Cheap and reasonable graphics card

Question: Cheap and reasonable graphics card

I believe that I have an on-board graphics card installed on my computer. Previously I was able to use Google Earth, but for some unknown reason I was no longer able to use this programme. Various alternatives was advised via Google help and error messages, but none seem to work.My remaining alternative (according to Google) is to get a 'better' graphics card.Any suggestions for a straight forward replacement. Not into high speed gaming or fancy high capacity 3 D's. Something cheap and simple, with possible links would be ideal.Final question: Is it possible to fit an additional graphics card to on-board system!.

Preferred Solution: Cheap and reasonable graphics card

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Cheap and reasonable graphics card

Yes it is possible for you to have additional graphics, you will have to disable your onboard graphics once you have a new graphics card.Do you know what expansion slots you have available so that suggestions for graphics cards can be suited to your needs.

Is this a reasonable graphics card?

ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 256Mb AGP

It will be used with a Gigabyte 8VM800PMD-775 mobo

on a 2.8ghz celeron with 1gb Ram, 200gb hdd

Answer:Is this a reasonable graphics card?

How much does it cost?
I recommend a 6600GT video card. It should costly almost the same, and you get a lot more performance.

The two bad things are these:

a) You must have a good, quality 300-350 power supply, from a good, well-known manufacturer, with at least 20 A on the 12V rail, in order to have a stable computer.

b) The performance of a 9800 PRO or a 6600GT will be limited by your current CPU (is it a Celeron D or a Celeron?).

Good luck!

My Computer recently broke down to an irreparable level, this could not have come at a worse time since I will be cash strapped for the next 6 or so months. Though I have found an AMD Athlon 3800+ X2 system for sale for only $125AUD. Pretty much a barebones system with XP SP2, I can swap my hard drives and Graphics card to this computer.

The question I'm wondering is, due to my non-experience with AMD, I'm not sure how it will handle compared to my other ancient system.

Main uses for the computer were: Browsing, Photo-editing, Occasional Video-Editing and some light Gaming(Crysis/COD/Oblivion, only with settings set to medium and not planning to purchase any more graphic intensive games) Not sure if this computer will handle them.

Oh and incase this post doesn't already show the specs for my last computer, the basics were.

Pentium D 2.8GHz Processor
320GB Hard Drive
160GB OS Hard Drive
250 Watt PSU (Yes I know, very bad considering the video card)
Asus ATI Radeon 4670

Answer:Reasonable cheap upgrade for fried Pentium D system?

Sure, it'd work fine; you'll need to reformat though.

Answer:Onboard Graphics vs (cheap) Graphics Card

Hi,I have a PC Chips 810LMR motherboard with a 1.3 Duron Processor 512meg sdram & Windows ME.At the moment I am using the onboard graphics but I am considering getting a (cheap) graphics card via Ebay.I don't play games (other than Pinball & Solitaire), I use the PC mainly for the Internet browsing, typing, spreadsheets, e-mail etc.Would a AGP card display text any crisper than the onboard graphics? If so what is the minimum specification that you recommend? Thanks.

Dear all,I have decided that my graphics card isnt sufficient to play new games. its the ATI radeon 8500LE (with 64mb of RAM).My processor is 2000XP+ (Athlon) and have 1gb of ram.I know that the graphics card is the bottleneck. My mobo only supports AGP 4x.Ideally i want a graphics card that will (at the very most) cost around 100.I will upgrade the mobo at a later date (to support agp 8X), but suggestions for this are also welcome.I have a low budget and want a graphics card that will play games (not with all the graphics on high) but at least on medium to best, and one that i will notice the difference from my current card. Thanks for your help in advance....Phil

Hey Everyone!

(I'm ready for the flames) so-o-o .. Here goes anyway.

I'm broke .. for the time being and don't have any money for a video card.

I have an old card, (first link) that I want to try out in my new pc. (second link)

The card had been in my xp which used the same on-board chip as my new pc.

Questions: Will the card work?
Will the graphics improve?
(no high end video games here)

The card itself was never used in the xp because the xp's board was bad from the begining and I was too much of a Noob at the time to know that I was only running from the onboard graphics.

CARD: (Click on the ? marks) No idea why the question marks show up and not the url.

New PC:

eMachines ET1331G-03W - PC Desktops -

Was also thinking of putting this TV Tuner card in the pc that also came from the old xp.

Tuner Card: (Again, Click on the ? marks)

BTW: My System Specs shows "MY PC"
The PC that I am going to experiment on is .. My Wifes! LOL

Answer:Cheap Graphics Card

Hi Mr close,I had the same integrated graphics in mine before i upgraded,to be honest i would stick to the integrated card that comes with your new machine especially since you have 6 gigs of memory, its not bad, mine managed to run call of duty 4 and the sims 3,plus i doubt you will find drivers for the card from your old machine plus another point to remember is The new pc must be 64bit if it comes with 6gigs of memory so you may have difficulty there.

Hello folks. I'm looking to buy a cheap graphics card for a secondary computer I have. I'm thinking of getting it off eBay or somewhere similar. The computer has an AGP x8 slot currently occupied by a 5700LE. I'm selling this to a friend and looking to replace it with something a bit more snazzy, maybe a 5700 Ultra. But I was wondering if anybody has other suggestions, for example would a 6200 be better? The main problem is I don't know the power supply as I got this computer second hand, so I'm wary of getting anything too far above my current card. If anyone has any suggestions on a new card, or if they know how much more power is required by the 6200, it would be appreciated. As you can gather I am just looking for a cheap card that will play games "well enough".I have included an Everest report. Also I am planning on increasing the RAM amount as well.Thanks.Edit: Ok it didn't like a htm file so I'm zipping it...

Answer:Cheap Graphics Card

Glancing through your report, you need more free space on your HDD.The 6200 will be less powerful than the 5700 you already have.I'm not too sure of AGP cards available nowadays, but you'd really need the PSU specs before upgrading as many new cards demand a lot of power.Something like a 6600 would be good, or the 5700 Ultra you mentioned.A 5900 series might be OK too.

Okay, I'm totally dense about the various computer components and their specs and values. But I'm thinking about upgrading and there seems to be a lot of disparity in price out there, especially on the internet.

For example, some graphics cards cost 1000 and some cost 20, and there doesn't seem to be all that much difference between them.

So if you that this graphics card below,

It costs 36.95, but the specs seem to be quite reasonable.

What am I missing here?

Many thanks.

Answer:Why is this graphics card so cheap?

9400 GT's are a weak card, relatively speaking. It will be suitable for watching movies, and other light usage, but will slow to a crawl with any kind of serious gaming.

Here's a chart that shows the performance of various video cards, and how they rate against each other:,795.html

You can see that when it comes to graphics performance, you get what you pay for.

That all depends on a few things.... what does he want to do with the video card? Just regular display? Or does he want dvd playback, some gaming or all the bells and whistles? The other thing is, is he willing to buy online? Or buy locally? You can find a lot of really good deals on the internet. Check

Hello all.
I am upgrading the components in my computer gradually to suit its needs for gaming. So far I have upgraded the RAM and I am about to buy a new processor (3.0GHz) At the moment I have an Nvidia GeForce 210, which lags abit during gameplay.

The next thing I am looking for is a graphics card, that will play games like:
Dead Rising 2
World of Tanks
at decent graphics, and no lag.

What graphics card should I be looking for?

Also, I currently have 3 19" monitors, which my 210 can only support displaying 2. What graphics card would I need to have a triple monitor setup? (To add, a triple monitor setup is not essential, just for a bit of fun )

Just incase anybody is wondering; I don't want to buy a new PC all together because it's cheaper to buy the components I need separately. Even if you may think that statement is wrong, I just dont want to get a new PC and have to transfer everything over, when I have a huge games collection!

Thank you in advance!

Hi, I'm running Windows 7 with an ATI 4870HD... I also have a Asus sound card which needs one of the outputs of the 4870 to combine video with sound and output to my AV. For some reason I cant get a decent picture quality on either my LCD or monitor whilst running through my Sony AV.

So I want to stick a second graphics card in to run my second monitor off.

My AGP slot is taken by the 4870, but I have a couple of remaining PCI slots
(Three 32-bit PCI v2.3 master PCI bus slots)

Can anyone suggest a suitable card that will either use the same drivers as my 4870 (catalyst v10) or one that will use different drivers that wont conflict with the ATI and run on Windows 7.

I only need it to run my main monitor.. games, films etc will run on my LCD TV

Answer:Cheap second graphics card advice please

julesb, welcome to the forums.

Filling this out,

would help a lot (make and model numbers as well if you can). Would also help to know the model numbers of the AV and TV, as well as what connections are being used.

P.S. Your HD 4870 is more than capable of sending audio on its own when using a HDMI connection. Also you don't need a second video card for a second monitor as again your current card is more than capable of running 2 displays.

I really haven't looked around for a new card yet. My experience rating of 3.8 is basically because of my crappy Intel chipset. I want to do some lite gaming on this thing, and I think I may be restricted to 2 gigs do to my processor. All of the necessary information is in my signature for suggestions. I don't intend on this being a real "gaming machine". But I do want to play a few online games without having to worry about incompatibility. I can get on 2nd life without too many problems. I can also play Aces high without problem as well. I just want to go a step further.

I'm in need of an upgrade to my graphics card, since my 3 year old ATI Radeon HD 5670 has died on me just recently. I'm currently using some old GeForce card a friend lent me, and I'm having trouble running GTA San Andreas on medium settings with it, so an upgrade would be much appreciated. My price range is not particularly vast: 0-100 bucks (hey, I'm a cheapskate, sue me!) So, what are my options?

Just so you know, I'm not into torturing my PC with games like Diablo 3 and Prototype 2. But I'd at least like to play Dirt 3 and GTA IV on highest settings.

I'm currently looking into some ATI cards, specifically HD6670. Do you guys think it's a good choice? I mean, it is a GDDR5 card, and a 2GB version (but with DDR3, I think) is available on Newegg. But my friend tells me I shouldn't get an ATI card again, and should go for Nvidia. I respect that, but I just don't see much of a difference between two brands, except for the price, where ATI looks cheaper.

I think I've already uploaded my system specs to this website, but if you need something else, hit me up in this thread.

Oh yeah, my PCU is capable of 500w, if I remember correctly. Or it could be 450, or maybe 550, I forget, but it's around that number. Hope it helps.

PS: Please don't give me crap like "GEFORCE 4 LIFE, MAN!" I'd like a professional to tell me exactly what I need.

Answer:Need an affordable (cheap) graphics card with enough umph.

I'm not a Professional and not a fanboy of either side. I have a 6950 and a GTX670. But newegg's list of gpu cards for under $100 Lists quite a few. Probably the best for the reviews is the HIS 6750 1GB. I've never used that brand but it gets very good reviews. You take a look and decide.

Nope, with laptops you pretty much get what you buy. And there's a reason laptops with good graphics cards cost more; the graphics cards cost a lot, the laptops need more cooling, and need to provide more room.

I was pointed in the direction of a blog posting talking about the use of GPU processors to launch brute-force attacks on passwords. GPUs are extremely good at this sort of workload, and the price/performance ratio has changed dramatically over the past few years. What might have seemed impossible even 36 months ago is now perfectly do-able on your desktop computer.

In this report, the author takes a fairly standard Radeon 5770 graphics card (you?ll find it on our A-List under Value Graphics Card), and uses a free tool called ighashgpu to run the brute-force password cracking tools on the GPU. To provide a comparison point with the capabilities of a standard desktop CPU, he uses a tool called ?Cain & Abel?.

Answer:How a cheap graphics card could crack your password in under a second

Good article, although the idea of using the GPU for computing and cracking passwords is not new. One small mention: this works great if you have direct access to the computer (or the file containing the hashed password). Over the Internet there are considerable slowdowns due to network latency so using complex passwords for your online accounts is still recommended.

Good day All
I own a Toshiba Qosmio X870-F746 and a while ago the screen stopped going on so I sent it in to get diagnosed. They tested everything and said that it's a faulty graphics card. So they are busy getting prices for me, but I know it's going to cost me a fortune. So here are my questions:

I've seen on the web and YouTube that people are putting their graphics cards in ovens to melt connections and in some cases it worked. Would you suggest this?
The laptop takes the Nvidia GeForce GTX 670M. I don't do games anymore, so I don't really need an expensive graphics card like that. Will there be a cheap alternative that fits the laptop? Is there like standard shapes and size of graphics cards for laptops or does the manufacturer change the size and shape to fit the specific laptop?
Is it perhaps possible to bypass the graphics card? Shouldn't the motherboard have an on-board GPU like desktop computers? Most desktop computers don't need a graphics card.

Many thanks

1) get the system ram up to 4 GB
2) check your power supply, especially the connectors. You may not have the connections to power newer graphic cards. Then see how much you can support/afford from Tom's list:,3107-7.html
3) Load times in SC2 can be annoying, go with an SSD if it bothers you.

I received the new Thinkpad x61s yesterday, ordered 3 weeks ago. I had chosen the Intel wireless wifi link 4965AGN for it, but when I received it yesterday I found they actually installed a 4965AG. This is shown in all the places: the system information, the device manager, as well as the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. I have created screen shots to show the information, though I don't see anyway to attach the files here. I called Lenovo yesterday as soon as I found the problem. I thought the two obvious solutions would be to either send back the laptop for replacement of the wireless card by IBM/Lenovo, or to have them send me the correct card and I replace it by myself. Since the model is still being offered on sale, they certainly have the 4965AGN card. I was transferred back and forth on the phone between various depts. The last rep yesterday said they couldn't replace the card for me (why? "because it's just not how we do it." Instead they do put the wrong card?), nor can they send me a replacement card (said it would void warranty if I install it myself, which contradicts another rep. Could someone please confirm either way?). He said I had to either return the laptop for refund or get credit for the difference between the two cards. Neither of these is what I would like to accept. And I find it neither reasonable nor necessary. I called them today again. The rep I got today looked at my order and claimed what I ordered was exactly what I have received! He cl... Read more

Answer:Lenovo messed up my wireless card on my new laptop and refuses a reasonable solution?!

I understand your frustration, but there is a thing I don't get it. By the fact that Intel doesn't have pcie network adapter card model 4965AG. They have only 4965AGN, which is the one you are supposed to get, and 3945BG/ABG for 802.11b/g or 802.11a/b/g consecutively. I suspect 4965AG is typo or something? but this way it's pretty hard for Lenovo to believe you as well. The question is how you can identify your network card then? If device manager really says that, you may like to update driver.I recommend you get into this card properties in device manager and check for Hardware Ids, for 4965AGN it should be VEN_8086&DEV4230&SUBSYS_11108086. If it's really a wrong one, I don't see that you couldn't get a replacement. The worst case is you may have to ship your unit back to repair center, I guess. note: I'm not related to Lenovo in anyway! I was pissed about their service too/ Edited: I was totally wrong. There is 4965AG. It's basically the same one with 802.11n disabled. However, it's not the same part number. 42T0865, 42T0867, 42T0869, 42T0871, 42T0905 : Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (11n enabled)42T0873, 42T0875, 42T0877, 42T0879, : Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (11n disabled) First, you have to check this part number on the box to see if it matches 11n disabled. Then check with your order and it's time to call them again. Message Edited by sipp11 on 01-21-2009 01:56 PM

I don't believe it, below are two links showing 512 cards being sold for cheap cheap. :hotbounce

Anyone know if theres a downside on these babies? (for example, they used cheap ram or something?)

And will they really run games like F.E.A.R. on the highest settings?

Answer:Cheap 512 Graphics cards?

They're using DDR memory, where the higher end cards use DDR3.Also they're the basic version of each card. They won't run F.E.A.R on anything but low settings. The 512mb of memory is a complete waste,256mb would probably be too much as well.

Answer:cheap high/med graphics game ?

Um... whatever...? :confused

That was a joke.

If you list your specs we'll help you find a good game for testing, or a good free benchmark program. There's also a good chance we'll be able to help you find a free demo, once we know your system.

If you don't know how to get your specs, download Speccy, install and run it. Then go to File, click Save Snapshot, and attach that snapshot to your next post (follow this guide if you're not sure how to attach items to your post).

Hi, I have a EVGA e-GeForce 7600GT 256 MB PCIe Video Card which supports the SLI technology allowing me to link up 2 or more graphics cards for greater performance. Now this card has DDR3 memory. I wanted to know if I can link it up with a DDR2 memory graphics card which also supports SLI. If I can, how will this difference affect performance?

Which card?? "A card with DDR3 memory", or "A thingy with a red switch on it" tell us just as much.
But if it's not another 7600 GT you're trying to SLi, just forget it, especially if you're going to buy the other card.

I'm on the market for a decent ati card to replace my damaged 9500 (softmodded) but don't want to settle for its current equivelant - the 9600 as my modded 9500 in conjunction with an amd 1.7 usually pushed around 11,500 in 3d mark 2001 and I can't see any 9600's offering that kind of performance, I'm not keen on spending hundreds on a gfx card but just need something with an edge over the 9600 - is the 9800 se any good?
I'd love to hear your views.
Also, any idea who the cheapest gfx card retailers in the uk are?

I would look for a Radeon 9600Pro/XT or Radeon 9700, depending on how much you are willing to spend.

Ok, I need a cheap vid card that would be capable of supporting a 22 inch monitor at its suggested 1680X1050 res.

Right now, I have a 64 meg Visiontech Xtasy on a regular PCI slot, but that won't cut it. I do have an open\available AGP 4X, but not sure if I should go PCI or AGP.

Trying to go cheap here because I'll be moving the monitor to the new box, whenever that happens.

Any help would be appreciated!

EDIT: I won't be playing video games....just surfing, e-mail etc. etc.

Answer:Cheap Vid card help

The simple answer is ANY,practically any AGP X 4 card will run at those resolutions in 2D and beyond without a problem with only a few exceptions most go to 20481536 @ 85Hz.

If you want me to pick one I'd go with something like a Geforce 5200 for $30,you could pick up a used one or similar for even cheaper at a local PC store which is what I'd do.

I'm looking into getting a tv tuner card, something relatively cheap.

I want to be able to watch TV on my monitor, perhaps play xbox on it (may need svideo to composite a/v unless on card), and record it. A remote would be nice also (well how else would you change the channel). Those are some features I saw on some cards. Is there anything else you can do with certain tv tuners?

And how is the quality/fps when recording the TV?

Basically I would like to know what to look for in a card, what brand, and where I could get more information on them.

I bought this from leadtek:

Much better than my old winTV card. Comes with remote too and also has aerial for FM radio...

Hi guys,
I think I need to buy a new video card, I currently have an ATI Rage pro 128 which my computer doesn't seem to like. When I installed windows xp I was never asked for drivers, It just installed them itself. I can't update the drivers for some reason either. This is causing a problem, I can't change the refresh rate. I can't get a resolution higher than 1024x768, if I do my moniter (samsung 710v) goes black and displays a message to change my refresh rate. Video playback and webpage scrolling is 'stuttery' too. Basicly I'm fed up with this and haven't been able to solve the problems dispite my best efforts.

So I think it's time for a new video card. I don't think I need a good one, I don't play games at all, I mainly use the computer for watching movies and recording/listening to music.
I have an AGP slot but I don't know if it's 2x, 4x or 8x, how can I find this out (my motherboard is an msi using an athlon 2.2gh if that helps at all)?
Will an 8x card work in a 4x slot?
I don't want to spen too much on the card, cash is a bit tight at the moment but it would be nice if I could get one with dual outputs and tv out.

So after all that can anyone recommend a card?
Thanks in advace!

Answer:I need to buy a cheap video card, What can I buy?

Ok, you can try installing everest home to find out your pc's specs.

Most any cheap card will do basic 2d stuff, so about $30-40 is what it should cost.
There's one with dvi, vga, and svideo for less than $40.

Another possibility, you could get a pci video card, they're compatible with any normal pci slot(so you don't have to worry about compatibility), and should be good enough for your purposes.

If you can find a compatible agp card, it'd be better though.

option1 is getting a pretty good evga 8600GTS card that costs about $160
option2 is getting 2 zogis 8600GT that are really cheap and running them in sli for about the same price
now at first i thought this was a no brainer until i dug through the specs a bit and here are the 2 things that make me wonder which is really better. first off the evga runs at a core clock speed of 675mhz while the zogis run at 540 each. now at this point i am still thinking the 2 in sli are better until i realized that the evga is gddr3 memory while the zogis are gddr2 both options being 512mb. also evga is well known and seems to be reliable while i have never heard of zogis b4
so my question is which option will do better performance wise and reliablility wise.
and how much difference is there really in the performance

If anyone can solve this mystery I will be well impressed.

2 weeks ago my very old radeon card finally gave up on me (after gradually getting worse over the period of 2yrs or so), because I did'nt have much cash I bought the cheapest card in my local store as a temp solution, its this 1 PEAK 128MB GeF FX5200 TV/CRT AGP RET [100711VDPK] from Unreal Computers
for the price ($36 to our friends in the USA), it was pretty good, I could'nt get W7 drivers so I just used vista drivers, gave me a WEI score of 2.0 Graphics, and 3.0 Gaming Graphics, so aero was enabled and I was happy.

I just got a new card, this 1 PNY 6200 512MB AGP 8X 64-bit VGA DVI-I TV-Out-
it has a better spec and cost ?13 ($57) more so I assumed the score would increase a little bit but its gone DOWN!!!! its better for Graphics 2.5 but Gaming Graphics is only 2.0, I just dont understand!

I got the latest drivers for W7 from nvidia aswell.

Any ideas much appreciated.

P.S. My MB is pretty old now but I did'nt think that would make too much difference!

Answer:WTF!! Cheap GFX Card Beats my new 1!!!

WEI scores do not really 'matter'. It usually doesn't reflect the true performance of your PC. (my opinion at least)

I say ignore the scores and test it on a game or something.

Answer:How to install graphics card when the existing graphics card in not working.

You could always stick the new one in and boot up in safe mode. Then proceed to uninstall all the remnant drivers. That *shouldn't* cause any problems, but it may be choppy when you boot up.(I've had this happen before, swapping a Riva TNT2 for a GF6600).

Hi for the last 4 months ive been trying to fix a problem that ive been having with my computer.
about 4 months ago I did a major pc upgrade where i replaced my motherboard, processor, ram, heat sink, power supply and case, the only things I used from the original computer where 2 HDD's, 1 SDD and my AMD radeon HD 6950 2gb.

Now ive have the most strange issue where i can be watching a video off the HDD or surfing the web on youtube etc and not long after I start the activity my computer will turn off like if I had flicked the switch on the back of the power supply and then it boots back up again and will run fine until i start up an activity again and then it does exactly the same thing and reboots, there is no BSOD shown nor Dumps Created.

Ive tried many things to sort this out and have RMA'ed the power supply and the motherboard (the motherboard wasn't a direct replacement as they didn't sell my original board anymore which was a gigabyte ga-x79-ud5, now i have an asus p9x79 deluxe). I have tried only plugging in one HDD/SSD and then tried a spare HDD when that failed, i have tried one ram stick at a time and still nothing.

now heres where it gets strange whilst trying to rule out differnt hardware i switched my AMD card out for a very old 512mb, pcie 1.0 x16 nvidia graphics and since then my computer has been running marvelously i can have it playing videos for hours, days even(although i havent properly tested for days) and not a single problem at all.

The comparison you are making between GPU brands is pointless as a diagnostic. The MAIN difference I can see is that one card requires external power, and the other one does not. A proper diagnostic would be to test another GPU that requires external power.

I've heard that the specific PSU you bought will sometimes not power all the hardware it is supposed so.
People saying it could barely power a SSD, or even an extra fan.

My thoughts. Try using another PSU, try using a similar GPU. Use your old PSU and see if it still happens for starters.

I have a multitude(7 and growing by the month) receivers from the glory days of home audio, late '70s to the early '80s. This includes Pioneer, Sansui, Onkyo, Harmon Kardon, etc. All I need is a decent sound card to route to one of the amps via a 1/8in plug to RCA. Anything more than 2 channels is a complete waste, so no expensive 5.1 or 6.1 setups.

My audio current setup consists of a decent pair of $550 JBL speakers fed by 65w each and then 2 12" Adire Shivas each fed by a 350w plate amp. I know that no sound card will ever do this setup justice, especially when I upgrade to some high end Sansui towers, but I want to listen to my mp3s when the desire arises. Anyone have any suggestions with links?

i have the logitech z-2300 2.1 sound system, and it's great. the only problem is, i'm worried that my onboard sound isn't doing it justice.
i know that it's only 2 speakers and a subwoofer, but is there a sound card out there that doesn't focus on being '7.1 surround' compatible?
the main problem i have noticed is that the subwoofer doesn't have the clean..."oomph" of my parent's 30-dollar version.

i have an asus A8N5X motherboard--it has 7.1 onboard.

i suppose my question should be summarized thus: with 7.1 onboard sound, would there be an increase in quality without spending over $50?

any advice is appreciated.

ps. my paren't sound system is hooked up to a sound card, unlike mine.

Answer:cheap sound card needed

The simple answer is no.
The thing to look at when getting a sound card is to check the SNR (signal to noise ratio). The higher that number is, the better the sound quality. The highest SNR I can see for a sound card is 118+dB (best...It will always get better). My card that I have is 108dB (better). general rule of thumb is anything over 100dB (good).

But of course with quality comes a price. sound cards with SNR of 100 are about $30. Then for SNR about 108 is $60-100 (I think the sweet spot for sound cards). and then if you have money to burn and have GREAT hearing. SNR of 118+ is +$200

There are SNR all in between, but just keep that in mind higher SNR, the better.

If you want to get the best bang for your buck, spend around $70 on newegg.

That card would be good for listening to music, and watching movies, but not playing video games.

Edit: I did buy my sound card off of ebay around $50 when normally it was $80-$90. BUT there were a few bent pins for a midi device that I would never use. That might be a place to look for a nicely priced sound card for you.

Answer:Can I put a cheap video card in my laptop?

All that info. And you didn't say what computer you have.
By the way, most laptops cannot have their onboard Video card updated (as the Video is connected to the actual Mobo).

Hello! I'm planning to build a new PC but I'm on a tight budget right now, I don't want to go cheap with MOBO, so, I'm probably getting E6750 and Asus MOBO, (still not sure which one) maybe P5K, P5N i don't know but for sure I want dual PCI-E16 for future SLI, since I want the computer for gaming purposes and video editing I need a good video card, but for the moment, I want a "meanwhile" video card and maybe "meanwhile RAM" but I don't want to get a really low end card, maybe 8400? 8600? can you suggest something maybe around 90-100, and for memory I think 2x512 will be ok in the mean while since I want to get 4x2GB when I have the funds, and for video card definitely 8800Gt or Gtx, so as you see that why I don't want to spend a lot right now on a "meanwhile" video card and memory.

All advice, opinions, suggestions highly appreciated Thanks!

Answer:Good Cheap PCI-E16 Video Card

The P5K is a Crossfire motherboard and the P5NSLI dosen't support the E6750 Processor.
EVGA Motherboard with SLI & E6750 support 2 PCI-E slots at 16X each $177.00 retail 147.00 after rebate

Or if you just gotta have ASUS
ASUS Motherboard with SLI & E6750 support 2 PCI-E slots at 16X each $188.00
2GB Mushkin DDR2 800 with SLI profiles $68.00
XFX 7950GT with 512MB of DDR3

The above is a good gaming card you'll be able to SLI with if you feel the need. Video cards with 128 bit memory bus (like the 8400, 8500, 8600) aren't usually good video cards for games, but if you insist:

I have a $70 budget with an agp 8x slot. Can anyone suggest a good card for my system? Hopefully one better than my 6200 64-bit GeForce now.

Answer:Good Graphic Card for Cheap

Here are a couple, but they are probably not huge upgrades over the 6200 (but at least not 64bit!)

btw - the XT's are generally better than the pros.

I'm looking to upgrade my video card today on my 3 year old computer

Current Specs:

AMD XP 1800
Asus a7v333
256md ddr 333
Radeon 7500 128mb

I'm just looking for a cheap video card at around $50-$70 cdn (~$40-$57 US)

Right now I have narrowed it down to three:

-Sapphire Radeon 9600SE 128MB DDR AGP 8X w/DVI,TV-Out (Lite Retail)--$65 cdn/$53 US

-XFX GeForce FX 5200 128MB DDR AGP w/TV-Out (Retail Box)--$57 cdn/$46 US

-PNY GeForce4 Ti 4200 / 64MB / AGP 8X / VGA / DVI / TV Out / OEM Video Card--$53 cdn/$ 43 US(requires $15 dollar mail in rebate)

I know these cards are probably not very good, but I have a tight budget and my system is already 3 years old.

Please choose one of these cards and/or recommend another card at about the same price range.

Thanks a lot!

Answer:Looking for cheap video card upgrade

go with the geforce fx... I don't know if the radion will be that good I used an xfx card before and it was very reliable... I recently upgraded to a gefroce 6600gt... this is the card I suggest...\/

-XFX GeForce FX 5200 128MB DDR AGP w/TV-Out (Retail Box)--$57 cdn/$46 US
or look here

if u really want a good card and still want to save money, be pacient cause the new 7800 series are comeing out and the 6600gt price will drop.

Anyone know where I can get a cheap computer thats good but it doesn't have to have a nice video card because I can upgrade. But I want a computer for gaming.

So does anyone know where I can get a cheap computer 300-400$$ that maybe has a crappy vid card or crappy RAM?

I dont know if this makes since or not....

Answer:Anyone know where I can get a cheap computer(upgrade Vid Card etc)

Ever heard of "Barebones Sytems", these are readily available from most online hardware shops. Check to compare prices and go from there. That is assuming you are familiar with software installation, including Operating systems and accompanying drivers. These can be the cheapest solutions, but may require more work. Good luck. Be careful and research any purchase you may want to make, and be mindful of who you buy from.

I have a P4 3.06Ghz and would like help in adding a sound card. Having a dedicated audio card has its advantages and the most important being the CPU has less work to do. This will help me gain a few of the CPU's power and thus improve gaming somewhat :suspiciou. Don't play games on the PC much any more but when I do its games like CnC, AoE, Team Fortress, Battlefield and so would like to juice the CPU to the max . Don't want to the card to be more than 45 US dollars and only will be using 2 speakers so it can be any.1 I don't care. Any recommendations will be truly appreciated.

Also is there any truth to that when having a dedicated sound card one can hear more and further than compared to an on-board sound card.

Answer:Cheap Good Audio Card

so less 'cluttered' kitchen more 'defined' sounds

To create true definition with two speakers is not really going to happen (that's not saying that stereo is poohfar) you can buy cheap 'depth of sound' by adding a small SUB woofer :approve:
I bought a second hand card there are quite a few still out there Creative Sound BlasterLive for the same reason that you stated and coupled with the sub woofer have a better listening pleasure!. It was never intended to be as good as my Micro HiFi (it has only two speakers by the way) but with the small money spent I believe it is good enough. :slurp:

I am getting a new monitor for my computer and am giving my current one to my dad as a second monitor for his computer. However he has integrated gfx and only supports one monitor. I was going to put my old geforce4 ti4200 in but it is nowhere to be found which sucks. So now I need a good cheap idea for a video card with dual monitor capability. It just has to be powerful enough to watch an online tv station on one monitor while working on the other. I was hoping to spend under 40$ canadian.

I am leaning to 4meg due to price, but is it really going to make that big of difference over the stock card I have now?

Hi, I will soon be getting a new video card in my PC, and I need some help deciding which specific card to get.

PC Specifications:
HP Desktop PC (a1730n)
15' Sony LCD Monitor (1024x768)
Nvidia 6150LE (Integrated P.O.S.)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (2.4GHz Each Core ~ 5.8GHz?)
300W Generic PSU

As you see up there, I don't use a 30' inch LCD TV as a monitor. I'm not going to change my monitor anytime soon. 2GB of RAM and my processor are actually good. The only thing wrong about my computer is the 6150LE.

I need a card that can run games like F.E.A.R., BF2, etc. with max settings on a 1024x768 resolution. It has to be in the GeForce 8 series. I definitely don't want the 8800 Ultra. It's not necessary. Won't run SLi because I only have one PCIe x16 slot and a waste of money. I have a crappy power supply (300W). I can get a new one on Please tell me a recommended PSU to go along with your recommended card. I heard about the XFX 8600GT (here) which runs on the mobo itself so that looked great! But can it run games well? Do the GTX or the XXX versions beat the crap out of the card I looked at? Newegg is awesome...

1. Plays most games on max settings (AA/AF, Detail, etc.)
2. GeForce 8 series

Answer:Which GeForce 8 series card should I get? And a Cheap, Reliable PSU to Go with It?

If you're going for quality, and you aren't willing to splurge on the 8800 Series, then don't push for Max settings. Hardly any of us can max on FEAR. Maybe 3% of us. You are running 1024x768 on a screen the size of a Cap'n Crunch box, instead of a higher resolution on a loverly 52" plasma, so you might just be able to, but don't worry if you aren't.

Not to mention you're running an HP (Hardly Passable) setup. Frankly I don't see why you would upgrade on that, but if you really want to, you can.

The 8600 Series, all of them, have only one advantage over the cheaper 7900s: the ability to run DX10. And if that's why you're raving about the 8-Series, don't bother. The quality of the DX10 they run just isn't worth the money right now. It's like varnishing a bamboo stool, really.

For my money, as little of it as there is, this is the setup you want:
nVidia 7900GT
Apevia 520W (ATX Form Factor)

Hi folks, I've got a weird question.

I've got a pair of old Micosoft Sidewinder gamepads that only plug into the game port in sound cards (no USB). Unfortunately, my current Dell computer (Dimension 2400) does not have a game port. As a matter of fact, I don't know that any computers come with game ports nowadays.

Since I really like my Sidewinders, is there anything wrong with getting a $10 sound card (I saw a $7.50 one on Newegg) just so I can use that game port? Why spend $40 on 2 new gamepads if I can spend $10 and use my old ones?

My computer uses integrated sound, so wouldn't any PCI sound card be an improvement? It's not like I listen to music on my computer, or anything. The only time I turn on the speakers is to watch the occasional anime or play games.

I'm not a hardcore gamer either, so the volume is always turned way down anyway.

My main concerns are 2 things:

Will a faulty sound card damage my computer? I've rarely had a computer component fail on me before.
Will a cheap card sound incredibly awful?

Answer:Really cheap sound card for game pads

A cheap sound card will damage only one thing, your ears!

Hi, I have a dell and the sound card died. I need a cheap replacement. The only thing the computer's sound is used for is when friends are over and we want to game. The card needs to be cheap, but I don't need anything great; as long as you can hear your environment semi-decently.

I don't know much about sound card specs, so:
Will either of these cheap ones be good enough:
$7.49 - - Has alot of reviews, but to me this one looks better:
$9.99 - - It only has three reviews (2 of them just complained that it didn't work),
To me, the middle one looks the same as:
$27.99 -

To me, the middle one looks pretty good for it's price, the only difference I see is 5.1 channels vs 7.1. I only need 2.

Once again, I don't really know what any of those specs mean; I'd like to see what other people think.

Are those USB sound things any good?

-Thank you for your time.

Alright I had to replace my no name computer card recently due to the fact that it was invisible to linux. So I bought a Sound Blaster, the industry standard right? Should work

Well Linux loves it

Windows hates it
Everytime I try and install the drivers given to me with the card the machine freezes. Ditto if I try and retrieve them from else where. The basic general fault error I keep getting has to do with Microsoft not reading a digital signature from the card. And since it doesn't have the signature the card is dead to windows.

EDIT: Almost forgot.

I can put windows xp on it, if that might give it a speed boost for games. But i really wanted to know how much more powerful is the 5200fx than the old t200 ive heard that just because they are older cards that doesnt mean it will be slower. Greetings Geeks.

I would like to replace my current Creative Audigy SE with something else. I have 2 games that give me intermittent sound problems. Well, one is intermittent and the other is always.

The first is Unreal Tournament 3. It crackles, pops, skips, stutters, etc. Upon researching the problem, the consensus is that it is a problem with the hardware and that particular game engine. There is not fix.

The second is the HL2 series. It only happens on occasion, but enough to bring me here. I have tried drivers, tweaked settings, etc. with no luck for both.

So, I would like to buy a non-Creative product on the cheap. They had a previous debacle in compatibility issues with my previous card, so I just want to steer clear of them entirely. I basically use my system for gaming, a 2.1 speaker setup with occasional headphone use. I don't need hi-fi.

Any suggestions? I want to keep it as cheap as possible. I am running Vista. Thanks for any input.

Answer:Good Cheap Sound Card Replacement For Audigy ?

Have you researched to see if there is a problem with the creative SoundBlaster. as they can be purchased from as little as 35 (OEM), and they are really good cards.

ASUS GT240 graphics card "ERROR CAN NOT FIND GRAPHICS CARD" Can anyone help me with this error message? I can hear the windows startup sound but it shows no display so i plugged the cable into the motherboad and an error box opend wich stated "ERROR CAN NOT FIND GRAPHICS CARD" with no additional information. I searched online and found that asus smart doctor can cause this and they recommend that you uninstall and reinstall the drivers to fix this problem but the pc is not picking up the graphics card to reinstall all the needed drivers. I also found people with the same problem and after they did a clean install of windows7/vista and all the drivers the error box still appeared. Does anyone know how to resolve this problem? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the PCIe set as first to initialize in the BIOS? Also, have you tried the card in another slot on the MoBo? Have you tried cleaning out the slot with canned air? Have you tried using a pencil eraser to gently clean the contacts in the GPU where it plugs into the PCIe?

And please, thoroughly fill out your System Specs by clicking on the tab under your post.
