Maxtor "One Touch" 120Gb USB 2 Hard Drive

Question: Maxtor "One Touch" 120Gb USB 2 Hard Drive

I bought this a few months ago on the recommendation of someone in this forum.Despite my difficulties with the Retrospect software, it appears to work well, and quite quickly, given that my PC only has USB1.1.However, there are a couple of things that make me a little nervous. The first is that there are times when the drive is powered down and yet emits quite a loud buzzing noise (and the vibrations can be felt in both the keyboard and my desk), although most of the time it is fairly quiet. There seems to be no reason why it should suddenly become noisy when powered down - I do not recall it making this noise when it is actually backing up.Secondly, I still use floppy discs for backing up small files. I notice that, when doing so, the Maxtor powers up, even though I have not taken action to do this.Any thoughts from Maxtor owners, please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This past Friday, the 3rd December, 2004 while in the middle of a System Restore, my system was interrupted by a local power outage. Since then my Maxtor 5000/120 GB External Hard Drive has been acting oddly. I first noticed a problem when rebooting the system when a "CHKDisk" for my Maxtor Drive was scheduled, which seemed to take quite a long time during the first of 3 phases. During the first phase it simply kept listing files on the Maxtor which were "unreadable". I simply escaped from this and attempted to reboot. Each time I reboot, the "CHKDisk" begins again, even though it's easy to cancel it.

The next issue relates to "Add/Remove" Programs under the Control Panel for Windows. The Maxtor Drive prevents the "Add/Remove" Programs window from being populated.

All scans by NORTON are also prevented when it gets to scanning the Maxtor drive.

While it is usually easy to access any file in the Maxtor Drive, now it is laborious and no file opens without excessive wait times. All files appear to be there. I already reformatted the drive from Fat to NTFS at time of purchase.

Six times I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Maxtor software and disconnected the drive and reconnected it only to face the same problems I previously listed.

I contacted DELL, my cpu manufacturer but they were of little assistance...their Tech first had me go online to check for adware and spamware, then suggested I contact Maxto... Read more

Answer:Maxtor 5000/120GB External Hard Drive Presenting Problems...Can Anyone Help?

I think your hard drive got damaged because of the power outage.
If I where you, I would backup what I need from the hard drive and reformat it.
I don't think it's a problem with the software. It is more likely that it is the hard drive itself that is causing the problem, formatting the drive could solve your problems.

I purchased this drive online through ebuyer and as usual i get the rogue one in stock. After a few weeks the transfer rate went down to 1.1mbs.I emailed maxtor several times and they requested I run some diagnostics and send them the results. They are going to change the drive direct, just post and packing to pay for. Thumbs up to Maxtor, what a great service. The whole problem was resolved in 2 days and my new drive came in 5 working days. So I now recommend Maxtor to anyone

I have a Maxtor one touch ext. hard drive that I let my DVR format so I could save some movies I recorded. Now that I don't need the movies any longer, I wanted to use it for backing up computer files but the DVR format must have removed the original software that was put on it to make it function so now my computer won't recognize it as a hard drive. It tells me that the drivers are loaded but I cant access it. I have been to the Seagate sites and can only find drivers to download but I can't find copies of the setup software that originally came with it. It was given to me by a friend that also no longer has the software. Does anyone have any idea where I could find this software?

I know this is not perhaps a technical problem but I am biding for MAXTOR ONE TOUCH EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE 300GB on ebay it is approximatley 18 months old it is going at the moment for £74.00and has Firewire Connectivity. I've plugged this guy up to three different computers now, even my new one...and it doesn't show. Not in disk management, or anywhere...no signs of life.

Basically, I have to figure out any way I can get the info off of this thing, if there is a way.

Has anyone ran into the solution?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Maxtor One Touch External Hard Drive Detection

Have to start with the obvious...sorry...does it have a power on light that indicates the unit is on?

When you plug it in do you hear the "USB Tone" that indicates new hardware found?

Likewise, if you click on the "safely remove hardware" icon on the taskbar, is the device shown there?

Have you tried different USB cables?

Have you thought about exchanging it for a new one?

My brother gave me his older Maxtor Hard Drive, the One Touch but he threw tha manual away, it gave with this "base" or plastic thing that would let the maxtor stand. And I am not sure if I am suppose to attack this hard drive with the stand. I think it is inconvenient because I bring my hard drive to different places.

Here is a Maxtor One Touch, laying down:
http://www.erenumerique.fr/images/stockage/20031223/maxtor-pers.jpg

Here is a Maxtor One Touch with a base/stand and standing:
http://www.lordpercy.com/maxtoronetouch.jpg

So here are some questions:
_1) What is the propery way to use my One Touch?
__a) I must always use it standing up with a stand?
__b) I could use it standing up, or laying down, doesn't matter even if the ____Disk's are verticle or parrallel to gravity?

_2) How do I properly turn off the External Hard Drive?
__a) Safely Remove Plug and Play?
__b) Or I could just press the off button?
__c) dont do ANYTHING ur hard drive will die, just turn off computer then ____turn off the drive?

_3) How come everytime I add and remove data, copy and paste, and I wait a few seconds to make sure the drive isn't active, I can't safely remove hardware?

4) Is it better to keep the external hard drive on all day? or turn it off after each use? what happens if I keep on turning it on and off because I keep on saving backup data every 2 hours?

Thanks, for any help I can get man.

Answer:How do I use my Maxtor One Touch External Hard Drive Properly?

If you copy data data to it regularly leave it on.
If you only use it once a day, just turn it on then turn it off.

Use the "Safely Remove" hardware icon,or
if it`s got a power switch use that.

It will work vertically and horizontally.

Don`t bang it,or submerse it in boiling acid.

Install and setup; Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive, and install; Acronis True Image Home Program

NOTE: See system specs below for my current setup.

I need advice and recommendations, and any pitfalls to avoid, to ensure that I end up with a trouble-free install and operating system.

I want to install and add both of the above to my current setup, but am uncertain about the best way to go about achieving a successful result.I intend to add the HD to take some pressure off my ACER C: Drive [12GB free of 52.1GB], by moving some programs that I have on it, to the Ext HD.Once the Ext HD is installed, is it possible to just do a 'drag and drop' of programs, from the C: Drive, across to the new ?: Drive? Am I able to designate or give the new Ext HD a name? eg. H: Drive.I'm also presuming that the new Ext HD will need to be 'hardlined' and powered on, only while I want to use the programs etc on it, and when doing updates via IE7. Does that sound right?I want to install the Acronis True Image program to the Ext HD, as 'insurance' to clone the content of my Notebook, its systems, functions, settings etc. Does this seem right? Some of the programs that I intend to move to the Ext HD include these and similar others; Family Tree Maker, Photo Shop, Irfan View, Real Player, Open Office etc. Do these appear to 'qualify' for movement to the Ext HD?Are there any issues that I should be aware of, that could affect operations with the Brother MFC-465CN printer/scanner etc.... Read more

Answer:Setup Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive and Acronis True Image 11 Home.

Yes you can give the HD a new name. Vista will assign a drive letter, but you can change that later if you wish.

No, you will not be able to 'drag and drop' most installed programs to the new drive. You may have to re-install them. The registry entries will be pointing to their old location and the apps won't start.

By hardlined, I assume you mean plugged in and switched on? Yes, it needs to be 'hardlined' to access the drive.

Using Acronis is a good idea.

Another thing you may want to do before using the external drive is format it as NTFS, to avoid any installation problems if the drive is formatted in Fat32 etc.

Your printer should be fine.

For anyone who as TESTED one of these:

1) DID you get the drive to be recognized in WINDOWS XP (sp2) WITHOUT, i repeat, without INSTALING ANY drivers from Seagate / Maxtor?

2) If you Installed the Maxtor Software (not Retrospect... tsk), just the "MaxUtilities" to manage the drive, DID YOU GET a new device called "Maxtor Personal Storage Driver" (used by the SECURITY SETTINGS that these drives support, i suppose)?

3) Has ANY of you REMOVED those drivers and get the drive working fine? (Assuming you Did not entered any PASSWORD to protect the drive)

Hey Everyone,

I just got a Maxtor 120GB Hard drive, and I currently have a 30GB Maxtor in my computer at the moment. I know a lot about computers, but hard drive images are one of the few things I have little experience with.

I would like to keep my operating system, XP Home, and all of its programs, files, settings, etc all together. Basically, the currect exact state it is right now as if I'm on my 30GB. I've seen my school use images to put the same image on like 20 computers.

Trust me, I'v had to re-load program after program on my dads computer and I'm already sick of doing it, so I want to avoid that lol.

I'm pretty sure there is a way do to this, and if so, can you tell me how, or give me a link to something I can read so I can pull this off. Don't want to put a fresh install of XP and reload everything and re install programs and all that stuff.

Thanks!

I have a Maxtor One Touch 200GB external USB/Firewire drive. The drive has been working fine for months... well until now.

Windows no longer recognizes the drive under "My computer"
I have checked the device manager, it says device is working, I have checked the USB Hub controllers in device manager, "working fine".

If I press the "one touch" button, then my computer starts the Retrospect program, but that program doesn't recognize the drive is exists either.

I am using USB connection, as I don't own a FireWire cable, but if that might work, I'll go buy one. The drive is humming normal, lights on, but if I try to boot my computer with the drive on, then the computer "hangs" up, when I turn the Maxtor off, the computer continues the boot sequence.

I hope someone can help

Hey, i just bought a Maxtor 120gb Diamond +9, i 've got it on the same IDE as a 60gb IBM Deskstar. Bios just doesnt seem able to find it, i also tried powermax and fitness Disc but neither had any luck. I have the IBM set to Master (o) and at the master point on the IDE. The Maxtor i have on slave (1) and at the slave IDE.
I saw that not having SP1 can be an issue, this will proove difficult for me, is getting it likely to solve this?
I wondered if it may be a power issue, i have 300w, with a dvd rom and cd writer, platinum audigy 2, radeon 9600 and 1.4amd. Im running xp Pro.
I have a Elite Group K7S5A, which i was told had a limit of 123gb..
discovered painfully after buying a 200gb, that never worked and i never got the money back for.
Im also wondering about updating the bios, although i'd quite like to avoid it..
any help would be great..

Answer:Maxtor 120gb not detected by bios, please help!

first let me tell you that you do not need service pack 1 for winXP to use 120GB. it is only required for hard disk greater than 120GB. by the way you said "prove difficult for me" i know what you are saying, they have patches out for that.

if your BIOS cannot detect the 120GB than winods cannot either. you need to double check if you plugged in the power and data cables in the back of the 120gb. also try all of te jumper settings in the back of the 120GB. also click START button> run and type in diskmgmt.msc and hit OK. do a screenprint and paste your picture to your message. you might need to resize or crop it before you post it

Does anyone know how I can resolve the issue of not being able to see my Maxtor One Touch II external drive on my recently upgraded PC to Vista. Seem to be able to see the drive on XP Pro.

Answer:External Maxtor One Touch II drive and Vista

1) Dumb question but have you installed any drivers you may need? 2) Do other USB/Firewire devices show up if you plug them in?3) If it's plugged in via usb, try firewire, or vice versa4) go to start->run (or windows key+r) and put in compmgmt.msc then go to drive management to see if it's listed there, without a drive letter, if it is, you can right click it and assign a drive letter to it.5) None of that works, I would suggest speaking to Maxtor tech support.

i am looking at the above external and want to use it ghost my notebook.

My toshiba is pentium 4, intel pentium 4, 40 gigs, 1.9 ghz.

The hard drive is one of the new models out and is 250 gigs and has the feature Lock Drive which is supposed to be a security feature if the drive is stolen.

I use symantec's Ghost to Image my drive and I can use a bootable disk for an external usb 2.0 in the event of a crash.

What I am wondering about is if anyone knows how the "lock drive " feature works.
I have been told that if it is like an encryption feature with a password that my bootable disk for the external drive will be of no use in a crash as I won't be able to get to the point of putting in a password.

Security of my external drive is important to me due to the nature of my profession and thus I am looking for a way to Image on the external but have it secure and yet be able to get to the ghost if the system crashes.

I hope that there are members that may be familiar with this model of Maxtor and will be able to comment.

I have looked at the 160 gig Western Didital external drive and was going to use cryptainer for security and that was when I was advised that I would not be able to access my ghost image in the event of a crash and so that is why i am asking if anyone knows what "Lock Drive" is?

Thankyou

Hello

I am planning to upgrade my hard disk i can choose between a samsung 120GB
80GB maxtor SATA

I dont know if SATA does really matters for losing 40 GB

so is there a big difference between normal disks and SATA and are samsung HDs really good??

Thanks

Answer:SATA 80GB or a normal 120GB maxtor

Personally, I only buy Samsung drives if I can. But that's me.

It really depends.. does your MB support SATA? I assume that it does. The highest data transfer rate you're going to achieve with a regular IDE ATA drive is 133, whereas, SATA has transfer rates up to 150 (mbps, I believe).

So, no.. you don't have to go with SATA, but it certainly is better and will be the future of HD connections for some time. Also, you'll need SATA drives if you ever plan on going with a RAID connection.

Hey guys, I'm Junior and I'm new here.

I have a Compaq Deskpro EP running a Pentium III 450MHz processor and 320MB RAM along with Win XP Pro.

I recently ran out of hard drive space as I only had 6GB. I found and purchased a WD 120GB unit at Best Buy but I'm having trouble with installation.

I used the Data Lifeguard tools program that came with the drive to copy the boot files along with the rest of the information on the 6GB drive. When I then install the drive as a master, it won't boot; it stays stuck right after the Compaq splash screen.

I'm not sure what to do next. Is there a readily-available BIOS upgrade so the motherboard recognizes the drive and size of it? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:120GB Hard Drive, Need New BIOS

With this older system you will have to format it and install Windows on it,where you get to select "large hd support" or something like that.Your present OS does not support this HD.

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didn’t recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldn’t work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldn’t).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I haven’t given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether it’s fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I intend to use it mainly to store mp3s (right now I have around 40 gigs, but I anticipate it growing rapidly soon), and perhaps some movies too, occasionally. My question is, should I partition the drive? I've read some guides on parititioning hard drives, but since mine will be almost exclusively for mp3s and video files, most of the online guides and articles are kind of irrelevant (since they assume broader use of the drive).

A side issue -- I don't know if anyone with a WD external drive has had this issue, but when I press the power button off to shutdown the drive, the blue light around the switch blinks 10 times, then stays on. It does not turn off -- even after I close all applications. What I can do is either hold the switch down for a few seconds (which I assume is not good for the drive), or put my laptop on sleep mode, then turn the drive off (pressing the power switch once to turn it off works just fine now), and revive my laptop. Roundabout, but it works. WD's online reference section suggests I turn off all applications (tried it, didn't work), or turn off indexing on the drive (didn't find a way to do that). Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Issues with WD 120GB External USB Hard Drive

My family's PC has a relatively new WD drive and NONE of your symptom. XP powers off the PC in 10 seconds. More or less.

Indexing is a service. When turned off, it can't run. Start > Control... > Admin... > Services > Indexing... > Disable it.

Yes, Indexing option shows in the hard disk property. I wouldn't touch that.

any way to retrieve data ? if not any way to reformat?

Answer:Unrecognized 120GB hard drive unallocated

As long as the disk is still recognized by Windows, you can always try a data recovery program to scan the disk for lost content. Depending on what happened to it, you might be able to restore the partition, or restore (some of) the files.

Formatting is just a matter of going to the Disk Management module in computer management and selecting the disk there. You can create a partition and format it from there.

I have a problem running my extra WD 120JB HD as a slave. It's on the same IDE slot as my master harddrive (which is the exact same HD). Here's the problem: If I plug up the power to the slave drive, and turn on the computer, it'll turn on for maybe 3 secs then turn off. So I unplug the power from the slave drive, and it'll just turn on fine. I've set the jumpers for the slave drive to run as a slave. I don't get what's going on. I've run hard drives as slaves on my computer before and it works fine, but now its just turning off. Any help will be very appreciated. Thanks!

I've a S1900-303 and I'm thinking of upping the Hard Drive to 120gb. What problems, if any, will I encounter and can I do it froom the Toshiba boot disk or should I just install XP from a XP disk?

Answer:Satellite 1900-303: Can I upgrade the Hard Drive up to 120GB

Hi

As far as I can remember the Satellite 1900-303 was delivered with the 30GB HDD.
So in my opinion the 120GB HDD size is a little bit too big and I presume the notebook BIOS will not recognize this HDD!!!

I think you can use a 40GB, 60GB and maybe a 80GB HDD.

PS: you should search for the HDD with the enhanced IDE (ATA-5) interface!!!

Good luck and have a nice day

I'm looking for a suitable HDD replacement that will not trigger BIOS erros and will work with WINXP. I would like to upgrade to a bigger drive now.  According to the specs of this machine, it only recognizes drives with 80GB max.  I've heard folks have already used 120GB+ HDDs already but there is no mention of a manufacturer or model number. Hi all, hope you can help...

I recently bought a PC with a 120GB hard drive, and have put Windows Vista on it. Unfortunately, although the 120GB is recognised in BIOS, only 60GB of this is visible in 'My Computer' in Windows.

My PC spec is as listed on the following webpage:-

http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/850893/?int=deal-3-COMPAQ SR5027

Unfortunately, I have voided my warranty due to some upgrades I made. Any ideas as to how I might obtain full usage of my hard drive would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Tom

Answer:Solved: 120GB hard drive, but Vista only recognises 60GB

It may just not be partitioned. Right Click on Computer and select Manage. The select Disk Management and see if there's any unallocated space on the drive. If so you can create another partition or resize the existing partition.

I have a firewire/USB external hard drive (Western digital). Recently the hard drive died. I bought a new hard drive 120GB Maxtor Diamondmax plus ATA/133 HDD (Old one was 80GB) to replace. When I put it in and try to format it in Windows XP, it will only read 32GB (31.4). If I put this hard drive internally into a tower, I can get it to work only if I boot with the new hard drive boot disk first, then reboot with windows. I tried a friends external hard drive...took the drive out and put it into my external hard drive box as well as DVD burner (external) box...worked fine. Is there a special way to format a hard drive for this purpose...or will only selected hard drives work for this????

Hi guys,

I had got my friend's 120GB LaCie portable hard drive and connected a day back. It was working fine, but AVG antivirus detected 1 or more viruses and cleaned them automatically.

Now I connect the hard drive and it is not recognized at all... Seems AVG has removed some required system files. Am running Windows XP SP3.

Kindly advise me how I can make the drive work as before.
Please this is pretty urgent.
Thanks a bunch in advance.

Did you try this on another computer? It may not have hurt the drive. Could just screw up the drivers that control it.

Hi

I have searched long and hard and need help please.

I have a P4 2.8 CPU with 512 DDR400 Ram and WinXP Pro installed. My hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda 120GB (Ultra) ATA. I have replaced cable to manufacturer's spec Ultra ATA cable, black interface used for master and jumper on Cable Select. I do not use the slave on this cable. I have checked BIOS and auto detected drive again. All seems fine here.

I have tested transfer rate on this drive with HD tach and HD Tune and get around 2.8 MB/sec. I experience very slow boot up and PC in general is very slow to start and execute programs.

I have removed all spyware and other threats with no effect.

Answer:Hard Drive transfer rate very slow (Seagate Barracuda 120GB)

Make sure you have hard disk DMA enabled in BIOS and see if Windows is using it.

Hello all great website!

Compaq Presario 7000 series (model #7QSM11) using Windows ME, AMD 1332 mhz processor. My sister's computer. Hard drive was a 60GB, but it died. So I bought a new hard drive actually tried a 160GB first but thought the 137GB issue was the problem so now I am trying a 120GB western digital Caviar.

I found and successfully flashed the latest bios. (ROM date 3/28/02-786K2 Family). I checked the bios and it does see all 120GB. But when I goto partition it, I run into problems. Three methods tried: I tried to use Western Digitals included CD-ROM, even created the DOS boot floppy that they recommended on another system. Doesn't work keeps coming up with an error that something like A:\Auto???.exe not found. I checked the floppy that file is there?? Comes up whether I am booting from the floppy or from the CD-ROM.

So I tried fdisk from a Windows ME boot disk. Fdisk will only find/or report 24GB. I cleared the partition and tried using the Compaq restore disks but they came up with the same problem.
Am I right in thinking that this is a Windows ME issue?
Can you tell me how to fix this problem?

My computer is a Dell 8100, also running Windows ME but with a Intel P4, I installed a 200GB hard drive and had to flash the bios, and then I am not sure if it was Maxtor's DDO dynamic disk overlay or Intel's application accelerator, or the Flashed Bios, but Windows ME sees the whole hard drive.

I am so frustrated, I am not completely stupi... Read more

Answer:maxtor external hard drive unformatted and undesignated by drive letter

What size is the hard drive?

Do you know what motherboard you have?

STEP 1: CHECK POWER (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Verify that the drive light and the light on the AC adapter (power supply) is illuminated normally.
It is sometimes necessary to contact Technical Support for troubleshooting and/or possibly to replace the power supply if it behaves unusually.

STEP 2: CHECK CABLING (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Confirm that your USB/Firewire cable is firmly connected in a port that is on the rear of your desktop computer (if you have a desktop).
Try another USB or Firewire port.
If your drive is powered only by USB, such as the FreeAgent Go, the Maxtor OneTouch mini, and the Seagate Portable drive, then the drive's cable has two USB connectors. Try connecting both of the free USB connectors into a USB port for maximum power availability.
Avoid connecting the drive via a USB hub for now.

STEP 3: WINDOWS SERVICE PACKS

Follow these instructions to ensure that your installation of Windows XP/2000 has been updated to the latest Windows Service Pack.

Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.

The System Properties window will appear. On the General tab (which will be at the front), see the "System:" information.

For Windows 2000: Update to Service Pack 4.

For Windows XP: Update to Service Pack 2.

Allow your computer to complete the installation ... Read more

Answer:maxtor hard drive

1.This problem is typically caused by a failing cable that connects the drive to the computer. Check all the cables and be sure they are placed firmly.2.Run SFC and see if it replaces any missing OS files. To run SFC go to -Start-Run-and type sfc/scannow or from command window type the same thing.3.Uninstall and re- install the drive.

So here's the deal: I would like to put an old hard drive that was given to me into my computer. So I wanted to test it out to make sure it didn't have any viruses and to see if it had been wiped clean or not. Well I hooked it up to an old computer of mine and I checked the hard drive space and was told that it had 2 partitions of 6 Gb each. I went ahead and loaded up fdisk on Win98, deleted all partitions and set up a new primary partition with max space and active. Then I reformatted the drive and loaded up windows and was told that I only have 7.8 Gb now. Well I looked on the cover of the hard drive and noticed that there should be 13.5 Gb so I'm basically missing a lot of space. If someone could please help me recover that space it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Answer:Maxtor Hard Drive Help

Is the hard drive showing at its proper size in your BIOS?When you run FDISK did you say "Y" when it asked if you needed large disk support? If you are running windows XP you could also just trying partitioning the drive within windows (I assume this is a 2nd drive in addition to whatever drive you have windows on)To do that go to START->Control Panel->Admin Tools (may need to have it set to classic view to see admin tools)Double click "Computer management" and click on "Disk management"It will then display your hard drives installed.  NOTE:  Be sure you select the proper drive and do not delete patitions you want to keep!  Right click on the area of your maxtor that you want to use, delete that 7.8 GB partition you made and then right click it again to create a partition, then right click it again to format.

Question: Maxtor hard drive

My maxtor 200g hd is acting funny. when i open my computer to look at the contents it only lists the items on the drive through the letter "c". I ran the error check and get an error after phase 2 "windows cannot complete". The drive is NTFS and two partions E 39g and G 150g. G is the only part that is having the difficulty. E works fine. This is not my primary drive so my computer still operates. I also moved some files off of G without trouble and for some got a cyclical redundancy check error and the file would not move?
Running XP Pro.

Question: Maxtor Hard Drive

Evening all, I have just got the above hard drive from Dabs, 80 gig, 8 mb buffer, model number 6Y080P0. I installed it first as a slave drive using Maxblast3 running as a floppy and then copied my XP Pro installation over to it. It is recognised in device manager as the correct model and also in My Computer but each time I boot up I get the Found New Hardware Wizard asking if I want to install the hard drive. I have tried connecting to the net in the hope that it will find drivers and install them but no joy and anyway if it is recognised in Device Manager why does this wizard come up? Formatting it within Windows and then reinstalling XP makes no difference.Apart from that it is very noisy, certainly a lot more than the Seagate it is replacing. Anybody any experience of these drives?

Answer:Maxtor Hard Drive

Irishman Not sure of the answer to the first part of your question but regarding the noise. I have two of these drives same size as yours, they are whisper quiet. [Fluid bearings]I can literally put my ear next to the case and the only thing I hear is the soft swish of air from the exhaust fan at the rear of the PC.When the drives are being written to/read from you need to look at the drive lights flashing to be certain they are working. j.

I bought a 120 GB msata and I'm planning to clone the HD with win 8.1 to the new msata drive and use the hard disk for storage.  Can you give an outline of what I need to do?  I tried to move the win 8.1 to the new msata on another u310 (non-touch) and now I can not access the bios.  Thanks

Answer:u310 touch new 120gb msata win 8.1

Hello,

I have a U410 Touch (which is very similar to the U310, I believe), and here's what I did with mine:

Ordered factory recovery media from Lenovo.
Opened U410 to remove 1TB HDD and 24GB mSATA SSD.
Installed 120GB mSATA SSD
Powered up, entered BIOS, and changed UEFI option to Legacy/BIOS/CSM option (I forget the exact name)
Installed Windows 8 using recovery media and external USB DVD±RW disc drive
Downloaded Windows 8.1 ISO from MSDN and extracted that to a 8GB USB flash drive
Ran Setup (filename: SETUP.EXE) from USB flash drive to install Windows 8.1

At that point, I was up and running.  For some reason, the Windows 8.1 installer didn't like the Product ID Key that came with the system's Windows 8.0 installation, so I temporarily entered one of my MSDN license keys while installing it.  Afterwards, I used the Software Licensing Manager (filename: SLMGR.VBS) with the /IPK option reinsert the Lenovo product ID key.  You can look up yours up before installing Windows 8.1 with a utility like Belarc Advisor or Nirsoft Produkey.

No, I would say it's not normal. But you knew that already or you wouldn't be here. I would backup any important data and replace the drive. If it's only three months old, it should still be under warranty.

Answer:Checking out a Maxtor hard drive

Well, you do the opposite of what you did on the XP tower.

1. Secure the the HDD in the HDD bay.
2. Connect the power and IDE cables to the HDD
3. Power up your PC and check the BIOS to see if your HDD is being detected.

BUT FIRST, you might want to check the jumper setting on the Maxtor, to make it a Slave drive.

If the HDD was the only (or primary) drive in the XP tower, chances are it is configured as the Master drive, which will of course cause a conflict in your current tower.

this guide shows the jumper settings for your HDD:

Hello,

I have a Maxtor 500 gig Hard drive. I got it a while back as a gift and never had a chance to use it until I got an external case for it. However, when I first started the HDD up, my computer only registered a 150 gig hard drive. I thought that was odd, so I tried to reformat it, but I kept on getting only 150. I tried atleast 3 different external cases and they all gave me the same result.

Does anyone know how to fix this or have anything that I can try to see what's wrong with my Hard drive?

Thanks.

I am having an issue with a Maxtor Model Number 92739U6 hard drive. I have just finished formatting and installing windows xp home edition. Everything was going ok until I restarted the computer.

First right after I restarted the computer I got an error message A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+Del.

I was unsure what caused this error message so I started to research this issue on Maxtor’s website and they advised me to use fdisk /mbr to repair the error. I did that and restarted the computer.

Same Error….

The thing I can’t figure out is why I am able to boot right to windows using a boot disk.

Can anyone tell me what I should do next?

What would I have to get windows to load without a boot disk?

I beleive I may have a bad hard drive but thought I would try everything before coming to that conclusion. It is a 45gig hard drive. It started when I was unable to delete files, I would delete them and then after restarting the drive, they would show up again. I tried to reformat under two operating systems. I need FAT32 so on the XP OS I used CompuApps Swissknife to attempt to format. It showed that the format was successful after completion however none of the files were gone. Next, I took it into a Windows 98 and tried FDisk. Fdisk couldn't get past "checking drive's integrity" It would stay at 0% forever. I wasn't even able to get a letter assignment for the drive on 98. Trying Swissknife on 98, accomplished the same thing on XP. Said it was completed but never got assigned letter and when drive was restarted the volume it said it had created was gone. I can only imagine the drive is done for. Any Ideas?

All bios's on both OS recognized the drive properly.

Thanks

Have Windows XP with everything updated, all service packs in place, driver updated.

While my computer will recognize the Maxtor 3200 USB external hard drive and I can even populate/format it, I can't transfer any files to it and it doesn't show up on my Windows Explorer function.

I have done a search on this problem with no successful tips as of yet.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this to work?

Thanks

Answer:Help with Maxtor external hard drive

In my computer right click the usb external device
choose properties
choose autoplay tab
select open folders to view files using windows explorer.

You may also check on the other settings tabs.

If this does not work or the USB device is not listed in my computer
take it back to the shop and get them to demonstrate, on another pc that it is working.

Answer:Maxtor 6 external Hard Drive

First, try it on another computer. If it works there or not will tell you whether you have a computer problem or a drive problem. You need to know that before you know which direction your further diagnostics should take.

Answer:Eulogy to a Maxtor Hard Drive

Losing that hard drive must have been tough, I suppose it's possible to get attached to a hard drive. Mine stopped working a few weeks back and now I feel bad, because I just trashed it and bought another one. No fine ceremony or anything. Anyway, you have my sympathy and I hope you get over it, I guess no other hard drive will ever fill the boots of that old drive. Just kidding, nice little movie ( a bit slow on my dial-up though).

A couple of months ago I bought a new computer, which has a Maxtor 120gb Serial Boot Drive and 2 x Maxtor 250gb IDE Drives (Raid 1) for Video and Photos Files - Windows XP and all software is installed on the boot drive. However, over the last month, I have noticed the increase noise from my Raid Drives, especially when working with larger files. Is it true from what colleagues have told me that Maxtor is not known for producing quiet drives. Also, the company who built my computer, did recommend Western Digital, but I asked for the Maxtor as they were ATA133 drives and not ATA100 (Western Digital).Do I just have to put with the noise (although not competing with a noisy washing machine, it does get annoying when you are trying to concentrate / work with large phone and video files?

Answer:maxtor external hard drive

If not powering up then first check fuse in plug to drives power supply.
If power supply Ok try in another machine.
Drive can be removed from case and connected into another case or direct to a spare sata point in your PC (Not Laptop)

I have Win XP, and I now have a new Maxtor 500 gb external hard drive. I didn't care for the automated back up software included thereon, so I have just been using it to backup. It has files and folders included with my files that I was wondering if ok to delete, or at least backup to a data cd and remove from the drive. They are:

Folders:
MacOneTouch.app
Bin
drivers
EULA (contains .rtf files)
guides

Files:
autorun.inf
launch.ini
launch.exe
mxoicon6.ico
onetouch4.dmg

I recently oredered a Plumax 2.0 USB external hard drive to help my dad back up his laptop. However I'm unsure exatly how to format the dirve or get it working. Being USB i tried just plugging it into the computer, and was were notified of it running at a reduced speed due to USB 1.0 on our computers. It aslo detected and installed new USB Mass storage device hardware. However it does not show up under My computer as a drive. Under device manager the maxtor HD shows up and says it is working properly, and also it shows up in the USB as mass storage device. I run Win XP and was wondering if i need to format this thing or if its broken? Thanks a bunch

Answer:Plumax/Maxtor 2.0 USB hard drive

The drive is working fine. The reduced speed message is normal when you plug a USB 2.0 device into a USB 1.1 port.

As far as the drive not appearing, it's not formatted! Right click on My Computer, select Manage. Select Disk Manager, and find the USB drive in the drive list. Right click on the drive and select Format. When you get done, it'll show up in My Computer.

Hey guys

I have a Maxtor Hard Drive hooked up to my Mac Book Pro and the other day (midway through using it!) it lost power supply, By this I mean the disk has ceased to spin and the light on the hard drive has gone out. I think it is a fault with the power input and I need a second opinion. It is not a fuse in plug as I have changed power leads but there is a power inverter before the power lead gets to the hard drive - what is the chances its a fault with this - there is a light on the power pack but it flickers when I plug it into the drive yet the hd doesn't move, light up or even fart!

Help!

Thanks Tom

Answer:Maxtor Hard Drive - no power!

What Model Maxtor External is this? I had a Maxtor PS3000 die on me, it turned out to the electronics in the enclosure died but the drive itself was fine. Ended up installing it interrnal in one of my systems.

I have a maxtor hard drive from 1997---Model number 87000D8I am interested in using a hard drive enclosure but I do not know the "type" of hard drive this is (ATA, SATA, IDE, etc). The hard drive is from a very old desktop computer, has a 41 pin connecter. When I search using google and maxtor (which links me to seagate), that model is listed as having 4 Gigabytes!!!  Perhaps it is correct. Here is what is printed on the hard drivemodel: 87000D8HDA/Uplevel: 01APCBA/Uplevel: 19AUnique/Uplevel: 1AACylinders: 14475Heads: 15Sectors: 63Jumper : J50Master/Single: OnSlave: OffS/N F806RBLAC,Z,DA6812V5VMade in Singapore()P/N 300800Manufacture Date 09-06-1997So My question is: Can I put this thing in an external enclosure, and if so, Which one should I get? Thanks.[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]

It seems I'm not 100% out of the woods just yet. I had a plethora of issues earlier that led to me having to do a recovery/windows reinstall on my computer recently. You can read all about that at this thread: http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?p=336176#post336176.

I am now having a strange issue since recovering the computer where it seems that everytime I try to open my G drive, the 160 GB Maxtor hard drive, it freezes up on me. In total I have 4 hard drives on this machine. 2 40 GB drives, 1 160 GB drive and 1 200 GB drive. They are set with a Promise/Raid configuration as per my motherboard...an Asus P4C 800 Deluxe.

The window that would be showing the contents of the drive will freeze up when I try to explore the contents of the drive through "my computer" and my mouse pointer will intermittetly freeze on the screen several times. I have to try using ctrl+alt+delete to shut it down but most of the time have to hit the reset button on the computer. I sure hope this 160 GB drive isn't trying to fail on me. I've also noticed that when I double click on shortcuts on my desktop that point to programs on that drive also cause this weird freezing issue. This all seemed to start after me recovering the system. The only 2 things I did differently when recovering than what I normally do is that I installed the Promise/Raid configuration AFTER recovery and I changed the defualt file system on the 40 GB drive that is home to windows and n... Answer:Problems with 160 GB Maxtor Hard drive

Your systems power supply is probably working beyond it's max output, and is dieing. The 160GB + hard drives get very hot. Heat = lots of current draw. I aso have 4 hard drives, a CD/DVD burner and a DVD ROM. I have a 80GB, 60GB and 2 40GB drives in a Antec server case full tower, with an Antec 350 Watt power supply... The system is over 1 year old

About a month ago I purchased a Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 Hard drive. Once I got the hard drive I realized that it was not compatible with my computer. I emailed the company I bought the drive from and they told me to buy Serial ATA Adapter. After installing the drive and adapter and from what I understand as all the software, the Hard drive is recognized as as being connected, but is not showing up under my computer or anywhere where the drive can be used.

I am just wondering if there is something here that I am missing or have overlooked. any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Clint

I have a computer with a 1.99GB hard drive, which is not big enough for my family. I have a Maxtor 2GB one that I would like to put in as a slave. On the Maxtor it reads

Master/Single On
Slave Off
Jumper J20

where do I put the jumpers to make the Maxtor the slave drive? And do I have to put jumpers on the one that is in the computer already to make it the Master? Thanks.

Answer:Jumpers on Maxtor Hard Drive

Leave the jumper off totally. Depending on the first one, what brand it is, you may have to change that jumper. It should already be jumpered as master. Hook this one up, pop into the bios setup and see if it appears.

I hope that someone can help with this... please!
I have a maxtor 80gb portable hard drive and when i try to access my files by clicking on the drive in windows explorer i get the following message -
"You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?"
I have a lot of data stored on this drive and i don't know why it suddenly appears empty. I don't want to lose all of the data already saved on this disk. What should i do?

Answer:Fault with Maxtor Hard Drive

It sounds like the disk lost the information on it, or it got corrupted. Did you ever unplug the disk without clicking the icon at the bottom right to "Safely Remove Hardware"?
