How to install second operating system (Ubuntu)

Question: How to install second operating system (Ubuntu)

Sorry if this has been asked before...My regular WinXp Sp2 system is runing on disk C which has just one partition. I have a spare drive (M) that I currently use for backups. Assuming that I can get a copy of Ubuntu, can I install it to this other drive (without impacting my WinXp system of course)and then have the option of booting up from either? Sounds straightforward, but I'd like your opinions first before I risk destroying my perfectly good system just so that I can see what Ubuntu looks like.Thanks.

Preferred Solution: How to install second operating system (Ubuntu)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How to install second operating system (Ubuntu)

Yes, it is easy but just follow instructions carefully. Ubuntu is good - I've used it a few times and been impressed.

I installed the Ubuntu Operating system on my computer by mistake. Foolish. But that's what happened.I thought I was installing the Ubuntu that is used for storage purposes. When I tried to restart my computer it would not restart.I inserted the "Repair disc Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit" and eventually I got my computer to startup. So I am still able to use my computer normally. But my computer now seems to be totally corrupted because all drives are labeled incorrectly and Data1 and Data2 are completely missing. I know this is true because I saw the above info while using the Repair disc Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.It seems that I am stuck with a corrupt computer. What are my options? Is my only option to reinstall windows 7?Or do a backup from an Acronis image file? What can I do?Moderator Edit: Moved topic from Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs to the more appropriate forumRoger

Answer:I installed the Ubuntu Operating system on my computer by mistake

try using sfc /f

if that fails then wat i would try next is a repair install.

Run a repair install of windows 7 from a windows 7 cd. just make sure it is the same version.

I installed the Ubuntu Operating system on my computer by mistake.

Foolish. But that's what happened.

I thought I was installing the Ubuntu that is used for storage purposes.

When I tried to restart my computer it would not restart.
I inserted the "Repair disc Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit" and eventually I got my computer to startup.

So I am still able to use my computer normally.

But my computer now seems to be totally corrupted because all drives are labeled incorrectly and Data1 and Data2 are completely missing.
This is what the Windows 7 Repair disc showed when I ran it.

The Repair disc labeled the Operating System that it finally found as "Recovered". But it was a corrupt Operating System.

But I am able see and browse all my drives and files whenever I turn on my computer.
How can that be?
The Windows 7 Repair disc says everything is corrupt.
But my computer looks perfectly normal when I turn it on.
Is my computer corrupt or not?

I tried to create an image backup of my computer using Acronis.
It gave me the below error message:
Backup failed. No reason given as to why.

Anyway I tried to fix the corruption by trying:

I tried using sfc /f
It didn't find any problems.

I ran a repair install of windows 7 from a windows 7 cd.
It didn't find any problems.

I tried to do a system restore to an earlier point in time.
None of the system restore options worked. All failed to restore to an earlier point in time.

It seems that I am st... Read more

Hi,
I have new HP laptop, which had Ubuntu installed already. decided to install Windows 8.1 64, which I had on DVD. While starting installation I choose "Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive (UEFI)" (don't know what is UEFI) and I deleted all partitions and created new ones, after that installation gone well. But when I start my computer, two OS Boot Manager appears - Ubuntu and Windows, also when I opened "This PC" there was only one Local Disk C, on which I installed Windows. So I decided to reinstall windows and hoped for better and when I installed it and after choosing Windows Boot Manager another screen loaded, "Choose Operating System" and there was two Windows 8.1 (on Volume 3) and Windows 8.1 (this restarts laptop), also there was only one partition again. default boot loader is Ubuntu's and GNU GRUB appears every time I start my laptop (if I don't press ESC). What I need is to delete everything ubuntu, windows, another windows and install new windows from fresh.
Here are screenshots:
This GNU GRUB loads when I start laptop and when I choose ubuntu boot.

Windows 8.1 on Volume 3 works.
Thank you for paying attention. I really messed up everything

Answer:how to delete ubuntu boot and choose operating system

Download: Visual BCD . Install and run it, if you get an error popup, just ignore it. Look on the left panel for entry of UBUNTU, right click on it and delete it. see screen shot

2nd Problem: You actually installed another copy of Windows 8, that's why you get a dual boot menu for Windows 8.
Please post a screen shot of disk management then we can show you how to delete the second copy of Windows 8.

My ThinkPad A21m (2628-F2U, PIII 750 MHz (256KB), 512 MB RAM) works very efficiently with Windows 2000 SP4 and seems to work better on the internet with dial-up, than my higher-powered, 2GB RAM Windows XP computers). Unfortunately, it is now difficult to get anti-virus and firewall software that are compatible with Windows 2000. (I suspect - but haven't had the chance to fully investigate it yet - that my A21m would not meet the hardware specifications for the current versions of anti-virus and firewall software anyway. I was wondering whether switching to Linux, Ubuntu, or some other operating system would help or would only add to my woes. If I switched to Linux, for example, would the Thinkpad drivers and software work with the new operating system? Would most other programs, such as Outlook Express, Microsoft Office, and so on, work with the new operating system? If anyone has had experience with the problem of Windows 2000 no longer being supported by anti-virus and firewall providers, I would appreciate your suggestions and comments. Thank you.

I had the same problem with my A21m (2628 - GXU PIII 800 MHz) a few years ago, so I upgraded it to Windows XP Professional (SP3). My machine is also fully loaded with 512 MB of RAM,  I then installed Norton as the anti-virus/firewall software. I have to admit that the machine is rather sluggish though. I tend not to use it in favour of my 3GB R500.

A friend, who is new to computers, came by with an old Compaq Presario Notebook (running Vista) to have me take a look at it and maybe install some software. We decided it might be fun to load up with Ubuntu. I have successfully loaded Ubuntu on other machines before.

So we decided to do a full install- getting rid of Vista completely. Unfortunately the system wouldn't let me load it - it simply hangs 90% through the Ubuntu install. I tried it multiple times using different install CDs- and it hung in same place each time. Of course in the process, Vista was wiped off the machine.

Unable to load Ubuntu, I decided to switch gears and install Window XP (I have an old MS Student version that has never been "activated"). It seemed as if the install is going along fine, until it too finally hangs- saying I don't have a hard drive, or the system can't find the hard drive. I was able to run the system diagnostics on the machine and of course it shows there is NO issues with the hard drive whatsoever.

Now my friend really needs his computer running, and i feel terrible that I screwed it up. If anyone out there knows what the heck might be going on, I can avoid digging up money out of my own pocket to bring it in to a shop to diagnose.

Some notes:
- System is Presario c700 notebook - bios version F.07 1.46 1024mb ram
- Vista was running just fine on it yesterday - no apparent issues except the fan runs continuously
- My friend belongs to a motorcycle c... Read more

Answer:Failed/aborted Ubuntu install-wiped out system. Now cant install Windows XP!

There might be some left over files left on the hard drive which might be causing the installation issues of either one of the Operating System's.

I would try wiping out the hard drive completely with a 3rd party program. I prefer DBAN, a link is available in my signature.

There are many people here that prefer KillDisk also - whichever one will do the same thing for you.

Hey,
I only have one hard drive, so I know I will have to create two partitions for Linux. Let me post which file I downloaded: http://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/linux/ubuntu-releases/6.06/ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso

I'm hoping this is the correct version and everything. I kind of rushed and probably downloaded the wrong version since I do have a AMD64 processor. I tried booting up with this .iso (after i burned to cd) in the cd-rom drive and at first things seemed to be going fine. I could see, etc, but after I selected the Install option, it seemed to boot to ubuntu desktop with distorted graphics card colors.

I think it's worthy to note that I had to have a friend "hack" my computer to get my graphical interface working with Linux SuSE. He logged into my pc for me and download the nvidia graphic card drivers so that I could see what was going on (lol) And things were fine up until recently.. and now I'm wanting to try another distro of Linux.

I'm thinking that the only reason that my graphics were bunked while I tried to install Linux is because I used the Intel x86 desktop cd, and not the 64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop CD (http://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/linux/ubuntu-releases/6.06/ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-amd64.iso) which I'm downloading now. 39% finished. I would like to have boot dual OS just like I had with SuSE ASAP, so please don't shy from commenting. I'm definitely not linux savvy so please be patient with me. I'm pretty efficient and w... did you tell ubuntu to install the the mbr?

you may want to try and reinstall ubuntu on your 2nd drive, and install grub to the mbr... grub will 99% of the time find your vista install and then give you the choice to boot to it or ubuntu (ubuntu is default, but you can change that later)

I have 2 hard drives, the first has Win 7 RC1 and the second has XP and Vista in their own partitions. The Win 7 boot loader gives me the choice of Win7, Vista and XP when I boot up. The question is: If I install Ubuntu onto the second HD in a currently unoccupied partion, will GRUB (which is sure to take over the booting process, from past experience) still leave me with the 3 choices I have now (assuming I do not select the Ubuntu prompt). I wwould hate to lose the ability to get into the 3 Win systems !

Thanks, Errol

Grub loader will give you two boot option one that will boot to Ubuntu and another that will load Windows 7 boot loader(normally denoted by DOS os). From there you should be able to boot into the three windows os.

Answer:Cannot install any operating system

Remove anything plugged into the computer (other than essentials)
When installing Xp, remove the partition fully (you will see this option)
Then just continue the Setup process (ie don't manually create a partition)

Try that

A friend brought me a Dell desktop computer.  It has the reinstallation disks with it.  The hard drive has been formatted.  When I try to boot up on the DVD reinstallation disk I get the message, "NTLDR is missing.  Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".  I restarted and pressed the F2 key to enter setup to make sure it was set to boot up on the DVD drive but it did not enter setup and I got the same message as again.  How can I get the computer to boot up on the DVD so I can reinstall the operating system?

Hi

My computer is right now, Windows XP. I am trying to install another operating system onto my computer. I'm not very connected to what I'm doing, I just know what steps to take with this CD.
I wouldn't know what part of this it would be called but I have a picture of what it does.

"cant read the following volume /mnt/restore.000 enter another full path"

I've used this CD before, but this would be the first time it's done this.
Is this fixable and how can I?

There have been a noticeable number of users that want to change their OS from Windows 8 and come to the community to ask questions about this process. However, after a few weeks of use and the upgrade to Windows 8.1, I decided that the operating system was just fine, and performance was even better than Windows 7 which I have on my office computer. All my old software works fine on Windows 8.1 including "ancients" such as Paintshop Pro X and AutoCAD 2005.

Answer:how to install two operating system

You can have both installed as a "dual boot" system but they can't share applications as they both run separately and independent of each other. Each time you boot up, the boot loader will ask you to choose which one you want to use for that session.

You'll need to install each third-party application in Windows XP, then install it again in Windows 7 just like you would if you had two computers. Bear in mind you'll also need to make sure that the application in question is compatible with the version of Windows you're installing it on (some older third-party apps won't run on Windows 7 so for those you'll have to use XP instead).

You also need to check that your PC is actually capable of running Windows 7 & that you can obtain all the Windows 7 drivers it needs in case the Windows 7 DVD doesn't contain some of them. For a system compatibility check go here:

You can not restore from Rescue/Recovery button at boot?No Recovery disks created? When you install Vista from scratch, you will have NONE of the Lenovo suppliedprograms and drivers. You would need to download and install any that youneed and/or want from Lenovo support:  LINK Just put the model number in the Quick Path box on the right side. Yes, you will need to start over with a generic Vista install, which inmany ways is better, as you can customize it to fit your tastes. It just takes more research or experience to know which drivers and programsyou really need.

You might try contacting Dell. You will need the model number, Serial Number and Service tag number (should be on tower, under the front USB cover). It is possible they will send you (may be small fee but they will tell you how much) recovery disks for that particular unit.
Other than that, I think you will need to buy a retail copy of XP.
Several years ago, we purchased a refurbished Dell and was able to get the disks from them (they overnight shipped them to us at N/C.

Can anybody give me instructions on installing windows 98 on an older laptop that has interchangeable cd-rom and floppy drives. When I boot from the floppy, it will not put the cd-rom driver on because it does not see it. I dont have the option of booting from the cd-rom. The boot order in the BIOS says expansion bays, not C:,D:,floppy.

Answer:operating system install

you must use a usb floppy, youll have to set your bios to boot from the usb port

I just put together a new system and cannot install any operating system onto it. I've tried Windows 7 x64 and x32 as well as Ubuntu 11.04 x64. They all stall out the same way (pictured below). For Windows, it stalls out just after resizing the screen to fit the optimum monitor resolution. For Ubuntu, it stalls out on the first dot after going through the dots under the logo twice. I'm trying to install the operating system from a flash drive in both cases. As this occurs with both OSes, I'm of the opinion that there's something wrong with the hardware, but what? (I'm currently on an Asus Eee, so burning a disk would be difficult at best) I've tried resetting CMOS and taking everything apart and putting it back together again and googling the problem, leaving the system on for 15 minutes in that state.

System configuration:
Motherboard: GA-M68MT-S2P rev 3.0 with onboard graphics (NVidia GeForce 7025/NVidia NForce 630a)
Processor: AMD Phenom II x6 1090T black box
RAM: Kinsington KVR1333D3N9/2G x2
Harddrive: Seagate 1TB LP Serial ATA HD 5900/32MB/SATA-3G

The only difference between Windows and Ubuntu is the color of the screen. Below is Ubuntu. Windows is blue when it does this, but otherwise looks the same.
Edit: Ah, I cannot post a picture. It is diagonal lines that go from the lower right corner to the upper left. They are composed of short lines with white and black pixels on either with some white lines intermixed.

Hi

I'm working on a friend's laptop (German laptop at that... it's a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo La1703), and am hoping for some fellow geek help!

The computer was running very slowly. It had TONS of startup programs, even ones I couldn't disable in msconfig... and yes, I realize that's for troubleshooting only, but I WAS troubleshooting. Anyway, they didn't care about wiping the drive, just wanted me to reinstall Windows.

The OS on it was Vista (German Vista... presented a slight challenge for me heh). Well, I put a Vista install disk in, and deleted all partitions on the drive, made the whole drive a partition, and proceeded to install Vista.

Or not. It got stuck at Expanding Files (1%). When I mean stuck, I mean I started in the evening, and let it run ALL NIGHT... got up in the morning, it was still boasting it'd gotten 1% figured out on Expanding Files.

So, I figured maybe the install disk was messed up somehow (I use slow-burned copies, because I'll be darned if my original disks get messed up). I tried another disk, this time Windows 7 install disk (I couldn't find another Vista disk at the time, so I was simply seeing if it would work). Same thing!

I tried booting into Puppy Linux with a slow-burned CD... all the load-up status messages showed up, then just a blank screen?

Half an air dust can later, the computer's clean as a whistle. Memtest86 ran fine (I even re-seated the 2 512MB DDR2 RAM stic... Read more

HiI am currently running Windows XP on a 160GB HDDMy goal is to install Windows 7 on a new HDD I have purchased. I want to do this over the weekend so I dont have any business downtime. What I want to know is if the task is not complete by Monday (there is a lot of information I need to transfer across from the old drive), can I simply plug the 160GB HDD back in by itself and boot up Windows XP with no issues.

Answer:New Operating System Install

"My goal is to install Windows 7 on a new HDD I have purchased....can I simply plug the 160GB HDD back in by itself and boot up Windows XP with no issues."Probably, but it'd be best to go into the BIOS and write down the settings for the current (160GB) drive, if you can do so. If your new one is a different model, size, manufacturer, it may have some issues (re-)recognizing the old drive. Also, you should back up any important data in case something goes horribly wrong. Also (actually, first), make sure your machine has enough "horsepower" to handle Win7 adequately (given your specs, it probably should):http://windows.microsoft.com/upgrad..."Channeling the spirit of jboy..."

and an off topic question: how long would you expect a brand new computer to last (with good cooling and kept clean both with dust and programs)?

Answer:how do i install my operating system?

From the link,

"THIS ITEM IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE"

For the record though,
A "OEM" system builders disk will install on almost any unit .

A brand name manufacturers [Vista] OEM disk will usually only work on the unit it actually goes to.

Hello,

I have a dell latitude CPI laptop. Has windows 98. I would like to have a new operating system XP (like what I have on my PC at home)

I tried to do a clean install on the latptop with format c: s/ (to save the system files) and to wipe the harddrive clean. I then installed MS XP Home edition. When it boots up, it shows I have the two operating systems on the harddrive. Maybe that isn't a problem, but I would think it would take up harddrive space.

I would like to start over!! and wipe the harddrive clean and reinstall the XP operating system. Any ideas?

It seems like the install of the XP operating system is alot EASIER than window 95 and 98 were. It's been along time since I've done this kind of thing!! I didn't need the floppy drive. worked all from the CD!!
Thanks!
bt

PS: After installing, I discovered how MS now requires you to register the operating system. I had installed XP from the cds I have from my PC.

Today I purchased an OEM XP Operating system on-line $48.00. They claim it will be a new unregistered system, just without the paperwork, etc. I am thinking I will keep use the cd's from my pc as I know that works and just register the numbers I get from the version I just paid for. Will that work? I keep seeing SP2 in the forum. Is that a fix for XP? Could I be getting an older version of XP????
I am so thankful I found this site!

Hi Guys, Hope i have posted this in right place as im not sure if my problem is a hardware problem or software. Here Goes
I bought a second hand laptop Its a Compaq Armada with 1ghz processor 192mb ram (soon to be upgraded to 576mb) This machine came with a floppy drive only i have now bought a dvdrom for it that interchanges with floppy drive. It appears to have originally had windows 2000 on it and i would like to put xp home on it. When i turn it on this is what i get "Initializing Intel Boot Agent Version 2.6 (build004)" Then it goes to a message saying "Non-System disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready" I have downloaded 6 boot disks from microsoft and i have a new copy of xp home. I put in the first boot disk and all seemed to be going well. It prompted for the disks and one by one i started to feed them in but when i get to the forth disk i get a message " File vga.sys is corrupt" and it aborts the whole operation. Im stuck i dont know whats gone wrong, in fact i dont know very much about computers at all so any help would be very much appreciated. Many Thanks in Advance.

Answer:install Operating system

You shouldn't need any boot disks at all. Put in the XP CD and that is bootable into the setup. You probably need to go into the BIOS and change it so that it tries to boot from CD first.

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The computers hardware may not support booting to this disk, ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers bios menu.

I have not seen this before and i have setup a few of these units, i go into the bios and there is no mention of disk controller. The configuration is set to raid in the bios.

Answer:how to install a second operating system

according to Hoyle - you know Hoyle, right?  - the older OS must be installed first.  At least, this was necessary when setting up dual boot configurations with two older versions of Windows.  Now, I've seen references on the Internet about scenarios where XP can be installed after Vista to setup a Vista/XP dual boot system.  But, regarding installing a pre-XP version of Windows after Vista has been installed, I believe, from any practical viewpoint, it can't be done.  So, if you want to install W2K and Vista, figure on formatting your hard drive, installing Win 2K, and then installing Vista. If you're not satisfied with this answer, try a Google search on dual boot Windows 2000 and Windows Vista.

I have never actually installed an operating system onto a base system before but need to install one onto a system my Brother-in-law recently purchased. The OS I am installing is Windows 98 and I have the Full retail version as opposed to the Upgrade or OEM versions. In order to do the installation am I supposed to insert the disk and then set the BIOs to boot from the Cd-Rom?

Answer:How do I install an Operating System onto a PC?

Yep, and you will follow the directions from there. If this is a somewhat recent system, your brother in law won't want Win98 on it. I wouldn't waste my time, unless it was Windows 2000 or Windows XP. There's a chance that Win98 drivers won't exist for the newer hardware.

how to do it, is it even safe for the computer ?

Answer:how to install 2nd operating system and another HD

You can install the hard drive, and then when installing Win7 it'll automatically create the boot entries for you.

But, FWIW, I don't think that you'll get anything extra out of the 64 bit version unless you add more RAM also.

1. Why stay with Windows 8?
There have been a noticeable number of users that want to change their OS from Windows 8 and come to the community to ask questions about this process. There are several factors that lead to this, the big one being that the release of Windows 8 introduced a BIOS replacement (UEFI) on a large scale and this creates a new challenges for those who want to use legacy options. Also, certain components (Bay Trail CPU for example) are not qualified to work with Windows 7.

Thanks for posting this Acer-Cory. When I first bought my Aspire XC-605 a few months ago, I was considering "downgrading" to Windows 7.

Answer:Cannot install operating system

Have you tried wiping the drive to 0's? Then reformatting it. There is some software you can down load to do this. Such as Kill Disk. The drive may have some corrupt files on it more or less that did not get wipe off If you have formatted. Western Digital software use to have a program that would write 0's to drive. But not sure if they do now. This could be worth a try.

From the snapshot you posted, it is clear that your hard drive is a "Dynamic" one. Windows Vista , 7 and Server 2008 won't support installing to "Dynamic" disk.

You cannot select or format a hard disk partition when you try to install Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

This problem may occur for one of the following reasons:
Windows is incompatible with a mass storage controller or a mass storage driver.A mass storage controller or a mass storage driver is outdated. The hard disk on which you want to install Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 is a dynamic disk.A data cable in the computer is loose, or another hardware issue has occurred. The hard disk or the Windows file system is damaged. You tried to select a FAT32 partition or another type of partition that is incompatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Unfortunately, there is no safe way to convert a dynamic disk with more than four partitions to "Basic Disk". The process is too risky and may cause data loss.

Installing from USB stick - no problems during the install.

After first reboot, system displays Operating System Not found unless the USB stick is present,
and the let it go through press any key to install from USB WITHOUT pressing any key.

Performed multiple installs, BIOS boot list is correct Hard Drive is top of boot list, BIOS set to AHCI Mode.

I have read multiple forums and tried the following to no avail:
Re-formatted drive from another computer (USB to SATA Cable) via windows 7 O/S
diskpart clear all
diskpart to set up partitions
Formatted during the install process
Manual bootrec /rebuildbcd, bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot
Fix via Visual BCD Editor
Fix via install USB advanced repair options

Been at this for a few days now and probably can't see the wood for the trees.
Not a total novice more of a Unix man but this is really doing my head in....

was the intention to build the pc for an XP install. as there are more options. besides xp being unsupported, i imagine a new build machine would have enough grunt for win7, which would, (if wanted) be offered an upgrade to win10. theres also various, linux cd ISO's for free to download.

as for the installation it could be to do with boot order. check the settings either in bios or see post for boot order Fkey to bring up the menu when booting up:

Start your computer from the Windows XP CD (or boot disks). ...
When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD.

Answer:H500s Can't Install Any Operating System

Hello wuchiren,This error can occure when your BIOS is not completely compliant with the ACPI. Here is one bypass that could help. Restart your computer and press F7. You should get this message: Press F6 if you need to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver screen. Do it and see if it helps. It should disable ACPI and install Standard HAL.

I recently swapped out the hard drive in my computer and did a full reinstall of the Windows 10 operating system.  I was having some problems with the computer-- it was a big mix of symptoms.  It was unclear what was causing it but slight chance that the hard drive was the cause, so maybe it will be solved now.  Another possibility is that the drivers were the issue so maybe I can solve the problem in this "driver reinstall" step, which is the subject of this post. So far all that I have done is install the operating system, and hacked around with notepad and web browsing a little (the latter was not a step, just part of doing some other work that I was in the middle of).  So, I am seeking help with drivers.  I found the web page with the drivers for my computer. I am comparing them to the devices that show in device manager.  Here is the webpage that seems to have some of the relevant drivers:http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...0-300-Desktop-PC-series/6879020/model/7127002Although this link seems to cover multiple similar models from HP. My computer model number is HP 500-336Should I be relying on device manager, the published specs for the model that I have per my purchase receipt, or use a program that determines what hardware I have (a program like PC ID.  I think that's what it's called)? All of these numbered "items" are basically questions, even if they are not worded exactly that way.1) Audio driver: According t... I have had a hard time this week with my computer and have reached my wits end.

Firstly, my computer was just restarting @ the windows boot screen.

I replaced the PSU , same issue (300w --> 450w) still restarts during the windows boot screen.

I then reapplied thermal paste to the cpu and hsf , hoping it may have been a overheating problem, still restarting @ boot screen

Got out my spare (brand new) motherboard , hooked it all up.... now it gets further, ive started a new fresh install of windows and at first it would freeze around 52% on copying files. After a few restarts it managed to get to the actual installation now it bombs out on 36mins remaining.

I have also tried : Ubuntu install disk, and Ubuntu Live disc, both freeze.
any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I am going to build a new Rig soon but I am unsure which Vista edition to buy. Currently, I've been thinking of getting the Vista Ultimate Edition Retail because it has all the features that I need. I could get either Premium RETAIL or Business RETAIL for a cheaper price but these two editions have features that I want but the other version does not have. Vista Ultimate has all the features but I want to save money and get the OEM instead of the RETAIL which is way to expensive.

My question is, if I buy a Vista Ultimate Edition OEM, will I be able to reinstalled whenever I preform a reformat for a new clean install without the hassle of having to validate it every time?

What if I decide to replace my motherboard, I will have to do another clean install on my computer but if my guess is right, it will be "a different" computer even though only the MOBO was replaced.

What if I decide to add another BFG 8800 GTX for SLI (for whenever CRYSIS comes out), will I have problems with Vista then as well? One 8800 GTX might not be able to handle CRYSIS.

I would really hate to have to re-register my copy just because I decided to reformat my computer or decide to add/replace a part in it having Microsoft think that its a "Different" computer just because of an OEM OS. Or even worse, that the OS OEM software I have will be unusable because it will be installed on "Another" Comptuer.

Another problem I have I'd like to plug in here since I did no... Read more

Answer:Vista Operating System OEM Install

There are a bunch of these types of threads around here. Just scrolling or reading back through the topics for the past 3 months can teach you a lot and prevent these types of threads from being created almost every single day.

With that said, when you purchase and OEM/System Builder version of Vista it's tied to the hardware you first install it and activate it on. That's it, one time, one install. The only way to get another key for proper installation and proper activation will be to get one from Microsoft, and when you call in to do that you're calling for one of two reasons:

1) A real hardware problem like a fried motherboard is requiring you to reinstall clean on new hardware.

2) You're a hardcore geek just looking to upgrade again and that means you're going to have to lie about #1 above to get a key.

Microsoft won't just toss you a new key because you feel like getting a new mobo, faster processor, upgraded video card, etc.

The only legitimate reason to get a new key for an OEM/System Builder version is because of some mishap that is requiring you to do a massive swap of hardware - and this specifically means the mobo. Just doing a video card upgrade won't require it although some people seem to think it will. Nor RAM, nor a hard drive (if you do a proper drive-to-drive copy and keep the current installation valid), nor any other piece of hardware.

But if the mobo fries, that's basically Microsoft's only acceptable re... Read more

I formatted the hard drive and tried to boot up on the DVD but got the message, "NTLDR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. I restarted and pressed the F2 key which it said to do to enter setup because I wanted to be sure it was booting up on the DVD drive but it would not enter setup. The same message came up on the screen. What must I do to be able to reinstall the files from the DVD?

Hi ALL, it?s great to know there is a place to get help?. I hope I?ve just bought a B540 from a friend. I?ve checked on this site as he said it?s still under warranty, and the serial confirms it. I don?t quite know if it applies to my problem and a way to somehow get it up and running again, so maybe/hopefully someone could help me ? So as said, I?ve just got my B540 and believe it or not, the hard disk has screwed up, while up-grading to windows 8. It basically tries to recover the windows operating system over and over again. I?ve opened a Dos windows and tried to look at the Hard drive but can?t see anything on it, all I can see is Drive X which looks like a temp directory windows makes to install. Every time I try to recover windows 7 or 8 it simply starts, then says there?s a problem so windows has to recover ! Then goes into recovery mode and loops over and over again ? Can someone advise on what I?ve done and find a way to bring her back to life?.  PLEASE

Answer:B540 can't install any operating system ?

how are you viewing the info if windows has crashed and is on a loop? try popping in the windows 8 dvd/usb and go through the setup again if you can if not what does it say

We just built a computer and have 2 hard drives. What we are wondering is if we can install the windows 7 operating system on the 60gb drive, but have the some of the system files on the other drive like the program files and maybe even the documents and settings files. Is this possible?

somebody can help me to install the last version of bios driver without operating system in my dell precision T3600?
For exemple where can I find the file of the driver and not the executable application and if I find it, where must I copy in my pc?
thanks

Answer:Install bios driver without operating system

Hi dubjulie,
I suggest you to download Latest BIOS software to a bootable USB device. Firstly Connect the USB device after restarting the computer while tapping F12 key. This gives you boot options from which you need to select USB device. You should see the BIOS software which has already been copied to the USB driver. Select the file and start the application. Ii recommend you to connect the AC adaptor while flashing BIOS. Restart your once this process is complete.
Follow the steps mentioned below:
1.Download  the file: T3600A04.exe (5MB) to USB drive
2.Boot from the USB to the DOS prompt.
3. Run the file by typing T3600A04.exe (where y is the drive letter where the executable is located).
Please revert for any further queries and I would be glad to help you further

Hi

I am new to this forum so sorry if I post anything dodgy. I will also try to be as clear as I can

I have recently come into the possession of a Dell Dimension 3000 as it is a friends who is wanting some help.

When I received the desktop I found that they had been using Wintenals ERD 2005 as there OS. I therefore started by trying to install windows xp on the HDD. When I did so the initial setup went fine until it asks me to partition my HDD as the format is not accepted for windows xp. However when I put in an amount to partition the hard drive the screen just reverts back to the screen showing the unpartitioned space. This is the same for any number that I enter.
I then decided to try ubuntu seeing as it is free and is relatively easy to install. however when I tried this it comes up with an error saying that it is unable to create the ext4 partition #1 or something (sorry I will try and get the exact statement)

I am not sure if the issue is me being stupid or if the hard drive is dead or something weird but if any of you lovely people could help then I would greatly appreciate it

Hello All, I am a newbie here and I would like to say thank you in advance to all you great people who provide such terrific support!

I have a Compaq Presario Media Center SR1834NX Desktop PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Ver. 5.1.2715.3011 (xpsp(wmbla).061009-1511 Update Rollup 2.

I am suddenly missing items in the start menu, ie., accessories is missing entries such as under system tools it's blank and many other start up items. Also I am missing some control panel items. What I think has happened is the operating system has had some files erased or corrupted. There are just so many things missing that used to be listed makes me believe that is whats wrong.

How can I restore the original operating system or repair it without losing all of my current data and programs?

No cd's were shipped with my computer but there was directions for making a compaq cd/dvd recovery set
I made dvd recovery disks when the computer was new and I believe there are also recovery files on the secret partition, but I do not want to do a full restore with formatting the drive etc. I just want to repair the operating system if possible.

I tried doing several system restore points, but it does not replace what is missing.

am thinking of trying to buy a copy of windows 98se cd+license and product code.will try to buy on ebay.the dillema is would it be legal to install and use such a system.its actually for a friend who is totaly cheesed of with windows millenium edition, but can not afford to upgrade to xp.

Answer:is it legal to install 2nd hand operating system

theres nothing illegal about it so long as the previous owner has uninstalled it. If you buy a genuine Disk with a genuine number in good faith then there is probably no cause foryou to be concerned. Windows Xp throws up a problem that you wont have to worry about as there is no on-line activation with 98 so it will work even if the seller has been a little naughty. this is not an incitement to do bad things but Microsoft are hardly going to come after a lone home user for a infringement of the rules of a legacy OS.
