cmos battery discharging ??????

Question: cmos battery discharging ??????

Wasn't sure whether to post this or not but it's bugging the crap out of me (pardon my french) about 6 month's ago my cmos battery died, the mobo (asrock KS78X) was about 2 months old at the time and i thought it strange for the battery to die, i put it down to the mobo being on the shelf for a while and other contributing factors (shelf storage alone wouldn't kill the battery, surely?), 2 month's after this the battery died again, suspicous i checked the voltage (v.meter) coming out the battery and sure enough it was dead, a little peeved i replaced the battery again and 2 weeks down the line the batery was dead again!!!, i duly replaced the battery (whilst thinkng why i shouldn't go get a replacement mobo!)and it's been fine ever since.i wonder what the problem was (or is) as the battery has been fine since, i've used branded battery's all the time and don't think it's down to bad luck, any clues????

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: cmos battery discharging ??????

Bad luck seems to be stretching it a bit, have you changed any hardware? perhaps you had the mobo in 'n out the case at some time causing a small short!I know its not the same but last week I had a pc that every time I plugged a power lead into it, it knocked out the router and took my network down! had to change a brand new PSU!

Hoping this problem will be noticed by more people, the original post on this issue came from:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/T470-Linux-Power-Bridge-wrong-discharge-order/td-p/365...https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/63odjr/t470_battery_order_question_internal_discharges/ Brief description: same problem with OS including Win 10, Ubuntu 16.04, Gentoo etc. The internal battery always gets discharged first regardless its remaining power, which is generally harmless but seems not so good for the internal battery life. With my own T470 machine, updated with the latest 1.29 BIOS, this problem remains. According to searching results online, this little bug came with early versions of X's and T' including T460. PS: this issue had been successfully fixed with T460 via BIOS update 1.26, hoping it would be fixed with T470 sooner or later. Best regards.

Hi, I set my laptop to "Battery protection mode" which is supposed to limit charging to 60%. I noticed that once my laptop is at 60%, it switches to A/C for a few minutes, then it discharges by 1% and then charges again to 60%. This process repeats every few minutes. Is this supposed to happen? I'm worried that each time it discharges and charges again, I am wasting a charge cycle.  When I allow it to charge to 100% under "Battery Fully charged mode", it will switch to A/C when fully charged and does not discharge again so I don't think there's an issue with my battery.  Thanks for any help!

Answer:Battery Protection Mode - U410 Battery fluctuates around 60%, keeps charging and discharging.

It is fine for the laptop dont worry.

Wrote a month or so ago about a faulty U330 battery.  I replaced it with a new one and am having the same issue--rapid discharge. For example, the battery power goes from 100% to 95% within 3 mintues, from 95% to 73% within 15 minutes.  With the original battery, I noticed that its power could stay at 0% for quite some time before the computer shut down. The battery lasts a decently long time, but the real issue is that I pretty much have spontaneous shutdowns since I can't predict the actual power remaining. Could this be a Win 7 issue and not an issue with the battery's actual capacity? Any other suggestions on how to fix this?

Answer:U330 Battery Issue--New Battery, Still Discharging Fast

Hey Gurbly,

Curious to know is the replacement battery that you bought is it from Lenovo or is it a generic brand battery ?

If this is a Lenovo battery, might I suggest the following link :

http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/Welcome-FAQs-Knowledge-Base/How-can-I-increase-battery-life/ta-p/244800

If the above does not help, could you try the following.

1. Replacement Battery to be drained.
2. Replacement Battery to be fully charge. During this time do not turn on the U330
3. Once fully charge, turn on computer and login to your operating system. Do not launch any application and if possible disable any apps that auto starts.
4. Change the power management to "do not turn off hard drive and monitor" when battery is used
5. Adjust screen brightness to 50%
6. Leave the laptop idle,
7. Check within 3-5 minutes if the battery level drops from 100% to 95%
8. record your finding and reply back.

Everything is brand new, less then 6 months old. My battery will discharge itself while it is plugged in to AC power. The meter on the screen will read 100% charge, then after a few days (while always being plugged in) it will drop to 99%, then a day or two later to 98% and sometimes down to 97%. And if i unplug it and plug it right back in, it will not charge, i will have to leave it unplugged to get it below the charging point (which is i believe is 96-97%) or lower before it will charge back up to 100%. From there it all starts again. Is this normal, is the battery bad, is there something wrong with my charging system. Thanks in advance

Answer:R61 Battery Discharging

The battery discharge itself sometimes when there is a peak power demand from running intensive CPU and GPU intensive task, it is normal and you shouldn't really worry about it.

I bought a tecra A3-152 a month ago and i have a serious battery problem.
I checked toshiba's forum and found that M30X had the same problem.

My battery is discharging even when the power adapter is plugged... Quite weird...
It appears when I watch TV on an external USB Box or when I use Photoshop (2 things that use CPU).

Toshiba Power Utility is still on "Full Power, AC plugged" but the percentage of battery is decreasing.

I updated the BIOS to version 1.70 but nothing.

I need my computer at the moment but i think i will soon send it to Toshiba Techies.

Does anyone has the same problem?

Seb

Answer:Tecra A3-152 Battery discharging

Hi Sebastien,

Since your Notebook is so new I would definitely return it under the warranty for the problem to be checked out.

However, It would be interesting to find out if the problem still persists if you remove the Toshiba Power Utility and revert to the standard Microsoft version. This would then give some clue as to the nature of the problem.

Best of luck

Greetings, I probably should've posted sooner but may as well. I've owned this Lenovo N200 0689 laptop since early 2008 bought from BIG W, and was supplied with 12 months warranty which had no problem at all during that period.  However, it's been 18 months past now, and about 3 months ago the battery on the laptop suddenly didn't want to power itself.  It comes up on windows that it's 100% or whatever, but when I pull out the AC, it shuts off instantly. Now, I've just left the laptop unused for about 1 month now, and just turned it on again.  Windows says the battery is 70%, and it appears to be charging (ie: flashing green indicator), however it will still shut off the instant AC is removed.  In addition to that, after about 2 hours plugged in there hasn't been a change in battery charge percentage.  (It's been 70% for a while now.)  A bit of googlesearching in the past few months, I've bumped across the N100 battery recall stuff due to failures.  While this is N200, I have reason to believe this laptop could be using the same battery as the N100.  I also feel that the laptop having worked without issues during the warranty period, I find it very disconcerting the problems on the battery would arise, 3 months after being expired from warranty.  In addition, the battery recall stuff only applied to N100 laptops only, and not N200 when the symptoms are exactly the same. I've already read the FAQs on the website,... Read more

Answer:N200 Battery not discharging

An update, now the battery is saying 69% left in Windows, and I've kept the laptop on AC.  The laptop battery green LED is still blinking periodically, but it seems as if it's not really charging either now...

My A30 laptop has started randamly discharging the battery whilst the mains power supply is connected. When the battery reaches 0% laptop will switch off. The front Lights show the mains power is connected. Removing the power plug and reconnecting does not solve the problem, only rebooting or hibernating starts the battery charging.

I have removed the Toshiba power management utility and the same problem occurs with Microsoft power utility. I have tried re-installing the latest Toshiba power management still no resolution.

I don't think its a loose power connector because the light shows the power is connected. Has anyone else seen this or is this a sympton of the battery needing replacing (laptop 18 months old)?

Answer:Satellite A30 Battery Discharging

Hi Andy,

My SA30 does exactly the same thing. The AC LED remains lit throughout as does the ON LED but the battery LED will go out. The system will show as running on battery which will progressively discharge (even though the mains LED is still on), and eventually the notebook will hibernate.

By trial and error I have found how to trigger this behaviour. I just need to apply slight pressure to the side of the DC plug in the back of the notebook and all the front LEDs will flash on for a split second and then they all extinguish except the ON and AC LEDs.

I believe that the problem is a momentary loss of contact between the inside of the DC plug and the central pin in the socket on the back of the notebook. This would explain why the problem used to occur when I moved the notebook or the mains cable.

I now anchor the DC cable to the back of the notebook in order to prevent any lateral movement of the DC plug and so far the problem has not recurred even if I pick up and move the notebook around the room.

I have purchased the aspire vn7-791g  less than 2 months ago, at first the battery seemed fined, it could last for up to 4 hrs. however yesterday after fully charging it it just discharged after just 1 hour. I left the battery to charge all night, and the next day it was still discharging pretty fast (at 100% i had 1hr 10 min remaining) this is the first time i encounter this problem. My laptop is new.  any help?

Answer:battery discharging very fast

Hi elienaoum,

I would let the system run and completely discharge on it's own. Then let it fully charge and see what happens. Another test you could run would be to fully charge it and then leave it in the BIOS to see how long it lasts. This would tell you if it's actually the battery or possibly a battery option.

You can also go into your power settings and make sure that the battery setup is properly configured (you just don't want it to be on Max CPU, Max Brightness, etc...).

If it continues to be short, I'd suggest contacting support as they may need to setup services to get that resolved for you.

Thanks,Cory

I have a t400 and my battery (9cell) is discharging even when the laptop is plugged in.BIOS is verified, so when it is shutdown it won't consume useless power (lan, usb, etc).Even if the laptop is plugged, when _shutdown_, it still consumes power from battery. Apparently it also happens if it is _on_.Power manager is on "always fully charge". It was also set on "optimise battery". The power consumption is not much but is decreasing by 1% every 1 - 1.5 days.Is this normal ? How can I fix it ?

Hello, I've recently changed my laptop's battery as the previous one had stopped working due to overcharging because I thought that when the laptop battery gets fully charged then the laptop will run on external power but I found my thinking wrong when the battery stopped working. I changed it for Rs. 6000/- at HP Official Service Centre Chandigarh 5-6 moths ago. But now my present battery is also discharging fast & I've not overcharged my present battery a single time. Please help me with this battery problem.

Answer:Battery discharging too fast

Hi Mark1nick, welcome to the forum,

there are several possible causes of this and it's a question which has been asked quite often in the forum. One common reason is when WOL (Wake On Lan) is activated in BIOS.

I've provided links below to a couple of threads with less common solutions I found after a quick search.

I bought a lumia 520 from FLIPKART 3 days ago. The set is discharged within 12 to 14 hours without being any use. Yesterday before, after getting full charged (100%), I shoot a photograph, see a 4 minute video and kept it on table, after few hours I noticed only 10 % percent charge is remain, without any use the charge is finished (Battery saver in on, WiFi is fully off, Bluetooth is off). That means I have to charge my mobile twice or thrice or many more times in a day, when I wish to use it.
Please advice.

Hi, I have a problem with battery on my 1 year old X230 (currently on Windows 8.1). My battery is behaving weird lately. Once it is fully charged, it stays at 100% for let's say 3-4 hours and after that it'll go to zero really quickly. What can I do to fix that? Additionally, my fingerprint sensor just stopped working a few months ago. Just like that. Thinkvantage fingerprint sensor cannot detect it anymore. What can cause that?  Thank you. -enero

Answer:X230 battery not discharging

Hi,unfortunately Lenovo doesn't offer Power Manager application for win8 as well the OS doesn't allow to check out battery settings we need using built-in tools.Perhaps installation of Power Manager for win7 in compatibility mode will show you the battery statistics. I mean a cycle count. This one of the key statistic parameters. What to do? 1. Perform a battery reset. No problem in win7 but even in compatibility mode PM might not allow to do that. But I didn't check.2. As the win8 keeps the battery fully charged all the time, it decreases the battery healthy. Solution is to set the battery charge threshold. Again, it's possible but not in PM under win8. Only 3rd party tools do that. Also there are tons attempts to change the registry settings for that purpose here on forum but I can't confirm a success.Regarding the FPR if you don't see anything unusual in BIOS Setup and Device Manager solution is standard - remove and reinstall FPR sw. If that will not resolve an issue disassemble keyboard and palmrest and check out ribbon cable from FPR and its connect to the systemboard.

Hi, I have a Y50-70 which has a strange problem with the battery: even when entirely switched off (not in sleep or hibernate, but shut down), it loses about 10% per 24 hours on the battery life, until going down to 0%. But the battery capacity seems good - it is reporting about 53 watt hours, when it was only ~55 when it came out of the factory. I'm running Windows 10. Does anybody know what the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Satellite M70 with an battery which discharging from full to empty within 20 minutes.
Is there some program to clean the battery from his "memory" I know that such things exist for normal batterys but is it also possible for laptop batterys?

thanks wendy

Answer:Very fast battery discharging on Satellite M70

Don?t this that would functions?
The M70 is not a new notebook series and I presume your battery is working since a longer period of time.
So it?s not unusual that your battery loses the own performance after a long time of usage.
From my knowledge the after about 500 times of chagrin and discharging the battery starts to lose the own performance.

My battery is 6 year old and I can use it only for 2 min. Then it?s empty.
I know, the replacement would be necessary but my notebook is always connected to the main power and therefore I don?t need a new battery pack.

Well to cut this story here is my final statement; a battery replacement will solve your issue ;)

Hello, When on battery power, my X260's internal battery is discharging before the external battery. I am using Windows 10 Home and bios is 1.19 (what it came shipped with). I haven't found any definite solution to this problem--only comments from others where the problem went away eventually. I've had the computer for 10 days and have tried many suggestions but nothing is working--the internal battery continues to drain first before the external one. I'm hesitant to call or get support because I don't want to send the computer in or have a tech rip the computer apart for what is apparently a software/firmware issue. Just to add: all drivers are updated and battery performance is perfectly normal--I get the expected run times. It's just the internal battery is draining first and then the external one second. I would appreciate any other suggestions or a fix. Thanks

My new and virtually unsused laptop is discharging its battery at the rate of 10% in 48 hours when switched off and not in hibernation mode. When removing the battery it is loosing 2% in 48 hours.

I have fully charged the battery to 100% and shut down whilst still on charge.

There is no doubt in my mind that the battery is discharging when fitted, and only loosing a small amount of charge when removed from the laptop.

Have any other users experienced the same problem. Result is that in one week the battery will discharge some 35%, which I find unacceptable.

Answer:Satellite L500 19X Battery discharging when not in use

Hi

I think this is nothing wrong buddy
The battery will always s discharge a little bit even though the notebook is not running.

Take a look into the user manual.
I did it and found this:

When you turn off your computer with fully charged batteries, the batteries retain data for the following approximate time periods;

Battery pack 12 cell; 2 days (sleep mode); 20 days (Shut down mode)
Battery pack 6 cell; 1 day (sleep mode); 10 days (shut down mode)
Battery pack 3 cell; 0,5 days (sleep mode); 5 days (shut down mode)

You must always check following software/ bios settings in order to decreased the battery discharging:
- standby/ resume mode, hibernation etc. will reduce the time until the battery is empty dramatically
- always check wether Wake On Lan or Wake on HDMI is enabled
- always check wether USB sleep and charge is enabled

I recently bought an Equium M40X - 149, and i couldnt understand why when the ac adapter is plugged in the battery discharges itself and the computer switches off! I went into the bios but i couldnt find anything that i could change to stop this!! Can anyone point me in the right direction as it is inconvinient for me to keep taking the battery out when i want to use the laptop!!

Answer:Equium M40X -Battery discharging. Please help!

Hello Gemma

I don?t know if I have understood you right but if the notebook is connected to AC power supply it can not be possible that the unit switches off itself. Not because of power supply. If the unit is connected to AC power supply you can remove the battery and it should work without any problem.

Sorry but I have no explanation for this and in my opinion you should contact Authorized Toshiba service partner in your country. Explain them the problem and thay can check the unit. The warranty is valid and if there is some hardware malfunction the costs will be covered.

Hello,

I have a Satellite P850-12Z bought a few months ago (3 or 4).

I have noticed that if the battery is charged 100% and I switch off the computer for a couple of days, when I switch it back on the battery is nearly gone or completely gone if it takes me a while longer to restart it.

It seems quite strange to me because I have not seen something similar in any other computer I have had.

Can somebody tell me if this is normal or what could be the problem?

Thank you.

Answer:Battery discharging even if Satellite P850-12Z is OFF

Hi

This is OK and nothing unusual if some BIOS options are not disabled.
I assume the notebook supports the features like ?Wake Up on Lan? and ?USB Sleep & Charge?.
Both features requires power even if the unit is OFF.
So disable both (in BIOS) and check if it helps to avoid the battery discharging.

I am having problems with my A30-514. Even when the AC power supply is plugged in and the notetop seems to be running of AC power, the battery discharges itself and eventually the power level gets so low that the notebook shuts down.

It seems like the notebook is being controlled by the battery power not the AC power. I am currently using the notebook without the battery inserted - i.e. on AC only and it's absolutely fine.

I am no longer under warranty so please don't just suggest I go to a service partner !

Do I need a new battery ? Or is there a hardware defect ?

Many thanks.

Answer:On-line discharging of battery (A30-514 model)

Hi

Are you really sure that when the machine is running on both AC (DC actually) and the battery is inserted, it discharges the battery?
How can You tell? Do You monitor the power-level in the battery and can see it go down (just like when running on just battery)?
If so, I believe that it will not improve with a new battery. Normally on a Toshiba machine, even if the battery is in any way defective (exclusive pure short-cuircuts) the machine will work fine from the AC Adaptor, charging or just ignoring a defective battery.

This is an IBM Thinkpad I1400 series. The battery would not charge so I replaced it with a new one. It now charges but here are some observations that are suspect to me. Once the battery has been charged to !00% according the Power Meter, I shut down the system, disconnected the A/C power and looked at the Power Meter again. It registers about 98%. Within a 2 or 3 minutes, I shut it down again. After about 2 days, I again power up the system on battery only, check the Power Meter and it registers only 65%. Shouldn't these batteries hold their charge for much longer than this when not in use for just 2 days? Is there something else going on that might be discharging the battery? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Every time I turn my desktop computer on, the fan immediately starts running at 100% and won't stop. And, for example, I shut down the computer and went on a three day vacation and when I turned it back on it was immediately like this, so no, this is not a case of overheating.

I have to sit there a play with the computer - usually do several hard shutdowns (which is bad, I know) before I can restart it normally and have it not do that. When it starts up normally, it shuts down normally. When it starts up with the fan at 100%, even when I "shut down" the computer and all the lights go off, the fan still runs!I tried following the instructions on the last post of this page: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/A-M-and-Edge-Series-ThinkCentre/ThinkCentre-M58-Fan-speeds-constantly-10... but I can't even complete them because the back of my computer does not look like that diagram (do I have to remove the metal frame or something?).This is a work computer, we have no IT department, and I don't have all day to work out the problem since I have to, you know, work. Hi guys, I've purchased my Edge E535 notebook in December 2012. Since than, 3 times my battery has been discharged to 0% even when plugged in, and at that point the machine just shut down. Then I turned back on, and in the first 2 cases it has started to charge, but today not.In Power Manager (version 6.36) battery maintenance has been set to Maximize battery lifetime.Anybody has any clue what could cause the problem, it is pretty embarass ing

Answer:Power Manager/Battery discharging problem

Hey there Gajka and welcome to the forums!

When the battery is plugged into the machine, and you are in the Power Manager can you tell us if the machine recognizes the battery and the current health? This may give us some indication of what may be going on.

Additionally, If you could, I'd like you try doing a static discharge:

Unplug the power supply(AC Adapter)
Remove the battery
Disconnect any cords or express cards
Press the power button 10 times, and on the 10th press hold it for 30 seconds

Hi all,

I have an Inspiron 1525 that is one year old. Recently the battery will be completely dead when I try to turn on the laptop and will not power on unless I plug it in. The battery meter will be at 0% when it starts up, but recharges normally when plugged in. When I unplug the laptop and close the lid (which puts it into sleep mode) the battery will be completely dead by the next morning even if it was at 100% before I closed it. I don't know why the battery is discharging completely so quickly when the computer isn't even running.

Could this just be a problem with my battery? Or is the laptop not actually sleeping when I close it, but continually using up battery power? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:Laptop battery discharging when in sleep mode

Note there's a difference between "Sleep" vs. "Hibernation"
> Sleep mode still requires power (It should be minimal power but definitely still draws some power)
> Hibernation requires zero power

That said, i still wouldn't expect a good battery to discharge overnight on sleep mode so you probably still have an issue with your battery holding a charge

Hi,
My battery is playing games with me. I cannot charge it and use my laptop at the same time because it says 'Online, discharging' until eventually the battery is so low that I have to turn it off. I then have to unplug the AC, plug it back in again at which point it begins to charge until full.

The AC is only good for charging the battery, not for when the laptop is on. So basically I can only use the laptop for about 2 hours, then have to stop and wait another 3 or so until the battery is charged again. 'Online, discharging' just seems so illogical to me.

Any ideas anyone???
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Equium M70: Not possible to charge the battery - online discharging?!

This is a very strange problem I can only assume that the AC power supply is faulty and isn't delivering the full power thus the laptop resorts to battery power. If your laptop is still under warranty I would recommend you get your AC adapter and laptop checked out by Toshiba.

I have the Toshiba Satellite A305-S6825 and turned it on after not using it for about one week. I noticed the battery was listed as 60% full. Is that normal? I thought since I didn't use it, it would be about 95%.

By the way, I am in the USA, but can only see a UK Toshiba Forum. Isn't there a USA Toshiba Forum?

Thanks.

Answer:Satellite A305-S6825: Battery discharging

I think it is a normal behaviour, that after a certain amount of time, the battery loses a bit of his charge.
Observed this quite a while on my rechargable batteries at home, but not with notebook battery, as I nearly use my rig every day ;)

Don't know if there is an US Toshiba forum, haven't looked for that, I must admit.

About a month ago my battery would drop from 20% to 6% saying I needed to plug it in to recharge. I've done a few battery recalibrations and I'd get full use out of my battery but it only lasts for 2 or 3 charges. I just used a program named Battery Eater that drained my battery and displayed graphically what it looks like, I've attached it below. Can someone provide a solution other than me having to recalibrate my battery every time I want to get full use of my battery?

Answer:Ideapad 560 Sanyo Battery Discharging too fast

I'm having issues seeing your graphic below, but have you tried deep-discharging it a more classical way?

There are DOS tools to actually do a battery reset from Lenovo, though the disclaimer states it cannot be used on Ideapads (Strange that usage is "prohibited"): http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-56222

My recommendation is boot from a live CD to an environment that has no power management when you're down to 20% or so. Let the battery trickle away until the system hard shuts off. Then charge the machine while powered off until your system reaches 100% charge.

Recently I've been having problems with the battery discharging while plugged in while playing some games (Civilization V and Sniper Elite V2 are the ones I've noticed the most). In the case of Civilization V, it also causes the game to lag to the point of being unplayable. The battery notification when scrolled over says "plugged in, not charging" and does so indefinitely until the computer shuts off from lack of power. It also decreases the battery life to just about an hour and fifteen minutes when discharging like this. Any help would be appreciated with this, because it doesn't seem to happen with every single game I own. Sims 3, Saint's Row the Third, Skyrim, etc. do not suffer from this problem. I've already tried uninstalling the games with this problem and reinstalling them, but that doesn't seem to help. Thanks!

Hi,

I hope someone can help me!
I have a Toshiba Satellite A30. It has recently started discharging the battery while it is connected to, and running off, the mains. So the screen icon shows AC power (full power mode) but the % for the battery drops by approx 5% per minute.

The battery light on the laptop is off. If I shut down pc, the light will go orange, to charge. When I reboot, it stays orange for a short time, then goes off again.

Is this a problem with the battery, or the charging lead, or something else? Please help, this is driving me mad, as I keep having to turn it off to recharge it!

Many thanks

Answer:Satellite A30 - battery discharging when connected to mains

In my opinion battery is responsible for this. Satellite A30 is pretty old notebook model so I can imagine the battery is not the best anymore.
Remove the battery and check the battery sticker. There you will find exact part number. using this part number you can order new battery for your Satellite notebook.

My T400 hasnt been charging for quite awhile now. According to my computer there's no AC adapter plugged in at all and it's been running off battery for the last month or two, which obviously isnt exactly correct. Especially since at one point I took my battery out while it was plugged in and it was fine, but wouldnt boot up without the battery in. I got my battery and AC adapter tested at Batteries Plus and they said the battery was good and that the AC adapter's voltage was jumping around a bit, which I found out is supposedly normal? I didnt know that at the time though, so I bought a cheap AC adpater off ebay that was compatible. Didnt fix anything either. So, I'm guessing it's probably the main board or a loose lead to the power cord input. When I plug in the AC adapter the plug at the computer is pretty loose, and may not be all the way in.. I can see a strip of silver where the plug isnt flush with the computer, is that normal? A month or two some water got spilled around the laptop, so there could possibly be some corrosion or something on the leads of the main board. Is there anything I can do to clean it up, if so? Also, will the Mini-dock still work for my laptop if the mainboard isnt charging the battery? Is it worth it to replace the main board on a T400, I'm guessing it'll be pretty expensive? I'm thinking about going to the MSU Computer service center and paying $40 for a quote.. Thanks!

Answer:T400 Battery slowly discharging while plugged in

The strip of silver (assuming you're talking about the metal tube part) is fine, and the wiggle (if not excessive) is normal. The water spill is a bit more dubious though... Might want to take off the keyboard and check for signs of corrosion.

Answer:Ideapad S510p touch - Battery discharging too fast

hi Bhan168,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

To check the battery, can you try and run following:
1. Download and install BatteryCare and post the detailed info on the battery.
   - Sample info

2. Open an elevated Command Prompt (press the Windows key? +X and choose Command Prompt (Admin))
   - on the command prompt box, type powercfg -energy
   - once It generates the energy-report.html file, move this to your desktop and double click it. It will help if you can post a screenshot of the report or upload it (eg. Dropbox) so we can check if there's an app or a driver running on the background that's eating up power and making the battery drain much faster.

I just bought a manufacturer refurbished Lenovo Ideapad U430p. The description said the only problems were tiny scratches, they never mentioned the laptop would have charging problems. I have tried everything, from changing enenrgy management to shutting down the laptop and charging it that way, but I keep getting the same result, the slow blinking orange light on the side of my laptop, indicating that the laptop is charging but battery power is being discharged, making it really hard to actually charge the laptop. I plugged it in straight out of the box and it immediatley stopped charging at 5%. Thats it. Then I used it a little bit and I guess I did something because then it dropped to 4% and now I am completley hopeless because school is about to start up again and I'm not going to have a laptop. Please help! And I really don't want to have to send this laptop back so please try and think of somethings else! Also it is an internal battery. Thank you,Cavrae1 P.S. Everything says the laptop is charging. The battery meter on the bottom right hand cornor of the screen, and the energy management says charging so it's not the common charger plugged in not charging issue.

Initially my device was working just fine. Of late though (I don't know exactly when) I've noticed that only the internal battery discharges - then takes me to low power, plug in your charger, without discharging the external battery. I've installed all the latest updates for drivers and BIOS. With the laptop plugged in, the external battery is charging. But when I disconnect the AC it tells me the internal battery is 'in use' and gives me an estimated battery life based only on the single internal battery.

Hi everyone,

I have a brand new Satellite A100 and I noticed that when I fully charge it and then turn it off and take the plug out of the socket, the next day when I stick it back into the socket the amber light says that it is charging.

So I turned on the Laptop and checked how full the battery is and it says 94%. I let it finish charging to 100% and then turned it off again and took out the plug from the socket. The same thing happened the next day! It had discharged again!

I'm sure I didn't put it in Hibernate mode because I checked all the settings and selected Turn Off to shut down the Laptop.

I've read about the battery recall so I looked it up on the toshiba site and downloaded the battery testing program. The result came out that my battery is not among the affected serial numbers. I even manually checked the number on their list but mine is not supposed to be affected.

Is anyone having the same problems or is it normal that the battery discharges by itself?

Please let me know.. Thanks :)

Recently, my Spectre X360 seemed to be completely flat every time I went to use it. This is despite being turned off (not in sleep mode or any other lazy-shutdown mode). I've had this lappy for probably two years now, but use it only occasionaly, like say, once every two months. With that infrequent use, I do expect some discharge over that time and it usually had some charge left in it as far back as I can remember. Nevertheless, of late, I've been using the lappy a bit more frequently and have noticed it was completely flat after leaving it for just a week or less. So I searched for an answer on this forum and found a couple of threads that went on for pages with "me too" posts and useless cut-and-paste answers from techs (mostly offering software "solutions") which I knew were not relevant. Eventually I found a couple of clues burried deep in the threads that made sense.  They were the 5v USB charging while turned off along with having any USB devices left attached (someone mentioned mouse dongles). Immediatly, I realised that my recently purchased 128Gb Sandisk nub drive, which I have left attached, may have been a contributor. Subsequently, I;1. Now remove the nub drive when the machine is not in use (despit it being designed to be left in all the time).2. Ensured I had the latest BIOS (F.43) - The other threads talk about an F.10 BIOS version. Whatever.3. Disabled the power to the USB ports when the lappy is switched off by setting it in th... Hi all,

My Toshiba Satellite A30-871 notebook has started discharging the battery whilst the mains power supply is connected (The LED shows that AC is connected but Laptop consumes battery power instead of charging battery and using AC power). Hi everyone, Received my T440s yesterday and currently trying to understand exactly how the power bridge technology etc. is working. I noticed the internal battery is first charged up to 80%, then the rear battery is charged and then the internal battery is fully charged. But when it comes to discharging, I was hoping the system would prevent the rear / replaceable battery from fully discharging, doing something like discharging until 20% left, then switching to internal one and then back to the replaceable one when the internal one goes above 20% or something but that's not what it's doing... So my question is : It is known that Li-ion batteries should not be used under 20% unless you want to quickly have to replace it, how does the Power Bridge technology deals with that? The rear battery being discharged completely will clearly reduce it longevity. And, well, even if it's "replaceable", I am not willing to replace it after only 12 months only because it was used inappropriately.... If any Lenovo Eng' knows the answer... Thanks in advance.

Answer:T440s Preventing rear / replaceable battery from completely discharging?

The short answer is that the battery firmware prevents discharging to the point where your battery will become damaged.  So when the battery firmware reports 0% charge remaining, it is not really 0%.

After my friend's laptop wouldn't run on battery power OR charge the battery I tried many "fixes."

Shockingly none worked that I found.

Only one thing worked for me to my surprise.

A last ditch effort was to open up the laptop (sony pcg-81114L) and disconnect the cmos battery for a few minutes to reset the CMOS.

To my surprise, when powered on, the battery instantly showed it was charging AND when removing the power plug the battery POWERS the laptop now! (and I'd thought I was wasting my time.)

Worked with an off brand battery also.

Many times this has saved many computers that have odd "unsolvable" things wrong with them.

Surely someone else has done this also but I haven't seen it posted anywhere to my knowledge.

Thank GOD for bringing the idea to remembrance!

My Toshiba Satellite M35x will, while it's plugged in, just start discharging and beeping.
It's always done this periodically, like every couple of months or so. But the last few days the computer has been unuseable.

While it IS plugged in, it'll start beeping and I'll see a screen like this:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1060/1191838676_86e9047a5a_o.jpg
Then the computer will die and I can't restart it for about an hour.
This happens while it is plugged in!

The screen even says "current power source, ac power".
What is going on? I can't get anything done.
It's beeping again and discharging again as I type this.

Any help'd be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Answer:Satellite M35x: While AC adaptor is plugged the battery start discharging and beeping

Hi there,

I cannot say if the problem is really software related, in this case you are on your own. So you will have to try the following:

Backup all data and recover the machine to check if the problem appears after reinstalling the whole system.
But don?t install something else except the recovery, thats the most important thing.

The other solution would be to contact a local servicepartner for a hardware checkup. They will see if your machine has some serious hardware malfunctions, so they exchange defective parts in case of hardware problems.

Here?s a link to find service partner/servicecenter:

It's possible after the move the battery is not entirely seated.I'd replace it anyways....part # CR 2032 available at any PC shop.Make sure all power is removed and take anti static precautions whenever working inside the case.

Hello everyone,
I have been having a problem with my laptop recently. A few weeks ago my laptop turned off, and wouldn't turn back on. I did some googling, and found suggestions to remove the memory, SSD, and CMOS battery, wait, then put them  back in and try again. When I did that, it didn't work the first few power button presses, but then it turned on. It has been consistent like that. I have the battery out, and on AC only, when I remove AC and CMOS battery, then plug the AC back in, the laptop will boot after hitting the power button a few times.

Any suggestions?

I have just replaced my CMOS/BIOS battery today, as , I have faced some critical problem regarding regular BIOS date/time reset after system shutdown. But I want to know how do i recognize, that my new batter is totally ok or functional.

Battery Meter gadget shows that "battery Not charging"
Is it a gadget problem?

Is there any method available so that I can track that my new installed CMOS battery in PC is working fine?

Please help me.

Answer:Battery Meter shows CMOS battery not charging

The battery you have replaced is solely there to maintain the clock and other BIOS settings (if you have changed them from their defaults). It will not prevent you from booting your system if it is dead/missing; all it means is that you will have to enter the BIOS each time and make the correct settings and time. This battery is not rechargeable.

Do you still have to enter the correct time, or is the BIOS maintaining this now you've changed the battery?

Been working fine until a few days ago. When I turn it on it says 163 - Time and Date not set - There is no option in bios to set date Non-System disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready - Bios cannot detect hard drive So the question is if the RTC Battery is weak or dead can it cause above issues Thanks Chris

Answer:Question about RTC Battery (CMOS Battery) and System Errors

CWILLIAM83 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! The answer is actually -- yes and no. A weak or dead CMOS battery will prevent the BIOS settings from being saved when you power off the PC. If the default settings work OK with your hardware, then the only thing you would notice is that the clock resets. But, if you customized your settings to see the hard drive, then the default settings might not see it. After you replace the battery, you would have to go through configuring the settings-- again.Good Luck

Question: Cmos Battery

Hi,
I have a ASUS motherboard. When my Pc star to bootup,I have a line in the end that tall me that the Cmos Batt is lower and the date and time is not accurate or something like that. What kind the battery is this one and what do I have to do to change?

Thanks

Joaquin.

Answer:Cmos Battery

The most commonly used battery is CR2032. If you still have the P4S800-MX motherboard (from a May post), turn off your PC and remove the left side cover. The battery is a 5 cent coin size disk near your IDE drive connectors.

You can get the battery about anywhere (I saw them at the grocery store last week).

Question: CMOS Battery

Hi guys and gals, quick question. I have a HP Pavilion G7 laptop that was giving me some cmos error messages so after some ridiculously rigorous searching, I found the battery. My question is, does the numbers on the battery mean anything? Meaning, ive found HP pavilion Gy batteries on line for sale but the numbers on the sticker on the rubber housing dont seem to match. Im wondering if that is just the warehouses part ID. This one says, "1126. 12." If anyone is familiar with these please let me know. Thanks

Bob

Answer:CMOS battery

unplug the PC, even the power cord at the back
ground yourself (ie touch metal, discharge static)
open the case and point a flashlight at it
carefully pry it out, usually a clip you GENTLY pull back to allow the battery to pop out
(you do NOT want to break the clip off)

any radio shack or pc store will have them

about $5

What caused you to change the battery? Did you touch anything else while in there? Is it in securely and correctly? If not careful there is a 50% probability that it is in upside down.

Question: No CMOS battery

Took my Vista offline Christmas week to mess around with 8.1 computer. Decided this morning I'd had enough of 8.1 for awhile so I was switching all the power and cables back over and wouldn't you know -Vista wouldn't boot! Did the regular stuff. Unplug things one at a time. All it would do was flash the power lite for 1 second then nothing. It's dusty but it was this dusty last week? Unplugged extra drives, then unplugged main drive, disconnected the monitor, took out the ram, pulled the plug on fans, usb - everything. Resetted the main board power. You name it. I tried it. Well last straw - I pulled the CMOS battery out with everything now back in or so I thought. For some curious reason I push the power botton an guess what- It Powered Up! Turned it off connected the video to see if it would tell me to fix cmos or something but no. It screened - "The System fan has failed. Fix to prevent damage to your computer. Press F2 to continue." So I continue and here I am running with the cmos battery sitting in front of me on my desk! And one fan is still disconnected so it caught my error of not plugging everything back. I have the same battery for my multimeter in my work truck so no big deal. But I never knew you could boot without the battery. A new troubleshooting step I'll remember for sure!

Answer:No CMOS battery

CMOS is to keep configurations if computer is unplugged and to keep the clock up to date.
As you discovered, if a desktop computer is plugged in or a laptop is running off a battery, it doesn't require a CMOS battery to power up.

Question: CMOS Battery

It's time to change the battery (first time for a machine I bought in 2004 - not a bad run). I can't get the old one out....any suggestions?

Answer:CMOS Battery

On side should have a metal contact.
You need to carefully pry it toward that contact as it is spring loaded,
then lift from the other side.
Should pop right out.
Be careful you don't want to break the socket.
Some older cmos batteries were soldered on,but I haven't
seen that since around 2000.

Question: CMOS battery low?

I have a pc that gives a warning the cmos battery is low. But after looking at event viewer, it has been doing this for about 5 months. It is keeping time but everytime you reboot the date and time goes back to April 11. 2007 12:00am. I was about to replace the battery when I stopped and realized it was running vista and not old enough really for the battery to go bad. Do you think this is more of a virus issue?

Answer:CMOS battery low?

everytime you reboot the date and time goes back to April 11. 2007 12:00am.Click to expand...

The symptoms sure appear like a CMOS battery problem. For under $5, I'd just replace the battery and save myself the hassle of constantly resetting the date and time.

Normally it's OK to "1 out, 1 in".Download Everest Free, possibly from here: click hereWhen you run it, it will tell you make/model/series etc of your mobo. Then just go to the manufacturers site and read the manual with regard to changing the CMOS battery.

Question: Cmos Battery??

I do not see a Cmos battery obviously its there somewhere, If it doesn't look like a large watch battery what else does it look like, I see nothing that can be popped off and replaced.

Answer:Cmos Battery??

Some older motherboards had a barrel shaped, blue backup battery soldered to the motherboard. That was common with 486 systems. In order to replace it, you were required to attach an external battery to a specific connector on the motherboard and set a jumper (maybe) to disable the original battery.
Another possibility is a CMOS ram chip with the battery built into it. Those usually were a large black chip plugged into a socket on the motherboard with "DALLAS SEMICONDUCTOR" printed on it.

Is there a default in set up after replacing the cmos battery or should you take a picture with the flash off just in case?

Peter

Answer:cmos battery

Replacing the CMOS battery will probably reset the BIOS settings to their defaults. Unless you or someone else has changed the settings, that will be the same as what you have now.

You could use a camera (or smartphone) with the flash turned off to record the settings. Or, you could just use pencil and paper. (Dell typically provides a fairly limited selection of settings. That's not intended as criticism.)
