Preferred Solution: C Hard drive showing high usage.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The last couple of days my pc's hard drive has been turning/running without any stop as long as the machine is on. I have not insatlled any new software or hardware in a long time.

I've run the following scans:
1) TrendMicro's HouseCall (online) which didn't come up with anything.
2) SpyBot: nothing
3) Ewido anti-malware: nothing
4) Microsoft's malware program: nothing
5) Microsoft's virus scan (using OneCare Live Beta)
6) Ad-Aware: found 1 Tracking cookie (a data miner, IECache Entry)
7) Windows Defender is running all the time
8) I've deleted all cookies, emptied temp files and IE temp files
9) I've performed disk clean-up using Windows disk clean
10) Did disk defrag last Wednesday
11) Performed Norton on-line virus scan: nothing
12) Performed Norton on-line security scan: nothing

Any idea what else I can try?

I have Windows Desktop Search installed, but even when I stop it from running, my hard disk continues to run so I don't think this is the issue.

I have recently purchased and installed a new hard drive. It is a WD Caviar 16MB cache SATA 2 7200rmp 250 GB. (running as SATA 1 because mother board only supports SATA 1). I have noticed that it is horribly slow when the drive is being written to, also the processor usage spikes to 80-100% during the writing. I have concluded it's just during the writing because the computer boots fast and seems just fine when reading from the drive.

I have Windows XP installed, and running the latest updates. The driver for the the HD is a Windows SCSI driver. I have looked on the WD website for their driver, but have not had any success finding it. The only software that came in the retail box is the WD Data Lifeguard application, but it doesn't have an option for installing drivers.

I've read some posts about DMA and PIO settings, but I'm not sure if that only applies to IDE drives.

Thank you in advance for the help.

Hey guys, I am running Vista on an AMD Phenom X4 9150e with 4gb ram. My hard drive is constantly running and chugging away pretty good too, reading rather than writing i believe. My cpu and memory usage are quite high and my system is running relatively slow for doing simple things like opening a browser. I have attached a screenshot of the system resource monitor with basically nothing running but hijack this and a browser. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have run scans with malware bytes and adaware, as well as AVG which all come up clean.

I am running XP on old Dell PC with Pentium 4 3.00GHz CPU. My task manager often shows 100% CPU usage and my screen freezes a lot. Almost always my McAfee Antivirus (BT Net Protect Plus) is responsible for showing at least 50% up to 80% of total CPU capacity.
I regularly run Winaso Reg Cleaner, Malwarebytes, CCleaner etc to try to keep my computer clutter and bug free.
Is McAfee typically a high CPU usage user, and would anyone recommend using an alternative Antivirus.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi I'm using a windows 7 x64 home edition on an hp desktop. 3 gb ram 584 gb memory. Lately my physical memory has been running unusually high at 44 - 45% with nothing up or just with chrome and can get up into 60 - 75% when I'm actually browsing on chrome. here are a couple screens of my physical memory. I only have one account on this computer and just let me know if you need to see process for all user.

I am using Windows 7, with 4GB ram. My physical memory usage goes high upto 3.5Gig even when i use very less applications.

I have monitored using both Performance Monitor (Perfmon.exe) and Process Explorer.
All applications shows the same including my Task Manager/Wdws Gadgets.

My system is normal, but curious to know the reason.

Attached is for reference

Thanks in advance

Answer:Physical Memory/CPU Usage showing high

You are doing anything but running less applications. I can see a dozen different applications that can the cause or contributing factor. Java for instance, does it need to be running? All that stuff under "Toaster.exe" do they need to be running?

Hi,
I have a situation where my network usage has tripled over the past two months.
Using Resource Monitor, I have isolated two tasks that appear to be taking up a large portion of the bandwidth - wmplayer.exe and wmpnetwk.exe. It is my understanding that they are associated with Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center respectively.
So far, the only action I have taken was to remove all libraries from Windows Media Player, which I did based on a hit on the problem which I found online.
But this has had no real effect and I would appreciate any help in this matter.
I am running Windows 7 SP 1.
Thanks,
s660117

Answer:wmplayer.exe and wmpnetwk.exe showing high network usage

I never used the Windows Media Center. But I did notice that on Vista and later if I allowed WMP to share media files on the Lan it would constantly scan my HD looking for media files to add.

I always disable sharing of media files when configuring my network. It tends to cut out the churning.

Hope this is the right place to ask about this. I have XP, and use IE7, and have DSL, and basically don't have many problems with browsing the internet and whatnot, but I noticed when I went to Blockbuster.com the other day that after the page had loaded, I still couldn't grab the scrolling bar on the side of the window. It took what I thought was a long time, especially since the page had loaded. Anyway, for the heck of it, I opened task manager and saw the iexplore.exe was at 100%, and then would go to 0, then maybe 30%, back to 0, and maybe back to 95-100%.......you get the idea. What I thought was odd was that it seemed to frequently go to 100% or darn near when I'm not doing anything except sitting there looking at the task manager. I've noticed this same type of "not being able to navigate" for a minute or so at Amazon and Ebay also. My thinking is that they are just incredibly busy sites, but I still don't get the cpu usage jumping around like that well after the page is loaded, but then, I'm not a computer whiz, hence the question.I also went to the Computer Haven forum before this, and when I was trying to edit a message I had posted there, the cpu usage was so high, I was waiting for my backspace key to work to fix a typo!!! That seemed really ridiculous! I had task manager open while typing and was watching the iexplore.exe stay at 100% or darn near the entire time......really weird. Anyway, I've posted my HijackThis log just to see if any... Read more

I had 2gb of ram and upgraded to 8gb recently. I really saw the performance at first but then it dropped off to where it was before pretty quickly. Right now my task manager performance tab shows 5.7 GB of ram being used, while adding up everything manually in the "processes" tab (and rounding up) shows 1.29 GB being used. I downloaded and ran a hidden process revealer (Process Revealer Free Edition 1.0 - Free hidden malware detector) which showed 0 hidden processes. This is also without any antivirus software running, as I know that can suck up RAM (although I just ran the windows antivirus scan with no results, and I'm running spybot S&D now). I'll deactivate all startup programs and reboot after the antivirus scan to see if that helps, but what could be causing this? I can't think of anything aside from a rootkit - definitely not good news.

Answer:Ram Usage way too high, not showing up properly in task manager

1. Did you click "Show processes from all users"
2. Did you account for the workspaces of those processes
3. Look into Resource Monitor > Memory tab. That will give you a better picture.

Good day all,
My task manager is showing an unusually high CPU usage by the system, anywhere between 20-30% when the computer is idling. I've run the sfc /scannow utility and it found some corruptions, which were then fixed by the DISM utility. However the task manager is still showing that super high CPU usage and no amount of restarts is changing anything. Any ideas? I've attached an image of my task manager.

Windows Management Instrumentation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia discusses WMI running scripts. My WMI Provider Host is at 0%. The CPU is around 7%. Perhaps something on your PC is taking over one of the cores, and this accounts for 25%.

Have you tried closing applications such as google to see if the idling issue goes away?

It started off fine, but once I started downloading and installing necessary windows update files, I noticed once again the sluggishness I felt before, except this time my System Disk which is also my SSD drive, was being used up to 100% while my CPU was completely fine

Can someone please help me out in this scenario.

Whether I boot Windows 7 normally, in diagnosics mode, or in safe mode, a minute or so after startup Task Manager/Performance reports one core working at 100% and another is nearly as high. CPU usuage runs about 25 - 35% with no programs open.

At the same time, Windows Task Manager/Processes reports 90% of time the processor is idle. 10% is the NT Kernel & System. Everything else is 00. "Show processes for all users" is checked.

Don't these two reports seem to be contadictory?

I've tried disabling Avast. No joy.

I've run Malwarebytes and BitDefender. No problems.

What else should I try?

Hello everyone, I've been having a very weird problem recently, in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage. Sometimes I will be doing things such as playing a game, or watching a stream, and my computer will run fine for a little while. But at random times, my computer will majorly slow down and sometimes even crash. If it doesn't crash, sometimes it will get so slow to the point where I have to hold down the power button and manually shut it down. Every time my computer slows down I notice it is using a TON of physical memory. It's actually happening right now. My computer is going very slow and it's using 6.22 GB memory out of 8. There are no big programs running right now, so I don't understand why it's being slow. I hope someone is able to help. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Update: I just tried to open chrome, and the computer froze completely. It would not unfreeze. After leaving it frozen for a minute or two, the screen went black. This is becoming very frustrating.

Answer:Hard Drive Showing Error And Not Showing Up In Explorer

Hi. For starters, that first partition (D) shouldn't have a letter at all. It's a system, boot partition and with a letter to it some programs or even you can mistakenly use it.
Disk 1 does have a problem but drivers are installed to C: partition and nowhere else (part of the system) so it's not probable that driver is the cause of it obliviously failing. If you know it's make and model you could download and use a program for it's manufacturer to check it: One from here: Download Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Tools Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks or from it's manufacturer's site. Until you know it's real physical shape you will not be able to troubleshoot it properly.

I have a fairly old PC that has given good service, was originally Vista OS but now runs Win 7. I Haven't had any real problems until two days ago when the HDD busy light is on constantly. When it comes to loading up games or anything that takes a bit more CPU usage it starts to hand. I have checked task manger, an there are no real processes running there, it some times goes up to 4% and the drops. I have rebooted, run updates and cleared temp internet files and cookies.
Can anybody give any diagnostics or suggestions I can use please!

I'm running Win XP, and I was downloading some software over the last few days for popup blockers, and I downloaded Yahoo Blocker, Google Blocker, and then ran AdAware 6 [which I've since removed to get Ad Aware SE].

Anyway, I'm having very high CPU usage, and High Memory Usage in the Windows Task Manager. I keep closing dostask.exe because it keeps using nearly 90-100% of the CPU, and it keeps maxing out my memory which is 1/2 Gig.

When I start the machine, the system runs fine, but then it begins to climb. I close it, and it climbs again, and then repeat.

I also did a search for dostask.exe and found this file: DOSTASK.EXE-25D34F68.pf located in the F:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Any help is appreciated.

Important Note: F:\ is my main drive.

Can anyone tell me what I should do?

Answer:High CPU Usage & High Memory Usage From dostask.exe

You need to find out what is starting that dostask.exe and either remove it (if it's not something you use) or change the settings (if it's something you use). Read the stickied thread for more info.

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

I got this machine to look at as it had unusually high CPU usage and the CPU fan tends to stay on high speed though the machine isn't running any applications or visible tasks- just idling. I note that it has Norton Internet Security on it with a full year subscription though I'm not a big fan of Norton or McAfee. I had some program called Internet Security 2009 in the language of German on it but used Add/Remove Programs to get rid of it- likely malware or rogue AV. I also see a CA eTrust Internet Security Suite installed in the systray though upon opening it says nothing is installed- this being after I click OK to a popup message "eTrust Security Center: calSS.exe - Unable to Locate Component - This application has failed to start because ISafeIf.dll was not found reinstalling the application may fix this problem". I don't have a copy of the application and AppRemover was unable to find it in its scan so I could remove it. Any suggestions on that one?

I have gone thru the registry and removed quite a lot of items that load at startup so the systray is pretty light now and some things have improved. I removed all of the Java and will put updated versions on after you give the "all clear". I just wanted to have some eyes on the logs to see if anything else needs to go and if someone has a suggestion of how to get this CA Security Suite off of here as I know too many of these programs is more harmful than good. As I said it's not my... Read more

You can allow RogueKiller to fix the items it found, but I am not finding any malware in your logs. I suggest you post in the software forum for further assistance.

Since you are not having any malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

PLEASE HELP I DONT WANT TO LOSE ALL MY FILES

Answer:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

About a year ago, I noticed that my computer was running slow (both online and off) and that the explorer.exe process listed in the Windows Task Manager was usually running very high. Windows Explorer seemed to crash a lot as well. A few months ago, I attempted to install Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 on my computer and before the install completed a warning window popped up saying something like 'there is already another instance of Kaspersky running' (which was not the case since this was the first time I had ever attempted to install Kaspersky software) and the install failed. When I rebooted my computer, I got the blue screen of death for a few seconds and then Windows booted with a message saying that Windows had recovered from a serious problem. Since recovering from whatever happened after the failed Kaspersky install, my computer is slower than ever and the Task Manager still shows a high CPU usage even though the System Idle Process is high and there isn't any processes listed that are using much CPU time at all.

I just scanned my system with the latest updated versions of AdAware, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and Avira AntiVir. All of them found nothing. I then cleaned my computer with CCleaner and ran HijackThis.

I have installed latest version of BIOS and all other drivers and installed new window 7.. Plzz help me

Answer:Satellite C660 - Constant high speed CPU fan and high usage of CPU

Hi

I think some kind of background processes stress the CPU.
You could check this in task manager-> processes tab
Click on CPU column to get the processes ordered and to show all the processes which stress the CPU.

Closing or disabling such processes can help to reduce the CPU performance.

This problem began yesterday. I noticed my CPU was at 90C constantly with very high CPU usage (>50%). I had no major programs running. I rebooted several times and the program persisted.

1. I went into safe mode and everything was normal. So this rules out hardware issues.
2. I reformatted and everything was normal..but then after installing these few programs, the problem began again.

Hello. First off, having utorrent effectively craps you out on this forum since it has a bad rep. Suggest you remove it and come back, start a new thread. That said, if you're familiar with Task Manager, check the CPU percentage on the processes tab (click CPU column to sort). This may help pinpoint which app(s) are whack.

There is a serious issue with svchost.exe on my windows 7 computer. My HP Touchsmart 300-1025 has windows 7 64bit installed and svchost is slowing down the computer and using very high cpu and memory usage. It is not a virus or malware. I know the computer is not infected because one the computer has webroot and two if it was a virus or malware I would not be able to use the computer at all. So it has to be an issue with windows 7 64bit itself. Here is a screenshot of what I'm talking about and proof.

Hijack log below

Two weeks ago my Quark 7 stopped working - it will start and come up with the splash screen, but then will not go any further - a list of processes shows it's running at 50 cpu usage and 78944 memory usage. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling and have ran Norton's Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner to no avail. I have attached my HiJack log below.

The main programs that I use daily (and yes Quark is one of them) are the following

Adobe Photoshop CS3, ACDSee 9, Outlook express, Quark 7.0, Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver 8

Thank you for taking the time - I'm pretty frustrated!

Hi all, I purchased a external drive to back up files on our desktop and laptops. I am looking for easy way to do this, do I do all files or do I have to go into all of them one at a time. I say this because one laptop is my daughters, can I just send all her pic and music files all at once. Our main computer(desktop)is windows vista, everyday it's getting louder and louder and each morning its shows a message says configuring and it's like counting down. This takes long time. I looked at the space left. It shows space available on (c) and on d it's full which is recovery so I don't have a clue how files got on there. My hubby doesn't know much about even getting on computer, but when he does it seems something goes wrong. I want to clean up and get rid of files so my son who's 11 can use it for games. It's so slow and I don't want to delete wrong things.  From reading here and just knowing not to delete recovery. How do I clear out space on D...I tried opening some files on it but they all seem to do with the windows system. What can I do with my desktop ?And is it possible to clear out all files from laptop...it is about 5 yrs old...and she has alot of music and pics on there..just wondering if it's worth time to clean out the files. It takes forever to get online and when we do its so slow. Hope I'm not sounding to confusing.any suggestionstygreat site so far

Welcome!Computer Hope is the number one location for free computer help. The forum will help everyone with all computer questions. You have presented more that one issue. The forum will help you, but some detail is needed. What OS are you using?  What make and model of eternal drive do you use?The proper way to remove programs is in the con control  panel. But Music and pictures files can be copied to a CD-R or DVD-R and removed from the computer. The external drive can also be used to transport files from on PC to another. But using DVD-R or CD-R is preferable. The best use of an external drive is to make a backup of the operating system and programs.Avoid putting files on the recovery partition.

i'm using windows 7, my external hard drive shows up in my devices and printers section but it won't show up as a drive, so i can't view any files in that external hard drive. if i put a memory card in, it shows up as a drive and a flag shows up for when i want to unplug that drive and it asks if i want to remove my external hard drive too.

normally when i turn on the external hard drive it autoplays but it doesn't do that anymore.

i don't understand why it shows up in my devices and printers but not as a drive when i open windows explorer.

i've looked into the external hard drives properties and it all says that the device is working properly.

Answer:problem with external hard drive not showing as a drive in windows 7

Go into Control Panel (classic view) ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management ---> Disk Management.

In bottom-right pane, if you see a horizontal band representing a drive with no drive-letter assigned to it, that's the cause of your problem. You need to give it a drive-letter:

Right-click that horizontal band and choose "Change drive letter and paths".

I am constantly downloading things 24/7 I reboot the computer every day but then immeditly begin downloading again. I have a generic hard drive that came with my computer. My question is, does this usage of my hard drive break it down?I realize that a hard drive will break down over time anyways but am I significally breaking it faster or are hard drives designed to withstand that load?

Answer:Does 24/7 hard drive usage break down hard drive

well you would figure...since it is mechanical...it has moving parts...and like any other thing with moving parts the more it's used the faster it will go out....but thats just my theory

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.
Basically, in some games i get high cpu usage and at the same time low gpu usage.
My system is i7 3770k, gtx1070, 16 gb ddr3 ram, corsair hx850i psu.
In witcher 3 novigrad, which is cpu heavy, i sometimes get gpu usage at like 70% which causes stutter, at the same time cpu usage is around 85%.
When i leave town i get 95-99% gpu usage again and my cpu usage drops.
Dying light same, if cpu usage is high my gpu usage drops.
Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.
nvcp is set to prefer maximum performance and i'm playing at 1440p 144hz.
Any help would be appreciated.

Recently my computer has been plagued by High CPU and general malware. I believe i've removed most of the malware. But I can't seem to fix the issue with the dllhost.exe and multiple explorer.exe running.

First i ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Found lots of issues. all resolved. Ran them recently again and no malware was found. Still have the explorer.exe issue though.

Then I used combofix, but it changed nothing.

In the meanwhile i've just been ending the explorer.exe processes that take high CPU. This allows me to temporarily use my computer before they start popping up again.

Hi,

Just yesterday I realized that my computer was acting super slowly and I even received a blue screen of death out of nowhere. Upon checking my processes list,I found many suspicious processes that continued to multiply when I tried to end them. These included: PresentationHost.exe, msdtc.exe, dllhost.exe, prevhost.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe, conhost.exe, and even a notepad.exe that seems to be invisible. A malware is most likely behind this, and is causing my computer to perform very slowly and be almost unusable, I have managed to run FRST, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not even opening for me. In addition, this multiplying issue seems to only occur when I am connected to the internet. I would highly appreciate some help!

Hi,

I just bought my brand new laptop and have loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit onto it for about 5 days. I noticed something unusual about Vista's CPU usage while idle in the task manager as well as the Resource monitor.

I have attached two pictures to show my problem. Notice that my CPU usage is always at about 40-60% on both of my cores. However, the average CPU usage per process shows that it should actually occupy about 15% to at most 20% (by adding up all the highest average CPU for processes in the first picture). The second picture I attached shows the current CPU usage sorted by max usage, and again it does not add up to 41%!

Although at 40-60% usage, I do not notice any major performance impacts, as both cores are not loaded to the max. However, I do notice Vista chewing up more battery than needed when I have my laptop running off batteries. Because the max frequency for the processor would always need to be raised to around 60% even when idle (instead of say... 10-20%).

I have searched online for various problems relating to high CPU usage, and most of the responses are about tracing down which process is the culprit. Well, this is where I'm stumped because it all does not add up! According to the process view, everything is normal but my system resources are still get constantly chewed up by something invisible it seems.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point!

Answer:Vista Ultimate 32: high CPU usage does not correspond with process usage

Posting two more image to show this problem from the task manager...

Notice that the system idle process is 84, and yet CPU usage is 42? I always thought that:
CPU usage + idle process = 100?

Perhaps things are done differently with dual core processors? This is my first dual core so I'm not sure. The second image shows how both my cores are being used roughly equally, at around 50%.

My friend, who has a very low income was given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Can anyonre help???

I receive the same alert from AVG whether I am using IExplorer, Firefox or Chrome. Also, in the task manager the CPU usage is sometimes almost 50% and it's always the internet browser I have open. Computer seems a bit sluggish. I have also been having trouble viewing videos on surfline.com (but not anywhere else). I am more than happy to delete any programs you think would be adding to the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I've been having this problem now for an year or so now. It started when I upgraded my connection from 8/1 ADSL to 100/10 cable (so the problem wasn't noticeable even if it was there before) and when I download at high speeds (in steam, for example) my CPU usage jumps to 80% and higher, and my pc starts to stutter (mouse, audio, everything).

What makes it harder for me to track down, is that it does not happen right after I start my PC. For a good 1 to 3 hours after starting my PC I can download fine at full speed (~12MB/s) without any problems. But after my PC has been on for few hours the problem starts. When ever I download above 5MB/s (sometimes even above 3MB/s) my CPU usage goes to around 75% to 99% and everything stutters, mouse, video, audio etc.

Using Task Manager, it shows that NT Kernel & System is what is using the CPU.
Process Explorer shows Hardware Interrupts and DPCs as the cause for high CPU usage.

I've tried updating my drivers (mouse, keyboard audio, video and network drivers are up to date), but I cannot seem to find USB or hard drive drivers in case it's those that are causing it. If it's even drivers causing it.

I'm using AVG Free and ZoneAlarm.
My HDD is 7200rpm so it should be able to handle 100mb cable connection. (not 100% sure about that)

I've also noticed that my windows has set pagefile at 8190MB, even though it says 12285MB is recommended. But that might not have anything to do with the problem.

Answer:Stuttering and high CPU usage while downloading at high speeds

Hey, some thoughts,

- Is your BIOS up-to-date?
- Are you sure AVG Free and ZoneAlarm work nicely together? They used to be fine couple years ago when they were AV/Firewall but recent versions tend to cross-over. Try uninstalling one? I can't say why would the problem start after sometime though.
- Are you using Ethernet or wireless?
- How is your power options set in control panel? Try High Performance if it is not set that way already.

I guess these drivers are good for you too Latest AMD Chipset Drivers Released

What do I do to take care of this.? Norton anti- virus keeps giving me a Performance alert, & I simply don't know what to do...Can you help me.?I'm stumped.!!!!

Answer:High Memory Usage, & High CPU usage

The thing to do is use Task Manager ( right click on task bar at bottom of the screen, and choose Task Manager ). Then click on the Processes tab, click on the CPU column header so it sorts the rows by cpu usage. So now you will see the processes that use a lot of cpu.

If you are using Vista, or Windows 7; pull down the View menu, choose 'select columns' and then checkmark 'command line'. Then each row will give the location of the program on the hard drive.

I have been having a big problem the last week with my computer. Everything is running incredibly slow. I opened the windows task manager, and it has shown very high CPU usage, often fluctuating between 80% and 100%, though sometimes staying between about 5-20%. The page file usage has been conistently high, the lowest being in the mid-600 kbs, while most often staying around 720 or 730 kbs. These patterns seem to be unaltered by the amount of programs I have running (the problem occurs even when there are absolutely no programs running) or whether I'm on the internet or not. I am very ignorant when it comes to computers, but I suspected it was some sort of spyware problem. However, after scanning with Norton 360, Spybot's Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Microsoft Defender, only a few low-level threats showed up, and fixing them led to no improvement in my computer's performance. The slow functioning seems to be directly related to the times when the CPU usage is high.

My OS is Microsoft XP. My processor is 1.73 GHz. I have 504 MB of RAM. I will attach my HijackThis log below. I hope I haven't forgotten any necessary information, but I would appreciate any help you can offer. I'm becoming very frustrated.

Hi folks

I posted this problem at Spyware Specific forum, but was advised to post here.

Recently when I use RealProducer Plus v.10 to convert mpeg2 clips to rmvb, it takes a long time to do so. When I checked, RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage - as much as 94-95%, causing total CPU usage to be 95-98%. I have scanned with Norton and Adaware - all ok. Then I used Spy Sweeper - it found and cleared Csmin. Howveer, the problem still remains when I use RealProducer.

CPU usage without using RealProducer

CPU usage using RealProducer

Will my CPU will be damaged if CPU usage is so high?

Please help to take a look at my .exe processes. Are they OK?
What is PQV2iSvc.exe?

Please advise. Thanks a lot!

Answer:RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage? Will high CPU usage damage CPU?

To answer your question about PQV2iSvc.exe is part of Power Quest drive image and Norton Ghost drive backup software.

Converting video formats can be a resource intensive process. Unless your system temps are getting really high there shouldn't be any damage to the CPU.

Well I've just bought a new Hard Drive, a Maxtor 160gb IDE drive. I've installed it(was my first time).

When I did everything that needed to be done(My Computer>Manager>Disk management>etc) and even before that, the drive was saying that it is a 31Gb hard drive, when it ain't. It shows up everywhere where you can see how much disk space it has and how much is left.

Have I done something thing wrong? Portioned wrong? Like I said, I'm new to it, I don't know what else to do, so this is my best resort.

Any help would be greatly accepted.
Thanks-Matt.

I just bought a new Hard drive because my last one ended up not working. It's a 2 Terabyte Hard internal hard drive from Seagate. When I put it in my computer to install Windows 10, it said it had 0.0 space left. So I connect it to my laptop (with a sata cord I bought) to see what's the issue and I can't do anything to it. Can't format it (I think it needs to be initialized first cause currently, disk management has it labeled as unknown), can't initialize it (Says request failed due to fatal device hardware error) can't delete anything either. I'm so perplexed because this is a new hard drive, why is this happening?

Edit: In the first pic, the non-working drive is Drive 1. In the second pic its drive 2

Hello people. I'm new to the forum and the reason was a problem :

It all started when I had a Windows 8 PC. I did some customizations tweaks in the 'System32' folder which affected the explorer.exe. Then I tried to rescue it by booting Mint from a flash drive but due to some errors, I decided to change the OS to Ubuntu. Everything was fine but my father disliked it 'cause I erased each and every data while installing . Then he took it to the repair workshop and had Windows 7 installed (which I'm currently using). I had a hard drive of about 128gb. We bought a new hard drive of 500gb (Windows 7 ). But after install, the old HDD did not show up in the 'My computer'. But when I tried booting from a flash drive, it was there and all data was safe ( but not my dad's ). I knew it!.
Now, when I booted again in Windows, it disappeared again. Happens every time. What should I do?

If this was too 'story-ful', then sorry.

Answer:Hard Drive not showing up

Open Disk Management (computer - right click - manage - disk management) and see if it is listed there, and has a drive letter assigned to it.

Also, if it is Linux formatted Windows won't see it. Hence no drive letter. You can boot into Linux and copy paste the data to Windows disk. Linux can see NTFS (sometimes need to mount the drive)

A little bit of background:For the last week,  my computer has been giving me warnings that my hard drive was going to fail soon.  So yesterday, I finally got around to working on it.  I started, copy the image of the hard drive to another hard drive I had.  That way I could send the hard drive back to the manufacturer, and not experience any downtime.  When I went to do it (using acronis, by the way) it told me it had some bad sectors (or something of the sort), and that I need to do a chkdsk.  So I went into the recovery console, and ran chkdsk E: /r.  It was taking forever, so I decided to go to sleep for the night.  When I woke up, there were a bunch of errors telling me that I had run out of space on the hard drive for repairs (I had 200gb remaining...), and it exited with error code 50 and said that it couldn't save the log.  I tried to boot back up, and now, it won't even detect the disk half the time (the only reason I know it's detecting it is because it's giving me the "imminent failure on drive 0" message), and when it does, it won't detect it in the installation of windows I installed after the fact.  I've decided on giving up on the hard drive image.  I just want my files!  Is there any way I can get to them?

I normally do a backup by cloning a second hard drive using Ghost. The backup drive is configured the secondary master and removed from the caddy after cloning.

This time the drive is not recognised in Windows XP although it is showing OK in the BIOS as the secondary master.

Any help please. Could it be about drive letters? The cloned disk is C drive as is the primary master disk.

This is my sons laptop. It had vista and 7 installed on it. I am positive it had a virus before it tore up. It wont load windows but I got a disk and when I load it, it doesnt show my harddrive. It shows a drive letter x: This seems like windows is installed on it. I am not sure if it is tho. I downloaded easeus to recovery the drive and it has found the drive. So if the drive was shot, it wouldn't be able to find it would it? When I go into bios it says no ide device. It use to show it. I was going to do a clean install fo windows and went to partition the drive and I messed it up. If anyone could help that would be great!!

Answer:my hard drive is not showing up

First Drive X is the windows installation DVD, it is not the hard drive. I think the first thing to do would be to go to the hard drive manufacturers site and download their hard drive diagnostic test. That would at least give you a pretty good idea if it is a hard drive problem or not. Assuming it passes. I would follow this tutorial on How to Ready an SSD / HDD to Reinstall an Operating System. Is the hard drive making any unusual noises and can you hear it running? Sometimes when you turn the computer on you can hear it spin up.

System - win98se on QDI Kinetiz 7b board. Duron 750 CPU. 512 mb 133 sdram. Master HDD 40gb WD, slave 20gb WD, CD-RW + DVD on secondary IDE. System was working fine until yesterday. I reformatted the master HD whilst trying to get my Duron 1300 working(see previous post). It didn't work, so I returned to the Duron750, reformatted again (Format c: /s). I then transferred the backed up system from slave drive using Drive Image 2002.(had to use the boot from A: drive route for some reason - kept getting "programme carried out illegal operation" when using the normal Disc Copy route). Everything seemed to be OK until I came to use the system today. "My computer" only shows one hard drive. BIOS sees 2, System Devices sees 2 but there is no drive number against the second and no option to assign a hard drive. I can boot from either by changing the BIOS boot order. When I look in Drive Image 2002 Disk 1 shows as Main Drive (C) 20 gb and Disk 2 shows as Main Drive(\\.\disk2part1 also 20gb). I've obviously done something to cause this but cannot see what. Any help would be appreciated. I'm stumped.

Answer:2nd hard drive not showing

I have exactly the same problem. I used partition magic to create another partition in FAT for Bootmagic and now it doesn't show my second hard drive. In 'My computer' it shows my main partition (XP) and Bootmagic partition.Drive Image 2002 still sees the second hard drive but like what BrianW said; in this format:\\.\disk2part1. Partition magic show the second hardd rive as hidden but it cannot unhide it.Can anyone offer advice to BrianW an me?Is there a manual way to show the second hard drive?

I recently bought an extra internal hard drive for my computer - which runs windows vista. I installed it and put the power cable and SATA cable in and it shows up in Device Manager. But it doesn't show up in my computer as an additional hard drive. I believe I have to format it or something. How do I do that?

Answer:New hard drive not showing up!!!

Does your new drive have a letter assigned to it?
Device manager can create a new simple volume that formats it for you.
Just in case you are not familiar with it please follow:
Right click computer and select manage, select disk management
your new disk should show up if you go to full screen.
Then right click your new drive and select New Simple Volume.

Kinda new at this, but here goes. I have a Dell Dimension 4300 that's about 4 yrs old, running XP. Well, it was. Want to reload XP with total reformat, however when I turn on CPU I get message that reads "strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility. When I enter setup, no hard drive or cd rom shows as being installed. Where do I go from here?

Answer:CPU not showing cd rom or hard drive

What do you mean by turning on your cpu?, dont you mean turning on your computer. In the bios you need your first boot device set as cdrom then save changes. Put your xp disk in the cd drive and reboot, the xp disk will boot allowing you to patition and format the hard drive.

I have a problem,

I was recently installing windows xp pro on my pc and got onto the partition screen, I accidently deleted the partition from the slave drive (all my files) and when i booted off the primary then the slave drive was missing.

I tried going to control panel>admin tools>computer management>disk management, and although this allows me to add a partition i can only access that partition and none of my old files.

Is there anyway i can get my old files back?

Cheers

Answer:hard drive not showing up

go [right click my computer>manage>disk management]
find your new drive there, then format it or partition it etc.

alternatively you can download an app from teh hdd manufacturer's website and use that to initialise your new hdd.

hi folks,
i have a win-98se pc, pentium II 400mhz. i recently installed a western digital 80 g hard drive on it using w-d's utility called datalifeguard. I installed this drive as d: drive. all worked ok. after a couple of weeks, my pc started freezing on boot up and during normal operation frequently. i copied all my data from c: drive onto this d: drive. i finally decided to reformat my c: drive and re-install win-98se. i did and after install, i couldn't get the d: drive to show up. everybody suggests to reformat the new d: drive and it should work ok. but i have data on it, and i can't do an fdisk. the drive shows up on bios, and even shows up on western digital's utility program on drive info. is there anyway i can get this drive to show up on explorer or on "mycomputer"? how can i get my data back? please help me.

Answer:hard drive not showing up.

hav eyou check your cabling or drive jumpers
I would make the D drive a slave on 2nd ide
it will change the drive letter
this utility you used may have cuased 98 not to read the drive now.
paragon partition manager may be able to remount the drive for you
there are other disk mangers out there also like acronis
these 2 I am familiar with
I think 98 has issues with drives larger than 32gb
may want to read up on that

Answer:Hard drive not showing

Most likely a hardware fault of some sort. It might be the fan you are hearing. There should be a hard drive light somewhere - does it flash during boot up?Let us know the make and model number of your computer.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi,
I have upgraded my comptuter with a new mother board.
I only have 2 PCI hard drives.
but this new motherboard takes SATA drives.
There is also one slot for a PCI drive.
Problem is, I need to plug my second PCI drive.
So I bought a PCI to serial ATA RAID & IDE Controller so i can connect my second hard drive.
This controller is connected on my mother board.
My second hard drive is connected to the controller with its big flat wire.
I booted Windows XP, the device manager seems to recognize it but my hard drive is not showing...
Can anyone help me with this.

Also I bought a nVidia graphic Card with 256 MRAM.
My motherboard is also using 256 MRAM because when I look at my nvidia card's properties, it shows 512 MRAM.
Should I disable the RAM from the mother board because it is using my RAM (i have 2 gigs)

Thanks guys!

I'm troubleshooting a computer where it runs through the safe mode select screen over and over. Can't get to safe mode or anyplace else. Slaved drive to my computer and it doesn't show up. I've tried jumpers in every position but it's still a blank in my computer. Does this mean the hd crashed?

Thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to answer this.

I just bought a WD 500 gig SATA Hard drive from newegg. I already have 2 drives in this system, but they are PATA drives. My Bios is not recognizing this drive from what I can tell. I've never put one of these in , but from what I understand they are supposed to be pretty plug and play.

On my boot up screen where it shows what the bios is doing and detecting, it does say "4th master : External Disk 0 RGL10364 Ultra DMA Mode-5, S.M.A.R.T. Capable and Status OK"

Then after the detection is done, it tells me 4th Master Hard Disk Error.

When I go into my Bios, I don't see the drive at all listed in my hard drive section. But on the main screen that fourth IDE master slot shows external Disk 0, and when I click on it it says the device is a Hard Disk, but that the size is 0MB. Its like it sees it, but not all of it.

I have tried disconnecting all drives except this one, changing cables, changing slots. The cables I'm using are the ones that came with my mobo and say serial ata on them, so I am assuming they should work. My power supply should be big enough and I'm using the power cable coming from it that is designed for sata.

I can't think of anything else to put on here, but if you need more info, I'll try and supply it.

I have RMA'd this to newegg, but I'm afraid I might be missing something, and don't won't to pay the 8 dollars shipping to get a new... Read more

I have a gateway computer running windows 7 ultimate and im trying to add another hard drive but its not showing up anywhere. My primary hard drive is a 3.5 sata 500gb and im trying to add a 3.5 IDE 200gb hard drive. I've looked in computer management and everything but the hdd is not showing anywhere. Can anyone explain what i should do?

Answer:2nd hard drive not showing up

You didn't fill out your specs completely so I don't know what kind of motherboard you have. Does it support IDE? If you could fill in your System Specs it would help. Could you also post a Snip of your expanded Disk Management so we can look at that.

My 2nd hard drive which I store all my media on is no longer accessible. About a week ago I started up my PC, which is attached to my TV, and my Avast antivirus popped up with warnings about a bunch of viruses. I posted in the Security/Malware forums for help, but have not received any yet. I also lost access to my 2nd hard drive where my media is stored, so I am unsure if they are related.

It was showing up in My Computer and my Device Manager, just not accessible. Every time I would try open it I would get an I/O device error message. Today is the first time it is not even showing up in My Computer or Device Manager.

I'm a computer noob and do not know how to approach this problem. I am good at following directions and Google, and is the only reason I was able to install the 2nd HDD on my own.

Where do I start? Is there anything that I can do? I would really like to salvage the data on the HDD if it is possible.

It is a Seagate Barracuda ST315005N4A1AS-RK SATA 3Gb/s 1.5TB 5900RPM 32MB Cache.

ok, ive been browsing through the site looking for the solution to my problem for 2 days, and while ive come apon quite a bit of usefull info, none of it was 2 helpful. so in any case heres my probelm:

i had an 120 GB western digital drive in my old computer, and figured id slap it on my new computer. its installed and the jumper setting is on slave, but it refuses to work.

it shows up in the device manager, but when i go to the drive manager its not there.

i dont know if this makes a differance but my master hardrive is on a serial ATA cable while the slave hard drive is on a parallel ATA cable.

Any one have any ideas?

Answer:2nd hard drive not showing up

Is there a master device on the ata cable too?
Have you tried setting it to cable select?
Does the new drive show up in bios?

thanks

Answer:hard drive and ram not showing...

They must be showing in Windows if CPU-Z can see them, since it gets the info from Windows.

If you can't see a hard drive then go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management
Is the 500GB drive there?

As for the RAM, press press windows key+pause/break; how much RAM does it say you have?

My laptop (Lenovo Y510p) is always at 100% disk usage for the first 15-20 minutes of starting up, and for intermittent periods afterwards. During this period, everything essentially freezes including the Start Menu, Task Manager, and all other apps running. After about 5 minutes, the hard drive "catches up" and everything starts working again.

The strange part is that when looking at Task Manager / Resource Monitor, the total read/write of the hard drive does not appear to be very high - ie it will be at 100% disk usage but the highest program is reading/writing maybe 0.1MB/s.

This is causing the laptop to become borderline unusable. I have to leave the laptop running in order for it to be usable, as shutting it down / putting it to sleep will cause the hard drive to go back to 100%, and everything comes to a standstill. Please help!

I've attached some pictures which should illustrate what's going on hopefully.

Specs: Lenovo Y510p, 2 years old, running Windows 10 Home 64-bit (upgraded from Windows 8.1).

Question: Hard drive usage

I had xp to the point where when I was not using the computer my hard drive access light would never flash, 7 does make use of the drive when I am not. Does anyone know what it is doing?

Answer:Hard drive usage

Indexing and defragging when the system is not under load. Also prefeteching applications and caching them into RAM so they launch quicker the next time you need them.
