I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Hard Drive + Cables 250Gb Continued

You need to go to right click on My Computer and choose 'Manage' then Disk management. You will see the drive in the list. Right click on the left hand box and choose 'initialize'. When this is done right click on the right hand side and choose 'New partition'. When you have done this right click again and choose 'Format'

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

'was going to insert the first disk. but then it got too late to do anything. I pressed the esc key and the system started up normally. my western digital back was scheduled to run auto back up. so I let it do that.

I used flash drives and started to save as much as I could thru the flash drives. was still at it till about 3:30 am and then shut down the system 'normally.'

update with questions:
1.) I turned on pc again about a week later, nothing, back to the original black screen. Tried all the steps again. this time a no go.

2.) since it has been awhile life got in the way. I had managed to get probably a good portion but not all out of the xp. today gave it one more try and the monitor was showing some weird stuff that kinda looked like binary coding flashing up and down the screen but went so fast really could not tell. got to the part where you can enter for safe mode or normal etc. either one goes back to black screen...
don't know what is happening with it.

Here's a question. since I did manage to get some stuff saved to my external western digital hard drive (which obviously is an old back up drive) compared to now.

i recently bought an internal seagate 250gb hard drive and when i installed it it is only finding 232gb i was wondering how i can access the other 18gbs if that is possible. i have seen the 137gb barrier but not something like this. all help would be appreciated.

Answer:250gb hard drive not full 250

its the way that windows reports space compared to the hdd manufactures. the hd manufactures report a meg as 1000 KB, while windows reports it as 1024 KB. no over a large amount of storage (say 80gb) the number will shrink, but the space is still there (will be reported as 74.5GB in windows). so what you have is normal.

Hi beautiful people,

Currently im using a 60gb partition for windows 7 32 bits ultimate in a SATA HD (AIHC mode), i've been told in the past that it is not recommended to use the entire HD as one partition cause slows the system (the needle works more), is that still true?

Answer:Windows 7 in a 250GB Hard Drive

To a certain extent yes, It is better to have one partition in the top of your drive to hold your system files (programs, drivers, etc) and another partition to hold your data. This will help your system run faster.

However, you cannot just rely on this alone. You should do regular disk cleanup using a program like CCleaner (don't use the registry cleaner option) and defragment your hard drive regularly as well.

Hello, We have a customer who has an R40 that we replaced the drive with at their request for more drive space. The biggest drive we could go with was a 250GB drive. Since we installed the drive, the R40 has found it way back to the shop a couple times for a bad hard drive. We use only NEW drives. The drives have been WD 250 ide notebook drives. The original drive was a 40GB in size. In talking with a colleague form another shop, he suggested that the power supply and battery could play some role in this problem. The laptop battery does not hold a charge. The OS is XP Pro with SP2, the computer does see the entire 250GB when installed, this is seen in My Computer and in the BIOS. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what might be causing the larger drives to not last in the R40. The R40 isa Type 2723-LU2. I would appreciate any advice in troubleshooting this. It could be time for her to move to a new laptop. Thanks, Peter

Answer:R40 on it's third 250GB hard drive in four months

well i don't think the R40 has the shock protection system that came in the later T and R series. This means if the laptop experience constant shocks of some magnitude, this may cause faults to develop in the larger hdd, as the fault tolerance level of these new drives are slightly less than the smaller capacity drives. Usually bad sectors or other mechanical faults may develop, if the the drive head routinely crashes into the platter.

Hi all, hopefully someone can help?Approx 2 years ago i bought a Medion portable hard drive from my local Aldi. Everything has been fine until today when the connection seems loose. If i connect the hard drive to the cable and plug it into my laptop the hard drive turns on, but the laptop doesn't recognise it, and says its malfunctioned. How do i go about fixing it if at all, and have i lost everything on my portable hard drive. Many thanks,Chris

Answer:Medion 250gb Hard Drive

You could probably disconnect the drive and use it in another external caddy. Before buying another caddy you need to know whether the drive is a SATA or PATA (IDE) probably a SATA if only two years old.

I attempted to add a 250 GB hard drive to my PC, 3.0 Ghz, GA-8S648FX MB with 1 Gig DDR Ram. When I boot my PC and go into the bios, it sees the PC, however when the PC boots it doesn't show it in control panel or in "My Computer". I am running Windows XP Pro 2nd Edition and am frustrated. I have the most current bios for my motherboard and Gigabyte says it should be no problem on their end. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried both setting drives as Cable Select and also Master/Slave. I have tried setting it up with the original Windows XP Pro disk but it only sees 137MB. Any ideas? I got a real good deal so I bought 2 of these 250 GB drives for my PCs, too bad they can't see the. BTW, both PCs are the same motherboard only difference is that one of the PCs is a 2.8 Ghz CPU (INTEL). Thanks

Answer:PC won't format 250GB hard drive

Try going to the drive manufacturers website and download their tools and use this to format. There is an issue with drives above 137mb but I thought this was solved with XP.

Hello guys.. newbie here.. just want to seek help regarding HARD Drive replacement , for some reason my laptop wont boot upit only does lights (LED) but will not continue to boot or show the logo/ BIOS so we suspected probably HArdisk problem - in that sense we decided just to BUY a new hard drive and replace the existing 160GB with a 250GB.. Now im not sure if this is compatible enough with the MoBO..and the bios..MODEL : LENOVO 3000 G430 just bought it 4months ago here in Hong Kong.. Advice & tips is appreciated. http://www.vatgia.com/pictures_fullsize/tut1254386189.jpg

Answer:is it ok to put a 250GB Hard drive replacement?

You probably can't update the bios in the machine's current condition and if it's only 4 months old that's probaly unwarranted.Check the size to make sure it slot 1, 2 or 3 ( Different thickness) and bring the old HD with you to the store. Also check to see if the HD is IDE, SATA or PATA. It should say on the HD. If not then check out the spec sheets for your machine. Didn't save them? Try doing a search on here. Good luck with that though, I've seen rubber duckies drown with the level of support that Lenovo offers.Ensure that you have the recovery disks or make them any way you can.Good luck to ya bro.

Hi everyone,I'm not sure whether this belongs here or not, I apologize in advance if it's the latter.I have been fiddling around with my computer lately, so I don't know if any of what I'd done had directly caused my current problem or not. I'll include the problems that preluded my current disaster below and hope it helps with resolving my issue. Please bear with me. Edit: I'm using Windows XP.BackgroundOn and off in the past ~three months, my computer has had occasionally one or two viruses detected ("trojan horse" I belive?) and (hopefully) fixed by Avast. In more recent times (the past ~five to three days), I have started catching up on Microsoft Window Updates. I believe I installed SP3 amongst other things? (Or maybe it was just SP3 related stuff......). I also installed "Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005". - this was when my first problem started: Shortly after the updates, I found that when ver I turn on my computer, an error window pops up with the message: "C:\WINDOWS\ehome\medctrro.exe - Windows can't access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I tried scouring the internet for solutions, but only came up with the knowledge that it was somehow related to the Media Center. And although the message was annoying, I thought it wasn't too bad, at least my computer was still running after ... Read more

Hi there, I've got a 250gb maxtor HD and it can't be detected in bios or something is wrong. WHENEVER its connected (either on its own or with another drive), it says "error loading OS".
(PC boots fine with my other Maxtor 120gb HD)

On some sites it says to set Bios HD Access to LARGE instead of auto/lba etc

BUT - my bios doesnt show me such a setting when i go into HD config screen. I know what screen it should be on, but believe me, there is no "large" option for HD access.

Motherboard = MSI MS-6567

Can someone pls help me?? Thanks so much

Dom

Answer:BIOS won't recognise 250gb Hard Drive

Well, error loading OS only shows that it can't load an OS. Do you have an OS on that drive?
At bootup, your BIOS should list the drives it detects. Do you see the Maxtor in the list (next to the optical drive)?

That's a rather old motherboard. It could be that it simply does not support hard drives larger than ~130GB. And I can't see a BIOS update that would fix it either.. You can try updating to the latest BIOS and hope that it fixes the problem of course.

I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.

After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.

I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.

I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this????????????

Answer:250gb Hard drive shows as 125gb

When you partitioned and formatted the drive, it didn't have any service packs, so it limited the format to what you see. If you go into Disk Management, you'll find that you now have about half the drive listed as "Unallocated". You can create a partition on this section and format it, then it will be available for use as a new drive letter.

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didnít recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldnít work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldnít).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I havenít given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether itís fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,
I have been helping neighbour with their Lenovo-b50-80. It originally came with Windows 8.1 and I have upgraded it to Windows 10 and after a few hiccups is working perfectly.
The next stage of upgrading this laptop is to clone the 500GB original drive to a 250GB Samsung SSD using Aomei Backupper Standard 3.2 and Aomei Partition Assistant 6.0

When I go to Disk Management I find that the disk has 6 partitions. Most of which are probably linked to recovering the OS back to Win 8.1
I would like to get rid of all unessential disk space and so I thought I would ask for your suggestions.
At this moment all the files including Windows.old are located on the C: drive.
Many thanks,
s.

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

Ok, I just built my own custom computer with a little from my friends. And we got it all running and working now, however Windows XP Pro is only detecting the 250GB as 130GB, and this is even when we "formated," and partitioned with Windows XP Pro.

Its not the Hard drive, because we built 2 of the exact same (1 for me and 1 for my bro) however its happening on both machines.

Any help, without wipping the currect data on them? (We've already transfered the data from our laptops to the new computers with our 5pc network)

I'm trying to upgrade from the 30GB Toshiba harddrive that came with the unit to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB EIDE drive.
I take the swap the 30GB out for the 250GB put in a bootable version of XP SP3 CD-ROM and nothing - no sign that any power is getting to the drive.
The CDROM tries to write boot files to the hard drive but nothing happens.

Same thing happens when I try to use the 3cd pack from Toshiba or the recovery CD from Norton Ghost.
The computer is not seeing the drive. Put the old 30GB drive in and it boots up right away.

My BIOS settings show it to be set up for EIDE and to boot from the CDROM. What steps am I missing?

Answer:Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

Hi

It looks like the BIOS does not recognize the new HDD? I assume it?s too large?
The Satellite 2410 series is old and I assume it will not support bigger HDD?s than 120GB due to the 28bit LBA

So try with smaller HDD like 80GB or 100GB.

I recently upgrade my PC, and have installed a NEW 250 GB S-ATA Hard drive.
My bios has been upgraded, and when in the BIOS setup it recognizes the drive as what it should be, 250GB, When I was installing XP and creation a partition thru the intall progam it only let me setup a 131GB partition. I set up a 100GB partition and left the rest to play with afterwards. In the Computer management/disk manager in XP I have my 100GB partition and only 30GB of unallocated space to work with.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

Shamus

Answer:250GB Hard drive, Windows only allows 131GB partitionable

Since this was a fresh install you need to add SP2. XP came out with a 137G limitation which was addressed with SP1. SP2 has replaced SP1.

If you only want a single 250G partition there are a couple of ways to address it.

1) Install SP2 and then run Partition Magic to resize the primary partition to pick up the extra 150G.

or
2) Slipstream SP2 into your copy of XP and then start over from scratch with a fresh install.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? Hi,

I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here: http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/specs.asp?ID=1971

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE
Physical Dimensions (H x W x D): 1" x 5.78" x 4"

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8004679&type=product&id=1155848396138

Thanks so much,
James

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

Hi there,

My Sister owns a ASUS laptop running Windows Vista and has a portable hard drive (WD 250GB) which she uses to back up her files and to store her business files and personal files (music, photos, videos etc.) however, i plugged it into my MacBook to transfer files onto it. I am able to double click the text, but a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it." But i do not want to format the hard drive because the files on it aren't backed up. I've tried plugging it back into my MacBook, but that doesn't recognise it either.

Any help would be fantastic!

Thanks

Answer:WD 250GB Portable Hard Drive requesting format

you may need to rename it as for example in her comp that may have been E drive and in mac F drive so drives have gotten mixed up
try vista disc management if you can see it there change drive letter, or try in safe mode, ie connect drive with comp off then re boot into safe mode

Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

I'd like to get a 250GB SSD in my T450s when I order it, but Lenovo is charging $280 for the upgrade. So I'm thinking to order a T450s with a conventional 500GB spinning hard drive and buy a Crucial 256GB SSD elsewhere for $105. I would save $175 plus have a 500GB hard drive which I could erase and format and put into an external enclosure and use for other stuff. My question is -- I'm going to order the T450s with the Windows 7 Professional installation, so can I easily swap out the 500GB hard drive for the Crucial 256GB SSD (I'm ordering from elsewhere), and reinstall/recover Windows 7 Pro from recovery discs? I'm assuming that recovery discs are included or can be downloaded. Or, could I restore to the Crucial 256GB SSD from the recovery partition on the 500GB hard drive? How would I do this?

Answer:Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

Download and install Macrium Reflect.  There's a free version that makes clones.  Clone the factory drive to the SSD, then swap it out.  You don't get recovery disks.   The recovery software, though, has the option of creating a recovery disk set from the recovery partition that is installed on the drive.  So, you could burn the disks and put them away as your recovery solution.  When you clone the factory drive, you have the option of selecting which partions to include on the cloned drive.  If you've burned the disks first, you can simply not select the recovery partition (which is typically lettered "Q") and just clone the system reserved and Windows partitions and save yourself the disk space on the SSD. Once you've got it set up to your satisfaction, and you have the disks, then format the factory drive to use for your other purposes.

I played with the jumper settings and such, nothin'. Put it in a few other computers, nothin'.

I was just curious, is it something that can be fixed or should I lay it on my desk to hold down some papers?

The Acer C: drive is now full and the Data D: drive is empty, but it is not recognizing it automatically. This computer is my brother's, he bought it new and has it at my house. It came formatted with no disc's and I'm not sure where his books for it are. Can anyone tell me how to activate the second hard drive so I can use itunes and download video, etc.

It would be very much appreciated. My brother uses the computer here but it has been here for at least 3 years maybe and the book is misplaced. He mostly uses it for youtube, facebook, and stuff like that and is less computer educated than I am at tech stuff, which isn't saying much.

Boot into Bios, usually by hitting F8 as soon as the POST screen appears and see if the hard drives are both recognised. If the spare drive does not show in the Bios it either has a fault or it is not correctly connected.

Answer:Hard drive and optical drive only work when IDE cables are disconnected

hi

check that the cables are plugged in the right way round, the red stripe on the cable goes next to the power socket on the device and the board is usually marked pin 1 or has a dot on it.

does it happen when you plug in a single device or only when you plug in both.

are you using seperate cables or are you putting both devices on the same cable.

I want to connect it to my laptops eSATA port, I know I need a SATA to eSATA cable for that but what about the port on the left? What cable do I use for that?

Answer:Hard Drive Cables

What you have there (for the picture on the left) Is a sata port which consists of two connections. the smaller connection for the Data, the larger connection for the Power. If you were to connect this Hard Drive to your laptop with eSATA, you would need a converter that converts the sata connection to eSATA. (That is all you need, no extra software required.)

Question: Hard Drive Cables

Hello,I'm using Win7, intel i5, asus motherboardThis morning I tried to boot my PC and I got an error message; "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"I have 2 HDs. I disconnected the SATA cables from both drives, but left the cables connected to the motherboard. I then then reconnected my OS HD with the storage HD's cable. I am wondering if if the BIOS registers cable swaps like that?

Answer:Hard Drive Cables

The answer to your question has to be qualified. Some companies, like HP, will detect any change and  report it ti the user for confirmation. But many other PCs will not report the change. Also, there can be other issues.  Such as:A failing hard driveA failing power supplyA failing firmware chipSomething elseBut don't give up. It may be that just swapping the drive cables will fix the problem. Sometimes it is just that easy. No harm in trying, the cables are identical.

Ok. I recentley had two hard drives working. I took my "Storage" hard drive out so I could install windows on another one because the other computer wouldnt boot from the CD. Anyways, when I try to put my "Storage" Hard drive back on it doesnt seem to work. Sometimes it gives me weird characters in it reads the drives on startup and other times it wont start.

Could this possibly be bad IDE cables? Right now im running my main hard drive off of my slave.

Thanks.

Answer:Help - Hard Drive and IDE cables!

Could be....but most likely it is the placement.
Can you give me a description of how the drives are connected to the IDE controllers?
There should be labels on your motherboard for "IDE1" and "IDE2". Also, give us a layout of which drives are on which portion of the IDE cable.

ok here is my problem. My hard drive will work with bios saying it is set up as the thing below the master on the bios. But i have 2 cd drives and when i hook up my cd burner it doesn't say the hard drive is there. I need to no how to hook all the cables up in the computer. If anyone knows where i can find pictures and diagrams that would be great. The hard drive has to be set under master (i think) so the burner will work.

Thanks Alot

Answer:How to hook Hard Drive up to Cables

You want to the hard drive with the OS on as master, only the first IDE cable for it to work properly.

The cd drives doesn't need to be set in any order.

I would put the Harddrive on the first IDE cable, with it on master, with nothing else on it. The 2 cd burners on the other cable.

I bought a hard drive off of Amazon to boost how much data I can have on my computer, and I didn't realize it was SATA. I only have IDE cables. Regardless, I spotted something that looks like some type of SATA (I don't know whether it is power or data), but having only seen pictures in online "How to install internal hard drive" tutorials, I wasn't sure. What I need is for someone to tell me whether what I found is used for data with SATA or power with SATA (if either), and basically, what I need to make the SATA hard drive work with my computer. I have a 3-type IBE cable, so it has an extra 40 pin thingy, and I was told such a thing as a IDE to SATA converter existed. I don't even know which is for power and which is for data. Could someone please explain that? Thank you. Sorry for being so lost (I only know what the cables are due to a little independent research).

I have an older Dell PC, and I ran into a roadblock while trying to add a second SATA2 hard drive. The problem is with the available power cables. Its my understanding that the drives need to be hooked up in series in addition to setting the pins on the slave drive in order for them to function correctly. Is this right? The one spare power cable I have with series connectors is too short to reach the bottom of the case where the drives are (its actually designed for 2 CD/DVD roms and a floppy drive, but I'm sure it would work if it could reach!) I spent a while going through newegg.ca's inventory and unfortunately I can only find Y-cord splitters which would put the drives in parallel, not series. Would anyone be able to help me find what I need? Secondly, I was wondering what the difference between the 5 and 4 wire power cables. My system has 5 wire cables (red, orange, black, black, white) while all of the ones I see on newegg are four wire cables. Are they interchangeable, or would I need a converter? Any help or clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:2nd hard drive & power cables

SATA drives have no slave or master designation, and no need to set jumpers.
For power, you need a Molex/SATA adapter like this one:
http://www.satacables.com/html/molex-to-sata-power-15-pin-ada.html
Don't worry about Parallel/Series.

My PC recently decided to stop booting after the POST screen so I stripped out all of the components out of it so all that was left connected were the CPU and the power supply. I turned it on, and it beeped a few times asking for memory which was fine, so i added the memory, turned it on again and it beeped once, everything fine.

Then I added my graphics card, again it beeped once saying everything is fine and it posts ok asking for a hard drive but when I try adding the hard drive which is an IDE drive with an IDE slot on the motherboard (its a older type of board) and start it, it beeps constantly, fast constant beeps and hangs on the detection of a hard drive after it posts and sometimes even the cpu fan stops spinning (to which i turn it off immediately). It does this even if I have just the ide ribbon cable just attached to the motherboards ide slot without the hard drive connected to it, and it also does this on the secondary ide slot i have on my motherboard. When I remove the cable the beeping stops. I dont think it could be a problem with the power supply as I have tried the power supply in another machine I have (which is a lot slower ) and it works fine.

Is my motherboard dead or is there a way to fix this?
Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8I865GME-775-RH

Thanks in advance

I'm working on a friends OLDER pc.. P133, 48mb,1.2gb, WIN95. I suspected memory failure because of several BSOD screens. Using memtest86, it was confirmed. I pulled 2 of 4 memory chips out. I powered up pc, without re-connecting the 2 cables (duh), and of course wouldn't boot. so I powered down, re-connected cables, and now system will not recognize hard drive. The bios will not auto-detect, and even if I enter User-defined values for hard drive, it still will not detect. I changed to new cables, still nothing. When I boot up, system tells me HARD DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. Inserting Startup diskette, I get msg "no drives found, aborting installation", then goes back to A:. I have been on the phone 6 times and chats 4 times trying to get the nimrods at customer service to identify and sell me SATA cables for a second hard drive I purchased for my brand new 3668. I bought a 1TB 2.5 inch Seagate drive and it came without cables or mounting hardware.  NO ONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO HELP ME!!  This is easy s*** my friends.  Two bloody cables.  One for power and the other data.  I have talked to Customer Care, Sales, Technical Support and they keep bouncing me around.
Does anyone have a phone number to Corporate I can call?  This is ridiculous.  I don't think I will EVER buy anything from Dell again.
> Frustrated Bob in NJ

Answer:Cables for 2nd hard drive - Inspiron 3668 - Idiots at Dell...

You don't need to buy cables from Dell. Open up your case and see what type of SATA III cable is being used and where to locate your new HDD. Do you need a SATA cable with a straight or a right angle connector at the ends? Do you need an 18 inch cable? Does your power supply have an extra power connector for your HDD? After you get this information go to Amazon or Newegg and order your cable; you don't need a Dell cable, SATA cables are industry standard. You will probably save some money and seeing the inside of your computer will help you plan the installation.
Be sure to look at the mounting of the existing HDD. What you may need from Dell is the hard-drive assembly with release tabs if it does not come with a spare assembly. See the Service Manual section on removing the HDD.

Ok, I have this cable that is for my HD and apparently my CD drive. It is an EIDE cable (the flat one with the single colored wire labeled as #1[I think that's right]). So anyways, I have to stretch this cable to connect my CD Drive to the HD to the mobo, and it is really hard to get them together because the cable is just out of reach of connecting. The cable is labeled as the "HD Cable" with 3 connectors: 1 that connects to the mobo, that connects to teh "Master" and one that connects to the "Slave". I also have this other EIDE cable that is labeled as "CD Drive Cable". Can I just use that cable to connect the CD drive to the mobo? This question is probably hard to follow, but I tried explaining it as best I could. I wil try to get pics of the cables. Thanks for the help.

Answer:Hard Drive and CD Drive Cables?

LOL

Sounds like you got one of those DELL comps (or insert your mass-PC producer name instead).

If your mobo has two controller ports (where your ribbon cables connect to) then yes. Just go buy another flat-ribbon cable (make sure it's the right kind) and hook'em up. Put the drives on the end connectors, not the middle ones, and yer all set.

After doing some research, and more importantly after realizing that I still have no idea where my WinXP disc is, I have decided not to mess with the Raid set-up on the two hard drives I snatched from a formerly working computer. Instead, I am now working on turning this into some form of working setup without having to reinstall any part of the OS. Re-discovering what was installed on a computer that hasn't been powered on in almost a year, and that received no serious attention in about a year before then, was quite an adventure.

What I have done this far is:

1. Removing the eTRust security suite and replacing it with Comodo Firewall, AVG antivirus, SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster. Spybot was installed for scanning purposes, and will be kept for the same reason.

2. Created a new user account for myself, and deleted the others.

3. Went through parts of the Read & Run sticky before realizing that i might as well wait until I know what I'm keeping and which partitions I'm formatting before I spend another weekend on scan after scan after scan...

Here's what I want to do:

1. Use the 160GB partition C:\ for Windows XP (already installed there) all applications, games, and other such things.

2. Use the 80GB partition for storage only. Everything that ordinarily would go in My Documents would then go here, from music to photos to writing, to everything else similar to that.

Answer:transcend 250gb hard disk led is not blinking

Hi XAXA,From a troubleshooting perspective there's a handful of things to consider. We should start from the ground-up. Let's consider the following:- Is the device receiving electricity? (If you plug something else in that same socket, does it turn on?) <check this one when your hard disk is NOT working>---- If the answer is yes you may have a fault in the electrical wiring to the device.- Does the device have a toggle or similar switch to turn on? If it is fouled you may not be making a good electrical connection. <play with the switch; does it flicker or give you unpredictable results?)---- If the answer is yes you may have a faulty switch (or button, etc.)- Does the device make (excessive) noise when it is turned on?---- If a lot of noise, or a scraping or grinding sound, you have a physical issue with your hard drive. A protectionary measure may be the auto-off feature which you could be seeing.- Is the device plugged into your computer? (We want a good connection)---- If no, you should plug it into the proper port-type (such as a USB?)---- If yes, please ensure you're plugging it into the proper port-type (if not the proper port-type you could be causing an electrical short; check the device's documentation)In any event, if none of the above helps you may do best by checking the owner's manual or searching for one on the Internet (usually available for free in .PDF form.) You could also take it back to where you bought it and have them take a look at it. In ... Read more

Hello, I'm hoping I can find a solution to my problem here as I couldn't find one elsewhere on the net.
I have a laptop and currently have a 120GB hard drive in an external enclosure. I have just bought a new 250GB hard drive and have installed it in the external enclosure. Though partitioning and formating the 120GB was a breeze, I've had nothing but problems with the new 250GB.
Below are the specs of what I'm working with. In both Partion Magic and in the Win2000 Disk Management, it correctly displays the 250GB drive (233GB). Regardless of which program I use (ie. Partion Magic, Win Disk Management, command line FORMAT) I get problems.
Generally, what will happen is it will partition fine. Then it will begin to the formatting process (VERY slowly) and then either throw an error either during or at the end of the process. And this is when I try to format a very small partition (ie. 100MB). I have successfully formated a 10MB partition. On a large partition (ie. 30GB) the format process will start but will not progress.
The only two things I can think of is that the drive is faulty, or because I am booting my OS from a floppy there is some sort of recognition problem.
I can't run the diagnosis software from Maxtor because that requires the drive to be installed internally.
So any help to this problem will be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, how long should it generally take to format the 250GB drive in its entirety?

Hi. I have an external drive Simple Tech, Simple Drive model 96300-41001-011 which i have not used in a while. it should have the drivers built in but when i plug it in it runs but does not appear . Simple Drive does not appear in COmputer. I plug it into my Sony G11VN pc running Vista Business sp2. The usual window pops up “windows needs to install driver software for your Simple Drive” – I click “locate and install driver software” but it does not find it. I have looked for the driver on the site of Simple Tech which is now www.hgst.com but I can’t find it.
Have tried to plug into MacBook which also runs windows with no luck.
Any ideas? Where can I find the driver?

I appologize in advance for the long read.

This computer came with only a 10GB Seagate drive. It has less than 300MB left of unused memory, so I tried installing a 250GB Maxtor. It is only recognized as 30GB in the BIOS. I don't understand this because I have WinXP SP2 and LBA is enabled in the BIOS -
Not only that, but I have another 300GB Seagate that I want to install as a slave (I had previously installed this one as a slave to the 10GB but had the same problem with only 64GB being recognized.
I don't understand why my BIOS isn't recognizing it at it's full capacity since I have the latest version of BIOS and LBA is indeed enabled (I thought SP2 was supposed to correct this problem).

My hope is that someone out there can walk me through this step by step (from erasing the disk to installation) because I've been working on this thing all day long and nothing I've tried seems to work. The 10GB drive has to go. I want to install the 250GB drive as my master, copy the 10GB drive to it (I have Casper XP 3.0 for this purpose), and then install the 300GB drive ... Read more

Answer:250GB drive is seen only as 30GB

Did the Maxtor not come with a setup disc .....?
When you go to control panel / admin tools / computer management / disc management and right click on the "free" space of that drive what options do you get?

Hi, teine18

and welcome, if you'll loose the caps, you'll probably have more luck in getting help.....also, if you'll repost back to the same thread, everyone can follow along and know what has been tried, what failed, etc. so we aren't just wasting each others' time going in circles......

This will more than likely be called a "duplicate thread" and will be closed accordingly by one of the mods.....

Other thread is here:

Oh, and by the way, I'm going to bet that you got that error message before you typed at the c: prompt.......

Hi there..I have a 250GB SATA HD drive and trying to load XP on to it...all that happens is that the files load from the XP CD onto the HDD but the menu screen does not appear...I can view the files when logged in from a IDE drive but the whole XP software is not on the SATA drive.I have seen other advice which states I require chipset drivers to load onto my system from floppy drive after pressing F6 for RAID drives present?? The drivers downloaded are 7.5 MB...a bit big to go on a floppy!!Any help please would be much appreciated..The system is an HP xw9300 computer.many thanks in advance.

Answer:Installing XP on 250GB SATA drive

You should have a Floppy Disc with the Raid Driver on It to enable XP to see the drive.Setup will ask If you have a disc for the Raid Driver. Take a look on the CD for Raid Drivers & how to create a Floppy Disc, if not have a look on your Motherboard's website.Regards.

This may be a total noob question, but honestly I didn't have any idea what I should search for to find out if this is a known problem. Here it is:

Just put my new system together and in the BIOS it recognizes the drive for what it is, 250GB, but when I went to install XP, it saw it as 130GB. Is there a known reason for this or am I stuck using half of my drive? It's an SATA drive, does this have anything to do with it?

system specs:

Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Asus A8n-e
XFX 7800GT
2GB Corsair valueselect
250GB SATA2 WD HDD

Answer:XP only sees 130GB of 250GB drive

You need to see about slipstreaming a copy of Service pack 2 into your install CD. That might be a service pack 2 thing.

I use W7 Home Premium and would like to make a backup of my entire system. I will use the image method and the combination of my C and D discs are about 125GB total. It appears to me that this Seagate will do the job, however, I would like some opinions before I purchase it. Thanks

Answer:Seagate 250GB USB External Drive

You can get a 1TB external hd for $75. Why limit yourself. You can store an image of your hd, as well as back it up. Will the 250GB be ok? Yes. But go ahead and get the larger drive.

Hi there

I've recently come into a handful of old 2.5" hard drives from the upgrade of some EPOS systems. Most of the drives work fine, but two of them, both 250gb nominal capacity (a Hitachi HTE543225A7A384, and a TOSHIBA MK2576GSXZ) both show up as 111gb in Windows (7 Ultimate 64-bit).

PassMark DiskCheckup (under the Hidden Areas - HPA/DCO tab) shows that the Max User LBA for these drives is set to about half that of the Max Native LBA and the Max Disk LBA which would explain the discrepancy. However; when I try and use the "Modify HPA/DCO" option to reset the Max User LBA to the Max Native LBA it just comes up with "Error setting new Max User LBA".

Anybody got any ideas or know of a tool that might help?

I have a computer that's old and infected.

I want to repurpose it, and will replace the dinky, old drive, with a new, bigger, faster drive, and reinstall from scratch.  Also swapping out ram.

How common are bios/ram viruses?  i.e. I just want to make sure if I do the above without clearing out the current maleware/virus/trojan, the new install won't have the old crap there.

Thank you for your time!

Answer:chances of continued infection with new drive and install?

I would say that the chance malware changed the BIOS of your PC is low.

This type of malware exists in-the-wild, not only as a proof-of-concept, but it is not generic. AFAIK, there is no malware than can modify all types of BIOS.

What version of Windows did you have running on that old PC?

My sons got me a Samsung 840 EVO SSD for my birthday . . . and it ROCKS! (That's right . . . I be the Dad . . . :major). Never used an SSD before and been wanting to try one out but I couldn't justify the expense at this time.

I was able to clone my existing HDD to the SSD with no trouble. The speed of this thing is amazing all by itself, but Samsung has a RAPID (Real-time Accelerated Processing of I/O Data) setting in its provided software that allows the use of up to one gigabyte of system RAM to use as a high-speed cache. This seems to more than double the sequential read and write of the SSD. I'm astonished! So far, so good.

On to my question . . . I've been putting various OS folders on my old HDD (all the Library files; Documents, Videos, Pictures, Downloads, etc.) but I was wondering if anyone could suggest any other files that would be wise to move from the SSD to my regular platter drive? I've researched this issue, and there is so much contradictory information out there I'm not sure how to proceed . . . so I came home to MG to ask

Thanks

Answer:Samsung 840 EVO 250GB Solid State Drive

I think I answered at least one of my own questions - It's apparently not wise to move the AppData folder to another drive besides the OS drive. I can't really think of any other caches or folders that would make sense to move.

I've moved I.E. temp files, all my document Libraries, and put a good few of my most used utility programs on my HDD. This seems to be taking some of the pressure off the SDD. I've had it installed and running since May 27th and have only written .17 TB to it. I intend to keep the games I am currently playing on the SSD. Though, from the testing I've seen done on this drive, longevity doesn't seem to be an issue with this model.

Ran another performance test on the drive after a reboot, and the Random Write (IOPS) results are insane! Top is the SSD of course, and I ran a comparison test on the 500GB Seagate Barracuda drive that had been my OS drive. SSD FTW!

pls. help. my dell dimension 8200 desktop is not detecting i/o magic 250gb external drive. i plug it in to the USB and nothing happens. the device is on, my USB is working with other devices. but when i plug in the external drive nothing happens.

i've tried to get help from the manufacturer but everything that they've told me to do is not working.
- downloaded the drivers and still nothing.

i'm in dire need of assistance.

Answer:i/o magic 250gb external drive - not being detected

You may want to check the drive on another computer because it should just be plug and play.

I guess there's a chance the drive is not partitioned or formated, If you you go to Disk Management does it show the drive? How about in Device Manager, is it listed there or are there any errors showing?

My laptop Dell Latitude D830 running XP Pro does not recognize the external Seagate 250 gb drive, even under device Manager. I?ve tried it under Slave, Master and Cable-Select Option but with no success. Any ideas? Periodically I hear from the disk a click about one second apart. Probably it?s gone bad, so if it has crashed, how can I recover data on it? How can I get XP recognize it?

I have just bought this external drive and am trying to download the driver onto my laptop from the WD website, as I am running Windows 98SE. I have found the WD Essentials USB 2.0 driver and when I click the DOWNLOAD button a small screen appears with a blue line across the top and the words "File Download". However this box just flashes on and off all the time and locks up the computer. The only way to get rid of it is to switch the power off. I have enabled pop-ups as requested, and have also disabled Norton Antivirus 2005. I have no firewall. I have tried a number of times without success. Can you please help? Many thanks.

Certain simple activities (like opening certain documents) generate "not enough disk space" announcements. I want to move as much as possible to the D:\ drive, but I realize I can't simply drag and drop programs. I've made a backup of the system. I could start deleting things from the C, but I don't want to do something I'd be sorry for later. I need the steady hand of someone who knows their way around in this situation who can say, "do this, then do that." My iDrive backup subscription ran out in January and I can't afford to re-up just now. I think if I deleted the iDrive files from C:\ the SSD wouldn't be so full. I wondered if I could make an image with my other free backup software and save it to the other drive, then clear off a lot from the C:\ drive, then after that, selectively install to the cleaned up C:\? Any simpler, better comments and suggestions welcome.

I will be very thankful for your reply

Regards

Answer:windows 7 c drive is 250gb.How to make new partition

To reduce the size of the system partition in order to create a new, second partition, there are several third-party solutions for doing that, two of which are:

Free> EaseUS Partition Master: Free Partition Magic alternative. Best Free Partition Manager Freeware for Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8 32 bit & 64 bit - EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition.

Not free > Paragon Partition Manager: Paragon Partition Manager Personal - Overview

As regards a PDF > Word converter, I don't think a perfect one exists. Besides, we don't know which ones you've already tried.

I've previously added two home made external disks, a 120Gb IBM and a 300Gb Maxtor, to my Medion PC (Pentium 3Ghz, 18 months old) without any problem. I'm trying to add a 250Gb Hitachi Deskstar but nothing happens - even the fact that a USB device has been plugged in is not recognised. As soon as I replace the disk with a 40Gb Maxtor, it all works fine, so the case and connections don't appear to be a problem. I've replaced the Deskstar, thinking it was faulty, but exactly the same happens with the new disk and Add New Hardware doesn't find anything. I'm on XP Home. Has anybody got any suggestions, please?

Answer:External Drive - 40Gb disk works but not 250Gb

I have experienced similar problems in the past and found that the drive had to be jumpered 'master' for the USB to see it.

I'm working through the W500 configuration process.  I like the 250 gig, 7200 rpm drive for its size and speed, but I'm worried that the integrated (and not defeatable AFAIK) encryption will slow disk access time. But I may be worried about a non-issue if the encyption process is not limiting data access or transfer times. I do not need the encryption. Have any of you ordered this drive and then been disappointed by its performance? Jeff

Answer:W500: does encryption slow the 250GB 7200 rpm drive?

are you using a Full Disk Encryption capable seagate drive? AFAIK the FDE have no impact on performances of the laptop. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Full_Disk_Encryption_(FDE) have a read.
