Preferred Solution: Seagate Harddrive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

I'm considering a new harddrive, but until I ran across an attractive offer for the 1.5TB, I had been thinking of the 1TB instead. The larger drive has the following specs:

Formatted Capacity : 1.5TB
Interface Type: Serial ATA-300
Buffer Size: 32MB
Spindle Speed: (RPM) 5900 RPM
Average Latency: 4.16 ms
Data Transfer Rate: Buffer to Host Up to 300MBps
Sustained Throughput: Up to 115MBps
Ports and Connectors: 7-pin Serial ATA Connector
Manufacturer Warranty: 5 Year Limited Warranty

The thing that stands out in my eye is that the spindle speed is slow compared to the 1TB, which is 7200 RPM, but I think the warranty is a bit longer.

I recall recently reading an article posted in the forums news board that said that the 1 TB was the fastest drive in it's class, but the sustained throughput of this drive is slightly faster...I think.

The extra 500GBs would definitely be a plus, but would it really perform as well as the 1TB? Is there any other aspect to consider?

Answer:Seagate 1.5TB Harddrive

that...is an odd RPM value for a HD

Hi, I have a 500gb, harddrive wich doesn't start, it worked perfectly before, and now just suddenly it wont start at all. I'm not angry about it yet becuase I still have hope this can get fixed.

I pop the adapter in, nothing happens, plug the stuff to the computer, nothing happens. I got no clue what to do really. IF it can destroy the adapter if I put a ac adapter for a portable computer inte it while it was off, that can be it. OR if it got broken by safely lying in my bag. Just tell me how I can fix this, Please. I'm So thankful for anyone who can help me with this.

A while back I bought a Seagate 1TB harddrive, but until recently it was just stored away and not used.
Recently I wanted to expand a XP system I have containing a M4A79XTD Evo mboard, so I just popped in the 1TB. But, to my surprise, the harddrive showed up as only 32MB. So I went into Ubuntu(dualboot with XP) and format the drive, then restart. Back in XP it finally showed up as 939GB. Then I turned off the computer. When I turned it back on later, the drive was back at showing 32MB.

The only thing that worked was when I used ext2 on Ubuntu to format the drive. I wanted to do a clean OS install on the 1TB, but no OS under the sun wants to install, because it jumps back to showing 32MB. I can only store files with Ubuntu under ext2.

I've tried the drive in other computers, with various cables, external enclosures, etc.

So now my question is, do I have a nice looking paperweight, or do I miss something important?

I noticed on these two drives they have a jumper pin on them
with jumper pin 1.5 g/sec
without jumper pin 3.0 g/sec

If my motherboard is compatible with the 3.0 g/sec transfer rate
can I pull the jumper out, or do the drives only operate at that speed in a raid configuration or is it even worth the hassle ?

Answer:Seagate 500 & 750 gig Harddrive queston

THat jumper is so that the faster Sata 2 (300Gb/s) drives will work on the older Sata (150Gb/s) sata controllers. If your controllers are Sata 2 then yo can remove the jumper and not worry about it.

Hi guys,

I'm really in desperate need of help right now. My harddrive just died and all my essays and school stuff are in it and the due dates are within days.

So I turned on my pc this afternoon, did some stuff and turned it off, then i wanted to turn it on again but the harddrive is no longer detected by BIOS.The bios gives the typical message of no harddrive detected, plz insert boot media and press a key blah blah blah.i also noticed that the whole start up becomes incredibly slow, even for loading the bios setup. I bought this new pc during xmas and its just been a lil bit over 3 months.

seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gbytes
motherboard is Asus P5QL Pro
4gig mem.
geforce 9800gt
intel 2.5Ghz

the machine's been perfectly normal for 3 months except very occassional blue screens, and now the hd is not dectected all of a sudden.

i did not install anything or remove anything in hardware/software,i tried a different sata cable for dvd-rw which is recognized by bios, plugging into a different sata plug on the motherboard, and nothing happens.

when i start the machine i can hear that there's a couple clicks in the harddrive,so obviously its still running, but after that its all silence and there's no activity at all thereafter.

does this indicate a dead harddrive that can only be replaced?is there any chance i can recover the data on the harddrive?

thx tons for any reply!!!

Answer:seagate harddrive problem

This happened like a day ago for me with the same drive. I fixed it by resetting the cmos, it was either that or the cable was loose (because i took it out and put it back in) so check the cables, if that does not do it, try a cmos flash.

EDIT: wait, the cmos flash fixed my 1tb drive, not the 7200.11, my bad.

Could a USB port be damaged when trying to attach the cable from a 1.5 T external harddrive. this harddrive was attached before I got this computer a few days ago.

Answer:Seagate external harddrive 1.5 T

Can't see why it would be?Which having said... if the drive demands more power than the pc - particularly a laptop - can deliver then possibly; but have never come across it.If the drive requires serious power i/p then use an external usb-power adapter to power it?Have you experienced this and this is why you're posting here now?

I have a problem with my Seagate external harddrive. It won't let my computer start. It stops at the BIOS screen and does nothing. I tried pressing the BIOS setup or System recovery but it doesn't work. I found out that my external harddrive was the problem after serveral tries. I took the plug out of my computer and restarted it. It worked fine. I plugged it back in again to the computer and it was detected in Device Manager but not detected on Windows. In Device Manager it said there was no problem at all. However when I clicked computer the external harddrive didn't show up. I also have to mention that I dropped my harddrive accidentally. It keeps making a beeping noise every other second. It was a regular beep, nothing out of the ordinary. I also tried diagnosticing my drive. However that was a problem too. It made another error. I also tried to plug the external harddrive to another computer and it also made the beeping noise and it didn't show up on the otehr computer. I'm starting to think that this is an external error with the parts inside than internal with software and other stuff. I don't think that I like recovering my data with experts because it costs a lot of cash. The ohter option is to replace my drive with another one from seagate. The warranty is still on and won't expire in a while. Oh yeah and I just recently discovered that on the other computer I tested the drive on it starts up when I plug it in before I start the computer.

Answer:seagate external harddrive doesnt spin up

Could be any of several causes:
Harddrive dead
not enough power (try with laptop plugged into mains - not on battery power)
faulty cable
faulty usb port
Is it making the same noise as in this youtube vid?

As the title says, my new Seagate Expansion Portable Drive is not working in the 3.0 slots in the front of my computer. It only works when i plug it into one of my two 2.0 slots on the back of my computer, which are both occupied by my mouse and keyboard, both of them are not backwards compatible. When my Drive is plugged into a 3.0, absolutely nothing happens. i get a green light on the drive, but it does not show up in my bios or in "My Computer". Works perfectly fine in a 2.0 though.

My motherboard is made by gigabyte, and is only about 2 months old, and my drive is 5 months old.

Hi, and thanks in advance to any help. Today I noticed that my Seagate 250gb harddrive is not showing up under my computer as a disk. This happened after a reboot. It is the only usb device plugged into my computer and my taskbar recognizes it with the safely remove hardware icon. Under. It also shows up in disk management as unallocated with no partition. It has been fussy before but has worked fine for awhile now. Is there anything I can do or have I lost all of my data? Also it was pretty full with just 5% freespace on it before this happened. I know I probably should have backed up this data but now I am nervous because I have important stuff on there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problem
- My 500GB Seagate external harddrive can't be recognized in the computer (as if it wasn't there) when plugged via USB
- It makes a repeated beep when connected to a plug
- I called technical support and they charge $300 for data recovery

Question
- If my external harddrive has failed, then what are some methods would Seagate use to recover the data?
- Can't I just open the casing and remove the SATA drive and plug it in with my SATA adapter (i know it voids warranty, but I'd rather have my data back at a cheaper price than to get a replacement harddrive)
- Isn't it possible that the casing might've broke, not the hard drive itself?
- What are your thoughts on this one?

It sounds like your drive has failed. Anytime a drive makes noise such as those, it means the read/write head is bouncing across the data platters.

You may wish to look into Data Recovery or to return the drive to us for an exchange

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

What does that mean?

Answer:Seagate External harddrive failed, back for $300?

There is the possibility that it could be the encloser that has died.
The only way find out is to purchase another enclosure. However you will void any change at warranty if you pop open seagate's enclosure.

So I have a seagate External drive which had been working perfectly fine for me right upto yesterday.
My kids were watching a film via the drive connected to my ps4 and all worked well but when I went to connect it to my netbook to manage some files it was no longer visible.
I've done extensive google searches but not come across anything that would seem to fix my problem.
The drive is visible in drive management but not in disk management. I have tried or in all the uso ports but that makes no difference.
The drive now no longer shows up when I plug it into the ps4 which leafs me to suspect that it's had it and I've lost whatever was on it.
One other thing to note is that when I connect it to my netbook it makes a noise like the drive inside is spinning to try and come to life.
Having said this however it had just decided to show up on my netbook so I am copying the files off of it right now to make sure they're not lost. I'm going to say however that this is going to need replacing right?

I have Windows 7 Home premium 64bit as I recently got a new computer, and to my surprise my seagate external Harddisk did not work. If I go to the Devices section, it is listed as Desktop. I have tried many things such as, rebooting, trying different USB, Assigning A letter to the Expansion and a few others as you will see in my screenshots. Just before I forget my old PC 32bit Windows 7 Ultimate, automatically detected my 500gb Seagate 500gb External Harddisk so I cannot see a problem with the Harddrive or with my computer as it is brand new and fully functioning. Below are my screenshots.

As you can see from these images non of the fixes on the fourm, or on seagate work. If you have any fix please reply to this post as soon as you can, or on the other hand any questions. I will be very grateful.

Sorry about the thumbnail, Not sure what happened there.

SATA or PATA????

Have you tried to remove it from the ext case and installed it into the computer...to check if any of the electronics in the external case failed.
could be something with the usb drivers in the new machine... might try unstalling from the device manager the usb controllers, maybe the composite device then turn the machine off and let windows reinstall 'em again and see if the drive is picked up.
At this point I'd be asking just how important is the data on this HD... I'd even go so far as see if I could put the HD into a friends machine,(or old 'puter), to see if it could be picked up???? Be sure and copy the data off the HD while you continue to trouble shoot the drive.
From experience..... the only drive I've not been able to finally detect ended up as a dead drive, "bfh"

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and post that It was working fine without any issues. I have two external drive connected to it.

1. 1 TB Iomega powered drive. - now RAW
2. 2TB seagate external drive.

The 1tb drive suddenly became RAW and I wasn't able to access it. before it happened, I had removed some virus detected in the drive by the AVG antivirus. Post that once or twice it got disconnected and after that the drive became RAW. I understand the file system might have got corrupted since couple of times my system faced powercuts and before I could shut it down the system cut off from electricity as my UPS died on me.

I haven't formatted the disk at all, as I have all my important data in this HD as it was my backup drive for office and personal use.

Disk Management: shows the drive is RAW but a healthy Partition.

I opened the hard drive casing, tried connecting the drive directly to the internal sata cable but the same didn't read even then and still shows as RAW drive. I got a Storite USB to SATA adapter and tried that, the drive is now running fine(as it sounds) with intermittent kind of noise (clicking etc.,) for sometime and then disappears. After directly connecting the drive atleast the below softwares are able to read the data in the drive but unable to recover it.

I have tried recovering data using the below softwares.

1. EaseUS DAta recovery - took too much time to complete reading - 17% in more than 24 hours- stopped it.
2. M3 DAta recover... Read more

Answer:External 1TB harddrive(Iomega - seagate inside) RAW drive

My recommendation is to use [email protected] Recovery Pro. I had a similar situation (raw indication) on a drive a few months back and I tried several of the leading data recovery apps, and the one I recommended is the one that found the most stuff -- nearly everything. It took nearly a whole day to do an in-depth scan, but in the end, it was worth it. It's free to install and try out, but you need to buy a license to do any serious recovery work.

Anyone use the Seagate Replica software that comes with the 2T External Hardrive? This is the GoFlex Desk series of external harddrives.

The software does an automatic backup of all your computers harddrives and logical drives and backs up any changes periodically to the external hardrive. It is suppose to allow full recovery (it includes a boot disk, linux based for restoring from the backed up 'image').

Anyone use it, and does it successfully restore the 'image' in case of a full crash?

I have just purchased the Lenovo IdeaCentre 510 Tower PC [i7]. It came with Windows 10 Home OS. Within the set up, it asked me whether I wanted to install updates to Windows 10 - i said 'yes'. It took a good couple of hours to complete the whole set up of the desktop, but according to the log, all Windows updates appear to have been successfully installed. (I mention this because I later found something on Lenovo's website about updating to Windows 10 when setting up your Lenovo for the first time - it mentioned trouble which may include the damaging or disabling of hardware? I can't seem to find this again, or else i would post a link. I think this may have been referring to upgrades to earlier windows versions rather than upgrades for Windows 10 applied to a machine which is sold with Windows 10 already installed.) My desktop seems to be up and running but I have just attempted to connect my Seagate Backup Plus portable drive using the USB port and it will not recognise it (I tried this on several ports).  I can feel the Seagate working but it does not show up under My Computer or anywhere else I can see.  I have tested the USB port by inserting a regular USB pen drive and it DOES recognise this. The Seagate previously worked on my Windows Surface Pro 3 with no trouble and I have all of my files backed up on it.  Hope somebody can help me figure out what is going wrong...  Many thanks!

Yes you can but none of those products offer a decent defragging method and defragging is not really required that much either.

Hi, trying to reformat a laptop and a re-install Windows XP. Getting the "unable to delete extended partitions while logical drives exist" message in Fdisk, but all logical drives have been erased.I don't know what make of HDD the laptop has, but am I safe to use the Seagate Disk Wizard Starter Edition to erase/zerofill the drive ready for XP to go back on?Thanks.

Answer:Using Seagate Starter Disc on Non-Seagate drive,

Might not be a good idea, as all it does is little more than FDISK or Windows XP Setup. Yes, Windows XP Setup. Simply pop the CD in the drive, restart the laptop (to boot from the CD) and it will give you a screen allowing you to choose your partitions and filing systems. For safety, use NTFS file systems. When you press the Continue key (F9 I think), it will then re-partition and format your drives for you!Howzat?

Diagnostic Tool.Ok, HDD got winxp installed fine, but I always like to check the HDD when there new so I downloaded the Seagate HDD for my SATA HDD and it will go to 99% only of the Short Diagnostic test boot from floppy. My Motherboard doesn't have SATA II and the HDD is a SATA II but there are no required jumper settings required to knock it back to 150 SataSop because it will not let me test the hdd would you suspect I have a problem with the HDD ?

Answer:Seagate ST380817AS will not test with Seagate

If XP is installed fine and you can read and write to the drive then I wouldn't worry.

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
"\windows\system32\config\system"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Windows Setup Disk cannot find Harddrive, even with a brand new harddrive installed.

Hi, and welcome to TSF. If it's still under warranty I would take it back to the suppliers.

Hi,

I recently had a very strong magnet. The magnet was then stuck (By a child) to my laptop. I then had errors on boot. I tried reinstalling Vista with the restore disk, but I recieved "Error - Cannot set temp path".

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Is it possible that another part of the computer was damaged by the magnet? Ram?

Thank's,

Tom

I have pretty old secondary hard drive (11 years) and currently in power settings there is an option to put hard drive in sleep mode if it's been idle for X minutes. Is it a good idea to disable this setting and let the harddrive spin all the time, since as I know, frequently enabling/disabling hard drives makes more damage than never putting harddrive to sleep.

Answer:Harddrive health with harddrive auto-stop in idle

Is the drive going to sleep now ?

You should consider buying a new drive to replace that one, then copy your data over before it dies

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

Thank you

My T400 (bought last July) harddrive dead on me Sunday. I called helpcenter and received a replacement harddrive today. It was very fast. They asked me to return the old one. I have a concern about the security of my old harddrive. There are lots of personal information (data and files) on the old harddrive. If I return the old one, is there a chance my personal data be leaked? Is there any way I can delete the data and file on the old harddrive? I have no access to my old harddrive now. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated greatly. Thank you for your time.

Answer:New harddrive from lenovo to replace my dead old harddrive

It will almost certainly be trashed, but you can't be 100% sure.  If you have a big magnet around, you could set the old one on it for a while - that should do the trick.

Hi all!

I recently purchased a new WD Cavier Black with the 32 MB cache. I would like to transfer all my HD contents [including windows vista ultimate] from my older WD 16MB cache HD to this brand spanking new WD Cavier Black HD.

Is it possible to do this without flaws and so that it will work exactly as before?

If yes, can you direct me to the correct information to do this please?

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

The system in which I would like to do this has these components:

Thermaltake M9 Cool Case
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit w/SP1
Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L
Intel Q6600
Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro

Hello,

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

Hi,

This morning a fan in my case was making strange noises (either CPU or GPU fan I think) and so I turned my computer off. I turned it on a little later and the computer was making a really odd clicking noise, so I unplugged each harddrive in turn to see which was causing it. I removed the problem drive (not the one with my XP installation on) and then turned the computer on again. This time it just said could not detect boot disk. I've tried installing XP again, but it gets as far as loading all the setup files and then my PC reboots. The bios still detects the harddrive still in.

The harddrives are just normal IDE 120gb drives (the removed one is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 and the one still in is a Barracuda Seagate). I don't understand why the first stopped working (it is at most 6 months old) and why the 2nd one's installation is not detected (it is only a month or 2 old). Up til today, my computer was working perfectly. At the moment my whole computer is useless and the fan is still making the same weird noise occasionally.

Thanks.

Answer:One harddrive died, other harddrive's XP not detected

Welcome to Techspot

It sounds like the Drive you removed was the Primary, so the system can't find an MBR.
Also if that is right did you change the Jumper on the Slave left in your box?
Buy a new Fan, why take a chance ?

I just purchased these two items:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817146063

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822153012

and the problem is that the coolmax enclosure wont read the harddrive. I installed it correctly (this is not my first 2.5 external hdd), and the computer detects the harddrive. It says that it is installed and ready to use, but now drive is popping up in "my computer". I dont think that the harddrive is to big for the enclosure, its only 40gb and most enclosures maxes out at 40gb. I could not find out what this enclosure's max compatibility is, so i hope that this is not the problem.

It is not the enclosure that is broken, because i put a different harddrive in the coolmax enclosure and it works. And i tried the Fujitsu hdd in another enclosure and it does not work. So it is definitly the hdd

The harddrive is a ATA-6 and the coolmax enclosure is a IDE ATA 100. I dont know what the 100 stands for, but i dont think that is the problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a gift for my girlfriend and i really want this to work.

Answer:2.5 harddrive enclosure will not read the harddrive

Have you foratted the drive? . . Windows will not "see" a drive until it has been formated.

Right click on My Computer . . select Manage . . disc management . . right click on the drive and select format

I currently have a laptop that is a few years old, anyhow I am building my own computer with a friend of mine. I have a external 120 gig Western Digital External Harddrive hooked up to my laptop now. (The external harddrive is brand new) I need a harddrive for the new computer I am building and was wondering would it work if i opened up the external harddrive casing and removed it from there and installed it in my computer i am building. Whats your thoughts on the change in power supply and could it work and what?

Pat

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.

hey everyone, my mom's computer isnt working correctly. it turns on but it doesnt boot up. nothing shows up on the monitor. she has very important files and links that are saved to her computer that she needs asap.

my first thought was maybe i could access her computer through the router that we share but other websites told me its impossible without remote connection. and we cannot setup connects or access her computer at the moment.

i would like to know if it would be a good idea to take her harddrive out and put it into another computer. id rather not put it into my computer (just in case something goes wrong) but my brother has a laptop and could we put her harddrive in his? just temporarily so we can get to those files.

is that the best idea? to transfer her harddrive? if so is it okay that its going into a laptop and not a desktop computer....

Answer:transfering harddrive (harddrive problem)

You're best bet it to get a 2.5 Adapter for laptop HDDs then you would take that adapter and connect it to a desktop CD-ROM IDE 2 channel 3.5 Ribbon cable goes into the adapter. There you could transfer files off that drive. That's how it's done in IT repair shop. Below cost $6.99.

can get it off here or try newegg or wherever you want go to a local store to get..

It also looks like this various version of the adapter

They all work..

My grandma needed more harddrive space on her pc so I installed an 80 gb harddrive on her pc. Right now it's just her slave drive. Her c harddrive is only 20gb, so could I just copy everything on that harddrive to the 80gb and make that the master hard drive and the old one the slave? Or would that cause problems? I want to do this so she can continue saving files to her c harddrive instead of a different harddrive.

Answer:Is it posible to change the c harddrive to another harddrive?

You would need to create an image of the the current 20GB drive and map it onto the 80GB drive (most ghosting/imaging utilities allow you to expand the 20GB partition to the full size of the drive without issue). The most common way to go about doing this is with Norton Ghost, but it's not free. There's a few Linux boot disks that can do it as well I believe, but I don't know any off the top of my head. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion for a free boot disc.

I just recently bought a used computer to replace the one I had which died on me. For some reason, my old harddrive isn't being recognized as the main hard drive when I remove the new one and plug my old one in. Both harddrives are recognized when I have my old one plugged up with the extra power and IDE cable, so I was wondering if it is possible to copy the contents of my old drive to the new one and have it where it transfers all of my installed software over without having to reinstall everything?

Answer:Harddrive to harddrive data transfer?

So what you tried to do is get WinXP to boot after it was installed on a different computer. This usually does not work well unless the Motherboard onthe new computer is almost identical to the old one. At the very least you would want to uninstall all drivers that were istalled as part of the old motherboard then do a repair installation of Windows XP. Then again if your installation of Windows is an OEM version of Windows it is not legal to use it on a second computer even if the second computer is a replacement for the first. If this is a retail copy of Windows then you can do it. You would need also the drivers for the new system.. As far as transfering installed programs from one hard drive to another and have them work properly if at all, it is not likely that you will succeed in doing so as installed programs make changes to the registry so that windows will know where to go look for the files to operate these programs. Just transferring the programs will not make the changes needed to your registry that an installation would make.

I am looking at my friend's 2 yrs old PC mainly due to not booting up. I just found out that his pc's 10 Gb harddrive has bad sectors of only 700Kb after using scandisk so I reinstall windows myself. It has booted up no problems and running fine as usual but is it necessary to buy a new harddisk? After all, it runs fine even though there are still 700Kb bad sections on existing harddisk. Advice will be much appreciated, thanksGary

Answer:Bad sectors in harddrive - need a new harddrive??

Assuming you reformatted the HD, did the bad sectors show during Formatting or was it some other software that decided you had bad sectors? If it was formatting that disclosed the problem then it may be true. If not it might be a spurious warning and could be ignored.

Question: Seagate or WD?

Hi,

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250 GB (ST3250820AS) installed on my Mac Pro. I've been given a Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB HDD. I was wondering if it was worth me using this WD as my main hard drive instead of the Seagate. Which is faster?

Thanks

Answer:Seagate or WD?

well as far as i can tell they're both 7200 rpm (without looking anything up) but you might not notice much difference

it depends on the caches of the drives though, the wd one might have a 16mb one (again, i'm doing this from memory) but it depends on if you want the hassle of transferring all your programs and settings over

personally i'd put the wd in the pc as a slave drive

you probably wouldn't notice much difference in access speed but both drives have the same capacity so you wouldn't benefit a whole lot from changing, really

Answer:WD or Seagate?

Everyone has their own opinion about hard drive companies. It basically comes down to which company you have had good luck with. For me that is WD (pauses to knock on wood).

Are these drives for a laptop? They are both 5400rpm. If they are for a desktop get 7200rpm drives. They will be faster.

Question: -1 Seagate

Rebooted the computer a few hours ago, heard several loud clicks followed by a thunk sound and my start-up froze at the windows XP screen...after spending about an hour trying to figure out which drive was the issue I went into my bios and found that my prized 500 drive was not being detected...pulled the cable and windows booted fine

Now then I have to figure out a way to try and salvage the data off of a drive that refuses to boot when it's plugged it and won't even show up in the bios...if anyone knows any dos based recovery tools that would be very nice

But yeah, I have no where to archive this stuff assuming I can even pull it off successfully, and although it isn't anything crucial, it still took hours and hours of downloading to get all that stuff...you start to realize that regardless of a "5 year warranty" that doesn't mean jack if you lose everything on the drive itself

I guess it's partly my fault and I should have done some reading, as we all know the larger the drive is the more platters that drive will contain and thus the more heat it will produce...in the case of Seagate drives with three or more platters, there is an issue with the controller chip within the drive frying after a duration of intensive reading and writing...therefore if you want a drive 250 or larger, I advise you avoid Seagate as they do not live up their reputation with larger drives

WD next time for me

Answer:-1 Seagate

western digital has more expensive hard drives

my computer's hard drive was 40 GB, bought 2 years ago, for $120!

now, you can get a maxtor 80GB hard drive for $50....

in my opinion, i would go for maxtor, just for the price...

i recently ordered netflix with a dvr, the installer mentioned that many people use a dvr expander to add additional space for their hdd. is this possible? and how do i go about installing it?

Answer:seagate dvr expander as hdd

If you plan on connecting one to your DVR, you may want to check with your cable provider to make sure the DVR box has the ports turned on. I know one cable company that disables them. From what I can tell you would only need to plug the USB into the DVR USB port.

If it is your DVR, you might want to check with the manufacturer to make sure this feature would work for you. I would hate to see someone spend the money and find out the DVR is not capable of using it.
((I worked at an ISP for over 10 years and the USB feature was disabled.. lots of pissed of customers))

hey weird problem, i tried d/l'ing Seatools yesterday, the 1.44 fdd version, when you go to put it on the floppies it only loads one disk, its suppose to be a 2 disk program, it loads one and exits, also the drive i'm trying to run the diganostic tools on just freezes in the middle of the test. I can run whatever test is the online one and it comes up with drive is ok etc. but the CD or the floppy tools just freeze and have to reboot. The CD version of Seatools runs fine on my other seagate drive, whats up with this, never had that happen on a drive before.

Hey all,
I thinking of getting an SSD or hybrid ssd to speed up my desktop this christmas. I don't need it for the storage space; im strictly thinking speed-wise.. app launching etc.
I can't afford much, so im debating between a Seagate Momentus XT and a typical SSD, prob around 40gb (just enough to put my OS and program files on it).
Any thoughts?
I don't want to spend too much money because my Mobo is SATA 3 capable, just waiting for prices to come down.
thanks,
*EQL*

Answer:Seagate Momentus XT or SSD??

Hi, I've has a Seagate Momentus Hybrid HD, in my laptop, since August. It boots up Windows Ultimate r32 bit OS really fast. 500gig in capacity.

Much cheaper than a full SSD drive. You will probably find that a 40 gig SSD ends up too small in capacity, and leaves little room for expansion.

Ultimately, of course, full SSD drives will become cheaper, or capacity will increase for the same price, but that is probably years off at the moment.

Remember, these drives are for laptops.

Question: Seagate Trouble

I have a 500 GB Seagate Go external hard drive I have used for about a year. I have files and pictures saved to it that are not backed up anywhere else. Suddenly it has stopped working. When I plug it into my laptop I get a beeping noise for a short time and then it stops. In Device Manager it says it is not plugged in even when it is. Is there any way to fix this without losing my files and photos and without spending hundreds of dollars? I'm a beginner with these things so need to explain it to me so I understand what you are talking about. Thanks if you can help. Lesson learned about backing up backups! Hope I can get my files and photos back because I am heart sick at the thought I may have lost everything.

I have an older system I am converting to a data storage server. It has an Asus P5GD2 Deluxe motherboard. Windows XP is installed on a seperate disk as I want these drives for storage only. I am attempting to install 3 Seagate 1 TB drives on the onboard Sil3114R raid controller for use in a raid 5 array.

Retail box ST310005N1AS-RK drives.
7200.12 Firmware CC36

Bios for the controller is set to RAID. On boot the system hangs when the the bios gets to the point where the Sil3114R bios is detecting the drives. It lists the first drive and just stops. I have tried various combinations of 1 drive, all 3 drives, different ports out of the 4 available, etc...

I have also tried connecting the same drive to the onboard ITE 8212 controller and boot is fine and the drive is seen properly in Windows.

This doesn't seem to be related to the recent Seagate firmware issue I have been reading about. Any ideas?

Thanks

Answer:Seagate 1TB problem

A bit more research. This seems to be the same issue I am having.

Question: SEAGATE problem..

Hi i have a seagate ST360021 (60gig, 7200rpm) hdd and an epox 8k5a2 motherboard. I am always getting delayed write failed on my hard drive when i try to save a file or view a web page. When i try to copy my files to another hdd, it says Data error (cyclic redundancy check). Please help me as there are some important files on my hdd.

Answer:SEAGATE problem..

It could be caused by a improperly installed data cable or just a bad cable. Make sure the cable is fully seated at the drive and motherboard. If that does work try replacing the data cable. See if that resolves your CRC problems.

Ok so recently have upgraded to Windows & Ultimate on a Samsung HDD, and copied ALL necessary information that i needed to a Seagate HDD before the format. The Seagate was formatted on the XP install with NTFS, and data copied to it. Now after the install the primary(Samsung works fine), but the Seagate where all my information is does not come up in my computer. At start up, it does pick up both drives, and in Device manager it says( ST9120822AS SCSI Disk), and in Disk Manager, it does show, and is healthy and says something like backup partion/recovery partition or something to that effect, but there is no drive letter. When I right click on the drive the only thing that comes up is Help, no option to assign a drive letter. The Seagate drive capacity shows 111,9/120 Gigs, which means there is data there.

Now I did have the motherboard drivers but those didn't have anything for windows 7, as it came out later, and i did install them. I have recently downloaded the drivers and will install them when I get home. If the drivers aren't an issue what could it be?

Answer:Seagate Drive Not Available

Hello Vengeful and welcome to the Forum. You might see if this will work:Plug in the external hard drive
Open Device Manager
Expand the USB list
Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (in my case it was the one that had no description)
Right mouse click > Uninstall
Unplug external hard drive and restart computer
Plug external hard drive back in and let Windows 7 find/install the driver
See if external hard drive is recognized/works.
Another possibility:

1. Plug in the external USB hard drive
2. Right mouse click on Computer
3.Left click on Manage
4.Double click on Storage
5.Double click on Dick Management
6.Disk 0 is Hard Drive Partitions
Disk 1 will display the SIZE of the external device with no name
7. Right mouse click the BLUE BAR on Disk 1
8.Left click on Mark Partition as Active
9.Left click on Change Drive Letter and Paths
10.Right click the “Add” button - Right click OK
11. The external USB device should now have a drive letter

While participating in another thread here I ran Seagate's SeaTools for Windows disk checker and discovered, rather to my surprise, that one of my two Barracudas - my data drive, not my OS drive - failed the test. I ran CHKDSK /R and that discovered 11 faulty clusters and stated that these had been added to the bad clusters record and that no further action was necessary. I took this to mean that the system would not attempt to write to or read those clusters again. I then ran the SeaTools test again expecting the drive to pass with marked bad sectors. However it failed yet again

So now I don't know whether I can trust this drive or not. Windows says it's OK, Seagate says the opposite! Any thoughts?

Answer:Who to believe - Microsoft or Seagate?

Hey Earthling...

Have you looked over the SMART data? Knowing you I am sure you have, but I just thought I would ask. With multiple bad sectors I would expect to see some pretty raunchy SMART numbers.

More or less a noob at this, but to attempt to provide an answer to your question, I guess I would say neither are my favorite, and I'm not sure I trust either one implicitly. I used SeaTools a handfull of times, and I was sort of skeptical about the results, partly because they didn't seem to match with the SMART data as I expected they would. In this case, we're talking about well used drives with mediocre SMART data and which were then reported as passing with no bad clusters in SeaTools (opposite result of your tests). The test was fast, but I just wasn't sure how thorough. Also, I didn't care for the data presentation of the software, AND I got this nagging feeling working with the program that it was at least in part designed to sell drives. I hate that from a diagnostics program. Makes me elbow sore.

That said, I think of the MS tools sort of this way. If you are satisfied MS' solutions in your OS for defragging, scheduling, and backup, then chkdsk should I think would be good enough for you. I guess that means I would say that if it hasn't been improved post XP (the OS I use), then I would say chkdsk is not for me when it's time for a real drive test or test/repair.

I am interested that you brought this up. I made a ... Read more

Question: seagate freeagent

I have a seagate freeagent and I was trying to upload a video to youtube. It froze so I shut down the internet site. Now my freeagent will not open. My computer sees it but when I try to open it, it says that another program is using it and to close any programs down. I have tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it. I have unplugged it and plugged it back in.....still the same error. I have my whole life in pictures on the drive......I cannot loose any of them.

Any help would be appreciated

There are two kinds of storage devices: those that have already failed and those that will. Data you have only one copy of is data you intend to not keep.

Try the device on another computer. If it works there, you're saved.

If not, your next step is to determine whether it is the enclosure that has failed or the hard disk inside.

WARNING: Performing the next operation will void your warranty.

Remove the disk from the enclosure and connect it internally to a desktop computer. If it works there you have determined the enclosure failed. If not, we have further work to do.

You cannot create a dual boot where one of the OSs is on a USB drive. You need to add a second internal drive or partition the existing one.

I'm looking to buy a new 80-120 gb hard drive; a seagate, Western Digital, or Maxtor. Which brand should I buy? Have any of you guys had bad experiences with any of these brands?

Answer:seagate, WD, or Maxtor?

you should not really group the maxtor into that mix. out of those three brands or any other, i am almost positive it is the only manufacturer that makes an ATA133 drive.

something that crushes all of the other vanilla flavored ATA100 disks. its speed is unmatched except when talking about SATA. so if you want a fast IDE disk go maxtor. if you are looking for relaibility sacrificing speed from an IDE disk go seagate.

if you are looking at Serial ATA. . . . ask somebody else, i know next to nothing about them

I purchased 2 of these so-called external backup systems. Both of them continued to create mirror images until they filled up the entire drive (500 gb) and then gave an error that there was no more space on the drive. There doesn't seem to be anyway to control these drives at all. I would welcome any advice I can get. Thanks.

Has anyone heard or used one of these? This test really shows it in good performance.

Answer:Seagate Momentus XT

Friend of mine just recently put one in his Mac mini. He says' it's far better than his 5,400rpm drive he had...but nowhere near as good as the SSD that he has in his laptop. But for the price, around $100 for a 500GB...it's probably worth it.
