Configure router without ethernet cable?

Question: Configure router without ethernet cable?

This may or may not be a dumb question.MY PC has no NIC card. I have a wireless USB network adpater installed. I also have a wireless router powered up and ready to go. Can I configure the wireless router without a physical ethernet connection between the pC and the router? Both adapter and router are USR. I'm sure I did this on another PC with 3Comn kit previously...CheersRobin

Preferred Solution: Configure router without ethernet cable?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I need my wireless router several more feet away than one cable will allow. One computer plugs in, and one is wireless; so that means I would need 2 or 3 ethernet cables plugged into the router. I have one very long cable so I was thinking I could run it to the wireless router where I need it, and have the non-wireless router by the computer that needs to be plugged in and run a cable from that to the computer as well as have the long cable plugged in and run that to the wireless router. Make sense? Would that work?

Thanks.

Hi All

Not a network expert so need a little help here!

I live out in the sticks so the only way to get an internet connection is through a white box radio receiver made by a company called Alvarion. It's stuck on the outside of the house and only has one wire protruding. This wire runs inside and ends in an ethernet connection. I've been using this to connect to the internet.

So far so good. But now I was hoping to be able to somehow turn this ethernet connection into a wireless connection.

I have a Thomson TG585v8 wireless router and was wondering if there is a way that I can use this? I tried just plugging the Alvarion ethernet connection into one of the Thomson's ports but this didn't work.

I read somewhere that I need to turn off the DHCP for the Thomson router but I can't work out how to get into the configuration menu to do so. If I connect the Thomson directly to my laptop and go to the default Thomson Gateway (192.168.1.254) it asks for a username and password and I can't get past this. I've already tried Administrator and a blank password and I've tried the Network Name and Wireless Key just in case, but to no avail. I reset the router but still no luck. I've also tried going to dsldevice.lan but. again, no luck.

Well, I may be wildly off track but if someone would be kind enough to steer me in the right direction it would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Chew

I recently bought a laptop and wanted a wireless router which would allow my laptop and the family pc to connect to the internet at the same time. We were advised to buy the D-link wireless ADSL2+ router and the assistant said my laptop would pick the signal up automatically and the pc would do this through the usb device included. When trying to install the router the instructions state the ethernet cable must be connected to the pc, which is proving difficult as the phone line etc is down stairs and the pc upstairs. We bought this package under the impression that NO wires whatsoever have to be connected to either computer, just a wire from the router into the phone line via the d-link split box provided. Is it at all possible to have the router plugged in downstairs but still sending the signal to the pc upstairs, without a wire all the way up the stairs? Or will the router need to be connected to the pc via this ethernet cable? Also, if I only owned my laptop, would I still have to have the ethernet wire plugged into it as this sort of defeats the purpose of wireless internet and a portable computer!!! Thanks for any help.

Answer:d-link router/ethernet cable

D-Links are one of a vast majority of brands that MUST be connected via RJ45 cable in order to configure the router for the first time.

I want to purchase a good ethernet cable to connect to my smart TV and to my router for a better connection rather then to go wireless.

I'm used to seeing normal "round" ethernet cables, but I've seen "flat" CAT7 cables that my smart tv requires. I need 20 ft.
I do have a "Lan" connection on the back of my TV.

1. Is 20 ft too long to get good streaming
2. Is a flat cable vs round just a good as round?
3. What does the "cat7" do that cat6 or cat5 do? Why the Difference? Upgrade?
4. Is a direct connection better then wireless, and safer even though my wireless is "locked" for protection.

Do you have any good suggestions on the best cable to get for this (20 ft).

Thanks

I live in an apartment on the 2nd floor. The Router is on the 1st floor. So the WIFI signal is really low therefor its barely usable. The landlord gave me a WIFI Repeater to extend the connection/signal. But I cant place the repeater closer to my room because it needs to reach the router?s WIFI signal to be able to repeat it. Because of that it didn?t make much of a difference. So I have an old router and I tried connecting the router to the repeater using the Router to Router method via Ethernet cable. It worked for some time and then an error would pop up DNS cannot be found. Rebooting the old router helps but it?s not a permanent fix, because after awhile the error shows up again. At this point I tried twitching with the settings but no success. I tried searching to find a solution and I asked on some known tech forums as well but again I found nothing. Now I?m thinking of using a network switch to be able to have a LAN connection on my laptop and computer, because the repeater only has one LAN port. So will it work if I'll connect the repeater to a network switch via Ethernet cable? If it would, can I connect the switch to the old router via Ethernet cable?

I want to say thank you in Advance!

My main computer runs Vista, and accesses the internet via broadband (btinternet, with BTHub5 router).  This works fine.I have an older computer, running XP, which used to have a dial-up connection to a now defunct ISP.  Can I connect this XP machine to my router via an ethernet cable?  I have fitted the cable between the XP machine and the router, but the machine is still not connected.  Is there something I need to do with the software on the XP, or is it not possible to connect like this? Thanks for any help.

Answer:Connect XP to router via ethernet cable?

Yes...In XP you have to setup the connection from scratch in Control Panel...Network Setup Wizard i believe it's called.

Please excuse my inexperience first off. I'm in the process of getting a new router up and running. Replacing a D Link WBR-1310 with a ZyXEL VSG1432 which is supposed to also have an integrated modem. So I'm having some problems getting the new set-up running. I'm sure that it's me not having things hooked up correctly since I'm losing two separate peices in lieu of one bigger piece. The main thing that has me concerned now is that the Cat 5e cables that were pre-installed in my house (which run through the walls to all the bedrooms plus living room) will not "lock" into place in the routers Ethernet ports. They will slide in so far, but won't lock and the corresponding lights on the router stay dark. Are the connectors on Cat5 cables different from Ethernet cables? Or is that router designed for Cat6 cables and are they different? Any insight would be appreciated.

Answer:Ethernet Cable and Router compatibility

They are cat5 which should be the same as Ethernet.
Are you pushing the cables in far enough and you may need to depress the 'tab' on the cables as they can be tight.
Also they may be upside down compared to the old ones.

I have had Windows 10 for a while and haven't had this problem until today. My connection was fine until I woke up this morning. I have tried updating my drivers but none are corrupt and are up to date. I have tried several solutions and looked at many videos and I cannot find a fix. Can anyone help?

Answer:My Ethernet cable nor wireless detects router.

Hi Dez37, welcome to the forums. Go to start, search and type cmd right click on the returned command prompt and select run as administrator, at the prompt copy paste:-

ipconfig/all > 0 & notepad 0 (press enter) Please post the notepad outcome here.

Also go to start, search and type devmgmt.msc, press enter, device manager will open, expand the tree under network adapters, tell us what you see.

Try a power cycle, turn off the modem/router and remove all power to it, turn off your computer and remove all power to it (if a laptop take out the battery) with the power off press the computer start button for a second, this will drain any residual power, leave the computer off. Now repower the modem/router and wait until it acquires all lead lights. Once this happens repower your computer, test your connection now.

HiI can not download a driver for my Micronet sp907gk, as there is not one for Windows 7. I am trying to make my network secure by connecting to the router with an ethernet cable and can access the admin page. however, once there, I can not work out how to enable the security. I have downloaded the manual but it only explains how to do it by using the driver. is it possible to enable the security without the driver and if so how do I do it? thank you.

Answer:enabling security on router via ethernet cable

When you have connected to the router setup, look for a section named wireless settings or similar wording. Now look for an SSID (network name) and change/create its associated Security Key.

I want to share the internet connection from my Arris TM502G cable modem, connected via USB, to my desktop's pci ethernet adaptor. To the pci ethernet port, I want to connect my WiFi router.

When I bridge the two connections, I can't get on the internet anymore from the desktop connected via usb, and if I share the internet connection on the USB cable modem to the ethernet port on the computer, I cannot ping the router. However, I can ping the router from my Wireless laptop. I have the ethernet cable plugged into the first port on the router (the one that usually goes to the cable modem), but I have also tried the first computer port on the router. The router configuration page does not show an internet connection, and it can't see my desktop computer, only my laptop.

The desktop has a self-assigned ip.

The reason that I want to do this is that my router has not been working while connected the usual, cable modem --> ethernet cable --> router --> computer way. It works for several minutes to several hours, but drops the internet connection (I can still browse the network, though). BTW, the router is a belkin F5d7230-4 with B and G wifi.

I am running Windows XP with SP2
Please help.

Answer:Share USB cable modem with ethernet router

What do you want to try to do? If the router is dropping the WAN connection it will probably drop it no matter what it is connected to. See if there is a firmware upgrade and then reset the router to factory default settings. Sometimes one or both these steps will "shock" it into behaving again.

You can't bridge the connections as you described unless you are paying for two public IP addresses from your ISP. And then you still may not be able to because you can probably only get one on the USB connection.

If you want to use the Belkin as an ethernet switch and wireless access point the following is the complete procedure.

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Hi, all

I really hope someone can help me with this before my head implodes. I've had dial-up for years but AOL said they could give me a broadband-quality internet service with a Speedtouch wireless router and an ethernet cable. They sent the equipment through, I set it up on one laptop at home and it worked fine - miraculous, in fact, really fast. So then I tried to set it up on my partner's laptop. Ran the installation software, and it got to the point where you connect the laptop (an Advent) to the router, and it said it couldn't connect. The ethernet cable was securely plugged in at both ends but no ethernet light was displaying on the router. I called AOL and they went through everything - the laptop has an ethernet card and the [netware??? - sorry, I really am a total beginner] seemed OK, ie didn't have any little crosses or question marks beside it when we looked at in in "systems information". So the AOL guy said I might need a new ethernet card. But I don't see how that's the problem, if there's already one in there and it seems to be functional!

I'll probably go try to buy an ethernet card but this has already cost me quite a bit (mostly in phone calls to AOL) and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas, or can confirm that buying the new card is my best option.

I really appreciate any help you can give

I have a LaserJetprinter with a bad USB port, and I want to connect it directly to my laptop using the ethernet port. Since there is no internet at this location, I have been using the USB port.

If I connect the printer directly to my laptop what type of cable do I use (crossover?) and what kind of port settings do I use (TCP/IP?) and how do I set this up correctly?

Answer:how to connect printer via ethernet cable with no router

Hello,

The easiest thing to do would be to but a small 5-Port switch. The newer ones are auto-sensing so you can use either a crossover or a stright through cable.

If your PC doesnt get an IP address from a DHCP Server like a router then you will need to assign a static IP address (i.e. 192.168.0.1). You will then need to set a static IP Address on the printer which is in the same range (i.e. 192.168.0.2).

How to set a static IP on Windows 7 (Steps 6 to 10) :
Setting a Static IP Address in Windows 7 - PortForward.com

Hope that helps.

Hello,

This is my situation, in my living room I have to 2 computers and a switch to allow them both to access the internet. In my room which is about 50 feet away I have my computer which is connected to the router with a 50 feet ethernet cable.

I recently got a new computer in my room and thinking between the following:

Buying a router, placing it in my room and connecting both computer thru that router.
- Any downsides to having 2 routers in home? any conflicts I might run into? Would I have 2 diffrent default gateways? (I'm kind of confused on this)
Buy another 50 feet ethernet cable and run it thru.
Buy another NIC for the current PC in my room and connect the 2 pcs via ICS.
-With this both pcs will have to be turned on in order to receive a connection to the internet.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

-Sorry about the picture.. I'm not the best artist.

P.S
I plan to be using the second PC to install linux on and mess around with some networking. Win Server with Win client, Linux server with win client, etc. Thanks.

Answer:Choose between buying another router Vs. 50' Ethernet Cable

Looks to me like you have a router/switch connected to a modem in the living room-- is that correct? If so, then I might suggest leaving everything as is and adding a switch in your room and connecting both computers in your room to the switch. Use the existing ethernet cable to connect the switch in your room to the router. You can get a switch for about $10 to $30 on sale; maybe cheaper if you shop online.

I did something similar in the past and it worked very well. I would avoid ICS because I have always had problems with it every now and then (it would work for a while and then require some kind of intervention to reconfigure again). I gave up on ICS a long time ago, but you are probably a lot more savvy than me and it might work OK for you.

I don't know about using two routers. I thought that I would someday run an ethernet cable to a small workshop area and, via a switch, just play around with a couple of computers and other OS's. I like to try out new linux os when they are released-- I just find it interesting (and challenging).

I have a Netgear router (WNDR3400)

I have 1 desktop pc (netgear software installed on this)

I have 2 laptops

All 3 pc's are running Windows 7 pro

I need to change the Network Key (password) on the desktop.

Then I need to know what has to be done so both laptop pc's will connect without an ethernet cable.

Answer:Need help to connect laptops to router without ethernet cable

The manual that came with the Wireless Router has all that information. Basically you put the Router's IP address in your browser's Address bar, looks similar to 192.168.1.1 but last two numbers may be different, hit Enter and should open the page to your Router's Setup. You may need the user name and password, also provided in the manual. Once in you can go to the Wireless section to set up a password or change it if already there. You can also change the Network name but remember it.
The manual:
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WN..._23MAR2010.pdf

Then when that is done you fire up the Notebooks and click the Wireless icon in the Notification Area, should show your Router and click to log in with the password you set.

Sounds very simple, however, my PC isn't connecting to my network via Ethernet connection directly from the modem. Re-started PC and modem, changed the settings in control panel>network & Internet>network sharing centre>change adapter settings by amenending Internet protocol 4 properties with manual IP addresses and after another restart, no network still cannot be found and Windows cannot find a solution or identify the problem. Last solution I thought of was creating a new network connection, but again no luck. Modem and Ethernet cable are new and have inspected for damage just encase. I'm using Windows 7 and this was fine until yesterday.

Answer:Ethernet cable or Broadband Router issue?

Who is your ISP have you checked to see if they are having problems. Is it a wireless router and how old is your PC. Are you receiving any DNS problems. manual ip address have you tried setting it to automatic. And have you changed the DNS address as well.

Both routers work when connected to the modem with a shorter cable. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

When I try to connect to the internet via the router nothing is happening and I get the following message after running network diagnostics:-

Error attempting to validate Winsock base providers:2

Not all base service provider entries could be found in this winsock catalog. A reset is needed.

I have run several winsock fixes, they all tell me the catalog has been repaired but I am still getting this error. I have re-set the router (several times) and have configured the IP address and default gateway. I can connect to the internet using my Speedtouch modem with no problems at all.

Hi
I have my business premises and home on the same property (100m apart) and have the phone line and fibre broadband to the business office only. I don't have a phone line in the house and just use my mobile phone for calls.

Recently when doing some repairs around the house I fitted a CAT6 cable to the house so I can get a hardwired broadband connection but now I want to have a wireless signal in the house. I,ve already messed about with trying to boost the signal from the office but the distance is fairly large and I live in an old house with fairly thick brick walls which only gives me a weak signal.

I,ve now connected a Philips SNA6500 router (One I had spare) up to the cat cable coming into the house into LAN 1 and took a patch cable out of LAN 2 to the computer. This seems to working well and I now have a good wireless signal in the house and the PC is hardwired too.

However the signal has no security and therefore I,m guessing anyone passing and neighbours have access to free broadband! How can I apply a password to the network.

The router I,m using only has 4 LAN connections and a ADSL socket. Would something with a WAN socket sort the problem?

Answer:How can I apply a password to router getting it feed from an ethernet cable.

Use WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK encryption with a strong passphrase.

Till I connected my pc(which is a desktop without wi fi adapter) to internet using a ethernet cable and a wi fi router I had no problems. After that, randomly, but especially when browsing the internet, the computer freezes and I must restart it.

I have to mention the fact that if I connect my pc to internet using directly the cable from my ISP ( a pppoe dial-up connection) everything works fine.

All the drivers are from windows update(my Windows is genuine).

What do you suggest?
Thanks in advance.

The Fios router was installed in the closet next to the wire distribution center and when I plug in the cat5e cable (with an rj45 connector ) into the router nothing happens - no light on the router indicating that it recognizes the connection. The ethernet connection in the room has the same result - the pc, laptop and xbox 360 all were all connected and none of them recognized the ethernet connection. I pulled out the outlet plate in the room and the cat5e cable is numbered the same as the cat5e cable on the other end in the wire distribution closet, and I see that they have split the cat5e wiring for ethernet and phone, 2 pairs to one rj45, one pair to the other and left the brown pair out, which sounds right based on what I have read online about splitting cat5 wiring for phone/ethernet into an rj45 connector? But, the online instructions also say that each end of the cable should match, and the connector that goes into the wireless router has all 8 wires attached to the rj45. I would really like to take advantage of the ethernet wiring in the upstairs rooms so that I don't have to buy a wireless card for the pc and the xbox, but am not sure about how to check the rj45 connections. I borrowed a cable tester from my neighbor and it shows a red light which indicates a problem, but I don't k... Read more

Answer:cat5e cable won't connect to ethernet port in router

You don't need a cross-over cable. A hub, switch and router are similar devices; you do not use a cross-over to connect a computer to any of those. That's the easy part.

You are correct that you only need 4 wires for ethernet (gigabit = 1000 Mbps, however, uses 8). If the correct 4 wires are connected at each end, and they are not broken in the middle somewhere, they should work.

I have a D-link WBR-2310 wireless router connected to a ZyXEL P-600 series modem. Everything worked fine untill a couple days ago when I had a power surge; since then the wireless router won't show on the modem that the ethernet cable is plugged in, and I get no wireless or DSL internet. I called the internet service provider, and they told me to reset both the modem and the router, which I did and it worked fine for about an hour; then it didn't recognize the cable again. I thought maybe it was the ethernet cable itself so I bought a new one, and it didn't correct the problem. When I hook any of the cables up directly from the modem to the labtop or the pc the ethernet light comes on and I have internet connection again. Why doesn't my router recognize the cable? Thank you in advance for any advice!!!!!

Why doesn't my router recognize the cable? Click to expand...

Your fine trouble shooting has isolated the problem to the router. It is defective. To try to prove me wrong leave it unplugged for a couple hours and then reset it to factory default settings. If still not working get another router.

By the way, pretty sure the ZyXEL P-600 is a modem/router combo. So if the only problem with the WBR-2310 is the WAN you could still use it as an ethernet switch and wireless access point per the following.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

I've got two devices connected to my DSL modem/router - my PC and xbox, with the modem/router sitting midway between the two in the middle of my house. I'm about to install a Boxee box beside the xbox but I only have one ethernet cable running to that area which is plugged into the xbox. How can I share this cable between the xbox and Boxee and still be able to see my PC on the same network? I've had a router between the xbox and the modem before but it meant the xbox and PC couldn't see each other. The xbox and Boxee will never be using the connection at the same time - is there some kind of KVM-style network hardware that I could use or would an ethernet switch do the same thing?

Hi,

I bought a new router to connect to my cable modem, so that I could share through USB. It's a Netgear WNR2200, the N300 range. I was trying to find out how to set the two of them up, and stupidly followed the wrong instructions, setting the IP address to 192.168.1.100. (yes I've tried typing that into browser, tried typing the old one, tried routerlogin.net and .com. Then I tried resetting the network adapter (following threads by people who had the same problem) by doing the following in elevated command prompt:
ipconfig /flushdns
nbtstat -R
nbtstat -RR
netsh int reset all
netsh int ipv4 reset
netsh int ipv6 reset
netsh winsock reset
And then a reboot.

I've tried resetting the router, by holding the pin in and letting the test light flash for a good 20-30 seconds. I've tried turning it off, waiting, turning back on. I've tried restarting in safe mode.

What can I do to connect to this router again so I can restore the proper IP? I don't have another laptop I can use.

I have a Covad DSL modem and a Netgear wireless router. I had the internet connection set up using an ethernet cable connected to a desktop computer, with several wireless laptops on the network. Now my desktop has crashed (not worth fixing), so I set up the same connection on a laptop, but it is now tethered by the ethernet cable to the modem, and therefore anchored to a desk. Can I reconfigure to set up all computers in my home wirelessly, or must one always be connected with the ethernet cable? The laptop it is currently set up on is a hp pavilion with Windows Vista.

Laptop running Windows 7 no wifi to Netgear48 Router I hope someone can help me with this problem please. A new Netgear 48 wireless router was set up some months ago. It works fine on 2 tablets, 2 cell phones (all Androids) and one desktop computer (Win7) All of these will work without the need to be connected to the router, however, my laptop running Win 7 will not connect to the web unless the Ethernet cable is connected between laptop and router when it then works without a problem. I have tried troubleshooting and this has failed to produce a solution and have then checked out the dependency services and got error messages which I cannot correct and really do not understand what they mean. I am aware that these three services are interdependent and if one of these is wrong the other two won't play nicely. However, these only appear to affect the wireless side of the router as no problems are experienced when wired up. These are the details: Peer Name Resolution Protocol Properties (On local computer)Service Name: PNRPservStartup Type: AutomaticService status: stoppedLog on as: Local System Account radio button selected the rest of the screen is emptyAllow service to interact with desktop blankDependencies: This service depends on Peer Network Identity ManagerThe following system components depend on this service: Peer Networking Grouping, PNRP Machine Name Publication ServiceRecovery: Not attemptedAttempted to start the service and got this error message:"W... Further to my earlier query, I have checked those dependencies again, this time with the router plugged into the laptop, I got internet connection as expected, but the same errors were still there as noted previously, whatever is preventing me connecting to the internet wirelessly, it cannot be in that area. When the previous router, a Belkin, was setup I used the desktop computer as the main one always plugged into the router with the laptops operating wirelessly. I do not know if this is important, am blundering around trying to find a solution without a clue what to do next. Any ideas?

Ok here's the situation:
I just moved into a student apartment. The internet is already activated and it is available through the RJ45 jack straight off the wall. Using an Ethernet cable I am able to use Internet without any issues with my PC.

What I want to do:
- Use my Buffalo ADSL router/modem to share the connection: both wired and wireless.
- Use my router as local DHCP to create a private network with my home devices.
- Be able to access both the internet and the router without having to unplug anything.

The setup:
- There is no way to use a DSL (phone) cablein the house so I have to plug the Ethernet cable carrying the connection in one of the LAN port of the router.
- My PC use another free LAN port.

The issues so far:
- I am only able to share the connection through the LAN ports of the router.
- Wireless devices are able to connect (it even read "Internet access" in the tray bar) but are unable to browse. It can't resolve proxy and always time out.
-When the Ethernet cable is plugged into the router, the router itself becomes unavailable. I'm assuming the connection has its own gateway somewhere else and prevents me from accessing the router.
- I effectively don't have any private network anymore.

edit: another weird thing I noticed. On my laptop anytime I try to connect to a wireless network it connects to 2 networks at the same time. One with the proper SSID and the other "Unidentified network"

Hi Folks,

I'm really hoping that you'll be able to help me out here. I've been trying to sort this out for a few weeks now (should have asked for help earlier I know). The set up I have is a Toshiba Satellite A100 running XP Media Center Edition and an HP Pavillon Desktop also running XP Media Center Edition. I have a cable modem which is a Castlenet CBV600E and a router which is an Encore Electronics Wireless Broadband Router.

All was working brilliantly, for 6 months until a number of things happened. The laptop got a couple of trojans and generally annoying malware on it and the broadband speed was upgraded to 4Mbps (I'm in Gozo, Malta, that's good for here!). Since then the desktop will connect fine through the modem and through the router (although through the router the speed drop by about 1/3, but that's another issue), but I can only get a stable connection for the laptop by plugging it into the modem via usb.

If I connect the laptop to the router by wire or wirelessly then the speed drops to 481 kb/s download speed, 148 kb/s upload speed and the pings rise to 385 ms (just tested on speedtest.net). If I leave the connection then the speeds will decrease until pages do not load at all and the pings rise to the 1000's ms. This can take from a couple of hours to 10 minutes. If I turn everything off, leave it off for a few minutes and start it all back up again the connection returns at a useable level for a little while, then degrad... Read more

I've got a problem with my NETGEAR DG834G router in that it works via ethernet cables with the laptop, however whenever I try to connect to it wirelessly it doesn't show up in the available networks lists. (I've also tried to find it with my blackberry but have the same issue - several other local wireless networks are shown so I don't think it's an issue with laptop / phone).

I've downloaded the latest firmware, and have held in the button at the back of the router to re-set it. I've tried disabling any protection in the router admin pages (192.168.0.1) and this rarely works but has on a few occasions, but then stops after about 2 minutes, and then you wont be able to find the network wirelessly no matter what you do.

I've got windows vista on the laptop - don't know if this makes any difference?

Answer:NETGEAR DG834G router not broadcasting wirelessly but works with ethernet cable

Hi Mate,

Double check that you have the most upto date firmware installed and that it is correct for your router.

I know you said you have already done this, but double check what version the router is, from memory I recall my old one being V4 but foolishly I used the V5 software thinking it was the latest and it caused all kinds of weird sh*t. - So download the latest version of software for your version of the router if that makes sense?

Make sure as a test you have the wireless security set to open for the minute. Change the SSID to something memorable but avoid using "Test".

Download this program http://www.netstumbler.com/ it's free and it will give you more indepth information than your Vista or 3rd Party wireless controller e.g. Dell such as what channel it is broadcasting on, accurate signal strength etc, the amount of noise.

Update your drivers for your laptop and try again. If symptoms still persist post back with the following info

- Make and model of laptop, also is it an internal wireless card? I assume so, but if it is an external one tell us the make and model.

- what version of NETGEAR DG834G is it? Look on the bottom, should be V4, V5 or something like that.

- Is it that the actual basestation isn't discoverable? Check that the SSID is actually broadcasting e.g. Wireless Conection (Enabled) or ticked etc.

Whenever I unplug from the router and go upstairs, I can't connect to my wi-fi. The problem also persists downstairs unless I am connected by ethernet. It's been happening for about 2 days. At first the wi-fi would jump in and out randomly and quickly but now it simply wont connect. Is it a virus or how can I fix it?

Hello:I've been having an issue with my Dell XPS Desktop (Intel Ethernet Connection I219-V Ethernet card).
When I connect this server to my router by an ethernet cable, all other other computers connected (Hardwired or Wifi connected) disconnect themselves from the internet. I get the same response when I connect to the Wireless Wifi as well.
It happens only with this Desktop running Windows 10.
I was told to change the DNS address to the OPENDNS Addresses - I tried and I had no luck. I do not have the Ethernet card or the Desktop in powersave mode. They do not go to sleep when idle.
Can someone please make any suggestions. Any input from your end would be very much appreciated.

So I am considering installing some Ethernet jacks around the house and I had a question about the wire needed. After reading around it says I might have to use CM rated cable or better for in wall installations which is fine except for the fact I can only find that type in 1000 foot spools (I only need about 100 feet).

Do I need the CM or better rated cable? If so, any ideas as to where I can get two 50 foot cables without having to buy the spools?

The easiest way is to run the CD that should have come with the Router, if you havent got it then you will have to configure it manually.

Full instructions can be found on the netgear website here.

Hi,

A week ago, my computer suddenly could not connect to the internet. I was using a cable directly connected to the cable modem.

Since then, I've tried:

1) Added a WiFi router connected to the cable modem. Tried using the WiFi card built in to the computer. It connects but reports "limited access", and there is no connection to the internet, and I can't access the router itself.

2) Bought a new Ethernet card, installed the drivers that came with it. I've tried it connected through the WiFi router's hard ports and directly to the modem. Hard resets (power cycling off 2 minutes) on the modem each time and still no connection.

3) In device manager, both Ethernet cards show as "working normally" with no errors. So does the WiFi card.

4) ipconfig shows only "tunneling" devices with media disconnected.

5) I've uninstalled and re-installed the drivers for the on-baord Ethernet, the WiFi card, and the new Ethernet card.

After reading some other posts, I captured the output from ipconfig and several netsh commands. I've attached them to this post. The files starting with netsh are basically the command entered with underscores replacing the spaces from the commands used to generate them.

I also borrowed another computer. It connects both directly through the cable modem, and using the Ethernet ports on the router. It doesn't have WiFi, so I couldn't test that method of access. It can also connect to and c... Read more

I have a cable modem attached to a network (router, cascaded to other routers - different vendors routers but it works / to attach 10 computers). The PCs use a lot of data/bandwith part of the day and works well, generally, but the cable modem sometimes has outages and its important we get network working again. We have no IT support. So thank you in advance for any direction you can provide.

I also have a DSL line/router that is not attached to anything (except it provides wireless).

Question: Can I just swing the cable from the cable modem over to the DSL router and expect internet to work?

I tried it one day and it worked, but we had very limited usage.

I tried it another time when the cable modem/internet failed - and it didn't seem to work. The usage was much higher so I don't know if the amount of data or the required "handshake" would take longer. or what...can you advise. This is just vanilla internet connection. No VPN or such. The applications can be shut down and reopened. But we would rather not have to reboot the PCs.

Second question would be: if I have both DSL and Cable Modem sitting next to each other - can I attach both so they can both be used and provide back up.

The pc ethernet port has worked 100% up to this point. I'll just tell you what happened, Somehow, the tip of the speaker connection managed to get stuck in the green port.

After reading about what to do online, i opened up the pc and managed to open the back of the sound ports and push out the tip with a paperclip. But when I started up the pc again the ethernet cable wasent being dectected.

I've tried the cable out with the laptop and it works 100%, i've also tried a different cable into the pc and that isint being detected either (works 100% with laptop).

The drivers should be upto date. I had to remove the power supply cables from the inside of the computer to get at the sound ports , maybe i didnt put them back right? What cable controls the ethernet port?

I'm a bit lost, the lights on the lan port dont light up either.

Any ideas?

the only thing i know is not to have them on the same subnet as the regular lan
so on that crossover connection, i set the ip of 1 pc to be 192.168.0.101 and 192.168.0.102 on the other and left the default gateway blank (the gateway for the regular lan is 192.168.1.1)

however, it's not working so far

please tell me where i went wrong

Why do you think you need to lighten the load on the regular LAN? I think you're making a simple problem complicated.

When I try to directly connect my Lenovo Laptop (Z series) through the Ethernet port.  The network connection is not established successfully.  I checked the IP addresses etc. with IPconfig, it shows that Ethernet adapter is set to an IP address that is not the IP address of the provider.  Also it always auto configures itself to that address and some 169... Address.    It appears this address goes to some cloudforce.net or cloudface.net location which has a very wired host name. How do I stop it from doing this and auto configuring to this rogue address?

Answer:Ethernet Adapter auto configure set to 'rogue' IP address

It seems that network card is not retrieving  IP address from the DHCP server. The issue is called as  APIPA(Automatic Private IP Addressing). To resolve this issue, you may assign the static/manual IP address to the network card. Alternatively, you can try to disable APIPA From the Windows Start menu, choose Run, and then type regedit. The Registry Editor is displayed.Navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters From the Edit menu, choose New DWORD value.Name the value IPAutoconfigurationEnabled and enter a value of 0.You may provide Manual/ Static IP address to your Ethernet card in order to resolve the issue. You can also try to uninstall and reinstall the network card driver.

So I work at radioshack and this older lady came in earlier today with a question of a usb-ethernet cable. Now, knowing that they are very different standards I said that such a cable without a bulgy adaptor would be impossible. But, supposedly she had gotten one here (radioshack, not this store specifically)

Am I thinking correctly? We carry a usb network card, but nothing with just a cable.

-------

So then we went into why she needed this and she says shes got a laptop and frequenty goes to hotels (sales agent of some kind or retired, she was older) and has no way to connect. I got "why not just use the ethernet *port*" and she goes "dont have one". And I go "any laptop new enough to have a USB port should have an ethernet port" and she goes "well its about 10 years old and only has one USB port" and I go "well 10 years is marginal for USB anyway, but it should still have an ethernet port"

So am I right on that? I would expect any sort of laptop to have *some* sort of networking capability. I know anything made in the 21st century is going to have modem/ethernet, and likely 802.11x, but before?

I asked if she gets a chance to bring in the old cable (if she finds it), and/or the laptop so I can look at something that old, but Im trying to verify my knowledge. Doubts suck.

Answer:USB->ethernet cable and laptop with USB but not ethernet

I had a Thinkpad T21 (I think that is what it was) that had USB and no etherent, so that is not an uncommon situation.

And any USB -> ethernet would need more than just a cable.. but she may have had one that was fairly small, as the chips can be tiny, and I suppose someone could build one into a slightly oversized RJ45 plug.

What exactly have you been told to reconfigure?

Answer:how to configure router?

I've started your own thread for you here, as it gets too confusing to work problems of multiple people in one thread.

Please post the brand and model of both the modem and router. In general you unplug the modem and router and shut down computers. Connect the modem to the router's WAN (or Internet or Modem) port and a computer to a router LAN (usually numbered) port. Plug in modem; plug in router; boot computer.

You should have internet access and can login to the router to configure the wireless. If you don't have a router user guide on CD download it from the manufacturer's web site.

My router is NEXXT Nebula 300 and my father accidentally threw the box out. I just have my router, the power adapter, and the cable, but no manuals and/or a CD (if the box came with a CD). I've being trying to configure my router without a CD (ACCVENT | Nebula 300 Setup without CD installation)

But "192.168.0.1" is NOT recognized by my browser, no matter how much I try it. And, yes, I'm typing it right. The "192.168.1.1" alternative doesn't work either. I've formatted my computer and all and the problem persists.

Help me! What do I do?

P.S. For anyone who owns the Nebula 300: What did the box have inside aside from the router and the manuals? I wouldn't know because I got it thrown out and I've just lost my warranty because of it.

Answer:How do I configure my router?

Check to see if your router is actually on that ip with this command at the cmd prompt

Code:
ipconfig

this is assuming that your router is connected to your computer, In my setup (below) the gateway is my router highlighted in red. try the ip you find and put that in your browser and if you have more than one browser try it another one if it still does not work. Also you could lookup how to reset your router to factory defaults and see if that works, Usually to reset the router there is a button inside a tiny hole at the back of the router that you have to press with something the diameter of a paperclip for about 15 seconds

I'm wanting to enable DHCP on my router, but when I type in the default gateway I get a page with absolutely nothing on it. When I type in other IP's I get a "cannot load page" message, but when I type the gateway (that I found through ipconfig/all in the command prompt), nothing happens, just a blank white page.

Anybody know what the problem is?

Answer:Cannot configure router

Try pressing the reset button with the paperclip through the hole in the back or bottom of the router. You might also want to download and install the latest firmware from the manufacturers website.

I want to use a Linksys RV016 as a gateway router to the internet for it's QoS nd VPN capabilities. The systems connected to the LAN ports will have fixed IP addresses and need to be routed to/from the same IP address on the internet. We currently have a DSL router configured this way but have no access or info on that router. Since the DSL router is configure this way, I assume the RV016 can be also. Any information would help. Even a description of the terminology would give me a search point to begin with.

Hey guys.

I have the Linksys BEFSRX41 router. It appears that this router is much stronger with the firewall than my pas (BEFSR41). My issue though is that I'm having problems connecting to certain things. I cannot receive file transfers over AIM from friends, I'm trying to run a gaming server, etc.

I know that I need to port foward, but there may be more than 10 applications which need fowarding. Then what do I do? Is that when I use prot triggering?

What's the difference between triggering and fowarding? I tried using google, but it really didn't say to much.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello, first time poster here. I searched the internet and couldn't find a definitive answer to my question so I thought I'd post here.

Here is my current configuration:

WD WorldBook connected to Linkysys WRT310N Router. Three computers access the router (and WorldBook) wirelessly. No internet connection to the router (and no hardwired connection is possible).

I would like to connect my Linksys Router to a wireless internet connection that can then be shared among my computers. Do I just need to connect a Bridge to the router that would access the wireless internet connection?

Thank you for your help.

I currently have one router connected to my DSL modem in one room. I wanted to have wired internet in my room, so I sent a wire to my room through the attic so I could have a better connection and I don't have to deal with a wireless. However, now I want to be able to connect my Xbox to the LAN in my room as well, and I don't want to have to route another cable. Currently I have a Linksys BEFSR81 wired router connected to a wireless access point in the other room. I also have a Linksys WRT54GC router as well as a Netgear FVS318 sitting around that I could use. My question is, is it possible to connect one of those to the cable that is coming into my room and then send out the signal from that to my computer and the xbox and still be able to access the computers connected to the first router on the network? I have a network printer connected to the Linksys wired router, and currently I can connect to that, but if I throw in another router in the mix can I still do that? If so, how? If not, what are my other options?

Answer:How to configure network with more than one router

If you configure your second router properly, it certainly is possible and likely to work. I would recommend simply getting a Switch which will just take one cable going into and give you more connections but a router will also work. When you set up your second router:

Connect the cord coming through your attack to one of the LAN ports on your router; not the WAN port. You will then have 3 other available ports to use (the WAN port which is what connects to the modem should always be left empty).

Go into the second routers settings and turn off DHCP... You should then be all set.

Hi there all,

I have TalkTalk wireless modem/router package that i bought some months ago, (oh no i hear you cry) that's been sitting in the back of my cupboard. (best place for it as far as i'm concerned!)

You see I tried to set it up when i first got it, but i got so frustrated with it, it's been sitting in the cupboard ever since.

I tried again yesterday evening, but ran into all sorts of problems. I spoke to several TT "technical advisors" (yes i actually got through) in the process and i use that term very loosely.

To cut a very long evening short, after about the 4th phone call they told me that i needed to get my Philips (?) SNA5630NS/05 modem router configured.

They suggested i call the help line number on the bottom of the router box.

Now here's the good bit. You call the number and are presented with a message from TT saying "This line is no longer in use and TT no longer supply this product" along with a TT Tech help support line number.

We all no how far you get (or not) when you call TT don't we! It was like i was caught in a never ending loop of the TT theme tune, recorded messages, and far away people reading off of pre typed sheets.

I did get some useful info though. One of the TT support Techs gave me a number to call which turned out to be Geek Squad.

I explained my problem to one of their guy's and he said unfortunately they only deal with the new TT modem/router and not my model. However he did tel... Read more

Answer:Trying to configure my PhilipsSNA5630NS/05 router

Hi Ben!!

I went through the post you sent on the Phillips wireless router that you got from TalkTalk. I do have the steps on how can you can set it up through the LAN cable. I'm not sure if you've already gone through the steps. But I do hope they're of some help.

Here are the steps:
Open Internet explorer and type 192.168.2.1 in the address bar

A configuration home page will open

Click on ADSL settings

ISP settings and enter the following settings

1) Protocol: PPPoA

2) VPI: 0 / VCI: 38

3) Encapsulation: VC-MUX

4) IP address: 192.168.1.1

5) Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

6) Username: need to delete whatever he has and enter the tel. [email protected] once again

7) Password

8) Configured MTU: 1500

9) And then Click on 'Save All'

10) Close current window

11) Open a new Internet explorer page and try browsing.

Let me know if it works out.

Regards,
Irene.

My Belkin Miradigital F5D7630 uk4-E wireless router was working OK on Onetel until a few days ago apart from occasional loss of connection. Now it won't connect at all although it claims to be connected to the internet and it can 'see' BTFON wireless connections outside the house. So I am connected using a Speedtouch USB cable modem. When I try to configure the wireless router in Internet Explorer via 192.168.2.1 and connected by a cable to the computer it will not let me set the Country and ISP name although I can configure the router using my neighbour's laptop. But even after configuration it will not work on my computer. So there appears to be a fault on my computer (Windows XP SP3) that is not letting the router work or allow it to be configured. Any ideas on what is wrong?

Apparently this is a common problem but I'm unable to fix it:
I have a DSL modem (Bell Sympatico) and a wireless router (D-Link WBR-2310). I made a wireless network which works fine, but I want to enable encryption and need to access the router's configuration screen at 192.168.0.1.

Trouble is I can't seem to access it - my browser attempts to connect to it as a web address.

I've been told I need to set a static IP, so I changed my IP to 192.168.0.2 and the default gateway and DNS server to 192.168.0.1. This didn't work - in fact after I did this I couldn't connect to ANYTHING. So I must have done something wrong. Clearly I don't know what I"m doing and am in over my head
