Putting PC Into Standby Mode

Question: Putting PC Into Standby Mode

Trying to put my parents' PC into Standby mode but the only thing that was closing down was the monitor. What am I doing wrong? Is it okay to leave the PC on Standby all day and then turn off the PC at night?Could someone please tell me the difference between Standby and Hibernate - in very simple terms - and how do you set it up to Hibernaye?

Preferred Solution: Putting PC Into Standby Mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Putting PC Into Standby Mode

Standby continues to supply power to RAM and certain other system components with the aim of keeping your Windows session in memory. It powers up quickly.Hibernation saves the contents of RAM to a portion of the HDD with some appended data, then shuts down everything completely. To all intents and purposes, it is the same as a shutdown, bar the fact that Windows cannot perform the tasks that it normally performs at shutdown. It boots up quite quickly.

Hi
First of all, I post this thread here because I don' think It's any software installed that caused the problem
at least I thought so.

I tried to put my PC on standby.

but it seems that every time I put my com to standby mode I can't get it back in running.
I can hear the PC fan running not hard drive when I push the power button. my monitor is on but I see nothing.
I can't turn it on with my mouse or keyboard

I cannot tell when this happened s this is the first time I tried to go on standby made

I believe that this is a problem with the configuration of my bios. I checked my hardware to see if they support standby modes but I believe that they are all Okay.

I Don't know if the information is useful but I'll just tell you all

Im using Windows XP sp2
pentium D 3.6ghz
kingstone DDR 2x 512mb RAM
MSI Motherboard 945PLNeoNvidia GF 7600gs

thanks

I just built a new computer for my girlfriends father. I thought I had all the bugs out of it until I took it over there. Found out his printer didn't have drivers for XP on the disk and that when I put it into standby the computer would go into standby (I thinnk) But as soon as I moved the mouse for it to wake up I would see a Blue screen of death and then suddenly it would reboot. When it would restart it gives me the error message and then lists two files, the minidump file and the sysdata.xml I found the printer drivers online but have yet to find an answer about the standby problem. Any Thoughts?

So starting I think yesterday or so, whenever I put my computer on standby mode, it shuts down. When I turn it back on, I get a windows has shutdown improperly message and the thing says Blue Screen.
I standby by closing my lid so I tried pressing the standby button once and turning it on and that didn't seem to have any problems.

I read some of the forum threads and tried to analyze the debug myself and the error is the same, and still is: NT Kernel & System. The ntoskrnl.exe file seems to be causing it. So I restored important Windows files using Samsung Recovery Solution 5. But the problem is still there.
(Is the only solution reinstalling my OS?)

2 days ago my Dell started to mess up. It's only a couple years old, but it won't turn on. I put it on standby a couple days ago, and when I woke the next morning, all it does is flash orange (or amber) rather the turn green and power up. I tried messing with the insides and sercuring cables, but I don't even hear the fan blowing, so I have no idea whats wrong.

It would be great if you could help. i'm desperate here.

I have a T60 running Win XP SP2. Recently, I had a motherboard and fan replaced by a Lenovo technician to correct my heat problem. Ever since then, every time I try to resume the computer after it had been in standby mode, a few minutes later, the computer returns to sleep. I tried reinstalling windows but it did not solve the problem. Instead now, a message pops up saying it is safe to remove the CD drive then goes back to standby.  THis happens in a constant loop, but the problem goes away if I avoid the standby mode and poweroff/on instead. Anyone have an idea what the problem is? So far, I tried updating video drivers and BIOS but has not solved the problem.

I tried using standby mode after reading about it in this forum. My computer is useless after waking up. I can't even close xp pro. I even have to use the computer power button to shut down windows. My harddrive light stays on all the time as well. My browser never opens, and after 5 minutes of waiting, I finally decide to shutdown and it can't. Is there something I need to know in order for standby to work. I have already looked at the bios but see nothing to change. I am afraid to try hybernate. Is this a software or hardware problem?
Life is good without using standby mode.

Answer:Standby Mode-- Can't Open Applications After Using Standby

Good question: The one and only time I tried THAT function, I had to unplug the computer from the electrical source in order to get the monster to work! I've refused to use it since. Hibernate isn't quite as bad, but I find I always have to do a full shut down to get my computer to work anyway, possibly because I use log-in accounts - I don't know. These days, I either leave it on, or do a full shut down .Orange Blossom

Any suggestions??

Answer:Portege 4010: No Standby Mode and Hibernate Mode

Hello,

go under the Desktop -> Rightclick -> Screensaver -> Power Management.

There you can activate Hibernation and i think there must be a point were you can enable Standby (may be it's helpful if you install your Toshiba Tools).

I can't use Hibernation mode and also Standby mode! After switching to those modes my notebook shows blue screen with message "Preparing for Hibernation/Standby mode..." and... there is nothing after this message just like comp is hanging-up. Please advise me somebody what can I do with this.

Answer:I cannot use Hibernation mode/Standby mode on my Satellite

Why you don?t post more details??? ?:|
I don?t understand users who post something but without any information?s about the notebook, which OS was preinstalled, manually or recovery CD, what was done on the notebook, etc? X-(

Sorry for this comment but I hope you can understand my point of view.
However, do you use the OS from Toshiba recovery CD?

Usually if the Toshiba Power saver was installed on the notebook so this utility controls the hibernation and standby mode.
But as I have mentioned above, the OS from the Recovery CD should works. If you have installed it manually so possibly there is something missing.

Answer:i need help from somebody, regarding putting windows xp (2005) in MS-DOS mode

Windows XP doesn't use DOS.If you want a fresh start, you have two options:1. Use Windows XP CD for clean install2. Use Recovery CD to bring the computer to its original state.NOTE. In both cases, all personal data, and installed programs will be lost.

I recently purchased a Sony Bravia XBR55X900E tv and I connect my pc to it via HDMI.  Here's is my setup:

Dell XPS 8700 connects to HDMI 2 on Sony TV.
My TV receiver connects to HDMI 1 on Sony TV.
My Sony AVR connects to HDMI 3 on Sony TV, strictly for audio purposes (ARC).
Logitech Harmony one universal remote.

My issue is this:  Whenever I switch between activites (example PC to watching TV), after the TV switches to HDMI 1 from HDMI 2, this puts my Dell into sleep / standby mode.  If I press the power button, it lights up like normal.  If I go back to the PC activity, again once the TV switches from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2, the computer again goes into this "sleep" mode and I again have to press the power button to take it out of it.
All of my pc settings are set to NEVER with respect to monitor or PC going to sleep / standby mode.  Prior to this TV I had my pc connected to an older plasma TV and this never happened.
I contacted Sony to see if it something with their Bravia sync but the person said that everything looked good from the TV's end.
I'm hoping that someone has come across this and can steer me in the right direction as it is really frustrating and I don't know what else to try.

I just got a brand new laptop with Windows Hello. It's very useful for logging in, but my laptop now goes to sleep every time I leave my desk. The red light next to the infrared camera blinks often when I'm using my laptop (which is also pretty annoying), and then if I get up, even for a few minutes (to grab a snack, notebook, etc.) my laptop goes to sleep. I'm pretty computer illiterate, but I suspect that the camera is still looking for me while I'm using my computer and then decides my laptop needs to sleep when it doesn't see my face anymore. Is there any way to change this? I like not having to use a password, but the red light and going to sleep is annoying, especially since I tend to get up from my desk a lot just to stretch. It also seems like having the camera on all the time would drain the battery pretty quickly. Am I way off base here?

Page 44 of the online manual tells how to use menu and settings dial and in that section once you learn the menu and settings dial you will find the night mode setting some where in there. I think you just need to see what the different settings are when you turn that dial to find it.

On my old VISTA laptop, when I put my computer in sleep mode and then woke it up, I could always view my connected MP3 player and its files.

When I do the same with my new notebook, I have to unplug and re-plug the usb connector in order to view the mp3 files.

I tried fixing by going into device manager, power management for the USB hubs, and unchecking the "allow this computer to turn off..." setting.

I alsodisabled this:

If you disable USB Selective Suspending and uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power', your MP3 shouldn't have any problems. Perhaps double check witch device you unchecked.

I received an Arris TG862 modem from Time Warner Cable quite some time ago and have generally avoided it until now. I had always assumed that the TG862 was already in bridge mode and that I was only using my NetGear R6300 router for wireless, firewall etc. Recently, I was trying to open ports through my R6300, but no matter what they would always remain closed.

Sometime later, I realized that my Arris modem was most likely to blame, so I turned off both its firewall and wireless and switched it over to bridge mode. After restarting the modem, I am unable to connect to the internet. I can still connect to both my router and my modem's login page via the cord that goes from my modem -> router -> computer, but my router is not getting anything. I tried restarting my router as well, but that does not seem to help my situation. In my router's login page, it clearly tells me that the router is receiving no internet from the modem.

For now, I've factory reset'd the modem and the internet connection is fine but I still need to put the modem in bridge mode.

Thanks!

recently i costom built my computer around the time vista was released, its been working smothly on my comp untill a weeek ago it all went wrong and crashed, to be on the safe side i rebooted in safe mode, after then again reboooting it and putting all my settings back to the way they where i thought that it was all over untill recently i noticed little thigs like video's on u tube or any other site not working, aswell as sertain links on a page would not open. this personaly has confussed me! im kinda stuck on how to get it to go back to wat it used to be like before i went into safe mode, please help me!!!!!!!!!!

thanx!!!! yours greatfully Elan2jay!!

Answer:after putting vista into safe mode it will no longer opn java script or flash players

Unless you actually made some changes to the configuration, things should have returned to normal once you rebooted from Safe Mode.

Vista's "System Restore" would probably be the quickest fix for this and you will lose nothing by doing it.

However if you are using Internet Explorer, you might want to go to Tools > Add-Ons and make sure that all the Adobe Flash stuff there is present and enabled.

Also in Internet Options > Security Settings > Custom you can reset all settings there to their defaults.

Finally if you are using a 3rd party firewall -- some of these scripts can be blocked by their configurations.

My T61 from time to time will go into standby mode, on its own, sometimes while I am in the middle of typing something.  The power management options are set never to go into standby while on power (not that this is relevant considering it's not even idle when it happens!). I did uninstall Power Manager and Power Management and reinstall, and this fixed the problem for a while, then I had to get a new disk, and it started happening with the new disk/installation too.  Unfortunately this time reinstalling Power Manager and Power Management did NOT fix the issue. Any ideas?

Question: Standby mode

I use standby mode quite often as a way of quickly restarting my machine during the day, whilst its not in use.

Normally when i select the standby option from within the XP home environment, my monitor turns off, my hard disk shuts down and then my fans go silent.

As of this morning, my fans will not shut down in standby mode. Everything else is as normal, and i can re awaken the machine as normal by pressing any key, yet during the whole time the fans continue to run.

Is there a power management setting that could have been reset? Or maybe something in the bios thats got effected somehow?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Yes. Standby usually powers off the keyboard, hence you have to hit a physical button. You usually hit Standby or Power to wake them again.

Question: standby mode

How long can you have your computer in standby mode? I would like it for a day at a time. I am having a start problem with I guess the power usage, It sometimes come on, then shuts off after 3 or 4 seconds. Sometimes only once, but sometimes more than once. Cannot afford right now to get it fixed or to buy something, so maybe if I can keep it in standby it would not use the initial startup surge of power. Also, I though my mouse would take the system out of standby but it don't. I have to use the power button on the computer, (even though the mouse information says to use this device to take the computer out of standby, it is checked. Are there other areas that I should check to see if something is marked wrong for using the mouse to take the system out of standby? I have an optical mouse incase its needed to know.

Answer:standby mode

May I suggest using the PC's Hibernation mode...

Instead of clicking Stand By, then you click Start > Shut Down, on this screen hold down the Shift key and Stand By will change to Hibernate. The click Hibernate.

You can turn the PC off at the wall, move the unit and when you plug all back and hit the power button, All is restored as you left. Works the same as Stand By but powers off the machine.

If Hibernate is not available when you hold the shift key down, you need to activate this feature from here.

Press Start > Control Panel > Power Options > Click the Hibernate Tab > Click Enable Hibernation and click OK. Then follow the steps above.

Hope this is a better solution for you.

Every once and a while my computer seems to forgets to use the standby settings I have set up in my power options. If I defrag the disc or change the mode to never for awhile and then reset my options it works for a few weeks, then I'm doing it all over. Anyone have any ideas?

Question: Standby mode

I just built a new pc and having trouble with the stand by mode. From my past Dell Dimension system, whenever going into standby mode, the whole system seems like it turns off. The fans and everything. However, now when I enable standby, the harddriver turns off but all the lights and all the fans are still running. How do I configure it to make everything turn off when I go into standby including the fans, lights and etc?

Answer:Standby mode

You might be thinking of hibernate mode, where the computer essentially shuts down, fans and all, but comes up very quickly without needing to reboot. Standby is a little different. The computer still runs but it shuts down a lot of power hogging devices, which sounds like what you're describing. You can set which action your computer takes when you press the power button. The selection is located under power options in the control panel.

My standby mode option is deactivated. I want to use that option because it's taking a very long time to boot everytime I shutdown my computer. please help.

Answer:I want to use standby mode but I can't

This is probably not the answer you want to hear, but standby will lead to more issues that it is worth.

Accept the reboot time - you'll be better off.

However, to try to enable it ... Go to the Power applet in the Control Panel. Check the settings there.

I have a computer that doesn't seem to be able to go/stay in standby mode with the wake-on-lan (wol) feature enabled in bios. From my research, it is my understanding that only a 'magic packet' could wake a computer from standby mode. I have a wireless router with a 3rd party firmware on it.

1. Could the router be constantly sending this 'magic packet' (or other packets)that keeps waking up the computer?
2. If the router isn't doing it, can other computers on the network be sending packets that are waking up the computer?

Basically, I want to be able to keep this computer connected to the router and also have it be able to enter standby mode.

Any suggestions?

Question: No Standby Mode

Hello All,
Thank goodness for this forum..I enjoy it SO much ! I'm trying to find an answer for a friend of mine that recently upgraded his computer from windows 98 se to windows xp prof. . One problem I can't seem to solve for him is that I can't get his system to go into standby mode. I receive this error:
On a computer that has an ATI Rage Pro accelerated graphics port (AGP) 2X video adapter installed, when you attempt to put the computer into Standby mode, you may receive the following error message:

The device driver for the "ATI Technologies, Inc. 3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X" device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver. This behavior occurs because Windows XP does not provide power management support for this video adapter.

I've already updated his driver to this one: Windows XP Display Driver version 5.10.2600.6010
And I still receive the same message..I'm really wondering if it's something else causing it. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Thanks SO much !!

Hi:i haven't been able to get my computer (running windows xp home) to go into standby mode for some time. I gave up trying. As far as i can tell, the problem may have started when i loaded Zone Alarm's firewall on my computer. I'm not exactly sure this is the cause, but i can't go into standby now. Hi,
I had a "Standby" mode in win XP, which cause the PC to turn off (except the memory ).
It was turned on when I clicked the mouse and gave me the last state I had.
Now , I have only "Hibernate" and it executes Hibernate and not standby.
Anyone knows what to do ?

Hello Isotoper, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm not real sure of what you mean, but you can change your Power Plan Settings to use "Sleep" (standby) instead of "Hibernate". This tutorial can help show you how to. You might also look at the related links at the top of the tutorial if this isn't exactly what you were looking for.

Is the "standby mode" you are referring to "sleep" ?

Reset the power setting options; see if it helps -
START | type power | select "edit power plan" | "restore defaults"

Question: Standby Mode

I have a HP pavilion 1640a processor.

When we put it “sleep mode” either by pressing the sleep button on the top of the keyboard, or selecting “START/TURN OFF COMPUTER/STANDBY”, the computer screen switches to a blue screen with words “preparing to standby”.

It remains in this frozen state, with no other action able to be performed, and the only thing we can do is manually turn the power off and reboot.

If the computer has been idle for 15 minutes or so, it also enters this frozen state with same blue screen “preparing to standby”.

How can we over come this to ensure the sleep or standby mode is properly operable?

Answer:Standby Mode

Just quit using sleep and hybernate. It causes a lot of problems and a lot of computers.

I just tried using "standby" on my desktop. In doing so, the monitor goes blank and it seems the drives spin down, but my power supply is still on and the fan still spinning. Is this suppose to happen. I thought the PS should shut down and provide just minimal power....or is that hibernation mode?

What your looking for is S3 power management. It has to be set in the bios when XP is installed. It cannot be set after installing XP without reinstalling.

I've got a Toshiba Laptop that had to be flat lined and reloaded. It was a bear as I had to learn to make ISO boot disks since this has no floppy to get the process started via the easy route... you know, put in the Windows XP disk and boot from there. That was loads of fun but I got it done BUT... for some reason I do NOT have the option to use nor enable Standby or Hibernation.

I've Run the system scan, put in the XP disk... twice now... nope didn't do it. Yes I have service pack 2 installed. Even re-installed it... nothing.

I've been to Tosiba's site and searched high and low and found their Power Management program which was way cool BEFORE when it worked but after installing it I was denied access to it and I'm the administrator! Never got around that so took it back out.

Yep.. APCI or whatever is in there too. I can go everywhere where you'd normally go to turn the stuff on and set it up but it's not even an option! Even the "enable Hibernation" bit is gone... nowhere to be found.

I have one option... shut it off. And if I get frustrated and hold the power button down to shut it off... when it's down I close the lid and it boots back up!

I've tried everything I can think of. I've searched high and low for a resolution before posting this. This is a last resort. The ONLY thing that was different from this install than from the other's I've done sucessfully with the same disk is Smart Drive wasn't installed so I loaded it the long route. I did th... what really confuses me is that i did not have this problem in the past and have not made any changes that afaik would cause a problem -- added a dvd-burner, removed floppy drive.

Hi james and Welcome to TSF

How are you installing XP? Restore disc or reformatting and doing a fresh install?
Are you installing all your Critical Updates and Service Packs also? I'm thinking SP2 may not be compatible with your video card.

I ran into a problem just the other day. I reformatted and installed XP. The machine was very unstable, was in a reboot loop. I came to realize it was the video card. The disc came with SP2 so I then had to wipe it and reinstall from another disc with out SP2 and do the updates manually. I mistakenly installed the updates for the video card and bam I was back in the same boat. Had to remove the update in Safe Mode.

Try not updating the video from the windows update site.

Every once in a while, my computer randomly goes into standby mode. It could happen immediately after going from the log in screen to my desktop, or an hour after booting. Once my computer goes into standby mode and cannot be taken out. If I restart I can usually get back to the desk top.

My computer has been running strong for the past year, have had zero issues with hardware/software. I am somewhat savvy and I keep Windows clean and running smoothly with constant reformatting etc...

My power saving mode is set to high performance and my desktop should not be entering standby mode at any time unless I manually put it to sleep.

Answer:Standby mode randomly and on its own

Most often when we see this, it is a power supply issue. You described everything else, but not the power supply... The system you describe is a power-hungry unit.
It is not the power rating of the Power Supply, it is the quality.
There are a great number of other issues that can cause the problem, but most require some time on the bench with a good technician to track down the cost... whether a simple install change, or a part replacement.

I recently installed the program nircmd and have been using it to standby and unknowingly hibernate my comp. I noticed that after using this software my CPU fan would turn off during standby. When I would resume from standby my comp would sometimes freeze and BSOD. I felt the CPU heatsink after standby and it was boiling hot.I think that this program is the culprit, but I'm not sure. I think somehow my standby mode was changed, but my BIOS doesn't have any power options. I have tried power options in windows also with no luck. Can any one tell me how I can change these modes so that my CPU doesn't overheat during standby?

Answer:Standby mode causes CPU to overheat

This might be a silly question, but why not just use the Windows hibernate/sleep modes?Your CPU fan should turn off in standby, but it sounds like your CPU is still working which isn't right. What motherboard do you have?

When I turned it back on it went directly to sleep mode with out anything popping up on the screen, the power button just flashed as usual. So I turned off once more, but this time I unplugged it from the power supply after it was off. I waited for a few seconds, plugged it back in and still nothing came up on the screen. I recently acquired a new ThinkPad T61 (2.2GHz, 2GB, 14.4" screen,  Win XP-pro etc.) and have found that even with a fully charged battery, the standby life is not more than 2-days. Is this normal? My previous T21 and A21P would go -and still do go - for 2-3 weeks on Standby.

Answer:Standby Mode: How long will it last?

So, with all these people on this furum with T61's, can no none tell me how long a T61 can typically last on Standby, starting with a charged battery??I get 2-days at most. Is this about right?

P4, Sata disk, Intel MB, XP-Home-SP2.
The computer has the option of going into standby mode (shuts down disks, processor, cooling fans, etc) after a predefined period of inactivity. I had set it for 10 minutes. On reactivation, the computer is restored to the status prior to standby, i.e. programs, files etc all as before.

A technician advised that this is not a good idea-that the computer should be allowed to run most of the time it is in use and only shut down when not to be used for a period of time e.g. at night when finished for the day, and then it should be completely shut down.

My question is whether routine of standby mode is healthy for the computer or whether the repeated startups are harmful to the disk, processor MB, etc.

As I intuitively like the idea of a system not working when not needed, I would like to hear other people's opinions as well.

Thanks

Recently I had a power outage in my dorm. My computer was on standby mode when it happened. The computer booted normally when the power came back and it ran fine. Then I put the computer in standby mode again because I had to go somewhere. I come back and resume from standby and instead of normally booting to the windows password log on screen, the computer restarts.

Also, the LED light on my case that normally blinks on and off during standby, blinks briefly for the first few seconds and then disappears. This never happened before.

I have tried rebooting and shutting down the computer, but every time I go to standby and resume from standby, it restarts and then goes the windows log on screen.

I have no idea what is going on. This problem did not happen before the power outage.
