Preferred Solution: Icon In taskbar ?????

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For some reason FireFox doesnt want me to use my own icon for it in the taskbar. ill change the icon, pin it to the taskbar, click the new icon and itll open up a new firefox default icon on the taskbar so there will be 2.

anyway around this?

Answer:FireFox Taskbar Icon, Makes Duplicate Taskbar Icon's

Let's fix the duplicate icon first, open Firefox from the pinned icon you have already after the second one opens up unpin the first one and pin the second one that should stop the duplicate icon.

Now the icon go to C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar then right-click on the Firefox shortcut click on properties make sure you're in the Shortcut tab and click on the Change Icon Button. After you open up Firefox again icon will revert back to the default icon because it opens up Firefox.exe you would have to change the icon in the .exe for a permanent change.

I have nicely pinned all my key stuff (Google Calendar, Gmail, google maps, etc. to the Win10 taskbar, but everything I open opens in Chrome.
If I click my iTunes taskbar-icon then iTunes opens and its taskbar-icon brightens and a little blue bar appears on its taskbar's bottom edge--iTunes opens FROM the iTunes icon.
If I click Google Calendar, G-mail, maps, etc., these icons remain black, and all this opened windows just stack up in Chrome very messily.
The intention was to have them open in Chrome but FROM their taskbar-icon, so they're nice and neat and separate and always right there conveniently.
How can I make pinned-to-taskbar stuff open from its own taskbar icon and not from Chrome?

Hey all, my girlfriend is running Win 7 Home... she has always had the default Windows speaker "volume" icon down on her task bar by her clock. She uses it all the time to switch between her speakers and her headset, where she right clicks on the icon and selects "playback devices" and then changes between her soundcard/speakers and her usb headset.

Anyway, it disappeared last night.

Now open Taskbar, click on the "customize" link, get the window to select which icons appear... on the speaker "volume" icon under behaviors, it is set to "show icon and notifications"...

Then at the bottom click the link for "turn system icons on or off" and on that window, the icon is greyed out and set to OFF and it can not be changed to ON.

She's been bugging the heck out of me ever since to fix it.

We have no idea what changed it, or how it got changed.... we just know its been there and she's used it, for the past two years, and now its suddenly not there.

Any suggestions?

Hi, all of a sudden and for no reason, various icons have stopped loading for both the programs and files used by these programs:

Microsoft Edge
Various Windows Programs

The programs still work fine but I would like to have the icons back.
This seems to be a problem that many people are having but I can find no definite solution.

Any ideas?

I'm having a big problem. I screwed something up with my taskbar and I can't undo it.

I logged on as usual. An annoying message popped up at the lower right corner of the desktop, above, not in, the taskbar, alerting me to something I should download and install that I have no intention of downloading and installing. In the past, each time I've logged on and this message has appeared, I have simply clicked on "cancel" or just clicked the X at its upper right corner. But this time, I must have taken leave of my senses! Instead of just right clicking the X in its right corner, I clicked something else on it and a message window popped up. That message window advised me to either "download" the irrelevant auxiliary toolbar I have no need of and will not download and install, or click "cancel". But it also offered me the chance to click a checkbox next to "do not show this message again on taskbar". At least that's what I recall it said. So I clicked on that, in an attempt to keep it from popping up every time I logged on (removing the annoying message from the action center each time it popped up upon logon never had the effect of preventing it from popping up again the next time I logged on, which is why I tried this "do not show ..." choice this time).

But once I did that, I found I am no longer able to make two things work on my desktop taskbar with the customary left clicks.

It no longer does ... Read more

I don't want to combine my windows, but when i have only one window open in any program, i know what it is and don't need to see the label as that makes the whole taskbar filled up pretty fast.
Is there a way to hide labels when there is one window open, and show labels when having multiple windows?
I've tried googling it but it doesn't seem like it is possible with some program either.

Answer:Taskbar, only icon when one window, icon+label when multiple windows?

Nevermind, catered to my needs by altering the minimum width of the taskbar "entries".

I need help getting to the bottom of this, not sure why it's happening, or when it started happening, maybe a week ago...

I get a seemingly random icon flash on the taskbar for no more than a few miliseconds, so i checked
event viewer to track down what was happening and the only thing i can find is 2 events in the subcategory
Application that states the source as RestartManager
and the event ID as 10000 and 10001, these both appear every time the icon flashes on the taskbar

I think this issue is also causing fullscreen flash vids to show the taskbar and a loading circle on the cursor... also Battlefield 4 likes to get a black screen then when i alt-tab i'm back to the game without any crashing or any error besides this ominous
black screen

I'm running 8.1 legit

I have created a shortcut icon which takes me directly to my Online Banking Login page.
I would like to place this icon (an image of a padlock taken from windows icon cache) on the taskbar.
My problem is, when I drag the icon to the taskbar a popup asks me if I want to 'Pin to Internet Explorer'...this is the only option given.
If I drop the icon onto the taskbar it changes my 'Padlock' icon to that of Internet Explorer...Clicking on this IE icon still takes me to my Online Banking Login page but I find it confusing having an IE icon.

Does anyone know how I can have my 'Padlock' icon showing on the taskbar.

At Windows 7, I created 3 program shortcuts which execute same executable. Then I changed icons for second shortcut and third shortcut. When I launched the executable from the second and third shortcut, the taskbar icon of the executable will be that of the shortcut icon instead of the executable MainForm icon. In XP and Vista, it will use MainForm icon in the taskbar. Is this the intended behaviour of Windows 7?

Recently my battery icon disappeared on my taskbar and in its place is a blank spot. When I turned the power icon display off and back on, the space went away and reappeared. I turned my Wifi icon display off and back on and where the wifi icon once appeared, the battery icon displayed and a blank space appeared next to it where the wifi icon would be displayed. I've included two screenshots to show my issue: Is there anything else I can do other than a system restore to a previous version? I feel as though ever since my warranty ran out (literally two days after) I've had nothing but annoyances with this computer and have had to do too many system restores. Thanks.

Double check to make sure that you have the have the Services "Network
Connections", "Network List Service", "Network Location Awareness", and
"Network Store Interface Service" set to Started and Automatic. If these
are not, then it can cause the Network icon to not function properly.

Hope this helps,

well he was partially right, there was something not running and one of them was manual. but it still does the same thing, hope someone can help me. also it seems to occur mostly when my aircard is connected, it is pcmcia btw. it is from t-mobile and i disabled the wifi antenna on the air card since my laptop already has one and it (aircard wifi) is being a pain because it is trying to connect even tho my laptop antenna is connected, which it's why it is disabled.

Currently, my OneDrive icon is sitting in the 'hidden icons' section. I have seen pictures of the icon sitting on the taskbar next to Edge, the store, and all the other taskbar icons... how do you get that icon on the taskbar? I have tried all the normal ways I can think of (click and drag onto taskbar, going into taskbar settings, etc) but I can't get it to be removed from the hidden icons area. Anyone know of a way? Could this have been something that was tested in the TP and changed for the RTM version?

Wish I had a better title, but I wasn't sure how to word this.

Basically what's happening is I have 2 instances of Firefox (different versions and different folder locations) and one of the instances is not opening where it's icon location is.

Example Screenshot:
As you can see. The far left instance does not want to open where it's icon location is.
The far right version always does it.
Even if I unpin the currently working instance (blue/orange icon) to only house 1 firefox instance (grey/black), the grey/black instance will still not open like the blue/orange instance current does (in it's own icon).
Hopefully this isn't confusing for anyone. I searched for a few terms to see if anyone had this problem and nothing came up, maybe I wasn't wording my searches correctly.

Hopefully someone can give some insights.

Right click does nothing, Task manager(applications) doesn't show the program, so I can't end task, and I don't see any processes(unnecessary) that would be attached to this. Answer:Taskbar does not keep mp3 icon

i dont think it will as it is acting as a drive, drives only show on the " computer" window.

however you could try clicking devices and printers in the start menu and see if it shows there.
if it does then right click it and create a shortcut.
you may be able to pin the shortcut to the taskbar.

Life is great and then you get a computer---oh boy

Answer:No icon in taskbar

The icons will not show up until you connect. (on a dialup) This is normal. When you disconnect from the internet, the icon disappears also. If you are on a LAN, you can turn these on also, when the LAN is disconnected, a RED X appears in the little TV icon. In other words, on a dialup connection, the icons are supposed to disappear when the connection is lost. Exception to this is on an external modem, then the icon should appear with a RED X through it when disconnected. Do you have an external modem? The LAN icon will always be present when a network card is installed. The LAN and Dialup icons look alike. I hope I understood your problem. If not, please post back with the exact type of connection you are using and as much info about where exactly you are going to reset you icon. Thanks

Answer:icon on taskbar

Hello Right click on a blank area of the desktop.Select "Arrange Icons By".Do you have a check mark next to "Auto Arrange" ?A check mark next to "Auto Arrange" will cause an icon that is dragged to spring back to where it was when trying to move it from one place to another on the desktop, but it should have no bearing on adding an icon to the Quick Launch bar. Now, regarding trying to drag it to the you mean that you are trying to add that icon to the Quick Launch bar ?When you drag it to the Quick Launch bar, you left click on the icon, continue to hold onto the left click, and drag it.As you hover over the Quick Launch bar, do you see an I bar cursor (shaped like the capital letter I) in that spot on the Quick Launch bar where you intend to drop it ? Are you letting go of the left click of the mouse when you see the I bar cursor ?I don't think a locked taskbar will cause that. I just tried dragging an icon to my Quick Launch bar, and was successful in dragging/dropping it onto the Quick Launch bar. I tried it with/without a check mark next to "Auto Arrange", and with the taskbar locked/unlocked. I am unable to recreate your issue.See if this article helps (has screen shots):How do I add an application to the Windows Quick Launch Bar?

I have created a VBS file, when i open it in the taskbar i get the standard 'Icon Missing' Type icon in the taskbar, and was wondering how to change it to a custom icon, like the one bellow (from my school)
All help appreciated.

Answer:Add Taskbar icon to .vbs

Did you try creating an actual shortcut to the .vbs file then right-clicking it and choosing Properties then Change icon? The icon you want to use has to be on the HDD in a Folder, usually in the same Folder as the file, and you'd choose that icon. It's best to save the icon as a .ico file and adhere to the size limit for it, can't be very large. Most icons associated with programs are embedded in their .exe file, maybe in a .dll file.

hello everyone,I was arranging my icons on my taskbar and deleted them. I thought no big problem, I'll just drag them back from my desktop. I have the taskbar unlocked, and when I click on the handle to drag it to the right to make room for the icons it doesn't move. In the taskbar start menu, the quick launch doesn't stay checked. When I right click on the taskbar>tools> quick launch, I can't check the quick launch. I'm not having any issues. I did a system restore to no avail. That seldom works for anyone, but it seems we always do it. Obviously, I must have done something wrong, because when I deleted them, I deleted them all at once. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.Best Regards,Gil777t

Answer:Can't put icon in the taskbar

Use the search box and search for "Quick Launch" (Use the quotation marks). It should be  C:\users\(your username)\appdata\roaming\microsoft\internet explorer\quick launchThis is the folder your shortcuts need to be in, drag them there, maybe that will help.Edit: No need to drag them there, I just realized if you right click on a shorcut on your desktop there is an option to "Add to Quick Launch" . Just check to make sure you have the folder.

Hi here,
I would like to know if somebody know a script or registry which can helps me to hide IE icon on the taksbar and start menu?
Thanks for your feddback.

Answer:Hide IE icon on taskbar

You can "unpin" any icon from the Taskbar (right-click on it, unpin). You can also simply delete any icon in the Start menu.

However, once you start a program, an icon typically appears in the taskbar. If that's what you want to hide, then perhaps someone else can help you, I don't know how to do that.

There is nothing special about the IE, its icons work just as any other program's icons.

On my task bar I have my Firefox icon in the lower left. If I click on it, Firefox opens. Great. With my older XP computer, every time I click on that FF icon in the taskbar, it gives me another FF window. But in Winows7, If I click on the FF icon a gain, it just brings up the current -already open - FF window. There are work-arounds, but I would prefer the icon to always open a new window, not just open up the existing window.
The other icon on the taskbar - windows explorer - seems to have the same issue.

any way to change this?

If it works like IE, right click on the icon. You should get a menu that lets you choose another window.

Hey chaps (and chapesses) - my Acer Aspire running Win 7 has stopped showing the audio icon on the Taskbar. Some websites have very annoying music or 'announcements' so I like to switch the sound off - now I can't without going via Control Panel.
I have looked in Control panel and found System Icons - and the Sound label is shown as OFF. But the little arrow next to it to change the state is greyed out so I can't turn it back on.
I tried the 'show all icons' under Notification Area Icons but the audio still doesn't show.
Any ideas?

I have several dozen programs installed on my Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit PC. One program in particular does not display it's icon on the task bar when opened, but rather displays a generic "blank page" icon. It's icon will be displayed if I create a shortcut for the program on the desktop, just not the task bar. I have tried re-building the icon cache, to no avail. Does anyone know how to fix this? It's driving me nuts.

Thanks for any and all replies!

Answer:Generic Taskbar Icon!

I have run into that issue frequently using 7Stacks Taskbar launcher utility. The only "solution" I've found is to use a custom icon. It happens frequently enough that I have a folder for these icons under Documents. I just search for a free icon suitable for the program. If you want the exact icon from the program itself you can use an icon extraction tool to extract the icon from the exe file. Save it as .ico. Then use it as "custom icon."

Inside the shortcut there should be an Advanced Button and inside that a button for Custom Icon or Change Icon.

This "blank paper icon" bug has plagued Windows as far back as 3.x(maybe longer. But I started using Windows with version 3.0.)

How do I fix this problem?

Answer:Update icon in taskbar

First of all - Welcome to BC !
When the computer is up and running have you tried clicking on this icon to see if there is an update hanging around waiting to be downloaded and installed ?  There are very few MS updates for XP now, i think the only one routinely released is the 'Malicious software tool'.

Hello GradeAbra,

You could use the tutorial below to pin the C:\Users\(user-name)\My Documents folder to the taskbar.

As for a "desktop page" icon, it depends on what you want it to open or do since there are different ones for this. You already have a "Show desktop" button on the far right side of the taskbar if that was what you meant.

I can't fathom out this weird problem, on my Icon in the taskbar for Internet access It has a Red cross at the bottom right corner of the Icon, but my Internet connection works fine, so does my Home Network to my old XP machine and to my Smart TV and Blu Ray player, even to my Mobile phone.

Anybody know why it's got this red x on it please ?

Answer:Red X on Internet Icon in the Taskbar

Hi Atomic245,

The 'Red cross' Network icon in the 'system tray' indicates a connection that is not being used. Since your PC is connecting fine to the internet, it is likely that you have more than one 'Network connections' available for use. It is also likely that the system is connected to the internet either through 'Ethernet or Wireless'; and the other one is installed/disabled.

Please follow these steps to capture more information:

1. Click 'Start' and type 'ncpa.cpl' (without quotations) in 'Search box' and tap 'Enter' > Capture and share details

2. Click 'devmgmt.msc' (without quotations) in 'Search box' and tap 'Enter' (Device Manager Opens) > Locate and Expand 'Network Adapters' category > Capture details of all 'devices' that are listed underneath (Also check if any of these devices has a question mark/exclamation mark' besides it) > Also check 'Other Devices' category and share details of any device that is listed with a 'mark' besides it.

3. Open Command Prompt and type 'ipconfig /all' (without quotation) and tap 'Enter'. The window will display detailed information about the working of 'network connections' in the system.

Do reply with the information; would be glad to assist.

Hello all,

I've been running Windows 10 for a year or so now..
I tend to run several (dozens) of applications at the same time, and to manage that, I would hover the mouse over the icons in the task bar to see which running application, I wanted to access. For example, it isn't uncommon to have several browser windows, and several email messages open at the same time - as I research answers, or cut copy and paste from other apps...

Anyway, recently, within the last couple weeks - my running applications no longer show up in the task bar.

Furthermore, I do have locked application Icons in the task bar, i.e. Chrome, File Manager, HP etc...
When I hover the mouse over them the title pops up, but the thumbnail of the running pages is missing..

Any clues? Is this a new "feature" from a recent automatic upgrade?

Hi, I have Windows Vista 64 bit. Every so often an icon named "FFU" on the bottom right of my taskbar appears and then disappears. It sometimes coincides when I'm watching a video in VLC.

I've clicked on FFU before it disappeared and a list of options appear. One of the 20 options was crop. Then it disappears. Is FFU a program of somekind? is it spyware or a virus? I'm getting really curious as to what this is.

I have malwarebytes anti-malware and Avast Virus protection installed. I have scanned my system with Adaware and Spybot search and Destroy but nothing was found. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Answer:FFU Icon showing up in Taskbar. What is it?

Probably FFDshow. It shouldn't be appearing when VLC is running. In fact, that seems pretty impossible. But either way, it's a set of codecs that's second to none.

I've been trying to create shortcuts on my taskbar to a couple of specific urls. This was extremely easy in XP. I won't tell you what I think of Windows 7 for this simple task.

What I've been able to do: I can create a new shortcut to a specific url on the desktop. I can pin that to the start menu. When I remove the shortcut on the desktop, the shortcut on the start menu no longer works. Obviously the shortcut on the start menu is to the shortcut on the desktop, not the url.
If I try to pin the shortcut to the taskbar, it will only allow me to pin it to an existing shortcut like Internet Explorer or Firefox.

What I want to do: Have a simple shortcut on the taskbar that opens my default browser to a specific url. This would be a stand-alone shortcut, not a link on the "links" menu or pinned to the IE or Firefox shortcuts. I also don't want to clutter my desktop with shortcuts that will never be used.

Any help on this is much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,I am having a problem with a virus I guess.  I have run the big time anti-virus programs (spybot, malwarebytes, and avirn)  So far nothing has reported my problem.  This only happens when I am playing games.  The game puts an icon on the taskbar as usual but instead of setting still as you would expect it to do the icon jiggles away to the right for an inch or more and then slams to the left against any icon there.  This happens in concert with my mouse ckicks.  It seems like I remember a virus some time in the late 1990's that caused this.  Too, long ago for me.  It does not seem to be interacting with anything else but the two games that came with Win 7.  Can anyone please help as it is very annoying. Thanks much.  jdgriff77
