Microsoft Beta AntiSpyware, version 1.0.509?

Question: Microsoft Beta AntiSpyware, version 1.0.509?

I've installed and have all the latest updates to Microsoft Beta AntiSpyware version 1.0.501 but I see that there is 1.0.509 available. Is it necessary to install this version in spite of the fact that Microsoft tell that I am up to date and if so, which is the best way to do it?

Preferred Solution: Microsoft Beta AntiSpyware, version 1.0.509?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For those people that are out on the road survicing PCs, there is a new version of Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta). So you might want to get yourself the latest version. Otherwise your current version might have a bit a larger download* to do after you install it.

Excuse any ignorance in this post, it is my first attempt at any forum.

I downloade MS Antispyware (Beta) onto my PC and ran a deep scan. When I analyzed the infected files and folders I didn't notice that my P2P files were on the list for removal. This has caused my Kazaa program to completely quit working. Unlike most users, I bought Kazaa plus for 29.95 so I wouldn't have as many problems with popups, spyware, etc.. Is there any way I can restore these removed files so that I can continue to use my software without repurchasing it, and if so could you give detailed how to instructions. I'm decently educated on PC's, but details would still be very helpful.

P.S. I tried to find the original setup file downloaded for Kazaa but had no luck. Please help me to keep from paying those money pits any more than I have to.

Ok my copy of antispyware beta expired. So i redownloaded it and installed it and it all seems to work fine except for one thing. The real time protection is always in-active. I can't get it to activate and if i somehow do and go to a different part of the program it in-activates itself again. On one area it says its active but times when i was prompted with an alert before (multiple times at that) i am not now. I need this to work because as of right now im in the process of cleaning my system of spy/adware and it will just come back. Please help. Well... I didn't see anything different... So I clicked on Help -> About... It shows the OLD version... The NEW version is not displayed! Do I need to reboot the computer to see results? I have been using Ad-Aware SE anti-spyware for some time and found it to be useful; however I read somewhere that the Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta caught things that the other one does not. So I downloaded the MS version and now I use the 2 programs.

Every night MS checks my system for spyware, but in the 20+ days since I have installed it, it has found nothing--no problems whatsoever. Yet, when I use Ad-Aware it picks up many items that I have to delete.

I changed nothing from the original MS settings so I don't think this is a problem, but I am confused why one system picks up spyware and the other misses it. I always use MS first then Ad-Aware.

Answer:Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta

There is no single product that catches them all, a multi-program approach is your best bet.

I've been a user of Adaware and Spybot. Both are highly rated programs and I've had good results with both of these programs.

A friend of mine told me about Microsoft's AntiSpyware Beta today. My first though was that I didn't want to install any additional Microsoft products onto my computer, especially with all the past and ongoing security flaws with Microsoft products. However, it came highly recommended so I figured I would put it to the test.

I updated/ran Spybot - it detected and deleted a few items.
I updated/ran Ad-aware - it detected and deleted one item that Spybot missed.
I ran Microsoft AntiSpyware - it found 10 items that both Spybot and Ad-aware missed.

Have other people come to this conclusion?
Does Microsoft really have something over Spybot and Ad-aware?

Do you ever find anything with your Microsoft AntiSpyware beta? It has been 3 months since it found a tracking cookie. As a Microsoft beta tester, I will be contacting Microsoft with your answers (only answers, no user names). I know it's free, and a beta, but really!!! So many people have it, but it never finds anything. Microsoft must have done something to it.

I would love to take some facts to them, if someone will give me their thoughts on this program. Maybe we can get it to find something again?!

Answer:Is Microsoft AntiSpyware beta worth using

MS Antispyware hasn't found any spyware on my PC. As I mentioned below, the real time protection feature does tend to slow my computer down a bit. However, I like the tracks eraser feature.

Hi guys

I am curious to know anybody else came across the following issues once after MS-Antispyware beta was installed:

1. PowerDVD latest version fails to start once after it is installed in a computer already installed with MS-Antispyware beta runs.
2. Upgrading to SP2 is completely disturbed by the MS-Antispyware beta, most of the times terminating the SP2 installation once after more than 70% is completed.

fine once after the rebooting with a failed SP2 upgradation your system will warn you about a failed SP2 installation, and asks you to remove the SP2 using "Add/Remove..."
You remove SP2, you uninstall MS Antispyware beta nightmare, everything is fine back to normal. You upgrade your system to SP2, install and run PowerDVD & then install MS-Antispyware.

Microsoft Renames Beta AntiSpyware Pack "Defender" Nov. 7, 2005

New anti-spyware signatures will be delivered using Windows Update, Microsoft's one-stop update service for individuals and small businesses, and pushed to enterprises using Windows Server Update Services.
By Gregg Keizer
TechWeb News

Microsoft has renamed its still-in-beta Windows AntiSpyware as "Microsoft Defender," a company official disclosed Friday, who also said that new spyware definitions would be pushed to users via Windows Update when the product goes final.

The new name, said Jason Garms, the group program manager for Microsoft's anti-malware team, "is about what Windows will do for customers, defending them from spyware and other unwanted software." Garms announced the new brand name on the team's blog.

"We’ve always said we will provide visibility and control, as well as protection, detection and removal from other potentially unwanted software, including rootkits, keystroke loggers and more," added Garms.

New anti-spyware signatures will be delivered using Windows Update, Microsoft's one-stop update service for individuals and small businesses, and pushed toenterprises using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), he said.

Defender will be part and parcel of Windows Vista, the next operating system from the Redmond, Wash.-based developer, and offered as a free add-on to Windows XP.

I am interested in finding out how to identify the GUID for Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 in order to use the command MsiExec.exe to do a complete uninstall of all of the registry entries due to its installation.

Specifically, I found the following now out-of-date information on uninstalling Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 in order to clean out all of the registry entries, i.e. the GUID is from a previous version to the date this information was posted in the Microsoft newsgroups:

In the following example, I assume {536F7C74-844B-4683-B0C5-EA39E19A6FE3} is the now out-of-date GUID for a release prior to the July 18, 2005 release. How do you find out the current version's GUID, and verify it? Where would it be located in the registry?

Bill Sanderson 9/7/2005 6:59 PM PST

These are the notes I have. These are old enough that they don't relate to the current program version, so you should verify the GUID and to be sure that there's no change.
Unattended uninstall:

The command should be:
MsiExec.exe /X {536F7C74-844B-4683-B0C5-EA39E19A6FE3} -qn

If you want a log file ... (note: no space between the /L
and its parameters (ime))

MsiExec.exe /X {536F7C74-844B-4683-B0C5-EA39E19A6FE3} /Lime c:\temp\msas.log -qn

I was having problems updating the July issue of MSAS Beta 1, and now that the November issue is available, found that removing all of the remnants left-over by uninstalling using Add/Remove from the Control Panel turned out to be a real pain.

Ok, so I get the remnants squared away with Registrar Lite using case-sensitive scans, and install the November issue of MSAS Beta with Total Uninstall - so, when I need to uninstall, it will uninstall everything that was installed.

Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta):
Windows Defender (Beta 2) is the final name for Microsoft’s antispyware solution. Current Windows AntiSpyware (Beta 1) customers will be notified automatically to upgrade.

Windows® Defender (Beta 2)
Version: 1051 - February 13, 2005

Windows Defender (Beta 2) is a free program that helps you stay productive by protecting your computer against pop-ups, slow performance and security threats caused by spyware and other potentially unwanted software.

This release includes enhanced features that reflect ongoing input from customers, as well as Microsoft’s growing understanding of the spyware landscape.

Specific features of Windows Defender Beta 2 include:

* A redesigned and simplified user interface – Incorporating feedback from our customers, the Windows Defender UI has been redesigned to make common tasks easier to accomplish with a warning system that adapts alert levels according to the severity of a threat so that it is less intrusive overall, but still ensures the user does not miss the most urgent alerts.
* Improved detection and removal – Based on a new engine, Windows Defender is able to detect and remove more threats posed by spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Real Time Protection has also been enhanced to better monitor key points in the operating system for changes.

Another uitility for your tool kits.

Note: I haven't had a experience with the new version (Seemed to load ok on the XP .. .a little trouble on an Win2000 box)
.. but I had been loading the older version on many pc's with good "Proactive" results.

Any issues??

Weird thing. The icon in my system tray has always been orange, but now it's blue. I have the program set to run an automatic scan at night. There are two users on this computer (XP Pro), and the icon is orange for the other user. Any ideas?

Also, when I run a scan from my desktop, does it also scan the other user's files? Or does that user also have to run the scan? I've always wondered this about other antivirus and antispyware programs.

Hi there

I have Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 (Version: 1.0.501.)
It has been trouble-free up until tonight. Tried several times to get updates and I get this message (see below). I must have Internet connection as I am posting this I have made no changes that I am aware of.
The kids may have been mucking about though
I did the last scan April 30 and try to do it once per week (at least)...
Can someone please advise?
I also have other virus and spyware protection (see my signature line for details)

Thanks in advance

What version of Vista is Vista Beta RC1 a beta version of? Ultimate? This is the first beta of Vista that I have installed.

Answer:Vista beta is beta of what version?

Yes RC1 is Vista Ultimate. If you setup user accounts /w password and not automatically logging in then you see that right at the bottom of the logon screen. As well as under the system properties. Actually there quite a few places that displays it.

Have fun with it and give as much feedback to Microsoft as possible.

Recently, I have experienced some odd issues with the Real-Time protection elements of the MS Anitspyware (beta) software. Without messing wtih the features the Real-time service agents have been de-activated and I am not allowed to activate them. When attempting to activate I receive the notice "Could not start the security agents". I also noted the agent checkpoints are displayed as active and can be individually de-activated. Have you heard of any issues regarding the above?

Answer:MS Antispyware (beta) Realtime service agents

Some malware could be causing this or your installation may be corrupted.

I would uninstall it! Then reboot your PC. Then reinstall and update after the reboot. Let me know if it runs okay now.

Just wanted to drop a quick reminder that old builds of the Windows AntiSpyware beta stop working after Sunday (7/31). While most users should have received an automatic update to the current build (615) I suspect there will be some folks out there who did not have updates enabled or who have their computers off during the time set for the automatic update. If the timebomb hits the application won't work which means no scans, no auto-updates, no system protections and no icon in the systray. To get past this, just download and install the current build (615). You can find more information (with screenshots) at: Feedback can be sent to wasfeed @ Additional support can be found at

I have an HP Pavilion Laptop, Windows 7-64bit.
My WMP11 does the following:
1. It clones music titles...even in front of my eyes.
2. Music files disappear.
3. Titles are now assuming wrong names even though content remains.
4. My music files come from my Music Library. Those have not changed or cloned..

5. I deleted WMP11 and re-installed...but all the above errors returned.
6. My Library files are skewed. Music is mixed with Video and with Documents and all around. Why? I dunno.
7. My music library is around 25GB; but it changes with the losses mentioned in #2 above.
8. I tried RealPlayer but their format leaves a lot to be desired by me. Also, it keeps requiring Flashplayer and no matter how many time I download it, it asks for it again.
9. I am 80 years old, not very computer savvy and I'm blessed with Parkinsons. Music is my hobby.

Hey guys I have stuck to avg 8.5 in the past because it came with antispyware support, it seems now that avira antivir personal as of version 9 now has antispyware protection. I have read about how accurate it is compared to avg.

Currently I run Antivir 9, Adaware 8, and windows defender.

Well that is on my windows partition

Answer:Avira Antivir Personal FREE Version 9 Now Has AntiSpyware Protection!

Ad-Aware is a waste of system resources especially the free version. And Windows Defender in Windows XP is not much better although it does have some protection features. Windows Defender in Vista is a little better but still not great. However if you are not going to pay for protection, your free choices are limited.

You still need a real firewall.

I went to staples today and I was asking one of the employees there about the Windows 7 Upgrade version and he said that he tried both the upgrade version and the full version and said that the full version was faster does anyone else have reports of this? I'd like to save the $60 if possible but i'd like my computer to be as fast as it can be, even if that means spending a little extra.

EDIT: title should be Windows 7, not Microsoft 7.

Answer:Microsoft 7 upgrade version is slower than full version?

Buy the upgrade version, but do a "clean" installation. See this tutorial think someone was trying to get more money out of you.
