Preferred Solution: Maxtor one touch

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Maxtor one touch

If your talking back up / copy using Maxblast4 for windows then the answer is yes.

Question: Maxtor One Touch

I use the support software. For whatever reason the program seems to be loading every time that I boot. Along the bottom of my screen I see the icon with Maxtor OneTouch next to it. Neither a left or a right click seems to phase it? How do I just make it go away?

Answer:Maxtor One Touch

dp,

This recommendation assumes you're using XP or Vista.

I'm not personally familiar with this software, but you can usually use msconfig to stop programs from loading automatically on startup if there isn't any other way.

Click <Start><Run>, type ,msconfig> (no carats) in the dialog box. Click on the Startup tab. Find the Maxtor program. Uncheck the box. Re-boot. If that doesn't work, you should check the software documentation.

Hi, I cannot access my Maxtor One Touch External hard drive anymore. When I push the One touch button I get the following message:"From Retrospect Express:Script "MaxtorOneTouch" failed during automatic execution,error-1102 (drive missing/unavailable).Please launch Retrospect Express and check the log for details." My computer "sees" the drive it shows up in My Computer as drive :F. It also shows up in the Device Manager option as well as when I right click on "Manage" in My Computer and double click on Disk Management. When I try to click on local disk F: I get the following error message "F:\ is not accessible.Access is denied." with an OK button under the text. I have noticed that at one time it never used to say "local disk F:" I think it used to say F:\"Maxtor OneTouch" but I can't be certain. Any way to "open" the hard drive with out having to reformat and losing some precious data? And for those I'm certain who will ask: yes I've tried to uninstall and re-install the drivers with no success. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Question: Maxtor One Touch

My Maxtor external drive finally failed completely so I uninstalled the software (or so I thought as I cannot find any traces of it remaining). However, every few minutes - sometimes seconds - I get a warning flash up that states EasyManager not found. Does anyone have any idea how I can get rid of this totally annoying warning?

Answer:Maxtor One Touch

You need to find out which process is running that displays the message, then find where its being started from.

It will either be started from the registry, as a service or simply from the startup folder. You need to identify the name of the process then use autoruns to disable it.

This will help you:
http://www.zen22142.zen.co.uk/Media/man_virus.htm

When the message appears, start task manager, you need to google any item that you don't know and don't go killing things unneccessarily it may stop your computer booting.

I use Mac OS 10.3. The Maxtor is normally connected by firewire. I took it to work and connected it to a PC to copy across my Outlook personal folders. The PC recognized I had a device connected via USB but wouldn't show the hd icon n the desktop. I decided I would need to reconfigure the Maxtor hd as a PC/MAC drive for both to recognise it. When I connected it back up to the Mac, switched it on, there is nothing. I check in System Profiler and there is nothing connected by firewire. I tried connecting via USB but the Maxtor wasn't recognised there either. What can I do? I haven't reconfigured it yet as I can't see it.

Answer:Maxtor One Touch II

Computer Hope is not a great place to find Mac help.Do any error messages come up while connecting to either computer? Are the drivers installed on the Mac (or the control program)?Oh, and PC's are not like Macs. When you connect a device via USB like a disk drive or a flash drive, it does not appear on the desktop. Look under "My Computer", located on either your desktop or start menu. There should be a list of drives. Find your removable drive in that list.

Question: Maxtor one touch

I have an 80gb hard drive which is almost full so I decided to buy a Maxtor One Touch stand alone hard drive the idea being to transfer files from the main "C" drive onto it and then delete some to clear and make space on the "C" drive.I followed the limited install instructions and am currently backing up the "C" drive onto the Maxtor. I did click schedule backup each day. The question is, if I delete files from the main "C" drive will the Maxtor delete them from the backup folder when it next checks,or does it just add any new files? if so will I need to transfer them into a separate folder within the Maxtor?

Answer:Maxtor one touch

"if I delete files from the main "C" drive will the Maxtor delete them from the backup folder when it next checks": Not to sure about that, But I would think Not. My Buffalo Doesn't."or does it just add any new files?": Mine backs-up everytime a file goes onto the C: Drive.

I have a one year old Maxtor One Touch II extrernal USB 300 GB drive. Last evening I switched on the drive just to discover the two blue lights located on the front of the drive flashing together at a fairly fast rate. This happens regardless of if the drive is connected to the pc or not. The drive is not recognized at all even using diagnostics from the cdrom disc which came with the drive. If anybody familiar with this drive can help with a possible cause/solution please reply.

I have contacted customer support with Maxtor. I just wanted a perhaps quicker heads-up on the topic through this forum.

Thank you

Answer:Maxtor One Touch II

You can always open it up and assuming it is a PATA type HD connect it to your secondary IDE channel to see if works. Assuming the jumpers on the hd and if your pc has anything else connected to the secondary or uses cable select and is also PATA.

HI! I was wondering if anyone here had a similar rpoblem or could help me out with this... I had gotten this Maxtor one touch 4 500gb external HD. I had transferred photos etc. to it and was in the process of copying a few items to my brothers computer and the maxtor had a short cord so we had it propped up on a book. the dog came in and knocked the book over and the hd which wasn't even 2 inches off the ground and now when I plug it iin it makes this whirrling/ grinding noise kinda like when a cd won't play in those little kids plastic cd players. Anyhow... since it won't work when I plug it into the computer, no icons, or anything popping up, even under my computer, is there any way I can save the photos etc that were on there? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Hard floor? I had the same thing happen except it was a cat; managed to tip the drive over on the desk in its stand....toasted! It doesn't take much when its writing/reading to touch the platters and put a gouge in.

You can try taking the drive out and hooking it directly to the SATA or IDE connectors on a desktop PC and looking at the drive with recovery software like GetDataBack but if there's physical damage there may not be anything that can read the drive.

A friend has a Maxtor usb external hard drive for which she has forgotten the password, and thus can't get into it. I've checked the Maxtor Knowledge Base and found that the only real way forward is to erase the drive. The problem is that when progressing through the Maxtor software to erase the drive I find that after trying to erase the drive is not recognised. The software stops the drive appearing in My computer etc until the password is entered so it cannot be erased that way.Has anyone encountered this problem, and if so how did you get around it.I suspect that the only way will be to take the hard drive out of the case but that would invalidate the guarantee, and she tells me it's only been used once.Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I bought an enclosure kit for my old Maxor One Touch II hard drive that wasn't powering up when in its normal casing, but it's not showing up in explorer so I can access it. The disk starts spinning when I connect the power cable. It shows up in device manager under disk drives as "Maxtor 7 L300R0 USB Device", as "USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge" when I click on safely remove hardware, and in computer management as Disk 1 "Unknown" (279.48 GB - Unallocated). In Computer Management a box pops up saying "Initialize Disk: You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it" with two options: MBR (Master Boot Record) and GPT (GUID Partition Table). When I click on the MBR option it says, "Virtual Disk Manager: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." When I click on the GPT option it says, "Virtual Disk Manager: The semaphore timeout period has expired." None of what I just said changes when I switch from slave to master to CS enabled. Seagates diagnostic tool doesn't recognize the drive, and neither does Recuva Data Recovery Tool. I installed the drivers using the disk that came with the drive, but device manager says it is using a Windows driver from 2006. When I try updating the driver manually it says the version needs to be 64 bit (which I can't find anywhere). For what it's worth, the drive itself says it is a MaXLine III 300 GB PATA133 HD.

For anyone who as TESTED one of these:

1) DID you get the drive to be recognized in WINDOWS XP (sp2) WITHOUT, i repeat, without INSTALING ANY drivers from Seagate / Maxtor?

2) If you Installed the Maxtor Software (not Retrospect... tsk), just the "MaxUtilities" to manage the drive, DID YOU GET a new device called "Maxtor Personal Storage Driver" (used by the SECURITY SETTINGS that these drives support, i suppose)?

3) Has ANY of you REMOVED those drivers and get the drive working fine? (Assuming you Did not entered any PASSWORD to protect the drive)

I really would like to hear from someone with the drive.
I have a One Touch III USB/Firewire.

Thanks.

I have a 120 Gb USB Maxtor One Touch external hard drive connected to my Windows XP Home desktop for back-up purposes. It works beatifully when Windows finds it - but boot up is imconsistent. 50% of the time at computer boot up the drive is not shown in Explorer and I have to unplug and replug it to make it visible and accessible to my back-up programme or Explorer.I have downloaded and installed the latest Maxtor driver but the problem remains. I have also tried different USB sockets on the computer to no avail.Anyone with any ideas on how to cure this ?

Answer:Maxtor One Touch not found by XP

I would assume the external drive is externally powered?Do you turn the pc on, wait for it to boot, and once it's finished loading XP turn the drive on?If you turn the drive on first, or at the same time as the pc, try letting windows finish loading before turning the drive on?

I bought a Maxtor One Touch Mini III recently which worked fine, until......it hung up while transferring some files. I unplugged it and then the problems started!!

Firstly, windows explorer does not see it - nor does the Maxtor manager. It whirrs when plugged in, but then the light remains on steady - no flashing.

I the tried the device manager, where it showed up under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" as "USB Mass storage Device" with a yellow exclamation mark!

When I right click on this I get "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" I've tried all the troubleshooting guides, and re-installing the driver (where I just get "cannot find a more recent driver").

I also tried the drive in two other computers, with the same result - has my brand new drive died?

I'm a beginner at this sort of diagnostic, so bear with me!!

Buying the Maxtor was a mistake as I need a disk image. If I try it with Acronis and it doesn't work, I can't return the Maxtor One Touch. I'm guessing Acronis Drive Image 8.0 should work with it, if I don't install the Maxtor CD, does that sound likely?I've just spent an hour going round in circles on click hereThanks if anyone can help.

Answer:Could I use Acronis with a Maxtor One Touch II?

The One Touch gives you a Drive Image - but if the configuration is the same as my 12 month old one then it will only let you link to one PC.The Retrospect software is very confusing in the very truncated version that comes with the Maxtor. I've posted in detail on this before but the essence - the answer is that the software is very easy to use as long as you look straight ahead and look for the one touch controls only!!!Also i think you'll find you can download MaxBlaster3 from maxtor.com which will probably do the job you want for free - if it is multiple computers you want an image of. For more info on drive image software search this site, several informed threads exist that fairly lay out the virtues of all the options. Suffice to say not all work all the time - or at all when you finally really need to use the image!!!

Hello Everyone,
I've had a 300GB Maxtor One Touch external hard drive for about a year, and it just recently stopped being recognized by my computer (Dell Inspiron 6000). Usually the blue led light on the Maxtor drive flashes when working correctly; now it is only a solid blue light and won't show up anywhere on my computer. I have a lot of pictures, movies, etc that I haven't had the chance to back up yet, so, outside of sending the drive to an absurdly expensive data recovery company, what else can I do? Thanks!

When my computer recognizes the Maxtor on USB (now and then) the Device manager shows it with three drivers. One under discs drives - Maxtor one touch II Disc, The second labeled Maxtor personal storage Security with a sub title of Maxtor one touch security and a third under USB labeled Maxtor one touch II. Often the computer says that it can't recognize a device on USB. The device manager then will show a yellow triangle with the black exclamation point on the one touch security line.. If I clcik on "update the driver" It reloads something and says I have to reboot. Rebooting doesn't improve the situation.

The only way forward from there is to turn off the Maxtor, unplug it from the USB, reboot.
then power up the Maxtor and then plug it into the USB. Then it will announce "Found new hardware". It will stay up until I turn the computer off. Since this is my primary backup, it is a pain.

Maxtor does not know why there are three drivers, and dosn't know what the One Touch Security is. I think that is the one that is blocking everthing when it isn't recognized. They had me uninstall all Maxtor software. Didn't make any difference. Still uninstalled.

I'd be getting any data that you don't have a copy of off the drive pronto! I have no use for the drive/backup software packaged solutions, I prefer a plain USB drive and I pick the software.

I need some help, I've done some research already and can't find a solution.

I am using a Maxtor One Touch II as an external hard drive. I have checked and swapped out the power cord and the UBS cord and confirmed all are working with other devices.

The Maxtor lights up, so the power is getting to it, but I don't hear or feel the hard drive spinning at all. I can hear a faint clicking sound coming from the unit.

Most solutions I have seen on the net elsewhere have you find the drive in explorer or Device manager, but it is not showing up on my computer at all. Alternatively, I can't take the information off the drive if its not even recognized.

Any ideas?

Operation System is Windows 7

I backup my work frequently on my Maxtor one touch; it goes through its backup procedure without a problem and shuts my computer down. However, when I re-boot my computer I get the following messages on my Desktop:In the top left corner is a display box with the heading ?Retrospect helper service? under the heading three messages are displayed - Updating Registry, Deleting Temp Files and Updating Meta Data. Each line has a small box with a greyed out tick in it.In the centre of the screen a message states ? ?System configuration restored. The computer will re-boot when you press OK.When pressing OK it re-boots and all is well. Needless to say it is annoying to re-boot the computer twice after backing up my work. The Maxtor to Computer connection is by firewire. No changes have been made to my set-up. The messages only started to appear a few months ago. Does anyone know what the problem might be?Finally, when viewing the Maxtor drive (K) in my case I get the message ?The Recycle bin on K:/ is corrupt do you want to empty the recycle bin for this drive? I just click No and continue my work, but what is that all about? There is obviously something wrong but what?Any help would be much appreciated.

I am using a new 500GB maxtor one touch 4 16mb cache external HD, partitioned into 3 drives(150,150,and 200GB). Whenever I try to browse the drive, it took awhile until it shows the list of files i have in that drive.

I got another maxtor basic 250GB external HD 8mb cache, it doesnt not have this problem. The file listing instantly I click it .

I am thinking that the new model has the power saving feature or thing like that, so when i dont use it , it will be in sleep mode. So when i try to browse it, it will take some time to response,

For our family computer, we have a maxtor one touch third generation external hard drive. It has been good up until recently when it went down. Not sure why it went down, maybe because of a power outage (???) but main thing, the connection doesn't work. The hd will flicker when turning the power switch on/off and the battery pack type thing has a light on, green which means it's connected. What's up? It seems to be only the USB 2.0 connection that isn't working. And the strange part is there's no error message or anything. It just doesn't show up on the computer

Greetings,

So anyways, I have a 100GB Maxtor One Touch II external hard disk drive. I wanted to reformat it today, so I went to my computer, and right clicked on that drive. I then proceeded to Format > and then clicked start when the format window opened.

After letting it format, it stopped and gave me the error: "Windows is Unable to Complete the Format."

So then I went back to my computer, and tried to open the drive, but then I receive the error: "The drive is not format. Would you like to format it now." With the options of yes or no. When I click no, I go no where except My Computer, and when I click Yes, I just got back to the format screen. I then tried it that way, clicked start and received the Windws is Unable to Complete the Format error, again.

Could someone please tell me how I can reformat this external hard disk drive.

Answer:Formatting a Maxtor One Touch II - Need Help

Good Evening I am not real sure what is happening there but you might try obtaining this recovery manager program and installing it.
http://vaiosoft.com/products/recoverymanager.html
With a bit of luck when you open it you might be able to see your external drive and do magical things with this program.
It is a must have for flashdrives, I don't know why it seems to fix everything it just usually does.
I think it will probably want to go Fat but you can go from there.
Anyway see if it works for you.
Cheers, qldit.

Here's the situation. Maxtor one touch external was sitting on an empty bottled water box in a huge tent where about 50 or so of us were living. I was gone at the time. Some idiot threw a water bottle (not sure how much water was actually in it but obviously enough to provide enough force to knock it over.) across the tent at someone and it knocked my hdd off the box and onto the floor. the box was approx 1.5 ft high. Plugged drive into my computer and got nothing. It spun up but then started making this really high pitched (high for a hdd) alternating screetching sound. once i unplugged it just back to spinning but spinning much faster than normal. Someone i work with has a Greystone Data Systems D101 kit so i tried that. It didn't even recognize the drive. I've been looking online for repair/recovery services but i didn't see anything less than $1k and i'm really not about to pay that much money to replace a drive that only cost me 189 to begin with (around may 05 or so)

Well... There is an old wise tale that says that you can place a defective hard drive in a freezer for 30 minutes (I think) or less. And then connected your drive to your system to extract your data.
Whether or not this works for you you only get one shot with this method. This does not permanently repair the drive. It just gets you some time to get the data off. Always worth a try.. Have nothing to lose if you tried everything else.

Good luck..

Help-Loads of photos and other files on my Maxtor One Touch but although previously used via USB on Win ME PC it cannot be found. And on my XP laptop it appears as a separate drive but I get the message that it needs reformatting when I try to access it. I tried Mediarecover unsuccessfully.Looking, belatedly, at the instructions this can happen if left running when the computer goes onto standby if set to do so for energy saving. Any chance I can retrieve files?ThanksDiane

Hi can anyone help me see the thread below.
http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/604517-solved-external-hard-drive-not.html
I am having the same problem when I try to acces the drive in XP i get the message : x:\ is not accessible. the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
But when it's connected to vista it works fine any ideas on how to solve this problem? Ive ran chkdsk etc. and it tells me everything is ok but it still won't work.
I do have a problem with the usb mass storage device driver windows can't locate it so i think it is something to do with this. Where do i get a usb mass storage device driver for xp.
Shouldn't that install automatically with windows?

Answer:Maxtor One touch Ok in vista but not working in XP

The file you require will be on the Windows XP CD. It should already be on your hard disk:

c:\Windows\system32\drivers\usbstor.sys

You can try to install it by locating C:\Windows\inf\usbstor.inf and right click it and select Install.

On the Maxtor web site, I can only find drivers for Windows 98 and Mac OS 9 and X.

Hi, sorry, first time user of these ext HD...dumb question
I just installed the Maxtor 120gb one touch HD, USB.

How do I know if my hard drive has successfully copied?
I am backing up the whole system on two different computers (one WIN98 Dell, one XP HP computer)
so i setup the hard drive and done the first backups separately on both computers, clicked on copying the whole C: drive
i mean, it says "successfully completed"
what should i be seeing when I am done? just to make sure...

i am also worried that instead of copying two separate backups for the two computers, it overwrote. First I backuped the 98 Dell, then the XP HP computer. I don't seem to see the info for the 98 Dell. Am I wrong?

when i open up my Maxtor F drive, I see 2 folders
"Retrospect" and "Retrospect Backup" folders.
In the "Retrospect" first folder:
F:\Retrospect\Backup Set A" Folder\1-Backup Set A\ --> then I have a bunch of "AA0000xx.rdb" files.
and a Dantz file but it doesn't know what to Open With.

In the second folder "Retrospect Backup" folder, two folders:
F:\Retrospect Backup\Backup copy of Drive C (C)\ ---> with 0 objects?????

F:\Retrospect Backup\Backup copy of HP_PAVILION (C)
and this seems to have all the info thatI see when I open the C: on the actual computer

But I just checked the properties, and it says I have used 23 gb which makes sense (7 gb from first Dell computer, 17 from the HP)

Help!
Thank you... Read more

I have a Maxtor One Touch external HDD 750 gig. It was working fine on a clients Macbook. Then "poof" it was gone... It was no longer detected at all... When I plug it in, it whirs and clicks as if it is working. The light comes on and stays lit solid, But I can't detect it on any computer I plug it into. I am assuming it has died...
Is there any way to recover from an external HDD if it's not detected? I have recovery software, but I can't see it, I can't recover it. Any suggestions on recovery?
Please help... There are GIGS of pictures and stuff that is ONLY on this HDD.

Answer:Maxtor One Touch external HDD DEAD

It could be a problem with the enclosure. Try removing the HDD from the caddy and plug it directly to SATA. If it clicks the same then it could be a problem with the PCB or heads. Don't open the HDD's lid as this will allow dirt to make contact with the platters, unless you know what you're doing.

The drive has to acquire first on Device Manager before you can use recovery softwares.

I have a maxtor one touch II external drive. It has dantz retrospect 1.1 software to backup with. I recently tried a backup and when I used the software, it started, but I got a bad pool header blue screen. I can access all of the files on the drive without any problem, just can't use the backup feature. I have WindowsXP, Dell 8300, 3gb RAM. I updated my RAM and added a larger hard drive within the last 2-3 months. I attached some files from the minidump folder. I also have tried chkdsk on both my c: and g: (external drive letter).

download windows debugging tools, then get software called winternals administration pack........

it will analyse the crash dump and give you the most likely source where the crash originated from.

I'm attempting to connect a Maxtor One Touch Mini III to my NSLU2 which is connected to a Linksys hub, which has 2 PC's also connected to it.

I would like to access the HD from either PC or remotely. I can't seem to get the NSLU2 to recognize the Maxtor. Also, I'm concerned with spin down of the drive, as my network is always on, but I don't want the drive to spin 24/7.

I'm running XP Home Edition on both machines, and have upgraded the firmware on the NSLU2 to 6.3. l've also formated the Maxtor to FAT32 thinking the NSLU2 needed to see FAT rather than NTFS....I'm confused!

Has anyone done this and can you provide any quidance? I appreciate any input!

Thanks, dondd

Answer:Maxtor One Touch on Linksys NSLU2

It appears from this article that NTFS is supported with a firmware upgrade: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSLU2

Have you tried connecting any other USB disks to this device? Perhaps the Maxtor has some sort of issue?

I have a Maxtor One Touch 200GB external USB/Firewire drive. The drive has been working fine for months... well until now.

Windows no longer recognizes the drive under "My computer"
I have checked the device manager, it says device is working, I have checked the USB Hub controllers in device manager, "working fine".

If I press the "one touch" button, then my computer starts the Retrospect program, but that program doesn't recognize the drive is exists either.

I am using USB connection, as I don't own a FireWire cable, but if that might work, I'll go buy one. The drive is humming normal, lights on, but if I try to boot my computer with the drive on, then the computer "hangs" up, when I turn the Maxtor off, the computer continues the boot sequence.

I hope someone can help

I have an 80g Maxtor one touch mini 4 and I have damaged the usb connector into the hard drive. Does the hard drive have a standard mini 5 pin usb female connector? I have purchased 3 new cables, all with a male mini usb 5 pin connector and they won't connect - they are the same size as the female opening on the hardrive. Is this a proprietary usb? If not, what on earth is happening that I can't plug in the new lead? Very frustrating!!

Answer:Maxtor one touch mini4 usb problem

...or something. Who knows? I'm experiencing a missing drive issue at present and have resorted so far to actually removing the 2.5" drive from its enclosure (very simply done) so as to access its SATA out and power jack with a Universal Drive Adaptor. Seems to me your easiest fix is to get a new enclosure. Not a difficult task at all. I'm a novice and did it.I'm thinking, but can't be positive, that a standard usb to mini is 'standard' and will work if the input jack itself isn't damaged, which is too easily done.Cheers,Eric/St.Pete, FLA

Hello,

So I had my Maxtor Touch 4 External HD on top of a cofee table, on and working when my two dogs decided to chase each other causing the HD to tumble off and thump two good times before coming to a stop. Now everytime I turn the HD on I get a humming noise sort of like a small fan trying to run along with a beep every 10 seconds or so. My computer no longer detects the HD when connected. My question is: Is there any way of me opening this thing and salvaging any of the irreplaceable info on it or is it completely gone???? Please help! Thank you!

I have a DiamondMax 10, 300GB External HD. I attached this to a iMac. It crashed.
The drive will not mount to the desktop. In addition the OS cannot see the drive, a problem that has been documented in many forums. In my case the USB is not seen by the iMac Disk Utility or System Profiler. It also does not mount under the Firewire cable, although in Macintosh System Profiler is does say there is an unknown disk with no statistics.

What I have done:
1. It was dead in the beginning so I removed the disk and replaced the PCB card on the back of the drive. This produced a running disk with flashing blue lights in the front. It still does not mount on the desktop and is still not see by either utility.

2. I will install this as a slave internal disk to see if that works.

3. I will install this on a new external case.

I am looking for any Macintosh utility that could perhaps repair the directory on the hard drive so that I may at least mount the HD. Maxtor/Seagate does not have nor support Macintosh with any software utilities.

Any suggestions will be tried. I really need the data.

Regards,

I just installed a new hard drive in my Dell Inspiron 9200 due to previous HD failure. Reinstalled Win XP successfully and was hoping to restore my files from my external HD, a 200G Maxtor One Touch using Acronis True Image. My problem is that my computer does not show Drives E and F (the partitions on my ext. HD). I have tried all the recommended easy fixes, including changing cable, powering down, rebooting, etc. When I plug the drive in it is recognized as a USB Mass Storage Device In "Safely Remove Hardware". In Device Manager, the HD is listed. HD was working at last backup before Dell HD failed. Just connected to another PC with same results.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot from here?

I have an external Maxtor One Touch II drive. I was in the middle of downloading some video onto it when suddenly the program (Pinnacle Studio DV 9) crashed. I re-opened and got a message "unable to locate drive K:"

When I open My Computer I see the drive listed under "Other" as "Maxtor Locked Drives." When I right click on it and click on "unlock drive" nothing happens.

I have never password protected this drive.

I'm running Windows XP, SP2.

Here's what I've tried so far:

1. Different USB ports
2. Connect via fire wire
3. Connect drive to another computer
4. Device manager uninstall drive and reboot. XP recognizes the new hardware, but still cannot access drive.

Any help would be appreciated as I have an almost completed movie project on that drive. Many hours invested.

Thanks.

I am working on setting up a backup system at my parents' office, and short of setting up mirrored RAID1 arrays on all the computers I suggested external drive backups. They deal with many important documents, but no large files, all the computers in their office, still running xp, only use between 7 -15 gb of hardrive space.

To make it as simple as possible to backup their system often i suggested One Touch enclosures, that I have worked with, so they wouldnt have to worry about software, and could just press the button once a week. Looking to buy the drives though I have read that the failure rate of maxtors in external enclosures is very high right now (i personaly have not have any maxtor's fail, just handfuls of dead seagates) and I am not farmiliar with any other external drives that have the "one touch" type system.

Is there an alternative in this area, enclosures wtih the button that can automaticaly backup the drives, and if not can somone suggest a software that works well that runs automaticaly so they won't have to worry about it?

Any suggestions as to dependable drives in the 120-350 range and good enclosures are also appreciated.

Answer:One Touch backups, maxtor alternatives?

I second the One Touch approach. I got a 650gb and it's a delight.

I also got a copy of Acrons True Image 11 and use it rather than the O.T. software,
but that's a personal choice

I dropped the Maxtor One Touch III to the floor pretty badly. After that it had only momentarily beep sound and could not be detected from Win XP. I took the drive out from the enclosure and hooked it up with the IDE cable and power cord, still no luck from XP but only beep sound could be heard. Now the beep sound is gone and I don't feel anything coming from the drive except a bit warm (with the IDE cable and power cord connected).

So what is the best way to retrieve the data? Any good data recovery softwares? I know there are bunch of places that advertise for data recovery but charges a lot.

Answer:Data recovery from Maxtor One Touch III ?

Unfortunately, all the "home user" recovery methods/tools to try and recover data assume you can still at least connect to the HD itself (e.g. via the cable as you tried). But seems in your case the drive is physically damaged... so unless you can find a hardware guru to fix an HD with physical damagei, i think you're out of luck

/* edit /
I assume you used a USB / IDE cable? Did the drive spin up at all? Did you hear the USB ding dong sound when you connected it?

CAn you see it in Device manager or Disk manager? You can open up the device and see what is loose, as long as the part is not from the hard drive but just from the case then you can place the drive in another enclosure and get at all your files.

The light comes on, I hear it trying to come on as usual, but, when I go to windows explorer to grab a file, the error says "The Disk in Drive H is not formatted. Would you like eto format now?" another error I get is along the lines of "Parameter is not correct"

I have HP Windows XP SP2 almost four years old. At the time of purchase I was like the only person I know with a gig of ram, (I had it built). It's running well.

I have a Maxtor (now Seagate) One Touch Mini III hard disc drive connected to a Linksys NSLU2. The drive works fine as I can access it and read/write to it. The Maxtor has a power save function in firmware that allows it to stop spinning (after 1 hour of non-use) and wait for an access command to spin up.

The issue I'm having is that the NSLU2 (version 2.3 R63) seems to be keeping the Maxtor from going into the power save mode. If I power cycle the NSLU2, an hour later, the Maxtor will go into power save. However, once I access it to read or write to the drive, it won't go into power save unless I power cycle the NSLU2 again.

Is there something the NSLU2 is doing periodically to prevent the drive from entering power save? Is there anything I can do from a configuration perspective to fix this issue?

Just bought a SONY VGN 16.4 Lap Top with 64 bit Vista. When I plugged the drive in for the first time, the system asked me if I wanted to speed the drive up and I said no.

Now, when I plug the drive in, it just clicks away and there is no message from the system. The drive works fine on my old lap top with XP. The compatiblity and driver information on the Seagate site is a wash.

Is it just uncompatible or is this some kind of driver problem?

I bought this a few months ago on the recommendation of someone in this forum.Despite my difficulties with the Retrospect software, it appears to work well, and quite quickly, given that my PC only has USB1.1.However, there are a couple of things that make me a little nervous. The first is that there are times when the drive is powered down and yet emits quite a loud buzzing noise (and the vibrations can be felt in both the keyboard and my desk), although most of the time it is fairly quiet. There seems to be no reason why it should suddenly become noisy when powered down - I do not recall it making this noise when it is actually backing up.Secondly, I still use floppy discs for backing up small files. I notice that, when doing so, the Maxtor powers up, even though I have not taken action to do this.Any thoughts from Maxtor owners, please?

I have removed a Seagate IDE HD from a Maxtor One Touch external enclosure and installed it in my computer as the primary slave HD. The computer recognizes the drive and it shows up as "Healthy" in Disk Management. However, when I try to access it in Explorer, it says,"F:\ is not accessible. Answer:Convert Maxtor One Touch ExHD to Internal

Have you formated the HDD? The file system should probably be NTFS, not RAW. Did you use it normally before installing it in your computer, or is it a new drive? If it's new, you need to format it, if you used it before taking it out of it's external enclosure, something else could be wrong.

I'm running a Toshiba laptop on XP with a Matshita DVD drive. My hard drive was almost full, so I bought a Maxtor One Touch III 300GB with both Firewire and USB 2.0 capability, which I am trying to install.   The software appears to have installed properly from the CD, but when I go to the next stage of plugging the drive in to one of my USB ports (I don't have firewire), it finds the USB hardware, the "Found New Hardware" window comes up, I click on "Install Hardware Automatically", the wizard churns away for a while, then says "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software."  I have tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling. I have tried directing the wizard to the Drivers folder on the install CD. I tried copying the USB Drivers folder from the install CD on to my laptop and then directing the wizard to that. I've turned the laptop off and done all of these things again. I've searched the internet to see if I can download the driver from somewhere and couldn't find anything.   I'm no tech, but I've been using computers for years and know my way around most stuff. It's plugged in right, turned on, and I have all the right bits. I've searched this forum and other web sites (although perhaps not very efficiently as it's 2am and my brain hurts), but all the Maxtor and hard drive install related problems seem to be a few steps further down the install process from where I am... &n... I have a Maxtor one touch ext. hard drive that I let my DVR format so I could save some movies I recorded. Now that I don't need the movies any longer, I wanted to use it for backing up computer files but the DVR format must have removed the original software that was put on it to make it function so now my computer won't recognize it as a hard drive. It tells me that the drivers are loaded but I cant access it. I have been to the Seagate sites and can only find drivers to download but I can't find copies of the setup software that originally came with it. It was given to me by a friend that also no longer has the software. Does anyone have any idea where I could find this software?

So here is my dilema,

I let my buddy borrow my OneTouch to backup files on his computer. I get the hard drive back and it now won't show up in My Computer, but it is recognized by the computer itself. The I have installed the drivers and stuff but nothing still comes up. Nothing has been deleted or formatted, so I know all the stuff is still there. I know that there are probably a bunch of corrupt files/sectors, but I need to know how I can recover them. So I am asking a recomendation for a good recovery program and a good format program (something that actually erases every single thing on the hard drive, so even if I wanted to go search for anything, I couldn't). There is too much priceless stuff on this hard drive including school term papers and family pictures and videos to lose it all. I thank you all for your help, and welcome all suggestions

Answer:Maxtor One Touch II Problem...Please help before I pull my hair out!

Thanks for the tip. It shows that it is unallocated (probably meaning it needs to be formatted). I went to a previous post I made months ago and someone recommended EASEUS Data Recovery. I ran that and it found things on my drive, so I know its still there (it was only the demo version), now I just need to figure out how to back up all the stuff and clean the hard drive. Any Suggestions?

I purchased this drive online through ebuyer and as usual i get the rogue one in stock. After a few weeks the transfer rate went down to 1.1mbs.I emailed maxtor several times and they requested I run some diagnostics and send them the results. They are going to change the drive direct, just post and packing to pay for. Thumbs up to Maxtor, what a great service. The whole problem was resolved in 2 days and my new drive came in 5 working days. So I now recommend Maxtor to anyone

I have a 500 gb Maxtor One Touch 4 plus external back-up drive. It is suppose to back everything up every night at 10:00, but it seems to be full. I want it to dump each previous day's back-up when it backs up, but I don't think it is doing this and I have no idea how to change it. I have clicked on every link/button I can find on the Maxtor Manager and am at a loss as to how to fix it. By the way, no, a back-up wouldn't overfill it because the "stuff" on both of my internal hard drives only amounts to about 230 gb. The Maxtor shows as being totally full, however. I have tried to look at the user's manual but cannot get it to fully download (that is for another post).

Does anyone know how I can resolve the issue of not being able to see my Maxtor One Touch II external drive on my recently upgraded PC to Vista. Seem to be able to see the drive on XP Pro.

Answer:External Maxtor One Touch II drive and Vista

1) Dumb question but have you installed any drivers you may need? 2) Do other USB/Firewire devices show up if you plug them in?3) If it's plugged in via usb, try firewire, or vice versa4) go to start->run (or windows key+r) and put in compmgmt.msc then go to drive management to see if it's listed there, without a drive letter, if it is, you can right click it and assign a drive letter to it.5) None of that works, I would suggest speaking to Maxtor tech support.

I don't believe this! I've somehow deleted my installer for my external Maxtor One Touch 4 (500GB) hard drive. It's no longer in the folder where I had it. I can still use the device, but this means I can no longer backup my files with the special software.

I am somebody who reinstalls Windows a lot and was planning on doing a reinstall very soon - so I need that installer!

Is there a way to download the installer online? There has to be!

Or - the installer may have just been misplaced on some random place on the hard drive. But I'd have no idea how to search for it.

Please somebody help me out - if you own this device could you at least upload the installer online for me?

Thanks.

Hi , I've installed the Retrospect Express software that came with my new (very nice!!) Maxtor OneTouch 250Gig external hard drive.... However, as soon as I boot the computer up and running, Zone Alarm alerts me that the following programs are attempting to access the internet... Retroexpress.exe, Retrospect.exe and Com Surrogate. Does anyone else have this problem (if indeed it is a problem) and should access be granted to these programs?

Answer:Maxtor One Touch and Retrospect Express HD s'ware

They're probably just trying to auto-update themselves, and you can probably disable that function by going into Retrospect setup.

The Maxtor One-Touch II (250GB) indicates the unit works with Windows XP but says nothing about working with Windows 7. Will the Maxtor One-Touch II (250GB) work with windows 7 or is there an upgrade patch or? Thank you

Answer:any upgrade to all Maxtor One-Touch II (250GB) to work 7?

Are you concerned because you are upgrading to Windows 7? External USB hard drives should not be OS specific. Any automatic backup software might be. I suggest that if you are using Windows 7 with that external you wipe the backup software off the drive and use Window 7 Backup and restore with it instead. Backup and restore is designed to work with external hard drives.

this guy i know is having a problem with his Maxtor One-Touch 300GB external HD.

The files are corrupted. He can see his external drive but cant access it. Hes running Win2K Pro.

I told him to try PC Inspector File Recovery and when he scanned his drive in the program the root folder turns out blank. Thats not suppose to happen. This is a screenshot.

Is there something he should be doing to help him see the drive in this program?

Answer:Maxtor One-Touch 300GB external HD Corrupted

I believe you'll need to remove the physical drive and connect it to the IDE channel in the computer to use most recovery software.

My Maxtor One Touch 3 continues to work flawlessly, but it's started making a strange "breathing" noise, even when disconnected from the computer.

It's kind of a throaty noise that comes and goes on about a 7 second cycle, with 2 sec. "on" and 5 sec. "off". It sounds very much like somebody snoring faintly, with about that kind of rhythm, and it's just barely audible from 4 feet away.

I'm attaching a zipped mp3 recording that I made by holding the unmounted HD up near the built-in computer mic.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Answer:Solved: Maxtor One Touch TB, strange noise, still works ok

Wow.. thats a pretty funny sound. LOL.

Anyways, back to the problem.
First thing I would get any important data off the HDD. Strange noises from a HDD usually means impending doom.
Then go to www.Seagate.com to download and install their Diagnosis utility. (Seagate owns the Maxtor brand)
If the test comes up bad and the drive is still under warranty, contact customer support.
Otherwise, look for a new HDD.

Hi:

I've plugged this guy up to three different computers now, even my new one...and it doesn't show. Not in disk management, or anywhere...no signs of life.

Basically, I have to figure out any way I can get the info off of this thing, if there is a way.

Has anyone ran into the solution?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Maxtor One Touch External Hard Drive Detection

Have to start with the obvious...sorry...does it have a power on light that indicates the unit is on?

When you plug it in do you hear the "USB Tone" that indicates new hardware found?

Likewise, if you click on the "safely remove hardware" icon on the taskbar, is the device shown there?

Have you tried different USB cables?

Have you thought about exchanging it for a new one?

One day I plug in the USb and the PC doesn't see it.No strange noises but I am told that masxtor cannot recover the data unless a specialist does it for 800 +.The retailier MCM in Oxford is their usual helpless self. What can I do? The data isn't worth that much - only my whole library of digital photos - I can just about live without that. It's the principle of it.How should I back up now and what to?

Answer:Failure of Maxtor One Touch USB3 External drive

Is the drive completely dead? or can it be seen on another computer?I would suggest that you back up your data using DVD discs.

I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 that is working fine using Windows Vista Ultimate on a 64 bit machine.

Just plug the external hard drive in to your computer and let it recognise it as another hard drive. In other words, don't log in to it, just close all of the pop up windows that appear.

Set up your backup regeme using the "Backup and Restore Centre" that is available as part of the windows package. You will obviously need to select the drive that it is going to back up to and the external hard drive will need to be plugged in for the backup. Sounds like a dumb statment but mine is rarely plugged in. I let Windows try to start the backup, which it can't because I don't keep my external hard drive plugged in, so the backup fails, which reminds me to plug it in, I then perform the backup.

Works for me......

If that fails, I see that you were part of another post and have firewire.
