Preferred Solution: dell laptop formated harddrive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i have just removed vista and put my old copy of xp back on . while the computor was running vista i bought and formated a 2nd hardrive and saved all my files to this drive. upon installing xp i found xp will not reconize this drive so to backed up my files i had to re install vista and transfer files to a xp formated drive then re install xp. i have saved all my files but i have a 320gig hardrive that i cant use. is there any way to make xp format this drive so i can use it. its a sata and all drivers are good to go. thanyou for any help.

Answer:xp will not reconise vista formated harddrive

If you go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management do you see the drive? If it is free or unallocated space you can right click on it and select format to format the drive. This will erase all data on the drive. Then you should be able to use the drive.

Hi, Wonder if anyone can help me on this one.

I have a Computer with XP on but want to run a duel boot with Vista on another drive.

I have another drive to put into my computer but it was formatted under linux and i understand that it will require reformatting to take a windows OS, how do i do this?

I have no linux system and don't have a linux boot disk so if i need one of these can you please post a link, I also have no knowledge of Linux.

While I'm on here can anyone give me any advise I want to run both XP and Vista on separate drives, I'm looking to familiarize myself with Vista before moving my whole system to it, so I can check the driver compatibility and other issues I may have. Is there going to be any problems I should know about it terms of running them both.

Thanks in Advance.

Answer:Formatting a harddrive for Windows XP that is already Formated for Linux

I'm Not positive about linux but i have used the partition utillity alot.
*i would back up your system first*
so here's what you do to reformat ur harddrive ...

logon to your computer and go to my comuter right click on the XP boot and click "rename"
and set it to "XP drive" right click on the drive you want your new xp to boot from and set the name to "reformatme". (we do this so there is no confusion witch drive is witch.) insert your xp cd in the drive and restart your computer. now when your computer is booting wait for text to come up saying "press any key to boot from CD" press any key on your key board. wait for the intro page prees enter, and agree to the Terms then follow the wizerd till you get to a page that shows you what OSes are allredy installed press Esc
now you should see a list of partitions. Look for the drive that says "reformatme" and in the sub area under that there should be a partion that says "unknowen format" You will losse all data when you do whats next... Press "D" then "enter" then "L" now press enter on "raw" and select the file system you want and Setup will take you from there!

I bought a brand new Acer Aspire xc600 today and it had win8 installed. First thing me and my husband did was to try to install win7 (as we dislike win8 for many reasons)... When it didnt work with just putting in the cd and install, we (stupidly without making recovery discs as we thought we would never need it) formated the drive and made it completely clean before installing win7 (which works now). This means we have no win8 recovery disc or E-recovery management program and therefor cant do factory reset and return this piece of crap pc... (We play world of warcraft and my 7year old pc has only been updated once when it comes to graphic card to geforce 9800 and still perform better outside the game).

The performance test of the whole system give the graphics a lousy 5.0 which is worse than my husbands 3yr old graphic card as well! Only numbers that have increased is the RAM and CPU.

I feel disappointed as the graphics card should be better than mine or my husbands and have better performance even if its the "laptop sized card".

So to the issue, is there a way we could restore/reinstall the computer to factory settings with win8 and Acers drivers as it was when we started it up earlier today???

Please help me,

Answer:No recovery disc made and formated harddrive

Or maybe someone can explain how to improve the quality and performance, we turned of aero and tried to optimize it but nothing seems to help really... The desktop looks somewhat grainy and not really clean and neat as with my very much older PC.

Just to say thanks for the answer to my previous question but here's a new one:

My Dell laptop just died. I am computer illiterate so all I know is how to get the harddrive out of my dead laptop. The reason I need it is that I did not backup my info so I need to transfer it to the new laptop. I am not sure if I am supposed to take out the harddrive on the new laptop and replace it with this old one so that I can back up the data and then switch the harddrives. Or hopefully if there is a way that I can back up my older harddrive externally without having to put it inside my laptop?

Answer:Dell laptop harddrive...can I use it externally to another laptop?

Since it won't boot in a different machine, putting in the other laptop won't do you any good. Look for an external case with a USB connection so you can use it is an external backup drive after you empty it.

Hey guys,

I'm really stuck: I bought a brand new Dell Inspiron 8600 not even 3 months ago and lately i've been having these weird problems.

ever since i started using the computer, the HDD used to kick in at some point, you could hear it acelerate normally. i figured it is because it is an 80 GB one that sometimes just needs to spin some more.

recently, however, it makes really strange and load cracking noises all of a sudden...and my applications run slow when it does that, sometimes even pause. like the HDD ist lost and doesn't know where it's reading stuff from. 2 days ago, windows xp just shut down in a situation like this, i got a blue screen telling me to switch of caching and shadowing in bios (which i didn't find in there) and then it said : dumping physical memory.

this has happened again twice just today. i really don't know what's going on...i didn't install any new hardware or software, as the blue screen suggests.

do you have any ideas? Thanks for your help!!!

Oh, i should say: could it be that it's simpy due to the fact that my computer has been running a lot lately? that it's maybe overheating or something like that? before the errors today, i kept it running for about 3 days now...

Answer:Harddrive noisy, stops and crashes in Dell Laptop

if it is only 3 months old why not contact Dell? I have a dell as well and any time I had problems they fixed it free. It will take some effort on your part by contacting dell (use the phone you will get better results) and explaining your problem. They have replaced a dvd rom drive, cables and countless software errors for me, for free.

I have 1.84 GB in photos (over 4,700 photos) of my kids on my Dell Computer (operating system: Win XP 2002) and want to back them up. My Dell Computer previously crashed and it cost me $1,200 to have my old harddrive read. I'm concerned about again losing my kids photos.

I have a zip drive on my Dell computer, but that's not gonna work as I would need too many zip disks to accomplish my task. I may be open to removing the zip disk from my Dell computer and installing a second harddrive (but I'm not sure if that will work or whether it can be done easily). I also own a Gatewate Solo laptop that I bought in 1998 and is operating on win 98. In the old days, there was a program called Laplink that could mount a second computer hardrive onto a first computer harddrive. I don't know whether this would work. As a third option, I do own PC relocator, but the only options it allows is to transfer all files from one computer to another and I don't think my old Gatewate Solo laptop could take all the data from my Dell Computer.

I would prefer connecting my Gateway Solo laptop harddrive (win 98) to my Dell Computer (win XP 2002). That way, i could connect to the internet through my Dell Computer and update my Gateway Solo laptop with the latest software as well as copy my 1.84 GB in photos to my Gateway Solo laptop.

In summary, my three options appear to be
1. Remove Zipdisk and install second harddrive in Dell Computer
2. Try ... Read more

Re: Want to mount Gatewate Solo laptop harddrive (win 98) onto Dell Computer (WIN xp

Have you thought about backing up your photos on a DVD data disc? They can hold around 4 gigs of information and you can make as many backup copies as you want. If you have a home network, or know someone with a home network, you can hook both computers up to it and send your photos to the laptop. Or you could buy an external hard drive. Just some things to consider.

I have an HP Pavilion dv6-3190ee and since i bought my laptop i had the original windows 7 Home Premium x64 installed and the sticker is on the back of my laptop.

Yesterday I had to format my laptop because I have been infected by a virus.

As I don't have a Windows 7 DVD so I downloaded a copy of windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

When i was installing the windows asked me for my product key, I entered they key I have on the back of my laptop.

After installation is done, I "right click" on my computer>>properties and I see in the bottom of the window saying that i have a trial time until I activate my windows !!!

Why my key didn't work and do I have now to buy a new Windows 7 license ?? or is there anything i can do to have back the original key i had on my laptop!!

Thank you

Answer:Why my original key isn't wokring when I formated my laptop !!!!

Hello Anthos, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, use the tutorial below to re-enter the product key number. Be sure to double check that you have entered each character from the product key correctly.

It's not hard to mistake an 6 for a G or O for a 0 for example.

I formatted my IBM 760ed ThinkPad laptop and since i can only put in one drive at a time, i.e. cd, floppy, etc. when I use the Windows 98 start up disk it does not load the rom drivers because the cd rom is not present. I tried sys c: to copy systems on the hard drive, turned the machine off, change from floppy to cd rom, turned it back on and it still does not recognize cd rom. How do I get this machine to recognize the cd rom so that I can load Windows? Please help, my daughter needs this for college!

Howdy there rebus and WELCOME TO TEAM TSG !!!

I don't know how much that I can help you ( at least this will give you a bump up ) but have you tried to make the first boot device in the BIOS, the Floppy or CD-ROM, then put in the CD-ROM drive and try to boot from the CD ??

Or...

If you have the BOOT Floppy that came with the laptop, try coping the entire contents of it to the C:\, then swap out the floppy for the CD-ROM, put the W98 Cd in the CD-ROM, and after the laptop boots and you get a C:\ prompt, try typing either...

A:\setup, or D:\setup,

Or A:\win98\setup, or D:\win98\setup...

And please remember, this all depends on how IBM has set up the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files on the boot floppy, if you can please post the contents of these files...

Are you getting a notification that Windows 10 is available for installation on your laptop? If so, what's the error that you're getting when you try to do the installation?
If you're not getting the notification, hang tight another day or so and see if it pops up. Make sure there aren't any other updates that you haven't installed yet.

I had my busted laptop for awhile now and I'm just dying to get it working again without having to pay for extra parts or a whole new laptop. It's a Vista OS (i know horrible choice right?) and it fell off my bed and my computer started to freeze up every so often so i went into command prompt and typed /format C: without realizing that the recovery disc would've been a better idea to use because it wont leave bad sectors. When I formated the laptop and tried to load the OS it would freeze up at 17% and would just stay like that. When I saw that there was still KB left on the hard drive I was a bit worried that the format didn't work properly so i formated again and it got rid of some items but it didn't get rid of it all. I was just wondering if there might be a solution as to fix an already formated hard drive using the command prompt to fix the bad sectors. Any information can be helpful. Thanks in advanced. Also i was wondering if there might be some solution as to hook the laptop hard drive to a tower hard drive and fixing the laptop hard drive on a desk top computer if that is a possible solution please be generous and give all the information you can.

Secondly, use GParted, to cleanly sweep it. See my quoted text in my sig.

Sounds like the hard drive maybe faulty......and yes can hook it up to a Desktop......if it is a newer laptop the data cable maybe Sata in which case if the other PC is a newer one the it will hook up OK.

The other solution is to get an Enclosure for the Hard drive with a USB connection like this

Answer:dell harddrive exchange

If you are both running Windows XP, I am not sure that you can legally do it because of the license agreement. But you could just add your sisters HD to yours (making it the slave) and then copy over anything you want and vice/versa. Unless you are wanting the bigger hard drive. As far as I know Dell are happy for you to add a second HD, in fact for my Dell they explain how to do it in the handbook, and I added the HD from my old computer.

Does anyone know if whether or not I can take the harddrive out of my Dell Inspiron 2650 and put it into another Dell and FORMAT it, install XP, and put it back into my laptop? I dont see why not but I want to ask first...

Thanks

Answer:Question about DELL INSPIRON Harddrive??

The drive is a common laptop drive. So technically it could go in any laptop or even a desktop.

You will run into a problem if you install XP, or any operating system, on it and then trasnfer it to another system. If the hardware is different you'll get errors, have to reinstall drivers, or it won't boot at all. If they are the same then you should be OK to do that, although don't activate XP until the drive is back in the system it belongs to.

Now for my question. Why do you need to do this?

if the gray/white screen is asking for harddisk password only then you can get the notebook to work with a new harddisk drive.
if it asks for the system or admin password you can go here:
http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic96268.html
and wait for password or contact dell (make sure you are the legal owner or have the ownership tranfered to you).
if the BIOS setup configuration (which allows you to change the settings in the bios) is disable post back. I can help you with that.

good luck!

So, I basically want a new hard drive to put in a laptop I got for free. I want to upgrade the hard drive to atleast 100 gigs. I have a few questions about this:

1. Is it possible to upgrade the harddrive in a Dell Latitude D505?
2. If so, are there only certain harddrives that are compatible with this laptop?
3. How easy is it to replace a hard drive in a laptop?

Answer:I want to buy a new harddrive for my Dell Latitude D505...

Hello,

It is possible to change the hard drive in your laptop, and it is straightforward to do. The service guide for your laptop will tell you how to replace the hard drive:

Dell Latitude D505 Service Manual: Replacing the Hard Drive

As for the type of hard drive, you'll need a 2.5" IDE (ATA/PATA) Hard Drive of any speed or capacity (ideally a speed of at least 5400 RPM). Here are some example products:

Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 160GB ATA-6 2.5in 5400RPM Mobile Hard Drive at ZipZoomfly

Hey guys I'm new to the boards...

I've owned this dell 2400 for about 4 years now and I currently have a 80 gig harddrive and I only have about 5 gigs left on space. I don't really want to delete anything and was wondering if its possible to install a 2nd harddrive on it.
I'm preferably looking for a 160 gig harddrive.

also what do i need? i heard that you need a windows xp boot disc or something...

can anybody tell me where i can get the most for my money? not looking to spend over $100

thanks in advance

Answer:Dell Dimension 2400 HARDDRIVE UPGRADE?

You can add a second drive, but you'll need to get a special bracket to hold the second drive. I've seen these brackets on ebay by third party companies for pretty cheap. You'd also need a new ide cable that supports 2 drives(the factory one only has one plug for 1 drive), but that's no big deal, only a few bucks. Almost any ide ata 100/133 drive(not sata) should be fine, you can install it as a slave drive and not have to install windows again if you just want extra storage space, or you could get an external hard drive if you're not the hardware upgrade type, like a western digital "mybook."

I have a 2006 Dell Inspiron 1525, with Pentium Dual T3400 2.16, 3G ram with vista SP2, everythings perfect, except its falling apart, litteraly, the screen is being held with tape after some drop and the thing is heavy. I bought a new $00 Acer 12 inch super fast windows 8 and but the annoyance it causes with the small screen and the windows 8 itself is too much.

Basically I found selling a used 1525 for $90, Dual Core 1,7 ghz, 2 Gig ram, 120 Gigs drive, basically almost same thing, but not EXACTLY (ram different, processors bit different). Can I take out my hard drive from my current dell, remove drive from the other, insert mine, and everything runs as smoothly with no errors whatsoever.

Hello everyone,
I have a Dell Dimension 2400 that has a hard drive that uses a gray cable to connect to the motherboard. I think that is an IDE ?  I am trying to find out if it is possible to connect a SATA hard drive to this motherboard.
I have a Dell Studio that simply refused to come on. I feel it is the motherboard, not the power switch, because things have, over the last little while, quit working. First the DVD drive would not work, then the external DVD drive that can be plugged in to a USB port would not work on the pc. I had a friend who had the very same Studio and the same thing happened to hers. She had someone look at hers and was told the motherboard had indeed gone bad. So I feel that the motherboard just breathed her last breath and died on me.  The SATA drive is in it. I have all my info on the drive backed up to about a month or so ago, so it is not a huge loss of data, but over the last week there are things on the drive that were not backed up yet that I would like to access and get off the drive.  I have no reason to believe that the hard drive is ruined in any way, and I would like to install it on my Dell Dimension 2400 just to get what I did not have backed up yet over the last week.
When I went to install the hard drive out of the Studio I found that it does not have a spot for the long gray cable on it.  So I need to know if I can still install this drive on the Dimension 2400. If so can someone tell me, or post a link to, ... Read more

Answer:Dell Dimension 2400 and SATA Harddrive

Okay, update... the little adapter came in today. It worked so far as connecting and everything. But Vista on the hard drive is 64 bit and the older pc I was wanting to put it in motherboard will not support 64 bit.   So yes, the little connectors do work as they are supposed to. But the motherboard would not support Vista 64 bit.  Oh well, I didn't spend a lot trying it and I discovered a docking system, so I just got one of those.

Thanks for everyones help!

Installed a dell harddrive on e-machine...E-1300.Is there a easy fix to re-activate windows XP? I have no back-up disc and it will not accept E-1300 validation key. I have tried to enter by phone but still not excepted. Thanks for the help........

Answer:E-1300 with dell harddrive cannot activate windows XP have n

Dell XP will not activate on an eMachines computer. OEM rules only allow the OS to work on the machine it was supplied with. You'll need to buy a retail CD, a generic OEM one, or an eMachines one. Alternatively, install one of the OpenSource OSs.

Apologies, I'm not very good with tech speak.

I had a single OEM Seagate Barracuda SATA harddrive that failed while playing Skyrim. I ran checkdisk and it reported 5 bad clusters. It said it couldn't repair an active partition unless I rebooted, which I did. The damage apparently kept the drive from booting.

Next I tried some things with Startup Repair, none of which were succesful as it reported that repair wasn't possible and system restore bluescreened after circumventing the American Megatrends BIOS screen(no idea what the error message said).

Then I purchased a new Western Digital drive and installed Windows on it. I then used the application GetDataBack to extract all my old files to my new drive...then I formatted the damaged drive, elliminating the Dell recovery partition but leaving the OEM system partition, and ran checkdisk in full repair mode on the large main partition(it excluded 260 bad clusters from Windows).

Then I used Diskpart.exe in DOS to remove the OEM partition as I was prohibited from doing it in Administrative tools>Disk Management(after all this is Dell's computer, not mine, I guess). This seemed to remove a repetitious popup in Windows that kept warning me to backup this disk because it had errors.

Now the only problem I have left is that every time I boot I get the Dell BIOS American Megatrends nag screen. The only workaround I've found is to F2 into BIOS setup and exit...then it boots into windows. Although everything works properly if I ... Read more

Answer:Dell BIOS nag screens after harddrive failure

Bad clusters, bad sectors can sometimes be fixed by a paid for program called Hard Drive Regenerator as long as the damage is fixable by software means. The removable of the hidden recovery partition from the first drive wasn't a good idea however.

The first best thing once you knew the drive was failing would be trying to snap an image of the entire drive to restore onto the replacement. Seagate offers their form of free version of the Acronis True Image Disk Director suite free of charge for customers. WD does the same.

As far as keeping the old drive plugged in if that is in the exact same sata port on the board it will continue to be seen as the Disk 0 in the DM as well as any other partitioning program. It will be seen as Disk 0 in the DiskPart tool as well. The Dell nag screen is likely due to something Dell placed in the recovery partition on the Seagate you didn't preserve for the new WD drive. Dell has their gimics as far as any hardware changes to contend with.

I have inherited an old Dell M6700 laptop and it's missing a hard drive. I'm wondering if that's the only thing it needs (other than an operating system installed) to make it functional, and if it's worth it for the ~$100?
I've listed some of the specs below:

Processor = Intel Quad Core i7 2.6Ghz
Memory Installed = 16384 MB
Memory Available = 16278 MB
Memory Speed = 1600 MHz

I would mostly be using the computer for 3D CAD programs, other engineering software, and some very light online gaming.
Thanks!

Harddrive failed and has been replaced. Reinstalled WinME and all other software. The only problem is the modem is not working. Have tried unistalling and reinstalling. Info from dell site (http://support.dell.com/support/top...F6FD23&docid=13BDDF9E69C1429885DAAF899E5D63FB) does not match -- ie, no Modem Helper Utility on my CD. Nor are any of the installation instructions matching what is on the Drivers&Utilites CD for the modem. Have downloaded and installed newest driver.
Modem test utility appears to pass all except getting a dial tone. Have confirmed active jacks and cords. I even have a phone plugged in through the computer, and it works, so I know the line is good, and connection is completing through the modem itself.
I think it may be related to com port -- device manager shows the modem on com3 (and nothing on com1), but port listing doesn't show a com3. I can't remember how to add a port.

Hi Everyone,
Not quite sure where to post this problem of mine but this looked like a good place. I purchased a Dell Dimension 2400 in Nov. 2005, couple of weeks ago (after bad storm) it would not turn on.I finally decided to take it in for repairs, well the motherboard was fried along with a few other things. They had a good Gateway motherboard so they combined the two, took what was good on mine and put it into the Gateway. Hard drive works, I turn on the computer it loads all the way to our names but when you click on a name the activate windows comes up. I called Micro Soft and they say I am running a illegal copy because I purchased this from Dell and it needs to run on a dell motherboard. I cannot get into setup anything not even the internet. As of now I am not sure what is in my computer but I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a Dell Hard drive with Gateway motherboard. I also have product key but Ms would not take it. Can someone help please?

Answer:Dell Dimension 2400 harddrive wed Gateway mobo

Unfortunately, your Windows and it`s key are tied into the Dell hardware and are not going to be accepted with your present hardware.

The only thing I can suggest, is you purchase a new copy of Windows.

Im currently upgrading to a new motherboard...and could not connect all the previous dell peripherials and cables (especially case specific ones such as the formed plugs for LEDS's USB power etc....) I bought a new mother board (Chaintech MP4M266A) and case so that i could install a new AGP video card but once everything is installed....I encounter problems w/ booting the computer up.

NO longer does the computer boot up identify the new motherboard and then allow for driver installation...nothing happens...the fans start up and thats it...no hard drive sounds either. is this beacuse the new board is not compatible w/ the hard drive or is it the hard drive itself? Ive done this process many many times before on a NON- dell product and have had NO problems whatsoever...but for some reason...i have problems w/ this hard drive...i can connect all the old equipment and cables back up to the stock dell motherboard and hard drive and all my information and OS and other functions run just fine its just that Im having trouble installing this new motherboard and unless i skipped something i hadnt before (including past experiece) i belive the problem is w/ the hard drive or motherboard... PLEASE HELP.

ive checked every connection and re installed the processor chip, and everthing checks out except for the boot process

Answer:Problems with combining new motherboard w/ previous dell harddrive

if you have everything connected and you hit the power button and all you get are your fans spinning you have 1 of 2 possible problems.

1.cards not properly seated/ or lack of good heatsink/no thermal paste.

2. defective component.

Suggestions: are you hearing any beeps from the system when you hit the power button.

reseat all hardware.

your hard drive has nothing to do with the equation.. even if it were "incompatible" you would still get a bios post and system would start the boot process but give hdd not found or one of the many other errors associated with hard drives.

Hi. My Dell Dimension 2400's harddrive failed. I have a new one -ready to install. But how do I get the operating system software to load once I have the harddrive installed. Went to Dell site, but didn't find anything remotely similar to 'recovery software'. Anyone know what I should do? Thanks!!!! Maggie

Answer:Replace Harddrive and Software - Dell Dimension 2400

You can try to contact Dell and see if they can sell you a recovery disc set for your computer. Not sure it they will though. Otherwise you are probably looking at buy a copy of windows, and what ever other software you need but don't have retail copies of.

A learning this here, Get an external Hdd and make an image of your system disk. If this happens again, you can just restore the image to the new disk and be on the road again.

This PC comes standard from Dell with the OEM Windows XP Operating System.
Mine had apparantely been refurbished and fitted with Windows 7 Professional
1 week after getting the thing the Harddrive died on me.
I live in an area with no place to buy internal PC hardware
So I took apart an external HDD and placed it in the Dell PC
I tried running the image disk I had made as a back up but it was faulty and did not work.
So I downloaded a torrent Win 7 Pro and created a bootable disk image.
But when I try to load the operating system it cant find the HDD and says to load driver
However it does not recognize any of the drivers I attempt to load including the ones from Dell or Seagate
I can see the drive listed in Bios
All 4 manufacturers whose hardware or software are part of this issue keep referring me to one another with no solutions

Can I install WinXP Pro from older Dell laptop on to new Dell laptop?

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8200 right now and in order to save some money on my new Dell laptop, I'd like to order Home or MediaCenter with the new computer and then install WinXP Pro myself instead of paying the extra $119 to have them do it. I have a Reinstallation CD of WinXP Pro that came with the old Dell laptop; will I be able to use it to install WinXP Pro on my new one?

Thanks.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

Answer:Laptop harddrive ??

Laptops use 2.5" hard drives. The common size is 20, 30, 40, 60 and 80Gb. You can use any make and the best deal is the one giving you the most Gb/$. The speed also comes into play and so the faster rotating speed gives a quicker response. Think the current speeds are 5400 and 7200 rpm.

Well, unfortunately I just found the first bad sector ever on the harddrive of my laptop. I just noticed it also makes a gurgling noise whenever I start to play a DVD in it, doesn't seem to make the noise when I do anything else.

So I go on a search for a PCMCIA hard drive, and I find one, at e bay, and I can't seem to find any others.

So I figured I better ask before I go blowing any money on parts that might not be great, is a PCMCIA hard drive worth the effort to find, or am I better off getting an external hard drive of some sort?

I really really don't want to have to buy a new laptop. I love this one. Up until this point, it's been extremely reliable. Moreso than any other computer I've ever owned. Which probably explains why all my other computers are sitting under a couple inches of dust, and this one is suddenly starting to give up from all the wear and tear.

Thanks.

Is there a easy way to transfer the data from my old hard drive to the new one?Click to expand...

Absolutely. It really depends on what you want to transfer. If you want to just copy your personal stuff from My Documents, you can just drag-n-drop, copy-n-paste or use something like Unstoppable Copier http://www.majorgeeks.com/Unstoppable_Copier_d2623.html If you want to copy the entire drive with Windows and all the system files and drivers, then you'll need a bootable imaging program, and if you plan on doing this on your laptop, you'll need one that supports external USB drives, mainly because there's no other way to hook up the new drive to the laptop. So, here's some links:
DigitalDolly http://www.majorgeeks.com/Digital_Dolly_d5183.html
DriveImage XML http://www.majorgeeks.com/DriveImage_XML_d4919.html
EaseUs Drive Copy http://www.majorgeeks.com/EaseUs_Disk_Copy_d4845.html
HD Clone Free Edition http://www.majorgeeks.com/HDClone_Free_Edition_d3809.html
Those are some free ones... there are others (and many $hareware programs) available in the Major Geeks "Back Up" section and "Drive Utilities" section (links below). I haven't necessarily used each of these programs; I just did some quick looking around for you, so I'm not sure if they all will work with USB drives (Digital Dolly does though) so you'll need to research them a bit further. Most laptops I've ever seen use a standard 2.5" driveBUT many of them need to drive to be mounted in some sort of holder, which differs from laptop to laptop - the last one I saw even had a connector to the drive in the holder to mate to a connector in the laptop.Without the appropriate mounting hardware you could be totally stymied. All you have to do is connect the laptop hd back to your desktop with the adapter and copy all the .cab files to the laptop hd. Or just copy the Win95 folder onto the hd. That way when you install something that requires windows files it, you can choose where the Win 95 files are.

See the thread I started with title "How to install OS on an HDD which isn't currently formatted for Windows "

The Win XP install protests if the HDD isn't a totally blank disc, and currently doesn't have a Windows partition on it. Are you getting the same symptoms as me when you either press C to create partition, or D to delete existing partition?

From the sound of it, you've installed Ubuntu (?) first, so all you'll have on the disc is an Ubuntu partition.....?

I have a couple of hard drives from laptops that I took out before recycling. It's been so long ago that I can't remember if I wiped them prior to taking them out.

What's the best way to be sure that no one can access them so I can throw them in the garbage...or whatever?

I don't want to connect them to anything. Can I just smash them apart with a hammer (which could be really fun) or something?

Answer:Laptop Harddrive Disposal

Drill, hammer, or both. Protective clothing and eye wear needed, a vise might be useful, or some sacking to cover them/contain the fragments.

Apart from the safety aspect, concentrate on accessing and then destroying the internal platters.

Time lapse video of the action is optional.

I let my nephew use my laptop and he gave it back. When I turn it on it asks for "Enter SATA port 0 HDD User Password" I asked him for the password and he states he never put one on it. So how do I get rid of it or erase the password?

My son tried to clean up his laptop and did a disk compression on it and now it will not come back on. He keeps getting the following error code: OCSMY is compressed, hit ctrl/alt/del to reboot. It gives the same code with each reboot. It is a toshiba running Windows 7.

Answer:laptop harddrive trouble

Are you sure that's the exact error message ? I ask because I can't find anything about it with Google.

What OS is on the laptop ? Do you have any disks for it ?

I have the Compaq Presario V6ooo. It has a 100GB SATA HD. I want to format the drive and put my Win XP Pro and other programs on it and get rid of the trial programs that are on the drive when I purchased it, including the OS that's on it. Everything on this drive are trial version programs and I want to install my Win XP full version OS. But when I try to do a clean installation with my windows it stops the installation and tells me it cannot find the HD. The laptop works reads and loads perfectly, but my Win won't complete the install because it can't find the hd. Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue? I don't hjave a floppy drive for this laptop, only a cd and dvd drive combo. Thanks.

my asus windows 8 laptop will not boot up. it says preparing to repair and sits there. I have no install disks for windows 8. I can not boot up the laptop. SO how can I tell if my hard drive is problem or windows? thanks

Answer:windows 8 laptop. how can I tell if my harddrive gone bad

Few solutions here.
You can ask Asus for a restoration disk.
Make a Windows 8 Boot disk on DVD or USB (one another computer) and initialize repair from there. An W8 ISO file has to be downloaded first.
Make a Linux live boot disk or USB and check HDD itself.

Hi All,

I'm trying to find out if my thinkpad t61 laptop has a max capacity in terms of harddrive.

The lenovo site said it max is 160gb but im wondering if it just what they offer because I want to go up to 200-250gb in terms of harddrive space for my T61.

Also it said Serial ATA meaning SATA drives so im wondering if that means I Can use any SATA drives such as the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive from newegg.

Thanks.

Answer:Max harddrive Capacity In My Laptop

If it supports a 160GB drive then it does 48 bit addressing in which case it should support any current capacity drive on the market thats SATA. And yes you can buy from a site such as Newegg instead of from Lenovo.

So I found my fathers Panasonic laptop from 1996 when he passed away. Unfortunately the screen was cracked and I am unable to find replacement parts because the laptop is so old, but I would really like to connect the laptop to one of my machines so that I can see what he was typing at the end of his life. Is there a way to connect a laptop harddrive to a desktop? I noticed that its ide, so if there are any cables I can buy peoples post! Thank you for anyone's help in advance.

*I'm attaching couple pictures of it to help out.*

Answer:Solved: Old Laptop Harddrive

Get one of these. Just connect the IDE portion to the hard drive and the USB to your desktop or notebook.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...56101&cm_re=ide_to_usb-_-12-156-101-_-Product

Just make sure that the one you buy has the connections for a 2.5" drive. I think most of them have both a 2.5/3,5" IDE connections, I know mine does, but you will need to verify.

I receieved this laptop, a couple years old for free.  He was going to throw it away and I said I would take it.  Well it has no harddrive.  So if I buy an external harddrive, I will need to buy windows also?  Is there any way to get windows discounted?  For example I know you get office discounted if you have a student.  Or what other alternatives are there?

Answer:Received a laptop with no harddrive

I doubt you can get a windows discount unless you get it second hand from someone else, thats all I can mention in this forum.

Happy New Year to You All. I have a Dell Latitude XPI laptop. I had to reformat the harddrive. After Fdisking and formatting the C Drive, when I try to install Win98 from an original disk, I get the error message, (corrupt cab file in setup and can not continue). Although I can load the cab files via "The Ultimate Boot Disk", I still get the same message when trying install Windows in the C Directory. Has anyone ever encountered a similar problem and if so, what do you suggest as a solution. Oh, Dell, not much help, well, NO HELP AT ALL. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Alright, heres the deal.. I have a Gateway laptop that I had to send in for repairs because the back light had burned out on the monitor. The email tech told me to take out my harddrive because I didn't want them to reformat my drive (I don't have my files backed up, I know thats my first mistake).

Now I've been told two contradicting statements regarding my IDE harddrive, by two people who are pretty good at computers, at least more capable than I am.

One says that there isn't a way to plug in my drive without it re-initializing itself, and when it does that it'll delete all my files. That the chip within my harddrive is designed to re initialize when its disconnected then re connected.

The other says that it won't be a problem, that the harddrive would only need to reformat if I have to reinstall my OS (which is Windows XP home edition). That just so long as Gateway returns my original laptop, without touching the CPU, then I should be able to pop in my harddrive and have it boot up no problem. Because he switches between two harddrives on his laptop all the time, no problem.

Now, I know that if you have a hot swappable drive you don't run into problems, but SATA is the only hot swappable drive correct? You cannot have an IDE drive that is hot swappable?

Any insight or suggestions is extremely helpful

thats ridicules, ive never heard of any hard drive that self erase itself after being reconnected

IDE can be hot swappable too (if you put it in an external enclosure)

Hi, i want to clone my laptop harddrive, it is around 60GB.How long would this approx take? Also, I am planning on using Norton Ghost, any better apps out there that would not be as resource hungry and would make the process quicker?Would it be quicker to copy some of the data onto some dvds rather than use the cloning process?

Answer:laptop harddrive cloning

Acronis TrueImage is the other popular commercial disk cloning utility. It's a bit cheaper than Norton and (in my opinion) much better. Is the 60gb the amount of data on the hard drive or just the overall size of the drive? Both TrueImage and Ghost copy just the data and the speed depends on..1) how powerful the laptop is.2) what you're backing up to (i.e blank dvd, external hard drive etc).3) how much compression the backup is using. On an average modern system, TrueImage takes roughly 15mins to back up 10gb to another drive. As for manually copying to a dvd, I guess it depends on what you want the backup for. TrueImage/Ghost copies everything including all the operating system files. You won't be able to be so thorough with a manual backup.

Hi. I'm trying to help a friend on an issue they're having with their laptop's hard drive. Their laptop does not detect the hard drive upon start up. I have a hard drive usb cable that I bought a while back for another issue I was having and I hooked it up to this drive and nothing is being detected by my computer. I hear the drive running and clicking constantly which I'm guessing isn't a good thing. Is there any way to salvage whats on there?

I've asked on the dell forum and so far one person replied and told me to either take it to a specialist or stick it in the freezer, so I figured I'd ask around for other opinions. Thanks

Answer:Laptop harddrive not detected

Do you have a SMART monitoring program installed on your PC, such as CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World ? If not, download and install it and see what it reports for the drive. Please include the report with your next reply so that we can give you better advice.

My guess is that it is going to be either a mechanical or electronic problem (or even both). Since you can hear the drive spinning and clicks emanating from it, it probably means that it is mechanically OK, although the head might have got stuck somehow or other. Try just gently giving the drive a few taps with your hand whilst it is running to see if there is any difference. Sticking it in the freezer (be sure to wrap it up so that it doesn't get damp) for a few hours and then allowing it to warm up to room temperature can sometimes free a stuck head assembly, but you do so entirely at your own risk.

The best thing to do at the moment is to see what its SMART status is and report back with the results.

hi, i have two laptops (i'm not showing off) one an ipc and the other a medion (see ) the IPC laptop has been overheating like crazy, it is out of warranty so i took the processor out and now i can't get the bugger back in it's a 370 pin push and slide/lever but the bugger won't shift; i think the contact's on the plastic inset where the chip sits are damaged.
anyway now i have taken the HDD out of the IPC and want to put it in the medion, but when i did this the winXP screen started to emerge then Wham blue screen with your computer is buggered it may be your HDD etc. and some numbers, now the HDD was fine when last used in the other Laptop, it is a 30Gb HDD whereas in the medion is a 10Gb.
so, does anyone know why this might be?

help on either prob would be appreciated.

I just got a laptop from my sister that she found. It's nothing special at all, but I'll use it to run Linux since my desktop can't (The distros I want have a problem with my GeForce 6800). The only problem is that the HDD is shot. I want to buy another one but I want to make sure that ATA-6 is what will work with it. I'm not familiar with laptops so I just want to make sure i don't buy an incompatible part. Not quite sure what standard the HDD I have now is, but the model is MK1016GAP and it's a Toshiba. The laptop itself is Toshiba Satellite Pro 4340 P650. Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi,

Laptop HD failed the other day, so i looked online.. found a 2.5" seagate 40gig IDE drive that was new. It was also advertised as a laptop HD.

When i received the drive and opened it, had in bold letter.
"NOT SUITABLE FOR LAPTOP COMPUTER USE"

I tried to install it and see what would happen.

It detected the drive, formatted the drive, all ok
But wouldnt install a copy of WIN XP.

I looked online and found the seagate LD25.5 drive is made for game consoles and DVR players.

Can anyone tell me the difference between this drive and a normal drive.

Thanks Matt

Okay have this Compaq Presario 2100, and the original harddrive was having disk read errors, so i got a new seagate harddrive, popped it in, and tried to start a CD recovery, after a few minutes it has a problem extracting a file. So i tried again, but this time it would not boot from the CD, i checked the BIOS and the CD-ROM had the first boot priority, so i got an external CD-ROM thinkin maybe the CD-ROM was faulty, hooked it up via USB, no good, wouldnt go past the COMPAQ screen, so i installed Windows via another Laptop on the Seagate HD, and then tried to put in the Compaq, and all i would get is the Windows Could Start Due To A Hardware Change, so i select start Windows Normally, the little bar starts to fill, but once it gets to the end, nothing happens and then a little while after, the computer turns off...any suggestions...or is this computer a dud ?

Answer:Laptop Harddrive Issue

You cannot install Windows on one machine, then expect it to run on a different machine.

Try changing the IDE/SATA cable for your harddrive.

A friend brought over a Toshiba, Satellite A75-S231, Laptop, Windows XP Home, its about 4 years old.It was acting pretty erratic. I ran check disk, found tons of bad sectors, I have ran check disk 6-7 times now and it still is finding bad sectors and attempts to repair them.I put check marks in "Automatically fix file system errors""Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors"My question, which I am assuming is the case, Is the hard drive junk? Thanks

Answer:Toshiba Laptop HardDrive problem

It sounds like it....If you want to be sure download and run the diagnostics utility from the manufacturer of the laptop. It can perform a much more thorough test of the drive than chkdsk.
