Preferred Solution: Can`t read a safe e-mail attachment

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have Win98SE and IE6.I have received an e-mail with an attachment which I know is safe as it was expected.I have clicked and double clicked on the paperclip but it just gives me the text message in the e-mail.In OE6 > Tools > Options > Security I have unchecked `Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened etc`.What am I doing wrong? In a similar vein if I receive a text e-mail which requires answers to questions how do I write the answers after the questions so that I can send questions and answers back to the sender?Apologies if I am being a bit thick.

Answer:Can`t open safe e-mail attachment

If you are on IE6 click on Tools> Options > Security and then make sure that the box for "Do not allow attachments" etc is unchecked.

Completely baffled. I've sync'd Windows mail with my Gmail account, everything back and forth is fine. Trying to send email w/attachments from Word 2003 results in nothing-no error, no nothing. I have the 'mail' icon on Word 2003 set, I can access the 'send to mail recipient' on 'file' so that I can enter email addresses to send the attached file to whomever-but when I click Send...nothing. I am absolutely at my wits end, and I can't self diagnose this to fix it. Again, my Gmail and Windows Mail are sync'd fine-can send msgs back and forth. About to blow a gasket on this, have depositions to send and can't! thanks so much

Hi when receiving or sending attachments with photos in it a message comes up saying. Windows Mail Removed access to the following unsafe attachment in you mail. I am now unable to receive my attachments which have photos in it or sent attachments with photos in it.

I know that the attachments are not unsafe.
Can someone please help me with this problem

Answer:Windows Mail Removed access to the following unsafe attachment in you mail

Try this in Windows mail go to the tools tab>safety>security>uncheck do not allow attachments that can be harmful.

If you try this option and it indeed works, think about what you have just done. You get a virus attachment, you will probably open it.

Take care.

Question: E-mail attachment

I have just received an E-mail, from a known source, with an attachment. On clicking the paper clip I get the dailogoe box with "Open" and "Save" options but only in a "washedout" form. As expected clicking on either of the options has no effect. Is there anything that I can do at my end? The sender is not highly computer literate. Ideas please.

Answer:E-mail attachment

You don't say which email program you're using but, if it's Outlook Express, go into "Tools > Options", select the Security tab and make sure the box "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" is *NOT TICKED*.

I have a Gateway laptop. I use a hotmail account through MSN. I went to attach a pdf file to an e-mail and the word is there but it is grey and will not let me click on it. Funny because when I go into my hotmail account on our old PC, I can use it?! I've certainly done this in the past and had no problem. What could it be? I tried getting some answers from Windows Live and they said make sure Microsoft Silverlight was enabled.......it is. I'm at a loss!

This file is compressed like a "Zip" file. You need to go here http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander/index.html and download Stuffit Expander to uncompress it and then you can read it with Adobe Acrobat.

Question: E-mail attachment

when sending an e-mail with attachements on G-mail, I click on attach files icon and it takes me to "my documents" . from there I would find the appropriate folder and document that I wish to e-mail..
That's all find and dandy. Now I want to attach another file, so I click on the "files icon" and it takes me back to "my documents"...
Normally when I click on "file icon" it would take me back to the last folder from which I made an attachment which is what I would like..
Is there any way to fix this ?

Answer:E-mail attachment

I am not aware of a solution, but a possible workaround could be creating shortcuts in the my documents folder pointing to common locations of the files you wish to attach. Opening the shortcut from the file window will go to the location.

You may wish to send gmail a feature request for the last location:

Just found my way to this site......what a great bunch of people on these boards. I've not been able to find an answer for my problem though. I've got a new computer and just started using XP. Whenever I want to send a link to someone it sends as an attachment instead of just displaying the link in an e-mail. I'm using OE and never had this problem before. I've searched through all the properties trying to find out how to change this but can't seem to find anything. I suppose I could just type the address in but would prefer to find an answer. Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:A different e-mail attachment ?

I have found it happening to me in Outlook 2000, but only when I Right-click a link, and choose Copy Link.

Pasting it into Outlook will give me an attachment, but I think it's because it is copying some html tag as well.

If I copy the link from the address bar and paste it to Outlook,, it pastes as a link with no bother.

I usually delete the attachment when it happens, paste it to notepad, recopy it it, and then paste to the mail, and all works.

Question: E-mail Attachment

I have been told to attach a text document as a zip file. Do I need to use Win zip or similar to do this, or is there a valid way to change the file extension of the document to accomplish this? I am using an older version of Microsoft Word (version 6.0). Thanks for any help.

Answer:E-mail Attachment

Beano
Welcome to TSG!
Attaching a Word Doc converted to a Zip file reduces the size of that original file. This procedure is done routinely if the original file is rather large and needs to be reduced for transmission.
Do you need to zip compress the file? Maybe if the file is rather large such as 200KB or larger and the recipient has a dial-up connection. Remember if one zips a file the reciever of that file must have the utility to unzip before they view. There are zip utilities available for download that will handle this procedure and Winzip is one. www.winzip.com
Why you were told to zip I do not understand unless the file size was prohibited.

Also you cannot just change the file extension to accomplish compression, (zipping a file). You must have the utility to do this.

Can anyone advise? It seems that every e-mail I send has an attachment included, needless to say it is not suppose to there!!!!The details are :OISgiffile. 145 bytesFrom: 65.55.138.121It doesn't seem to have been picked up by my virus checker or the Hotmail virus checker so I have done a Norton full system scan which has found a few tracking cookies and a Trojan which it cleared, but it still seems to be happening.Has anyone any knowledge of such events? Thanks.

Looks like you're trying to send a picture in the form of a .gif file, but that IP address does not rings any bells. Are you using any form of template for your emails?

How safe to open these .exe files??

I emailed some Excel 2000 .xls files from my work computer to my home computer. I'm wary about opening them because 6 out of 7 of them have arrived at home as .exe files.

Many, but not all, of these files have lots of vlookups or possible filtering. Would vlookups or filtering cause the file to change to an .exe file? ie Is it probable they are safe to open?

A quick response would be much appreciated, since I'm hoping to do lots of work at home tonight!

Answer:Excel .xls email attachment received as .exe file.Safe?

I don't like the sounds of it. Are you using Winzip--possibly turning them into self-extracting zip files?

Try going to www.freedrive.com or www.driveway.com and sign up for some free web space. Upload your files, then download them when you get home. At least until you find out why it's doing that!

Answer:Mail attachment problem

Hi

I don't use Windows Mail so I can't say exactly where in the Options to go, but first thing is to make sure there is no option in there that will stop any attachments from being sent. Then check your AV program to make sure it's not blocking attachments as well and report back.

click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program"
find the file type / extension of the attachment from the list if it ius there and select change program.

Save the file attachment, open the foilder you saved it to and right click it.

I have one person who regularly sends me e-mail, and instead of forwarding the message he's received and wants to pass on, he attaches the message to a new message (strange way of doing it). The attachment always comes with the extension ".email", which my system doesn't recognize/won't open. I have to change it to ".eml", which is a registered file type; then it will open. I tried establishing a new file type for the .email extension, but all that happens when I double-click a file with that extension is that Outlook Express opens...but the message doesn't.

1st question: Why are the attachments coming with .email instead of .eml extensions?

2nd: If .email is an accepted extension, what do I have to do to get OE to recognize and open it?

Several months ago I started having problems sending attachments using my yahoo e-mail account on my laptop(Dell M series running XP). If I tried to send a word doc that was greater than say half a MB to someone it started taking increasingly longer periods of time for the file to be attached to the e-mail. Once it was attached it could be sent no problem. Finally it started taking upwards of an hour and I obviously couldn't wait this long so I stopped sending attachments. I also had the same problem using a gmail account as well as a web based version of Outlook. I have this problem with both Explorer and Firefox browsers and if I copy the files I want to send over to my thumb drive and take them to another machine and use the same yahoo or gmail accounts they attach in seconds and there is no problem. I talked to my ISP and they say they can see no problems from their end. Also, I tried disabling my security software thinking that perhaps the virus scan was causing this proces to slow down but this idea didn't pan out either. I can attach notepad and other small files easily and every once in awhile my machine "allows" me to attach a "large" word file (> 1 MB) with only a small delay in the attachment process. I have no idea what is causing this problem-any ideas?

Answer:e-mail attachment problem

Ensure that you have saved and closed the document .... and the program used to create it .... before trying to attach it.

Try attaching the file then, to the email and see how you go.

Failing that, it may be the antivirus scan that is taking a long time .... It is not a simple matter, to disable the antivirus residential scan .... in fact, I think you would have to completely uninstall the antivirus program to actually check if this might be the problem.

Hello,

Setup is a P2P LAN, 3 workstations running Win2K Pro, Linksys BEFSR41 router connected (PPPoE, automatic IP, DHCP server) to Alcatel modem. No apparent LAN problems, Internet connection OK, clean machines (no virus, spyware, or other shitware).

The problem is with e-mail. I'm using O.E., 2 POP3, 1 SMTP, Norton e-mail scan. I can receive e-mail (w or w/o attachments) from any of the 2 POP3 mailboxes. I can also send E-mail messages.

Now, any e-mail bearing an attachment CANNOT be sent. At one point, Norton scanning progress bar stops, then Norton complains about not having received a response from the SMTP server.

I disabled outgoing mail scanning. Same thing, except that the mail didn't leave Outbox and that OE complained about a timeout (Socket error: 10053, error code: 0x800CC0F).

Norton AV was then removed, then the firewall (ZoneAlarm): To no avail.

I tried splitting the messages (In OE, Accounts/Advanced/Break Apart...): Nah.

I reset the router: No go.

What worked out was to bypass the router, install PPPoE on one machine and connect directly to the DSL modem. It goes without saying, such a setup is NOT acceptable.

Connecting everything back as it was and resetting the router again didn't solve the problem.

This is indeed a networking issue. Any thoughts?

P.S. I'm going to change the router, just in case. But without much hope...

Hi Snowflake10,

What you could possibly do is put all the files in one folder and zip it up and send it that way as one attachment or possibly what you could do is try a different browser like Google Chrome, Firefox? see if you still get the same error also take a look here on how to add attachments and email them.

I received an e-mail with an attachment I can't open. When I click on it, a box comes up that tells me to go to "My Computer/Options", then create an association to open it with.

Can someone tell me how to do that, please?

I was trying to send a file to my friend with an attachment of 10MB.
However, I got a reply from [email protected], saying that my mail was fail to sent,
though I have waited for an hour for it to finish attaching my file.
Im using Yahoo Mail Beta, and the recipent is using a yahoo email address too.

Does anyone know what's the problem?
Is it the file is too big?
What is the best method to send big files?

Thanks

Answer:Yahoo Mail- Attachment

It's possible that the file size is too big. Check Yahoo and see their file attachment limit.Depending on the file size, your email will work fine. You also can:a. ftp transfer the fileb. upload the file to a remote server, then give it's locationc. create a .torrent file and email the torrent file. But, from my last known experience, you may be maxed out already at 10M. I may be incorrect, but not too many email servers allow attachments larger than that. Even that exact size may be too big to email through some email accounts. And always remember this: Even if you can send large attachments by email, the receiving person's email account may not allow it, and it'll reject it, so verify their limit too.

Will a anti virus scan detect a virus within an e-mail attachment that has not been opened ?
I am running InoculateIT PE version 5.0.0.27, major dat file v200, minor date file v353, win/98 and OE 5.00.2919.6600. I have four copies of the ILOVEYOU virus on my system. I have not opened any of these attachments, but I left them on the system so I could test my anti virus software and my own checking procedures. I have InoculateIT set to test all file types and the minor dat file that was supposed to detect this virus was several updates ago.
When I run a virus scan, I get the message "no virus detected". I have scanned all of C drive and scanned just the e-mail folders with the same result.
Can a virus be detected without opening the attachment ?
Is it something that I have setup wrong ?
Is it time to fire my anti virus software and shop for a new one ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Gordon

does the person having the problem opening the attachments have the "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" box ticked, which can be found on the 'security' tab under 'tools' and then 'options' on outlook express?

Answer:E-mail attachment download

Before we can provide you any assistance, you need to go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx and install "Service Pack 1" This will patch numerous security holes in IE and Windows. Many baddies get on your machine by taking advantage of these vulnerabilities. As your machine stands now it is wide open to attack from all sorts of nasties. You need to get these updates before we proceed or we will be wasting our time.

DO NOT install Service pack 2 yet. If you install SP2 on an infected machine, it will cause serious problems. Just get Service Pack 1 installed then come back here and post a new Hijack This log.

Hi delt309
No it doesnt matter if the attachment is on your hard drive or your floppy drive. If you open it the same programs will run and your computer will be infected.

I have sent an image as an a-mail attachment but the recipient cannot open it. I have sent it in various formats (jpg, png, bmp, pspimage) but to no avail. The image was created in PSP8 and the recipient does not have this - would this be the problem? They do have other image editing software which can usually open images with the open extensions without any problem. Any ideas? I have also saved the image to floppy with the above dile extensions, and then tried to open the floppy/image on the recipients PC - again it does not open.

Answer:E-mail image attachment cannot be opened.

When you say "cannot open it" do you mean..Can't save or open the attachment in there email client, or once saved to disk they can't open itthe reasons for both are completly different. If its can't save or open in email client this can be solved in (assuming Outlook Express) tools> options> security tab & uncheck don't allow attacthments. If its can't open once saved to disk, does anything give a error message ?. or if using XP right click on file if its blocked unblock it

My operating system is Windows XP utilizing Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 6.

Upon opening the attachment on certain e-mails from people I know, the following window appears and I cannot open the attachment!

" This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create
an association in the folder option control panel"

I can find and open the control panel folder option, but have no idea how to proceed from there! Does one have to repeat this procedure (however you instruct me to proceed) with every e-mail that presents this problem?

Thanks as usual for your assistance.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious but I can't seem to find a "forward as attachment" option in Windows 10 Mail App.
I used it extensively in Windows Live Mail. Has the option been removed?

Answer:Windows 10 Mail App - Forward as Attachment

Windows 10 Mail app is no where near the calibre of Windows Live Mail.

If you require sophisticated features such as "forward as attachment", please stay with WLM.

I use WLM since it's introduction. I have no intention to use the rudimentary Mail app.

$smtp->datasend("\n");
$smtp->datasend("A simple test message\n");
$smtp->dataend();
exit;

Answer:Solved: How do I add an attachment to this e-mail code?

There isn't a specific method for Net::SMTP for attachments but you could have a routine to load an attachment, convert to MIME format and then use the datasend() method to include it.

See http://perldoc.perl.org/MIME/Base64.html

Hi guys,

I inadvertently opened a PDF document in Gmail as it appeared to be from someone I knew.  The document reverted to the Gmail log in page so I entered my Gmail password.  My account was consequently hacked as the same e-mail was sent to all of my contacts.  Therefore, I am concerned that a keyword logger or Trojan is on my computer as e-mails were being sent after I had changed my password.  Could you please advise how I can check if my computer is clean.

I have a problem in a newly set up Vista Home Basic computer, attachments are apparently not being found to open or save them.

When I click open or save, it opens Word then tells me it can't find the file. I can't find the file location it says it can't find either, but I can't find a temp file where the attachments are held in the system, nor where to tell the computer where they should be put.

Do you have Internet Explorer 9 ( IE9 ) ?
If yes........
Double click at the e-mail that is supposed to contain an attachment.
The e-mail should now open in its own window.
Do you see the " paper clip " now ?

Hi,

I opened an attachment on Windows Mail and began working on it for a few hours...Pressing SAVE at regular intervals. When I wanted to forward the altered attachment, I closed my document and could not find it anywhere on my computer. I realize that I could been a lot smarter and pressed SAVE AS and I would have avoided this problem, but I was wondering If the saved file is somewhere on my computer...and therefore recoverable.

I find it strange that If I was saving all that time to nowhere, that it would not just prompt me to save it on my hard drive...Does anybody know where opened windows mail attachments are saved to by default?

Much thanks to anyone who could help...
