Question: desktop fails to load on start up

I was installing a webcam and got to the point when the installation wizzard needed the computer to close and restart. on restart the computer gets as far as getting the windows start up music and logo, my antivirus logo comes on and i get my connect to network box come up, but no desktop or taskbar. The computer then stops at this point (although the the curser still moves and I can cntr-alt-del to shut down). The same happens every time i reboot now, even on safe boot. Can anyone help please?

Preferred Solution: desktop fails to load on start up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: desktop fails to load on start up

I'm assuming that you are running Windows XP.Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up Task Manager. On the File Menu select New Task (Run...).Type in:C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exeand click OK.This should start System Restore and allow you to go back to before things went wrong.

Hi,

I've got a problem and wonder if someone could help me out...

Windows XP Pro SP2 was working fine until I rebooted and now the desktop won't load. All the programs are accesable from the task manager>new task and I have run a AVG scan with no results. The screen picture loads, but nothing else. No start bar, no office toolbar, no icons, no anything.

I've scanned the forum for an answer and there was one result for desktop failing to load, but this did not seem applicable.

I am getting no error messages.

I have a very odd problem at the moment. As of recently my desktop fails to load anything except the wallpaper on any user.

Background:
I've recently acquired a Trojan.Vundo.H and have been attempting to get rid of it. I found it with Malwarebytes anti Mal-ware. I've attempted numerous times at deleting the files in both safe mode and regular mode, but the virus still comes back.

I then attempted to locate the files manually. There was a single .dll file and then three registry entries (I would post then but I'm in the middle of a full scan on my computer that is infect so I shall do so when that is finished). In either mode and using cmd all were unable to be deleted. I then ran a virus scan using Avira and it found the .dll file but was unable to delete it. After a system restart I went to check to see if the file was still there and it was. However to my surprise, Avira detected the infected .dll file and was able to remove it. I then rebooted my machine and noticed the .dll was gone but that still left the three registry entries. I began to scan with Malwarebytes anti Mal-ware and it said the .dll was still there, although after manually looking for the file I could not locate it.

So then I began to attempt to delete the three registry entries. I tried going in safe mode, editing the permissions, anything I could find online to do, but nothing worked. I then backed up the registry and set a system restore and then ran ccleaner.

After the restart is whe... Read more

Hi all

I am having a persistent problem with Windows 10 that I need help with

Just about every computer start takes two attempts to complete, the first start fails to load any desktop icons and just sits there with a spinning progress icon and nothing can be started. I have to do a Control/Alt/delete and select restart, which it does and then that time it all starts ok with no other issues all day long.

Anyone know how to fix this.

Thanks for any help

Every so often, maybe weeks apart, when I start up my B machine (PC with XP), it doesn't load and execute Windoze Explorer. Re-booting (manually) doesn't fix it.

So, I use Alt, Ctrl, Delete to bring up the Task List and I click on the Applications Tab, key in Explorer and click Run.

Explorer comes up, I have my usual desk top and everything seems to run OK.

I do a normal Turn Off every night and the next morning, odds are that Windoze (along with Explorer) will load and execute.

Then seemingly out of the blue, one day it doesn't load and execute Explorer and I have to manually (via the Task List) get it to execute Explorer so I can use the machine.

Two questions.

1. Why does it do that?
2. Is there any change I can make to prevent it in the future?

Thanks,

Answer:Explorer Fails To Load On Start-Up (Sometimes)

Kelly's Korner says this

Control/Alt/Delete - When the Windows Task Manager dialog box appears, select the File menu and then New Task (Run). When the Create New Task dialog box appears, type in Explorer and press the OK button. Windows Explorer should restart complete with the Start button.Click to expand...

It's similar to what you are doing but maybe it will correct the problem for good.

Hello I have XP pro on my computer. My computer reset itself. And now it wont restart.

Everytime I try to restart I get this message that windows did not start properly and I should select from 4 options
- safe mode
- safe mode with networking
- safe mode with command
- last known setting
- start normally

I tried all the options but nothing seems to work. It just goes back to this same screen again. Please help. I have tons of very valuable information on my computer.

Everything was fine. Next time pc was started it did the boot process and then a DOS screen appeared telling me that Windows did not start successfully and on lower part of screen it gives you 4 choices to start in safe mode and one choice to start at the last known configuration that worked. None of these choices come up. The computer just keeps restarting and then the screen comes up about Windows not starting successfully.

Thank you.

I wouldn't necessarily suspect the hard drive just yet. A repair/reinstall might be your best bet; since it crashed on an application installation, you may have some necessary files in limbo. Check this link for a comprehensive guide:

Hi Guys,

I have have this horror issue with my PC. I have even changed the hardware configuration and the problem still persists. My PC fails to display the desktop correctly after using highly RAM intensive applications, especially Chrome, but even after getting the chance to close it, or waiting for it to crash by itself, the PC is still not able to display correctly the GUI, even on other browser/applications as shown in the screenshots.

1st Hardware Config:
Intel Core2Quad Q9450
4x2GB DDR2
MSI P43 motherboard
Ati Radeon x550 video card

Software used, that seemed important for me to mention:
NOD32 v4.2
Comodo Firewall 5.12
Chrome
Screenshot Captor
SpeedFan

Other mentions:
Aero is disabled, because I've considered that it's one of the causes.

So, I've considered that it's a RAM issue or a videocard issue, and I've upgraded to:
Intel Core i7 3770k
4x8GB DDR3
Asus P8Z77V-LX motherboard
Intel GPU integrated in the 3770k CPU

The problem just happened 2 times on this rig also, and the RAM was not even coming close to it's maximum capacity of 31.7GB. It was at ~20GB's.
Also, this is another videocard(Intel's integrated GPU), so we can exclude the videocard from the suspects.

My suspects:

1) some desktop manager bugs, or other similar issue
2) video memory allocation - I'm still suspecting that it can be caused by the amount of RAM dedicated to the videocard, currently, I think that it is at 256MB.
3) some poorly designed components of Chrome/Scre... Read more

I am working on a desktop running Windows XP Home ed. sp3. It powers on, runs through the boot sequence but as soon as the Windows desktop loads, the machine powers down. I have opened the case blown out every nook and cranny, pulled the heatsink off, cleaned the bottom of the heat sink and the top of the cpu and applied a new thin layer of heat tranfer compound. I?ve been fighting this issue for 2 weeks. Can not say anything in particular caused it, had not installed anything major or new, just one day when I re-started the machine the entire desktop was gone. No icons, taskbar, start menu, etc. Also, rt. click on the desktop does nothing. Windows File Explorer does not work either

Machine ? Dell Inspiron E1705, 4GB Ram, 25GB free HDD space, Win XP Pro SP3

What Works? Task Mgr, File Explorer alternative (Free Commander). Am able to execute pgms. and apps using these. Essentially it seems that all else works except for explorer.exe and assoc. features.

Other symptoms, things I?ve tried, etc:

1. Tried executing explorer.exe but fails, doesn?t start.
2. In safe mode, everything works! Desktop, Start Menu, File Explorer, etc.
3. Desktop folders for all users exist with shortcuts
4. Replaced explorer.exe from a another XP SP3 machine, did not fix the problem.
5. Ran sfc.exe (full file check and auto-repair) in safe mode shortly after it first occurred, rebooted and fixed the problem for a while, but then after a couple restarts it failed again. Ran sfc.exe again but this time no joy.
6. Ran several malware scans (MBAM, MSE, SAS) nothing major found.
7. Also uninstalled MSE and installed a trial Bit Defender. Ran full scan, said it found and deleted 5 files but for the life of me couldn?t get a log or anything to come up so I could see WHAT the 5 files were. Also gave me a false positive for PaleMoon.exe and auto dele... Read more

I know it would be better if i could name them but can't remember the exact commands .. will look for the page again. One dealt with sfc /newscan (or such).

Really need to get this working again .. any ideas or pointers?

Tried the .bat file from AveYo's suggestion, lost my wifi connection and couldn't restart it, had to revert to a previous restore point.

Anyone know a fix for this?

I get the start button, a black desktop with no icons and a shadow of the task-bar. Hi oneerc,

I had this same kind of thing. But I have the ATI win 7 preview driver. I disabled the ATI external event viewer in services and unchecked the CCC from startup programs and it stopped. I don't know what the equivelant would be for those would with nvidia. If they have a nvidia beta driver for your card for 7, I might try it.

Please bear with me, this is my first post and I'm not very computer literate. I have a Packard Bell laptop running Windows 7. All seemed fine until I turned it on the other day and after the login screen I noticed that the windows blue opening screen had a message saying, Preparing your desktop........ this stayed for a few minutes and then it went to my desktop, but the screen was black and none of my usual icons were present. There were none of my usual icons in the taskbar either. My usual browser of choice is Chrome, but now there is only IE in the taskbar. I did a scan with Malwarebytes and it came up with JS/Redir, I removed this and restarted the laptop, but had the same problem. I am able to access the internet, but a strange thing is that the default fonts for things like emails have changed. Please help me get my usual desktop and familiar surroundings back!!!!!

Here is the list of the problems in order of which I noticed things going awry:

1. My Firefox browser will re-direct my google searches to a new Firefox window pop-up with "google-analytics" in its address bar, but would never finish loading the new popped-up window. Firefox would also re-direct and never finish loading my google searches by opening a new tab with a "directdlr.com/....." in its address bar.

2. Microsoft Office 2010 applications don't open, instead a "DW20.exe" and a "DWWin.exe" replicates itself an infinite number of times in my processes, maxing out my CPU.

3. My anti-virus applications (Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Security Essentials, avast!, malwarebytes) won't update, and therefore won't run or scan. Firefox also won't load various anti-virus sites, such as this message board.

4. Other applications crash directly upon opening them (VLC Media Player)

Solutions that I've tried:

1. Resetting my router. I'd read somewhere online that doing this would solve the problem. It did not.

2. Trying to restore from a restore point. I opened System Restore, but the restore points were all very recent and within the timeframe of infection.

3. Un-installing Microsoft Office 2010 and re-installing. System won't let me un-install.

Here are my scan reports:

Not long ago (a week and a half or so) I was playing Payday 2 and my computer froze, I turned off my computer to restart it and could not load my computer past a pre-loading windows black screen where the mouse was not showing. I then tried booting my computer in various ways (safe, with and without networking etc) and they worked, however I believe one of my drivers failing to load was the reason for my "Windows Normal" startup to fail. I eventually decided through, I then looked at using the system restore point function in order to hope for some success. The system restore function when I restored to; a week ago, two weeks ago, did not seem too alleviate my issue much, it did however allow me to load windows but almost immediately after using the machine for 2-5 minutes I would have a frozen screen again. I then eventually decided to just factory reset the machine out of desperation, the factory reset eventually happened successfully and I was able to load windows and login into my new user successfully, as I learnt that I had to reinstall my graphical drivers I then attempted to put in various CD's in in order to install these drivers, eventually when I figured out the order of CD's that I needed to install for my games to load properly, I then resumed my activities on my pc (such as gaming, browsing etc).

Flash forward to the second factory reset, this one happened due to a very similar freezing problem yet again, and again I decided to turn off my computer ... Read more

Hi, I've been at this for about 2 weeks now and still haven't gotten any closer to finding a solution, it seems that alot of people have experienced this problem by reading thru this forum and others and also results from google.

Here is my problem, I start my windows xp and it loads fine at first and then gets into loading the desktop and then nothing happens, but just before that a RUNDLL message pops up and says: rvbc1.dll: access is denied, you can click ok or the x on the top right corner, after that the menu dissapears and nothing happens. No desktop icons or start menu loads. Actually the start menu you can kinda see flash for about 1/2 a second.

I've tried many solutions, I'm in fact working with another guy from techsupportforums.com and haven't gotten anywhere with it. I've run hijackthis and combofix to no avail. I think a virus has locked out the system. I don't know what else to do or try. please help! I would like to get my Outlook files out of there so if things fail, i can at least keep my business running. thanks in advance for any help.

My Desktop, Taskbar and Start Menu do not load.. The computer on startup
gets to the username password screen fine and then fails to load Desktop,
Taskbar and Start Menu.

Using Ctrl-Alt-Del I can get Task Manager to load, and get online by getting Chrome to start. I?ve tried to start Explorer.exe from task manager and it doesn't start. Then I've downloaded it
and run it, and lo and behold, the Desktop, Taskbar and Start Menu all appear, but when I reboot they fail to load.

I've tried to boot using last good configuration to no avail. I've run
chkdsk and scannow to no avail. I use Avast free virus software and
Malwarebytes and have run full scans today.

I have a Windows XP disk for a Dell Latitude, but this computer is not a Dell Latitude, rather it is a desktop built by a guy in town. It does have an authentic version of Windows on it, and I could get a disk from him if need be.

I haev just fun the three things you recommend.

The computer is an HP Pavilion 724C with Windows xp Home edition, and McAfee Security (from Comcast).
When I start the PC, Windows starts as usual and gets to the choose User screen okay, but after the welcome screen (loading your Personal settings), the desktop background appears but no Icons or Start button or taskbar.

I'm unsure of what I did to cause this problem and I'm not very savvy on computers but you folks helped me out a while ago with a spyware problem, so I thought I'd try again before I give up and call HP or Microsoft.

Any and all help will be much appreciated

Answer:windows desktop doesnt load at start up

It's posssible that you could have a corrupt user profile.
Try this:
Boot into safe mode OR if you have more than one user account, try another desktop.
Start Menu/All Programs/Accessories.
System Tools/System Restore.
Choose a restore point just prior to when the issue began.

Your system will reboot, only after rebooting and getting on a desktop will you find out if the restore is successful.

I have been having multiple problems with my computer hanging on shut down and start up. I recently ran malware bytes and it came back with 1 item which I removed. About 10 minutes later my computer froze and I had to hard restart. Upon start up the screen was completely blank. The cursor moves but the desktop icons, task bar, and start up are all gone. control alt delete does not bring up the task manager. I loaded in safe mode to pull of the task manager and tried explorer.exe but nothing happened.

I have run diagnostics and nothing comes up. I have tried last good known configuration and still it just loads a background and cursor with nothing else.

I think there is some malware involved but I am pretty new to this so I thought I would try this. I went through the preparation guide and I am crossing my fingers that someone has a solution. Thank you!

This PC has been upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and now Desktop icons load slowly at start-up. It will only load desktop icons properly once when it first makes a new set of iconcache.db files.
This was at the first time on Win10 and now after the icon cache rebuilder from this website has been used.
The rebuilder works properly every time and makes the desktop load quickly at the next boot - once - but on all the following boots the PC returns to the slow one-by-one find the icon process (which also happened on Win7).
I think I have made sure that all iconcache*.* files are deleted from users/tony/appdata/local/iconcache.db and users/tony/appdata/local/microsoft/windows/explorer/iconcache_nnn.db where nnn is different for several files.
I have also removed the thumbnail caches.
Instinct suggests that not everything is being deleted and there is something left over from Win7.
I want to avoid a doing a reformat and a clean Win10 install if I can.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Desktop icons load slowly at start-up in Windows 10

The causes could be many.
Maybe your User profile has been corrupted. Log in as some other user and see.
Icon Cache file may be corrupted. You have already run our Thumbnail & icon cache rebuilder for Windows 10. It works the first time and then on subsequent restarts, your problem re-appears. Try to Rebuild Icon Cache, Clear Thumbnail cache manually and see if that helps.
If these Hidden files exists, delete them too:
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\IconCache.db
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\IconCache.db
Check your Startup programs. See if disabling them helps. Best to boot in clean boot state and see if problem continues. If it disappears, try to identify the offending 3rd-party startup.
You need to identify what could be causing this. Clean Boot State is the best way to go.
Create a system restore point first, before doing anything.
Hope something helps.

HI

I have an HP Pavilion 783 desktop computer. It has been in storage for a while but I decided to set it up as an additional computer to use at home. When I turn it on I get the following error message:
Winlogon.exe Application error
The instruction at "0x75978dc1" referenced memory at "0x0000000". The memory could not be read.

When I click on either option - OK or Cancel it tries to re start but I just get the same message, going through same loop each time until I force it to shut down by pressing and holding the on/off button.

I have tried running it in safe mode - still the same
I have tried turning everything off, unplugging it all and tried again - still the same.

any ideas?

many thanks in advance

Answer:[SOLVED] Unable to start/load HP Pavilion 783 desktop

Okay, after a few more attempts this now seems to have sorted itself out!?

BUT now I have all connected up again but cannot get on the internet? I am using ethernet cable and it says I'm connected but when I click on IE to open a page on the internet it states cannot find server.
I've done everything it has asked to me to on the settings etc but nothing seems to be working.

Any help - please?!!!

My parents alerted me to an issue their having with their computer yesterday and after doing a virus scan and basic troubling shooting (short of a system restore which might be my next option) I haven't been able to figure out the problem.

It's a five year old HP Pavillion running Windows XP, 1GB of ram with a intergrated graphics card so the system ram is actually listed as 900 something MB (will edit with correct specs), and an ADM processor (I believe, will edit when I can check the machine later today).

Anway, the issue is, on start up the taskbar and icons do not load right away, this has never happened before but now whenever the computer loads it loads to the desktop but only displays the wallpaper. The icon does not show that its busy or working, the pointer is displayed, I can access the task manager and run programs from there and then after a few minutes the taskbar and icons will load.

Answer:Delayed load of start menu and desktop icons

do you have the same issue in safe mode?

Not sure if this is the correct forum or not, but here goes.

If I turn on or restart my computer, the desktop icons and startup menu will not load for about 15-30 minutes. I used "Codestuff Starter" and only have 3 programs running at start up, so I doubt it is that. I am really not sure what the problem is, but would like to clear it up as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance,
Sean

Answer:Start Menu and Desktop Icons Take Forever to Load

go to start>run>msconfig click the last tab in msconfig and tell me how much programs are on the start up.

also do this too

list how much ram you have
how many processes on task manager you have
and how old you computer is

Whenever I start up my PC, either from shutting it down or restarting it, upon going to my desktop, it takes a moment for my desktop icons to load. Is that normal? It's for a few seconds, close to a minute, never a prolonged amount of time.

Answer:Desktop Icons Take a minute to load upon start up: is this normal?

Greetings, Randomtastic

Unfortunately, that is not normal.

Now, apart from the desktop icons delaying to appear, how is the overall performance of your operating system? Is it running smoothly or is it slow?

Laptop worked when folded and put away. Upon trying to log in, it was loading desktop, I clicked to get online and then it crashed and turned off.

When tried to restart, it never would load desktop again. Would get error messages after Welcome screen saying taskbar won't work, Dell support... not working, etc.

Tried starting in safe mode. Starts loading the drivers, etc. then freezes soon into the process.

When you try to start up normally, you get to login screen, welcome screen and then it goes to a plain screen with an error message: "Windows must be reinstalled to activate...insert CD....to begin reinstall.."

Tried Start up repair

No system restore points

No backup on computer to use.

Any ideas?

THanks

Slow booting.  Really slow booting.  Seems that using an SD card for ReadyBoot/ReadyBoost is causing the issue.  But why?
On investigation, this only started happening back in November, which coincides with the install of KB2685813 UMDF 1.11 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2685813).
Could be a bit buggy....

I'll uninstall the update and see if this solves the issue.

Hmm.  Now that is interesting.
In my System event log I was getting an NTFS error (57: Failed to flush tlog).  I didn't think it was from my HDD, so using diskpart, I ran a 'CLEAN ALL' on my SD card, then recreated the FS as exFAT (previously it was NTFS).
Seems to be working now, although I'm getting VDS Basic Provider errors (Unexpected failure.  Error code:
[email protected]) "which can be safely ignored" (re: KB979391).
This begs the question: if it can be safely ignored, why is it raised in the first place?
Boot time is also restored to an acceptable timescale.

I've been trying to fix my Windows 7 Desktop computer for a few weeks now with no luck. I tried Googling the problem and it seems hard to find people having the same issue. THe closest I could find anywhere on the Internet was the thread here that looks similar :

Windows 7.. no text.. no menus.. nothing

However reading the thread I couldn't see a clear resolution that applied to me. So a few weeks ago my startup crashed I think from having too many interrupted startups. I ran the Windows diagnostic tool so my computer could boot up again.

It boots up again. However now there the follow problems

- Start Menu won't launch. Basically you click it and it won't respond along with any items on taskbar
- No fonts show up below the icons on the desktop
- Can't use Windows explorer as the icons and fonts are ridiculously small. So I can't navaigate even through the file directory at all.
- And the system seems to take forever to load and seems like its always "working" and then eventually crashes and get blue screen.

However I can seem to run some of the programs on my desktop. I want to save against doing a fresh install since I have years of programs installed with a bunch of configurations that take me forever to remember the settings.

I tried a bunch of things. Trying to download stinger.exe and the command line (Via bootup to command line) and running that. Can't seem to do that as the program doesn't work. System Restore also doesn't work either. Just... Read more

Please help!!! Everything was fine on my pc. Next day after installing coupon printer which my system tried to block, getting to desktop with icons takes 20 minutes! I unistalled the coupon printer but Im only guessing this download caused the problem, not sure.) THEN the start menu is frozen for 5 minutes and every other click I make (eg on a program) takes another 5 min. Then some programs dont open. Can get online however and everything is fine online, but if I try to use start button while online its the same problem. Everything wokrs fine in Safe Mode but I can get online in safe mode. Defragged machine. Did disk error check. No errors. Checked for spyware, etc in several programs including Spybot and pc is clean! What could it be?!!! When I go into Safe mode all these System32 Drivers appear on screen. Could that be the problem? Just guessing.

Also received an alert on desktop saying Active Desktop Recovery. When I clicked on "restore my active desktop" a window appeared: "Internet Explorer Script Error"
Line:65 Char:1 Error: Object doesnt support this action Code: 0
and then a URL. Dont know if this is part of the problem or not.

I am using Intel i3-530 on Intel DH55TC Motherboard. The motherboard supports RAM with highest frequency of 1333MHz. However, I was told that using a higher speed RAM wouldn't hurt the system. So, today I bought a Corsair Vengeance 4GB 1600MHz RAM. The RAM is detected in BIOS, but OSes fail to boot after that. Even Ubuntu throws Kernel panic error while booting. Could anyone help me with the BIOS settings required to run this memory stick?

Answer:OS fails to load when using new RAM

Hello Mycroft mate as a general rule running a higher frequency RAM stick in a machine that runs that only supports the lower one the frequency will revert to the frequency of the new stick will be maxed to what frequency your machine will support. So I think whoever told you could run a higher frequency RAM stick in the machine should have known better and to get you to check out the supported RAM speed before you went out and got the new RAM.
If possible I would get the supplier to change it for 1333 (there really isn't much to be gained from 1600) and the extra RAM will still make a difference to your machine simply because the system has more to use and therefore less bottle knecking - in other words the CPU can load more faster if it has more empty RAM available.

ie Tip a bucket of water through a 1 inch outlet funnel into another bucket and it fills quite nicely in say 5 minutes - now take a funnel with a 10 inch outlet and the second bucket fills in no time at all - the first bucket is the CPU and the second bucket the RAM the difference being there is more channels for the data to flow through even though it might be the slower speed RAM

You can see from this Intel? Desktop Board DH55TC the board only supports 1333 max - you can install a faster RAM stick but why bother?

So for example the 1600 you have put in should only run at 1333 if the machine specs say max 1333. The other problem could be that the new RAM stick is bad.

To see about RAM this might gi... Read more

I'm trying to fix a Lenovo 3000 N200 Model 0769 with a pentium dual core processor, a WD 160Gb #WD1600BEVS-08RS hard drive, and 2Gb RAM running Windows XP sp3 Home.  Could not find the restore CD, but have a copy of the OS on CD.A few months ago, the system crashed while I was using the computer and would begin this endless loop of trying to restart windows and then failing.  I suspected a failing HD, so I tried to put the drive into an external enclosure and plug it into my desktop PC.  It was not seeing the drive, so I bought a tested one (same model) from the internet.  Later, I was successful in bringing the OS back up again and immediately began copying files to a backup drive.  Every so often, while copying image and video files, the OS would crash again and I'd restart successfully. I suspected corrupt files or bad HD sectors.  Eventually, it quit loading Windows altogether.  I received the purchased replacement drive, however, when I plugged it into the laptop, it didn't seem to find it and I guessed that it had not been formatted yet.I took it into work where we publish a software database and plugged it into the Windows 7's mother board SATA plug and successfully detected and formatted the new drive.  I also plugged in the "failing" drive, which it detected  and ran a scan on it, automatically detecting and fixing any bad sectors.  It seemed to complete successfully and when I plugged th... Answer:Windows Xp Fails To Load.

I have this issue every once and a while as well and can't seem to figure the problem out.
My issue is a little different though, my PC will lock up, and when I restart it'll load Windows, and then just go to a black screen like you described.
If I let it sit for 10-15 minutes it'll BSOD and restart and work fine though.
Have you tried letting it sit?

I had this window pop up whenever I shut down my computer.

dwwin.exe fails to load because Windows is shuttng down.

Something like that, heh. Now what can I do with this?

Answer:dwwin.exe fails to load??

As an initial step,go into msconfig/Start up and uncheck everything except the Firewall/AV.

If the error stops, then one of those start up programs is the cause.

If that doesn`t work -

See Norms posts here - HERE

"Had this problem, here is what I did:

Open regedit, go to:
HKLM_SOFTWARE_MICROSOFT_WINDOWS_CURRENT VERSION_RUN

If you have a logitech input device, or a Gravis gamepad input device, you need to
modify the value of the registry key so that the application starts up in *belownormal*
processor priority.

Example:
start /belownormal c:\windows\system32\Grxp4exe.exe /init

"start /belownormal" is the addition you will make to the beginning of the line..."

You`ll have to read the thread to find the exact keys you need.

WIN 7 X 64 fails when trying to load MS updates. I see lots of users have the same problem and have tried many of the suggestions that I found on the forum. I have Malwarebytes and MS essentials installed.

Security updates for MS.NET are successful as are Definitions for MSE, the Bing Bar updates and even updates for Office 2010 (even though it is not loaded on my computer) but none of the Security Updates for Win7 x64 based systems will load. Every bootup for weeks it says ? you have 37-40 updates? If I tell it not to update, sometimes, somehow, it does it any way and in the middle of my word processing a box pops up that is counting down to a reboot. If I don?t walk away it just shuts down in the middle of my typing.

If I ignore the ?updates available? it changes my log off box from ?shut down? to ?load updates and shut down?. If I don?t pay close attention and change the default back to ?shut down? each time I get stuck loading all the same updates that didn?t load the day before. Dirty pool.

Ill try to make a long story short. Bought a Dell Precision 470 that was two years old from my ex boss. I ran the computer the whole time and it never once gave me a single problem. Upon receiving the computer i found that he ran a few registry deleting programs and because i know he doesn't know how to do anything i feared he did something wrong.

I in turn decided to format the computer. I am running a RAID 1 set-up (mirror) on two 250GB drives. I format the raid array first and rebuild the array then install OS which involves obviously formatting the hard drive and then install drivers reboot then what software pleases me.

The software i run is pretty basic, office 2003, illustrator, photoshop, itunes, mozilla, norton and a software and driver for my business which happens to be sign making. Now the only software thats different on there is the signmaking stuff. We use to run a Prog called signlab and now i use something else. apart from that the general use of the computer is about the same as it was the two years previous.

Every 4-6 weeks the computer decides to stop loading. Always after being shut down normal and properly. It will get to the Windows preloader screen where the three boxes just sit there and slide back and forth over and over essentially until i turn the box off. I can't for the life of me figure this out. the hard drive and information is completely in tact, what seems to be missing is the os software. for the longest time i was not able to g... Read more

I just recently gave my computer I had to my 15 year old sister. Iv'e had this system for four years and this has never happened to me before. The day after I gave it to her, she told me that it would not load. It gets all the way to the windows XP loading screen with the small green dots moving at the bottom then the dots just stop moving. The hard drive light is still lit up like its doing something but after an hour or so of leaving it on like that it was still frozen. I was able to load it up in safe mode and remove any adware/spyware on it and get a hijack this log. I'm not sure what it is she does on it but in all the time iv'e had the machine its never done this before.

For the last 2 days I cannot get my Youtube channel to load properly. It seems to stick on something called "s.ytimg.com". Is anyone else having this trouble at the moment?

As 67 people have looked at this but not one has replied, even to tell me that I'm an idiot, I feel rather ignored on what is my first outing on this forum. Perhaps my question is too banal.

Anyway, in the hope of receiving some sort of response here's a more detailed description of the problem:

I use Firefox with Noscript and Ad Block Plus.

I have a 3 mobile broadband connection (which has worked well enough since I got it) and before Friday I had no problems with Youtube.

When I try to load my channel on Youtube everything zips along nicely until it comes to "transferring data from s.ytimg.com". Then it just hangs. And Hangs. I have left it for 40 minutes or so and nothing has moved.

If I selectively disable "ytimg.com" in Noscript everything loads but there is no video to play.

Evidently s.ytimg.com is a perennial nuisance because it is mentioned in many other forums. Solutions suggested include putting extra lines in the hosts file (tried it. No good). Removing lines from the host file (couldn't because the line was not there) and changing DNS server.

Does anyone here have any new wheeze to suggest?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, I am new here.

In fact, perhaps there should be a section just for s.ytimg.com and its attendant miseries.... Read more

Hello. I have Red Hat Linux and Windows XP on different partitions on my Dell. I went to login to Windows the other day, and after I selected Windows it gave me a black screen saying windows failed to load. It had options of starting in safe mode, starting from last known configuration or starting normally. Regardless of what you press, the Windows XP screen comes up like its loading, then after a few second it goes to a blue screen saying unmountable_boot_volume. It says to remove any hardware that I recently added, but I haven't added anything. My sister had been using the computer while I was gone, and I don't know what to do now. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi, Everyone,
How are you? I have been running Windows XP, Service Pack 2 on my computer for several years now. Last night, my computer froze for the first time in over half a year, so I restarted it and nothing seemed to be wrong. After about 15 minutes of using it, it froze once again. After restarting it the second time, however, it showed me the screen that says I could choose to restart in the "Last Known Good Configuration," in "Safe Mode, or to "Start Windows Normally."

If I chose the non-Safe Mode options, it would start to load Windows (with the Windows XP screen and the blue bar running under it), and then restart itself when the blue bar runs for the third time. For the Safe Mode options, it would load partway and then restart again.

Can I do something to fix this? Is this a hard drive problem? I tried unplugging everything except for my monitor and hard drive, but the problem was still there. Please help! I am using a library computer to type this and will wait until I can find a resolution, then go home and try it.

Thank you in advance!

I just came home for christmas and my parents showed me that their computer is failing to boot.

It posts normally, runs the windows splash screen, and then comes up to a black screen with a mouse cursor and hourglass, then 30 seconds later to just a mouse cursor - it can sit for an hour and never loads anything else. In safe mode, any type, it does the same thing but with the version number across the top and 'safe mode' in each corner.

In any mode there is no taskbar and no response from the start button, right clicking or ctrl+alt+del

I have tried, after making a backup of course, replacing explorer.exe and taskman.exe as well as the entire system and system32 folders(except config in system32 which is protected). I have loaded the hard drive in my own computer and it does the same thing. I ran scandisk on it while it was in my windows pc and it didn't tell me anything. The drive is divided into 3 partitions and I only scanned the C drive.

This is my parents computer and I do not have a hardware listing, it is relatively new but not high end, I can look for model numbers on anything that is relevant.

I have slaved the drive into another computer and backed up any data, I am just trying to avoid a full reformat and having to reinstall all the software.

any thoughts?

Hello again - this place worked last time so I thought I would try again... here is my problem:I use a computer designed for a visually impaired person. The PC (running XP Professional) automatically loads JAWS For Windows (a program (JFW) which 'reads' what is going on (web pages, Word documents, keystrokes) so she can tell what is happening) which appears to run normally. HOWEVER when OPENBOOK (a Text scanning/'reading' program) is loaded, I get errors regarding SSILEXE.EXE not being able to load, which is a speech synthesizer designed to coordinate bothw JFW and OPENBOOK so they can 'talk' without both talking at once. I followed Freedom Scientific's directions (they are the makers of both these programs) to re-expand the AUTOEXEC.NT, CONFIG.NT and COMMAND.COM files from the Windos master disk to the C:\windows\system32\ directory, but the problem keeps coming back. (The only other error message I remember is something about not being able to "load a 16-bit program" or something like that.)Things I have noticed: a Sheild (looks like a MS Update shield) which says 'Downloading Updates 0%' (but I don't think it's really doing that) that pops up when I start Windows, JAWS runs fine, but trying to open OPEN BOOK takes a LONG time to load (and I get the error message about the speech synthesizer not being able to load) - if I try to load OPENBOOK while Norton Protection Center is checking the system this REALLY bogs down. I am wondering if runnning Nort... Read more

My copy of Flight Sim loaded OK under Win XP but under Win 7 in same machine doesn't. Other software loads as it should but the Flight Sim DVD just spins, with the read light and the HD light flickering away indefinitely. I have tried manually via two set-up files I can see in Explorer but to no avail. The DVD looks OK physically. Anyone suggest what else I can try.

Answer:Flight Sim X fails to load

Not sure if this is your problem, but it could well be. FSX can only be used on one machine, it checks its self with Microsoft. A new OS may be giving the wrong info. In which case you might need to contact Microsoft by phone. You may find more info at the following forums:- click here click hereI used to use FS9 but found my machine would not cope with FSX, so gave up on it. When I buy another PC then I might try again.FSXs programming was too far ahead of hardware capabilities at the time.

Answer:XP FAILS TO INITIALISE ON 1ST LOAD

Start the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). What is displayed depends on the BIOS manufacturer. Some computers display a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS, while others may not display any indication that this process is happening. As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. NOTE: If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers will generate a "keyboard error" message. Please restart and try again. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select create boot log. Then Start Normally...after the boot fails follow the advice above and choose Safe Mode Have a look at th bootlog.txt file on the C drive the final entries are nomally the fail. My formerly cool computer continues to tick me off! I've been having a hardware problem, which I've traced to the video card slot, and am currently troubleshooting. The problem will cause my computer to completely fail to start - BIOS codes and all that. Working on it though, this isn't my question.

An unrelated problem has cropped up, though, perhaps related to problems I posted earlier...

Usually (but not always) after reboot, I'll get an error that msgina.dll failed to load. It suggests copying over a new one. I've done that, and it still fails to load on the first cold boot, but loads on reboot.

Anybody here seen this before, and can offer suggestions?

(on a side note, what do you use - besides an eraser - to clean the contacts on your AGP or PCI boards?)

Answer:msgina.dll fails to load

The file has something to do with Winlogon. Look HERE for some info on this. Also, a search of MSGINA on GOOGLE provided a wealth of info on why you are having your problem.

To clean contacts, I use Ethanol obtainable from a electronics shop, maybe Radio Shack It's the oils from your hands etc etc that can cause contacts to erode.

Hello:

Let me begin by stating that I will donate $100 to Tech Support Guy if someone is able to *successfully* solve my problem.

First, some general info on my computer:
* Dell Latitude D510 Notebook (purcahsed in January of 2006)
* Windows XP Home - SP2
* 2GB RAM
* 80GB 5400RPM HDD
* Pentium M Dothan, 1.86GHZ, 2 MEGB

Second, a little background on the events leading to the problem:
* I'm a heavy Internet user (about 16 hours per day of blogging, social media stuff, web based email, downloading music, files, video, etc.). Typically, I leave my computer continually running for several days at a time. Last week (Jan 08), I rebooted my system after about 3 days of continual use and this is what happened, and is still happening (step by step guide)

1) I turn on my computer and the computer begins to boot normally, from the Dell logo to the Windows XP logo
2) Once the Blue Welcome Screen appears, I see the following error message:
WLKeeper.exe - Application Error The Instruction at "0x00401490" referenced memory at "0x9a3412be". The memory could not be "written".
3) If I click cancel, the OS continues to load, even producing Microsoft's trademark startup sound and displaying the default background screen of the fields and mountains against a blue sky.
4) However, as the programs are loading and the explorer bar at the bottom of the screen loads, I receive a second error message stating:

Answer:Windows xp fails to load

Huh?

Okay first, what is the exact spelling of the file it is failing to load, and what is the exact text of the error message? At what point in the installation process does this happen.

One reason installs fail is because the CD is scratched, dirty, etc... Sometimes making a copy of a damaged disk will work. The copying process "fixes" the bad data before it gets burned to the new disk.

Also, a bad optical drive will mis-read and corrupt data during an install. Changing out the optical drive might fix the problem.

I have been trying to pinpoint this problem for a little shy of a week now. I have a custom built desktop which was running windows 7 Ultimate when it started to have troubles shutting down and booting up. It would fail to shut down and the windows start up would either get stuck for awhile(on the screen that is showing the logo) or it would not start up at all. Hoping that it would solve the problem I reinstalled windows and am now running windows 7 Professional but the problem is still not fixed, It still gets stuck on the start up Just wondering if anyone could help me find the cause of this problem as it is very frustrating. My computer specs are: EVGA 123-YW-E175-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI FTW ATX Intel Motherboard, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor, EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+ Graphics card, Rosewill RX630-S-B 630W PFC.

Any help would be great. To add, it will also not start in safe mode and the cd/dvd drive does not always read discs, this leads me to believe it is a motherboard problem.

The only thing on the screen is the mouse icon and that's it. No wizard, no next, nothing. When I tried doing other options, it repeats the F9 proces s over and ends up leaving me at the bluish and greenish abstract screen again. If someone could PLEASE tell me how to resolve this problem I would gladly appreciate it. Thank you.

The title says it all. This has been an ongoing problem that I've kind of been putting off to the side, and it should probably be addressed. Whenever my computer informs me that I have an update, I click the little icon and it brings up the windows update page... and I wait. Then it gives me the message "This page failed to load". any solutions?

This is going to be long and drawn out, but this is killing me and maybe you can help me.

I work in a business environment. I have network and local machine administrator rights. Meaning, I have full control of everything. I ran into a problem a number of months ago where my Devices and Printers screen would appear, but then it would never load the devices. here is a screenshot of what happens.

Now I searched the net for some answers and I found an article that says that people have this problem when the Bluetooth service is not running. Well I started mine and the same thing happens. I logged into a different user i created on the same machine, and initially the Window comes up fine, but later on it does the same thing.

This happens both on a Windows 7 32 bit setup and a Win 7 64 bit setup.

Well, I finally found the source of the problem, at least as far as I'm concerned. We use McAfee Encryption for PC and Encryption for Files and Folders. It's only when I install the latter of the two that the issue occurs. The latter of the two btw, is a policy that forces encryption on any USB storage device inserted to the PC. So you are thinking "Great, report it to McAfee." Problem is, I did, and they tried to replicate the situation and they cannot. We ran down the list of options that we both had running and they were and are identical.

So either at this point I'm thinking one of the two is occurring.

1. McAfee has not ran into this problem and my report... Read more

I just upgraded to Windows Vista 64 over the weekend as a clean install. I ran Windows Update and got everything installed fine. However, shortly after Windows Update failed to open when I clicked the icon. I see a window start to open on the desktop and then disappear. No errors show up. If I go into the Control Panel->Security and click "Turn Automatic Updating On or Off" I receive the following error: Windows cannot find 'shell:::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-BEB064C98683}\10\::{36eef7db-88ad-4e81...\pageSettings'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Running Vista OS and have made no changes that I am aware of. When I click the AOL icon I get the spinning circle for about 10 seconds and then nothing happens. Doesn't matter which shortcut I try, same result. Have tried reinstalling the AOL software after deleting the old and removing it from the registry, After reinstall, the welcome page loads and I'm able to sign on to AOL but after about 10 seconds the website disappears and I get the message that AOL is trying to reconnect but after clicking OK, it disappears and thats all. If I try to click on the AOL icon again, it doesn't load just like before. Have tried the obvious stuff like restarting the PC to no avail. This happened about a year ago and after several weeks it seemed to correct itself.Any ideas?Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2

Just installed Win 10.

Now Eudora 7 fails immediately with error message
The directory specified in the command line
Files
doesn't exist or is not writable.
I have no idea what this means or where to begin with this.

This despite Win 10 crowing upon completion of installation that "all your files are exactly where you left them."

I have 1511 installed and hit the issue with a couple of updates not installing so I can't install the Anniversary and follow-on upgrades.
Has anyone used the Media creation tool, downloaded the Win 10 Home/Pro x64 v.1607 to a USB stick, and then performed an in-place upgrade/repair.
Was it successful?
To boot from the usb should I change the bios for usb first, or just load within win 10 , from the usb drive. When should I remove the stick?
Sorry for so many questions --- fairly new at this
Appreciate all help
Larimar

Answer:Upgrade fails for win 10 1511 --- load from usb ?

Nope, neither update to AU, nor upgrade install from ISO worked for me - did a clean install of AU, installed apps and copied user files from mounted backup.

I did run WU thereafter sucessfully and drivers got installed, but since have only installed updates manually - all sucessfully. (with WU update blocked in firewall)

I have Vista Premium installed as the upgrade from Hp since I bought this computer right before the Vista release. It is a Hp Pavilion a1637c, 3GB memory, 500 GB WD Hard Drive, AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4200. I was having problems when burning ANYTHING to DVD's or CD's. The DVD/CD RW stops responding, locking up the computer. Only thing to do is push the power button to restart. Now when I try to restart, it appears to be fully loaded but won't open any folders or the internet. The circle just keeps going around and all I can do is hit the button again to restart. To get it to fully load, I have to go into Safe Mode and do a System Restore. What can be causing this?

Answer:Vista fails to load completely

What burning program do you use? Have you tried a different one?

Alright I have read so many threads and posts trying to figure this one out.
I have AoK and it runs fine.
I have AoC and I can rarely get it to load. The only time it loads is if sometimes I load AoK first then immediately load AoC.
I have played around with every possibility on the compatibility mode and resolution and I still get the same result. AoK does not need to use the compatibility mode at all.

When I go to load AoC I receive,
"Age of Empires II Expansion has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

It does not notify me. It works on my laptop which has windows 8.1
I have reinstalled both AoK and AoC many times clean.
I have tried both minimal and maximum on installing the game.

Please Help!

Thank you,

BJ
