Order of open windows on Taskbar

Question: Order of open windows on Taskbar

As I stated in a previous post, I often work with multiple windows open in XP.On the Taskbar these are arranged left to right in the order they were opened. Does anyone know of a way to rearrange the order of these on the Taskbar.I ask because I often wish to cut and paste repeatedly between two windows and it would be very handy if I could place these next to each other on the Taskbar. As always, any advice would be greatly appreciated.Cheers,Dan.

Preferred Solution: Order of open windows on Taskbar

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Guys,

Got around to installing Windows 7 on my home desktop and laptop. Am rather impressed with everything compared to Vista (speed, etc) but have one big annoyance - the taskbar.

I have my taskbar set to traditional mode where each window gets its own taskbar item (ie if I have 4 Firefox windows open, I have 4 Firefox taskbar items show up). I also don't use the Pin functionality as I dislike it.

In <=Vista, every time a new window opened, it would open to the right of the taskbar. In 7, it likes to group applications of the same type (Firefox for example) together. Any way I can get it to revert to how <=Vista did it?

I also have the same problem with system tray icons.

Best Regards,
Craig Brass

In other verisons of windows the tiles on the taskbar would be in order from time. If i opened Google Chrome, and then Adobe, and then another Google Chrome instance it would look that way. Now however it "groups" the two Google Chrome ones near other, and the Adobe one on the left. Anyway to change that?

Answer:Change order of taskbar windows?

Right click the Taskbar, then click Properties. Then select 'Never Combine' next to 'Taskbar Buttons'.

I hope I can articulate this properly...

I just got a new Lenovo laptop from my company (Win 7 Pro 32 bit with MS Office 2010). The behaviour of the ordering of the similarly grouped items within a button is different.

For example, I always have Outlook, Windows Explorer, IE and Excel open throughout the day, and always have multiple windows of each application open as well. So I have the Taskbar Button on the Taskbar Properties set to Always Combine, Hide Labels.

So for example, I have 3 IE windows open, let's say IE1, IE2 and IE3....opened in that sequence. In my experience, (personal laptop with Win 7 Pro 64 bit and my previous work Lenovo also with Win 7 Pro 64 bit (and frankly even my old XP and Vista machines), when I hover over the button on the taskbar where the IE windows are grouped, it will always show IE1 at the bottom, then IE2 and IE3 on top---basically, first window opened is shown at the bottom.

However, in this new machine I just got, it's behaving differently. IE3 is at the bottom and IE1 is on top. This is true for also grouped Outlook items, grouped Windows Explorer items and grouped Excel items. I just checked with a co-worker and his is doing the same.

Does anybody know how to change the ordering such that the newer opened windows show on top rather than at the bottom?

I sure hope I am explaining this correctly.

Any help will be appreciated.

How do you change the order of any folder (explorer) items on the Windows 10 taskbar?

I am able to change the order of programs, but not any folders I have open. I try dragging them, but they don't move.

Thanks

Answer:How do I change the order of explorer items on the Windows 10 taskbar.

Internet Explorer browser or File Explorer file manager? I don't see individual Folders on my Taskbars, only the programs. If I have 2 or more File Explorer instances open the Folders tend to stack, one Folder icon visible and holding the mouse over it pops up a list of what I have open. Same for many other programs. The blue bar underneath the icons show what is active.

Hey Iam just wondering is there a way to change hows photo gallery opens folder, what I mean is right now when I open a pic up and hit next instead of opening the next pic to the left or right it opens the one under it.

its annoying because I want to view the pictures in the order I took them.

Answer:Windows photo Gallery open order

Hi

Not that I've ever heard of, but you CAN change the order in which your pictures show in the folder...
If you say "The Order I took them", then they should have a "Created on" date and you can sort them by that. Play with some of the "Sort by" and "Group by" settings, and/or the "Date Taken" one, or another option is to add Tags to the photos and then you can sort them as you please according to how you tag them.

Hello Everyone! Sorry. Instead of a question, I just have this solution that I want to share. I noticed nobody here asking for it. But, just in case, here it is.

QUESTION: When we open multiple Microsoft Office documents from Windows Explorer, they don't seem to open alphabetically. How do we do it?

ANSWER (Old MS Office Versions):

In your Explorer window, supposing you have five (5) files named A, B, C, D, E. The sequence goes like this:
1. Single-Click file B. This acts as the anchor point for most of the selection.
2. Shift-Click the last file. In this case, E. By this time, B to E is now selected. Only A is unselected.
3. To include A, Control-Click file A to complete the selection.
4. Press the Enter button.

ANSWER (Newer MS Office Versions; per app; Excel example):

1. Create a shortcut from the MS Excel application. Put it somewhere easily accessible such as the Desktop.
2. In Explorer, ready your files because you'll be dragging them to the MS Excel shortcut.
3. Select the files you want to open simultaneously and alphabetically. It doesn't matter how you select them.
4. This is the curious part. When you drag and drop the selected files to the MS Excel shortcut, it matters which file among the group your cursor is pointing at. That file will be the first to be opened. The rest will be opened alphabetically after the one you're pointing at.
5. Example: You have files A, B, C, D, E. We select them all and drag-drop them to the MS Excel shortcut.... Read more

Hi,

This could be a silly question, But I couldn't find a way to change the order of tabs which are grouped in Win 7. I like to have the recently opened Tab on top and the rest according to their history.

I've attached the screen to explain if my terminology is confusing. In this, you see the Outlook Emails grouped. I wish to have Outlook at the bottom and Emails on top of it, the top most will be the one opened recently. (Last in on top)

(I like other groups too have the same Eg. Chrome Tabs stacked).

I remember I had this settings before, But I miss that now.

Thanks in advance.

Hi. I have eleven open items showing on my taskbar (browser windows, files,
etc.). Is there a way to change the order that they appear on the taskbar so
that all similar items are together- all Word docs, all Excel files and so
on- without closing and reopening them in order?
Thanks.

Answer:Change the order of taskbar items...

Hi,
Change the order? No, but you can go to the taskbar properties and tell it
to 'group similar taskbar buttons'. Just right click the taskbar, choose
properties and the option is on the first tab. They won't be sequential
(side by side), they will stack.

Hey everyone,

I don?t know what happened but I can?t change the order of the pinned buttons in my taskbar.
Partially actually.
I had a preferred order (My documents/Chrome/Utorrent/iTunes) but now if I change one of the buttons they keep sticking.
The weird part is that some buttons do move, but it depends on where I leave it to drop or else they return to their original place(example: iTunes can only go left or mid left but not right or mid right) which doesn't make any sense.

I have not locked my taskbar.

What should I do to return it to the original state?

I'm going nuts trying to find a solution for this.
How can I have my taskbar buttons to open in the order they were opened and stay that way? (FYI buttons are un-grouped)

It's mainly my internet buttons/tabs at the bottom. Before W7, they opened in the order I open them. Example: the last thing I opened be it IE, explorer, or an app should be the last button next to the clock. Right now I have 4 windows open and all the buttons/tabs at the bottom say the same thing. W7 keeps arranging them then I have to look for the new order ...

I hope I have explained my situation enough ... Please help while I still have some hair not pulled out.

We recently switched from Windows 98SE to Windows XP. One of the things I don't like about the new system is the way they treat open windows. When I have multiple windows open (say, 4 Internet Explorer, the Control Panel, and a Microsoft Word document), it will shrink all of those into what appears like one window, with up and down arrow keys beside it. Can I change it into multiple, separate windows lined up on my taskbar, or is this the way it is supposed to be?

OK, I've tried to live with this issue for far too long and I just can't take it any longer.

Short version:
When i open a sub window in a program it opens up behind the taskbar which is at the top of the screen, so i can't grab the window to move it.

Long version:
In Windows XP. I've notice this on several different computers.
I have my taskbar at the top of my screen.
With some programs, when opening a new sub window (like opening an image in Photoshop and it pops up a new window of the image) it for some reason decides to be a pain in the ass and throw the window at the top of the screen, behind the taskbar. So I can't reach the top of the window to move the window, minimize, maximize, close, see the title, etc.

The only way to fix this (on a temp basis - every time it occurs) is to right click on the taskbar and uncheck "Lock the Taskbar". This bumps the top of the window down where it's accessible. I then re-check "Lock the Taskbar" because I can't stand having it not locked.

I have the taskbar set to Lock (although it does this regardless of that setting, but switching it bumps the windows down into sight), set to NOT auto-hide, keep taskbar on top of other windows (when this isn't set, the taskbar isn't visible unless I minimize everything down and the windows when maximized take up the full screen over the taskbar which is annoying as crap.

So I really can't figure this out.

Hey.
Just got Win7 a few days ago, and I've managed to root around and find solutions to most of my issues either on here or just by pressing buttons until it works, but...

There are two problems I have with the way the Taskbar works at the moment that I was hoping I could get a little help with.

Problem 1:

The new Pinned Programs function of the Taskbar is driving me up the wall.
I'm pretty sure the attached screenshot explains sufficiently well, but just in case:

In XP and Vista, when you put an icon (I call it a taskbar-icon) in place next to the Start menu button, they will be opened by pressing Win+1, Win+2 etc.

The program opens into a working window at the end of the line of taskbar-icons, and leaves the taskbar-icon in place.

Can I arrange it so that windows open in this way, rather than the current default way?

Problem 2:

Pressing Win+# twice will open two separate windows. I can do this in Win7 by pressing Shift+Win+#, but the two windows stick together so I cannot move one window to a place not adjacent to it's partner.

For example, I apparently cannot change [Firefox][Firefox][Explorer] so that the order is [Firefox][Explorer][Firefox].

Is there a way to separate windows, or ideally settings that will not stick windows together by default?

Oh, and a way to have the pinned programs take up less space, as in the bottom screenshot, would be nice.

Answer:Where windows open on taskbar.

I think the only way to get rid of that behavior is to use Always Combine, Hide Labels in the taskbar properties under taskbar buttons. You could also enable Quick Launch like in XP or Vista if you would like.

Hey guys,

I was wondering if there was a way for me to reverse the order of the menu items that pop up when you right click an icon / active program in the taskbar. The reason I ask this is because I put my taskbar at the top of the window (where everything else is, browser navigation, folder address/navigation, just makes sense to me), but when I right click on an icon, the persistent actions pop up immediately, and if I go to click on one (like "close this window") then the recent or pinned items expand after a second or so, causing me to misclick.

The right-click menu is designed perfectly for a taskbar on the bottom, but it's backwards up top. Any way to get them reversed? Not technically reversed I guess, but just get the persistent items to be at the top.

When I open multiple instances of an application, say Internet Explorer, if I hover over the button group on the taskbar, the previews of the websites appear above the taskbar in the order in which they were opened from left to right (eg. 1st website on far left, ... last website on far right). I have a user who swears that he found an option at one point to cause the websites to appear in the reverse order (eg. last one opened on far left, ... 1st one opened on far right). I have not been able to find an option to do this but the user is expecting me to resolve the issue. Does anyone know if this option exists and where to find it?

I'm sorry but I don't think this is possible. The only way to tweak the taskbar thumbnail previews are through the registry, or using a small portable program called Taskbar Thumbnail Tweaker, but what you are talking about is not an option on this program nor is it tweakable through the registry(I may be mistaken).

This question is about the taskbar (not folder view for clarification purposes). On my windows 7 the taskbar (set to combine when taskbar is full) in default lists the windows in descending order rather than ascending like XP did, which puts the most recent window at the bottom of the column instead of the top. I desperately need to change this.

The problem is that after 22 or 23 windows the column has to scroll, and the scrolling on windows 7 has become about 5 times as slow as it was on XP. I'm a power user and regularly have 50 or 60 (or more) windows opened at the same time. So now if I open a new window in foreground it will sometimes put focus back on last window opened (not sure if it's windows 7 or firefox doing this) the window will now be all the way at the bottom of the column. Combined with the extremely slow taskbar scrolling speed this is a GIANT pita. Whereas on on xp I just clicked on the icon, it's the top window listed and....bam!, less than a second and it's back in focus. Now on windows 7 I have to click on the icon and scroll all the way to the bottom of the column at a snail's pace speed to get my window back in focus. What took less than a second in xp now takes 5-10 seconds or more depending on how many windows I have opened. Ridiculous!!!
Can someone tell me how to change the default group order in the taskbar column from descending to ascending?

And is there a way to increase the column scrolling speed of windows 7?

Hi Guys Im new and have never posted here before, so please help me out.
I have my computer specs, I have windows ultimate 64-bit completely updated and Im having some trouble with pinning to the taskbar

So I can pin items fine, but I can no longer change the order of the taskbar items.
I previously had (from left to right) Chrome> WMP > Explorer > Steam (Gaming Platform)
Only those four in that order, I tried pinning something else, which didnt work, and now I have this dilemma - it changed the order of the pinned icons and now I cannot seem to change them back into the desired order. Im guessing some regedit might fix this.

Tried locking and unlocking the taskbar
also tried going to

I'm hoping that is can be accomplished via the registry or something like that. Here's the reason for my question:

I am using a laptop and it's LCD screen resolution is max 1900x1200. The icons in my Task bar are in a specific order/location. For example, on the LCD screen, I have two rows of icons and one of my most-frequently used apps is the last one on row 1.

However, when I dock my laptop, my external monitor is 2560x1600 and now I only have one row of icons. Thus, that app that was at the end of row 1 is no longer at the end and now I have to "search" for it each time because I'm accustomed to it being at the end.

So, would I be able to dynamically change the order of the icons myself via the registry or something? Basically, I'm hoping to run a script/batch file that would set the order depending on whether I'm docked or not.

Thanks!

I've been having a recurring issue with my computer since a couple of weeks ago, and since then no AVG scan or even restarting it has permanently fixed the problem.

The problem happens to be that sometimes, I'll have Google Chrome open and maybe want to open Photoshop to work on some art I'm doing, and my taskbar won't respond. At all. If I minimize, say, Skype while I'm having this issue, Skype won't open. Sometimes it's only a couple apps on my taskbar that will respond; Paint might open, but Discord won't.

Occasionally it even extends to my desktop, in which I am unable to open a program via clicking on its desktop shortcut. Right now my taskbar icons have gone so far to even vanish, leaving only extra bits (like Skype's offline icon) as proof they're even there. Restarting it fixes the problem, but only briefly.

Some notes:

-I am fairly young and mostly use this laptop (HP Pavilion) for playing games, chatting with friends, drawing, writing and blogging.
-This laptop is old enough that its warranty has expired recently. I have had it for about two years.
-I started having this problem around uninstalling the trial version of AVG PC Tune-Up, after its messages to make me buy the full version annoyed the hell out of me.
-I can't actually open my settings to check the key info of my PC right now.
-Here's a photo of what I've been going through.
So is this just a silly Windows 10 glitch, or is there a deeper-rooted problem my anti-virus is failing to uncover?

Answer:Windows 10's taskbar won't let me open things.

Answer:Windows that are open underlaps taskbar sometimes

Try something simple like auto hiding the taskbar and then undoing it.

I have a different sort of problem with grouping.

See, I'm a game modder, and this requires me to have many folders open at once. The problem is, when my computer goes to sleep and then wakes up, the order of my folders on the taskbar is changed. This bugs me to no end, and I'm wondering how I can stop this reordering from happening. Thanks!

Answer:order of my folders on the taskbar is changed after computer wakes up

That's weird. Mine don't rearrange when it resumes from sleep. Do you have some third party icon/system customizers installed or something?

Perhaps someone has heard of this or knows of some way to do it in windows. I am running dual screens. One has all of my information, chat programs, music player, etc. on it and the other is my workspace. MY problem is that there are so many items on my task bar from my second screen that i can never find what i want on my work one. I know I've seen this before, but i cant find it anywhere. I'm looking for a way to hide the task bar items of either selected open programs (preferred) or a way to hide all that are currently open or not minimized.

I just recently had a blue screen of death, kernal page dump, didn't have enough time to get the error code but never had it ever before. Had to shut down my whole computer, then when I try to load windows back up, I log in and as soon as I try to open a program from the taskbar or desktop, the blue circle waiting icon appears next to the mouse point, then it'll just hang there. Always have to shut off my PC, not even alt+ctrl+del will work. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? I'm running in safe mode at the moment and the problem doesn't exist there. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I've already tried a clean boot, and ran Malwarebytes but still nothing solved yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have one weird problem here. I've restarted my computer several times now, and no matter what, when I boot up, my desktop wallpaper is a blank gray slate, my taskbar and start menu don't show up, none of the start programs appear to run at all, but the windows explorer seems to work because an explorer window pops up as though the computer knows I can't access anything else.

Now, through this explorer window I can still access nearly everything I need from my computer. None of my programs seem to have trouble opening from the explorer or task manager. But needless to say, that's not gonna cut it. I've tried and I've tried but I cannot trick my computer into opening up the taskbar. I have managed to revert my desktop background back to normal, but upon restart it is just wiped clean again.

Here's a screenshot of just what this problem looks like.
As you can see, minimized windows are just tucked down into the corner without the taskbar. It's as though I'm running a pre-windows 95 machine, but all other windows functions seem to be working fine. What could cause this?

Answer:Windows taskbar won't open, but explorer works

Things just got more interesting. Out of desperation I tried creating and logging into a new profile on this computer. To my astonishment, the taskbar and start menu work on this new profile. It has no problems whatsoever! So whatever is causing this problem, it's exclusive to my primary profile.

Hey. Hope I can explain this correctly. I recently performed a clean installation of Windows 10. Previously when I used to open programs on my taskbar (say Firefox) the icon would stretch and the window would be open. Now when I click on the icon, the programs open but the icon stays square rather than stretch to a rectangular shape to indicate the program is open.

Can someone advise what I can do to change this? Many thanks

When I change between Virtual Desktops in Windows 10, the order of applications in the taskbar changes each time I return to a Virtual Desktop. Is there some way to retain the order?

To explain, I have a specific order of applications in my Windows taskbar - Directory Opus leftmost, then VMware Workstation (if open), MobaXterm, Outlook, etc. I don't always have the same applications open, but by arranging them in the same order it's much easier to find the right one in the taskbar without really searching.

The problem comes when I go back and forth between virtual desktops. When I return to a desktop, the application (or their icons in the taskbar) are reordered either randomly, or by some logic I haven't found yet. So I start with Directory Opus, then Outlook, then Notepad++, then Chrome - switch to virtual desktop 2, return to 1 and it's Chrome, Opus, Notepad++, Outlook. Not that big a deal with 4 icons, but when I have 10 it really slows me down.

So, I'm looking for ideally a way to lock the position of the applications in the taskbar, or failing that some other workaround.

Thanks

Hello,

This will be my fist post on this forum.

I've recently come across a weird dissatisfaction with the ordering of the items (links) found in the Desktop toolbar shown via the task bar.

Until today, the menu listed the encompassing links in a particular order, and I happened to accidentally move one folder from my desktop. Once that happened, the order changed for only that one menu item/link.

This threw me off in an OCD sense due to the fact that now there was this random folder hanging off to the bottom of the menu not being grouped with other directory links, which were all grouped together.

This then started to get me thinking if I could change how the items were grouped on the menu itself by altering any toolbar configuration, but alas, there wasn't any such option.

Instead, I decided to remove the toolbar from the taskbar and add it again to see if it did anything.

Lo and behold, it did, but now the order was out of wack again.

The folder items were grouped together as I remembered them to be in the menu, but now the other menu links (representative of the other desktop links/files/etc) were out of order.

So, my question is now: how is the toolbar ordering the desktop links/files/etc? Is this modifiable at all?

I was under the impression that it was using the date modification time to order the items on the menu, but now I'm not so sure after what I did to the folder earlier. I didn't even delete it, and simply moved it inside another folder by accident.

The Windows Photo Viewer will not display photos in the order they are sorted by Windows Explorer.
This is not referring to the slide show feature, just the forward and back arrows.
The only order pictures can be viewed is by name despite Windows Explorer being set at view by date, ascending.
I have repaired Microsoft Live Essentials, uninstalled and reinstalled but the issue remains.
This is also not an issue with photo tags or photo names.
Windows Explorer sorts as selected but click a picture in the middle to view, click the forward arrow and instead of the next date picture being viewed, the next name picture is viewed.

Answer:Windows Photo Viewer; sorting order not the same as view order

Hi!

I upgraded to Windows 10 recently as well, I have the same problem and I also have a solution. However, I do not know, if it is ideal. :-)

What is obviously missing is an entry in the registry called DropTarget. This entry tells Windows Photo Viewer to display the images in the sorting order of the folder Photo Viewer got called from.

Non-solution:
I saw that at least in my registry there is a DropTarget defined in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell\open\DropTarget. From the name of the key and from reading the docs this looks as if it would be applied to all calls to this program, but -if that actually is the case- for me this entry does not work. It has been there (at least) after my Windows 10 upgrade, also the "Clsid"="{FFE2A43C-56B9-4bf5-9A79-CC6D4285608A}" seems to be fine, but it does not do the job.

Solution:
For me, this problem was present for jpg and png files, but not for bmp, dib, gif, jfif and what else can be opened with Windows Photo Viewer. To fix this, I have added the following to the Windows Registry:

Code:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile\shell\open\DropTarget]
"Clsid"="{FFE2A43C-56B9-4bf5-9A79-CC6D4285608A}"

How do I change the way active/open taskbar icons look? I want to get rid of the blurred box around the icons and have a different effect such as a small indicator light under them to let me know they're open. Is that possible?

Answer:Change the way active/open taskbar icons look in Windows 7

I use classic theme though that sounds like a great idea... I doubt this can be done via any ico file or what have you. Would require a custom theme or third party application. I found another thread on here that asked the question. This is apparently controlled by DWM, and the closest thing you can do is a use a coloured theme and the blur will be a different shade of what ever colour you chose. The last thread was in mention of modifying the contrast here: How to change colors icons from the taskbar ?

Is there any way to keep all pinned apps. on the taskbar, to the left of all open windows (like in Windows 7 and earlier?

Answer:Pinned apps in taskbar - Keep to the left of open windows?

Hello Synomenon,

By default, any opened app or window will be to the right of all pinned apps on the taskbar unless it is a pinned app, then it will show opened wherever the pinned app is already at on the taskbar.

If you like, you are also able to drag the pinned apps in any arrangement on the taskbar though.

Hope this helps some,

This is the weirdest thing i've ever encountered in windows.

brand new computer, i installed my normal program (office 2013, vs.net 2013, sql developer 2014, stardock start 8 and some other basic stuff etc)

i have this computer and google chrome pinned to the task bar.

if i left click either of them, they take 10+ seconds to open. I can run either from a short cut on the desktop or anywhere else and they both open instantly.

i can fix this behavior by right clicking the task bar and clicking lock the task bar. now both chrome and this computer open instantly for about 1 min. eventually they both go back to 10 seconds.
i can then right click and do unlock the task bar and it fixes it for a min etc.

i think it might have something to do with office. i'm going to try to uninstall that and reinstall and see if it helps.
the little pop up messages in the upper right corner for "you have an email" are also very slow when i click on it to open the email in outlook.

i'd appreciate any ideas as i'm stumped.

Thanks!

I push my system hard, and have the hardware to handle it (for example, 24G memory.)

From time to time, I'll have an enormous amount of windows open. Right now, I have about 100 chrome windows open, with multiple tabs on each.

Once there are more windows open than Windows can display vertically on my 1050px height monitor, it shows an up arrow at the top of the list it can display, and a bottom arrow at the bottom of the list it can display.

If I hover over either of these arrows, it scrolls at about 3-4 windows per second, which can take forever to scroll to the bottom of the list (which is where the most recently opened windows appear.)

Besides learning how to close windows when I'm done with them, rather than on an every couple days basis, how can I switch more efficiently?

Sometimes ALT+TAB is a good alternative, and sometimes it isn't.

Can I decrease the delay between scroll, so the window would scroll faster? I have a 1680x1050 monitor, not a 560x1050 monitor -- can I have Windows display three columns of lists?

Answer:Speed up scrolling on Windows taskbar's open window titles

Excellent question, for which I too would love to find an answer.

Also, changing or diminishing the height or space occupied by each open window/line that is stacked on top of or out of the taskbar would be fantastic, along with changing the font perhaps.

Hi All,
Recently took the plunge and downloaded Windows 10. I'm still in the process of tweaking it to my liking and there are a few things that are driving me nuts and I don't know how (or if) I can fix them.

The main problem that is irritating me right now relates to the taskbar and pinned icons. I've pinned several commonly used icons which rest nicely, on the bottom left. However, when I click on an icon, I notice it will open up right next to the icon itself. I really dislike this, as it essentially boots all the other objects to the right of that icon to the right which makes it harder to find other objects in that taskbar list that I might want to click on to open. The problem gets worse when I click on several pinned items too.

Is there a way to force open programs to always open to the right of the last icon? It was obviously normal/possible to do this in XP/Win 7...

Any advice or assistance would be most appreciated!

Sincerely,
Mr. Gisa

I have two monitors connected to my graphics card, let us call them Lefty and Righty.
Righty is my main monitor. The BIOS messages appear there during startup, and when I start an application, it opens on Righty by default.
I put several application icons on Righty's taskbar, to open these applications with less mouse clicks: Edge, Crome, Evernote etc.

What puzzles me is how the icons on the taskbar behave when the application is already started.

What I do, what happens, and what I am confused about:

Let us assume that I opened both Edge and Chrome, and I minimized both applications.
Now I click on the taskbar icon of Edge or Chrome.
- If the application window was on Righty, before minimizing the window, the existing application with all browser tabs and the exact state (cursor, open tab, scroll position) is opened on Righty. This is no surprise to me - I expected this.

But:
- If the application window was on Lefty, before minimizing the window, clicking on the task bar icon opens a new, empty application window. (Empty in the sense that the browser state is the same as if I had told the icon: open a new instance of the browser.)

I have not found a way to re-open the already existing browser window, unless I go through the task list:
Open task list.Locate the browser's task.Left-click on the ">" sign left of the task's name. The instance (?) of the task appears below the task name.Right-click the task's instance that appeared.Choose "Switch to".

It now no longer does this but now it says at the top of the preview of the one window that does open it says " Edge and 1 more page". Wondering if anyone else has seen this and if there is aa way to recover back to previous way. Outlook does still show multiple windows open when hovering over that icon. Thanks for you help.

Hi, I've searched the forum but I can't find anything that addresses this specific issue.

For a long time I've had Windows Explorer and Firefox as the only two programmes pinned to the Taskbar. My Taskbar buttons are set to "Always combine, hide labels". When I open multiple instances of Windows Explorer, the open windows are grouped in one Taskbar button with the shortcut, as demonstrated in this screenshot with three open windows:
Firefox used to display the same behaviour, but recently, I accidentally unpinned it from the Taskbar. Now that I have re-pinned it, the open instances of Firefox (version 12.0) still group together in one Taskbar button, but no longer group with the Firefox shortcut Taskbar button, as shown:
I would like to restore the Taskbar to how it previously worked - where open Firefox windows would group with the pinned shortcut, not in a separate Taskbar button. Does anyone know how to go about this?

Thanks in advance, I hope I've supplied all the necessary details.
Kuy

Answer:Open Firefox windows no longer group with program shortcut on Taskbar

Try this after you open up Firefox the new instance of Firefox on the taskbar right-click on it and pin it to the taskbar then right click and unpin the old Firefox shortcut.

Windows 7 x64 RC1 + parts in my sig. Running two monitors at the moment - 1680x1050 + a secondary 1280x720 LCD TV.

I've been having these issues periodically - sometimes I have to do a system restore to get things working again (via safe mode) and sometimes a restart fixes it:

Occasionally when I get to the desktop, the taskbar is stuck in visible mode, despite it being set to auto-hide. And if I check the taskbar properties, the auto-hide is indeed checked. But more annoying is that if I click on the Start icon, the menu there freezes. I can't type anything into the Run widow, can't browse All Programs, can't open Control Panel, etc. In addition, clicking on the My Computer desktop shortcut opens a blank window.

Anyone have any idea what's causing these issues? I'm up to date with all patches, Virus scan doesn't show anything (using MS Security Essentials for now) and running the HD 5850 driver that's available on the ATI site. I'll be reinstalling to the RTM version of 7 in a couple weeks, so hopefully that will fix things... but it's been frustrating trying to troubleshoot things as they stand right now.

Any idea what's happening here?

I have a problem with my outlook express. Whenever I open a message, an attachment, or anything that should come up in a new window, it does not open for me, it just stays on my bottom toolbar/taskbar and the only way I can open it is by right clicking on it and maximizing. This problem has happened to me before, and the person that fixed it for me said that it was off the screen and he somehow dragged it back onto the screen. I am not sure how to do this, please give me some assistance on how i can fix this issue.
Thanks

Answer:Windows in Outlook Express do not open, the stay minimized on the bottom XP taskbar.

Re: Windows in Outlook Express do not open, the stay minimized on the bottom XP taskb

Right-click on the OE button in the Taskbar and click Move and use your keyboard arrows to get the tiny window out into the middle of your screen so you have some room to work.
Then click Size and use your keyboard arrows to get it to a usable size. Finally, use your arrow keys to stretch it to suit yourself or fill the screen.

Then, this is the important part. Make sure that no other IE windows are open, close this one last so that IE will remember this size for next time.

Had diffs yesterday with computer running at snail speed > did ad-aware/norton scans to clean up > now when I minimize any open window, the tab/s just disappear/s to the left of the lower taskbar so they can't be opened easily again. Must be an easy fix for this but after hours of research in MS Help + Google + your existing threads, haven't been able to source a solution.

It happened once before but I can't recall how I got it going properly again - that's what age does to the memory!! Now when I have a PC prob & manage to solve it, I note the solution for the future!!

Would greatly appreciate any suggestions to solve this irritating prob.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Make taskbar Explorer icon open Computer folder instead of Libraries in Windows 7

Hi, I have edited and elaborated a bit in the article.
Using the command: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} makes explorer open in Computer folder, and even subsequent folders open in the same windows.
Using %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /root,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} opens subsequent folder/s in a different window.
To make the taskbar pinned folder open to Computer folder, right click on its icon and again right click on Windows Explorer and open it Properties box. In the target box use %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
Hope it helps.

I have been using XP for many many years and I have become extremely preficient at opening my programs in a specific order and know practically by intinct where everything is.

This accelerates my development considerably as I use multiple programs and go back and forth quite often.

In XP I could do this:

| Prog1 | ie - page1 | notepad - page1 | windows explorer - folder1 | ftp prog | chrome - page 3 | firefox - page 3 | ie - page 3 | notepad - page 3 |

and this:

| Prog2 | Prog3 | windows explorer - folder 3 | Prog3 ( new development ) | ie - page 8 | windows explorer - folder 4 | notepad - notes | Prog5 | windows explorer - folder 5 | notepad - changelog | Prog3 ( I often temporarily bring up a third instance of Prog3 for testing purposes for my collegues online )

^---- I know that all looks like just a random bunch of apps mixed randomly together but I assure you that these are indeed two of my five regular pipelines I use for my workflow

This process provides optimal efficiency for me and I would reallllly love to be able to do this again using Windows 7

On a side note; how can we bring back the quick launch behavior as well ?

Answer:How do we get Win7 to open programs in a certain order like XP ?

Actually that one I found apretty sweet workaround by just adding a new toolbar of a folder of shortcuts to my taskbar; works pretty well

Does anyone know of way we can UNgroup like programs from each other so that we can open them in the order that we prefer?

Hi Guys,
we have a user who frequently opens multiple files at once,
her system is a Windows 7 Professional 64 bit PC.
when she opens these files they open in a random order when she selects the file in the taskbar.
because she has to keep switching to the next one alphabetically this makes life a little painful for her, it is not a problem with the file types as they open fine and correct in a windows XP environment, the files are all in alphabetical order in explorer,
she has selected them all one by one and opened all of them at once and by holding down the shift key (preferred method)

any ideas?

Answer:Open multiple files in alphabetical order

Hi,
It is a new feature called thumbnail preview. It cannot be sorted by alphabetical. It is in order automatically when you open the documen first or later.

EDIT:  It's all fixed nowHey everybody! I seem to be having a minor problem with my open file dialog.  When I go to open a file with programs such as Winamp and IE, the files and folders are completely out of order.  They were all in alphabetical order, but recently they seem to be in the date modified order.  On the other hand, when I browse through my files using the My Computer approach, everything is just fine.  So, I'm trying to figure out how to have the Open File dialog place my files in alphabetical order by default, since it is annoying to have to sort everytime I go into a new folder. I am using Windows XP Home Edition, I don't have any viruses, spyware or anything like that.  I've tried looking through all of the folder options I can find, but I can't find anything related to my problem.  I'm still trying to figure it out, and any suggestions/advice would be great.  Thanks!

Answer:Open File Dialog - Files not in order

Try going to the folder properties and changing what the folder is used for, maybe that'll work.

Not really a problem, just something annoying that I hope someone can help me (and any others who might want to do the same thing).

When I open up images (photos or artwork) and want to modify, crop, etc, I usually use irfanview. I have it set up as my default choice to modify images. Recently I added a program called GonVisor to read digital comics and magazines and when I right click on an image and use the OPEN WITH option, GonVisor became the top choice on the list because Windows 7 has the list in alphabetical order and Irfanview is second.

To make matters worse, I have McAfee Security for my virus protection and firewall and that was working great until recently when they updated their virus protection and there was a compatibility problem with one of the recent windows 7 updates and I got knocked offline and the router didn't "recognize" my computer on our home network so I had to uninstall the McAfee Security Program and reinstall it and that solved the internet connection problem...but now I find firefox, my default operating system, is now first on the OPEN WITH list, then GonVisor and Irfanview is third! Also there are other programs on the OPEN WITH list when I want to modify images that don't really belong there....like Opera Operating system, Windows Live movie maker.

So my question is...is there a way to either change the order of the OPEN WITH list or remove programs that I will never use to modify images without going into the re... Read more

I am always manipulation files between several folders so I have several iterations of Windows Explorer open when my computer boots up and showing the contents of the folders that I manipulate all the time. Using XP files moved or copied into another folder always appeared at the bottom of the explorer window and that was good because although they were out of alphabetical order I always knew where to find the new files in the explorer window. They would stay at the bottom until I clicked 'Refresh' or changed the focus to another folder or shut down that explorer.
Windows 7 explorer behaves differently and places new files in alphabetical order. Is there a way it can be changed so that new files show at the bottom of the explorer window?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Order of new files added to an open explorer window

Hi if you right click inside the folder and choose "sort by" then click more you can then check the box that says "date modified". At the top of the folder you can then click the date modified column and all of the files will be arranged in the order that they have been created, moved or changed

I have searched Google and Kelly and asked in 24hoursupport.helpdesk but can't find an answer. Maybe I have used the wrong terminolgy in the searches?

I am using Win XP SP2

When I open the SAVE or OPEN dialog boxes the list of folders and files appear in reverse alphabetical order.

I have tried clicking on DETAILS then on the NAME heading and it comes back to the right order but next time I open a dialog box it is back to reverse order!

I have also tried right click in the dialog box and select Arrange Icons > By Name

I have tried both the above with and without CTRL being held down

It happens in all types of programs, not just MS ones.

All suggestions thankfully received.

I love the translucent look of windows, but when I have a window in full screen mode, I want the taskbar to be solid!! this was standard in vista! A translucent taskbar and frame makes it look like the window you're using isn't full screen, and I see I get drawn to it every time! hate it (the only thing I hate so far!).

Any ideas anybody? I know I can make it solid all the time, but thats not what I want either, I just want it to turn solid when a program is in full screen.

Hi,I've an approved RMA for full refund for an X230 that I'd purchased from Depot. The restocking fee was waived as I'd ordered another X230 (better EPP deal).I shipped back the unopened X230 and Lenovo acknowledged the receipt of the laptop on Feb 5. And since then there has been no update on my refund. I was told it would take 6 business days for the refund to be posted back to my account. Now it's over 2 weeks and when I contacted post sales support - this is the reply I got from them: *************Hi,We regret to inform you that i am unable to get any information on this order, I am still working on your order. Hi,

It's been awhile since I've been on here, seeing as my computer has been running pretty nicely for a while. However, after coming home from a 2 week trip, when I turned on my computer and started to do my thing, I noticed I couldn't see any of the programs on the taskbar. When I right clicked it to enable the toolbar, there wasn't any option for me to click. Now, before I left for the trip, my computer was working fine. I have no idea how this happened, and I would very much like it fixed, since it greatly interferes with IMing =)

I'm not sure if I need to post any info, like a HijackThis! log or something, but I'll make sure to do it if it's necessary in fixing this problem.
Thanks!
