CAddy & Internal DVD RW ...

Question: CAddy & Internal DVD RW ...

... would it work (USB 2.0 interface)? I know that for extra storage, a 300Gb disc seems good value - but I get the backup storage (on DVD RW discs) and a DVD copier too - alll in one portable package - but wd this setup of an external caddy containing an internal DVD RW actually work?

Preferred Solution: CAddy & Internal DVD RW ...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: CAddy & Internal DVD RW ...

CDROM caddies are not very common, but in principle I don't see why it shouldn't work. A USB2 enclosure is just a box with an IDE to USB2 adaptor. For a DVD burner, the caddy must be USB2 and your computer must support it as well (firewire would probably be slightly better). USB1 would be too slow to cope with the data transfer required for burning DVD.

I've got a 250GB SATA Western Digital hard drive installed in my PC. I've never had any problems with it, but I want to buy another internal hard drive and a caddy so I can back up/clone the current one in case it fails. In the event of a failure, I'd remove the back-up drive from the caddy and install it in the PC.Here are my questions:1. Would you stick with Western Digital or are there better makes?2. Are caddies much of a muchness or would you recommend a particular make?3. Because of my plan to install the back-up drive in the PC in the event of a failure, would it have to have the same capacity (250GB) or could I buy something larger? Thanks.

Answer:Which internal hard drive and caddy?

Caddies are much of a muchness - IMHO aluminium ones are better from a heat point of view. I use caddies myself for both of my hard drives.BUT - for a backup drive I use an external USB unit - it's far simpler to plug and unplug when needed than a caddy.AND - I don't clone, I image4 - which is just as straightforward as cloning in the event of failure (though it takes longer), and uses significantly less drive space. It means I can get three full images (grandfather, father, son) on my backup drive - plus a daily data backup.AND - it makes no difference what make of drive you use. You can use a small lightweight 2.5" drive, which needs no external PSU if you like.

I have x2 identical PC's (Acer Aspire M3970, x1 at home, x1 in remote office) I'd like to put the hdd in the built in sata caddy so I can use it to boot both, and easily transfer work to home. I've initially tried this but get BSOD just as the Win 7 logo anim starts. Is this as easy as it sounds or am I missing something? Thanks.

Answer:Boot fail from internal caddy

This may provide you with an answer.

When you take a hdd with a Windows operating system installed from the computer it was originally installed on and install it in another computer you are asking for major problems. The excerpt below is from a Intel article which describes in detail what happens. The article also mentions a reference to an article by Microsoft, it can be seen here.

Moving a hard drive with Windows already installed to a new motherboard without reinstalling the operating system is not recommended.

If a hard drive is moved to a new computer, the registry entries and drivers for the mass storage controller hardware on the new motherboard are not installed in Windows for the new computer you may not be able to start Windows. This is true even if you move the hard drive to a motherboard with the same chipset, as different hardware revisions can cause this issue as well.

Additionally, moving a hard drive to a new motherboard may not exhibit any errors until you install new IDE drivers. This is because each chipset uses a different Plug-n-Play (PNP) ID to identify it. If you change your motherboard, your registry will have multiple PNP IDs (for the old hardware as well as the new hardware). If there are multiple entries in the registry, Windows cannot determine which hardware to initialize and therefore fails with a STOP error.

Hello everyone,
I am using HP p028TX as my primary laptop, Reviewed here-
[Honest Review] HP P028TX Laptop Review [Core i3 1.9Ghz, 4GB ram, 1TB HDD, Nvidia 830M 2GB, Beats] | NotebookReview

The laptop is Mostly used For Photo/Videos and Gaming. The laptop came with 1TB HDD and I am lately running out of space. Its very cumbersome to use External USB HDD for certain Data. I have ordered an optical Drive HDD caddy with a view to adding one more HDD and enjoy software RAID.

Here's what I plan to do-
1> Install One more 1TB HDD in Optical Caddy.
2> Convert Both Disks (Internal+Caddy) to Dynamic Disks.
3> Setup Striping RAID 0 array for the data part. I am not touching the Boot partition nor willing to install Windows on RAID.
4> Enjoy higher performance of software for Games/ Large videos etc.

Here are my doubts-
1> Will conversion to Dynamic disks mess up the windows 7 bootup? Is the process better from Inbuilt disk management or I need some professional tool?

2> Will the Windows Image Backup Still able to backup/Restore system C:\ partitions from Dynamic disks? (To external USB HDD)

3> Is the Configuration Reliable Long term? (I am aware of Risks regarding RAID 0, Many PCs at my office Run RAID 0). I am more curious regarding the reliablity of DYNAMIC DISK.

4> Is it very cumbersome to restore/Recover data from a Dynamic disk in case something messed up? I do keep backups of Data on USB HDD, But I rely on windows Image backup for ... Read more

Howdy fellers,

I could really use some pointers. Here's my problem.

We have a temporary network at our new premises that uses a Huawei 4G modem/router/firewall/wifi combo device and a bunch of laptops.

The router is configured to NAT all the relevant services we need to/from the outside world. However, the device does not support hairpin NAT, that is, host names/FQDNs that are resolved as external (but really exist internally) are not reflected back into the internal network.

For example, our internal mail server is called mail.ourdomain.com. Internally it has a fixed IP of 192.168.10.9. However, externally it is routed via an MX record that points to our WAN ip, which could be 147.184.bla.bla or what have you.

Mail accounts in Outlook are configured to use mail.ourdomain.com for pop3 and smtp, but using external DNS makes it resolve to the WAN IP, and the device dumps the packets out into the cloud instead of hairpin NATting it back.

I can solve this by adding an entry in my hosts file:

192.168.10.9 mail.ourdomain.com

BUT this stops working whenever someone takes their laptop home and uses a wireless 3g/4g connection, then the above private IP becomes invalid, resolution fails and BLAM no email. The entry in the host file needs to be commented out for it to work. And uncommented once they get inside our internal network again.

This is turning into a real headache; is there a way to get this to work without resorting to implementing my own DNS or DMZ? If it were... Read more

Weird problem. Transferring between the two internal hard drives is very slow and some times does the bursts speeds. But if I try transferring from EITHER of the internal drives to an external drive they transfer at their recommended speeds.

Raptor SATA 36Gb - OS
Maxtor SATA 500Gb - Storage
External Maxtor SATA 500Gb - Backup (USB 2.0)

Any ideas?

i'm about to purchase a new hard drive for my computer and i'm trying to decide if i should get a large internal HD (500gb) or if i should get a smaler capacity harddrive 250gb with an external drive. I use my computer mostly for music/video and was thinking of using the external drive to store those exclusively and use the internal drive for the OS, hence the wanting a smaller capacity drive as i can't find a use for a 500gb HD just for an os/ a few programs. I'm not a big gammer at all, but i do enjoy playing simulation games like The Sims 2and Startopia, which don't take up much space either. Currently i have 2x80GB drives, one with vista and my music and the other with videos. Guidance much appreciated.

I ordered a computer in 2014. I installed an internal hard drive and named it E: (C: is the main drive, D: is the recovery partition). An internal DVD/CD player was included, however, I did not notice that it wasn't working until after installing the hard drive as E:. I tried to fix the DVD/CD player and it seemed simple: a wire was hanging out and just had to snap it into place.

When I did that, the computer refused to load and was stuck on the HP startup screen for hours (literally). I disconnected the E: internal hard drive and rebooted. After a few minutes, the computer loaded into Windows and the DVD/CD player was now E: and worked.

How can I keep the internal hard drive as E: and still have a working DVD/CD player? How can I force Windows to use another letter for the DVD/CD player instead of it automatically assigning it E and coming into conflict with the hard drive?

Hello,
I recently purchased a Studio 1558 laptop. The specs are below:
Processor: Intel (R) Core (TM) i7 CPU   Q 720 @ 1.60 GHZRAM: 6 GBSystem type: 64-bit operating systemATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470Sound - ATI High Definition Audio Device, IDT High Definition Audio CODECI have plugged in older Dell speakers that I used with my desktop. The sound works fine until I load a webpage, or load a folder etc and then sound will temporarily switch from my external speakers to my internal laptop speakers. This is quite annoying as it happens frequently and sometimes I blare my externals which can't be good if it keeps switching to my internals.
Can anyone recommend a fix? It would be greatly appreciated.

So my 1 TB internal hard drive has less than 30 GB of space and I want to upgrade to a 2 TB internal so I can hold more of my games on it. How would I be able to transfer every single thing from the 1 TB to the 2 TB?

Answer:Help Upgrading 1 TB Internal to 2 TB Internal Hard Drive

Assuming this is for a desktop, you would plug in the new HDD into the sata port on your motherboard, amd make sure it is getting power from the PSU, and win7 should recognize it and mount it. You then make sure its has the NTFS file system and you can drag and drop from one drive to the other. Or use a program to copy over files like teracopy. I use teracopy because it keeps exact listing of what is being copied and exact info about size. Now as far as transferring games, I may be wrong but I think you would have to reinstall the game into the larger drive if you wanted to make use of the 2tb drive. I am not a big gamer so take my game advice with a bit of salt, I am simply trying my best to help you out

????? ????? ?????????? ??????????
Sorry for language mistakes ...
After my first laptop corrupted ,, i opened it and take its internal hard disk drive , then i put it inside HHD Portable ( which allow you to use the internal hard disk as external ), so that i used my old laptop hard disk as an external .
now i want to use it again as an internal hard disk in another laptop , but when installed it in the other laptop , the boot doesnt run normally , even " windows welcome" screen doesnt appear , and the following massage appears in the blank screen :
" A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart Error "
.
can you help me to use this hard drive again as an internal hard disk ???

Answer:turn back my internal HD again as an internal

A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart Error
The laptop cannot read the drive - either not fitted correctly or more likely the hard drive is corrupt.
Also when you get the laptop to read the drive the windows on the drive is licensed to the old laptop not the new one plus the drivers in winows will be for the old laptop not the new one.

Answer:M58 HDD Caddy

Fitting a HDD into an optical drive bay can be accomplished with an inexpensive 3.5"--> 5.25" conversion kit available anywhere (Like the one HERE). I think Lenovo has a bracket for that but it would be really expensive. The hole for the optical drive can only be covered up by a blank bezel, that's going to be the tough part to find, if it is an issue for you at all.

Question: 8.1 from hd caddy

Hello all,

So I find myself in an odd situation. I upgraded form xp to windows 8.1 on an old laptop I had. Since then, this laptops video card has started to go. So what I am looking to do is to take the hd from that pc, put it in a hardrive caddy, and boot from that on a different computer. For certain reasons I need to retain both OS's.

My question is this. How will Microsoft deal with the licensing in this situation. I attempted this and got a notification that I will need to reactivate windows, but does this count as a second pc in their eyes? Or can I make the call and just say that the hardware has changed.

another note, Ideally I would like to move between both computers without re licensing, but I'm assuming this might not be possible.

I need to transfer contents of an IDE hard-drive to a Sata machine. I have been told I need a caddy!. I confess I have no idea what this is.Would someone be kind enough to explain what I need and how to get it to work?.Many thanks

Answer:Caddy

This is a IDE caddy that you put your Hard Drive into. click hereThe Jumper on your Drive as to be set to Master for it to work, you then just plug it into a USB port for it to load. Do not just pull it out when you have done as this can damage the drive. In lower Task Bard near clock you will see a Icon with a Green arrow right click on this to safely remove. If you have problems shutting it down, power your PC down then remove the plug before restarting PC

Hello,
I'm having problems with my WD blue 1TB HDD (which came originally with the laptop) being recognized using it in CD-ROM caddy.
I bought Dell Inspiron 17 5767 like a month ago, and of course I want to upgrade it with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB), and then use original HDD instead of CD-ROM.
I already read the post: en.community.dell.com/.../19536697
I have Salcar caddy, which is proven good, already in previous 2 laptops, one HP and one Dell. Also the current one with this HDD was tested in older Dell and the disk is recognized and works superb. So from this I can conclude, the caddy and the disk are completely fine, something must be wrong on my new Dell side.
I upgraded BIOS (to 1.09), SATA and other drivers yesterday ... nothing changes.
The OS (on the SSD) is original as got from Dell, as the data was migrated with the Samsung utility from original HDD to SSD. Then HDD was formatted, currently has only one partition.
In BIOS I disabled Virtual machine and LAN boot settings, as they are not needed. Also, LPM is disabled, as suggested in other post. But still no change.
The HDD in caddy is not recognized in BIOS, nor Windows, nor Disk Management, nor CMD (diskpart).
I also tried to create smaller partition, about 850 GB, still not recognized. I didn't try with smaller than 750 GB, maybe should do this, but I don't believe this is a problem.
I bet there are other users out there with the same problems - did anyone got this worki... Read more

Thats it realy, I was wondering if it might be a good idea as I have a lot of home video to capture and edit . I thought I could use more than one hdd to capture onto and chop and change drives as required. It would also be handy as an off site store for the more important files. But can you use any HDD?Cheers Lixdexik.

Answer:Can any HDD be used as/with a caddy?

Put a HDD to an external enclosure or buy an external HDD.

I've just fitted a hard drive caddy and put 2nd hd in it.It has a sliding lock at the front which prevents the caddy from being removedand it also incoporates a power switch. The instuctions say the drive can be hot-swapped because releasing the lockcuts off the power supply to the disk in the caddy. If I do this with W98 runningis there likely to be a problem when I put the other disk in?My instinct is to switch the computer off before swapping drives. Any views / experiences on this please?CD

Answer:HD Caddy and hot swapping.

It is hot swappable,if you use software, but is it necessary?safer to swap when machine is off.Why risk losing your files.

Question: W510 HDD Caddy

Ok, so I have a W510, and ordered a HDD Caddy.  The box that the unit came in has 43N3412 written on it, but the actual Caddy has art number 43N3429.  It's not that big of a deal if they are the same part, but here's my issue... 1.  There is a HUGE gap at the top and bottom of the caddy which makes it look like it was never meant to be installed on this model. 2.  Whenever I carry my laptop sideways with the Bay facing down (going between meeting rooms, etc) the drive disconnects.  In order to see the drive again, I have to put pressure on it as if I am inserting the caddy into my laptop again. So, either this is not the correct caddy that was sent to me, or I have an issue with the case on my laptop in which the "catches" are not doing their job. (This does not happen with the DVD RW that came with the unit). Does anyone have one of these caddies working, and staying connected when you laptop is on its side?  If so, can you verify my part number against yours?  Cheers,Josh

Answer:W510 HDD Caddy

Hi same2you, The 43N3412 is the Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (Ultrabay Slim 9.5mm) and it's listed under accessories for the W510, but the W510 actually got a bay with the height of 12.7mm. So this would fit perfectly for the W500 that got a bay with the height of 9.5mm, but for the W510 there will be a gap like you describe. I believe the 43N3429 is the sparepart number of the same product. I cannot find a 12.7mm drive bay adapter from Lenovo and i don't think Lenovo ever offered a full-height 12.7mm bay adapter. If they will offer a 12.7mm drive bay adapter because of the new thinkpad models in the close future i don't know. I have seen 12.7mm drive bay adapters from ebay and other places for the T510/W510, but never seen any from Lenovo. If you google for something like "T510 drive bay adapter 12.7mm" you should find it. Whether or not the disconnect issue you describe is correct or not i don't know, but i find it hard to believe that's the way it should work. Since it's listed under accessories for the W510 i would except that it at least work fine with the gap, but i also find it strange that Lenovo doesn't offer a drive bay adapter that fit with the new Thinkpads. Maybe someone else can provide some more info about your disconnect problem, but i don't think Lenovo currently got a 12.7mm drive bay adapter. -gan

Hello,I would like to ask for support with following issue. I bought new SSD HDD and wanted to use it as drive with system. So I removed the original HDD (with installed Windows 10 and more partitions) and installed the SSD. After that I installed OS Windows 10. This system works fine on the SSD. I placed my original HDD to a caddy and connected it instead of optical drive. I disabled booting from CD/DVD and USB in BIOS.  After restart, the drive was recognized in BIOS (displayed in boot order), but the laptop won't boot. It got stuck with HP logo and did not boot. I realized that when I disconnect the caddy, Windows boots from SSD. When I connect the caddy again, after a while hdd is visible in My Computer (all partitions, but without correct labels), but none of the partitions is accessible. I thought it can be because there is still instaled OS on the caddy drive. So I booted GParted from USB, removed all partitions and created one with NTFS. After that the drive is not visible in BIOS boot order, but if I connect it after Windows starts, I can see it in Disk Management.Because I'm lost with this issue, I tried some procedures with GParted and TestDisk which caused the drive was in RAW data format. Finally I removed the one partition in GParted and after boot, the drive is marked as Uninitialized and it asks me for initialize where  I can select MBR or GPT format. I tried GPT, but it failed because IO errors. My questions:1. is it even possible to ... Read more

Answer:HDD in caddy not working

Hi, Because the old HDD still has a signature therefore you can use a very simple work around 1. Mount old HDD to other machine, NOT HP machine to copy files and reformat it,2, Now put it back to the caddy and machine will boot from SSD. Regards.

Hi, I bought a Z51 (as a christmas present for my mother).I have replaced the DVD RW with a caddy (I don't know if I can post the link here). I have set up a new SSD instead of the HDD, and installed the HDD into the caddy. I have been consistently able to boot from the original HDD (in the caddy), but only after a restart. (each time: first try, does not boot, does not appear in the boot menu. Then restart, and it works fine.) Windows 10 is now installed on the SSD and can perfectly boot (without the need of restarting), but the HDD appears neither in Windows nor in the BIOS. In fact, I have been able to mount it only once, after I launched the BIOS from the windows recovery options. Then it was recognized both in the bios and in the disk partition manager of windows 10. But I am not able to reproduce this. As this behaviour is quite strange, I was wondering if: it is a BIOS issue, a driver issue, or a caddy issue... Could you please provide me some advice ?

I have been considering a HD caddy for use on the SATA interface of my Z70 and saw some for sale. But all don't have an OEM fit and require using the Optical drive face. I don't see a release for the DVD drive when I flipped the notebook over either like my ThinkPad has w/Ultrabay. I am not sure if its even supported properly by the bios and do want to be able to used the DVD drive as well. So its not a permanent solution I am looking for. Despite have ONE USB 3.0 port I still fine it quite slow moving data to 3.0 flash drives I have bought. SATA is sata and works without a fuss as fast as the drives can cache it and write. I miss ESATA port not on this notebook. It was a must have when I was looking for a notebook before and the T520 has it all but very poor screen and sound is horrible even for voice via Skype as a business system its bad and not solution for  it.

Question: Harddrive Caddy

What is the best way to shut down a USB hard drive caddy? I have a 120gig hardrive in my caddy and am wondering if after I do the safely remove hardware should I then be shutting down the power on my caddy or should I leave it on until I shut down my computer. Also sometimes it will not shut down that way because it says the system is busy and the only way I can shut it down is to turn off the power switch. Could somebody please tell me the safest way to turn on and off this caddy so I don't do harm to my harddrive. Thank you so much.

I am waiting for my new HDD drive to arrive for my laptop. The old drive is still working but not too reliable, but good enough for using as a temp storage device. If I put this old HDD into a USB caddy is it possible to copy all the data from this drive to the new drive including the Vista OS, enabling me to run Vista on the new HDD instead of the old drive. I have the recovery discs for the old drive but have been told these will not operate on the new HDD because I didn't purchase from the manufacturer. Any help appreciated.

Answer:USB Caddy to HDD copy

I never heard that a new drive would by design stop the old cd/dvd's from recovering the system. It may be that the disks simply use data on the drive that is hidden in a partition..Most new drives come with clone software. You put the new disk in the caddy and then clone it over. Then swap it. Answer:B50-80 hdd upgrade and caddy

Hi Vendra,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This caddy should do fine
http://hddcaddy.com/en/lenovo-ibm-hdd-caddy/1040-lenovo-b50-hdd-caddy.html

A 9mm caddy should work as your system supports that type of ODD drive

This manual list the ODD support at page 27

Al long as you don't induce any damage while you do the upgrade, your warranty is still valid.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

I've taken an IDE HD from my now-defunct old Windows ME computer, placed it in an appropriate caddy and connected it to my newish WinXP machine. The intention was to wipe it and use it as an image and data file back-up. At this point it occurred to me that it would be sensible to look at its contents just in case there was anything left on it worth keeping. However, I'm not sure how to do this, or even if it's possible at this stage. It is recognised in the Disk Management window as Disk03 (but no drive letter), with the right capacity and manufacturer's details, but is marked as not initialized and unallocated. Right-clicking brings up a sub-menu with an 'initialize' option, but I thought this was equivalent to re-formatting it so I'm reluctant to try it.It's not vital, as all the important stuff was backed up and transferred to the new computer. But any comments or advice would, as always, be gratefully received.

Answer:Reading old HD in caddy

Have you changed the jumper on the HD from Master to Slave? Also your ME HD may be FAT32 instead of NTFS. Don't know if this might make it unrecognised.

Answer:can't see hdd in caddy on win7

I don't know what caused the disc to be seen as dynamic and or invalid but there seems to be a fix of changing it back to a Basic disk.

Now, you can't use disk management to do it because that method formats the disc destroying all data.

I see two methods for keeping data safe.

1) Using TestDisk http://mypkb.wordpress.com/2007/03/28/how-to-non-destructively-convert-dynamic-disks-to-basic-disks/

2) Using a Hex Editor http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=191006

If you use the hex editor method the trick will be finding the correct disk connected to your computer. It should show as a removable disk which should make it straight froward.

As far as I can tell either method will work. I've navigated both programs so if you have any questions--ask away.

I noticed the internal SATA slimport when i pushed out the plastic "thing" that fill out the optical bay, so i know its doable and im pretty sure i need one in 9 or 9,5". What caddy will you recommend?are the caddies universal? PS, i from Denmark if thats make a different.   thanks in advance for you answers

Neighbour's son's laptop died. He had games he liked to play. I suggested a caddy which she bought and connected to her PC. All the files and folders can be seen, but games won't run. Thoughts, please.

Answer:HDD in a caddy - am I missing something?

Yes, I'm afraid you are missing something.
The games would need to be installed from the original disk onto her PC in order to run. She wouldn't be able to run MS Word from the disk-in-a-caddy either. If there are documents on that drive, they'd be openable, but would use the software installed on the host machine.

Question: External HDD Caddy

Bought the above (on great advice from here I may add) after having difficulty accessing my HDDi, my laptop picks it p ok but tells me disk needs to be formatted, which is what I didn't want to do. The disk was formatted NTFS with XP Pro The original problem was a boot sector fault which I wasn't able to repair, hence the option of trying to access it as an external drive. would it have anyhing to do with the jumper pins? or do I resign myself that I have lost the data?

Answer:External HDD Caddy

changed jumper pins and now can see all my files

I bought this HDD Caddy from NewModeUS to put an additional drive in the UltraBay adapter. There is a clear plastic layer with a tab on the end over the side of the caddy that has the perforated holes in it. Usually I've seen this tab to help pull the hard drive out of it's slot in a computer but I haven't seen it completely cover the perforated holes of the caddy before.  Anyone know if I should leave the plastic layer on the caddy or not? Will it effect the temp of the drive? Thanks,

Hello,

Can you put a normal Blu-Ray drive, ( http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139985 ) into a normal external caddy?

I'm thinking there could be HDCP issues?

Regards,

Alex.

Seriously, I think it is brilliant the way some non English people can communicate in English - this isn't sarcasm - I really mean it.
When a person whose first language isn't English and they write an instruction manual in English about, let's say how to put together a flat pack table or cupboard. At worst it's annoying, at best it's a laugh. Especially when you're watching someone else struggling with it.
But I feel - in view of Health and Safety - there should be a limit as to what kind of instruction manual can be translated in this way. Putting a dowel in a hole where a screw should go, is one thing. Connecting a machine to the mains, then to a PC, when you're not sure if it's the right voltage or you've slid the switch in the correct direction; is a whole different thing altogether!
I think I can speak for most people when I say that seeing or hearing about someone blowing up their PC and being electrocuted in the process; would be just about as far away as anyone can get to being either funny or annoying.
So, before anything even close to this happens to me I'd just like to ask...Does anyone use an all in 1 HDD Docking Caddy? I have just bought one and for what good the 'English' manual is to me, they could have saved their time and money and written it in Chinese? However, the good thing is the manual isn't actually giving general instructions on how to use the caddy. It is in fact telling you how to 'Clone'. Which, luckily for me is not why I got the caddy. Why luc... Read more

Is it possible that you are trying to put an HDD with an IDE Connection, as opposed to a SATA Connection, into the Caddy?
There may be more types of Connection for all I know.

I've a couple of 3.5" HDD (SATA and IDE) taken from an old Desktop and a Samsung PVR. I also have suitable external USB enclosures. The question is which Jumper settings to use (or leave unused) when in a USB enclosure. One HDD (WD) has the Boot flag set (SATA) and the other Seagate (IDE) hasn't. Both are 200-300 GB sized. Any advice appreciated.

Answer:3.5" HDD in a USB Caddy

External IDE drive jumper position should be set as master.
