Preferred Solution: Hard Disc copy program

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Hard Disc copy program

Norton Ghost, Powerquest Drive image. And there are some free ones, others will point you in the right direction.

I am looking for a special kind of software to make an image or an iso file from my old XP installation cd. The problem I have is that there are scratches on the cd that doesn't allow to complete the installation, so I need to make a new copy of that cd. I have already tried with a cd/dvd recorder software but it has difficulty reading the disc, so I was wondering if there is a software that can specifically deal with these type of discs.
thanks in advance

Answer:Program to copy a scratched CD disc

I think your best bet would be to buy one of those scratch dr kits where you wipe in little swirls or one of those things you put the cd in and crank the handle. It reads with a laser, if its damaged or too scratched, theres nothing for the laser to read.

I am looking for a lightweight CD/DVD (unprotected) disc copy program that works on Vista 64 bit.

I have always used Roxio Disc Copier and it works great, but does not like Vista 64 bit.

Anyone have any recommendations? I use Imgburn but it does not allow for straight disc to disc copies which is what I need.

I have just purchased a Video DVD which the author recommends copying to a hard drive as a backup. It is not copy protected. A Google search suggests copying to a disk image and then copying the image to the HD but does not say how to. If I succeed in making the copy will I be able to run the programme (A tutorial) in the same way it runs from the DVD drive which is rather noisy? Ideally I would like a solution that is not too expensive!

Answer:Solved: Copy a DVD video disc to a hard drive?

Simply make a folder on your HD. Put the DVD into your drive and 'Explore' it. Now simply Copy, then Paste the VIDEO_TS folder from your disc to your hard drive. Exploring the VIDEO_TS folder look for the VIDEO_TS.IFO file, double click it. You might to associate it with your media player first. You could create a shortcut to the file on your Desktop for quick play.

If they are "installed" you need to reinstall them, because of the registry.
If they are portable's, you can copy & paste(might want to get any .ini files belonging to them, as they contain any specific settings)

I doubt very much that you will be able to do this. And even if you could you wouldn't be able to play them in CD Players from a CD/RW disc. You would need lots of CDR discs to copy all of them.

Last week I bought a Sony 16X dual layer DVD-R which I installed next to my regular DVD reader. The new DVD writer will write CD's and DVD's straight from the hard drive perfectly but it won't write from disc to disc. I've tried fast copy on and off and both don't work. I've tried wiring the drives up in different ways with the same result every time.
I insert my "already copied" DVD into the reading drive and then a blank DVD into the writer, Nero starts, I click "disc to disc" and then burn. Before the disc even starts to right I get an error message that says "cannot copy this disc to a DVD". I've tried different discs with the same result. The discs I am trying to copy are copys them selves and not retail discs.
Anyone got any idea as to how to fix this?
Cheers

Answer:Help, can't copy disc to disc with Nero (DVD-R)

You have to be careful, I'm not sure what discs you are copying, but not all times do the programs that are used to copy remove the encryption or protection. It very well could have transferred it to the copy as well.

I am looking for a file copy program that will simply copy files without stopping to ask stupid questions or quitting in the middle of a job.

I use Windows Explorer now and drag and drop a bunch of folders from various computers to an external drive. Most of the time I am doing over 100,000 files and it takes 20minutes plus. The time is no problem because I just go off and do something else. The problem is when I come back after 20 minutes to see 5% done and a stupid question like ?xxx is a system file... are your sure you want to copy?. Why can?t I answer these questions up front rather than having to wait 5 minutes between questions?

What is worse is when it hits something like a long or invalid file name or my virus checker pops up to tell me that one of the files is adware. Explorer stops and tells me the problem but when I click OK the program simply stops leaving me with the problem with having to figure out what files it did and did not copy. Is there a program that will remember and continue where it left off?

Thanks

I think I may have found an answer to my boot problem. After reading the tutorial on system image restore I saw this statement.

"You can fool it into thinking that simply by marking the 7 partition as active.

May be as well to make it a "secondary" system partition , by copying across the relevant files - in case you forget to hand the active flag back"

How would I be able to make my "C" WIN7 drive my system drive instead of my "D" Vista drive. Right now my "D" Vista is my system drive.
Or, can I have two system drives at the same time? Remember these are on TWO SEPERATE hard drives.

Answer:How to make a hard disc a system disc

First make sure you are set to see hidden and protected files in Windows Explorer.

Copy bootmgr file from D: to C:
Copy boot folder from D: to C: and tell it to skip over copying bcd and bcd.log when it prompts.

Run this command from an elevated command prompt. You may copy and paste into it. Hit enter.

bcdedit /export C:\boot\bcd

Reboot into bios and change the primary boot device to be your C: drive.

Boot to Windows and make sure C: is now the system drive. If so, you may delete the boot folder and bootmgr file on D:

If you want two "system drives" so in case one fails you'll be able to boot from the other, don't delete anything and use bios to change drives in this instance.

I have 24 discs of home movies that are all burnt on Dvd-R media that my cousin gave me. I'd like to make a copy for my other cousin who asked me for them recently. But all I have is a stack of Dvd+R 8x TDK discs... I think I tried copying one of the discs using Nero a very long time ago, and it ended up being a coaster which didn't play. I don't know why the mediums differ, as they're just blank discs to me. Can anyone give me an explanation as to how I can go about burning copies without having to save an iso, or anything to hard drive? I'd like to do it straight from disc to disc.

P.s.
Are Dvd+R's less readable in standalone dvd players? Someone told me not all standalones play them.

You are correct in that DVD+R's are not always playable in some stand-alone players.

Question: OS Copy Disc

I recently pruchased a new computer with Windows 7 and it recommened making a copy of the OS since they don't furnish a OS disc. How do I make a copy of just the OS? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:OS Copy Disc

Often with new machines there is an option in the Start menu somewhere to create a set of recovery disks. The disks can usually be purchased from the manufacturer for a nominal fee (like $20). But that restores the machine way back to when it was bought, something you would rarely want to do.

Your hard drive probably has a "recovery partition" that will restore your machine if need be. But it is useless if the hard drive fails and you need to replace that. A good disk image backs up everything, your operating system, all your files, and all your installed programs. Making one once a week, for example, means that you can never lose more than a week's changes on your machine.

A better choice is to get the machine set up the way you want and then make an image of the entire drive on an external drive (or DVD's). That way, when you restore the image due to hard drive failure or other problems, you are restoring the system to the way you want it set up instead of all the way back to "factory" settings. You can make other "images" to restore to along the way, too.

Answer:how to copy my xp onto disc

I suspect the salesman was referring to copying a drive image of your primary partition to a DVD or several CDs.

I just bought an Acer brand that had it's own version of drive imaging software for that purpose when I started the comp for the first time.

As I also have Drive Image 2002, I also copied a drive image onto cds in that format.

If a hard drive fails, use the self booting cds/dvd you made to reinstall the same OS back onto your computer with a new hard drive.
If you get severe corruption from malware, those CDs or dvds are much quicker than going thru the old reinstall procedures.

Also what's nice, is the ability to image that partition after you've installed most of the software you use. It puts you back up and running in minutes instead of hours.

Tell us the make and model of your computer. The specific model of a brand name system is often shown on a label on the outside of the case somewhere, or it can often be determined by going to the brand name's web site and loading a program they have available, if Windows is still working, on the subject computer. If it's a Dell computer...Go here for how to find the Service tag "number":http://support.dell.com/support/top...Tell us what it is.If it's a HP or Compaq computer.....Go here:http://partsurfer.hp.com/search.aspxScroll down a bit.Look for the similar label on the outside of your computer.Quote the specific model number - that's at the end of the first line.Quote the Product number - that's on the third line.............If you have an XP MCE version on your computer, e.g. MCE 2005, if you have a brand name system, you probably NEVER had Recovery or Restore disks that can be used to just repair XP MCE. If you got any Recovery or Restore disks at all with the computer, probably the only thing you can do with them is to install all the original software on the computer that it had on it originally, and in that case, you will lose ALL of the personal data that's on at least the C partition that you have added, unless you copy the data you don't want to lose to elsewhere BEFORE you use the Recovery or Restore disks. If you can't get Windows to work properly, you can boot the computer from something such as a Linux CD and copy the data you don't want to lose to elsewhere.You... I am having real problems copying photos from my pc onto disc.

I am using XP to do this. Never had the problem before.

Each time I click 'copy to disc' things go well until the end when I get told that it had a problem and the disc may now be useless. I'm up to disc 6 with this message now.

On other occassions I am told that it has been sucessful. I think great it has worked at last. I then load the disc to see if the file/pictures are on the disc and nothing happens. The pc knows the disc is there but will not show anything on the screen. I'm up to disc 3 with this happening to me.

I am using the right discs CD-R as it says on my pc and in 'my computer'

I have also just opened a new case of discs and am thinking that this might be part of the problem.

I hope someone can help me with this as I am totally clueless when it comes to computers.

Cheers,

Paul.

It is possible you have a faulty pack of cd-r`s, especially since the problem has only occured since opening the new pack.

Try some different cd-r`s and see if the problem disappears.

This is the first time this has ever happened to me. A friend of mine gave me a disc to make copies for them. It's a family home video. It's a DVD+R RW by FujiFilm. I'm unable to make a copy of it. I keep getting an error message saying that the disc is dirty or clean it. It's not dirty and it doesn't have a scratch on it. It will play fine on all my DVD players. I tried copying it with DVDFab 8 and Sonic Record Now. My Dell computer is running Windows XP and I'm able to play the DVD movie just fine using PowerDVD. Why won't it copy it? I'm also using a Philips DVD+-RW DVD8631 optical drive. I did notice that the main menu of the movie has a Apple Logo on the bottom right indicating that it was possibly made with iMovie. It should still be a VOB file. Could it be a disc compatibility issue? What other software should I try for making copies? Thanks

Answer:Unable to Copy DVD+R disc? Please help.

If the DVD was not compatible with your optical drive or PC, it wouldn't play in PowerDVD.
To make an exact copy of it, you just need to copy it as a "Data" disc using any popular data burning software.
You can either do the copy from "Disc to Disc", or the preferred method of making a "standard ISO disc-image" from the original, then burning the ISO image to a blank DVD+R (using R/W media for recodings you want to last a long time is not recommended).

The loading bar for makes a tiny bit of progress. When I cancel the process, some files did successfully copy. It seems to just get stuck on .bin files.

There is not error message or crash, it simply the bar just stops moving. It even still reports the speed (always incorrectly, the real speed is 0).

While this has happened before with another disk, I have copied .bin files from disks lots of other times without any hiccups, so it must be something about these specific disc and not my computer.

Also, I doubt this means anything: The icon rather that being the usual generic .bin icon is the VLC traffic cone, and under file type it says "VLC media file (.bin)." I don't think that means anything.

Answer:Can't copy files from disc

I would guess that the file is corrupted. Especially if it is a large disk image file. It could be that one or more of the sectors holding the file data have errors.

Best to check that disk with chkdsk /r. If I'm correct, that might repair it, but I would make a new image shortly afterward anyway.

Hello,
This applies to any downloads on line. When I purchase software on line some companies give you an option (for another $6 or $7, in addition to the software cost) to send out a disc as a backup copy. Can't I just make a copy from what I download? And what would be the difference in my copy over their copy?
Thanks,
Jeff

Answer:Copy Software to Disc

Probably none except you get a pressed disc that is going to be more reliable than a burned copy.

We have desktop and laptop for personal and business work and have made a second partition of 16Gb on both ( Thanks forum). All our data is on the second partition "D" and is backed up to DVDs which have copies. My laptop has pre-installed XP and a recovery disc. I know that if I use the disc it will format the whole disc to one partition again and install the XP O/S.Is there a way I can make a disc from the XP O/S which is installed and use it to re-install XP O/S (if I need to do) without losing the "D" drive and the data? I was told there is a backup on the HD called 1386 but now I have found it I don't know what to do with it.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Stella

Answer:Recovery Disc -Copy O/S

If you change Partitions on a Drive that only as a Recovery CD disc. The Recovery disc will most likely not work now. So if I was you I would get Acronis and create a new one by creating a Image of the OS Partition with Acronis

Question: CD Audio Disc Copy

I have several music tracks on a Recordable cd, what I cannot figure out to do is copy these files to my hard disc and then convert them so that I can copy them onto another CD, Maybe there is an easier way, please help.

Answer:CD Audio Disc Copy

Hi, first I suggest you get this program http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-1896422-100-1693537.html then you will have a tool to do what you want to do. (it's free) If your music files are in mp3 format , it is easy, simply make a folder such as "My Music" Open it and then minimize it to half screen, then insert your disc, if it is a mp3 format, you will see a list of files(songs) minimize this screen to the other half of the screen and drag and drop the files you want. The program mentioned above will convert wav to mp3, mp3 to wav, cd to wav, etc, several programs will do this, but Simple seems to be the easiest to use, please post back if you have anymore questions...Rhett

Hello, we are new to this site and this is our first question. It may seem a trivia to some but it's driving us mad..... We've spent most of the day getting nowhere and then we came across this very friendly site and thought someone may be able to help us.

We have in the region of 400 emails in our 'sent' box of OE which we would like to copy to disc to keep (not on the PC). We may need them in future for reference purposes.

We have Nero Home/StartSmart to burn the CDs but are not sure what we need to read them. It would appear that Nero will transfer them as an .nba file which we can open with Nero but cannot read. We thought they would transfer naturally as a .dbx file so perhaps we need software that can open the . dbx files.

If anyone can help, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

You can't just COPY the material off the video tapes onto any DVD disk. Your DVD writer should be able to use both DVD+&- formats. You do the editing BEFORE burning the disk. Just right click on the drive with the DVD in, then explore when it opens up highlight all the MP3's or album files and copy and paste them to the music folder on the Laptop hard drive. That is assuming the laptop has a DVD drive, which I think it will have with running Vista.

I replaced hard drive yesterday and had a few minor hichups. One is part fixed after reloading Office2003 I hope.

However, there seems to be some sound issues.
Board is Intel Perl 865 and uses onboard sound (Sound Max) and all was great before hard drive replacement including original hard drive.

When starting PC all seems fine as I can use Media Player and Creative to hear music. I can start il2 (flight sim) and sound is fine. However when I start up Microsoft CSF3 (also flight Sim) I get no sound. When I then check sound in other items mentioned above sound is gone. I have copied backup over CSF3 but nothing changed.

When doing disc copy with WD Lifeguard it said some files had a problem. I'm thinking that a file related to sound has a problem and activation of Microsoft CSF3 causes problem which cannot be rectified without reboot.

Cheers

My guess is that the recovery disks are designed to be used independently, and the flash drive doesn't know the right file location for the 2nd disk. Not sure how you would fix that. You may have to try to get an optical drive to connect and recover the system.

When I use "send to drive E" the drive keeps opening saying "insert disc". If I insert a recorded disc it is recognized and Autoplay choices work. Neither cd-r nor cd-rw blanks are recognized as being in the the drive for copying.

Answer:why is disc in drive not recognized when copy

Before you can use "send to drive" when it's a cd/dvd you must first prepare the disk by formating it using Roxio or Nero or similar.I don't recomend this option as it tends to be unreliable. A better option is to make a folder to store files until you are ready to burn them. So make a folder "Burn Files" add it to the send to option. You can now use send to "Burn Files" when ready to burn, start the burner program that are using and drag the files over or use the add files to burn.
