I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

To my knowledge, when an OS such as Windows 8.1 is booted, all firmware/bios drivers are replaced by more appropriate OS drivers in the boot drive during start up. I learnt this happens for the latest versions of Windows. Am I right? Do all bios drivers get replaced? Does this happen with the latest versions of OS X as well?

If this is so, then you can discard firmware as suspected of causing problems on a computer that's already booted up. Unless there's a problem that's causing a driver to remain in RAM after boot.

Answer:Does firmware drivers get completely replaced by OS drivers after boot in OS X and Windows?

No...

I have never heard of an operating system install affecting BIOS is anyway what so ever. If you are having issues it is most likely related to your drivers imo. Search you PC manufactures website for drivers and download the most current stable version and install those.

Hi. I have two LG blu-ray drives. GGC-H20L is a blu-ray player only (burns DVDs). WH08LS20L is a blu-ray burner. I'm beginning to note a little inconsistency ("studdering" on some discs, for example) and would like to see if there are updates for my drivers/firmware. When I Google "LG Drivers" or anything similar, I get Driver Detective which I know to be malware. Just trying the URL "LG.com" gets me into their washing machines and TV's only. Does anyone know where to get their latest drivers/firmware? Thanks!

Answer:Solved: LG blu-ray drivers/firmware

There are no drivers for internal optical drives.

But firmware is available on the LG site, see here for the GGC-H20L: http://www.lg.com/us/support/produc...=documents&targetPage=support-product-profile

No downloads for the WH08LS20L that I could find.

Hi,

I have a post here at MajorGeeks that might be better suited to this forum because it's about drivers and firmware for a SATA HUB. It's located here

Different versions of the same things are available for download for Windows 7 for a single Thinkpad model -T530. Why is that? At first I thought it could be because someone forgot to remove the older versions, but then I have tried installing the updated Intel Rapid Storage Driver which is supposed to work in Windows 7 and Windows 8 (according to the note on the installation package, not the Lenovo's download page), but then DVD drive's shut down malfunctioned. I have restored the driver to previous version and now it works fine again, so I'm wondering if I can expect the same kind of instability from other newer/double versions of the same driver/firmware available for a single model laptop.

Answer:Why are there multiple versions of the same drivers/firmware

Try the 12.5 Rapid Storage drivers. SMART data doesn't show up for me if I use anything from 12.6 or 12.7.

Hi!

I juts got my modem (Zyxel P-600 series) replaced for the 3rd time and It was working fine when I got it yesterday afternoon around 4:30pm-5:00pm and was using and was able to get internet until i decided to download Driver Detective and it scanned all my files and I think that's what messed up my modem. The Power and Ethernet light juts keeps on blinking but no DSL or Internet light comes on. I've tried resetting it for 30 or more seconds, and that didn't work either. So, I guess what I'm asking is, is there any drivers and firmware for my Zyxel P-600 series modem? I think if I can get that, then it might work. I already uninstalled Driver Detective and that didn't help either. My Internet Provider is: Earthlink and I don't think they will send me another modem since this is the 3rd modem.

Can someone please, please, help me A.S.A.P.

(P.S.) We also have a linksys router that my dad uses for work to work on his laptop but he won't be able to do that now that we don't have Internet.

Thanks,

~David~

Just a heads up for those of you dealing with HP Hardware. Looks like they're trying to convince people to keep their support contracts active by forcing you to keep machines under contract in order to get software and firmware updates.

I received this in my email today:

Hi there -
I am running a 64-bit Win 7 system and had to do a fresh reinstall of absolutely everything.  In completing this, I find that the Drivers and Firmware that initially came with my system is for XP or Vista and the one that I had later downloaded from
HP is no longer available (not supported).
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated as the scanner is still working (was) perfectly and is used several times per week.

Hi! I am new to the forums but I'll get to the point. I am getting a Razer Deathadder 3500 DPI Gaming Mouse for Christmas from amazon.com. I am really excited about it but heard it had driver and firmware issues that could totally break the mouse. What should I do when I receive the mouse? Should I use the CD Drivers, plug in the mouse and then update them from razerzone.com? Should I install the drivers, plug in the mouse, then install the firmware? Should I install the CD, plug in the mouse then install the drivers and firmware from razerzone? I have heard that you should install the drivers and then the firmware. There are just so many wrong ways to do it but could you please tell me the right way? I REALLY DON'T Want this mouse to break the first day. Oh and I don't even know if it comes with a CD

Answer:How do I install the Razer deathadder drivers + Firmware.

Efforts to burn bluray or double layer DVD consistently fail regardless of burner software or brand of disk. Firmware on drive is 1.0. The Sony website has an update to 1.14, but the program checks if the machine is a Sony Vaio and fails on the Y580. Driver 6.1.7601, which is dated 2006, so that's pretty stale too. Can't find firmware anywhere. Only drivers appear to be generics. Any and all suggestions and sources welcomed.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. The original installation went just fine, but I never did test to see if transfer speeds were any faster. The instructions specifically mention to install the software first, then the hardware. Recently, I did a clean reinstall of Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). I never did remove the card. I tried running the software with the hardware already installed. Well, the drives are recognized and all, but the transfer rate between the two drives (one is Seagate 3.0 and one is WD 3.0) is only around 50 MB/sec...USB 2.0 speed, right?
So, from what I've been able to find over the past couple of hours is that I can't contact WD about the card. They know nothing, and the product can't be found on their website. In device manager, it's listed as NEC Electronics, and it seems there's been some combination of forces between NEC Electronics and Renesas.
Questions:
1. I have found updated drivers and firmware for NEC/Renesas USB 3.0 cards, but they are broken down into different models or families. For instance, most of them use a number along the lines of uPD720200/uPD720200A Version 2.1.27 WHQL
uPD720201/uPD720202 Version 3.0.8.0 WHQL
So, how do I find out what my uPD number is, so that I grab the right files?
2. Do I ... Read more

Answer:Trying to find latest drivers/firmware for USB 3.0 card.

Im trying to update my copperhead's firmware and when i unplugged it and plugged back while holding the profile button like it told me to, when i plugged it back in it found new hardware and needs a driver for it. The guide on razer's site told me that this would happen and to just point it to my driver, but i dont know where that is. I tried pointing it to the folder where i extraxted the driver archive from razer. Im assuming that the hardware wizard is looking for an .inf and in the driver archive/folder from razer theres a setup.exe and Data1.cab Data2.cab and some other files. The CD that came with the mouse has the same files. The only other thing that I can think of is to go to the main windows "collection" of .inf driver files, but I dont know where that is. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Razer Copperhead Firmware, need drivers/location

Download the drivers again (or the first time). Install them like it says... just make sure to note the location it is to be installed to.

That way, you have the latest drivers and firmware, and you know where it is.

Theres a printed manual coming with the machine saying I will find Support unter http://www.hp.com/support/DL60Gen9_Setup_en clicking that gives me just thatt "ooops"-Site used to be called 404. Using the Product Name or Product Number (P8Y77A) given in my invoice also does neither find Driver nor firmware Downloads for the product. I now searched the product in the HP store and found the Product Number YN0163 which could also be read as YNO163. After all theres no driver or supportfile findings for that product as well. So, don't HP support their own products anymore? kind regardsMichael

Hi,

I just purchased a new Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, it has a TS-L633C DVD-RW drive.

I updated the DVD drive firmware to a version available on Dell's website (original D300, current DW10).

Now every time Vista starts, the "found New Hardware" wizard opens and attempts to install drivers for the DVD drive (which it doesn't find).

The drive functions perfectly, it appears in "Computer", and I am certain there are no drivers that need to be updated.

How do I get Vista to stop nagging me to update the drivers ?

Thanks!

I've seen other posts about drivers, but I really think I need to re-install the firmware... on boot, all Dell laptops in the E64xx and E65xx series, at least, show the Intel Management Engine v (I forget, sorry...)
But this particular E6500 *usually* just has a blank screen, flashing cursor... Re-start - same thing.  Buuuut! once in a while, it'll flash a message about using the "default image" - and the OS loads... until next time it somehow shuts down.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Besides not booting, it's a great laptop!

Answer:Replacing router Firmware w/ third party Firmware?

nope its easy, and as long as your smart and follow the few basic guildlines very unlikely chance of damaging the router. Biggest suggestion is never do the update via wireless as if you loss signal or what not could loose a bit of data for the router update.

Dell drivers are Intel/Nvidia drivers that are customized for your exact model and should be used. They are available at Dell Support if you have to reinstall.

Will this confuse the motherboard bios or Windows 7?

Answer:2 SSD's 2 Different firmware?

I don't think it will give any problems just because of firmwares. After all, it's entirely internal to each device. As long as each one has the proper drivers and the motherboard recognizes each one, they should work.

Went back to Gateway(Notebook Manufacturer) and they don't have. Any suggestions? Ifu can't fix, I guess u install a new DVD Device or a new Notebook.
Was also told by Gateway I needed a Codec upgrade.

Answer:OEM DVD Firmware

The codec pack is easy enough- Techspot has what you need here http://www.techspot.com/downloads/775-klite-codec-pack-full.html
Install and then try running the discs.

How does the drive show up in the Device Manager ? No exclamation mark in a yellow triangle?
What DVD's won't it run-commercial (retail) movies, or discs you are attempting to burn ? If the latter, what brand of discs.

If it definitely requires a firmware update then it seem's you're out of luck as there are none as far as I can tell.

I have a couple of DLink 900AP's. One has the standard DLink firmware but the other has some specialist firmware for use with a commercial WiFi network.Does anyone know if it's possible to download the non-standard DLink firmware from the 900AP - so I can flash it to my other 900AP?

Answer:Firmware for an AP

No; I think you'd have to find it on the net. Search for whatever info you have even just its revision number. You can usually make backups of router/AP configurations, of course, but although the firwmare is sometimes saved along with it, it may not accept being ported across and you'd lose the other AP's settings in so doing.

Firmware is half software, half hardware. Usually it is software embedded permanently into a piece of hardware. Such as the software that runs a digital camera, or drives a USB networking cable.

Question: firmware

my grandson as a mp3 player he wants to upgrade with firmware i found the firmware for his model at the mpman site downloaded it in a zip file but there wasn't any instructions on the site or in the file on how to install can anyone advise Thank you Dave

Answer:firmware

If you have not unzipped it, do that now, there may/should be a file, normally called README.txt (if not look for any file with a .txt etention). Hopefully this file will have instructions on how to use it, if not, let us know the name of the mp3 player and someone prob can sort your prob.Hope this helps.

Question: firmware

I am fresh out of college, and seem to have found a job where I am in way over my head. My employer knows it though, and just expects me to try my best.... anyway heres the question, even though it seems dumb...
When using C, does a hexadecimal Number refer to the memory address (AKA a register or part of the the memory or a port), or does it simply refer to the number itself?

Eg:
ulData = ulMemPos + 0x20;
does this mean add the hexadecimal value of 20-- or to add twenty memory addressing to it?

Answer:firmware

just a number

Question: Firmware

I recently purchased an nVIDIA 6200AGP8x 350MHz Graphics Card with 512MB For an eight year old Dell Dimension 4600i (P4, 3G HT with a 128 card). As I didn?t think I was getting the full benefit of the new card I checked in BIOS. The maximum it goes to is 256 so I looked the Dell site and saw there were 4 updates, one being video, ok so I downloaded it, and then stopped. I have had a bad experience with firmware (a Plextor drive that refused to work after an update) as a result I am not sure whether to go ahead or not. Ok pathetic but please humour me, do the risks out way the benefits.
Oh, re. the HP on this PC, I noticed it is disabled in BIOS sorry better for a new thread perhaps.
Dave

Answer:Firmware

Now lets see if I understand. You have replaced the the original graphics card with a nVIDIA 6200AGP8x 350MHz Graphics Card.
From the Dell web site it only shows one update for the Bios but it does not state what it was for so should not be used.
Although it does have several driver updates for graphics cards these are not for the new card you have installed and should not be used. Go to the nVidia web site for new updated drivers.
From my memory the bios does not indicate how much memory the graphics card uses. I could be wrong.

Unlikely to be firmware, possibly a missing video codex, but difficult to say. What exactly happens when you try to play a DVD, my Inspiron plays them with the preloaded Cybercom PowerDVD player.

I'm on DP 8.1.1. With the recent release of cyan for DP users, does any one know if doing the cyan update would take me back to 8.1? Or will it just slap on the firmware alone and still leave me on my current version?

Answer:Firmware only or Firmware with 8.1?

It will leave you at 8.1.1. It is simply a firmware update to Cyan for Lumia devices.

Question: firmware?

I heard someone use the word firmware the other day and wondered what the heck it is. After checking out the definition on www.webopedia.com I am still a little confused on the subject. Anyone care to explain this to me? Please?

Answer:firmware?

well i understand it as a piece of software build into hardware. Examples of firmware are: bios's, video bios's etc.

There is a way of upgrading firmware in hardware like DVD burners to make them faster or burn dual layer.

Hi,I recently bought my first CD burner. It's a Sony Spessa USB Plus CRX100E/X2 drive. I found out that it can't quite burn an entire 80 min/700MB disk, but that there is supposedly a firmware update that fixes it. I downloaded a firmware update program from Sony's website (found here), and flashed the drive with the default firmware file (CDRW0008.BIN), but it didn't seem to do anything except change the driver to an EEPROM driver. I switched back to the original driver, and it was as if I had never done anything...The firmware program came with another BIN file, ZERO.BIN, so I tried flashing that. I guess that was a mistake, because now the drive doesn't work at all - it's recognized as a "non-specific QT processor with JG". I tried changing the driver back to the original again, but this time Windows won't use it. It just says that there are no compatible drivers for the device. I tried to flash the firmware with the program from Sony again, but now it doesn't recognize the drive as being compatible, so it won't flash it.I was hoping to get some support from Sony, but they informed me that I would have to pay more than I paid for the drive in the first place to get support. So, I hope someone here might have an idea of how I can fix it.

Answer:Is there any way to fix this firmware?

That is why the smarter people here do NOT recommend firmware or BIOS updates lightly. You can end up with a doorstop and no recourse. If the product is still under warranty and doesn't do what is advertised, take it back for a return or replacement with something that does.

hi!

Can anyone tell me what is firmware?

Answer:what is a firmware?

Firmware - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
In electronic systems and computing, firmware is a term often used to denote the fixed, usually rather small, programs and/or data structures that internally control various electronic devices. Typical examples of devices containing firmware range from end-user products such as remote controls or calculators, through computer parts and devices like hard disks, keyboards, TFT screens or memory cards, all the way to scientific instrumentation and industrial robotics. Also more complex consumer devices, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, synthesizers, etc., contain firmware to enable the device's basic operation as well as implementing higher-level functions.

I need a firmware to help boost the wireless power of my router. Antennas are NOT an option. I tried looking online but I couldn't find any that did that. Help please!?!?!

Answer:wgr614v5 firmware HELP!!!

What kind of router you have? It it is Linksys, there there is a good chance there is one for it.

Keep in mind, RF communications is a two way street. Just by adding power to router you may not solve your problem.

Immagine you and your freind are 1 mile apart, talking to each other via powered loudspeakers, one at each end. Now, you say I want to increase our talking range and I am going to make my speaker 4 times louder. Then you go 4 miles away. Your friend will be able to hear you. You will not be able to hear your freind. He is still on low power, suitable for only 1 mile range of communications. In this situation you have an UNBALLANCED set up which is in one direction adequate and in the other dirction it is NOT. Do you get my point?

Question: Firmware Update

O.K. when originally wanting to do an Upgrade to Windows 8 i used VM to check it out. When i decided after alot of research to do the upgrade i used Windows 8 upgrade assistant. The message i receved on compatibilty was only one problem.Your PC Firmware doesn't support secure boot so you won't be able to use it in Windows 8.Secure boot requires firmware that supports UEFI v2.3.1 Errata B and has the Microsoft Windows Certification Authority in the UEFI signature database.Sure anyone who has UEFI like me received this message using this upgrade assistant.Through many hour and days of research on internet and other forums nobody seems to know how i can update my firmware, neither ASUS could advise me or Microsoft. To me i figured it should be a BIOS update, but no new ones are available for my system. So since i had no answers i decided just to do an install of Windows 8 Pro 64 bit (clean install) works well, faster then Windows 7.So far i like it.Only clue i have at this point was a site i found.Knowing my BIOS is a American Megatrend http://www.ami.com/Products/BIOSandEFIFirmware/AptioV/  Not sure if this is an answer to be able to do a UEFI install of Windows 8 Pro again to get full use of secure boot,GPT Partitions, but this is closest clue i got.BIOS stuff and flashing it can always be risky, rendering the motherboard inoperable, causing major issues, that i do not want to do.If anyone knows anything on this and can help with it would be very much appreciated i am stumped on thi... I have an Olympus Evolt-500 that won't update the firmware. I'm running XP pro with a DSL internet connection. I've talked to every tech support person Olympus has and they don't have a clue what's wrong.

It will recognize the camera and lenses but it will download from 50% to 83% of the firmware update, then a message pops up and says no connection to server and everything shuts off. They had me try the download with no firewall on and using just the modem no router. I've used Olympus Viewer, Olympus Master and Olympus Studio Trial version and they all download about the same amount before they shut down.

I'm open to suggestions at this point.

Hey all,

I've got a Linksys PCI wireless card in my rig (WMP11). A few weeks ago I installed the latest firmware via. windows update (i know... very bad) I did not relieze that windows update had already downloaded the file and when I installed directx9 it when ahead and installed it.

Now I get a message 'the firmware of the card is too old or not suitable for running in your enviroment. The utility is going to update the firmware of your card' message all the time.

When I attempt to let the firmware (via this warning window) I get a error message stating 'This image will not work on the selected card. (8013)

I can't do a restore because directx9 was installed at the same time as the firmware update, and my attempts to uninstall/ reinstall has done nothing to take care of the firmware warning. The linksys website does not have a firmware update (any for that matter) to download.

The card works fine, but the message is annoying. Any ideas where I can score an older version of the firmware (and how do I install it?)

Thanks in advance...
G

Hi all,I'm in the need of restoring my Ideapad A10 model 20323 (loaned it to a friend who - genius - erased the internal sdcard to install a rom without backing up the disk).Nothing serious I said: it's simply a matter of downloading the firmware from Lenovo servers.Surprisingly, I couldn't find anything.I realize that the Ideapad A10 is an old model, but I think that Lenovo servers are big eneough to host the firmware of a discontinued model. Moreover, the netbook always worked well: so what should I do ? Throw it away only because of lack of such an easy remedy like downloading the restore image ?I am simply asking for what I paid for: the ability to use the product I purchased.I am confident that Lenovo will soon resolve this issue and will upload the firmware.

Noob here!

I just got a new Dell XPS 8300. I will be placing a Crucial M4 ssd in it to be my main drive. I've been reading up on what to do, and my main concern so far is the firmware update. It sounds slightly more complicated than I'd like, and I am trying to decide if it's definitely something I need to do before installing Windows7 on the ssd.

Would I be a fool to just install it as-is, with whatever firmware comes on the drive?

I will be installing Windows7 Home Premium on it, but then will be paying for the upgrade to unlock it to Professional.

Thanks!

Question: Firmware update

Hello, I have recently purchased an "Onyx Portable Media Player" by "Mach Speed Technologies". I installed the included drivers and software and am currently upgrading the firmware. The update window says "SigmaTel MSCN Firmware", so I'm assuming it's licensed by SigmaTel. It's updating from version 000.000.000 to 880.282.433. The window's progress bar seems to be stuck at "Initializing", with no advances made in the main progress bar but the smaller one constantly filling and then refilling. Is this just going to take a long time or is there something wrong?

I can provide a screenshot if needed.

Old news at least to me. I prefer Tomato my self, better QoS. Bit of advice, with the don't go much above 84mW on the wireless with out extra cooling for the transmitter. DD-WRT support overclocking as well. Not sure if it supports it on the GL but I ran my WRT54G at 300MHz for months. After a small heatsink and fan mod obviously. :major Theres all kinds of fun mods for the WRT series, adding an SD card reader for example.
