sequencing 'RECENT DOCUMENTS' in date order

Question: sequencing 'RECENT DOCUMENTS' in date order

I always used to see my Recent Documents in (roughly) date order but now they in in alphabetic order. It's a trivial point but I would prefer to change it back - how do I do it????

Preferred Solution: sequencing 'RECENT DOCUMENTS' in date order

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: sequencing 'RECENT DOCUMENTS' in date order

Click on the Date column header. Click again to reverse the date order.

I'm using windows XP professional and have 'my recent documents' on the start menu. It always lists them in alphabetical order, but I should like to arrange them chronologically (as with windows 98se). Is this possible please?thanksJohn

Answer:Getting my recent documents in date order (XP)

Not true that Start>Documents are always in alphabetical order - you must have done a right click and then Sort By Name at some time; Sort By Name is also available in Programs, Favourites etc.If you disable this it will only list the documents, files and other items used in the order they were undertaken.

Can I change the order? Eliminate some? How?

Answer:order of recent documents

if you want to change the order you can see them in you can just drag the one you want to be first in front of the of the one that is first.

if you want to delete multiple documents you click on one (single click) press the ctrl button the single click on the next then the next and so on until you have highlighted them all then press delete.

I gave up trying to get the Recent Documents link to work on the Start Menu - what is the point of them being in alphabetical order??

So I just created a shortcut to the Recent folder on my desktop and started using that. But even there I can't keep it sorted in 'date modified' order. It stays that way for an hour or so, but when I go back the folder has sorted itself in alphabetical order again, and I have to start right-clicking again! Maddening.

I did once get the link on the Start Menu to sort in date order, but I don't recall how I did it sadly - I certainly can't get it to work now. But surely the folder itself should stay in the sort view I set for it? Why does it change back all by itself and how can I fix it so that it stays in date modified order?

Thanks,

Martin

Answer:Recent Documents sort order

If you first open Windows Explorer and go to your actual Recent Items folder (located at C:\Users\{name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent) you can highlight the folder, change to 'Details' view and go into the Column Header to change your sort order to Date Modified.

THEN make a shortcut to that folder, and you'll have approximately 6 months worth of 'Recent Items' sorted by the date modified --- as you wanted.

my files are all over the place as far as the date of the file is concerned. They range from 2003 to current, but are random and I can find "added" files that I need. I only see one page of files and I know there are more than that and I know that many of these are recent. How do I re-order them by current date first?

For example, in d:\, I have got three txt files:

How can I rename them in batch like this:

file1.txt

I know I can do it in Windows Explorer by selecting all the files, pressing F2 and typing "file (1)" and this produces similar file names (though it is not file1 but file (1))
But I wanna know how I can do it in a bat file.

Could anyone who knows it help me? Many thanks!!!

Why does it say that I will receive the laptop 2 weeks from now when it says that I should expect it within 1-3 days?

Answer:Dell site says XPS 15 gets delivered in 1-3 days, the order date for my order is 2 weeks from now...

Generally when that happens there has been a burst of orders, or there is a part on back order and the sales site hasn't been updated yet.  The delivery times are just estimates and could be sooner or later depending on various conditions.

When I go to the top left "Office Button" in Excel and go to my Recent Documents I can open most files, but there's one which does not open. I can open it by going to Open and finding it in my folders or directly from my Windows Explorer files, so the file is not a problem. I've tried opening it and closing it from both of these methods to see if I could reestablish a link, but that didn't work. I've also looked at "Excel Options" in the Advanced section, but didn't see anything that looked like it was the problem.

Again, I can open most recent files from Recent Documents, but this one doesn't work. Has anyone had this issue and fixed it?
Thanks!

Answer:Excel Recent Document not opening from Recent Documents

Perhaps this MS website may help you. It is applicable to Excel 2007, but if you read paragraph 3 under the first heading there is reference to opening files using Explorer & then finding they wont open in Excel, which might help you.

It looks like the 31 March deadline for the latest Edge promotions is the date of invoice rather than the date of order. Given Lenovo's reported long build time and slow delivery (= late invoice), I suspect that ording now from the Lenovo web site will see an invoice date outside the qualifying period. Even a dealer who says he can 'get one in' may not deliver and invoice until April or beyond. I think the only option is to find a dealer who unequivocally has current stock. Can anyone shed any light on the likely position. I do, though, wonder about trying to take advantage of Lenovo Cashback at all, given the horror stories reported here.

Answer:Edge 31 March promotion deadline - order date or invoice date?

My experience with cashback is a deathly silence from Lenovo to emails asking for progress on the cash or even recognition that there has been a registration for cashback...Currently considering giving Lenovo some publicity on the matter.Unless you have a lot of time to possibly get no where I would steer clear of the alleged cashback scheme...

Hi there. I have a feeling that I'm going to feel really dumb when I realize how to do this... but I've been baffled and nothing online has quite worked or applied to my issue. Here goes:

I'm running Windows 7, and have a habit of using the recent documents separated by program on the start menu. In other words, I'll go to Start, highlight Microsoft Excel (as it's a program I use regularly and therefore stays pretty close to the top of the start menu), and mouse over to the right to see my recent Excel documents.

Early on in my Windows 7 use, I had right clicked on some recent files and selected "Remove from this list" and they vanished from the recent Excel document list. However, I can't get them to ever come back.

I've tried resetting my recent document settings under Start Menu properties, even deleting "recent application data" files according to other sites. If I navigate to the files through the folders, I can open spreadsheets and have them show up, but the ones I've removed from the list will not show up, and I don't understand why.

I'm more than willing to provide any additional information, but hopefully someone can tell me this is a rather simple solution.

Thanks!

Question: Recent Documents

Hi, somebody may have asked this question before but the search function seems to be broken right now.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 on a fresh install on a new computer, and since installation I noticed that I don't have the "My Recent Documents" in my start menu. I did searches on the internet, and people could only come up with enabling it through the Start Menu properties (Start Menu Customize button). Unfortunately, the "My Recent Documents" option isn't there either, like it should've been according to Microsoft's help info on their website.

I also immediately noticed that this problem extends to further than just the start menu, as some of my commonly used programs also don't save recent files. For instance, Microsoft Word (and other Office components), Adobe Photoshop, etc. None of them have the recently opened files (it's grayed out). I thought it may be because my profile on my computer was in read-only or some other related cause. But other programs like web browsers are able to save history, and other programs like games are able to save passwords and settings.

Some additional information that might be useful: I'm only running one profile on this computer, which is an administrator account, because I'm the only one that uses this computer. It is password protected (but the problem is the same whether or not I put a password).

Any help would be nice. Thanks.

Windows now maintains individual "Recent Documents" lists for each application listed. Do you see the arrow to the right of an application link? Click on that to see all the documents most recently opened by that application. Also, if when an icon for an application is either open or pinned to the taskbar, you can right-click it's icon to see a similar list of recently opened documents:

I have a worksheet with Project names across the top and House Types down the left. The grid contains only dates of when a house type was used in a project. Is there a way to have a column at the end of the projects that will read back along the rows and return the most recent date in the row?Is it then possible for the cell (or cells) containing that date to be highlighted?

Answer:Excel - most recent date

The "MAX" function will give you the maximum in a range of upto 30 specified cells, which could all be in the same row. "DMAX" also does the same for a specified range within a single column. You could then use conditional formatting to highlight the cell who's date is equal to the maximum that's been found.

I have no idea what happened, but my pinned IrfanView icon in the start menu has stopped showing recent documents. The "arrow button" is still there, indicating that there should be some documents to display, but none show up. Even the pinned documents are gone. If I open new documents with the program, the list fails to repopulate.

How can I fix this?

Thanks!

Answer:Recent documents not working

Hello Higgins,

If you had recently cleared or turned off and on your recent items, then it may take a bit after opening items before they start showing back up again in the list.

You might also check to make sure that you do not have clear recent items on exit turned on well. If you log off often, then it may never get a long enough chance to repopulate the recent items list for them before it's cleared again.

Hope this may help,
Shawn

Hi, I use XP Home, and I'm looking for a way to specify what type of files are allowed in my "recent documents" folder. I would prefer to do it without using a separate program (maybe a registry hack of some sort?), but if that's not possible, I would also consider a recommended (and cheap) program. I only want office documents in it, but it's always cluttered with jpeg, help files, pdfs, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Recent Documents Question

I don't have XP, but got a lot of registry hacks from this place and this might be what you are looking for:
Disable Recent Documents History
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/545/
To accomplish what you want you would need to make 2 registry files to click on (one to disable it when your doing other things, and one to enable it when your working on your office documents).

This has a location to download the Windows Registry Guide 2003 which may have something you could use, I haven't opened mine yet.
http://www.winguides.com/guides.php?guide=registry

There is a link on the site to suggest hacks too, so you might try it.
E for effort, hopefully you can find something there that will help.

I don't even know if this goes here, but oh well. Here is my question, is there an app, or a way to tell XP to only display one file type in MRD? All I want to show up in MRD are .doc files for all my school stuff, I like having the MRD in the start menu, but the ridiculous amount of different files I access on a daily basis are pushing are my important ones off the list. I think it was after I used one of those windows crap cleaners that everything went wrong.

On the XP Start Menu (the new style), its not even there.
On the classic start menu, its there, but its not functional (meaning, recently opened documents don't get added). It acts as a menu as it should, but all i see listed is "My Documents" and "My Pictures", then a line, and no document shortcuts listed.

I have tried a lot of things.

I checked the Start Menu preferences by right clicking the taskbar and clicking properties. The checkbox to show most recently accessed documents in the advanced tab of the customize window is checked.
I checked to see if it was TweakUI's fault. Everything looked fine with all the options relating to it.
I checked the corresponding registry entry to the start menu properties thing. It exits, and it is set to the proper DWORD value of 2. (\HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Start_ShowRecentDocs)
I checked GPedit for the proper choices. Me being a student, I purchased Office Student edition, which is more than enough.

I was just wondering though, I use my school's "storage" drive (each student gets one) and my local drive on my laptop. In the recent documents, I don't want to see any documents from any drive except mine.

Example:

My local drive with all my documents is D:
My schools drive with everything necessary there is G:

Is it possible to limit the Recent Documents list to only files from D? Does this make any sense? If not, please reply back!

Thanks!

Answer:How to clear My Recent Documents

Welcome to Major Geeks bbolin 06 your "Recent Documents" file if I am not mistaken is self clearing after reboot if you are using MS Works as it is ONLY a temp file. Could be wrong, but a simple reboot will tell you. The "Recent Document" folder will be there but will be empty in my recollection.

Dear ladyharley:

Several months have elapsed since your inquiry, so am wondering if you've found a solution to your problem. The same thing happened to me recently, likely caused by Lenovo security software. Your user account has lost control of the "My Recent Documents" folder. Here's info from Microsoft on taking ownership of a folder/file http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308421

I'm not a techie, but followed a slightly different procedure, which seems to have worked permanently:
1) Via Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Recent
where [username] is your user account (the account must have administrator privileges)
2) Right click on the "Recent" folder and select "Properties" from the pop-up list
3) In the Properties dialog box, click the "Security" tab
4) If you don't see username in "Group or user names&q... Read more

I have a few questions, as a part of my usual cleaning routine should I be deleting my recent documents as well ? I have over 1000 files in my recent documents along with a bunch of folders, most of the files are resized photo's.Normally my routine goes like this:Start-Run-cleanmgr-Temp files.Start-Control Panel-Internet Options-Delete Browsing History.Start-Run-%temp%Empty Recycle Bin.Also how do I find My Recent Documents ? currently the only way I can find my recent documents is through a browse window at a website like Photobucket, whenever I use my photo resizer it sends the new resized photo to my recent documents, I've looked everywhere on my computer but haven't been able to find my recent documents except through a browse window, is there another way to find it ?

Answer:Deleting My Recent Documents ?

Are you sure you're not confusing My Recent Documents with My Documents? They're not the same.My Recent Documents should only contain shortcuts to the files, not the original files themselves. These are the shortcuts show in the pop-out menu of the Start Menu. It should not contain the original files. My Documents is where the original files should be kept, not shortcuts.

Create a tile to obtain recently opened docs folders etc

Recent Items Shortcut - Create in Windows 8

To do this, open up a File explorer window and type the following into the address bar:
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\

This should take you to a folder containing an icon titled, "Recent items". You can create a tile for this icon on your Start Screen by right-clicking it and selecting "Pin to Start".

Enjoy......

I think what happened. Sunday night began a manual backup by trying to select entire My Docs and copy to laptop DVD R/W drive disk. Computer said it would take 2 days so 35 mins in I cancelled. It said there was a large set of temp files and I could retain or remove, I removed.

Went to bed.

Next day 11:04 am ran a malware prgm called CacheCleaner. Have run it 1000+ times and no issue this time.

Few days later go to access Quicken - no can do. File is damaged. Went to open my budget file in excel, says" file is in a different format than specified by the file extension. ..." Open it anyways, its completely empty. Go to open a MS word doc, cannot open, says there are problems with the contents. PDF problems too.

Every file has been mysteriously updated Date Modified to 1/4/2010 11:04am. None will open. Any file not dated 1/4/2010 11:04am opens fine.

Was there some temp pointer type file created during my aborted backup operation that was then deleted when I emptied my temp files etc when I ran Cache Cleaner.
This is horribly impactful b/c my last backup is old. Please help if you can.....
Thanks

Hi, I have installed Corel Graphics Suite X4 on my Windows 7 machine, and I can't access the recent files nor the anchored files from the superbar or the start menu. In the start menu it simply does not expand when I click on the arrow, and right clicking on the superbar has a similar effect. First I thought there was something wrong with explorer.exe so I ended it and started it again. The problem continued, so I reinstalled Corel with no success. I have to say that it ONLY seems to be a problem with that program in particular, other programs (including others from the same suite) do not seem to show this behavior. I attached some caps to show what I mean.
Thank you.

Answer:Can't access CorelDRAW Recent Documents

Hello Thom, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you can open and see recent items for other programs and that you just installed the program, it may take it a bit for the recent items to show up as you are opening them. Give it a day with opening the recent items off and on to see if they show up afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I am suddenly no longer able to open the My Recent Documents file without it crashing Explore. I can open the folder, but after about two or three seconds the hour glass displays and a message displays that Windows is closing this activity due to an error with the .exe file and is doing so to protect itself. I select OK and another box displays asking if I want to send a report to MS. I did and it also asked for additional information about my system so they could see a more clear snapshot of what was occurring when the "crash" happened. No responses yet. I am concerned that even though I am running the most current version of NAV with current virus definitions and MS Antispyware Beta something has infected my system. I accessed a file on the web about 30 minutes prior to this happening and when I accessed the file I got two messages that a virus was present. It did not look like NAV was posting the message and since the message included instruction to click on it to fix the problem I ignored that. I have scanned my system with AdAware using their most current definitions. Could not access Spybot S & D's site for their most current updates to scan my system. When I left home this morning, NAV was scanning again to see if anything is detected. I have not had time to check whether or not this problem is isolated or a true infestation. Does anyone know what could cause My Recent Documents to crash?

Thanks.

Answer:Office 365 - removing recent documents

You would need to go to the app that was used for that document and remove it from the recent documents list within the app. For example if a Word document shows up in the list and you want to remove it; open Word and then in the recent documents list within Word right click on the entry you want to remove and select Remove from list.

I don't think I'm infected, but I can't be sure. Here's the story:

I was donwloading something when, all of a sudden, the computer wanted to start an application for which I do not have a disk. I'm sure you all know the "software not found, please insert CD into drive" screen.

Then I did the following:

-I immediately stopped the download.
-I disconnected from the Internet.
-I went in to the "incomplete files" folder and deleted the files.
-I ran Ad Aware, which found a few bugs, which I delted, then Spy Bot (found nothing) and McAffee (from AOL) which also found nothing.

I haven't used the computer much since then, as I want to read other people's responses to this post before I did anything. What I can say, which is unusual, is that whe I selected the drop down on IE and the "Recent documents", both came up empty. All the files are still on my hard drive, as are my favorties in IE, but it still struck me as odd.

Should I be concerned that My Recent Documents and the Internet Explorer address bar were both empty after three virus scans? Is this a symptom of a virus or the result of some good, thorough virus scanning?

I hope you are all having wonderful, safe and enjoyable holidays and I hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks!

When I click the "beach ball" at the upper left corner of the page, a new window opens and shows me the most recent files I have worked on. The nice thing is there is a push pin that I can select to make sure that file always appears as a Recent Document.

I have figured out how to increase the number of files shown as Recent Documents. Another great feature!

It also shows files that I have deleted from my computer. If I click on such a file, I am told, The file does not exist or it has been moved. Information that I already know. Here is my question. How can I show only Recent Documents that actually exist on my computer?

Your guidance, as always, is greatly appreciated.

I am interested in the recent documents list as well. You say that you figured out how to include more documents, just how is that?

Also, I have a couple of files that I use a couple of times each week, but I can't get them to stay in the recent documents list. After I open them, and close / save them, they are in the recent docs list for a day or two, but they disappear before I next use them. Conversely, I have file in my recent docs list that I haven't used in a year. ( Really )

XPsp2. In Documents and Settings, 'my name' folder, these two folders are hidden as protected system folders. I put up a previous thread about the seemingly missing Cookies folder, but I found it hidden. I don't recall these two folders being hidden, and I didn't hide them. Wonder if something triggered Windows to hide them, or if they should be hidden at all. Went to the folders properties tab but am unable to remove the hidden attribute...checkbox is faded. It's marked read only as well. Anyone have info on this?

So in Windows 7, whatever applications you have pinned to the start menu sometimes have a triangle facing out, and if you click on that triangle, it will show the recent documents you've worked with that application. As the title says, there is one application that just won't show the list no matter how many times I click on the triangle. However, other applications DO show that list. How is it that only one application is causing trouble while others aren't?

Answer:Recent documents for an application not showing up

Hello Kyle B -

Is this related to M/s Office, Student, or a similar App ?? I fail to see this on my Windows 7 Home Premium desktop.

I work mostly in Word, sometime Excel (MS Office Home and Business 2010). Sometimes, the recent documents window is pretty large, which is what I like. Other times, it's gone. To clarify, I reach that window by clicking File, and the list appears. I cannot figure out what causes it to disappear. I'd like it stay full of the documents I most often use. I have set the number of recent documents at 25.

So what am I doing to trigger clearing of the recent documents? Or is it a setting?

Thanks.

Do you use anything like CCleaner?
If so, you need to uncheck Office 2010 under the Applications tab..
