Unable to read incoming emails in Outlook Express

Question: Unable to read incoming emails in Outlook Express

I must have inadvertently altered the configuration but even though the monitor bar that pops up when you click on the read/send button, indicates there are emails, they do not show in the In box nor any other box. I have the latest version OECan anyone please guide me.

Preferred Solution: Unable to read incoming emails in Outlook Express

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Unable to read incoming emails in Outlook Express

The easiest way will be to go into OE, tools, accounts, mail and set up a new account using your details from the ISP - then delete the one that is thereclick here click here

Hi..this is a problem that has only developed today. A quick message said that 1 to 18 messages downloaded, but I was unable to read or see them. A relative was asked to send me an email and this too could not be read. I am using Win XP. Would appreciate any assistance. Thanks..Ray

Answer:Unable to read downloaded emails ..Outlook Express

Hi..problem solved. With several hundred emails in the Inbox did not notice that the downloaded emails were randomly distributed. After wasting much time checked on "View" then "Sort by" and found out that original settings had changed. All OK

Some messages received at my email address do not show up in Outlook Express. However, I know they are somewhere in OE because the missing emails can be read on mail2web, a program which simply allows me to read my messages in Outlook. This problem occurs on about half my emails unless my computer is shut off. When shutoff, all messages turn up in Outlook Express. Anyone have any idea on what causes my problem?

Answer:some incoming emails missing from Outlook Express

If you can access the mails using `mail2web`, the emails don't show up in Outlook Express, and your Outlook Express settings are such that you retain copies of the emails on the server until you delete them, then it means those emails haven't been picked up by Outlook Express. Hit F5 to Send/Receive? Are the problem emails especially large?

I use 2 identities for receiving emails (Outlook Express) - one is working fine, the other, the main identity is not. A few days ago, about 10 of the most recently received emails vanished, and took me back to June 21st. The computer is receiving emails, as it will tell me how many have arrived, for example, 3 new messages. When I click to open and read these, nothing appears, and the number 3 or whatever disappears. Of the many emails received today, then lost without being viewed, two have ended up in my deleted folder! I have checked all the other folders to see if other emails have been misplaced, but they haven't. We have been having interruptions to our Broadband(BT cable problems) which are now fixed, and I am wondering if this could have "upset" our Outlook Express and damaged files. Any help would be much appreciated, as I am losing business - and perhaps friends. Is there a software programme you could recommend which would fix this? Thank you very much - Hilary

Answer:Incoming emails not displaying - Outlook Express

Are both identities against one ISP account or are you mixing 'normal' mail with an ISP address with an online account?
Also have you set any mail rules (Tools/Message Rules) which are affecting incoming mail?
Have you checked 'View/Current View/Show All Messages' is selected?
I think it unlikely that BT cable problems would damage any software on your PC; it may interrupt transmission and corrupt messages though. The fact that one identity is functioning correctly and the other is not tends to indicate a setup problem of some sort.

Answer:Read Outlook Express emails- abroad??

You can read your e-mails by logging into your account with your ISP, navigate to the e-mail center and read them there. They can be downloaded later by leaving them marked as unread or deleted when you have finished with them.

Hi. I am so glad I found this site! I have tried everything!

My trouble is with OutLook Express 6 email.
I am running Windows XP,and IE6.
I can receive emails, but they do not display in the
message box. It is totally blank. I have checked all
my settings with my husband's laptop (in Tools, then Options) and all are the same. The only way I can read
the email, in text only, is to check the "Read" box in the Options that says "read all messages in plain text".
Then the text can only be read as an attachment.
It apprears as if the HTML function is not there any more.

Also, I cannot compose, reply, or forward emails at all.

I hope this makes sense and you can help me.
Please let me know if you need anything else to diagnose
my problem.

And thank you so much for your response.
Pam

When using Outlook Express (Note: EXPRESS, not MS Outlook) I often use the 'Find' function to search for old sent or received emails. However I'm not able to open the emails from this feature (message reads: 'Message could not be Displayed - Check your comp for low memory or low disc space'). I have plenty of both - I'm using a near new comp with 80GB hard drive, only 35GB of which is used. I have 2GB of RAM with 1GB or more of head room when running usual applications.

This is a time-wasting hassle, as I need to write down the date and time the email was sent, close the find box, then search for the email chronologically. If that's not the one I was looking for I have to do the same thing all over again.

Would this have anything to do with the size of my Outlook Express folder, which has about 7GB of emails stored.

I am using Windows 98 Second Edition
I have loaded the outlook 6 upgrade from microsoft.

I have copied over the inbox file as a backup, but don't know how to read this.

Having just sorted out one problem I find I have another.
I have just got another PC.
On my old PC when I saved an email (.eml file) outside of Outlook Express, when I double clicked it in my docs, it automatically opened in Outlook Express.
On my new PC when I try to open an email it doesn't open automatically, rather I get asked what program to open it with, when I browse to Outlook Express in Program Files and select msimn.exe (which I think is the right .exe, it just opens Outlook Express, it does not open the email?
Can anyone suggest what I can do to get the email to open please?
Thank you

Is outlook Express your default e-mail client? It would seem that the file association may not be correct. Are you right clicking on the file and then choosing Outlook Express? You are using XP?

After I successfully activated this MS office 2010 on Mom's PC, I had to reinstall the Lexmark inkjet printer software from its accompanying CD a couple of weeks ago so that her printer would be able to print out photos (incl. email attachments, etc) but right after this, Mom told me she stopped getting incoming email (this happened about a week ago).So I sent a test letter from one of my gmail acc'ts to see if it would go thru to Mom's Outlook, but (just checked her PC) she never got it.How can I troubleshoot and fix this problem so Mom can have her incoming emails back? I know this is a software problem not a hardware problem (doing the Divide the Problem). Thanks in advance.__________________

Answer:MS-Outlook - no longer any incoming emails - help?

Only snaffu I can think of is if the printer came with a mailto registration feature to register and it set your browsers mail handler to Outlook Express vs MS Outlook 2010. Check Browser properties to see if Outlook 2010 is still the designated handler of eMail.

I use Outlook 2003 for my emails. I have several different email addresses which are forwarded from the inbox to a specific folder. Until recently when send/receive was activated the emails would transfer without a problem and remain as un-read emails in the specific folder. However now the emails flash up in the reading pane and are no longer shown as un-read emails. Although it is not a major problem I have missed some emails. Perhaps there is something I have activated, or de-activated, by mistake.
Thanks for any suggestions

Hi -

I spent a while categorizing emails and setting up rules (in Outlook 2007). After each rule I created or edited, I ran the rule in the box to test it and it worked. But now, when the emails come in that should be auto-categorized from the rule, they aren't.

Example:
Subject: so and so commented on your status...

Rule: Apply this rule after the message arrives with 'your status' or 'commented on your status...' or 'status' in the subject assign it to the Social category.
It's not just this one, it's any category one. They all work when I test/run after creating it, but they aren't running when they come in. The rules are all enabled and there aren't any errors. I have various other rules, but none are conflicting and the category ones are at the top of the list.

Any help/suggestions would be great.

Thanks!
Erin

I use Outlook Express. for email. I have about 30 folders besides Inbox,Sent and Drafts, and I have made about 30 rules to direct incoming mail into the folders. Sometimes messages come into one particular folder ( which I happen to call Phone and Broadband ) instead of Inbox although there`s no rule telling them to. I see no pattern in it except that they are always rare or new senders. Has Microsoft got a secret limit to Folders or rules ? What can I do ?

All was great on my old laptop until the HD crashed. My new staff guy was able to get it back, install a new HD, back up and restore the contents of the old drive, and re-install software applications. But now I can't pick up any email. I just need to know where to look to find conflicts. Or, if it is unreasonable to expect Windows to tell me this, to know if there is a repair utility somewhere I can download that can analyze, find, and fix conflicts. I know just enough about this cursed machine to sound vaguely knowledgeable, but not enough to actually do anything (know-what, but no know-how). Thank you for any assistance.

Problem: Outlook Express is not able to download POP3 email from any incoming mail servers (the request is not getting out of my laptop). Outgoing mail is not a problem, and IE has a good internet connection.

Facts: 1) All server settings, addresses, and passwords in the OE Account Properties boxes are correct; 2) the error message reads "The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'WH/clay', Server: 'mail.wholeheart.org', Protocol: POP3, Port: 38445, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"; 3) I was told there is a conflict with, I think he said, port 110.

Tried: 1) Turned off firewalls and popup blockers--no change; 2) downloaded and ran all updates and rebooted (more than once)--no change; 3) scowled, rebuked, threatened, and cursed my computer--no change.

I have a new laptop. I set up OE with pop.charter.net, but every time I come back to check mail, it says 127.0.0.1 instead of pop.charter.net. I have to go to account properties every time to check mail. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Answer:incoming help for outlook express

127.0.0.1 is the local host address, ie every outgoing request with this address actually never get out from your computer.
Assuming you're running XP, go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\ and open the Host file with a text editor (notepad, wordpad..). Check out to find charter.net and if so, delete the entry. Check out also your firewall or antivirus settings, since they may have installed a mail filter on the local host.
Hope that will help you.

I hope somebody can help. I seem to be having real email problems. There are some emails that seem to be pulled off the server, I can see the progress in the lower right hand corner of the screen, and then the emails don't show up in my inbox. It baffles me. The odd thing is that I can see the emails on my Treo. I am beginning to think that there must be a configuration problem between the applications I am using. Can somebody help. I have the following setup:

Outlook 2003
Treo Chattermail
Fastmail
Optimum Online

The other problem is that I cannot delete certain emails. Whenever I try it I get an error message that I already mentioned in a previous mail:
"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists restart Outlook"
but this does not solve the problem. Those messages also "cannot be displayed in the Reading Pane", so I see nothing but a blank screen on the preview side of Outlook.

Any ideas?

I have installed McAfee Internet Security. Not sure if that applies to my issue...but thought it was worth a mention.

Whenever I log onto my Outlook express for the first time the incoming mail server and account name change to I presume some default setting.

I change it back to what it should be, apply it and everything is fine until I relog on.

Any ideas on how to get my correct settings to stick?

Answer:outlook express incoming server changes

Does McAfee Internet Security have an email scanning feature? If so, try disabling it and try OE again. If that fixes it, you'll at least have identified the culprit. If you want to keep the scanning, poke around in MIS's options to see if it can be configured to work correctly.

If it's not MIS, do you have an anti-virus program running full time? If so, disable its email scan and see if that solves the problem. If it does, poke around in the AV program's settings to see if you can find a way to configure it to work correctly.

hello everyone,
I have come across something that I have never seen before nor can I find any info on it. First the system specs are as follows:
PIII 800 mhz, 256+ MEM, Windows 98, outlook express 6.0 (with all security updates) ie 6.0 (same as oe).
Ok here goes the best explaination of what is happening: under the main identity there are two email addresses setup one works flawlessly both incoming and outgoing, the second one sends fine but will not receive anything times out with error code ox800ccc0f. I can set this account up on another computer with the same exact settings and it works fine/flawlessly.

Things recently done to pc: AVG detected the presence of a Trojan virus which I used housecall on trendmicro's site to remove, ran Ad-aware and removed some spyware files. All worked fine prior to removing the trojan which was in the c:\windows\temp directory. This is really all the information that I have.

Things done to try and fix it so far:
1. created new identity under different mailbox.
2. renamed inbox, outbox several other dbx files.
3. completely uninstalled (using add/remove programs and deleting registery values and program files not the folders themselves)and reinstalled OE 6.0
4. tried running scanreg /fix (failed about halfway through due to corrupt files)
5. checked for spyware and viruses again.
Note none of these thing seem to correct the problem and really this is more for my own knowledge now as the person who is experiencing this... Read more

A new problem has arisen today with Outlook Express. It started with it asking for the password and then ignoring it if put in. I checked my email Accounts under Properties and the Incoming mail (POP3) had been changed from the service provider, mail.tesco.net to the number value 127.0.0.1.I changed this back to mail.tesco.net and got my emails as I should have initially. But now every time I log back on I get the same problem where the incoming server has changed to the number.Another step I have taken was to install a huge 130MB service pack from Microsoft, found after following this link click here;en-us;309216 when I put in my error code but that did nothing. Hi

Using a netbook as well as a laptop, email from laptop to netbook works fine except when sending using one particular outgoing account. Emails using this account simply do not arrive, using a secondary account they arrive.

Both devices use XP and OE6. Used to work OK.

The user tried to block email from a friend who has had her OE hijacked, but (touchpad too sensitive ) may have blocked her own contact ID in the address book on the receiving laptop!!! I guess this is the problem, but how can I first check, and then repair, please?

All suggestions welcome

Hi all
My outlook express trashes incoming email from one address - my brother. When I start OE an unread mail shows in deleted items folder. I have set up a mail rule indicating that all mail from him go to a specific folder but the deleted items folder gets it first.

Any clues?

Answer:outlook express trashes incoming email

Hi jdansam..

Have you tried deleting the rule and recreating it?

Also, do you have any other rules that may be conflicting i.e have matching words that may appear in your brother's email address or headers?

Hope that helps :-)

I have just set up my mates laptop with bt broadband using an adsl 205 router. I have set up his email account, and it sends and receives fine, but on a restart the incoming mail server changes from the corroect address which is mail.btinternet.com to 127.0.0.1. I have rentered the correct details and it works fine, I am sure I have all the write boxes ticked and can connect to the internet and send mail ok but the incoming mail server still defaults back to 127.0.0.1 on a restart or reboot. Can anybody help get mail.btinternet.com to stay as the default.many thanks

Answer:outlook express incoming mail server

What anti spam / anti virus does he have installed? McAfee and some others change the incoming address to 127.0.0.1 which is the Loop Back Address and the location of the Anti Spam/ Virus software. That way the Anti Spam / Virus can scan the incoming mail first and then pass it to Outlook.Leave it at 127.0.0.1

Some genius decided that I should not see certain part of my incoming e-mails. It's not porno or anything like that. It's from people and businesses with which I correspond. I know I can click on the warning to get some of the info back but not all af it. I shouldn't have to deal with that, it's a nuisance. How can I make it so that this doesn't interfere with my life?

Hello,

Does anyone know whether there's a way to disable HTML-coded mails from accessing the internet in Outlook Express? I occasionally open a message from a spammer that's contains HTML, and I realize it's an easy matter to set a web bug in the message that would track whether I opened the mail or not.

Note: I am not concerned with the SENDing of messages, but rather the READING of messages. I'd prefer to have them display formatted, but NOT be allowed to access the internet, but would settle for viewing the raw HTML.

This seems like an easy feature to implement. If it's not there, any ideas as to why?

TIA...

I'm sure there is an obvious answer to this query but at the moment I'm feeling very dim.!I'm using 'Freeserve' as my ISP and the Incoming Mail address is 'pop.freeserve.net'.Each time I use the mailing system this address is change to 'Local Host' and the original mail address is added onto my 'Account Name'.This causes failures and I have to correct before I can receive my mail.Any ideas out there.? Answer:Pop3 (incoming) sever not responding in Outlook Express 6

"The server you are connected to is using a security certificatethat could not be verified." - I had a problem like that once when my date/time was not set correctly."Then, I get recurrent times-out, as the server tries to re-connectevery 60 seconds" - That is probably due to the fact that it has refused a secure connection. Once the security certificate can be verified it will fetch the mail

I have four new Yahoo mail accounts and one default account. I have to sign in and sign out every time I want to check mail from one account to the other.

I was wondering if there was an easier way to do that. Specifically, is there a way to configure Outlook Express to automatically check my Yahoo mail for me on each of my screen names..???

My Sent Items and Inbox folders became filled with emails on Tuesday and I was unable to send or receive emails until I removed several thousand old emails from both folders (which I did, then the system was running fine again as of late Tuesday). I discovered this problem when I attempted to send 3 emails with attachments, making the emails around 5 megabytes each in size (I did not realize that the recipient's system could not handle any email more than 2 megabytes - thus, my Outlook Express kept trying to send these emails every 1 minute for 3 hours until I discovered the problem). I had to delete around 100 email notifications that the recipient could not receive emails at that size and that my email boxes were full.

I corrected these problems and relocated the emails from my Outlook Box to Drafts (until the recipient can change his settings).

All day Wednesday (yesterday) I was able to send & receive emails without a problem. This morning I was sending & recieving as well, then all of a sudden, I was unable to receive any emails. When Outlook attempts to receive, I briefly see a box with the number of emails attempting to be received, then I get an Unknown Error message. I am able to send emails without any problem and my Internet connection has been stable all day.

I've rebooted, turned on & off Outlook. I even disconnected my Internet connection, then reconnected it. I've checked my Outlook settings and they are fine. I also turned off my ... Read more

Hi rherrygers

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Have you attempted to logon to your ISP's mail server to see what messages are still on the mail server along with determining the size of the messages?
Outlook Express may be timing out trying to download a message that is larger than normal.
Did you also send yourself a copy of the message with the attachment?

Can you post the exact error message please?
If the Send/Receive window is not appearing, you can make it appear by double clicking the area marked in red here:
When the Send/Receive window appears, click the Errors tab, right click on the error message and select Copy and paste the error message here.

I have an irritating problem with Outlook Express in that it won't collect mail from my BT Internet account without manual interference . The problem is that when I input the name of the server for incoming mail i.e. mail.btinternet.com it won't stay there and everytime that I close and re-open my PC this reverts to a numeric "name" which BT obviously wont accept ( The same number appears for my Supanet mail which happily gets delivered . Every day I have to re-enter the mail.btinternet.com hit the "apply" button and OK ( on the "Servers" panel ( Tools/Accounts/Properties/Servers) and while I'm cionnected , the mail comes through OK .

Somewhere there is an overriding default problem but how do I get the system to accept my instructions on a permanent basis ??

I posted on this problem previously but have way more debug time now to narrow down the issue.
Hoping one of you smarter people can help me with this.

it would be a fun challenge if not so serious.....

Several people who work together routinely email one another. they all use Outlook Express, and they all have their email addresses on one domain via their ISP, Grande Communications. One by one, the various folk reported they no longer were getting emails from their buddies. I tested things every which way and found only these qualifiers:
- Webmail is fine. no issues at all if they login via browser and work their mail that way.
- Outgoing mail sent from inside OE6 works fine. no issues, no error messages, things show up in the 'Sent' folder as they should, etc. however......
- Mail sent to any of the buddies does not arrive. However mail sent to anyone "outside" that circle [me for instance] arrives just dandy.
- Disabling Firewalls and Scanners [avast] has no effect.
- Several good long chats with the Grande tech support yield no clues - there are no errors or anomalies that they can see. biz as usual....
- Setting up new/additional identities in OE produces the same results. Send fine, receive fine from anyone OTHER than the buddies.

To say I'm stumped is an understatement. If it were a port issue [server port... i.e. 110 or 995 or whatever] it would seem ALL incoming messages would be adversely affected. Similarly if the router were having issue... Read more

I use OE 6 on my desktop running XP pro, but use Outlook 2007 on my laptop running XP home. I cannot receive attachments sent from my Outlook 2007 to my OE 6 when I send it to myself. They are stripped off, not even showing an attachment. The attachment comes through to other recipients as far as I know, INCLUDING my alternate email address (through at&t). So OE 6 receives the attachment when I send it from my default email account to my at&t account, but not when I send it to from and to my default account. I have checked with my email provider, who has checked the server (IMAP) and they do not see any problem--the attachment is on the server. I have already unchecked all potential blocks under the Security Tab--image blocking and attachment blocking--and am operating in the Internet Zone. And, as far as I know, I am receiving attachments from everyone else in the world. I know there are ways to work around this problem, but it is irritating and I have concerns that my email attachments to clients may be unknowingly blocked. Also, I cannot receive those attachments on my Blackberry either.

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me? A colleague of mine is trying to read emails from Hotmail. When the email appears, after the user clicks on the email from the inbox, an error message appears saying 'Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close'. This closes Internet Explorer. I then log onto Hotmail as myself and am able to view emails without any problems whilst logged on as the user's Windows XP login.

The user in question uses I.E. Version 6. I have tried deleting temporary Internet files and also cookies. I have also tried restarting the PC and also restarting the default settings on Internet Explorer which hasn't fixed the problem. Do you think upgrading the browser to version 7 would be the best way to fix this issue as the user has said he can access his Hotmail emails from home without any problems?

I would be grateful for any help.

If it was an Outlook issue, all your email messages would be equally affected, but since only some of them are affected, they are probably damaged or corrupt. Nothing you can do about that.

Answer:how do i get emails from outlook express 6 into outlook 2007?

I don't use Outlook, but I'd think the general procedure would be to:

1: Export from Outlook Express to location X

2: Open Outlook, use the import function, and navigate to location X.

Is that what you are doing?

Can you export in more than 1 format? If so, try another format.

It's also a good idea to make manual copies of all of your Outlook Express files (dbx, etc) in case your corrupt the originals during the export/import process.

Email export and import functions haven't improved in the last 10 years, so welcome to reality. I hate changing email programs for that reason.

There are applications out there designed to convert DBX to PST, but I don't know if they are required.

If this has been posted already then I spologise for my repeat query, but here it is.

My friend has a laptop running Windows 2000, with OE6 running on it. Everything was working fine until Windows downloaded a new update, at which point all of his internet explorer favorites were gone and all outlook settings were back to default. No messages, contacts, nothing.

The user profiles in Documents and Settings also differ. Before, there was one profile for his account, John. Now, there's also John.E500. I have imported the emails and contacts back from his old profile to the new one, and the internet favorites, and everything worked fine.

Now, he called me this morning and said the problem had occurred again, all emails and contacts lost. Could someone who knows about OE6 please give me some advice on how to stop this from occurring?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
