Unknown Application Icons in C:\Program Files

Question: Unknown Application Icons in C:\Program Files

Hi,WinXP Home, sp2.I've been looking in my C:\Program Files and i've come across 2 'application' icons that i've not noticed before. One is called 'Delete.exe' (size 40kb) and the other is called 'SetAttrib.exe' (size 44kb), both created 22/2/2006. One says modified 30th Nov 2004, the laptop wasn't even built then. The other says modified 21st Jan 2005. There's no information for either in the 'summary' tab. I've done a full scan with Norton, Ad-Aware SE, A-Squared and Ewido and everythings coming up clean. Has anyone any idea what these application icons could be please.Cheers Chris.

Preferred Solution: Unknown Application Icons in C:\Program Files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Many of my application icons (exe) have changed to default blue rectangle,
and other applications icons changed to unknown type (e.g. pdf icons)

I have tried windows restore - that wont work
I have tried changing from 32 bit to 16 bit and back that wont work either.

It has nothing to do with resolution. I am attaching a snapshot of what i mean.

Please help me restore them back or let me know if this is due to a virus or trojan.

Thanks a lot for your help

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on Dell XPS 15 L502x Notebook.

Today morning when i switched on my laptop, I found some of the Icon changed to unknown icon.(See Attachements)

I searched google i found somewhere a question was posted with same problem. The solution was given as to change the destination of the target exe file. I performed it by renaming the folder in which the exe file is present. I found that the icon changed back to original icons from unknown-icon.

Also when i right click and select properties of those exe files, the original icon of the application appears there, but not in explorer / desktop / taskbar.

I am posting this question here to troubleshoot my problem.
Dont ask me to reinstall all applications and software. I have already done it and but the icon remains as Unknown until i change its destination from its original destination. Even avast icon changed to unknown.(see image) But i cant change its destination to check for its reappearance because it is always open when i start system.

Why this destination(Target path) of the exe file affect the original icon of the application.

Also guide me how to attach image in my post

Hi, my os is window vista. Recently i opened an unknown application (.cfg file type, some games files) with notepad editor to see what it is inside. I change something and save it. the file type is still cfg but now it always open with a notepad which coz my game to how do i remove the open with notepad and set it to a an unknown application..which my com don actually recognizes it and will prompt me to search the internet.

Answer:Changing open with default program to unknown application.

Press Start (the Windows icon on the bottom right), type regedit and press enter. Press Continue when the UAC thing pops up. Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes, find the .cfg key and delete it. This will reset it so when you open any cfg file it will ask you which program you want to open it with. You may have to restart your computer after completing the above steps.

You posted this in the wrong section by the way.

Since installing WinXP i am frequently troubled by files that i am unable to rename, move or delete. I get an error stating that the file is being used by some other application. I find this a little strange since this will also occur if the PC has just booted up. There are no other Apps open, nor is there anything that looks suspect in the task manager.

The files that tend to be affected are DivX (avi), the strange thing is that sometimes i can delete a file with no problems after having had trouble touching it for hours/days before hand. I never experienced anything like this with Win2k - any ideas anyone..?

Answer:Files locked by unknown application

I can't understand why you would get that when trying to move or rename a file unless it's a .dll system file which alot of programs in xp use. If I'm reading you correctly the DivX file contains .dll files which you must have inorder for your operating system to run so it's important not to remove nor rename them. There are other ways but I would not do it. If you get that error 9 times out of 10 thats why. Even if you install a game you got at the store this can happen. Becareful of what you remove or you'll be back on here asking how to restore your system.

Hi, I badly need your help. I just newly installed a WinXP Professional on this PC and I instantly got unwanted popups and unknown programs. All was working fine until when I installed yahoo messenger and ran Launchcast.

I ran ewido scans twice, deleted the Windows folder, and re-installed the OS, but the problem still remains.

There are popups, browser hijack, unknown programs running in the background, a pp4ico.exe in the desktop, and a lot of shortcuts appears on the desktop (shortcuts that lead to urls instead of programs).

Here is the Hijack log as of the moment:

Answer:Popups, unknown program on desktop, cannot delete some files

You have no anti-virus software and no service packs!

You need to go here and install "Service Pack 1" This will patch numerous security holes in IE and Windows. As your machine stands now it is wide open to attack from all sorts of nasties. You need to get these updates before we proceed or we will be wasting our time.

DO NOT install Service pack 2 yet. If you install SP 2 on an infected machine it will cause serious problems. Just get Service Pack 1 installed. After you get SP1 installed, restart your computer. Come back here and post the new Hijack This log.

Working with an X61s running XP Pro SP3. We are using a third party program (Ghost) to do our own image backups.  These are coming in larger than expected so I began by doing a disk cleanup, emptying recycle bin, temp files etc.  After those steps... Properties for Drive C show 35.5 G out of 160 used. However, when I add up any folders off the root that have more than .5G I get 29.7 G.That leaves 6 G unaccounted for.I have check Lenovo's Restore and Recovery function and it is OFF and has been off as soon as we started working with the machine.  When I open that program, it shows no files available... so apparently(?) none where made. There is a 5G Fat 32 partition that I assume is Lenovo's factory image file.  That partition is not part of the Ghost Image. I ran WinDirStat and found a file that IS a 5.9 G file located under Program Files which shows in WinDirStat as c:\Program Files\<unknown>. If I open Windows Explorer, the total files under Program Files equals the total for the individual folders under Program Files (EXCLUDING the "unknown")... so the "unknown" folder does not show up in Windows Explorer... only in WinDirStat... and in the image files I create with Ghost. Any one know if this 5.9G "unknown" file has anything to do with Lenovo's many built in programs?  Suggestions welcome.

Answer:Where is the Lenovo Factory Image stored - and what is c:\program files\<unknown>?

I am seeing the same situation with a T400 running Win 7, but my file is 52GB and I have turned off everything in Restore at both the WIndows and Lenovo levels with no relief. This is crazy as I have never encountered such a situation before. Can anyone help.

Using Windows XP Professional Service PAck 3. Had a trojan which I got cleaned up. Trojan made all my icons for files and program files disappear. Found out they were changed to hidden files. Was able to get them to appear by checking view hidden file icons in the folder options section of My Computer. However all the icons are now light in color compared to new file icons that have been created since. the light color makes me thjink they are still somehow tagged as hidden files.

Also when I go to Start > My Programs, it is all empty and none of the programs that were previously listed are there any longer.

Any suggestions on what to try next to make all my normal file icons (like word documents, etc...) and the program file icons no longer be tagged as hidden and also to get all the programs back into My Programs

Running Win7 on a Dell Inspiron 1520 with upgraded RAM, otherwise the laptop is stock. Laptop came with WindowsXP installed, I upgraded to Vista, ran flawlessly for 3 years but had accumulated junk and system was running painfully slow. I decided to do some cleanup and went to cnet to find good cleanup utilities. I am assuming that is where I inadvertanly downloaded an infected program. The cleanup was going well, freed up a lot of space and the system seemed to run faster although boot up was still painfully long and it seemed the hd was running very hard in the background.

I first noticed a problem with my AV Webroot with SpySweeper. It was not loaded to actively scan and protect me, when I tried I got an error I never saw before that said webroot had to close and to restart the program, and a status bar showed a progress of closing the program. but after it finished and I clicked OK the program would not start at all nor could I run any scans.

Then I noticed Windows Defender was turned off, and I turned it on but a scan would not start. I tried Malwarebytes and it ran once, said it found something but needed to reboot to fix, I rebooted and malwarebytes did not load and run nor could I ever get it to run a scan after that and I could never find what it had found. The same scenario happened with AVG free and any other scanner I tried including kaspersky. I even tried donloading them from another computer to a flash drive and installing from it but... HI there,

For the last month I've had a bewildering laundry list of problems with my computer. Firefox 37.0.1 started using superhigh CPU to open and load pages. Then Thunderbird and Avast! began to do the same when connecting to the internet for downloads/updates. Then my printer ditto. When printing, I can't do anything else. (It's Brother MFC 4500+, an ancient workhorse that's never given me a day's trouble.)

Then my mouse went on the fritz; swapped out to another mouse and got the same problem---the pointer freezes and restarts intermittently, then freezes altogether. I can get it working again by unplugging the USB and plugging it in again, but the fix is temporary, maybe hours, maybe seconds. Every now and then I get a Windows message in the taskbar tray that "something has happened" and the system can't recognize my USB device.

The problems didn't happen all at once, but rather in the sequence that I've noted. I've run different antivirus and malware and rootkit scans repeatedly, but all come up clean. FWIW, I run good computer utilities every week or so, so the system is squeaky clean that way. I've been limping along.

Not sure what happened. Yesterday I downloaded an critical update from microsoft but did not restart my computer to complete it. I turned off the computer a few minutes later. Then this morning I started my computer and a popup saying there was a "major malfunction in the system" (can't remember exact words) appeared. Also, spyware was notifying me of an attempt to change registry. I forgot about yesterday's update and denied access to the registry change and closed it. I then restarted to fix anything that may have happened during the previous start malfunction. Upon restart all icons except Recycle and Internet Explorer are the standard microsoft icons and it says windows cannot open any of my program files. If I try to open my saved files it says "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel". System Restore says the same thing. System folder will not open. What are my options for recovering my system programs and files. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:Lost icons and ability to open any program files.

Have you tried doing system restore and virus scans in safe mode? (press f8 repeatedly at startup to get the menu) or try the "last known good configuration" option in the startup menu with f8.

There are a lot of post here and elsewhere of people who want to show previews of PDFs and images rather than the generic program icons of the viewer programs. There are a lot of posts of people who don't want to show the previews and only want to show the program icons.

I want to know if there's some way I can choose which extensions show previews, say only JPG and GIF files, while leaving other files, like PDFs showing the generic program icon.

I know the File View options setting (Always show icons, never thumbnails), but that's an all or nothing option. I want to choose which extensions show thumbnails. (Specifically, just want generic PDF icon for those files, rather than first page preview, but want the previews for photos.) Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Good evening all,Earlier this afternoon, my computer got some sort of virus/malware where a lot of my desktop icons started disappearing from the screen in rapid succession - along with several "warning" popups. I re-started the computer in safe mode and ran Malware Bytes and Super Anti-Spyware. Between the two of them, I think it may have gotten rid of the virus (?), however, it did not restore any of my desktop icons or start menu programs. Several of the folders in the Start Menu just say "empty".I have done a little bit of research on Google and have been able to restore some of the default windows icons, etc., but still missing several, and am not sure how to get them back. In addition, unfortunately, I ran a cleaner program that deleted all my temp files. Due to a Google search, I fear this was a big mistake because it appears the virus may have just moved all the shortcuts, etc. to the Temp folder - from which they could have been restored, had they not been deleted. In addition, I noticed that my computer is telling me that I need "administrator permission" to create shortcuts, change shortcut names, etc... when it never used to do that. My computer lists my profile as an administrator in the Control Panel, so I am not sure why it is doing that.To be honest, I am really not sure what all is missing... or what else might be affected that I am not noticing. I have run the DDS scan and GMER scans. However, the GMER program would not let me ru... Read more

That error indicates that you have some Symantec protection product (NAV, NIS, Norton 360, ad infinitum) installed on your system. If this is true, I suggest that you uninstall it (because the Live Update portion seems to be corrupted) via Add/remove Programs...then reinstall it and update it.I used to use NIS/NAV and I know that Live Update should have it's own item in Add/Remove Programs. You might be able to get away with just uninstalling that...but I don't think it installs as a separate item.Louis

So I just downloaded this game, gunbound, and after I started the program my computer froze. I restarted it and then I noticed that all the text was very small. Like the program names, and the start menu and any other text is really small.
I don't know how to explain other than showing you a picture.

Notice how the text is realllllly small.
I don't know what to do. Because all the programs I download their text is small so I can't really do anything.

I found out how to get hijackthis tho.
Here's my log.

Edit: removed inline log

Answer:Unknown Virus! Makes Text on Program Files Extremely Tiny. Too small to decipher.

Not thinking that this was caused by a virus, but as you mentioned this only happened after installing this game... dependant on where you downloaded this game from it may have been infected with a virus.

Hi, I'm transferring files from one PC to another and when I open dll files in the new pc, they open in IE. On the other one they are listed as "Unknown Application." I tried going in and changing how to open the files, but "Unknown Application" is not a choice. How do I change this so the dll files open in Unknown App? I have to install four dll files in order to get a program to function properly on my computer. Thanks.

Hello everyone, before you guys beat me up, I'm well aware of this post
'Changing open with default program to unknown application' previously posted in this forum.
I followed the instructions posted by tacoman359 (Thank you Tacoman359) but it didn't work. I even restarted my pc and the .cfg is still being associated with notepad.
My os is vista; and I have exactly the same problem and the same reasons as jianming (the first person to post this issue). I even tried a few cmd assoc scripts and still, .cfg "opens with" notepad is still there. I have also tried to disaccoate .cfg from notepad in the other regedit HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT by removing the value data.
Is there anything else I can do to get the default reset back to unkown application?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I use several different word processors, two of which are Atlantis and Jarte. Both create (mostly) .rtf files. My favorite kind.
On my XP computer, Atlantis and Jarte (and every other word processor I've ever used) show their own icons in Explorer. If I use Atlantis to create an .rtf file, that file shows Atlantis' icon, and every file I create in Jarte shows Jarte's icon.
On my Win7 machine, that is not happening. I get an icon that Windows believes is the default .rtf file and that's all. Is there some way I can change that behavior to the XP way of displaying icons?
Yes, I did change the default .rtf application hoping that would fix the "problem", but it did not. It only changed the default icons to the app I chose as the default. I would very much like to know, at a glance,  which wordprocessor created a specific file.
If you can help, I thank you very much. If not, thanks anyway.

Answer:File Type Icons vs Application Icons

Unfortunately, that will not happen within Windows 7.  One work-around is to have, under a master rtf folder, an rtf folder for X program and an rtf folder for program Y, with programs X & Y preset to save everything in their assigned directories.

First off, I'm new to the site and I will definately be here for good because there is a ton of info here.  To the problem, I have been searching this site for about 2 hours now.  I have a computer running Windows XP Home SP2.  I know it has a number of virus issues as well as how to address them under normal circumstances so here we go...Computer will boot normally and in safe mode...Normal boot, I cannot open anything from desktop icons or start menu.  If a program seems to start it just closes the window imidiately.Safe Mode Boot, programs will open from desktop icons...some of themIn booting in either mood I cannot access the internet, save or transfer files from one folder to the next(including desktop) or load programs from my jump drive.  If I try to run a program from my jump drive it begins then a pop-up refers to the operation being denied by the admin (i have no admin settings that would cause this).  I have read and understand how this site works, but I cannot download  or open from a jump drive any of the antivirus/malware programs you list, nor can I get a log of any sort.  I can access the registry editor, so I need to know if there is a way to manually locate the virus affecting my bogus admin settings or if there is another way to open files or copy them to my computer.  If I can start any anitvirus program (SuperAnti Spyware, Malware Bytes I use them both on other machines regualarly) I would be well on my wa... Okay, this is definitely tricky.  You have a SmitFraud infection at the very least (it's not usually quite this malicious, so I doubt it's alone).  If everything you say is accurate, then your chances aren't great, but we'll do what we can.  You say can't access anything from a jumpdrive on your computer...but what about a CD?  If you could at least get HijackThis on there, it would prove very useful.Infections can be disabled through the registry, but there are thousands of different entries, so finding the proper ones is an incredibly daunting task.  I could possibly help you disable SmitFraud (no guarantee), but first, get back to me on my question about the CD drive.  In the meantime, I will have to acquire some information.

I loaded up explorer and opened up my C:/ drive to start a game in my program files, accidentally pressing "Downloads" finding this file there, my operating system is Swedish so the folder should be named "Hämtningar" (Swedish for downloads). The file is 93 kb in size and was created on the 27th january, there is also an account named "Unknown account(S-1-5-21-a bunch of numbers)" with total control, I also have no ability to remove it. I would like some help with this, malwarebytes also doesn't react on it. I've also noticed I'm unable to visit Bing (not like I use it, but still weird) with the access denied error.

I searched the site for a while and couldn't find an answer.... so I decided to post my question... sorry if this has been asked before.

Somehow every .IFO file on my computer (using XP) has been set to open with notepad as the default.... these files were from movies I've backed up to my computer, and when I burn the movies to a disc they burn properly, but then they won't read correctly when played on the dvd player. At first I thought it was just the type of discs I was using.. but later realized that the problem never occurred before I noticed all the .IFO files as default set to open with notepad.

What I need to know is how to set the properties of my .IFO files to read as Unknown application instead of Notepad.

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help.

How can you remove/delete program icons etc. for one user, not for other.

I have my system set up with TWO users; Administrator and one other 'limited' user [so the kids can be on PC etc.]. When I install programs, icons are on both desktops. If I for instance delete an icon in one user, it also disapears in the other.

I have checked everywhere; For eg. in c:/users/.../desktop folder there are only some files/icons there, but on the desktop its self there are many more, and if I delete an icon, it also dissapears from my admin desktop.

Answer:ICONS View/Hide program icons for users

I believe you need to move the icons out of C:\Users\Public\Desktop to your account Desktop. That should prevent them from being visible to the limited account.

I noticed last night that I have an unknown (to me at least...not unusual) rar.Upon opening there is an application that has downloads from all torrent and file sharing sites but no description whatsoever.
Does anyone know what u996.exe is? The only info I could find on Google is that it is unknown from an unknown publisher and is not necessary but should not be removed if not causing problems. I did download the Sophos version of the vulnerability exploit that has recently been discovered, that MS's version of the patch apparently (according to Grinler's post), can or will remove the icons from your desktop, but I don't recall that as the name of the file. Any answers?
Many thanks in advance,

Answer:unknown application

I found only scant information relating to known files by the name "u966.exe" and what I did find was rather perplexing. There is a project hosted on Google Code called bma-ebook, which appears to have something to do with the nation of Burma (which is called Myanmar and has been under an oppressive military junta for a long time. You may remember some rather severe protests there making the news in 2007. The Myanmarian Junta rather severely limits, filters and monitors the use of the Internet by its citizens.)

Anyhow, near as I can figure, u966.exe (or at least the one I found) is some sort of internet proxy application. That is, a means by which a person in Myanmar could access otherwise prohibited Internet locations and data, such as those relating to anti-government activists and the like.

This is all largely speculation on my part since, as I said, information was scant and perplexing.

Bearing the above in mind, and assuming that you are neither a Burmese dissident nor attempting to proxy your internet usage, I would say that this file (and the other, torrent, files) indicates that your machine may be compromised and being actively used as a dumpster for bittorrent data, the proxy tool being a facilitator to that. For that reason, I am moving your topic to the "Am I Hacked? What Do I Do?" forum so that a system security helper can either rule out a hack attack or help you to remove it.

Hi all,
yesterday i was performing some routing maintenance on my pc, and i noticed there was an evernt log showing an error of an application that was stored in the path. (Please note i didnt mistype VLC).
It was always giving me an error code 0x0000005. I am worried if this is some sort of virus.
when i checked with a windows defender and avg i got no virus. It was also using the visual basic command line script process when i checked task manager.
What else could i do to check out the problem?

EDIT: I tried searching online, but i found no results

Hi everyone, today, when I turned on my pc, at startup, regedit32.exe says that needs my permision to do changes on registry (I use win7 64 bits sp1)
that's seems suspicious to me so I say NO.
when I take a look at my folder, I found an application called kedxalekcyfy.exe

I really don't know what this thing is, so I started searching information on google..and the only result I got is a page in a unknown language, but it looks like it's an spyware forum and someone had a problem like I had.

the point is, I don't know what does this app do. I tried analysis with AVG, with MalwareBytes, with tdsskiller, and adwCleaner, but none of them detect this strange app.

So, I'm going to give all the information I could gather on my pc about this thing.

-it's located on c:/user/me
-the file shows no relevant information on it's details.
-the file is also running as a process (32bits) on task manager and doesn't
let me finish it

on registry it appears on:

(this happened once)
if I try to open or do something over this file..pc restarts itself!
So, I guess that's all. What do you recommend?

thanks in advance!

Answer:unknown application (kedxalekcyfy)

Also, on msconfig, I have this info:

regedit32 as unknown and starting at c/windows/system32/regedit.exe (twice)

kedxalekcyfy as unknown starting at c:/users/me/kedxalekcyfy.exe
kedxalekcyfy as unknown starting at c:/programdata/kedxalekcyfy.exe

this is...weird.

again, thanks.

If I yes, uninstall shield starts, then returns unable to locate log file? If I no, the message dissappears, but it happens at every start? How do I get to the win.ini-like file to delete the error commands?

Answer:unknown remove application errors

The win.ini stuff is in the registry. You will need to write down the exact error messages for an indication of what app it is trying to remove. Then, use regedit to search for the uninstall command and remove it. Always be careful when editing the registry, but, if you stick with software keys, then you should only effect the software and not the system.

Hello all,

So after doing a full virus scan yesterday and removing a bunch of threats from my computer, I suddenly noticed that my PC was being impossibly slow. I opened up task manager and saw that some random program titled "srsx.exe" was chewing up 97% of my CPU's processing power. I ended the process, but about 2 minutes later it automatically popped up again and resumed chewing up all of my CPU.

I ended the process again, opened the file location, and deleted the folder, which was in my AppData/Local folder inside of a folder simply entitled "Crypto". I have absolutely no idea what it was or who installed or how it was installed, so I deleted the entire folder and emptied it from my recycle bin.

Now, every 2-3 minutes, my computer keeps on popping up the following error message, despite the fact that I no longer have that program even on my hard drive anymore. I don't know how to stop it or get rid of it and it's driving me absolutely crazy. Every time it pops up, whatever I'm doing minimizes to desktop so I can read this stupid error message. This can get particularly frustrating while playing games, which is largely what I do on this computer.

If I could get any help or knowledge for this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Here is the picture of my error message:

I'm researching a problem for a friend who's having issues with an unknown application stealing focus. She'll be using AIM, IE, and some other progs and the active window will become inactive and the focus is stolen to... who knows where. there's no apparent window that becomes the focus and there aren't any programs running that should be doing it, as far as she can tell. also, windows explorer windows will close automatically.

thanks for any help!

Answer:Unknown application stealing focus

She may have a browser hijack object. Suggest that she goes to Windows Explorer>Programme Files and creates a new folder, calling it hJT. Go to and download HiJackThis, unzipping it into that folder from where she can also run it. Tell her not to allow HijackThis to fix anything until she copies and pastes the log back here and awaits some specialist analysis.

My computers are both running Win 7 64-bit. I am thoroughly confused when it comes to placing programs that I download into their proper folders: That is, program files (x86) vs program files. I have read stuff on this, but still confused. for the most part, even when a dl'd program suggests being installed into PF, I, for whatever reason, place it into PF (x86). Although I have read that placing the program into the wrong folder may cause the program not to work properly, so far I have not had this problem...nor any other problems that I am aware of. Could someone please set me straight on this issue?

Answer:Program Files or Program Files (x86)-Where to place downloaded program

I let the installer put it where it is supposed to.

If I trust the software I trust they know best where it should be installed/placed.

If I can't trust the software maker why am I downloading/installing their program?

Ok... Hi guys.

To give some computer background info.
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit with 4gb ram. (Any more info can be provided when neccessary)

I was on the computer when i noticed on of my programs that is "attached" to my taskbar had that default Windows icon, it was white with a little program sign in the middle. I tried running it, and it was fine. As I frantically tried to find a solution, i noticed that most of my programs were like that. From Office programs, to programs like Sony Vegas, 3Ds Max, Turbotax, Steam, Safari, Skype, Windows Live Messenger, and many more. Not all are messed up though, some are completely fine. The weird thing is that I can run all of these normally. I tried going into the properties of the program and change the icon. When i clicked to change it, it said couldnt not locate the original one, and prompted me to look for a new one to use. I redirected the icon directory to the ie: /program files/windows live/messenger/wlmicon.jpg, and clicked apply, then ok. Once i did this nothing happened, and when i went back into the properties, I could see the new image i chose, hidden under the ugly White default windows icon.

This is really bugging me, since many of my programs are looking like they are messed up, but they're in fact fine. I searched some stuff on this on google to no avail.

Can you guys please help me out, thanks!

Whilst working on problem with my Win10 OS, I found a bit of treacle during my examination. The Intel iCLS Client shows system environment variables for both the C:\Program Files directory and also C:\Program Files (x86). I don't see how that could be correct.

Sure enough, there are files in both locations.
That and several other Intel component appear in dual locations.

If appropriate to clean up, what steps would I use? Seems to me that uninstalling has a lot of potential to break something severely, and I suspect these won't uninstall cleanly.

I'll be chasing around looking for install files while waiting for your thoughts on the thread. Cheers.

In the coming week I will be installing Windows 10 Home on my new computer. I will be using an SSD and an HDD, the SSD for the OS, programs and games and the HDD for photos, music and all the other slow stuff.
So, my question. In case the OS were to ever get corrupted, or I had to reinstall the OS for any other reason, is it possible to have the SSD set up as follows; Partition 1 - OS, Partition 2 - Program Files/Program Files((x86) plus other associated folders/files) and Partition 3 for my games, so that any re-install does not wipe out my already installed programs?

I had no problem doing this in with my XP desktop(OS in C and Progs in D, although not perfect, but was never able to do it with Windows 7.

Can it be done?

Hello, I have what I believe to be a problem. On all my Windows 10 machines I have discovered a Hidden Unknown Background Process running at all times. This Unknown Process is not visible in the normal task manager, it's only visible in third party tools like cports and other networking tools. Dose any one know what this is, or if it's a problem or not. Sometimes the Unknown Process will launch many other Unknown Processes making windows 10 slow to react. Below is a list of hosts the Unknown Process is sending requests back and forth to.
Not everything in the list below was coming from this Unknown Process but a lot of it was, I just copied out my block list from my host file and posted it, so some of the list may have been coming from other possesses but most of them are from this Unknown Background application in windows 10.

I already scanned for a probable spyware or any infection but nothing happened. I hope I could turn them back to its original icons. I saved my itunes installer to my flash disk to try if this will look the same on my friends laptop but unfortunately, it showed the real itunes icon. Is there any settings or registry that I need to edit on my system? Please help me guys!

You'll have to be sure that your system is free of malware before trying the fix below. If your system is infected the best case is that the fix will fail - the worst case is that it can open up additional ways to infect your system. Try one of these free, online scans first:(Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully) Scan Only - no removal<links compiled on 02/14/2008><links reordered on 09/10/2008> Once that's done, try the "EXE File Association Fix" on this page: is the code contanied in the registry file for the above fix:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Answer:I have some unknown program in my program and features.

I'm assuming that you've run a malware scan that came up clean. Otherwise, run something like Malwarebytes or Adwcleaner to be sure. These seem to have Microsoft icons associated with them. If they appear in Control Panel/Programs & Features or your Program Files x84, then do a sort by installation date and see if they were installed at the same time as ASP.NET or Visual C++ or some other program. Then you'll know that they are a byproduct of something else. You may simply create a restore point, uninstall and see what happens.

I have a problem and then a question.

My icons were recently messed with when starting my compute. This is what "My Computer" currently looks like:

And then in control panel:
For some reason, they are gone. Do you know how I can recover these? Furthermore, when I do click on the C or D drive, it directs me to file search. Thought if I right-click on the disk and click on open, I can continue as usual.

I tried going though system restore, but the last and only available date is at 3:52 AM today. I went through Tweak UI, but that didn't work either.

Computer specs are below. Any and all help would be appreciated.

And then my question. Is it a good idea to compress my hard drive to conserve disk space?

Answer:Disk Icons gone, various icons gone, files re-arranged and a question

Did you use StarDock?

Because I experienced this problem before.

Unknown Application secretly opens/closes IE window

I have IE Privacy Keeper installed and set to Auto Clean Up when the last Internet Explorer window is closed and set to show the ?Cleaning up ?? message. When I first connect to the Internet via my ISP (Wal-Mart Connect) and before I open any Internet Explorer window, the ?Cleaning up ?? message from IE Privacy Keeper flashes on my screen. This tell me that some application on my hard drive has secretly opened an Internet Explorer window and then closed that window within the span of a few seconds, presumably to pass information stored on my computer to someone connected to the Internet.

I?ve read and performed the How to: Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal ( with no luck on fixing the problem. Please tell me how I can find out which application(s) on my hard drive are secretly opening an Internet Explorer window and then closing that window. Thanks.

It is very important that you at least try to do everything in the READ ME. If you still have a problem then do the following:

Please try to turn OFF any applications that are not needed It makes it much easier to look at the HJT log.
Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99.1 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, INCLUDING YOUR WEB BROWSER, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder for example C:\Program Files\HJT

Good Luck

Hi new to this so go easy. Running XP with all the updates.
Had a problem with installing KB 2393802 on an automatic download and was advised to delete some dlls and run TweaksIE because I could not get internet in safe mode. Anyway I did this and it solved the problem of the KB installation and the the internet (old Norton install) whilst in safe mode. Sorry but I made a note of the dlls and cant kind find it anywhere.

Now Windows explore will not display the folder icons correctly on either the tree or the folder view panes. I think they are showing the default view for "Unknown file types. (Its a white background box with some blue inserts inside).

I have played around with folder view but with no success and now struggling after a few hours to progress. Can anyone help?

Answer:XP Explore ICONS Unknown

Run sfc /scannow
This will start the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.
There is a dll cache so if you need the ones you removed, it will probably restore them. I'm very skittish about removing any system files. I usually move them to the desktop and create a text file with the path where they were. Then if something goes wrong, I put them back exactly where they were originally.
