can undelete the last file that was deleted by right clicking in the bin window and selecting undo delete. No other previous files deleted show or are able to restore. I just re-installed windows, but I have been getting alot of advertisements in my email from some bogus job search engine. That has to be the only thing it could be that has caused this. Other similar forum entries I have viewed tried alot of things but never solved the problem, also 2 of them state that the problem fixes itself after a couple of days.

Answer:Recycle Bin does not show deleted files Vista

Greetings, nateb4s5...

A few things to try, if you haven't already:

1. Right-click the recycle bin, click Properties, and make sure "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted." is not selected. (illustration below)...

2. Open an elevated Command Prompt window by clicking Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator...type the following command and press ENTER: 'rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin' (sans quotes)...(this clears out the $Recycle.bin folder for the C:\ drive - you may have to do this for each hard disk partition in your system)...type 'exit' (sans quotes) to close the Command Prompt window...reboot your machine, see if there's a change in symptoms...

3. Boot into Safe Mode, delete some files, and see if they are visible within the recycle bin and if you can restore and/or permanently delete them - this could tell us if there is some startup and/or 3rd-party program that is causing the problem...

4. If you don't already have another User on your computer, please create another user account. Delete some files (I would suggest deleting files you do not need, or create some new ones, then delete them). Then see if you can view those deleted files in the recycle bin. If you can, then your profile is probably corrupted in some way...

Try those - keep us posted...

I use Windows XP. There is not a lot in the Recycle Bin - some goes back to last year. Some recent deletes are there. I deleted a large number of music files (mp3) and folders and only 3 of these files are in the recycle bin. The Recycle Bin settings are global and do not allow for auto delete. The disk space available is large.

History: My computer had been in storage for 16 mos and I have recently been updating everything. Prior to putting it in storage I had to have it professionally restored - they suspected it was a virus. The hardware was affected and as I continued to have odd things happen I added a portable hard drive and changed settings so that My Documents and all subfolders operated from this drive. That is the only drive on which I can find the recycle bin. On the C drive I found something called Recycler.

I am good at emptying my recycle bin, but in the process of doing updates and going through old files and programs I have intentionally not emptied it as I anticipated the chance for mistakes would be greater. I was right, unfortunately, little of what I have deleted is in the bin. Don't know why old stuff is there and so little of recently deleted files/folders can be found.

Here is my situation:
My system is a Dell XPS 8300 running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I need help in getting the recycle bin to show deleted files. Of course, deleted files that are not visible cannot be restored.
But the deleted files ARE in the recycle bin.

How do I know?
1. Clicking on "Empty the recycle bin" identifies the right number of deleted files in the Recycle bin the including invisible ones, though clicking the "Restore All items" button restores only visible files.
2. The CCleaner utility (from sees them. When I press the ?Analyze? button with the ?Empty recycle bin? set, I can see all the erased files, but cannot restore them from there, since CCleaner is designed to remove junk files, not to restore them

More details:
1. When I delete a file from external drive J:, it IS visible in the recycle bin. J: is a FAT drive. (Previously it was connected to an XP system )
2. Files deleted from Local drive C: and external drive L: are NOT visible in the recycle bin. C: and L: are formatted as NTFS
3. Disconnect the L: external drive and the files deleted from C: reappear in the recycle bin. Reconnect the L: drive and they disappear again.

In short:
L: deleted files NEVER show in the recycle bin,
J: deleted files ALWAYS appear in the recycle bin,
C: deleted files appear in the recycle bin if L: is disconnected, and disappear if L: is connected.
4. Both J: and L: are external drives connected to USB ports of th... Read more

Welcome to Seven Forums GeorgeC. Not sure I can tell you the answer, but let's get some info so maybe the smart people here can

Open L:> Organize (Upper left)> Folder and search options> View tab> Put a check mark next to Show hidden files, folders, and drives (if it isn't checked already)> Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)> Click Yes on the warning popup> Apply> OK

Now a hidden recycle bin folder named $RECYCLE.BIN will be showing. Left click it and see if your deleted files are there.

Also, post a screenshot of your Disk Management screen

Start> In search box type computer management> Enter> In left pane click on Disk Management> Post a screenshot of this

Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

You can now reverse the order and recheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended), and uncheck Show hidden files, folders, and drives if it was not checked before.

I work on a laptop and a desktop. I use an external 320 GB hard disk to save my files.
The laptop is running windows 7 home basic 64 bit (more than 2 years old) and The desktop is running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (recently installed with formatting new pc).
The problem is..
If the HDD connected to the desktop and I delete any file from the HDD, the file appears in the recycle bin of the desktop but as I connect the HDD in laptop the files are not appear under recycle bin of the laptop. Likewise any file deleted from HDD appears in recycle bin of the laptop when the HDD connected to the laptop but not appears in the recycle bin when connected to the desktop.
Is it normal? I do not think so. If it is a problem then how can I correct it. I have tried windows troubleshooting -- performance check , HDD error check but no error can be find out in both computers.

Wish for your helpful suggestions.

Answer:Recycle bin not showing deleted files for an external hard drive

I think this is quite normal if I have read your post correctly. When you delete a file from your external HD the deleted file get transferred to the Recycle Bin of the computer you are using. When you change the external HD to your laptop then there is no record of those files as they have already been deleted & would still be the Recycle Bin of desktop, unless you have deleted them from there.

Answer:Recover deleted files

It's possible the filles may still be there. First try to undelete in your recycle bin. If that's a no go, there are a few commercial recovery programs out there. The only way you can possibily undelete files that have already been deleted in the recycle bin is using such a program provided the files have not been overwritten. If you write something to the same disk it doesn't necessarily mean your deleted files have been overwritten.
If a file recovery program doesn't work, they're gone forever.

My non-technical brother bought an external hard drive then "synched" that drive to a folder on his internal hard drive that held (of course) all of the pictures of the kids. He claims he then deleted the folder from his internal hard drive and everything was gone from his external hard drive. Nothing in the recycle bin either.

I've never used an external hard drive, so I don't know if any of what he's saying even makes sense, but the bottom line is that he would like to get out of the doghouse and get the pictures back. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I've heard that no file is ever really erased from your hard drive its really just a matter of how much you want to pay to get it back.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A large number of files on my hardrive have been deleted and I would like to get them back. They were deleted over a period of 1 - 3 months. My computer runs Windows XP.I have tried retrieving them via the Recycle Bin but it is empty. I have also tried XPs restore programme but it cannot find my files.*Does anyone know of any other way I can restore my lost files?*I have all weekend to try and find them. Oh, the files are mainly word documents, pictures and moviesAny help would be much appreciatedKind regards

Answer:How can I recover deleted files

You could try Drive Rescue click here run off a floppy. However, if you have been using the PC since the files were deleted they may well have been over-written.
