I can't find Linux drivers for my hardware!

Question: I can't find Linux drivers for my hardware!

I would like to install Linux on my PC as a dual-boot system with Windows XP but after checking many websites I can't find any drivers for my Gigabyte GA-6WMM7 Motherboard or my Intel 810 chipset, among other things. I wondered if anyone here knew the location of these drivers or if there is a generic driver that will work for all these. Most of my other hardware will work, but i'm not sure about my Celeron II 700Mhz Processor. Any help would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: I can't find Linux drivers for my hardware!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am currently running XP pro, and I am seriously considering Ubunto.I have 'C' drive in a removable cradle, (all of my data is on two SATA drives which are fixed and backed up to an external HDD).I can install Ubunto on to a spare drive, so I can return to XP easily if required.I have some hardware which I am not sure if they will work on Ubunto as I have not been able to find suitable drivers.Main thing is a Microsoft mouse, which has a button to enable sections of the screen to be magnified (my wife has sever visual impairment and this essential for her to use PC), and I have a DVB-T stick which I use frequently for recording programs to use on my MP4 gadget. So can we find drivers for most hardware out there?Stroller

Answer:M30X-124: can't find drivers for linux and windows 2000

Hi,

Sorry, Toshiba only provides drivers and tools for the delievered OS (M30X: WinXP). But you can search at google for suitable W2k drivers. I think you will find them!

Win2003 drivers can be a problem because it is a Server OS and there are not so much notebook drivers available!

For Linux I have found 3 interessting sites for you!

my astranet ia101 scanner has a problem. i need to reinstall it to my pc, because of a hard drive crash and the techs had to wipe and reformat my drive, so i have to put everything back on it. i have reinstalled it before many times with no problem, but this time for some reason, my computer won't find the device driver for it now. i installed it with my disc that came with the scanner, and i also tried with a download from the umax website. when i restart my pc, windows recognizes that there is new hardware, but cannot find the driver. when i click on the vistascan icon, it tries to find it, but says, error, scanner access failed. everytime i run the windows add hardware wizard, it says cannot locate drivers for the scanner. the windows hardware wizard always asks me to put the windows 98 cd in, but the drivers aren't there. they are on the scanner cd and on my computer somewhere. after i installed the vistascan from the disc, it said successful install. the vista shuttle and the copy utility are fine- just the vista scan. how do i solve this? i have windows 98 on my pc.

Answer:win98 won't find hardware drivers

Have you used the "have disk" option and directed the path to the driver on the installation CD?

So, my computer suddenly started finding a handful of devices it can't find drivers for. I didn't add any new hardware. After trying all I could think of I resorted to trying a clean install. Sadly that did not help.

Can someone advise me on where to begin to diagnose this problem? Obviously I'm not very experienced with this.

I'm sure you'll need more information to truly help with this, but I'm not sure what to provide or how to obtain it.

Answer:No new hardware, can't find drivers even after clean install

Please provide more information. What do you mean your system is finding devices for which it can't find drivers? Please explain IN DETAIL.

Also, after the clean install did you download and install the chipset driver followed by all other appropriate drivers? Look in device manager - any yellow or red symbols?

PC with Windows ME. When instaling new hardware, system searches for drivers and frequently fails to find them, apparently because it is looking in the directory. For example, I was installing a USB linked magnetic card reader and the following message appeared in a window headed 'New Hardware Found'."File USBNTMAP.SYS was not foundWindows needs the disk labelled Windows Millenium Edition to continue. This disk may be provided by your computer or device manufacturer.Copy files from C:|Program files\Creative\....."If I then use the browse button to point the system at C:\Windows\system32\driversit sometimes works, and anyway the files it is looking for are invariably some within the Windows directory. Is there any way I can get the system to look in the right place automatically in stead of looking in the Creative soundblaster directory for a standard Windows ME driver??!!??Any help will be gratefully received.MJ

Answer:New hardware instal fails to find drivers

sorry i dont know why its not working.i would download them from the manufacturers website that way you will get the latest version of the driver.the ones on the disc will be out of date.

Hi all, until last night everything was ok. After I'd cleaned the computer and plugged everything back in windows decides it can't find drivers for any of my usb devices (keyboard, mouse, camera, gamepad, joystick).

When it finds them it says new hardware found. with 3 choices:
Locate and install driver
Ask me again later
Don't show this message again

So I click the first option, and it searches for drivers but...'Could not find driver software'. I then click 'Check online for a solution' with no luck.

These devices are so basic that the manufacturers don't supply drivers for the products; they should all be with the OS.

What can I do guys? I'm a keen photographer and not being able to upload my photos via the camera or card reader is a real issue for me.

By the way the above process happens for all the usb hardware I have except the printer, usb flash drive, mouse and keyboard (luckily!)

Question: Linux Hardware

I am thinking about movin to linux from microsoft and i was wordering if i need any speical hardware for example for motherboards and so on to work with SUSE Linux.

Answer:Linux Hardware

Linux works with pretty much all kit nowadays. If you want to satisfy yourself before you take the plunge then try one of the live CD's.These CD's allow you to run a full Linux distribution from CD without installing it on your hard drive. You will need to make sure that your BIOS allows you to boot from the CD/DVD drive. This way you will be able to see what Linux can do without actually doing anything to your HD. If you go to click here you can download their live CD (which is really a DVD becuase it won't fit on a CD) or you can go to click here which will fit on a CD.Welcome to Linux and have a lot of fun!Pusherman

Can anyone here tell me what mainboards and other hardware they've successfully got working with linux (any distribution especially debian)? I'm trying to compile a list of items that i can use to build a linux system and i'd like the least amount of problems/compatibility issues. My main concern is in choosing a mainboard.

I'm interested in hearing from users of this forum who have built systems before or dealt with hardware compatilibity issues.

I got my abit NF7-M working fine with linux, save for the onboard video which was replaced it runs fine. I run slackware. Initially I was under the impression that you could not use the onboard LAN for net because it is nforce2 chipset. After I poped in another NIC and DL and install nvidia drivers for the mainboard it worked fine all on its own.

i'm hoping someone can give me some tips on building a system that will have the linux os on it. i'm not sure which version of linux exactly, but are there general guidelines for most linux systems as far as hardware compatibility?
i did a little searching on it and could only find red hat linux compatibility lists. it seems to be somewhat vague, but i'm hoping someone has first hand experience with it, and can help me out.
i had built a system that this guy (the one who runs linux os) was going to buy from me, but someone else bought it first. he said that the specs on it were nearly perfect, except the geforce video, and said something else about pentium instead of athlon.

here's the specs:
1.67ghz athlon (2000+) 266fsb

What are the bottlenecks that slow software raid down in my planned system?

I'm in the process of building a media server.
Goals: Fast average write speed to hard drive, at least 140 MByte/s.
OS: MythBuntu or something similar like MythTV, definitely Linux.
processor: AMD 64 4000+ 2.41ghz, 1 gig ram, with plans to upgrade the ram to 4 gigs.
Vid: dual nvidia 7800, but I don't use sli (ie wasting 1) bc I want to use 2 video outputs, which does not work with sli enabled (MoBo limit). I may upgrade, if necessary.
The primary use of this storage is large files 400Mbyte to 10 Gbyte.
I would like to use 4 or 5 to 7 Hard drives in a raid 5.
My motherboard has 5 sata2 ports, and supports fake raid. But I think software raid will perform better.
I'm planning on either using 4 or 5 drives, or getting an sata2 pci card and putting 1 or 2 more drives for a total of 6 or 7. placing 1 or 2 drives on the pci card depending on bandwidth of the card.

The primary use for the higher speed will be to transfer a large quantity of movies from dvd to the HD, with 3 or more DVD drives reading at full speed. 3 internal drives, any additional drives will be exterior.

I have read through a lot of websites on raid drive setup, but most of those sites are using much slower/smaller drives than I chose (mine are simply newer). This is making it hard to estimate the performance bottlenecks.

I chose software raid as my drives are fast enough that only really expensive hardware controllers... Read more

Is it better to use the drivers provided by toshiba (nvidia, synaptics,...) or should i install it from the official hardware manufacterer as they have more recent drivers than the one on toshiba site.

Answer:Question about drivers (hardware manufacterer vs toshiba drivers)

Generally speaking the drivers from Toshiba page should be used since such drivers are tested by Toshiba.
For example the display driver from Toshiba supports some kind of overheating protection and clock down the GPU if the temperature would be too high? in such case the performance would be decreased for a short time but this would lower the temperature? as far as I know the drivers from chip manufacturers don?t support such feature?
So the usage of such drivers is your own risk?

At the other hand you can install Synaptics drivers from manufacturer page. There is no risk.

So I was having some mobo trouble (IDE 0 wasn't working), and figured it was time for an upgrade. Bought a Asus A8N-E, and an AMD 64X2 4200+, and a BFG 7900 GTX.

Me, being entirely too eager and stupid, installed all of this without having uninstalled my previous video card drivers (ATI Radeon 9200).

Now when I boot up into windows I get the blue screen of death with the following error:
0x0000007E (blah blah)
With no reference to a driver whatsoever.

When I boot into linux it complains about my xorg.conf file.

I tried putting the old mobo back in but it doesnt even make it to the loading windows screen.

I also tried using the Recovery Console to disable whatever had ATI in the name under listsvc, but to no avail.
Thanks,

Also, is there a hardware info program for Linux that is similar to cpu-z? I'm looking for something that will provide thorough, human readable information. At the least:
-cpu multiplier
-fsb
-memory speed
-memory timings

I've heard of HardwareLiSter, but I looked through a few screenshots and I'm not sure if it has what I want. Does anyone have any recommendations?

A client, a car dealership, has an 8 year old linux server they want to update.

I'm not a linux guru by any means, I've only been using Ubuntu for a few months on a laptop which isn't my primary system.

This old install has no GUI environment, it's all CLI, and I'm not sure of the distro. In fact, I'm not even sure there is a distro at all, it may have been a scratch build for this one purpose.

I'm wondering what kind of problems I might run into with upgrading this? I know windows will fall on its face if you image an existing install to an other box if, for example, the motherboard chipset happens to be different.

I'm guessing the first thing I need to know how to do, is how to install new drivers through the CLI of an unknown distro. I'd probably also need to update the kernel.

Or, if you guys think this would be the path of least resistance, installing a new one from scratch, and just copying the profile over?

Thanks a lot guys.

Answer:Upgrading hardware on an 8 year old linux install

What is this thing doing? DB, web, etc server? If you only need to move a mySQL DB or web server this will be real easy.

uname -a will tell you what kernel its running and many times cat /etc/*release will tell you the distro.

Depending on how it's being used, the best choice will likely be a recent distro on new hardware.

Hi, I just added 3 more computers (2 x Linux and 1 x WinXP) to my 'cluster' of '[email protected]' computers here.

Computers #14 and #15 are Ubuntu Linux 9.04 desktop systems, which (as I have mentioned before) are very useful to have around, when 'rescuing' files that are otherwise inaccessible using Windows, of any variety.

Computer #16 was built mainly as a place to put the GTS 250 Graphics card from my #1 computer, when I am able to get the new GTX 480 'Fermi' card (my #1 system has a 700-Watt power supply, to permit the GTX 480 to be 'dropped right in' when it becomes available here in Canada).

My current [email protected] score, which you can see here:
PlanetAMD64's active Members at 23:00 UTC-7
(I am username 'art_l_j_PlanetAMD64') is up to 8,500,958 total points, which puts me at #899 out of 1,381,662 individuals and entities (such as Universities) who are currently Folding (as we call running the '[email protected]' software).

My points-per-week score, at 550,024, puts me in the top 125 of all Folders, so my ranking (currently #899) is predicted to rise to #667 within the next 30 days.

So without further ado here is the complete hardware list of my 16 computers:

Folding Machine #1:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
CPU: AMD Phenom II Black Edition X4 Quad-Core 965 3.4 GHz (AM3)
MB: ASUS M4A79T Deluxe
RAM: 4GB DDR3, 1333MHz
HDD: 1.0TB (2 x 500GB)

Hi.The fan in my Lenovo 3000 V100 doesn't seem to work.- On Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) the laptop overheats sometimes to point of shutting down.  - I don't use Windows, but I tried a bootable Windows CD and it seems the fan isn't working.  I can't hear it and it doesn't seem that any air is coming out of the fan.  I tried with Thinkpad Fan Controller 0.20 and manually setting the fan speed to the maximum.  I noticed no difference.- When starting the computer I can hear the hard drive the first few seconds, but I don't think I hear the fan so I don't think it's starting at all.  Os is it so quiet? How can I be sure it is a hardware problem?I ask this because a many laptops have problems in Linux with DSDT (a file from the BIOS) than only work on Windows.  And I have had this problem in the past.  (I tried compiling the Linux kernel with a DSDT I fixed myself and posted in this forum 2 years ago, but this time it didn't work).

Answer:Fan not working. Hardware problem, or is it just quiet, or is it Linux and DSDT? How can I know?

I would think if you entered the bios setup on boot, and fan does not run, it may be hardware.Just let it sit (in bios) and see if it comes on.

need to bring up an obsolete box. It was running XP, and all it needs to do is run a .WMV video automatically on startup (looping/ full screen)

It is an old decrepit P3, with 256MB RAM. The original XP install died with the old HDD. I have a replacement HDD, and the WMV file. <Note the system will only boot to CD or HDD (and probably FDD, but I swore off those years ago). Refuses to boot to USB or DVD>

I do not want to do a new XP install, just because it took way to long to start up. I DL'd an iso for mythbuntu and puppy, but I can't seem to get the autostart of the video loop on power on. (the things I found in the googleverse have not helped)

In "Magic Perfect Happy Land", I could download an iso with a small footprint OS, that was just enough to run this video loop. Note that I am not normally a Linux user- I am primarily a Windows kind of guy.

Answer:Light Linux distro for Video on Obsolete Hardware?

Look into an openbox based distro. Crunchbang is a popular choice in that respect. Manjaro openbox also looks pretty good. Get a 32-bit version regardless of the distro you choose. 32-bit distros use less memory.

After that, all you have to do is add a command to the openbox autorun.sh file to run whatever movie player that is available. This is easier than it sounds. The following line would launch a video full-screen in mplayer in repeat mode for example:

mplayer -fs -loop 0 /home/username/video/videofilehere.mp4

The file you need to edit is located in your home directory after you install, which you can open with any text editor. The file may also be available from the start menu as well, but that depends on the distro. Regardless, the autorun.sh file is located here:

/home/user/.config/openbox/autostart.sh

Hi there,

I have an HP Pavilion DV7 2185dx laptop running a freshly installed windows 7 upgrade from windows Vista. Ever since the upgrade my CPU is constantly running at 98-100% all the time meaning I cannot do anything on my PC. After researching a bit online it could possibly be the driver errors I see in device manager?

In device manager I see that I have some drivers missing and all attempts to update these have failed and i've seen other users here post the missing drivers and be directed to the fixes.

I have an asrock 775i65g mobo and originally I had a P4 3.06 GHZ LGA 775 installed but then I installed a C2D E4500 because the mobo supports C2D's. However, I starting to find that a lot of the games I play Lineage 2: The Kamael, and Half-Life 2: Lost Coast are getting much lower fpses like 21 and under when I had much better framerates with my P4 oced to 4 ghz.

Is it because the dual core isn't being used because I've already tried different methods of fixing the dual core. Another problem is that when I set affinity I get a blue screen of death saying INVALID_AFFINITY_SET.
Can anyone please help me? Thanks in advance

Answer:Find my Windows product key from Linux

What do you mean when you say the disc is not from Microsoft, who is it from ? Is it a recovery disc that came with the computer ?

What type of computer is it, laptop or desktop, if the OS came preloaded you should have a sticker on the machine with your product key.

Hi southernlady,

First, you should check out the man pages for dhcp, and dhclient.

Then try the following:
Find the option under the "System Settings" menu -> "network"
or
Run the gui client, system-config-network and then edit the network device to change from manual IP settings to dhcp.

I assume a reboot is required after the change.

Hope this helps,

Hello, I received my flex 2, and popped out the 1TB+8GB hdd, replacing it with a Crucial BX100 256GB SSD. Crucial's website says it's compatible with the Flex 2 - 14, if that accounts for anything. ****My goal is to dual boot w/ Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04 (trying 15.04 now too).****My problem is that Ubuntu's installer won't see my SSD. I even tried looking in gparted, fdisk -l, etc. and all that they show is the USB stick Ubuntu is running from. The SSD shows up in the BIOS and I installed windows 7 on it just fine. I also tried creating the ext4 partition and swap partition from windows, and that solved nothing. Linux problems should be posted in the Linux Forum. Anyway, since I'm already here and typing, I'll give you the download link for the drivers:

But you're on your own for installation. LOL I'm not a Linux guy and my limited experience with Linux was the most frustrating 2 hours of my life as I tried to install a wifi driver. I gave up, reformatted the system and installed Windows XP. :-o

Good luck!

I have created slipstreamed Windows install disc with all my latest SATA/RAID Drivers and the drivers that came with my mobo, works great!
My question is can I do the same thing by editing the ISO, in other words the knoppix 3.8 doesn't recognize my sound card (Audigy2) or my onboard Gigabit Ethernet or my SATA/RAID setup. I am running the disc now on an older workstation and everything runs nice.
If I can update Knoppix with the drivers I need which folders(s) would I modify.

Thanks for any help, this is my first try with Linux and I am hoping to relegate Windows to simply a gaming toy.

Answer:Adding drivers to Linux ISO

Yes and no. It can be done but it will require a little more work than you think.

There are a couple of things you should realize. First, most live linux CD's contain compressed filesystems, usually compressed with a util called cloop, which means you won't be able to add files without decompressing then recompressing. Secondly, drivers in linux aren't a one-fits-all binary like in Windows. You have to compile a driver specifically for your kernel. Doing such requires the kernel sources, which many livecd's don't include for space reasons, and requires a compliler like gcc (some have some don't).

So the basic process is:
1. Install linux on your hard drive with a build environment (and kernel sources)
2. In a subdirectory, decompress the contents of the livecd
3. chroot to that subdirectory, download the drivers, compile and install
4. add any other custom programs and clean up the trash
5. exit chroot and mkisofs on the subdirectory
6. recompress with cloop
7. burn to cd

My best advice is to google for a tutorial on "remastering knoppix" as it will give you a command-by-command breakdown of how to accomplish this.

Inspired by Official nVidia Drivers 28.32, I checked if they have new Linux drivers. And they have, Linux driver 1.0-2802 has been out for a while.

Release Highlights for 1.0-2802:

* GeForce4 and Quadro4 Support
* OpenGLŪ 1.3 with NVIDIA extensions
* Improved IGP and mobile support
* Overlay support for Quadro products
* MPEG acceleration for GeForce4 MX
* Anisotropic filtering support

Answer:nVidia Linux drivers

Yes, I got those.

Don't ask me why, I have NO IDEA, but I have to compile from source and THEN install the rpms as well before it works....

(And then of course editing /etc/X11/xf86config-4 )

Then it works a treat. I don't really play games under Linux but those XMMS visualisations run so much better.....

Does anyone know if there are any Linux drivers available for hp scanjet 3400c scanner,or where I might be able to aquire same?

Answer:linux drivers for hp scanner

What distribution are you using? The reason I ask is the HP is one of the best supported peripherals on Linux. I'm surprised if it isn't supported.

is there a distro that has the nforce2 lan drivers built in? I've found it very difficult to get them installed. I first tried mandrake 9.1, which nvidia didn't make an rpm for.. so i tried to "rpm -rebuild the source rpm, but that only came back with rpmb not installed, which i can't download to install since i have no network, so i'm stuck.

I actually got it working under knoppix, but i have to jump through hoops every time to make the lan actually work (it won't save my settings, and i'd have to re-master the cd, which seems entirely too difficult.

so all that to say, is there a distro out there that automatically supports nforce2 lan/audio. It's nearly impossible for me to install this crap since i have no floppy to use on that machine, and have to keep burning cd's with a single 100k file on them in order to transfer the files...

Also, is there a decent program that will allow me to play DVD's easily? Maybee even something like windows auto-play?

Answer:linux Nforce Lan drivers

Xine and ogle(you'll also need xine-ui and oglegui) play DVDs great!!

As far as the ethernet driver. Install a 2.6 kernel with the mm patchset or the love patchset. They have a reversed engineered Nforce ethernet driver. I've been using it for months, and th eonly weirdness I've noticed is it is a little slower pulling an IP address when coming up on DHCP. Gentoo will boot, and recognize the card, and all you have to do on a 2.4 kernel is "emerge nforce-net" .

Hi,

I need help. I have Qosmio F30 - 112 and I have linux on my pc. I need drivers for the graphic card.

Thank You

Answer:Qosmio F30-112 Drivers for linux

Hi,

sorry, mate but Linux not supported by Toshiba officially. It means that you have to make your own search in Google or asking on other forums if someone has solved a graphic card driver issue.

3 days ago, I went to boot up my Dell XPS 8500 running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit (after having booted it up and used it earlier in the day with no problem, not having recently installed any software or made any configuration changes.) The result was a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner. If I reset the computer, I got the Dell splash screen, but the F2 option to enter setup and the F12 option to choose boot devices did nothing--still got the black screen. I opened the case, removed and replaced the CMOS battery. This allowed me to get into BIOS. I then found that if I change the hard drive from RAID mode (what it's supposed to be, as I have a drive with an SSD cache) to AHCI, I could start to boot Windows, but after a few seconds of the "Starting Windows" screen, I would get a quick flash of a BSOD. I was able to see that the error was STOP, 7B. I was also able to get into the onboard Dell ePSA diagnostics, in which every test passed fine. I was able to boot from a Windows installation USB drive, and use the bootrec tool as many online guides describe. I used all the options and they all reported successful completion, but I still got the BSOD. I also downloaded a bootable standalone ISO of Windows Defender and ran it, and it cleaned up a few malicious files, but this had no effect on booting. Startup Repair and System Restore accomplished nothing, though it did show my Windows installation in the lis... Read more

I have laptop of E Series my model no is: E5-574G-516G, It comes with registered Windows 10 Home Version, But I am linux user I have removed that windows and added linux on that, I am not able to use my touchpad, My touchpad was working perfect in windows 10 but I think there is driver issue in linux, Can you please help me with the driver of this laptop. I have find but I didn't able to find any driver. Thanks

Answer:E5-574G-516G Linux Drivers

Acer doesn't support Linux on your model, so the only way to enable touchpad support on your laptop is to find the official community of your Linux distribution or check if your laptop BIOS has the option to switch touchpad mode.

Hi,Having problems setting up my router on Linux (UBUNTU 7.04) Its wired to the PC and Linux recognises the connection to it, but try to get an internet page open and it just hangs (the web page) so I'm assuming there is no proper connection.I think its the drivers that Linux might have installed with the router - tried to find Linux drivers on the web with no luckAny help would be appreciated :)

Answer:etec PTI-845G Linux Drivers

A router doesn't need and doesn't have drivers , the problem is either at the network connection ( not configured properly ) or the router isn't connected to the Internet , can you access the router set up pages ? Ashley
