Jerky scrolling when moving page up or down

Question: Jerky scrolling when moving page up or down

I have recently reinstalled XP but each time I use the scroll wheel on my mouse, in any application, horizontal lines come down the screen and the page goes up in a wobbly fashion. The arrow pointer also becomes jerky. I have defragged and also used WinSpeedup without success. Advice would be nice.

Preferred Solution: Jerky scrolling when moving page up or down

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Jerky scrolling when moving page up or down

Hi Peter,

Running Win.Xp Pro 64

I take it that all of your drivers are up to date. Getting drivers for XP x64 can be a bit of a nightmare due to lack of support for x64 XP. There is better support for 64bit OS in Vista and above.

Can you post your full specs. Download and run Speccy for me. Once the program has gathered the required information, go to the top of the Speccy window and do File>Publish Snapshot. Click Yes when prompted. Now copy and paste the URL address that it gives you to your next post.

When did you first notice the issue?

Question: Jerky Scrolling

I reinstalled xp and now when I scroll it is not smooth. The page jerks along. I tried searching on the net and it said uncheck smooth scrolling - that didn't work. Again searching the net I found it might be in my device manager. I found Video controller vga vcompatible not installed - no driver found I guess. I am not a computer whiz so I am really stuck. Are the two things related? How do I go back to smooth scrolling and how do I find a driver for that uninstalled Video Controller? Or how do I install the controller? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

Question: Scrolling is jerky

I recently downloaded Jing. I used it once, didn't like it and removed it. Since that time I've been troubled with an issue with the screen only when I scroll. Instead of it moving up or down smoothly, it gives the appearance of "refreshing" itself each time. It's unusual, hard on the eyes, and probably shouldn't do that! I've checked mouse settings, screen resolution and can't find a fix!

Ok, onto my second issue.

The computer i'm fixing (3ghz Intel, 512mb Ram) has had scrolling issues before and after the format. It is the same on firefox or IE in that whenever you scroll down a page using either the mouse or the keyboard, it jerks heavily, as if it's loading the whole page again every second.

The mouse is a wired old Logitech model.

Can anyone help with my scrolling problem in Firefox 1.0.6? Everything else scrolls OK. I did a HijackThis scan and here is the result:

If you believe the problem may be malware realted then:

Please follow the steps below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:

Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Otherwise, have you uninstalled and installed Firefox 1.0.7 to see if that fixes your problem.

Hi,

Had no idea where to post this question, it kind of lands in a grey area, but seeing as my O/S is XP, thought this would be the most suitable place to start.

I have just performed a clean install, and am in the process of adding, all my AV, and program software. I have however noticed, that when I scroll with my mouse wheel, down the page, it kind of ripples rather than smoothly scrolling.

Have I maybe set my screen up at the wrong resolution? I didn't install any monitor drivers during the install, cos hey, the monitor is working after all. Could something be missing though?

It's not a major issue, but I would like to iron out all these little niggles early on to keep things working tip top.
Please feel free to suggest if this post would be better served in a browser area of the forum, or anywhere else for that matter.

Thankyou.

I'm noticing a weird annoyance when using the mousewheel to scroll in IE7. It jerks about 20 pixels every second for about 5 or 6 times. Please help. I tried this under security but maybe it should have been here. I've check out several boards and seen problems close to mine but the fixes don't work. This started a couple months ago about the time I upgraded Netscape but I can't swear that has anything to do with it. I've always used Netscape because it runs faster for me. When I scroll it is either very slow or it stops for a few seconds and then jerks to catch up. Typing does the same thing. I will type several words before they all of a sudden show up on the screen. All this is happens about half the time. I've noticed even when I play Hoyle card games it sometimes is jerkly. I am mostly looking around Ebay so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I absolutely never open emails with attachments or click on anything in an email. I use Norton Systemworks, Norton Firewall and I've recently used AdAware and CWShredder. I had a tech person "tune up" my computer, rid of temp. files, defragged, antivirus, etc. My computer is only 1 1/2 yrs. old. Please help me and keep in mind I know more about the Internet than I do the computer itself. This has taken all the joy out of being on line.

If anyone having a jerky/stuttering/lagging when scrolling a webpage in Firefox, here's a fix.

Type in "about:config" in Firefox (address bar) and enter general.smoothScroll under filter. Double click on general.smoothScroll to set it to true.

Or else just install add-on smoothwheel.

I don't understand why they didn't set it to smooth scrolling to true in the first place. First I thought Firefox 3.5.1 was buggy and lagging when tryng to scroll but found out that my IE8 scrolling was very smooth.

Is may be just me but scrolling up and down through posts in this forum seems slow and jerky compared to eight forums.

If I press the arrow keys to scroll up and down then it scrolls a bit, pauses for a split second and then carries on a bit more before pausing again. Is this just me or is it some design to make it work better on phones or something?

I tried different themes but it is the same.

Answer:Scrolling seems slow and jerky

It may be specific to your system. I don't have this problem. Try another browser.

Answer:Chromebook scrolling jerky and hesitates

Hi croths,

So the step of logging into the Guest account is a great first step. The idea behind is that you wouldn't have any of your personal applications or settings loaded, and can isolate if the issue is related to the software (operating system or hardware). Considering it was better, but not perfect(?) the next step would be do a 'power wash' which will rebuild the OS and let you start over. It's quick and takes just a couple of minutes, but if you have personal data you want to save, you'll need to back that up first.

Here are steps to do a powerwash: http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27685

Next step would be to do a full system recovery, you can download an OS onto a flashdrive and install it onto your Chromebook. Here are steps: http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27637

Finally, if you're still having trouble I would suggest contacting support as it may be a hardware issue we need to address for you.
Hope this helps,Cory

A hp compaq 2.0ghz core2duo, 3gb ram, 320gb hdd just to 'have the best' and now i wish i didnt 'downGrade'. Other specs inc: IE7, xp pro sp3.

Right issue is: Whereever there is a scrolling box or webpage, for instance if i google something then scroll from top to bottom it will be smooth till about half way then it will jerk and be delayed for a second or 2. Its not webpage specific it will happen even if i goto say internet options then advanced tab and scroll on that it will jerk. On the odd occasion it will be SO BAD it looks as if my vga card drivers are not installed. Also if i click something then start typing it will not pickup the first letters/numbers i type, this is also frustrating as if im typing a password it wont pick up the first digits and i have to start again. Also when highligting text it again wont highlight it all it will pause/stop for a second or 2 before highlighting what i want it to. To solve the issue with no luck ive tried the following:

Update my radeon hd 3200 drivers
reformat laptop (xp pro sp3)
Install all drivers possible
control panal>mouse>wheel>1 as following amount of lines per time
control panel>internet options>advanced>uncheck smooth scrolling

Okay, so my computer is a compaq hp professional. And It's a hand me down but we did get a reboot cd.
A week ago, my computer got a HUGE malware infection and I had to reboot the whole computer. So it's nice and clean now.

But the problem is when I'm on IE or FF, the scrolling is veryveryvery jerky and I took off the smooth scrolling so it would be faster. I even upgraded it. So I'm running on IE7 and FF 3.
Even making the windows smaller and moving them across the screen is jerky.
Help for that, please.

Another thing is that the speakers will not work. And I thought it was just the speakers at first so I tried headphones but that didn't work either. I tried going to the Start -> Accessories -> Volume Control because there was no speaker icon.
And I got this message;
There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to the Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware.

And so I followed the directions but I couldn't find that Printers and Other Hardware folder.
So I looked it up online and some suggested to go to the Sounds, Audios, etc folder and make sure it's on speaker. (or something like that)
But in the Audio tab, everything was grayed out.
Please help on that too.

Answer:Jerky Scrolling, No sound from speakers or headphones.

After you reinstalled Windows, did you install video and sound drivers? It sounds like you didn't. The video driver will get rid of the jerky scrolling.Audio drivers will restore sound. Do you have any other cd's for the computer other than the one you mentioned? Your drivers may be on it. If you don't have cd you will have to download the drivers from HP.You can search for the drivers you need at HP support. If you have any problems finding the correct drivers, please post back and let us know the make and model of your computer. http://www.hp.com/#Support

Hi everyone!

I've got a problem with Internet Explorer (who doesn't?). I have a wheel mouse and when I use it to go up and down a page, it used to scroll smooth as silk, but now the screen jerks and lags. Its really annoying. Only been doing it a couple of days. I just upgraded from 128mb to 256mb, and it still does it. This also happens in text documents.

Also, when I open new windows, or when pages load with new windows, they don't pop up anymore, they minimize to the bottom of the screen and I have to right click+maximize to bring it up. About one out of every 10 or so times, they won't come up at all. I can't figure out what is causing this at all.

The first problem might just be some setting with the mouse. I went into Control Panel/Mouse and played around with the number of lines (the default is 3) but it didn't help.

Any suggestions? Both of these problems seemed to have started at the exact same time (about 4 days ago).

I have an HP Pavilion 7960
256 RAM
1.3 ghz
Windows XP Pro

Thanks everyone

Sounds like you have adware/spyware in there somewhere.

First Delete Temp files, Cookies and offline content. To do this,

Close all browser windows (including minimized windows)
Run cwshredder

When it is finished Reboot your computer.

Download Adaware from here

Go here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Make sure you select "Check for updates now" and get the latest reference files.

Run Adaware and hit the Scan now button, make sure Activate indepth scan is selected and then
hit next. After the scan has completed delete everything it finds.

Restart your computer.

Then Download Spybot search & destroy from here. Read the instructions while you're there.

http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/index1.html

Install the program (Close all browser windows) and run it.

Before scanning press "Online" and "Search for Updates"

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click "Check for Problems" and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds in red.

Restart your computer.

Alright sooooo.

I completely reformatted my computer. I have two drives.

I deleted/created partitions on both, and chose to format/install Windows xp on the C: driver. The format got to 100%, then said the format couldn't be completely probably due to a bad hard drive. I switched out my drive for another spare I had thinking I just got unlucky and my drive had died...

To my surprise, I got the same error with a completely seperate hard drive. Trying various things, I swapped the xp disk into my other DVD-Rom on my computer and the formatting went fine!

Xp was installed, no problems. Now, however, my CPU usage spikes to 100% when doing very minimal tasks such as moving a window around the screen (computer lags, leaving traces of the window around the screen) or even scrolling up and down on a web page with the mouse wheel.

Weird thing is, I can navigate both hard drives just fine. I don't know if my CPU is dying, motherboard dying, or what... But is there anyone that can help me out with this?

I'm currently reinstalling all my drivers praying that this somehow magically fixes it

It makes it almost impossible to read a webpage without using my mouse to go back to where I was reading. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your assistance.

Hi,

After reinstalling windows over the previous corrputed one, I'm noticing a general slowing down of the system, but in particular, when I'm scrollong down the screen or moving the windows, it does it in a sort of slow motion, at intermittence...
Could it be something due to the screen setting?
What shall I do?
thanks

Answer:scrolling and moving.... too slow

could be ram problems or windows is conflicted in some way. you can try this, clear temp files, defrag and run chkdisk, may have to do it in safe. guess to do it right i would save anything on cd and reformat do a clean install.

When I move windows or scroll it moves/scrolls shaky and slowly instead of smoothly.  Just wondering what it might be.  Thanks

Got rid of Vista *finally* and installed XP from the recovery disk that came with my old computer. Everything works fine apart from whenever I move a window, the whole computer lags and the screen goes 'wavy'. Same whenever I scroll down a webpage, document etc. I haven't changed anything (apart from the screen resolution).

On the subject of screen resolutions, can you change it to 1680x1050 on XP, there's no setting for it?

Answer:Lagging while moving windows and scrolling?

When you reinstalled XP - did you also reinstall all correct drivers and make sure they are updated?

Check Device Manager - make sure there are no question marks or exclamation points

Hello,

There was recently a power surge in my nieghborhood and it effected my computer. My hard drive and internet card were fried completely. When I disassembled my computer we found that the heating fan on my graphics card had broken, keep in mine the graphics card had worked perfectly fine. We bought the new parts and i restarted the brandnew clean hard drive and i went on the internet and did a search on google to find that when i scrolled down it moved in bars rather than a smooth flowing motion and when i minimized the screen and moved it around it lagged around quite a bit. Answer:[SOLVED] Lagging screen when scrolling/ moving windows

For the future, consider getting a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply). They include Surge Protection.

This would have prevented what happened to you, especially if you used the UPS Utility and connection so it would automatically, and safely, shutdown your system when it detects a power problem.

Just remember, a UPS is designed to ONLY keep your system powered long enough to allow safe shutdown.

Hi,I am using Microsoft Word 2000.Page 3 had two lines on it. I deleted two lines from page 1.I expected the two lines from page 3 to move to page 2. They didn't.Do you know why?I have the following page setup:all margins are 1 inchheader is .5footer is .1Thanks.

Answer:Microsoft Word 2000 - First line on page 3 not moving to page 2

Its not alwaya a one-for-one exchange. You may have some formatting somewhere in the document that is holding up the move of the last 2 lines.Take a look at the setting for the spacing between lines to close up the text a little and bring the other lines up onto page 2

Hi,My computer has been irritating me for months with laggy typing, when I close programs they do not disappear from the bottom bar quickly, when I try to play Spider Solitaire, the cards deal and move jerkily.I scan with NOD32 daily (NOD32 is updated daily). I used to run a paid up version of Counter Spy but have removed it because I don't like the program. I also run a paid up version of The Ultimate Trouble Shooter (like SiSoft Sandra) but can discern nothing in the process descriptions that looks out of place.I followed the Hijackthis routine to the letter and saved the log which I am posting. I didn't post it at the time as I have never used a forum before and got a little nervous about it all....*sigh*After I did the Grinler/Hijackthis routine, the computer ran well but now it has gone bad again so I have to do something to preserve my sanity.I did install Zone Alarm but have not used it for a couple of weeks as I never seem to be able to manage personal firewalls very well. While I was running Zone Alarm the computer was fine and now it is not so I guess that tells me something.Anyway, this is my HijackThis log file from a couple of weeks ago. Let me say up front: this is *not* about fan noise. I know what fan noise is; I hear it like everyone else; this is something else. The noise I am posting about is hard to describe, but it comes fairly close to classic hard drive noise but it can't be that in this case because my X220 has an SSD. The noise occurs when I scroll in a window, or move the mouse across the screen. It is definitely associated with screen activity. I would love to know what it is. I have it on another laptop as well (ThinkPad T61P).

Since you re-installed Windows, you will have to re-install all the drivers for the PC. These can be found on the CD that originally came with the PC, or online.

Can you please run Everest, which a link to download that program is in my signature and post your System specs? Also, go into device manager (Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager) and post anything with a yellow question mark or exclamation point by it.

Now, it stopped doing it and i cannot find where to enable it again or what or how i disabled it. hopefully i made sense i wouldn't know what to call it. any help would be appreciated and if this is in the wrong spot I'm terribly sorry. thank you

I am not sure where to post this but I guess I am wondering about performance. All seems to be working. Last December I built a new i7-4790k with 512GB SSD and 16 GB memory. I am using Windows 10 Pro...64 bit and all seems fast. My video card is an EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti FTW. This should be overkill as I do not play games.

So my problem is that on the web, I seem to get a page at a time, instead of a smooth scroll. I use Firefox, but now I see it is NOT a web issue. I see this in multi page Office 2013 documents and even Quicken. Is there some setting that I am missing that will load all it can and provide smooth scrolling instead of a page at a time brief delay?

Win 10 and my drivers are up to date.

The same thing occurs when say just typing this the letters seem to freeze after I have typed and then catch up in a hurry as if there is some built in delay. I have seriously checked for spyware and other nasties and I keep my computer very clean. Running Windows XP and firefox. I have reinstalled firefox to an earlier version but still does not make any difference. I have downloaded the latest video drivers and set the screen to the max of 75Mz. The task manager says the cpu is only at just over 0% when this happens and the hard drive light is not flashing at all.

While I have been typing this it has 'frozen' for a few seconds on 3 occasions - looks like it is inbuilt. Apart from a rather drastic clean reinstall of XP I cannot think of anything else ..

Please anyone got any clues for me
Regards
Michael

I have a scrolling mouse and just installed windows xp. I was using 98se. I'll explain this is the best way I can but the webpages in 98 would move up and down with no apparent page movement. Now in xp, the pages seem to roll like a wave when you move the page up and down. It's very annoying and I wanted to know if it's possible to change that.

Also, is Office 2000 professional compatible with xp?

Hi, I hope this is the right place to post this question. I run Firefox, have the latest version. Occasionally, when I scroll down Yahoo! News (the vertical stories), each time I scroll, the news page goes black for a microsecond. This does not happen when I run Internet Explorer. What could be causing it? (I am not a computer techie, so please use language a non-techie will understand.) Thank you.

I have noticed this ever since I installed an Intuos 4 Tablet and started using its mouse when browsing. In Firefox on random pages the page will start scrolling up and down on its own. Seems really weird, has mostly been an annoyance until today when I noticed it even selecting fields on a contact form. This has me suspicious and wondering if I have a virus, Trojan or some other form of malware. Avast has made several alerts while viewing some images on Google searches for even random stuff like backgrounds, vintage labels as well as others. Anyhow really just need help to see if there is a problem or if its just a glitch in the Intous drivers.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Hey everyone, I just got home from school and logged onto my computer and for some reason when I scroll up or down a web page (using either Mozilla or IE) it seems choppy.

I know that's not a very good description but that's all I can think of. I noticed it when I clicked in on the middle mouse button to bring up those arrows that allow me to scroll by holding the mouse either above or below the respective arrow. Before when I would scroll (before as in last night) everything would be smooth. The only things that I can think of that I installed recently are Adware SE Pro, Registry Mechanic, Spyware Blaster, and PCAnywhere (which I deleted right after installing). Could any of these be the culprit?

If you need a better description of what I mean by "choppy" scrolling let me know and I will try to elaborate better.

Oh yeah, I also started an O&O Defrag last night before bed which was still running this morning. I stopped the defrag and was planning on continuing it tonight so I don't know if this could also be a problem. I've stopped defrags midway through before with no problems.

Thanks for the help!

Answer:Solved: scrolling up/down a page is now choppy in IE and Mozilla

I believe that this is a symptom of a larger problem concerning my video card. I've started a post about it here (http://forums.techguy.org/t369357.html). Will update if I get it resolved in case someone else runs into this problem.

I have a Toshiba Satelite C50-A notebook. It runs on Windows 8.1.

Some time ago at regular intervals the page suddenly starts to scroll to the bottom of the page. It does so in many different programs (firefox, MS office applications, etc. ). This makes it impossible to work on the computer.

I have tried to fix it by resetting the computer. I have also installed another operating system (Linux, in dual boot with Windows 8.1). The problem persists though.

Any suggestions how this can be fixed?

Thanks

before I send this mouse back to amazon I would like to try and fix it with somebody's help.

My mouse is a perixx mx-1200 gaming mouse which can be wired in when charging and using the mouse as a wired mouse or used wirelessly (not bluetooth) using a standard usb receiver. It's about 6 months old.

The problem - when I scroll a page (web, xl, anything) the page staggers. So if I scroll downwards it will scroll a few lines upwards instead and visa versa. I have to grab hold of the scroll bar at the side which then works fine.

I've tried using the mouse wired into the usb but it still does the same - so not a connectivity issue. I've tried installing the driver/software package and tried various configuration (no. of lines scrolled per turn of the wheel etc.) but still no change. I've tried turning off the mouse and unplugging the receiver.

I can't think of anything else to try. Amazon have agreed to refund me but if i can get the mouse to work I would be happier because it is a really useful mouse and I like the fact it is rechargeable and can be used with or without wire.

Anyone know what else I can try?

Help appreciated (as always)

FTR, there is no such thing as a "standard" USB receiver. There are several types of "receivers". If not Bluetooth, then it is some other sort of RF receiver besides Bluetooth. Note Bluetooth is also RF, just very low power (for short range) and within the 2.402 to 2.485 GHz band. There are also IR (infrared) receivers but they are "line of sight" and not typically used for mice or keyboards.

Try another mouse. This could easily be caused by something other than this Perixx mouse. If another mouse works fine, then you can conclude the Perixx (or its driver) is the problem. If the other mouse displays the same symptoms, then it could be your graphics solution, RAM, HD, malware or something else.

Have you tried updating your graphics drivers via the manufactures website?

Could you give us your full system specs so we can see what we are working with. If you are unsure what your specs are, download and run Speccy, then when it's generated the information (about 10 seconds) go File>Save Snapshot, and attach that .speccy file as well. (You will need to zip it to attach it here: Right click on it and select 'Send To'>'Compressed (zipped) Folder'.

How is the screen when viewing streaming media like YouTube videos? When did you first notice this to start happening? Was it after installing another program?

Hiya and welcome

Lets do a 'spring clean' first:

Go to Tools | Internet Options. General tab. Under Delete Files, delete offline content. Also, clear the History.

Content tab, under AutoComplete, clear Forms and Passwords.

Advanced tab, under Browsing, look for Enable Insta on Demand. Untick.
Under Security, look for Empty Tempory Internet... Tick.
Apply and OK

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds.

Then, Go here for the free Ad-aware 6 Personal Build 181: http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

Then please launch the program ... on the start-up screen, you will need to first run the Webupdate Feature (globe at the top), or click "check for updates" on the start screen to get the Reference File up to date.

Please use either the Custom Scan with Memory and Both registry scans ON. Also.... make sure that you activate IN-DEPTH scanning.

Then, see that you have these options checked:
Under Ad-aware 6 Settings, Tweaks, Scanning Engine:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under Ad-aware 6 Settings, Tweaks, Cleaning Engine:

Yeah I don't understand. I had them replace the video card before I took the computer home (Geforce 9800 GTX) so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it (maybe not properly installed?)If I open a folder, and move it around the screen.. it trails like it's an old computer. Here are the specs.Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_qfe.070227-2300)           Language: English (Regional Setting: English)System Manufacturer: powerspec       System Model: E361               BIOS: Default System BIOS          Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU    Q6700  @ 2.66GHz (4 CPUs)             Memory: 3322MB RAM          Page File: 203MB used, 5002MB available        Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS    DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)DX Setup Parameters: Not found     DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit UnicodeAlso, I've tried to locate this video card from inside windows and I can't seem to find it.Went to a website that scans your computer to see if it can handle the latest games, and it passes in everything, except it can find the video card, it just shows question marks.Anyone?
