Chipset fan noise on startup

Question: Chipset fan noise on startup

I have an Asus A8N Sli Deluxe mobo, about 2 years old. For the last 6 months it's been making some horrible grinding noises on start up. By process of elimination (sticking my fingers into the various fans) I've discovered it's the chipset fan on the mobo.Apparently this is a VERY common fault on this mobo.Question is, how do I know which after marked chipset fan is compatible with this mobo?

Preferred Solution: Chipset fan noise on startup

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Chipset fan noise on startup

Same board as me and yes you're right a common problem. And this is not the only board with this problem, my last one a Gigabyte board has 2 Northbridge fan failures in a bit over 2 years.Because of this I replaced it with a Zalman Northbridge Heatsink. Cheap, easy to fit, no fan to fail and if or should I say when my Northbridge fan fails on this board I will replace it with a heatsink too. Far better than having to dismantle the computer each time.click here out of stock at the moment but other companies will have them.

Answer:sis650 p4s266vx chipset fix,at startup it stop at f1,f2

The motherboard manufacturer has BIOS updates on it's website. You will need to know the exact motherboard model, and of course the name of the manufacturer. However, if your PC is a branded one (eg Packard Bell, Acer, Gateway, Compaq etc.) you must only download BIOS updates from that PC manufacturer's website, NOT from the motherboard manufacturer.

The initial problem was that web pages would load very slowly and hang

I looked in Device Manager
Device Manager did not recognize the Ethernet Controller or the SMBus

I found the driver for the Ethernet Controller and it

I could not find a driver for the SMBus Controller

A forum I read referred me to this page:

problem of:

- Windows* does not recognize the SMBus controller.
- Device Manager shows a yellow question mark for the SMBus controller.
- Device Manager lists the SMBus controller under Other Devices.

However the file on this page was not for my G33 Chipset. So I found
another chipset driver at:

and downloaded the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility.

Hi Everyone, I just bought a Lenovo C40-05 21.5", product ID F0B5000JUS, and upgraded the original OS to Windows 10.  The updgrade was largely successful, but always at startup speakers suddenly turn on and produce a few seconds of white noise.  1) Am I supposed to hear the traditional Windows startup jingle?2) Is there a way to avoid the white noise? Thanks, Andrea

Answer:C40 noise at startup

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Try enabling your Start Up Sound to see if the white noise goes away.  By default, Windows 10 has it disabled.  This link will explain how to enable the welcome sound in Start Up.

Question: Noise at startup

I normally turn my computer on and make a cup of coffee while it's starting up, so it's therefore running for a few minutes before I get to it. When I returned to it this morning, it was making a much louder noise noise than it normally does as if something--I suspected either a fan or a hard-drive--wasn't running properly. The drive light was out, and the desktop appeared normal. I shut if down and started it again, the noise immediately returned, and I turned off the power. I then opened the case and started it again to see what I could see, namely if it was perhaps one of the fans (CPU and power supply); both fans seemed to be running fine and the noise did not return. Motherboard Monitor shows one fan running at 4891 rpm.

I've started it up a few times since without problem, but I'm now worried that one of my hard-drives is getting ready to do something unpleasant. Here are my system specs:

K7T Pro 2-A w/ VIA KT133 chipset, AMD 800 Mhz, 512 Mb SDRAM, Jaton 3D Force-2MX 32 Mb 4x AGP RT, 52x CD ROM, 80 Gb Western Digital 7200 RPM HDD, 30Gb Maxtor 7200 RPM HDD, Win 98SE.

I've had the Maxtor since I got my computer three years ago, and I installed the WD in October. I'd appreciate it if someone could recommend a utility I can run to check on the health of my drives, or perhaps some other means of diagnosing whether there is a problem or not.

Answer:Noise at startup

It is mostlikley to be a fan and the CPU 1 as i have had 2 or 3 of them do that. YOu could do is unplug the fan when switched off then switch the computer on agane see if it makes the noise or not but switch the computer off asap as thay get very hot very quickley So beware i would not recomend it.

Question: Noise at startup

I have a noise when i startup my pc , it starts as soon as i start the pc and sounds like a whirring whoosh that pulses and eventually stops altogether . Sorry i can't descirbe the noise better but i'm worried that it might be a failing hdd or something like that . I'm hoping that it's only a dirty fan , the noise seems to be something spinning or turning and the only things that spin or turn are the hdd and fans , correct? Any help , as usual gratefully received .

Answer:Noise at startup

At a guess ( no info on machine ) it might be the videocard controlling the fans until everything has loaded then settled down.I get similar on mine.

I'm a little troubled by a strange noise that becomes very noticeable as soon as I push the start up power button. It started a week or two ago and it sounds like it's coming from the fan, lasts for a few moments (about 4 or 5 seconds) and then goes away by itself. The bootup proceeds normally and I do not notice any other obvious issues. I bought this computer in November 2004, so it is a 5-year old, and it was never opened for cleaning or anything else. I have a suspicion that the noise might just be due to possible dust accumulation. Is this suspicion reasonably well founded and should I proceed and try to access the fan assembly or should I bring the machine to a computer shop for cleaning? Or is it possible that the noise may be signaling some other (possibly more serious) problem? I would very much appreciate any help anyone could provide. Thanks.

Answer:T42 noise on startup

It could be the fan, or it could be more serious. Back up your system. To clean the fan, follow the T42 keyboard removal movie, then use a can of compressed air to clean it. If you're not comfortable doing this, take it to a shop!

When I Coldstarted My Computer (desktop) It Made A Terrible Grinding, Screeching Noise But Windows, Startup Etc Programs Ran Ok.
I Cannot Distinguish, If It Comes From The Fan Or The Harddrive. It Is Very Loud. So I Logged Off And Closed.

Just built a new rig about a week ago. Unfortunately at first power up I got a spark and a popping noise. Immediately shut down the PC and checked all the connections and only thing I could see that may have caused it were the unused plugs on the PSU being too close to the PSU. I moved them further away from the PSU and wire tied them down and started up again. PC started up fine and was able to load the OS and all the other goodies. The one thing that sounded different was at start up there was a ticking noise coming from the PC that sounds like it comes from the PSU and this noise does go away as it warms up. PC seems to be running perfectly but would like opinions as to what this may be.

Answer:Ticking noise at startup

My PC Had That too!

well, from what i've noticed, its the fan. the fan's motor is choppy and "kicks" so thats the ticking noise. My laptop had a ticking noise from the fan after I dropped it once.

Hello,

Ok, I'm not sure if I came to the right place for this problem but I'm looking for as much help as I can.

This has been happening for awhile now but everyday when I first startup the computer it makes this grinding noise that lasts for about two minutes then it goes away and is fine for the rest of the day when I use it. At first I thought it was dust so I took it out and cleaned it up a bit with a can of compressed air. After trying that, the noise is still there. I don't think it's my hard drive since I use a SSD. I haven't gotten a chance to open the case and carefully listen where the noise is coming from but one thing I do know is when the noise is happening and I thump the case with my hand a few times it seems like one of the fans inside makes this lower power noise thing and then you can hear it slowly coming back up to normal speed. Keep in mind this only happens if I thump or hit the case with my hand. I'm planning on opening the case soon and see what is causing the noise but I'd like an idea if you guys know if what could be causing the noise so I know what to pay attention to. And what can I use so I can hear better where the noise is coming from?

Answer:PC making grinding noise on startup, need help!

use a straw to your hear and move it around the components to try and isolate the cause

the last thing you want to do is thump the case with your hand if want the computer to keep running

When i got starcraft 2 yesterday i was having problems with overheating so opened up my case an went over everything with compressed air, including blowing the dust out of both fans. When i turned it back on the fan started making a loud noise like it was going really fast (i dont think that somthing had gotten in the blades because the fan it was coming from is in an unopanable metal box with a sticker saying (unservicable parts, do not open).

I stopped the blades with a pen to make sure that it was the fan making the noise and when the fan started moving again it was without the noise it was making before and rebooting the pc resulted in it starting up fine. However, i just started up this morning and the exact same thing happened. I opened up the pc to look for abnormalities and found nothing and hooked it back up and stopped the fan with a pen again and that fixed it and it has stayed fine after rebooting again. Any idea what has happened?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop that I just bought in January. The operating system is Windows XP home edition. I've never had any problems with it, but as of yesterday it started making a horrible, loud beeping noise every time I start it up. The only way to stop the noise is to either turn off the machine or press the space bar, and then Windows will start.

Also, the computer has begun freezing at random times for no apparent reason. I have to turn the computer off when this happens.

I have no idea what could be causing it.

Any help would be appreciated.

The "beeps" will be telling you whats wrong.
The number of beeps , sequence or type of beep is important.

It is most likely a worn out case cooling fan, PSU fan or CPU fan

My fairly new HP M7070N Media Center has started making a weird noise at startup.
This only happens on my morning bootup, the rest if the day is uneventful.
I have three fans, two hard drives and another fan on my newly installed ATI Graphics card.
I have wondered about the Drives – I have no Floppy and two CD/DVD drives.

With another Puter, I was able to record this mornings “Moaning n Groaning” which was rather quiet as compared to other mornings … I suspect the nightly room temperature has an effect on the “Quality” of the noise.

Since I only have about a 40 second shot at finding the culprit - I’m trying to formulate a plan of attack.
Does anyone recognize this noise and have any attack suggestions ?

This mp3 recording has been edited a little in overall length.

At first I thought it was a POST error, but the length and amount of beeps is different every time I boot up. Once in a rare while, it won't even beep at all when it boots up. It's really loud and annoying and sounds like it's coming from the onboard speaker. Before this was a problem, it used to make the same sound when I was holding down a key on the keyboard during bootup. Any idea how I can get rid of these beeps? (My laptop has also been taking an unusually long time to boot up, although I'm not sure if these problems are related.)
Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Whenever I go to turn on my computer in the morning, it makes a very annoying buzzing sound that gets even louder and more annoying as the time goes by. I have no idea what is causing this. I've opened my case and looked around trying to pinpoint the noise but have been unsuccessful. I have a feeling it might be the hard drive or maybe the PSU but I really don't know, those are just guesses. I've tried turning off a few of the case fans and even reduced the speed of my HSF but nothing. I really don't think it is the fans anyways. I really don't know what to do, I really hope that this noise isn't a warning sign that one of my parts is going to fail.

Also, I just want to mention that this noise doesn't occur whenever I shut down the computer and then turn it back on again. This is what I've been doing pretty much everyday now. I turn the computer on, listen to the annoying buzzes for a couple minutes, shut down, turn it back on and then use my computer normally.

Answer:Upon startup, computer makes buzzing noise

A buzz.
Yes, maybe something in the way of the power source fan.

Hi Everyone,

Just recently has my laptop started malfuntioning.
Yesterday, after startup (or when you take it out of sleep mode) it started beeping -

Beeping is 10 short in a row, fast.

I run a stock standard Satellite A200, using Windows Vista.
I do not know what to do, and during the beeping (which lasts about 10 - 15 minutes) I cannot do anything - the CPU (i think) simply cannot handle any processes. The beeping comes from the right side of the laptop, and is feint, but definately a sign of a problem.

I believe it has something to do with the motherboard, but I don't know how to diagnose this problem, and after hours of searching I have not found anyone with a similar problem to mine.

I am sorry if I have posted this in the wrong forum, as the boards are confusing and I cannot find a technical support one.

Please Help,
Victor11

Answer:Re: Satellite A200 - Beep Noise after Startup

Hi

As I understand your problem, it seems that you are not able to get into the BIOS and you are not able to boot the Window OS.
You cannot see the Toshiba Splash screen as well? Is it right?

Hmm? it seems that this beeping sound is related to a hardware malfunction?
So possibly the POST (power on self test) cannot be passed properly and therefore you get this alert beep sound?

What to say; in most cases it?s motherboard related but it?s hard to say what could be exactly wrong?

Maybe you could try this;
Remove battery and disconnect the AC adaptor for some hours?
Wait and after some time connect both parts again?
Then try to power up the unit again?

If this will not work, then I would recommend asking an ASP technician for a help?

Hi, so I've recently bought a Dell Inspiron Laptop and I've only had it for about a month now. It keeps crashing when I turn it on though. So everything will load up as normal and seems fine and then suddenly the computer starts whirring, screen goes blank, it sort of clicks and everything turns off. I then start it up again and its fine!

I don't know whether maybe it's overheating but when I feel the laptop it's not hot at all. It only happens sometimes too, maybe 1 in every 3 start-ups. I did think it might be the "AMD Video Accelerator" as this would load up just before it crashed but I've updated the Graphics card driver and run a video card diagnostic on Dell's website and all seemed fine.

I'm just a bit stuck really and wondered whether it might be a hardware fault or if it might be something really simple which I just didn't know about. Any help would be great as I need this laptop for uni in a few weeks and would rather not have to replace it!

Thanks, Joe.

HI and Thanks for any help you can offer!!!

So My hard drive died, I purchased a new hard drive and installed the OS successfully. I proceded to use the computer for a day or so. I went to start up the system today and it loads Bios and then there is a clicking sound from inside the computer, and the system reboots before it even get's to the windows loading screen...

-The reboot and a click coincide every time.
-The time between clicks is random, sometimes the machine runs for 8 seconds, sometimes it clicks every second ( also rebooting every time as well.
-I removed the hard drive and the situation is exactly the same.(it rarely makes it to the disc boot failure prompt, and reboots even if it does.
- Tried to enter setup up made it in to immediate reboot.
- Not sure if it is involved but when the computer is off, there is a high pitch tone. like when your ears ring coming from the power supply, it shuts off when i turn the off/on switch on the power supply off.

Any Ideas?

Answer:clicking noise and reboot.in system startup

Is this a home built system, or a system you have bought from a shop?

Could you tell us the specifications of your PC, please? Especially the Wattage of your Power Supply Unit (PSU) and a brief list of the devices it is powering. (eg, 550W PSU, 2 HDD's, 2 DVD drives, etc.)

Is there any possibility you could put another PSU in there? Reviewing the information you have provided, that's where your problem appears to be.

On a side note, what was it about your previous drive that made you think it had died?

Hello all,

Here you go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVm4jGNhxSQ
MB: New coming Asus Maximus VI Impact
CPU: Intel i5 4670K
GPU: MSI TF GTX 760 OC
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 8G 1600
CPU cooler: Corsair H80i
PSU: Seasonic X serie 650
SSD: Samsung Pro 840 128G
HDD: Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1T
Case: Bitfenix Prodigy white

So the installation was not easy, but I finally managed to install all carefully. I made a super clean windows 7 ultimate 64 bit installation and installed all driver correctly.

The only problem is this: I get this annoying hard drive clicking noise from the H80i. I don't know if it is the pump or the fans or the radiator. But I am pretty sure that I comes from the cpu cooler.

So what do you think about this issue and which component could be the source of the problem? Thank you very much in advance. Regards.

Hello everyone, i've just taken a headfirst dive into vista and as far as i can tell, besides the UAC, im becoming quite fond of it.

heres the backstory for my issue.

Purchased a HP tx2510us tablet, it came with vista home premium, I had a copy of Vista ultimate off of the computer my parents bought(they "down"graded to xp pro). downloaded all the drivers off the HP website, wiped the HD and installed vista Ultimate x64. Then i reinstalled all the drivers(the x64versions, i made sure of that.

Now the issue. Whenever I turn on or off my computer. the speakers pop. This also happens if the speakers are muted. I'm not sure if this is a driver issue, or somthing else. any help would be appreacieated.

EDIT* The popping noise also happens when the windows bootup sound plays.

We have the same computer [I love mine after two months with it], and mine does the same thing from the factory. I don't think anything can be done.

Hi! So I started up my PC today and heard this clicking noise: https://soundcloud.com/sean-redmond-4/audio-recording-2016-07-23-12-19-04

The noise slowly stops after the BIOS screen. The only ways I have found to recreate the issue is:
When loading and running a high performance game (Dragon Age Inquisition on Ultra, Black Desert Online on High). This however DOES NOT happen during main menu screens, only when in-game on dragon age and after loading the game world in Black Desert.
When running the Windows Experience Index. The frequency of the clicking seems to depend on the amount of work my video card is doing. the intensity of the clicking sound is always the same.
I have tried transferring a large amount of files to see if that causes the clicking noise too but it does not. I suspected it was my HDD at first, so I unplugged my HDD (I am using a SSD as my boot drive and HDD for storage) and the clicking still continued upon startup. I checked to make sure no wires were stuck in fans and everything was secured, etc.

I am running windows 7 with a GTX 970, 4GB of RAM, Intel i5 processor.

Thank you so much for the help!!!!

Update: I am thinking my GPU fan might be loose because it seems to only click when the GPU fans are running. there are no wires in the fans that i can see so ill try and check more in depth.

When I start up my computer, I get a clicking sound like morse code, and my computer freezes until the noise stops. I originally had Windows 8 on the computer and had the problem then.

I hated Windows 8 anyway so I removed it and installed Windows 7 Home Premium thinking this would remove the problem but it did not. When I had Windows 8 installed the noise would start at random times, but in Windows 7 it only seems to happen at start up.

The clicking can go for from 5 minutes to 20 minutes and it does not seem to make any difference if I restart the computer. The mouse can still be moved but there is no response when I click on something.

Some have suggested it is from the hard drive but it is deffinately from the speakers.
When I am able to change the volume, the clicking changes volume too.

This is driving me nuts!
Has anybody got any ideas as to what is causing this problem?

I thought you are speaking about the clicking noise coming from the HDD?

Start the notebook, press F2 and access the BIOS.
Is the clicking noise noticeable now?

What happens when the headphones are plugged in?

For the past week my computer has sometimes been making a sort of high-pitched whining sound when I push the Power On button. It boots into Windows same as usual and I can use programs such as Paint, Word and everything else that is on the operating system drive. But my documents and portable programs which are on a secondary hard drive will not function. If I shut down and then turn the computer off and on at the wall plug then push the Power button it nearly always turns on without the whining noise. The secondary hard drive functions normally if the whining noise isn't present. Is this hard drive failing?

Answer:Whining noise on startup - hard drive failure?

Hi,I have ideapad z500 (no touch), I noticed there is a grinding noise for 4-5 seconds during startup. This grinding noise is coming before lenovo boot logo, after this it runs normal without any noise. If I eject the drive and boot the device the noise is not coming, so I am sure its coming from the optical drive only.Is there any solution to this problem?

Answer:Ideapad z500 Optical Drive noise on startup

The noise could very well be an indication that there is a problem with the drive.  During the initial boot up the system will poll all the hardware devices.  The noise could be from the spindle motor momentarily being powered up or with the read / write head thrashing.  I would try leaving a blank CD or DVD in the drive and see what happens on the next boot up and if the noise is more or less.

In the event the drive needs to be replaced, you can contact Lenovo Support and see if they will send you out a replacement.

All,

I'm trying to fix a XPS/Dimension 400/9150 which exhibits bizarre symptoms.

On startup, before POST, the system will emit a noise from the system speaker and, following the noise, hang indefinitely without booting.

A recording of the noise can be found here: WMA Recording of noise

It did this to me 8 weeeks ago, and I stripped it down and put it back together, and it persisted. However, when I removed and reinserted the IDE-like connector between the MB and the front power panel, it booted OK and has run for 8 weeks or so.

This time, no amount of resitting of that connector solved it, but a step-by step strip and test solved the problem by removing and reinserting RAM in socket 4.

At the end of this test, it exhibited these symptoms with only MB, Processor, CPU fan, 2 x RAM and HDD inserted. The RAM memtests fine and, as I said, this was solved previously without reseating the RAM.

It is obviously only a matter of time before it does it again. My thoughts are all MB related, what are yours?

Hi all, I recently realized that my X1 carbon is starting up pretty slowly compared to my other laptop... it takes 40-60 seconds after logging in despite being on quick start mode in the BIOS, whereas my other laptop starts up in 15. This laptop was a Windows 8 non-touchscreen that was changed to a Windows 7 machine. Does anyone have any idea what might be happening? Additionally, what is the best way to reduce fan noise when operating plugged in at a fairly high performance, or is this unavoidable? Finally, sometimes when I am operating on battery, my battery will go from full then after an hour or so it will hit 50%, then suddely drop to a critically low level. Thanks.

Answer:Carbon X1 34xx - Slow startup; fan noise and batery

1) Startup speed: Have you tried cleaning out your unneeded startup items in MSCONFIG?2) Fan noise: Scales with system temperature, which scales with how heavily you're stressing the system.3) Battery gauge reset using Power Manager or Lenovo Settings.

Hi all, For the past couple of months my superb little X60s laptop has often (but not always) been making a whirring / very fast clicking noise just after starting up. This noise will remain and then subside after a few minutes. It seems louder on restart after the machine had very recently been shutdown. This condition hasn't changed, infact possibly having got a little quieter and less frequent over the past month.    I am guessing its the fan as the noise does seem to eminate from that area.   Any ideas anyone?  I should get this seen to, but before making any moves has anyone encountered similar or have any knowledge of this condition?  Many thanks.

Answer:X60s - Fan whirring / very fast clicking noise after startup / logging in

the laptop fan should spin up when you start up, i think that is a self diagnostic check of some sort... the noise you are hearing in the recent time, is probably due to the heat sink grill getting clogged up with dusts.... so you should check whether your heat vent are clean, and clean it out if necessary by taking off the keyboard.  The noise is louder after a recent shut off is due to the residue heat in the heat sink, which causes the fan to spin at higher speed, and therefore the noise is louder....  http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-62866.html

When I start up my laptop from cold, there's this ridiculously loud squealing, siren-like noise coming from the speakers that seems to slowly disappear right as I get to the log-in screen. It'll usually be gone after I've logged in. It's not a constant sound, but one that fluctuates. I know for a fact it comes from the speakers because I can shut off the sound with the mute button. So please do not ask me if it may be coming from a fan or HDD. I want to know what possible solutions I can try. I've had the laptop for a little more than a few years now and do game on it.

When I plug a power cord in, the power light instantly (almost) lights up, whether or not I've pressed anything to try powering it up. When I DO press the power button, nothing changes. Nothing sounds like it's running at all. Someone suggested moving the RAM around, so I placed it in a different slot, but that didn't change anything. This was a frankensteined computer that was given to me, so I can't even really provide much in the way of specs. It's an IBM ThinkCentre S50 (shell anyway), but appears to be loaded with a 40GB Seagate HDD, Intel P4, 512MB RAM, and an AcBel power supply. In case this matters, and I don't know enough to know or what I would do about it, but there are a few open plugs for power. The motherboard has a couple plugs running into it, but one still open. The HDD has two empty plugs, but one plugged into it. I would have no idea how to play around with the power supply. Not to say that's the problem. Thanks for any help.

Answer:Computer shows power light upon plugging in, but no boot, noise, or any startup

It could be the power supply (officially called a "PSU" or Power Supply Unit) that's faulty and needs repalcing, but you were right not to go messing with it as even a faulty one can give you a nasty shock from the power that's stored up inside it. I've worked on fixing & upgrading computers for many years, yet even I draw the line at changing a PSU. I let my local PC shop do it for safety reasons, plus I believe in supporting little independant PC shops whenever possible.

I need to install a fresh installation of Windows XP SP2 (SP2 is integrated on the install CD of course) onto a system with an Intel 875P chipset and a system with an NVIDIA NForce 2 chipset? I'm pretty sure Windows XP SP2 recognizes these chipsets without needing the manufacturers chipset drivers? However, does it still provide any benefit to install the manufacturer's own chipset drivers, even though Windows XP SP2 already has its own built in drivers for those chipsets which were released before Windows XP SP2?

Or are chipset drivers only necessary when Windows XP SP2 doesn't recognize the chipset like with all new motherboard chipsets that were released after Windows XP SP2?

Answer:Are motherboard chipset drivers necessary even when XP already recognizes the chipset

Only that it's always going to benefit the system to have the latest chipset drivers in some small way.

Usually when installing a new OS go to the chipset web site and install the latest version then forget they exist after that. (assuming you reinstall once a year of course.)

Are there any known compatibility issues between the Intel 865 chipset and nVidia-based video cards?

The reason I ask is that after a year or more of running this system, suddenly no AGP video card I put into this system will work unless it's in plain VGA mode (no drivers). As soon as I load its proper driver, the system won't go back into Windows 98 or Windows 2000 (dual-boot system). It just hangs with a lot of gobbeldegook on the screen.

All the AGP cards I have here are nVidia-based cards so I have no other type card to test with.

At present, I'm using an old S3 PCI video card and at least it gets into Windows; but, I'm stumped.

Answer:Intel 865 Chipset and nVidia chipset issues?

Alex, I built quite a few systems with Intel D865PERL boards (865PE chipset) and nVidia video cards and never had a problem. My workbench machine right now is running a D865PERL board with a nVidia card with no problems.

Intel released a new chipset driver on 6/04/2007, version 8.3.0.1013 which covered the 865 family, eg. 865G, 865GV, 865P and 865PE.

http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-009241.htm

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...rating+Systems&lang=eng&strOSs=All&submit=Go!

In the release notes under Issues Resolved, item #4 stated; "Some devices were not updating correctly or at all. Fixed in installer."

http://downloadmirror.intel.com/13499/ENG/relnotes.htm

You may want to try that update. The only problem I see with the update is since you are dual booting, the latest update is OK with Win2K, however Win98 is not mentioned in All Operating Systems. To get back to an 865 chipset driver that covered both Win2K and Win98SE you had to go back to the release of 12/16/2004, version 6.3.0.1007 that covered both Win2K and Win98SE.

Other than updating the chipset driver, I am at a loss to suggest a place to start.

Hi guys,

some advice please. I have a friend who has passed me an advent DT2412 desktop computer.

The mobo has failed (MSI B75MA-P45) and he wants to replace it with a MSI Z77A-G43.

I suggested that this would need a fresh re-install as its a different chipset but the question I want to ask is that is he allowed to do this with the computer being a prebuild?

If my friend installed a new B75 chipset motherboard then it would be seen as a direct replacement but if he upgraded to a Z77 chipset then this would be seen as an upgrade and thus the recovery discs supplied by advent would not be valid.

am I correct in saying this?

many thanks in advance for all comments.

Answer:upgrade b75 chipset to z77 chipset - prebuild issue

I may be way off on this, and will surely be told so if I am, but I believe:

He should be able to boot into safe mode, then uninstall the old chipset in Device Manager. Reboot normally and possibly Windows will install the new chipset on its own.

Hello. Basically my friend's computer suddenly started to display a driver error(image below) whenever the computer starts up. It is possible to boot the computer after pressing F1 and choosing a boot device, it starts up normally after that. Whenever the computer is restarted, the same error displays again. I've tried to change the boot order in BIOS, unplugged any USB devices that might be causing any interference, but without any results. Someone even suggested to change CMOS battery on the motherboard, but even that did not help. Thank you in advance for any suggestions

I have GTX 460 with 258.96 drivers. I do not have an nVidia chipset. When I went to check the Driver Sweeper files, I found all these chipset files. Why do I have them?

Answer:Why do I have chipset drivers when I don't use an nvidia chipset?

Quote:
Why do I have them?

For the same reason I and everyone else does, because 7 installs base drivers for just about everything as a "just in case", regardless of the actual hardware. I have those same files as well as some from Intel, Via, SiS, etc all in the,

C:\Windows\System32\drivers

Personally I would just leave all that well enough alone as it isn't affecting anything as they never get loaded unless the hardware they are for ever gets installed. That and there is a good chance that by removing them that when SP1 does come out it will fail to install due to missing system files (ask those that had that happen after removing various unused driver files and whatnot with vlite on Vista).

Ok i went to cercuit city to get my computer for Chrismas. I asked for a good gaming computer. The computer cost over $600 plus monitor, printer, keyboard ext. It is windows vista and i thought it would be a greate computer for games. Well, not really. The computer has an Express chipset family graphics. I install Jointoperations and it wont run, you guesed it. The video card did not complete the game test. Most of my games i had dident work too well, except for my Steam games like Half-Life, Day of Defeat, Counter-Strike ext. NOW LISTEN TO THIS YOU WONT BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dads computer broke so we went to walmart and got a cheap one without the monitor just the mouse and keyboard, and computer. It cost over $200!!!!! i new that computer sucked. But i was wrong. I installed Steam games and they run greate. My starcraft game runs excelent. I wanted to see if Joinoperations would work on his computer. So i Install it and it passed the game test. It runed fine. The video card on this computer is a NvidIA Geforce chipset. NOW WHAT IS UP WITH THAT! Every thing on my dads computer is excelent except the CPU speed wich is still ok.

What do u think of this?? Please reply.

Answer:I cant belive this!!! vista chipset v.s XP Chipset

Sounds like you listened to a salesman instead of researching it yourself. All he wants is the sale.

But Vista does run games. You may need to tweak it and reduce services to run them better. And try compatibility mode to run them under XP SP2 in Vista if you still have problems.

I'm about to upgrade my system by swapping out the motherboard. Both are ASUS, both Intel chipsets, but the chipset is different and I'm sure some of the onboard controllers. I've read that Windows 7 is very good about this sort of upgrade and all I need to do is load the drivers for the new motherboard, if they aren't already loaded automatically by Windows. I also keep reading about the need to sysprep a Win 7 installation before swapping motherboards.

In my specific case, is a sysprep necessary? Recommended or advised, even if not strictly necessary?

Is it necessary or advisable to remove the unused drivers from the H55 chipset motherboard?

As always, thanks in advance. Even though I am not a Win 7 expert, I do contribute replies to other people's questions in other forums.

Cursor is smooth and fast at startup (and in safe mode), sound works fine (startup noise) but when everything loads and Windows is actually usable, it's like the PC works great .. until you move the cursor.

Cursor is choppy and affects sounds. I can watch video and listen to music perfectly, until I move the cursor.

I made a video of this:

Things I've tried: uninstalling / reinstalling / repairing / etc. mouse drivers, video card drivers, network adapter drivers (thought the problem was related to network activity because of startup/safe mode behaviour being normal), catalyst control centre, etc.

All the specs I can think of, let me know if you think any other info would help

In task manager performance tab, cpu goes to 100% usage when the cursor is moved around.

New build, no viruses, scanned for good measure with Avast (then uninstalled Avast to see if it helped), Malwarebytes, Spybot, Microsoft Security etc. I don't see how infection could even be a problem at this point

Hi,

I think my chipset is Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.93GHz and my motherboard is Gigabyte GA-8TRC410M-NF but when using Driver Genius to scan for driver updates it reports back AMD South Bridge Driver (PCI bus) & AMD Chipset Drivers (ATII/O Communications Processor SMBus Controller) need installing/updating ?

Do I need them ? I think I've installed ATI Catalyst before for the SMBus driver but recently uninstalled because I didn't understand what it was for and didn't like the folder/installer

Answer:AMD Drivers On An Intel Chipset (South Bridge & Chipset Drivers ?)

First thing, check your specs just to be 100% sure of what you have.

Second, Driver Genius and any similar program is not really recommended as they aren't particularly reliable.

Then if you still have drivers for stuff you don't have we can talk about them.

and

Question is (since my budget is so tight) will I notice any real difference by choosing the less expensive SIS chipset board over the Intel chipset board?

Answer:SIS chipset vs. Intel chipset

Not an answer to your question exactly, just an observation:

I would look for a main board with PCI Express graphics interface instead of AGP.
AGP video cards are still available, but the overwhelming majority of new cards are PCI-X, and they are generally a bit cheaper than their AGP counterparts.

Unless, of course, you want to transfer an AGP card over to the new board.

Hi,  I just bought Envy x360 2-in-1 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory and I found it is making noise even if I am not doing anything.  I completed my account setup and install chrome and started using the laptop; the noise is continuouly coming up- not sure cooling fan or HD noise.  I am thinking to replace it (might be defective) or return it.  Please advice if anyone has any experience with this model.

I bought a W520 recently, but i can't tolerate the fan noise even 2500 rpm, because i usually work alone late at night.So...

Answer:Ask W530 fan noise compare W520 fan noise

There has to be some amount of air movement to cool even the idling CPU. 2700 RPM is not a very fast rotation for the cooling uniit.

Hi all,

Got my new PC mid Jan so wasn't expecting any issues. However in the last week startup has become a noisy process. The best description is of a grind/rattle which only lasts a few minutes and then settles down.

I suspect it's an issue with a fan, though which one I am not sure. Dust/wires has been voiced as a possible but I've only had the machine a month and a bit.

It's under warranty so I've got the option of sending it back to be looked at, this involves collection/delivery and would see me PC-less for at least a week. I spoke to the firm I bought the machine from and they suggested opening it up and seeing if there was a snagged wire or dust issue. I'm just a bit concerned about trying to solve it this way as though I played around with my old PC I really don't want to open this one up unnecessarily. There's also the fact that it might be something more serious, perhaps a fan issue (I've read something about ballbearings).

Anyway - thoughts and advice welcome as ever.

cheers

Answer:Noise issue on startup - possible fan issue?

If you have proof and only if you have proof that the company authorized opening the computer would I suggest opening the computer.
Have them send you a email which would be proof. If you don't have proof I would send it back for them to inspect. It will take time and trouble on your part but you don't want to loose the warranty.

My T60 is about 18 months old.  In the past few days an unpleasant noise has developed and is getting louder.  I have run chkdsk and it reports no errors.   I took out the disk (Seagate 80GB 95mm 5400rpm)  and cleaned around it.  But noise stays.  I could replace the hard disk before it dies but don't want to that if  the problem is really the fan. Or something else.  How can I tell?

Answer:How to distinguish fan noise from disk noise

Hello ronssherman, I would suggest to clean your vents, with a vacuum cleaner or some compressed air (blow form inside to outside). Here you´ll get some videos, how to open your system safely.

Question: New Chipset

I'm currently running an AGP NVidia 7800 on a 2.16 Ghz AMD Processor. Going into buying the graphics card, I know that it would be a heavy load on my processor, but I did it anyway. I now can't stand the crashes and the slow responses on many occasions and am either looking to buy a new chipset or just sell my old computer (although I'd probably not get much out of it) and buy a new one.

Basically I'm looking for a good chipset that supports possibly AGP and PCI Express and that also has a kick butt processor. (I'm a gamer, and movie/photo editor) So I'm wondering if someone could direct me to something like this if there is such a thing.

Thanks.

Question: USB chipset

Hey, could anyone please tell me what chipset the "2 Port SUNIX PCI USB1.0 card" uses? (I believe the product is UHA-001)

I've been having trouble getting USB devices to work, and I've read that the VIA chipset, among others, can be troublesome, so I'de like to know which one my card uses in order to resolve the issues. I've looked everywhere.

Thanks

Answer:USB chipset

i have no idea on the chipset, but have you installed the via 4in1 utility. This takes care of a lot of probs with VIA chipsets.

Question: Chipset

Hi everyone

I have decided to build a new pc and have a question for all of you. I am going to go with one of these two choices and was wondering which chipset you would recomend. The SIS645 chipset or the VIA P4X400 I will be running a P4 2.53 with 533mhz front side bus, 512mb of pc2700 memory, geforce4Ti4200, and a maxtor 60gb with Ultra ATA133. The two boards I am choosing from are the Soyo "SY-P4S Dragon Ultra" or the "SY-P4X400 Dragon Ultra Platinum Edition". I can get a better deal on the "SY-P4S" and it handles what I want to install, But was concerned in the chipsets mainly. Which would you recomend?

Thanks and hope to see your replies

Crylynx

Answer:Chipset

I dislike SiS. They seem to have the budget board segment locked up though. I'd say if you can swing it for a P4 go for an Intel chipset.

Question: USB Chipset

Is it possible for a USB chipset to be bad, whereby, USB mice, keeyboards and printers work fine, but a scanner will not work (although recognized).

I bought a Canoscan 44ooF scanner and even after getting a replacement and spending a week of e-mails with Canon tech support, followed by hours of live phone calls, we have not been able to get them working.

The last Canon Tech stated that it all points to bad USB chipset. (All USB drivers are current).

Answer:USB Chipset

If the Canon Tech is right, your solution could be a PCI USB card; it installs in a PCI slot and provides additional USB ports on back of your computer. Some of these cards also have pins for connecting the wires leading to the front USB ports.

Here's a very inexpensive one, which might do the trick for you: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815166001

I have one of these installed in my computer. It has two rear ports and has the wires for front ports. Since my motherboard's onboard USB supported USB 2.0 on the rear ports but only USB 1.1 on the front ports, this card allowed me to upgrade the front ports to USB 2.0. The rear ports have worked fine. The front ones did not always work right during the first few weeks this card was installed; those ports would sometimes drop back to USB 1.1. But, in the last few months, the problem has not occurred; they've consistently functioned as USB 2.0. Why that early problem? Did it just need some burn-in time? I don't know. But, take a look at the reviews on newegg.com; they show 79% of reviews giving it a 5-star rating, which is pretty good.

You may consider a third-party chipset cooler, applied with ArctisSilver5.
Zalman coolers come to mind.

I understand that when you change Chipsets one should Install OS from scratch Hence getting rid of all .INF Files and regestry values. But,,If one was to stay in the same chipset family, i.e. Intel 845 & 845E, respectively in a Compaq(845) & MSI i845E-Max.
Would it be recomended to fresh install aswell?
My plan is to get an AMD "VIA" chipset MOBO and replace my MSI P4 platform. "I" need to format and re-install my OS, Now i want to put My old setup in my girls Compaq "IT" has a totaly "Locked" Intel 845 chipset P4 MOBO in it,,swaping it out would be as simple as that rite? Would just installing/updating .inf files be ok?

Both running Win98SE
Thanks all.:grinthumb

Answer:Chipset & OS Help,,,

Win98SE is pretty good at detecting and adapting to new hardware, so you might as well give it a go. There are no guarantees that it will work, and it is always better to reinstall if you have the time, especially since Win98SE does get slower with use.

I want to install xp on a pIII system with a 440 chipset but can't find a chipset up-date inf for xp and this chipset at intels site, what to do

Answer:xp on a 440 chipset

IIRC (it's been a while), XP has the drivers built in for the 440. Just install and go with whatever it gives you (standard dual IDE controller, I would guess). Are you needing something more than that?

If you really want to, you should be able to google around and find drivers or try something like driverguide.com but I haven't been there in a while.

Question: Right ChipSet

I just got an ASUS P5LD2 R2.0 motherboard. I ordered R2.0 and that?s what my board and box said. Thought all was good. After a little research, I found that bios was reporting v1.0 as well was ASUS Probe and CUP-Z. It was also reporting an i945G/Gx Chipset rather than i945p. Could the software be wrong, because there is no video port or anything in BIOS to turn on or off? If they sub the i945p for the i945G/Gx Chipset, will it hurt performance? I?m using an E6300 with no problems.
Thanks

Question: chipset fan

Okay i have a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP motherboard which happens to have a heatsink and fan on the chipset. Recently a strange (and loud) whirring noise was coming from my comp and upon investigation i found out it was my chipset fan. I tried cleaning it thoroughly (had a some dust on it) and after putting it back on it was still making that noise.

I unplugged the fan from the motherboard and am running it without the fan as i write this message.

Is this going to be detrimental to my chipset? Not many motherboards have fans on the chipsets so im wondering if just the heatsink would cut it.

Also is there any programs that will let me monitor the temp of my chipset to make sure its all okay??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:chipset fan

Replace the chipset fan, looks like a 40mm.
