Preferred Solution: Reducing JPEG images for Emails etc

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you tried doing a Save As (presumably in this case a .jpeg)?Your original file will remain intact.

Being a broadbander, I don't normally worry about the size of the files I send via email to my contacts. However, one of them still has a 56k dial up modem and my digital camera images (I like to take pictures at the optimum quality on a 4mp camera) block her email for the best part of an hour.So I have two questions:1)How do I reduce the size of an image fit for emailing2)What is an acceptable size that still has decent quality and yet can be downloaded on a dial up modem more speedily? All suggestions gratefully received, thanks.

Answer:Reducing size of digital images for emailing

From past experience and i may be getting muddled a bit but do not think so.Open MSPaint and open the jpeg image with that. Crop it a little and save as a BITMAP image (.bmp)I used to send back files (pics) in that format after they started as jpeg.About 1mb is fine and only takes a short while to be seen by recipient. No doubt someone will have a better option but have a go and see if it works.

Hi! I'm still having problems saving Pictures as JPEGs. I used to be able to save pictures as JPEG images when online. However, for some strange reason, I can only save images as Bitmap images now. I've tried all the obvious things that Microsoft suggests: delete Temporary Internet Files and Clear the Do not save encrypted pages to disk, but without any results. I have Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Answer:Bitmap images instead of jpeg images

What is the source of the images? Typically images sent over the internet are JPEG or GIF However you/we can only receive what is sent to us so I suspect the bitmaps are what are being sent. There is no way a jpeg sent can turn up as bitmap as far as I can see.

As soon as the mouse moves over the web page icon the following message appears:- "some pictures have been blocked to help prevent the sender from identifying your computer". This occurs using IE, google and with Mcafee firewall off. Browsers are set to "allow images". Any help would be great!

Sounds like you have links to the pictures from your computer rather than storing the pictures on the web site.

I compressed a jpeg image using picture manager. I wanted to email a few pictues easier and used the email messages selection under the compression tab. Now the pic is too small and I can't figure out how to enlarge to picture without it being blurry and pixilated. Is decompression an option? Thanks!! Jennifer

Answer:I need help uncompressing jpeg images

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to restore the original picture from the emailed versions. Depending on the software and/or email program you're using, it's probably resized the image to lower resolution, which is NOT the same as compression. Also, JPEG is what's known as "lossy compression", which means it makes images smaller by discarding some of the image data, and once that data is gone, it's gone.

Your only hope is that you still have the unaltered originals on your computer - again depending on the software (I'm not familiar with Picture Manager), the resized version that's emailed may be a new copy and the original is still intact.

I am having a similar problem as someone else on here but the thread was closed before the problem was solved. I took some pictures with my digital camera and without dropping it or damaging it in any way, it said the card could not be used, even though it had just been working fine. I plugged the SD card into my laptop and it said there was an I/O error. I have Windows Vista. Anyway, I ended up finding software to get some pictures uploaded from the SD card and the images are all JPEGs but they won't open on Windows Photo Gallery or Paint. For Windows Photo Gallery it says "Photo Gallery can't open the video or picture. This file is not supported, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Gallery." For Paint it says "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported." I tried converting the pictures with some software I found on the internet but they didn't convert. Do you have any idea what the problem is or how I can fix it? Oh, and after I did all this, the SD card worked in my camera, but it had no pictures on it. Are the files corrupted some how?

Answer:JPEG Images won't open

Download and install card recovery software here:
http://www.cardrecovery.com/

See if that recovers your files. Do you have a USB cable that you can use instead of using the card reader?

I've just tried looking at some JPEG images on my new Sony HXD995 recorder. The pictures are not sharp, the colour is a bit iffy and there is a slight judder. The quality is nothing like as good as on my desktop which is pin sharp with a good colour likeness. What I'm wondering is whether the problem is my old cathode ray Sony 28 inch TV which seems OK for normal use, or whether I can't expect a decent image via a TV.If the latter, I shall have to invest sometime in a laptop which seems a better bet than continually printing photos and spending a fortune in paper and ink. Any recommendations in a cheap 15.4 laptop with a decent screen, please. I'm not into games but it also might be useful on a boat for navigation.

Answer:Viewing JPEG images

I suspect the problem is to do with the way the (number of) pixels that make up the jpeg image are mapped [e.g. extrapolated (= stretched) / interpolated (= compressed)] to fit your TV screen.

However, double clicking on some individual photos to view as larger image only displays the message "No Preview Available" whilst others openin this way all the time. After getting my PC sorted out following a crash, I find that a high proportion of my 3,600 graphics (mainly photographs) appear to have become corrupted. Curiously, those that were in a WinZipped, password-protected folder are all safe - they have been found in a plain, non-password-protected folder. The Summary tab of the Properties boxes of all these openable graphics all show the usual technical data. The Summary tab of the Properties boxes of all the unopenable pics (total c. 40 MB's) says 'Summary properties are unavailable for the selected source(s)'. When using the Ask Jeeves Desktop Search Engine, the message 'File no longer exists' appears for the corrupted JPEG's.Given that c. 40 MB's is still there, does anybody know how these pics might be repaired and restored? Many Thanks.

Answer:Corrupted JPEG Images?

I've had a similar experience after deleting by accident graphic files and I screwed up the undelete move which I did afterwards...Someone indicated to me that the individual file information/header was corrupted and therefore, I could not recover them. This would explain why the file size is still there.I still keep a folder with the corrupted files in the hope that one day I'll find a solution....I would be glad to hear such a good news !

What should I do? GIFs and JPEGS randomly come up distorted in browser (IE 5). It seems like I have been having this problem only since I re-selected IE5 as the default program to view JPEGs. (Used to be Paint Shop Pro, but that proved to be a pin in the rear.) I still let GIFs open in Paint Shop Pro, but they, too, get messed up when part of a webpage during browsing.
I checked the file type association foder. It does specify IE5 for JPEGs, and IE 5 promptly opens them, but my pictures have white lines here and their (looks like missing pixels) with no apparent reason. Several refresh or scroling up and down wil fix or worsen the problem. If I do not scroll on a page, I NEVER have a problem.
Should I try to use the repair tool?
Also, I noticed GIFs are not listed seperately in the file association folder. They are part of the "animation" file types. Is that the way it should be?

Hi
I need to find a way of converting PDF files to JPEG images in order to place them onto a website using JOOMLA Content Management System .
As there appears to be a lot of 'converting' software available, can anyone recommend suitable software (simpler the better)!

Answer:Converting PDF files to JPEG images.

I found, while using cool pdf reader, the program will leave a gif file in the temp folder of the last page viewed of the pdf file. Then, it's just a matter of transferring the file to another folder for a graphics program to convert to jpg.
Of course, this process wouldn't work well if several pdf files are involved.

Have been doing a photo album. For no apparent reason everytime I try to open a JPEG Image file it opens in WORD. It never did this before, but for no apparent reason it is doing it now.

At the moment the only way I can open in Windows is to go to "Open With" and click "Windows", but it doesn't stay there.

What in the world could have happened, because it was always opening in Windows/Fax Viewer all the time.

Any solution to get it all back to the correct default?

Thanks

when you choose "Open With" you should get a choice of programs - choose the program and then there will be a tick box - that says something like - always use this program to open files of this type - make sure that is ticked

this is on windows XP - correct

Hi

My problem started sometime in the end of December. I have Vista and Photoshop Elements 7 on my PC and somehow my .NEF and .JPG images start getting corrupted. In the beginning Photoshop told me that there was 'an unexpected end-of-file error' in some of the NEF images.
The result was that I couldn't view the images correctly and also when I tried to save as JPG the problem was the same.

Now I have totally reinstalled Vista etc and the problem has changed a bit.
Sometimes the images look ok in one application (e.g. Windows Photo Gallery) but corrupted in another (photoshop) like below, but the problem is that sometimes it is the other way around, meaning that the problem is not really consistent.

.NEF images have the same problem - in one application they may look good, and in another they look bad.

I burned some 300 photos to a CD-R using Nero Express. All photos were originally saved to my hard drive using Photoshop. The vast majority of them display just fine when I play the CD on my DVD player. However,
several of the photos will not display even though other photos, taken on the same camera, at the same time, saved in the same folder, of the same type will display just fine. I have one folder where out of 30 photos (my grandson's birthday), only ONE will display on the TV. Other folders may have none to several images which won't show on-screen. Hey Team,

Just wondering if there is a way to convert .TIFF files to .JPEG files or .GIF files on the fly.

Internet Explorer opens up image viewer everytime I try to open a .TIFF file and I would like to open the file so that it displays in the browser window itself rather than launching another program to view it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mr G.

Answer:ASP - Converting images from .TIFF to .JPEG

TIFF files should work in IE.. perhaps the content type is not being set properly / sent for TIFF files from your site?

Earlier this year I had a fantastic holiday in Norway and tooks loads of pix which were stored on Picasa. Fed up with Picasa's control I copied all my pix to another folder and uninstalled Picasa. On looking for my Norway pictures I find they're all saved as PNG instead of JPEG. I've tried to open them but they come up as strange little icons with no option to edit or save as.

Can anyone help me to restore them please? I don't want to restore Picasa just my pictures.

Hello friends:Trying to copy images taken from a digital camera via email onto my Compact Flash Card for printing.I assumed the images from the digital camera would be in JPeg format, but they are saving as Bitmaps. When I transfer these Bitmap images onto my Compact Flash card - the card will not reconise the prints. Can I change the source of the Image when I save it to be in JPeg format so that the Compact Flash Card will read it?Many thanks............ Neil.

Answer:Digital Images - Bitmap v JPeg

Right click on the file and from Save As select .jpeg filesIf this doesn't work open it in a photo editng utility first (or in MS Paint) and do the same.

I'm running Windows 2000, and I want to be able to see JPEG images when I select "Thumbnails" under the View menu. Currently, the only images that display are Windows bit map images (BMP). I know it's possible to see JPEG windows as thumbnails under Windows 2000 because I used to have a different computer that ran 2000 and did display JPEGs. However, I got a new computer that doesn't. I'm assuming there is a way to tell Windows 2000 to display JPEG images in thumbnails, but I can't find any reference to thumbnail views in Windows help or on the Microsoft website.

Any suggestions, please?

I have heard that this is possible. I have cropped and image of a fish I caught, and it has removed about the last 1/3d of the fish. And like an idiot, I deleted the original.

I thought it had something to do with the parity bits embedded in a jpeg image, but I cannot remember where I read it.

Can anyone help?

Answer:JPEG images not getting through as file attach!!

It may be due to the size of them, hold down ctrl and left click on the files, let go of ctrl and right click on 1 and choose send to email recipient, you will be asked if you want to make smaller, an outlook express message window will open. For the future, if you click on an empty part of the desktop and press F1 then type email pictures in the search box the genie will come out of the lamp, try it and see

What are the advantages, if any, of Bitmap images over JPEG images?
Do bitmap images degrade slower than jpeg images?
The reason why I ask is because I have saved a lot of bitmap images to a USB flash drive, but they are tacking up a lot of space on the stick. If there is no obvious difference then I’ll start saving images in jpeg format instead, to save on space.

Answer:What are the advantages of Bitmap over JPEG images

There's no loss of image quality with bitmap files - even when they're compressed.
The JPEG file format is perfect for photographs as most of the detail is retained and the file sizes are massively smaller than bitmaps. However, it's a "lossy" format which will lower the quality of the image a tad and introduce some unwanted artefacts. Having said that though, most folks will never notice so it's a perfect format for the average home user.
Professional photographers and graphic artists nearly always work with bitmap images.

I need to markup clinical images...e.g. where on the body the pain field is. It'd be a .jpeg and I would paste it to a .docx. It does not seem to me that Drawboard can be used for this image markup and saved.

I recently bought a new computer (XP Media Center Edition, Dell XPS600) and unfortunately I'm having some problems already. One of them is with JPEG images I view while browsing the Internet. About half the images I view will partially change colors and become distorted. Occasionally, I can just click 'back' and reload the page the image is on, and it will be fine... but more often than not, I can't restore the original image without deleting the JPEG from the temporary internet files folder. Here's an example:

The original JPEG should look like this:

Several instances of clicking 'back' and reloading the page led to these images:

I haven't noticed the distortion problem with images of other types (bmp, png, gif) but it seems that these types have some problems displaying - about half the time I try to view them, the images do not load and display the "not available" logo. I don't know if these incidents are related to my problem with JPEGs.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Answer:Corrupted JPEG images while browsing the Internet

Hi, and welcome to TSF!
Does this only happen in Internet Explorer? Have you tried FireFox? I would guess that if it works in FireFox, that there is something wrong with IE and a repair install might be the solution. Also, have you done any virus/malware scans lately?

Hey everyone,

So I recently tried to open a .jpeg image that I downloaded from google images to make it my computer wallpaper. But for some strange reason, the icon for it is just a blank icon with a couple of cogs on it. Whenever I try to open the file, it immediately deletes the window, and whenever I try to open it as an administrator, the window that pops up is just an image a bunch of code. I'm having a lot of trouble finding out what this means, I've been scanning the internet for the better part of an hour trying to figure this thing out. If anyone has a solution, or can put me in the right direction for finding a solution, it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Canon

This quirk was not there before, so I assume I have somehow inadvertently changed a setting somewhere. Any ideas anyone ??

Many times I send and receive e-mails with jpg pictures which, upon arrival, turn into nothing but a large square border with a boxed little red X in the upper right corner of it.

What causes that? How can I prevent it? How can I fix it? What determines when it'll happen? Sometimes I can forward one to somebody, and it'll be fine when it gets there!

Some of the JPEG images I have in folders won't display. It just shows a blank icon where the photograph or picture should be.
Whenever I try clicking on one of the blank picture icons Windows Photo Viewer automatically tries to open it up and I get the following error message: "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because either Photo Viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Viewer."

Keep in mind these are just plain old JPEG images. They displayed just fine in Windows XP which was what I was using when I transferred these pictures from out of my old computer.

If it is Windows Photo Viewer that is the culprit, then how do you update it? If it is something else, what could it be?

Thank you

I am about to pull my hair out. I use Win XP Pro-MSN dialup internet access-and a hotmail.com email address. For some reason MSN will no longer let me send or receive emails that have attachments in the .jpeg or .jpg format. I get the error "access to the following potentially unsafe attachments has been blocked". I can go to the hotmail.com website and login to my email account & send these files just fine. The hotmail site uses Trendmicro.com virus scanning while MSN uses McAfee. I spent all afternoon trying to work with MSN tech support on this. They had me change everything except my underwear & would never consider the problem was theirs. This problem has only started occurring within the last few weeks. The files I am trying to send are family photos I've taken with a Sony digital camera & are not infected with any virus. Does anyone else have this problem. Thank you.
