I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, all, I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop and recently bought a Asus MB169B external USB monitor.  When I plug the monitor in, the laptop monitor (not the external monitor) flickers about every half second.  If I unplug it, it stops.  I upgraded my video driver to no avail.
Is it simply a power supply issue (the external monitor  does not have a power cord)?  Anything I can do?  It does it even if I have the laptop plugged in and charging.
*something interesting - I just discovered if I duplicate the display and not extend the flickering goes away...but that kind of defeats the point of a dual monitor for me.
Thanks.

Question: flickering monitor

I turned my monitors on the morning, to find one of them flickering, really quite noticeabley. Almost like it turns off momentarily, perhaps 1/10th of a second - because it's like a black flicker.

At first, i thought it was my graphics card. But after taking the DVI cable out of the graphics card, changing the plug socket, and turning off and on the monitor it still continues to do it.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing it ? or is it simply broken

Thanks.

Question: Monitor flickering

I have 2 monitors conected to my graphics card, a radeon 550
The flashing on and off is the same kind of event as when you first boot up the computer, and after logging on the display disappears for a second before showing the desk top. Thats normal behaviour. What happens to mine is that the display disappears from time to time, then on occasions starts to flicker on and off continuously. Ive checked themonitors and the connections. all fine.
I've checked the display driver etc and everything seems OK. When this happens, the CPU fan starts to go into overdrive, and when I've beenable to look at it, the process monitor shows CPU usage of 50-60 %, with no explicable cause.
Ive run Hijack this spybot etc, but cannot find anything untoward.

Question: Flickering monitor

I have a new win xp home pc with a 4+ year old CRT monitor. As of the last couple days, the monitor will begin flashing unreadably after about 10 minutes of use until I put it in standby mode for a couple minutes. However, it won't stay in standby mode more than 10 minutes or so...I'm running NAV and firewall and something always seems to pop up - I've turned off live update, which gets me up to about 10 minutes. Now that I think back on it, I've heard the monitor turning on and off quite frequently, and am trying to figure out it that's something to do with my flickering/flashing. Any ideas how I can get my monitor back? And what about standby? Can I keep the thing in standby, or do I need to give it up? I currently have it set to go into standby after 15 minutes, although I usually manually put it on when I leave. The monitor worked fine for the first couple weeks of use with this box, and worked fine for the last four years with W2K.

Hello,

Thought I would ask the experts..... Every now and then my computer monitor will flicker. It goes completely black and then in a few seconds it will return to normal. I have been told it could be a virus or a computer hacker getting into the system. I do not know if that is true, or just an urban myth. I have however ran system scans for viruses and they have returned clean. The problem is finding a reliable competent virus scan. I currently use Microsofts LiveOne care because Microsoft offers it, and I figured they would know more about Windows XP etc. I use crapcleaner to remove unwanted files, and use to use CA (computer associates i think) virus scanner before the microsoft virus scanner. I sit behind the secured wireless router from ATT so I think I am somewhat secure.

Let me know if there is any truth to the screen flickering and what I should do.

Thank you.

Answer:Regarding Monitor and Flickering

I think it may be hardware either:
The monitor itself, is slowly dying
The data or power cable is not seated correctly
Or the video card that you are connecting to is not seated correctly, or faulty

To remove all other possibilities:
Download the current Video Driver for your computer, from the manufactures site.
HERE is the Virus and spyware removal guide, if required.

Question: Monitor Flickering

This is a particularly strange issue. My LCD monitor has begun a strange staticky flickering, where bars of static flicker across the width of the screen (vertically extremely narrow, though) whenever a certain color or something is on the screen, wherever the color is present and all along that span of width. I suspect it is a shade of blue that is doing it- this background on a webcomic reliably causes it when displayed, but the individual background tile doesn't seem to. The effect is very sporadic normally, but having that webcomic maximized, as an example, causes a significant amount of static after a minute or so. I have not yet noticed the problem in games, but then I haven't been paying attention in them.

Hi allHave a crt monitor which my other half has noticed its started to devolpe a rather annoying / worrying flicker(over the last week).Have checked the basics ie screen rez which is set to 1024x728 and refresh rates which is set to 75hz. Am running xp home and have the hide modes that this monitor can't support ticked so am not running it at anything it can't handle.Graphics card is onboard and am not at home at the mo so can't say what its is specifically just know its an intel model. Have checked in device manager thou and everything looks fine from that end.So then my question is this am I missing something basic or is it a sign that the monitor is on the way out its only just over a year old thou and not anything special as it was bundled in.Any ideas thoughts suggestions?Cheers

Answer:CRT Monitor flickering

Most likely cause is either speakers too close to the monitor or any desktop lamp that has a transformer in the base. Check for these and any other items that may have a transformer, even a mobile phone charger, move them away and please post back to let us know how you get on.

I know that this is not a necessarily Windows 7 issue, but I have no idea what is going on here. I recently bought three LG E2242 monitors for my system, and one of them will inconstantly stay on. I am fairly certain that it is not the monitor as I have switched the monitors to see if that was the case. I think it may have something to do with how I have everything set up. I have the monitors plugged into my Radeon HD 6850 (two using DVI, one using an active Display Port to DVI adapter). The one thing that I thought of was that the signal from the Display Port one the graphics card was not getting enough power, or getting just too little power... but that doesn't really seem that feasible (bear in mind, I am not a computer engineer, so who knows, hopefully someone out there ).

TL : DR -> One of my three monitors flickers on and off, not the monitor or the cable, could be the adapter or the graphics card.

Please any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Question: monitor flickering

I had this heavy flickering in my screen, specialy when the back-ground was dark.Than thanks to the people of the forum I fixed it. The problem was the refresh rate wich was put at a lower state. When I switched to the higher one I noticed that there were only two choices : 60 Hertz and 75 Hertz (what I put). My question is: Is there any higher point i can choose for my SAMSUNG SYNCMASTER 940 BW?

Answer:monitor flickering

Hi Maxtrimi,

Usually at 75 Hertz, the flickering will stop. If a higher refresh rate is available, you may have to increase the resolution to see it as an available option.

For more details, see:

Hope this helps you,

I have an EVGA 7600gt that has two DVI outputs, and I have a monitor connected to each. The problem is that whichever monitor I have set as the secondary one flickers whenever I open up the nVidia control panel or click the task bar icon. Has anyone ever had this happen to them, and what could be wrong?

Note that it doesn't matter which monitor I use as secondary, I've tried switching them around.

Answer:2nd Monitor flickering

Try different drivers. I've there are some wierd issues with some drivers and some cards. For example if I open the nvidia control panel at all after initial setup it screws up video playback, everything becomes really dark and can't easily be fixed by making video adjustments in the control panel, only way to fix is to change drivers.

Are you using LCDs or converting dvi to vga for crts?

Question: flickering monitor

First, I'm sorry If I have posted this in the wrong place

My monitor has recently started flickering. I installed 2 new games recently (C.S.I, and Mall tycoon) I have had no problems with the C.S.I game, however the mall tycoon game, after playing it for a couple hours shut down with a macromedia error, (the screen goes black and it takes a bit for windows to come back, then I get the macromedia error report thingy)
last night when I played it, after it shut itself down I noticed I had a yellow triangle with a "!" on it and it said something about virtual memory being low. I have this game installed in my program files...should it be somewhere else?(the program file shows it is 160.00 mb)
the total size of my hard drive is 38.3gb free space is 22.9gb
I have 256mb ram(I think )

Question: Monitor flickering

Today my monitor just starting this little flickering thing, the picutre never goes out but there are little lines of distortion (I dont mean black and white fuzz, but like the picture just being slightly distorted) jumping around on screen for a few seconds at a time. THen it pauses for 3 seconds then does it over again. Could this mean my new 19" monitor is a P.O.S. (I just bought it about 6 months ago after my old 19" monitor gave out after 6 months, and no it's not the same brand or kind as the old one).

One other thing I've noticed is that if I turn the volume all the way up I can hear little static "pops" that coordinate to each of the flickerings, I was just wondering if that could mean it's not the monitor since it seems like if the monitor was giving out the speakers wouldn't be making any noise to the flickerings. So maybe it might be a video card problem? Any advice/tips/suggestions would be great before I take it into a shop and just let them figure it out. Thanks, hopefully.

Answer:Monitor flickering

First check that the cable from the video card to the monitor and the monitor power plug are securely connected. If all that is good, open up the case, and reseat the video card. While inside, make sure other cables are inserted correctly. It sounds like a loose connection someplace.

IF the monitor does not support 60Hz you have to force the video card to see it as 59Hz it will be an option where it shows your monitors signal in the drop down box.

Have you checked for overheating since you say the fan goes into overdrive?

Does any particular process show excess cpu use other than System Idle Process?

Going to move you to hardware since this doesn't really sound like an XP software issue.

Question: Flickering Monitor

I'm attempting to fix a monitor problem for a friend. Problem: the monitor flickers badly. It goes completely black for half a second every 10 seconds or so. Sometimes I even get a blue screen (with error codes like 0X85EA12C8).

Running Windows XP SP3 on a Dell Dimension 8300, using a nvidia GeForce FX 5200. The problems started when the computer was first used after half a year in the cupboard.

I've tried (re)installing the proper drivers, but that didn't work. The monitor functions normally when connected to another PC. It also functions normal when I boot in Safe Mode.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Question: flickering monitor

For quite a while when i play games or movies, my monitor will flicker occationally. It only occationally happens, but it has happened rather frequently over the past couple days while playing Fate of the Dragon. I'm not sure if this is something to do with the game, with my video card(a TNT2 16MB AGP), or my monitor(a compaq p50). Rest of comptuer specs as follows:

AMD Thunderbird 750 mhz
192 MB ram
24x cd-rom
2x2x16 cd-rewriter
onboard 3d sound
onboard 10/100 lan
Win 98 2nd ed

Answer:flickering monitor

Good spec system, good video card, but did you figure you were saving money on keeping an old 15" monitor? You have put a hobble on your graphics card, because you are limited by your monitor. Depending on what resolution you are running, I'll bet the refresh rate is below 70, which is why you will get flickers. I checked the Spec sheet out for the p50, and it states that max res is 1280 X 1024 at 60 MHZ refresh rate. That will produce a flicker. If you keep your settings to 800 X 600, you might get a refresh rate above 72, which will eliminate flicker. If you are going to be playing games, then I would recommend a newer monitor. Monitor technology has changed as well, and while it makes very little difference when viewing spreadsheets, while playing games you want the best possible.

Question: Monitor Flickering

After recently upgrading my video card to a GeForce6800GT (Overclocked ala BFG) I have started to notice odd flickering problems when any substantial load is put on the card.

The screen runs fine except for random pixels on the screen flickering, but occasionally the entire image will disappear, as if you unplugged the input cable from the screen for a second. It happens enough to be incredibly annoying and is causing some pretty bad eye strain.

I'm thinking that the cause may be due to a lack of power being supplied from the PSU, as it is rated 305W whereas the card is listed as requiring 350 (I know, it's an old prebuilt Dell.) and I'm working on getting a new one. I just wanted some input on other things that could potentially be causing this before plopping down the cash for a new one.

Answer:Monitor Flickering

As you are outside the recommended PSU ratings already, remember that they will be severely exceeded again with overclocking the card, Power use rises faster than the overclock ratio, as does the heat.

Answer:Monitor flickering

LCD monitors aren't supposed to flicker... What kind of 'flickering' are we talking, can you describe it? Possible causes are the display driver, in which case it is normal if it only happens during system startup or when exiting 3D applications. Another cause can be a broken backlight, which is bad.

Have you tried moving the comp to a different room? If it works ok at work, then there could be something near to where your monitor normally is that`s causing interference.

Ok, I'm having this problem with an old crt monitor. I know the monitor works, so that's not the problem. It's an old NEC Multisync FE1250 and when I plug it into the VGA port on the side of my computer, all the screen does is flicker. I searched around on google and every thing I found said change the refresh rate. I tried every rate there was 59, 60, 70, 73, 75, and 80, but none of them got rid of the flickering. The flickering is so bad that you can't see anything going on. I've also had this problem with a LED tv that my aunt had.

Question: Monitor Flickering

I have a unbranded 15" flat screen monitor which when my p.c is not being used will start to flicker on and off at various frequencies.
I haven't had this happen when I am actually using my p.c now for example. But if I was to leave it for an hour or so sometime less it will be flickering when I come back to it.
I can still run the p.c but obviously not being able to see very well so it doesn't actually crash. Sometimes if I'm lucky it will cure itself quickly.
Mostly it needs a restart and when it boots up to my desktop it will quite often still be flickering.
At the first screen after a restart I can get into the bios and the screen will be ok it seems it is only whilst the xp pro is running that it cause the fault.
Finally the other factor which may or not be linked is when I shut down \ restart the monitor displays no sync and always has done it didn't seem to cause any problems because at first everything worked ok.

Please any advise would be grateful

Ned

I figure there can only be 2 issues here, either the monitor has developed a fault (i'm trying to locate another to try) or its the on-board graphics chip. Should this be the case, i would like to add a graphics card, but how do i know if it will be compatible? No gaming req, just a basic card will do.

Answer:flickering monitor

Check cable connections are tight too and try another cable if possible.

Question: Monitor Flickering

My Iiyama Vision Master 1451 19" monitor has suddenly started flickering. The edges of the picture seem to be moving in and out, and it keeps flickering (getting brighter & darker). This is not a refresh rate problem, although I thought it might be. The monitor only supports 85Hz and that's what it's on, although I've tried 60Hz and still the same problem. I've also tried Degauss several times, to no effect.I have also checked the area around the monitor for anything that could be magnetic, but there is nothing different. This happened a few days ago and then went away, but now it's back and is happening as I type this. The exact model number of the monitor is LS902UT. My graphics card is a Sparkle GeForce 3 Ti200 64MB.The first one of this monitor I got had to be replaced under warranty because it was faulty - the picture was all distorted and setting it to the defaults didn't help. Also this one is now nearly 2 years old so it's out of warranty I think. I think the problem started out as a high pitched sound that would suddenly come from the monitor, and then go if switched off/on. This hasn't happened since the flickering problem started though, so I was wondering whether it's related.Any ideas?

Answer:Monitor Flickering

In the OSD is there an auto configuration option, if so run it several times to reset the monitor. Other than this suggestion I'm afraid I can't be of more help.

Every once in a while, most of the time when I first start the computer up, my monitor will flicker on and off. I have checked the connection cables and everything seems to be secure. Anyone know what may be causing this?

Answer:Monitor flickering?

flicker on and off? Well, if it doesn't do it any other time I say forget about it. If it's a new problem, or it happens randomly when booted, I would guess the monitors failing, that or theres a prob. with you video card. If it doesn't do it after windows boots and or it's been doing it as long as you have had your computer, it's probably some power quirk with the comp or video card and I wouldn't worry about it.

My hp pavilion flat panel monitor has started to flicker. Refresh rate is set at 60 hertz which is the default setting. I have tried it at 70 hertz, which stops the flicker, but it does semms a little unstable at times. I read somewhere that it could damage the monitor running it at a higher setting. Has anyone any suggestions please.

Answer:tft monitor flickering

Check what refresh rates the moitor is able to support and set it to the highest possible. You should be able to get the information from the documentation or HP's site. The default setting is 60 Hz because all TFT monitors will run at that, not because it is the best refresh rate.

Hey!

A few months ago I noticed my monitor began to flicker on and off every once-in-a-while.
As time went by, it got worse (the flicks would be more constant, and sometimes last for longer).
I figure it'd be my monitor (it was 6 years old), so today I finally went out and bought a new one "ViewSonic VA1912w" 19" LCD screen.
I install it, with no problems, up-to-date drivers and all that, and now the monitor flickers for a longer period of time; Like, the screen will flick black for 3-5 seconds at a time..

My computer model is "Q-Tech".
I am using XP Pro, Version 2002, Service Pack 2.
I have 2.41GHZ, with 256MB of RAM.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please?
If you need more information, I will try to provide it; I am so desperate to sort this out - I thought today would be the end of my problems, but it appears just to be worse :(.

Thank you for your time. J.

Question: Monitor flickering

I'm not sure if this is software or hardware issue but I had this problem for a long time. Also maybe the title should be screen flickering instead of monitor flickering.

My PCs are always on, 24/7. This last one bought not 6 months ago(monitor is older) has a very weird issue:

1.So, my PC is never turned off, when I'm not using it I just turn off the monitor. So, when I turn the monitor on again and do some action(open a browser, open a new link in the browser) the screen starts rapidly flickering(from black to normal).
Sometimes I can halt this flickering by clicking on the normal part(click on any normal part of the screen). But most of the times I have to hard reset. Or if I' am fast enough reset via ctrl+alt+del and use task manager. Of course I have to hard reset because I can't see anything due to black screen, not because computer is frozen or something.

2.If I turn on the monitor and wait for a few minutes without doing any action whatsoever(just stare at the desktop) flickering will not occur.

3.Flickering never occurs while the monitor runs after initially being turned on, no matter how long it stays turned on.

4.This could be a false correlation but I noticed that if my air conditioning unit(which is positioned right above the monitor) has run for a while and then I turn the monitor on it has a much greater chance off flickering.

5.If I open a new tab in internet browser(firefox) with a middle mouse button the chance of flickering occurr... Read more

Answer:Monitor flickering

Rather than turning the monitor power switch off, I suggest you use Power Options to turn it off after a selectable time delay of no activity. A simple movement of the mouse or any key on the keyboard turns it back on.

I don't know this will make a difference, but its worth a try. See the screen shot

Question: Monitor Flickering

Using ASUS motherboard with 1.8 ghz AMD Athlon,
Elixir PC3200 memory 1 gb (actually 1024 but it only recognizes 1 gb)
Had a generic 32 mb video card, couldn't play some games, so I bought a 128 mb Radeon 9200 SE. Got monitor flickering, thought it was a cheap ENVISION monitor. SO I am using my mom's Sony monitor, Trinitron model, about 3-4 years old. Monitor flickering is still there. I upgraded the video card and this causes monitor flickering? I tried changing refresh rate, it goes up to 85. I decreased the pixel size on the monitor just now and refresh rate goes up to 100, it seems to be beter now, what is the weak link, monitor? Or can you tell? I have 350 w power supply I believe.Click to expand...

Answer:Monitor Flickering

I downloaded all drivers, tested with more than one monitor, both are used. The problem is most evident when the screen is on a white page, like google or yahoo, when the page is all white. Flickering is worst then. When the screen is dark, flickering is not a problem, this is after I upgraded from a generic 32mb ram video card to a 124 mb raedon.

to check:
1: go to display properties, either via right clicking desktop or control panel
2:settings tab
3: click advandced
4:click monitor, and then check out the hertz level, as far as i know, 60 is the best to go with, but it may be differnt then ob your monitor, but try 60 and see if it helps, if not, maybe you should enlis the help of a tv repair or something.

Question: Monitor Flickering

Hi i am back with another problem. This time around its my monitor. Its been behaving erratically for a while but it just got worse. Earlier it used to flicker as if there is a current flickering problem but that is apparently not the case. While flickering a few black lines start dancing accross the screen and the screen size starts reducing and becoming normal.
Now in addition to the above after flickering a few times the screen goes blank reducing to a single blue line in the center of the screen. I tried switching off the monitor and turn it back on. I even shut down the entire computer but the line would appear even on reboot. The problem stays as long as i dont give the monitor a whack on the side that is when it comes back to normal. I have searched the forums but did not manage to find anything of much relevence.

One more thing earlier i would reattach the connections a bit in case the flickering persisted for too long and it would become ok but start again after about 30 mins

For information i am using a LG Studioworks 552V 15 inch CRT Screen on a ATi Radeon Xpress 200 series graphic card

Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks

Things to check

is it plugged in securely to the vid plug on the back of computer

do you have the latest drivers

are the settings correct - one would guess that the factory settings would be correct for the monitor that it came with.

Since it works fine with the old computer, my guess is that it is going to be a minor problem and you should be able to solve it. Do you have a monitor to hook up to the new computer to see if it does it with another monitor. A setting of 75 should be fine if the card supports that refresh rate. You could always lower it to 60 which is a minimal rate to double check it...doc

I have a X2gen monitor and it keeps flickering on and off every other second.. Does anyone know if I need an updated driver for it and so can you give me the link? Thanks.

Answer:Monitor Flickering

This company went broke in 2007 and support is no longer available. I quote directly from this site :

http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?p=87373

"This monitor did not ship with a driver because it's not required, it's plug and play with Windows XP.
If you're having problems with your monitor display, maybe you need to update your video & graphics adapter driver"

If I were you, I'd take the simpler approach and try another monitor,.. they're quite cheap now and most people have a spare old monitor or two tucked away in their garage.

Question: Monitor Flickering

My monitor colors are flickering. Every few seconds or so the white flickers and is replaced with a dull yellow color.

Recently I replaced the fan on my video card with a different one. We had to splice the connecting plug onto the new fan from the old fan to make it fit. The new fan was from an older video card.

Could this be the problem? Would I be better off without a fan? Originally the video card had a fan and a heat sink.

Could this problem be from overheating, or a power drain or something from the new fan?

Is my video card dying?

Is this no big deal?

I just recently replaced the motherboard and the hard drive on this system.

Answer:Monitor Flickering

The problem is unlikely to be related to the fan.

The problem sounds like momentary loss of either one color signal, or that one color is being lost intermittently within the monitor.

The most common cause is a poor connection with the video cable, make sure its fully plugged in each end.

The next most common cause is a poor solder connection -somewhere- in the monitor (also known as a "dry joint"), these are almost impossible to locate as to the naked eye they often look fine.

A gentle (but firm) whack to the side of the monitor case can influence the latter. If that is the case, a new monitor would usually be cheaper than fault-finding.

Posting the monitor make and model would have been a good idea though.
Check the cable first.

Question: Monitor flickering

Hi,I have a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930 monitor which is just over 2 years old. The screen has started bouncing and sometimes goes completely black with a white line through the middle.Sometimes it will be fine for days and then one day will start playing up. It might go a few days with no problems before it starts again.A hard bang on the side of the monitor seems to put things right. Does anybody know whats wrong and whether it is worth repairing. Thanks

Answer:Monitor flickering

What's wrong is a faulty component, or more likely a bad solder joint, in the monitor. It may be worth repairing - you will have to get a quote from a monitor repairer. If it's only 2 years old, it may still be under warranty - most monitor manufacturers warranty their products for 3 years - many warranties are on-site too.I suggest you look out the original documentation, as it will probably tell you the length of warranty, and arragements (where to call, etc).

I have an Envision EN5600 LCD monitor that I have had for about 2 years. About a week or so ago I began to notice a very slight flickering issue that happened at random points and without explanation. It happens every 5 minutes or so but it can be less or more. The flicker is basically unnoticeable but appears to look like a slight movement in a line near the top third of the monitor or the bottom third. I have changed the refresh rate down to its lowest setting (60 Mhz) but to no avail. Could this be a video card problem? I recently installed the newest nVidia drivers but I didn't notice a real correlation. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi,
I have recently assembled a new PC and decided to use my old monitor (LG 15' 563N). The PC configuration is ASUS P5KPL-CM(board)/CORE2 DUO/2 GB DDR2. Also I have installed a graphic card Nvidia Geoforce 9500.

Now the problem is that, my monitor regularly flickers on and off. I can see the same situation when the system is under booting process and NO OS is laoded at that time ( I can easily verfy this when I pause the BIOS POST operation). When I uninstall card from the board and connect the monitor to the on-borad gafic port it is working fine. Though some times my monitor again flikers ON/OFF when connected to on-board grafic port, but this happen very rarley. I have never seen this problem with my old pc.

So Please, could any one say what can be the problem and fix. Is it a board problem or grafic card problem? Do I need to change some setting under BIOS?

Please Help, Bcz I have spend a bit amount on grafic card that is now un-usable( I would return it if it was possible).

Hi everyone,

Since I set up the second monitor, both of them flicker randomally. The left one flickers more frequently (blue connection in the image)

- I worked with each one of them separately without them flickering
- They've been both connected separately in the same way (ports, adapters etc) without flickering
- I tried disconnecting the keyboard, which was newly added to the setup along with the dual-monitors, but it's unrelated
- I think it might have to do with CPU usage; when I rendered the video, it flickered more frequently

I have a monitor here that started flickering pretty much out of nowhere. The screen kind of shakes or vibrates. The most recent change was installing McAfee anti-virus, but that was a number of days ago. Is it a video card problem or a monitor problem (or something else completely?)

Answer:Monitor flickering issues

Frankly, 6 years service is exceptional.
You shouldn't be "worried" as such, after all, we all have to go some time.

Check the VGA cable's security at both ends (graphic card plug/socket and monitor end).
You can try giving the cable a gentle flex while it's operational.
Sometimes the wiring/joints break down and are repairable/replaceable.

Also check the power cable > try a different one.

Hello guys, I recently got a problem with both of my monitors which are samsung SMBX2050 (LED), as the main, and SyncMaster 2033sw. My OS is windows 7 professional 64-bit with Intel Core 2 Duo E8500, 4GB of RAM and my VGA card is NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT and running in 1600 x 900, true color, 60 Hz. It has been happening since 2 days ago when the main (LED) one suddenly flickers which my screen goes to the LCD syncmaster one and I need to go to screen personalization and click 'Detect' to make it back to the normal. After a while about 5 mins, it flickers again. The last time when this problem occurred, I was watching TV through windows media centre and maximised the TV on my LED screen, which I normally use to play it on my LCD (second monitor) for about 2 hours, I don't know whether this caused the problem or not. And secondly, I was doing some cleaning with mini vacuum cleaner to clean all of the dust from the CPU's casing without opening the case. I am currently using the LED one, without the LCD one as my second monitor, and no problem appears up to now. Any idea how to solve this? It would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! By the way, I have never done any overclocking before, should I go to BIOS and check about it?

Answer:Dual monitor, one keeps flickering, help please!

hi and welcome to the forums

first off my advice cleaning with a vacuum cleaner is not a wise thing to do it will cause static and could possibly cause damage to electronic devices in the case.
its always best to shut down the pc pull power cord out press on/off switch for 8 seconds (discharge power from psu and m/b) and use the proper air dusters in a can to clean inside the case there are retailers you can buy cans from for a decent price (i use amazon for mine ?10 for 4 x 400ml.)
have you updated the graphics card lately? if not go to NVIDIA Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers website and get latest driver/software for your model.
also worth re-seating the graphics card (shuting pc down turn off power pull plug out press power button open case touch non painted part of case to discharge static from yourself ! pull card out then re-seat it close case up reconnect power plug turn on pc)

The edges of the windows in Win7 are flickering occasionally, especially visible on white or black backgrounds.

I've checked for nearby EM distortion, moved my cellphone, headphones and the PC itself as far as I can manage and the problem seems to come and go. Did I just get a crap monitor ?

Hello,

I recently bought an Acer x223w monitor which is "vista optimized" - I assumed it would be backwards compatible with XP, which I run, but the screen regularly flickers to black (essentially turning off for about a second at a time) when I'm in XP (the problem doesn't occur if I'm running games). Looking around online indicates that XP is indeed the problem, but I haven't found any solutions.

I was planning on upgrading to windows 7 once it came out, and now I'm thinking of getting the free release candidate now to see if that resolves the issue. I thought I'd check here first, though. Does anyone have another solution (all things being equal I'd rather hang on to XP for the time being)?

Thanks so much for your advice!

Any advice please on this problem that is driving me mad. AS soon as you turn on the pc the monitor starts flickering from the top down to the middle.I have checked connection cable etc. I did notice my monitor has a menu button, which when pushed brings up a box with various things which are double dutch to me. this flickering last the whole day. It is 2 years old and I have windows xp. Any help welcome. Thanks.

Answer:monitor screen flickering

It appears you have alter the Refresh rate, which should be 85MHz to eliminate flicker for the vast majority of users.Right click on the Desktop>Properties>Settings tab>Advanced button>Adapter tab>Click on List All Modes. This lists all the colour settings/resolution/refresh rates that your monitor will support using your graphics card.Select the most appropriate (say 32bit colour/1024x768/85MHz refresh rate) from the list for a 17in monitor and OK your way out of the Display Properties. This will reset the monitor and should eliminate the flickering.By the way this is for a CRT and not TFT monitor...:-)
