Radeon 8500 and Game Lock Ups

Question: Radeon 8500 and Game Lock Ups

My Radeon 8500 128M DDR has a real aversion to playing any games. It starts off well enough but anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes later the whole system just freezes.I'm running Win XP Pro and have updated all relevant drivers as best possible. Can Anyone help out?

Preferred Solution: Radeon 8500 and Game Lock Ups

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I play my games I find that I get less lag and less problems with the 8500 then my 9600.. Mind you a 8500 was bought second hand..

The computer with the 9600 haves better and more of Ram, cpu, and motherboard a newer model..
Sence I started to play Wow my 9600 is acting up with the Gamma. Every other game that I do play my gamma keeps reseting on me.. Even on my desktop. It gets realy dark..

How could this make sence, that a old used up 8500 works better then a newer 9600? Could it be my powersupply? 350W

Answer:Is Radeon 8500 better then Radeon 9600?

Hi Ludwig,
The 9600 is an AGP 8x, DirectX 9.0 videocard.

The 8500 is a DirectX 8.0(8.1) videocard and therefore is limited in support when games query features.

Running a game on the 8500 may be a totally different game on a 9600, as the 9600 can enable much more detail, higher pixel/vertex shader support and a plethora of other advanced features. For this reason, even a beefier system may perform lesser than a slower system with an 8500. It's because many of the newer DirectX 9.0 features also take a toll on the CPU/memory and mainboard performance.

As far as Gamma goes- this would suggest something may be misconfigured with your installation of the ATI drivers on the 9600, or that system may have left-over components from previous drivers. This is pretty easy to have happen. I'd recommend obtaining Driver Cleaner Pro at www.drivercleaner.net. Install this, run it's Live Update to get the latest cleaners... but don't run it. Use the Control Panel/Add-Remove programs and uninstall ALL ATI drivers here first.. then reboot in safe mode and run Driver Cleaner Pro (safe mode/administrator).. After this, in normal mode again, try the latest drivers from ATI.

So i bought this saphire radeon 8500 le 64 mb version off of allstarshop.com for a computer i was building. i had problems with the video of the system and i started messing around with all kinds of settings bios jumpers the works. i even replaced the graphics card with a tnt2 that my friend gave me. it was really stupid of me to do and when i figured out the problem was the mother board drivers were outdated and i updated them the video was perfect all the drivers worked it was great. then when i tried to put the 8500 back in and install its drivers i got an error message when i booted up saying card not recognized or invaled video driver. so i tried to put the 8500 into another computer and it woulldnt even boot up. so i am thinking that it might be a problem with a corrupt video bios or something of that nature. it seems that when i use that card in that particular machine it will boot up and show video but its like it is when it first boots into windows for the first time low res low refresh basically really slow graphics. my best guess is the bios is messed up so the card isnt being recognized properly but i cant find the bios for that card anywhere. i was wondering if someone would put in thier imput to the situation and maybe thier diagnoses. thanks so much.

Answer:Help with radeon 8500

IMO,,Try the Radeon in a more "User Freindly" OS like win98se.
with winXP if you try swapping to another Chipset, thing get real weird.
Also try a "Repare Install" of XP if that is the OS you are using.
i saw something in your post that i myself came across "i even replaced the graphics card with a tnt2 that my friend gave me"
What was your Original Cipset?

I'm creating this thread in correlation to the news post I made on the homepage...

I ask you this question because I'm having stability problems with my Radeon 8500, but if I back the core clock off 15mhz from standard speed (275) it's stable again...

So what I want to create is a database of how on averge high you can O/C a ATI Radeon 8500...

If you could post your speeds in this thread in the forum it would be great, you may also e-mail them to me and I'll put them up there for you...

Thanks in advance.Click to expand...

If you are so kind as to post your results please also post what the default speed of your card is (i.e. 230/230, 250/250 or 275/275mhz)

And also what brand and exact name it is of, i.e. mine is a "Built By ATI" Retail ATI Radeon 8500 64MB with a clock of 275/275mhz...

And lastly what cooling you have for it (read further down for more details)

The best method I have found to test the stability of my ATI card has been to only run the "Point Sprites" test in 3dmark2001 with "looping" and "disable title screens between tests" selected...

A little background on what sort of cooling my ATI card gets, I have the case cover of but since I'm watercooling there are no fans directly circulating air onto my ATI card, I tried with first removing all PCI expansion cards this only made the card pass about five more tests for a toltal of ten (though it could also crash a... Answer:How far have you OC:ed your ATI Radeon 8500?

295/295, with no extra cooling. It lasts a good 4 hours before becoming unstable during intense gaming. Otherwise, it's always stable.

High instensity RTCW sessions seem to heat it up a little too much for it's teeny fan to handle Those new 6037 drivers are pretty good. Not a HUGE improvement, but an improvement nonetheless. (couple more fps it seems in RTCW)

Hi i want to know is there are performance diferences with these cards, cuz i know there are tech diferences, but at last what a gamer whants to know if is going to give more fps in games.

thanks =)

ps: i know the gf4 gives more fps but is it worth it?

Answer:IS the radeon 8500, better, than gf3 or gf4?

I think the GF4 is above and beyond the GF3 and the ATi Radeon 8500. Between the GF3 and the Ati its a toss up. Personally I go with the Gf3 because of Nvidia's excellent driver support. They are both very fast cards with excellent imaging. I feel that Nvidia's AA is better than Ati's.

Answer:best driver for radeon 8500 LE

Looks like you just click on the Display driver link and it installs with prompts: http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/...RADEON+8500LE&eula=&choice=agree&cmdNext=Next

If you would feel more comfortable starting with the page where you select your OS and card start from here: http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

I guess I missed a previous thread you assume everyone is familiar with, so I cant make any suggestions other than say that is the driver ATI says is the current one for your card and OS.

I have had this problem through 2 motherboards. I have a brand new (ok, year old, but unused) ATI Radeon 8500 LE that I can not get to work to save my life. When I 1st got it and had problems with it I contacted ATI tech support and after following their suggestions with no success I sent it in for repair. They told me it tested just fine, but sent me a known good board as a replacement. Same problems. I figured it may be something about my system, so I put it away until I made an upgrade. I just replaced my motherboard with an MSI KM2M Combo-L (hey it was cheap) and tried the video card with the new m/b to see if it made a difference. No luck. Not a WinXP driver problem because it won't even allow me to view my bios settings for more than a minute before the screen totally corrupts. Just for reference I am using an Athlon XP 1700. Any ideas?

Answer:ATI Radeon 8500 LE won't work

Just poking here, but do you have a modem installed on that mobo? If so, try removing the video card, drivers and all, then remove the modem and any drivers that are installed, and then pull the plug, physically remove both of the cards, replacing ONLY the video card for now. If all boots up ok try loading the drivers for the vid card then. If that goes ok then try the modem. There may be another issue involved, but with the problems modems can cause, I would take a shot and at least eliminate it as a resource conflict of some kind.

Good Luck!

So I recently purchased the new Windows 7 home edition and installed it on my other two laptops. This was very quick and easy, however on my desktop I'm having one huge issue. I can't find drivers for my ATI Radeon 8500 video card. Since I play a lot of games it's pretty much useless at this point. I was wondering if there was anyone else who has had and has resolved this problem, or if there is another way for me to fix this issue. Thanks

Answer:ATI Radeon 8500 Drivers!?

There were never any Vista drivers for the 8000 series ATI cards either as will not support the Aero interface, you can install the XP drivers by right clicking on the Setup.exe file and running in compatibility mode(providing it's the 32bit version of Win7).

Whats the difference between a ATI Radeon 8500 LE and a
ATI Radeon 8500 ?
What does the "LE" mean and which is better?
Thanks.

Answer:ATI Radeon 8500 Question.

the 8500 LE is the "limited" version some of the features of the 8500 are disabled on the LE version. they are disabled by the bios and there are bios's flashes that can renable those features if your brave enough to risk trashing your card if the bios flash goes bad.

OK, everything was going well, I had just installed the ATI drivers, they were working perfect. Then I trashed my computer using the clean drive utilities in the C: drive utilities. If you red my posts in the software forum you know all about it.

Anyhow, I'm almost back to where I started, only the drivers won't install anymore. Actually, they install just fine, but I can't get the side functions like the TV to work.

So, should I

A>Remove all ATI software
B>Use Restore point.
C>Use the ATI uninstall software.
D>Other.

Before I experiment I wanted to get some other points of view.

Answer:Radeon AIW 8500 question

I tried option B first, no go.

Then I tried option A, so so

Then I tried option C, by this time my fustration was such I'm deleting .ini files and anything else associated with ATI. I may have damaged my OS, no obvious symptoms yet. Since I have it working it is technically a victory, so I may end up doing a reinstall just in case. Evidently the restore points don't remove everything, which was the root of my problem.

I am having problems with my brand spanking new ATI RADEON 8500 OEM card. I ordered it from newegg.com.

The main problem is that when I go to the Display Properties on my computer every time I click on the Settings tab my screen goes black and a flashing underscore line appears(looks like a DOS prompt). I cannot get out without rebooting. I have been unable to solve this problem.

The second problem is that outside of this I see no real performance improvement over my now-dead Voodoo3 2000. Playing Counter-Strike using Direct3D at 1024x768 yielded around 28-34 fps during combat. Not exactly what I was expecting when I see around 200 fps on these benchmarks for Quake3 ( I know there are differences but 1/8 ?).

I have gone through the uninstall, install route and using both the drivers it was shipped with and the 7206. Here is my computer specs(I just included the important ones)

PIII 450
128 MB 100 Mhz RAM
I have an Abit motherboard, I "think" a BX6ATI RADEON 8500 OEM running 7206 drivers
Thanks for any help y'all can suggest.

Probably not much help but have you reinstalled directx since installing the card and drivers.

if you go to start/run/type dxdiag and press enter

go to the display tab, are directdraw accel/direct3d accel/agp texture acceleration enabled, can you run the tests sucessfully.

I'm sorry if I am posting this in the wrong spot but I am new here. I have a Radeon 8500 128mb card in a gigabyte 4xagp dual athlon mp 2200+ server board running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise. My problem is that the 8500 works fine...only when the drivers are not installed. The moment I install drivers and turn hardware acceleration up even a little I get what looks like the entire screen to be artifacting.

I've tried the newest omega drivers as well as the regular ATI drivers. I've also tried the omega 2355's with no luck. I've reseated the card and used canned air to clean it out as well. I tried it in a different computer but they were both amd's...I haven't gotten a chance to test it in a pentium system but i don't think thats the problem.

And for some reason I can't post links to pics of my problem...any help with that would be great too.

My specs:
Celeron 1200 Mhz
Gigabyte 6VA mobo (via apollo pro chipset)
512 MB ram
ESS soundcard
Windows Me

A couple of weeks ago I replaced my Geforce 256 by a Geforce 4mx. But as several people advised me I brought it back and bought a Radeon 8500 instead. But after I had built it in I didn`t get a significant performance boost. I got about 30 FPS in JK2 timedemo with both Geforce4mx and Radeon 8500 and about 6000 marks in 3Dmark 99 max also with both cards (vsynch off). In 3Dmark 2001 SE I get about 5100 marks with the Radeon (I dont know about the Geforce 4mx). What could be the problem or is this all the performance I can expect from a Radeon 8500 and a Celeron 1,2 ?

Answer:Geforce 4mx = Radeon 8500 ?

Indeed it might be the Celeron the culprit in this equation. Do you know the exact type of Radeon 8500 you have bought ? What drivers are you running ? There are OEM versions circulating with lower specs then the Original Radeon 8500.

Radeon 8500 -> 275 mhz Core / 550 mhz DDRam
Radeon 8500 LE -> 250 mhz Core / 500 mhz DDRam
Radeon 8500 LELE ->225 mhz Core / 450 mhz DDRam

I haven't tested a GF4MX but I've installed 2 Radeon 8500 cards & I must say they worked very well ( granted they were running on AthlonXPs ).

Have you tryed any other games ?

Building a new computer and Im on a strict budget. Im limiting the video card to $100. I found an 8500 125mb card for $99. I had a Rage Fury in my first computer and ATI really sucked when it came to drivers but Ive been reading thet they have gotten it together in that area. I was looking at gForce 3 cards but they seem to have gone up in price. The Xabre 400 Pro with 128mb is $100 and looks good but Im hesitant to try a new product. Thanks

Answer:Thoughts on Radeon 8500????

I love mine.

I'd say go for it, it's really a nice card and blows any equivalent-priced GF3 out of the water.

I'd also say stick with nVIDIA or ATi, just for the sake of compatibility.

Hi guys

You may remember that I got myself a pretty 9800 Pro a couple of weeks ago. I then decided to replace the GF2 MX in the PC of my girlfriend by the one I had before in my PC, a Radeon 8500.

In my PC it worked absolutely without any trouble. The GF2 MX worked fine in her PC also.

Now that I have pu the 8500 in her PC, it won't work any more.
She has a *cough*Packard Bell*cough* computer which is not that bad ( Athlon XP 1600+ ).

If I use the 4.7 or 4.6 catalyst drivers, I can't even go past the XP loading screen. After it switches to the resolution I have set (1280x1024 on a 19" monitor), it goes black with some color pixels scattered there and everywhere.

What I don't understand is that I also have the same monitor and was using the same resolution on my PC without any trouble, but I had 2000, not XP.

I tried to install the 4.5 cats also. With those I can boot up, but eventually after like 20 minutes the VPU recover thing says the GPU has crashed and the display is switching to software and 16 bits.

I also tried to do a clean XP install (new HDD) and it's absolutely the same.

I have no clue of what I can do with that stuff .... Try alternate drivers ? (DNA, others ?) Some other ideas ?

Answer:Radeon 8500 won't work any more.

I would suggest putting back in the GF2 and completely uninstalling the old drivers, then reboot, and put in the 8500 and go from there.
Although with a fresh install on a new HDD, that doesn't make sense. I'd try putting it back in your box to verify it still works.

Hi,

Recently I bought a ATI Radeon 8500 64Mb. Since I installed it, my screen flickers very often and I can only see lines of color. It happens randomly in different programs (Outlook, IE, Netscape, games, etc...).

I have Windows Me with Direct X8.1. DxDiag tells me that Direct3D works fine but when testing DirectDraw, it keeps crashing. I do have the latest video driver, latest BIOS update for my motherboard... I even tried the drivers from rage3d.com, but the same problem occurs... I must say that this is my first AGP video card, so I do not know if it is a hardware problem with the video card, the motherboard (which is not a recent one: Abit BX6 rev.2), a driver problem or something else... Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I just recently upgraded to windows 7 ultimate and i can't seem to find a driver for my video card. It's an ati radeon 8500 (LE) with 128mb. I already downloaded the generic package driver from ati for w7 with no success, and i even tried using an XP driver which was almost "fatal". I already read somewhere that the card was discontinued over 3 yrs ago along with any driver updates. Only thing preventing me from upgrading to a newer card and the main REASON for looking for the driver is that i use the s-video out port a lot. I would settle for even a 3rd party driver as long as it works... if no luck im going to need to downgrade back to XP

Answer:ATI Radeon 8500 driver for Windows 7

I spent about an hour on this and found a solution. Go to ATI's support site:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...rer300-xp.aspx

Download that package, extract it but DO NOT INSTALL IT. Then open device manager and click on "Update driver" for the graphics card, which in my case was reading "Generic VGA blah blah blah." Then, click on "Browse my computer for driver software." Specify the location which you have extracted the catalyst software to, the default being:

C:\ATI\SUPPORT\6-11-pre-r300_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_38185\Driver

It will install the new driver automatically. Restart and bazinga.

Note: The first time I reinstalled my screen freaked out like it had short circuited. However, I also made many other changes before restarting. Upon restarting in safe mode, uninstalling the driver, and then booting up normally and installing only the Radeon 8500 drive everything worked fine. I recommend setting the resolution to the lowest possible numble, 800x1024 or something before restarting to ensure you do not encounter maximum resolution problems that your monitor may not be capable of supporting.

I upgraded from old HP 1680 x 1050 monitor to the LG listed above last month, which is wonderful for many non-gaming reasons. I wasn't intending to upgrade my GPU also, but the price point of the RX 480 was just right. I knew going in that 1440p gaming was going to be rough on this card, but at least it will allow me to enjoy higher settings on modern games at ultrawide 1080p. For a better 1440p experience, you'll need to spend a few times more, e.g. HanoverB's GTX 1080 upgrade.
The RX 480 is shorter than my old GTX 680 and slightly easier to install since the power plugs aren't under the front cage. Also only needs a single 6 pin power vs the two 6 pins needed for the GTX 680. My XPS 8500 is mostly stock, as you can see. I had added a second optical drive (Bluray) from my previous computer and a 1 TB Samsung SSD. There was a stock WiFi PCI card, if I remember correctly, that failed in the past and is now long gone.

Hello all. I need some advice on the best drivers for my Radeon 8500. I currently have a AMD 1 gig cpu w/ a A7V133 Socket A mobo,KT133A chipset with a Radeon 8500 64mb vid card with the drivers that came on the disk, the 4.13.7191 ones. and windows 98 SE, 512 megs of SDRAM, sound card. etc.. I downloaded the 4.13.9009 ones but when i double clicked on the executable it said " contents of this file cannot be unpacked. The executable you are attempting to run has been corrupted. Please verify the integrity of the file by attempting to download it again." I find that odd since I downloaded that driver file straight off of ATI's website. And yes, I have direct x 8.1, you need that for this file. I am getting issues in Aliens versus Predator 2. First of all, it looks really jagged. I have it on the default settings but still the game has lots of aliasing going on it. All the settings are on medium too. I get some minor slowdowns or slowdowns here and there. I am assuming this is cause by the current driver I have for my video card. Any ideas on the way to get the best driver for the Radeon 8500 video card?

hey.

i bought a ATI RADEON 8500 64DDR, and i cant get it to work right. im getting terrible images in all of my games. the image kind of brakes horizontaly when ever i move, or it s really slow, the same thing happens when i watch movies, and it even hangs some times when i play games like gta3 or medal of honor. the image only gets good when i run 3dmark . im getting even worse results than my geforce2 400mx.

at the beging i thought it was a probleme with mi card,so i sent it back to the distributor, but there they told me that the card was working properly. they even tried my computer with a new card but with the same results.

so then i tried to install the latest drivers i could find, i tried the ati drivers and the omega but nothing happend.
i also tried to instal my card in my sisters computer but ended with the same results.

we both have the same motherboard, a ECS K7S5A.
do you know were i could get the latest bios for my mobo, and how to install them?
do you think thats the problem with my card, the mobo?
i have a AMD ATHLON XP1600+ , 384 of sdram,and a maxtor 40g.
do you think there migth be a problem there?

Hello all,

I'm trying to run Knights of the Old Republic 2 and appear to have the minumum requirements covered comfortably - 1.7 Ghz processor, Windows XP, DirectX 9 installed, 512 MB RAM etc. I have a Radeon 8500 which is at the low end of the min requirements but is supported, and I've installed ATI Catalyst 5.1 which I think is the best update for the card.

When I run the game the LucasArts and other intro images appear fine, but on the first game menu the graphics are totally distorted. I've checked out that DirectX is working as it should be as in the TweakGuides, but to no avail.

Could anyone suggest where the problem might lie and what I could try from here?

Many thanks.

With a DM850MV intel mobo and ATI Radeon 8500, after installing win2000 and loading the 8500 drivers, when the machine restarts and try to change res is atomatically shuted down. And the best is that it will not boot up again.

I must reset the BIOS and wait two minutes so I can restart.

I have been trying other Graphic cards, and works perfect. but with 8500...

Can some one helpme?

Im running WinXp as my Os, and recently picked up a Radeon 8500 vid card, and for the longest time it crashed constantly, froze up, fragmented all the text on the screen etc.

On the Web i found a solution to my problems, it suggested that i delete the files within my "minidump" folder and set my virtual memory settings so "No paging file". This seems to have worked I am not crashing/freezing anymore, but now when running particular games the game crashes because there isnt enough Virtual Memory.

Is there anyway to achieve a happy medium? Any advice would be a great help.

Specs:
Intel (3) 866 Mhz

Answer:Radeon 8500 & virtual memory

I trust you have the latest driver: http://www.ati.com/support/products...indows+XP&cboProducts=RADEON+8500&cmdNext=GO!

If you both eliminated virtual memory and emptied the minidump to fix the problem try turning the virtual memory back on.

Most games dont write to virtual memory with 256mb RAM. I would do a serious pruning of your startup items: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm and Ctrl+Alt+Del to end task on anything you dont need before running games.

A couple of questions.

Is this a new card for you, or have you had it for some time?
Assuming it's been in your rig working fine until now, I'd take the following steps.

First, I'd uninstall and re-install the video drivers. If that doesn't do it, re-seat the card in the AGP slot. If still no go, I'd stop wasting time troublshooting, and RMA the card if it's still under warrantly, or simply buy a new toy to replace it.

I seem to have a color banding problem. Look closely at the mountains in the screenshots. I get that a lot of time when there are a lot of dark areas on-screen, almost as if I was using 16 bit rendering.

I went to the Video Options & deactivated DXT 1 & 5 textures, selected 32 bit & I still have the same problem.

I'm using the 2.1 catalyst drivers on a Radeon 8500 ( not LE ) & DX 8.1

Anyone else having such a problem ?

I just upgraded my video card to an ATI Radeon 8500LE 128MB (I'm poor; I got it from a friend who upgraded to a 9800) and I've been having problems getting the refresh rate for the monitor to stay above 60 Hz. I go into Display settings and into Advanced and I set the resolution to 1152 x 864, 32 bit color, and a refresh rate of 75 Hz (the maximum at this resolution). I press Apply and it stays the same. I can still see the slight jittery quality associated with a low refresh rate. It still shows the refresh rate I chose in the display options, too. The only way I can get the refresh rate to stay high is at 1024 x 768 and 85 Hz.

Oh yeah, and when I press the buttons on the monitor to change parameters, it says H.F. : 53.81 KHz, V.F. 60.09 Hz. I'm guessing that means it's still at 60 Hz.

If you need anymore information, I'll give it to you as fast as I can.

I have a radeon 8500 and connected it to my tv the first time using the S-video out. Everything is great, my divx movies, and video games look good but I could barely read any text from the tv. If the text are large then I could see some of them, but blurry. I think I adjusted every possible setting on my video card, and on the tv. IS this the was it is suppose to be, or are there any other options and hidden sitches I can configure? Thanks to anyone that can help.

Answer:Blurry text on video out, from radeon 8500

This is normal, because the highest resolution a regular tv will do is 800x600, and generally 640x480. So it will always display text very very bad. Unelss you get a high definition tv that has the capabilities of doing 1024x768.

Sorry but there is nothing you can do about this.

This is a problem I've had for quite a while now, I'll try to explain it as in depth as I can...

Before I had the ATI Radeon card I had a Voodoo5 on the same mobo, everything worked fine and
I was quite amazed by the extreme stability of the Epox mainboard. (I actually never managed to crash
that configuration once!)
Then I tried to voltage mod my Epox mobo but that didn't go to well, (I fried the mobo), but end of
that story.
I had preordered my new ATI card a few months back and finally got it, but I didn't have my new
Epox mobo yet, so I just put the card into my other computer with an Abit KT7A mobo and everything
worked perfectly fine, no stability problems or visual artefacts at all...

But then when I got my new Epox mobo back the problems began; I had the same components in it as from the beginning only thing is that now the computer would always crash and display visual artefacts...

Ok I thought; must be a faulty mobo, but still something about that statement didn't sound right so
just to be sure I put my ATI card in the old mobo again; and sure enough, it ran stability tests 48H
in a row without crashing!

Ok, then I thought I'd just send in the Epox mobo as faulty but still this didn't feel right, after all
I've never in my life heard of a "DOA" Epox mobo...
So I borrowed a Geforce3 TI200 from a friend and ran stability tests on the Epox mobo for 8H in a row
but it didn't crash then either... Read more

Have you tryed fidling around with the BIOS ?

I'd set it to 1x AGP, no fastwrites, 64 mb apperture & try to run windows. If it works without a hitch, I'd re-enable each function in the BIOS one at a time & let windows run for a few hours for each function.

A BIOS update could also be a good idea ( unless you've tryed that allready ).

joewrenn, welcome to the Seven Forums.

I hope this is the driver you are trying to install,

Catalyst

as there is not now and never will be a Windows 7 driver for that card (there isn't a Vista driver either). It may take using compatibility mode,

Compatibility Mode

to get it to install properly. You will also likely not have any use of the AIW part of the card as there are no drivers for it either.

I have an XPS 8500 desktop with an AMD Radeon graphics card. I have monitor 1 connected to the onboard VGA port, and monitor 2 connected to the AMD Radeon card via DVI. I have multi-display enabled in the BIOS. When I boot (into Win 7 Pro) I see the Windows startup logo on monitor 1, then the Windows login screen is displayed on monitor 2. After logging in monitor 2 becomes the primary display, while monitor 1 continues to display the Windows startup logo.
When I go into the Connect External Display setup I see both monitors listed in the dropdown list, but when I select monitor 1 (the onboard VGA) and click "Identify" I only see a "2" displayed on monitor 2 - nothing on monitor 1. Nothing I try in the External Display setup will allow me to use monitor 1, either as an extended display or as a duplication of the primary display. It simply displays the Windows startup logo the whole time. It's as if Windows recognises the onboard VGA adapter when it starts the boot process, then loses access to it as the boot process progresses.
Device Manager lists the onboard VGA display adapter as "Video controller (VGA Compatible)". When I try to disable it the Device Manager applet locks up, requiring a forced reboot to recover.
Any idea how I can get Windows to recognise both monitors after booting?

Which is the power supply best match with the AMD Radeon HD 7770 video card for my new XPS 8500 desktop computer ? The original graphics card was the nvidia GeForce GT 640, but then Dell emailed me that the order has been changed due to that nvidia card no longer available for a Windows 7 XPS 8500 PC. So now they changed my graphics card to that AMD 7770 which shows a 500 watt power supply minimum is required, but the 8500 has a 460 watt in it. So I did email Dell Customer Support about this issue, but since I do not play any games or high graphics use applications, will the 460 watt work okay or not ? Or the other OEM type AMD Radeon card available from Dell for this computer is the HD 7570 with lower power supply requirements at only 400 watts ?

i was choosing between a ti500 and a R8500 and realized their specs were nearly the same, but the 8500 is better in both specs and benchmarks. Anyways this would be my first time using an ATI card (no offence ATI fans) and my friends all have nVidia and say ATI sucks. Now i know it can not be as bad as they say but i just want to clear some things up AND I AM NOT TRYING TO TURN THIS INTO A NVIDIA VS ATI BOARD!!!!:
I have heard from all of them that ATI cards fry/die sooner then Nvidia's cards or don't last as long..
also i want to be able to play halo and unreal tournament 2004 (on humble 800X600 with med settings) but they say it won't run it because those games work way better with nVidia cards.
They also say ATI drivers suck..
any truth to any of this????

p.s. how will halo & UT04 run (with 800X600 or even 640X480 for halo) with a
1.1ghz athlon
512 pc100 ram
64mb R8500 OR would it run better on a ti500

and would i see a difference if i got a 128mb 8500 rather then 64mb

Answer:8500 vs ti500=8500, but switching to ATI questions

ATI doesn't do as well in Doom 3, but thats about it. With everything else, its pretty much all personal preference. With the card you are suggesting and your hardware, you wont be running Doom 3 anyway. As for your friends saying ATI sucks, they are just being fan boys. Benchmarks prove that up until the X800 series, ATI totally slaughtered Nvidia. So really, its up to you whether you pick Nvidia or ATI, especially with older cards. Now when it comes to X800 vs. 6800, thats a different story since there is a major difference in performance between the two cards.

Tearing my hair out over this one. I upgraded my Dual Opteron system from XP to Win 7 Home Basic. I have just added the XFX Radeon HD4650 graphics card (AGP). I Installed the drivers from ATI and the card shows up in the Device Manager. Problem is this: Whenever i start the machine normally, i can work for about 2 or 3 minutes, then the display locks up. Fully locks, no way to restart other than shut the system off. When I restart in safe mode everything works just fine. The device manager still has the drivers loaded and the system works fine (other than i am in safe mode and other things don't work). I have taken the card out and tried a different card in the PCI graphics slot, and that works no problem but i don't have that slot available, i really need an AGP card. I have also disabled all the things that run in msconfig on startup, but that didn't help. I also tried removing all the other add-in cards in the machine and that didn't help. Ideas?

It only locks up on games using Direct3D to render (Far Cry and Vice City). Quake III Arena, UT '99 and Deus Ex all run fine, but I use OpenGL as the renderer for those games. Sometimes the ATI VPU recover (or some such) will popup (sometimes I have to alt-tab out) and I'm able to resume playing with no ill effects. This is usually accompanied with repeating sound and the image frozen on the screen. Other times it will stop responding altogether, the monitor goes blank and starts scrolling it's "check computer cord" message that it does when it has no signal, and the sound just dies. At that point I have to hard reset to recover.

I've got DirectX 9.0c installed, as well as the latest ATI and Chipset drivers.

hi, my first post here, i have had a nightmare with my 9800XT card over the last few months, whenever i install any drivers above 4.10 Cat. it seems to give me blue screens randomly, i have updated my motherboard chipset ect.. As ATI advised me to but still im getting it. Even today while running a 3d Mark test i got a blue screen. My GFX card (In the ATI overdrive panel) says its at 70-80*C outside of a game, In the "PC health" section in the start up the CPU is 30-40*C. I mainly get the problem playing the following Games, Battlefield 2, Joint operations and Blackhawk down. i cant figure this out and thought i would post here.

Im currently using the latest ATi drivers (5.7)

Any help would be grateful.

Jonathan.

Answer:ATI 9800XT Radeon (blue screens, lock-ups, ect.)

The 9800 series cards run very hot. Your card fan may be failing. You can get a VGA Silencer for about $15. It replaces the fan and heatsink and does a great job of cooling the card. You may also need to do a clean install of Windows if you've changed the video driver alot.

I bought my Diamond ATI Radeon HD 2600Pro SB Edition (verbatim from the box, just to make it as clear as possible) at around the end of summer and have been experiencing problems the entire time.

The main issue is that while playing games (sometimes doing anything, more frequently with games, though) the screen will freeze, occasionally accompanied by a strange pixelation around the edges of the screen, followed by a black screen. Sometimes, the game will recover after about 10 seconds and I'll get a VPU Recovery message. At other times I'll be brought simply to that black screen with the error message, the game not recovering. Less frequently, but still somewhat common, the screen becomes a strange array of orange or pink pixelated boxes in which the computer simply won't respond to anything.

Any insight or help would be much appreciated, and probably far more helpful than ATI's support has been.

Hi all

I would just like to raise a problem im having with a Radeon 9800Pro, and after reading numerous other posts on the Radeon blackout problems, i can only asume its either power problems or a wrongly configured setup. However im quite new at this and am looking for a more Judged opinion

After a good year my Radeon started to freeze my computer while watching divx movies and then starting up games such as Halo/far cry. I thought a driver reinstall might fix it, using the CD that came with the card. With no joy. So i uninstalled with driver-cleaner and installed newer catalyst drivers from 4.12 - 5.6, from the ATI site, all of which had various success but would eventually put the monitor into standby permantly.

I then reinstalling Win XP, latest nVidia NForce drivers for mobo, .NET for catalyst, old drivers again & latest version of directX 9.0 and ran dxdiag. Direct draw tests worked but not the Direct 3D tests. I noticed the CPU and mainboard temps were 50-55C so now the case is open with a table fan constantly blowing cool air which brings it down to 35-40C The shuttle case can get quite warm. Also the PSU is only 240W and ive heard that a power supply of around 400W could be more beneficial (that cant fit in a shuttle case) but if so how did it sustain the Radeon for so long up until now?

In the meantime i have ordered a Radeon 9600 because it uses a heatsink no fan, fits a shuttle and i assume needs lower power demands, not bothered about speed ... Read more

Question: Game Lock Up

Ok i will try to explain all this in one go. i have microsoft flight sim 2004 just installed, The problem been is that after so long say 1, 2 mins it just locks up and i have to restart my computer from the restart button. In this game, it gives you a diagnostic tool wich allows you to boot the game in safe mode and play it, to see if there is a hardware fault, I did this and it didnt freeze or hang. But as soon i i start it the proper way its back to it hanging and freezing. So this is suggesting that i have a hardware fault. What does anyone think can be the problem, I run other games and dont have this problem, my card is a Geforce Fx 5900 and i have all the latest driver and direct x installed. My OS Is XP Home with service pack 2 and i have 512 ddr Amd 2500 processer.

Question: 2nd Game Lock Ups

Hey, really not sure where to put this but this has been bugging me for a while now and I should really see if I can get some help to fix it. Quite awkward to explain the problem but ill give it a try;

If I start up my computer, I can then load up any game that I have with no worries and play for as long as I want, however when I then close the game, and try to open up another game (could be the same game again) then my computer will attempt to start it, and lockup on a black screen with the loading cursor not spinning requiring a system restart.

At first I thought it was to do with steam as it appeared to be only steam games which did it, but it does seem to do this with non-steam games too (However for some reason it does not with starcraft 2). So this has really been getting annoying having to restart if I want to change game.

Any help on this problem, or things that you could need me to post up?

Oh and I have done various memory, CPU and GPU hardware tests and nothing seems to be wrong, and this is with the latest drivers and a clean windows install so I really dont understand what could be causing it.

Thanks

Hello, after purchasing a new PC, I can no longer play a game. The game in question is Medal of Honor Allied Assault, a very old game now.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.66GHz (1333FSB)

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

The problem is that I cannot run the game for more than 30 minutes without it locking up and giving me a system memory error:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y221/pk89/error.jpg
As soon as I start the game I get frequent lock-ups, where the game basically ceases for around 0.2/0.5 seconds. These lock-ups increase in frequency and length until finally the game crashes, with a repeating audio of whatever was playing as it crashed - like a skipping record.
If you know about the "lagometer" in games, I have taken pictures of the lagometer, showing the green line disturbance that occurs at each lock-up. You can see that the first picture shows the minimal disturbance at the beginning of the session, and the last shows the frequent lock-ups close to crashing.

Try to reset your virtual memory setting.
The file should be a fixed size so that it does not get fragmented, with minimum and maximum set the same
The file should be 2.5 times the size of RAM (or some other multiple)
Go To Start,Control Panel,System,Advanced, under the settings tab select advanced, and on the bottom under Virtual memory settings you can change it to what it needs to be. You can also let your system try to run it but that is only if nothing else works.

So recently I got some new ram and a new BFG 8800GT... I noticed when playing games like NFS Most wanted and Call Of Jaurez that my computer will lock up and freeze and I'll have to restart, I'm not sure if this problem is caused by the new video card or the new ram [its kingston valueram, I have it overclocked just a bit, is any overclocking too much for valueram?]

I heard there was a bad batch of 8800GTs, so I thought it could be that? I picked this one up earlier this month.

More info:

My 8800GT is overclocked to 679/979.

Sometimes when it locks up in Most Wanted it will recover, but graphics and textures will be misplaced, lots of graphical glitches, but when I minimize the game and go back into it all the graphics are fine again.

I recently had some ram slot troubles, certain slots not working, but I took the motherboard out of the case and reset it in there and now all the slots will work.

Anyways, thanks in advance, I want to get some advice before I crack my computer open.

Hope this is allowed here...Soldier of Forune Special Edition...haven't played it for a while, tried today and it says the violence lock has been activated so I can't play the full game with gore. I am the only adult in the house and have never "locked" the violence button. Tried uninstall via add/remove, searched for any files left, cleaned the registry with regseeker but on reinstallation it says "game was previously installed with violence lock, you need a password". I am very adult (44!) if not mature and have tried all my usual passwords, despite being sure I have never applied the violence lock. Any ideas??

Im not sure but have you tried the gold patch for it,you may even have the patch with the game but it may help, its about 100 odd meg if i remember right.

Hi,

I have a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB 8x AGP card. It is awesome...and works flawlessly...uh...except when I want to run 3D games (which is the whole reasone I spent 220 bucks on the damn card).

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1 with ALL the updates. I used Catalyst 4.7 as the very first driver for the Card. I've obviously tried uninstalling it, reinstalling, trying old drivers etc...nothing changes the situation:

I haven't loaded up all my games yet, but I have tested it with Rise of Nations & Everquest. Both games load and work well...for about 5-15 minutes, and then they either crash to desktop, freeze up, or fully crash my system.

I've read many other forums that site similar problems...but no one has offered a real solution (just a string of the usual suggestions...all of which I've tried).

Most notably...because it seemed like it could be a overheating issue...I aimed two extra fans straight at the 9800 pro...no change. All fans in the system spin well and the case & processor donot generate much heat either.

My power supply, motherboard, ram and 9800 pro are all brand new.

I have
---450 Watt PSU
---MSI 865G Neo2 (Intel Chipset)
---P4 2.8 Northwood
---1 Gig of Nanya Tech PC3200 Ram (2x512) (set up in single channel mode right now because Dual Channel was too buggy). I know the memory is cheap, but it runs my system very well without a hitch. I can run 10+ different big programs at the same time very smoothly. My games run great too...fo... Read more

Issues with Radeon 7500

Just upgraded a from a Voodoo3 3000 AGP (which has served me loyally for years now) to a Radeon 7500. After downloading the latest drivers for it, the new card seems to be up and running ok, but I've noticed one major problem. I a lot of games (esp. Jedi Outcast), the game appears to run entirely smoothly at both high and low resolutions with most high quality options enabled, however every twenty seconds or so the game seems to freeze for a split second, then continue. It's not a major issue, but it *is* an annoying one that has not been present before. Any ideas? I have a friend with an older Radeon who has reported similar problems...

System Specs:
Iwill KK266Plus mb w/ Athlon 950mhz
Radeon 7500 64MB (obviously)

Any help is most appreciated!

I just built a new computer with this video card, and whenever I play Oblivion(on almost highest settings), every now and then it just crashes. At first, it would work very well for 15-30min before an error message pops up saying that the "VPU had stopped responding and had been reset...etc"(paraphrase).

Generally, after that I'd be able to alt-tab back to Oblivion, and continue playing, without any trouble, until it happens again, 15-30 minutes later.

After doing some research on google, I've found that other people have solved this problem by downloading ATT(ATI Tray Tools), and manually setting the fan speed to 100% and displaying frame rate/VPU temp. Before changing the fan settings, I noticed that it would crash around 55-60C. After maximizing fan speed, instead of resetting every 15-30 minutes, instead, after about an hour or so of play, the VPU would simply crash altogether, without resetting(VPU recovery is still on). Basically, my screen would go black, the monitor button light would go yellow(instead of green), and while I could still move around and hear footsteps as I move around, nothing would show on the monitor(I take this to mean that the video card has crashed). At this point, I have to restart the computer.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Radeon x1950PRO VPU crashing in middle of game

I had roughly the same problem with my X1950Pro, except that I never got the warning message.

Just goes black.
But I half expected that, from removing the stock cooler and putting in an aftermarket one. The I/O chip (or at least I think it is the I/O chip) was overheating, and its a common problem for people using aftermarket cooling on these cards.

I fixed the problem by cable tying a spare NB heatsink to it.

If you're using the cooler that came with the chip, you might need to RMA.

I got a new comp around september last year and have had problems with the graphics card since i bought it. My graphics card is radeon 9800 SE AGP 256mb.

Other system information is

AMD atholon 64 processor 3400+
1024 Ram
XP home edition

This seems to happen on most games but not on all of them. At any point (some games quicker than others) my screen suddenly freezes and a couple of things sometimes happen. Firstly, the screens suddenly goes black like its turned its self off and says ''no signal imput''. Sometimes it may say, but not as often, 'out of range'. The more common thing that happens is the screen suddenly freezes and multicoloured lines run down the screen and the music of the game suddenly jams. Finally, this has become less frequent over the year, the pc goes back to the desctop and says VGA accelerator stoped responding, then it says that it has changed it to software rendering. The only way to solve all these problems is restarting your computer or doing a hard shutdown. What does confuse me though is that some games do it more than others. For example, every time i play Rollercoaster tycoon 3 i can play from around 10secs- 5 mins then suddenly, it crashes. Although when i play world of warcraft i may be able to play for 2-4 hours before it crashes. People on other forums have had the same problem, most of the time with Radeon 9800 pro, people recomended them to blow a home fan into the side of their computer. Now that... Read more

Hello.
This is my first time. I have searched the postings to find a similar problem/solution to no avail so here goes.
I recently upgraded my RAM from 32Mb EDO to 128Mb SDRAM, which was done successfully and picked up on the reboot.
Since then my son has been unable to play Need For Speed 111 Hot Pursuit. Similar cd rom games still work and there are no other system problems. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game several times. It always gets to the menu from either auto run or the desk top shortcut. The other menu items are ok but when you hit the play button it immediately goes to a blank screen and locks the pc up without error messages. CTRL ALT DELETE doesn't work and I have to reboot. I have tried the game's tech help and at their suggestion upgraded DirectX from version 5 to 8a and checked some settings with no result obviously. I have also exchanged the 128Mb module with the retailer for another one in case there was a fault. I can't think of anything else. Any ideas would be appreciated.
System details.

5Gb HDD (1.8Gb used)

Fan IssueI've cleaned my laptop sometime this month after about two years of use. Popped it open, blew everything, popped it back. I saw a post before posting this about removing the battery before cleaning so i'm considering going back and doing that. I usually keep it running in high performance because I use it for gaming. Core/CPU usage is almost never above 10%, currently sitting at 2%-4%. Memory is usually high because I only have a 500GB SSD, currently at 58%. The other stats (disk, network, and GPU), sit at 0 (although GPU will boost to about 60% when gaming). Currently, I have it in balanced mode and set the maximum core usage to 40% and it's still going strong. Any suggestions?  Gaming IssueAlso on a side note, if anyone can assist me with a gaming issue I'm having. My computer has a 960 GTX, i74720GQ @ 2.6GHz, and 500 GB SSD (samsung evo--upgraded from 1TB HD) and I'm having issues with my FPS in-game. It locks at 30 or FPS across all games. I do have two GPU's (integrated and 960 GTX) and have always used the GTX as the primary source, uncapped in-game graphics, limited background interference (services, programs, etc.) and possibly other things I can't think of but cannot release the in-game FPS cap. Even when settings are at the lowest settings. In previous times, if I were to uncap, it'd reach above 60 easily consistently but now when it's uncapped, it never goes above 60. One might ask what changed? After upgrading from HDD to SSD, I had to reset my ... Read more

First off you should probably place another fan in the case, or another one on the graphics card. Your other temperatures appear to be normal. I was having issues like this awhile back. Try updating your graphics card driver, but use forceware. Here is the link for your card- http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html . Hope this helps!

Right, I have this problem with my graphics cards that I've been trying to fix for a while. I am using two R9 280X cards in Crossfire. They're overclocked from 1000 to 1100 MHz by the manufacturer. The symptons are mainly these:

1) When I use MSI Afterburner to overclock the cards, the overclock applies at first, but after a few minutes it defaults to 1000 MHz. Changing the clock again has no effect, it just stays at 1000 MHz whether I try to overclock or underclock. The same is true for the memory clock. Here's a picture showing how it looks.

2) According to GPU-Z the clocks apply correctly to the 2nd card.

3) The power limit slider seems to be working. Increasing or decreasing it leads to marginal changes in benchmarks.

4) All the games I've tried completely ignore the 3D application settings in Catalyst Control Center. Changing things like AA and AF have no impact on image quality or frame rate even when I tell it to override application settings.

These problems have persisted even though I've tried different graphics cards. I used to have a single HD 7970 and had the exact same problems. I also tried reinstalling a fresh version of Windows, in case it was some sort of software problem, but the problems persisted.

This has led me to believe there might actually be a problem with my motherboard, as that's the only plausible source of the problem that I haven't tested. I have no idea how the motherboard could be the problem, but I... Read more

Heya.. I've been searching for an answer to this question all over the internet for about a week now, and I still haven't found anything, so I thought, that I write here...
There's absolutely no problems with MAFIA installation, as I know, many people do. Also, I've reinstalled it about five times, so don't recommend that to me. When I open the game, then first of all, NOD32 determines something.. if you think, that it would help, if I wrote here, what it actually says, then I will write it here, but you gotta let me know. Besides, there's nothing that could be a virus, I have original CD's, right from Gathering of Developer's. Then I close NOD32 form task manager, and open Mafia again (the last time nothing but the NOD note appeared). This time is almost the same, only without the NOD notification. When I look at the task manager processes, then Game.exe appears for a half of a second, but that's all, and even that isn't happening every time. Once, way back, about 3 months ago p) it gave me 'Init error'. Then I looked up in the internet and Illusion Softworks had said, that most of the 'Init errors' comes from the graphic card drivers or not updated DirectX. DirectX is up to date, but here comes my problem, there's just no drivers for my graphic card on ATI website. Ofcourse, I've looked from other sites but still notning normal..

Now clearly: If I open Game.exe, nothing happens, what to do? I ... Read more

I have MVP Baseball 2005 and C&C: Generals. I've had them both for awhile and didn't start having this problem of the games freezing up during gameplay until within the last month or so. I haven't been playing other games lately, but I imagine this isn't specific to MVP and Generals.

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz

I have the latest driver for the video card.

I don't believe the issue is overheating or too low wattage of a power supply, which were suggested in other posts I've come across in a Google search where others described issues that sounded similar.

Hi guys.

My friend recently built me a great computer. Only problem with it is that I can?t play War Craft 3 and Star Wars for more than 10 minutes ? the computer crashes and frezzes.

I have the 9500 Radeon Pro card, and the Asus P4P800-VM motherboard. To my knowledge I have the catalyst 3.6 installed, and the latest motherboard driver.

I found this thread here - http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread/t-6108.html

Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Get all the latest updates for your drivers and software. Also there is now Catalyst 3.7 now, and it may have a few bug fixes too.

Make sure you update the:
video
sound
direct x
windows os (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)

Also, fool around with your video card settings.

Additionally, there may be BIOS settings that should be set/fixed properly.

Hello! Since the most recent build of W-10 (9879), my caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights do not function on either computer on which I have W-10 installed (a desktop with a USB keyboard and a laptop with an integrated keyboard). The keys still work to correctly toggle the functionality, but the keyboard lights don't work. In case it matters, my keyboard's actual backlights and my mouse's internal light (not the laser, the internal LED) are working correctly, it's just the CL, NL, and SL indicators that don't function.

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then try updating your BIOS.  If neither works...It's pretty much dead and not worth fixing.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

Can you toggle those functions off, one at a time? Sometimes restarting the computer will use the last state it was in, I'd fully shut down and pull the power cord from the computer and the keyboard cable then put them back and try again.
