Typo errors due to cursor jumping

Question: Typo errors due to cursor jumping

I think this is a virus behavior. Recently whenever I type in microsoft waord or notepad or fill up webforms in IE, the cursor jumps anywhere in the previous sentences, or highlights the last some letters somewhere and the entire type goes haywaire. Now Also this is getting typed anywhere and I have to delete, retype. very painful. I have Norton antivirus 2005, zerospyware (after reading the latest article in your mag only), adware, spybot and zone alarm, all fully updated. and none have been able to pick up a virus/spyware after a thorough system scan. I am going crazy typing, especially when i am prescribing medicines to my patients. I don't want to reload windows and all my applications again.Pl HelpDr Alok Modi MD

Preferred Solution: Typo errors due to cursor jumping

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Typo errors due to cursor jumping

Go into Device Manager and uninstall your Mouse then restart computer

Hi, Everyone- when typing on a new Asus EEE 1015, with Win 7, the cursor will suddenly jump backwards to an earlier spot in the text. This happens a lot, and makes it difficult to type anything.

I googled and saw this problem for many systems and OSs, but it seems like mainly a laptop and netbook problem. some people have erduced sensitivity on touchpads, or have updated touchpad drivers, or have installed a program that disconnects the touchpad when the keys are being used.

We know we are not touching the touchpad accidentally. you can really perch your fingers way above, and the jump still happens. We have decreased the sensitivity on the touchpad, and the jumping still happens.

We also have an Asus EEE 1005 Win XP, for almost a year, with absolutely no cursor jumping.

Any info specific to this set-up? I would love to hear any insights, before I go into a long routine of upgraing BIOS, upgrading touchpad drives, etc.

Answer:Cursor jumping Asus Eee 1015, cursor moves when typing

As the PC is new I would return it under warranty as this is most likely a hardware issue.

The only quick fix that might work is to reinstall the touchpad drivers from the Asus site. You could also check in the touchpad settings to see what is set for making the cursor disappear during typing, change the setting from whatever it is at present and see if that helps.

Question: Jumping cursor etc

Abruptly and immediately after Microsoft automatically updated my computer (without my permission), my cursor started jumping to the top of the screen sporadically making it impossible to run programs normally. Although my first response was to do a System Recovery, for some reason no matter what date I select and whether or not I do it in Safe Mode, I am told that "System Recovery was unable to restore your computer to the event selected." Consequently, I need some help in figuring out what's causing this crazy cursor behavior...and how to fix it. Below is the HijackThis log I just ran

Thanks so much in advance,

Laurie

p.s. Someone has already told me that I'm running too many programs on Start-Up...but I have no idea how to reduce them.

Question: Jumping Cursor

My cursor has started to jump erratically around the screen. I am running Win XP Pro SP2 and haven't upgraded or changed any settings recently. I cannot find any answer why this might have started happening. I have checked for updated drivers and there are none. I have a track pad and an external USB mouse and the cursor jumps when using either. Can anyone please suggest why this might be and what I can do about it? Many thanks.

Question: Jumping cursor

I've been trying to figure this out and have read all about adjusting my touch pad sensitivity etc but that does not seem to work. Strangely, it happens only when I type a Y. Middle of a word, end of a word where ever there's a Y.

Anyone else have a similar problem?

I'm beginning to think it's a Windows 7 issue and not a touch pad issue.

Answer:Jumping cursor

Hi Jbatl, I have seen this behaviour before and it is almost definately related to touchpad. (Notice position of the Y key is directly above the touchpad and easily gets touched by your wrist).

To check if this is the issue, disable / turn off the touchpad - it should be an option in the (Synaptics or whatever) touchpad settings.

I was fortunate enough to have an option in my settings to disable the touchpad while typing. Solved my problem.

Hopefully that will fix things for you.

Question: jumping cursor

When win7 boots and completes the cursor is locked on the left side of screen, and jumps up and down randomly. Booting into safe mode with networking the cursor works fine.

this is a wired mouse logictech. This computer has been working fine until 3 days ago. I have performed a clean boot and problem remains. This only happens when booting normally.

Thanks for any help. I just found this forum.

You didn't say, but can we assume that it's a lazer mouse ?
I'd first try another mouse to see if it's the mouse itself.
You can also go into the hardware manager and uninstall the mouse.
If it shows more than one mouse, delete them both. Then reboot, and windows will install the proper mouse driver. Never just assume that your mouse is OK, because they do fail.

It's always a good idea to keep another known-good mouse on hand.

Good luck to you,

I have a ThinkPad R61 that I just purchased 2 days ago and I cannot work effectively.  The cursor jumps around when there is a scroll bar along the side, and all of a sudden it will jump to the bottom of my document, instead of staying where it is placed. Does anyone else have this problem?  I started researching this evening and saw where this is showing up in reviews, but no one is suggesting a fix.  I need a solution before I return this computer! Thanks!

Answer:R61 Cursor Jumping Around

First i would update my OS,  then with System Updater the Thinkpad Software and Ultranav Driver.

Answer:Cursor jumping all over

If you have a laser mouse, blow into the hole underneath where the light is. Could be some dust or particulate matter got in there, might not be related to the install . That is where I would start .

Answer:Jumping cursor

Welcome FLTS
Several things to check
Go to search and type device manager
Go to the mouse driver; up to date and functioning correctly?

Run an antivirus scan but update first and make it a full scan
Download and scan with a full malwarebytes scan

Unattach from the internet and see if it happens. This is an important one

Make sure that battery in mouse is new

Make sure that touch pad is not too sensitive; have seen this many times
Type event viewer in search and in the adminsitrative tab look for errors

Try a different port.

There is nothing really wrong with the Scanlog, however you can check and "fix" this item:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\windows\SYSTEM\blank.htm

It's unlikely to be a security issue.

Are you using a cordless mouse by any chance?

And have you tried removing it from the device manager and rebooting?

Question: Jumping Cursor

Hi - I have spyware on my computer and recently got a "critical" malware thrown up - which I accidently "allowed". Apart from the fact that the laptop is now grindingly slow, whenever I try to type anything (even in folder boxes) the cursor jumps all over the place - to previous lines or down several cms on the blank page.

I have read someone else's comments that it is the keyboard, but I do believe it is a malware. I've downloaded HiJack This and got a "read out". Oops there goes the cursor - once it starts it seems to speed up. Would like to know how to track the virus down since it doesn't show in any spyware that I've subsequently downloaded.

Help please. I'm okay with software but don't know much about the "workings"!

Question: jumping cursor

Hope somebody can help.  Have new laptop, Windows Vista.  Whenever I try to type something, the cursor jumps ahead, or behind, what I'm typing.  Sometimes it jumps paragraphs or sentences.  It's very frustrating to be typing, look up and see jibberish where a word should be.  I'll go to correct it only to have the cursor move again to someplace else.  Has anyone ever had this problem?

Answer:jumping cursor

My guess is that you're accidentally hitting the mouse touchpad on the laptop while you type, I've done it a lot of times myself. If you use the touchpad you will just have to train yourself not to hit it. But if you don't use touchpad you can probably disable it.Look for a control panel for the touchpad in the notification area on the taskbar (next to the clock). If you got one you should be able to disable it in the control panel.

Question: cursor jumping

I have an Inspiron 3000 series.  For some reason the cursor has started jumping around spontaneously.  After reading many posts and making a number of adjustments I've gotten it down to two issues.  When I boot up and go to my entry screen, the cursor is "fluttering" until I hit the escape key.  Then it boots to the next screen.  But the big problem is when typing text, every time I hit my right shift key on the next keystroke the cursor bounces back to the beginning of the line or higher in the text.  It only occurs with this one key. I have been very careful to make sure I am not grazing the keypad when I hit that key.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:cursor jumping

Hi there, have you run Diags on the system? And also does the cursor bounce easily when you press the right shift everytime? What if you use external keyboard, and does it happen outside of Windows? This might be something as easy as swapping the keyboard (hopefully)Best regards,Brad

He uninstalled McAfee because he said it was running too many things in the background and causing problems. He installed AVG Free instead. Ever since then, whenever I'm typing something my cursor jumps to another part of the sentence or moves to another part of the page involuntarily. I have to stop and click back to where I left off. It's crazy! Has anyone heard of this before? Can anyone help??

Answer:My cursor is jumping around by itself....

Do you have a laser or optical mouse? Sometimes they can do that if there is dirt or a slight imperfection on the pad you are using. If not, I would then think you have a backdoor trojan on your computer, where someone else is controlling your desktop. In that case, try a scan with hijackthis and post the results.

Hi I have a tablet pen, the Wacom I've had for a while, there's no touch functionality like on the newer models. I use it as a mouse replacement. Windows 7.

The cursor started jitering around the screen. Like it is just spazing out all over. At first I thought it was broken, then I tested it on another PC and it works fine. Then I bring it back to the first PC and the jittering is still there but I tried it after a shutdown and then it spontaneously starts working again for a few sessions before going back to spazing out.

Just wondering could there be anything I can do to fix the behavior on the PC end? Or does this mean it's breaking down and needs to be replaced? I only ask because it worked normal on the other PC.

I've tried uninstalling it in the device manager and be redected to see if that made a difference and it did not.

thanks for any ideas.

Answer:Jumping cursor

Typically this is cuased by your laptop touchpad or trackpoint device being accidentally touched or having a sensitivity set too high.

Check in control panel (under the "mouse and pointing devices" or similar to see if you can desensitise the touchpad. If you have a trackpoint device (a little stub beside the "G" key on the keyboard), accidentally brushing against that is a prime cause.

Question: Jumping cursor...

I re-formatted Vista after backing up everything.
I reinstalled Vista after a complete wipe and found all
the drivers and everything was well.
As far as appearances were concerned.
The problem started a week or so afterwards.
Every time that I am typing, either in Word or when
I have a chat window open or whatever, the cursor jumps around to
somewhere random in the middle of the text and if I'm not paying
attention it screws me up. Sometimes the
chat window will minimize while I'm chatting or even close. I thought it may
be some kind of keyboard drivers I may be missing but
I'm not sure.
Has anyone ever run into anything like this??

Oh, and I made sure it's not me accidentally tapping the touchpad.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

The first thing I would check, for a jumping cursor, is the mouse. That is assuming you are using some kind of optical mouse. If you are, use something like a cotton bud, preferably with a very small amount of cleaning solution (pretty much anything will do) and use it to clean out the lens area on the bottom of the mouse.

Since I have to look at the keys to type, this destroys my productivity besides being extremely annoying. It often even launches my messages before I am ready to transmit them. Multiple skips into the same words render the text unintelligible. It is the same in any application, has no relation to what letters or words I am typing and goes away entirely when I attach a remote KB wired or wireless which is why I say it is a hardware issue. It is unaffected by how hard or softly I type. I have been tolld that it may actually relate to the integrated mouse being affected by the vibration but it just stared happening in the last week and why should have to put up with a disabled mousepad anyways? I need help with my cursor jumping from the typing spot where it should be to a location inside an already typed sentence. I'm not sure if this is an HP laptop problem or microsoft's program. Anyone know of a solution to fix this?

Thank you.

Answer:How Do I Fix a Jumping Cursor

Usually a jumping cursor is from your thumb brushing against the trackpad while you are typing. There may be a setting in the trackpad configuration for this, on my system it is called "TP rejection". It disables the trackpad while you are typing.

Question: Cursor jumping

I have a Toshiba laptop. The cursor jumps all over the place while typing email, documents and everything I do. I read that if I change the mouse properties to low for the touch pad it would help solve it but that was for a Dell. I can't find that on my puter. Anyone out there that can help me with a Toshiba?

Answer:Cursor jumping

I don't know any Toshiba specifics.

Making the touchpad less sensitive may help. If you have an icon for the touchpad in the Notification Area click on that. Else Control Panel - Mouse - there should be a tab with settings for the touchpad.

With XP, especially if this is an "early XP" laptop, the possible settings are pretty disappointing compared to more recent laptops. Most now have a toggle or key combination to disable the touchpad.

Some people have designed their own solution--cut an index card to the size of the touchpad and tape one side of the resulting card so that it can be flipped to cover the touchpad when typing. Of course, if you always use a mouse you could cover the touchpad more permanently.

Question: Jumping cursor

I have an Alienware m15x laptop with Win 8 Preview on it. Anywhere I type the cursor will jump to other parts of typing area, such as emails, and continue typing. This is highly annoying to stop every 1-2 words, correct the mistake, and reposition the cursor in the proper spot. Has anyone else experienced this? This would happen very rarely in all of there versions of Windows I have used over the year.

Answer:Jumping cursor

Hi there
This sometimes appears on laptops and is totally annoying -- making any sort of reliable input almost impossible. It's very difficult to explain this problem to those who've never had it but it almost renders a laptop totally useless.

What 99.9999% of the solution is in most cases is to DISABLE the touchpad of the laptop via either the touchpad driver of the hardware manufacturer itself or failing that is to use the "Generic" synaptics driver and then in the settings disable the touchpad.

Get it from here

Drivers | Synaptics

Note - if you disable the touchpad you will need of course an external mouse -- but I HATE touchpads anyway.

Ensure also your VIDEO driver is up to date and any chipset drivers for your laptop / motherboard have also been installed.

Question: Jumping Cursor

For some reason whenever I'm typing my cursor is randomly jumping without action on my part. The jumping itself isn't random, when it does so it always ends up at the current location of the pointer. So far it has not clicked on any links when it jumps and it hasn't simply moved to a data input box. Only to the pointer location, wherever that is at the time.

I am given no indication of when the cursor will jump and so I frequently end up typing half a sentence in an entirely different location than I started. I've already run the standard Troubleshooting with both regular Help and the HP Support Assistant to no avail.

I'm using an external mouse/external keypad setup and have installed Touchfreeze so I know the touchpad isn't the problem. The Mouse settings are already set to hide pointer while typing, although it doesn't do so. Since I'm not sure what information will be relevent here's all related specs:

Computer: HP Pavillion 17 Notebook PC
OS: WIndows 8.1 64-bit
Microprocessor: AMD A10-5750M APU with Radeon HD Graphics.
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 8650G
System Board: 1984.01.13
BIOS: F.22

Synaptics Touchpad V7.5 on PS/2 Port

Logitech HID-compliant Unifying Wireless Mouse M510
Logitech HID-compliant Unifying Touch Keyboard K400
SetPoint Software Version: 6.65.62

If additional information is required, please let me know. This is driving me crazy, so I really hope someone can help me with this.

Answer:Jumping Cursor

Hello BIOS-Pherecydes
Jumping cursor issue is one of the common problem mostly seen from Windows Vista to Win 7 and to current times, usually while typing in word or outlook.
From what I have found, there is no straight fix provided for this problem.
You may have to try different steps but I cannot say which one will fix it.
First you can try these two steps which have worked on the past computers. If it doesn't fix the problem then there are other steps that we can try.
Go to Control Panel ---> Mouse---> Pointer Options and then uncheck "Hide pointer while typing". If it doesn't work, then try disabling the "trackstick" if you have one..
      2. If the above step doesn't work then you may have to download and run this small program called Touchfreeze

I can not guarantee these tips, but they did work for many people .. Please tell us how it is for you.

Thank You -

Answer:jumping cursor

I've done a little googling for you. And some say it may be a mouse problem. To verify this, change to a different mouse and see if it stops jumping.

Another says it may be the touch pad on a laptop thats too sensitive. If you are using a laptop with a touchpad, go into Control Panel and adjust the sensitivity.

What antivirus are you using ? It may be a virus like you suspect. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking, update the virus signatures and do a scan. If your antivirus can't detect anything, try using a online scan from a different vendor. Because no antivirus can detect 100% of all viruses. BitDefender, ESET, TrendMicro HouseCall, and Kaspersky all have online scanners.

Hi everyone,

I have had my Dell Latitude C810 for approx. 6 months now. I purchased it secondhand. Its been great, but I have one complaint: the cursor jumps at will while I am typing and I constantly have to stop and reposition it. Does anyone else have this problem? Is this common for laptops? I have slowed my key speed and cursor speed but that only helps so much. So far during typing this I have had to stop three times to put it where I'm typing.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Answer:Problem with cursor jumping around

Detective mouse glider, you could disable mouse glider in the BIOS and use optical marble mouse instead for USB. Make sure you use the lower port on the laptop itself, because the upper is for firewire. That's a touch large 15x screen all black you get two optical drives one on the left side if you have the keyboard facing you.

Again all these parts do wear out in time. HP/Compaq has a switch on the keyboard to turn off the glider. DELL it's in the bios.

Answer:Mouse Cursor Jumping

Open Control Panel, Mouse icon, and check your mouse settings.

Also, IF you use a ball-mouse, when is the last time you cleaned it?

Ball-mice have to be cleaned, the rubber ball and all wheels inside the mouse (lint, etc). Just remember to do this with your system off.

This is why laser mice are better, no cleaning.

Hello. I'm new to the forum so please pardon if this is not in the right section.

Here is an issue I need help with: I have a Dell EliteBook 8460p, with Intel CORE i5, Windows 7. It says Dell on the laptop lid but reads HP on the screen. Whenever I try to type any kind of content at all, the cursor simply jumps around, usually jumping up 3-6 lines. This makes coding impractical and sending a basic e-mail or writing a blog post can take triple the time it usually would since the cursor is jumping all around while I type.

I see that the Scroll/num lk button is lit but I can't depress it to turn the lithht off and I'm wondering if this is what's causing the issue. If it is causing the issue, there's does not seem to be any way (that I can it see now) to turn it off. Just typing this paragraph cause the cursor to jump up or 2-3 sentences so I've had to retype things multiple times.

Can anyone please help? Thank you.

I just purchased this dell notebook last week (some of the system specs are below). The cursor is having this really strange lagging problem. Everything will run fine for hours sometimes, and then all in a sudden, for about 10 seconds, the cursor starts skipping and freezing-- no matter if I'm browsing the net or just on my desktop-- and then it will function smoothly again.

At first I thought perhaps it was a memory issue, so I disabled many xp services and virtually all startup programs, cleaned the system, defragged, downloaded updates, etc. I even brought up the Task Manager, but the CPU Usage stays stable during the problem. I'm not sure what else it could be; I'm going to use an external mouse instead of this touchpad and see if it helps, but i doubt it. I can contact Dell, but most of the time I can't understand their foreign accents.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Hi folksi had this frustrating problem quite a while back, on the last 2 laptops I had. In my naivity I thought it would disappear on my new shiny HP with Windows 7. No chance! Its as bad if not worse!Basically when Im typing in forums etc or even writing emails, the cursor seems to have a mind of its own, and jumps randomly to the middle of another line of text, or even off the screen altogether. This happens quite often, but there is no pattern to it. I think it happens in Word too, but actually Im not certain.Quite a lot of people appear to have this problem. Crazy new problem here as I type. For some unknown reason my cursor has been "jumping" from the line I am typing to other places like the find box, the address line, to a previous line in my text. In fact it just now jumped back 3 spaces on the same line that I was typing. At first I thought it was because I must be hitting a key next to the letter chosen or that the side of my palm was hitting another key. Even when I (just happened again) one finger peck, it still does it on its own. Might anyone here speculate as to what this strange behavior is being caused by??

Answer:cursor jumping as I type

Your ALT key may be stuck on. That would explain why it's jumping to menus or the address bar. Does typing the letter "f" open the file menu? If so, you have a stuck ALT key.

About a month ago my mouse cursor started moving across the screen, jumping around when I moved it, and sometimes just goes wild. It is a basic logitech optical mouse with a USB cable. I thought it might be that my mouse pad was dirty and maybe had some reflective particals that were causing these symptoms. I changed out the mouse pad and still have the problem. Now when I slowly move my cursor in any direction, it starts jumping back a few millimeters and then jumps back in the direction I'm moving it. It is obviously the mouse itself that is at fault, but is it fixable? I was thinking that the optics had moved up a little within the housing of the mouse, thus moving it further from the mouse pad. Maybe the optics or somthing on the board is going bad.... Logitech doesn't make my mouse anymore and I am reluctant to go on a search for a different model. Does anyone know what is going on here?

Answer:Mouse cursor jumping around

Firstly welcome to MG.

The first thing I would try is re-installing the mouse driver. Go to the device manager and find your mouse. Select it and then delete it. Reboot the PC whereupon the mouse should be re-detected. It may need you to install any specific mouse driver software at this point. See if that helps.

My cursor started jumping around the screen the other day randomly (even as I type this). Can someone take a look at my log and tell me if they see anything odd? Ive ran AVG etc but I know this is some sort of Malaware and NOT a Mouse sensitivity issue. Ive had this laptop over 2 years now, and no changes have been made to the mouse. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I have a new built spare parts computer with a cursor that jumps to the side
of the screen every 15 seconds or so.

I am looking for a program that will show me what is running in the background. Can someone recommend a free one????? Hopefully it will show the % of resources each task consumes. Perhaps I will find a program that is activating the cursor.

Computer specs:
AMD 450 Mz
256 mb mem
Win 98SE
Compac motherboard
Burner + CD rom
Two drives -one for op sys, other for storage
Note the burner led is blinking each 5 sec with nothing in it

Cntrl Alt Del shows only sys tray, explorer, and this website

Thank you
Bill

Answer:Cursor jumping to side

You can see all the background processes along with the resources they consume with the task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del). You can find out what those processes are with winpatrol:
