Preferred Solution: Menus missing in Word 97 after crash.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

can anyone asisst me cos this is a new one on me, one of my clients is running xp home with office 2000.
everytime he opens a drop down menu it causes the application to crash, tries re install etc to no gain.

any assistance would be appreciated.

Answer:word 2000 drop down menus causes it to crash!!!!

Is this in all Office applications or just one? If it's Word, problems of that sort are fixed about 95% of the time by doing a search of the harddrive for "" and deleting all found. Word will create a new one next time it's opened. (It's a hidden file so be sure "Show hidden files and folders" is checked in Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab), the global template for Word, isn't installed when Word is installed; it's created the first time Word is opened. That's why a reinstall won't affect

help! again!I opened up my word proram yestereday and found that all my toolbars AND menus are gone from the page. The page does open and I can type in it but besides the horizontal and vertical rulers nothing else is displayed in the window. There is no "File" or "Tools" or anything to click on along the top. And all the various toolbar icons are gone! What has happened? and how can I get them back? I have tried going to Microsoft's website to download any updates and I also re-installed Office 2000 but neither has worked. Am I just missing something obvious?Any help would be appreciated. I have Windows 98, by the way, if that tells you anything.

I am unable to see any menus when I launch Microsoft Word 2000 (running Windows 98). Since I remember Ctrl-P for print, I can still print, but I can't look through my menus for commands I do not recall. I have uninstalled & reinstalled Word twice, and it opens up the same way (without a menu bar).

I am not aware of doing anything that would have caused this (but share the PC with my kids, so who knows?). Any help would be much appreciated - the homework season has started & is tough with a crippled word processor

Click View, toolbars, I guess these are what you mean. You can't find the standard and Formatting toolbars.

I'm using Word 2003 to make forms. This problem has just cropped up. When I make a dropdown list everything seems fine. However when I go to use the list you cannot make the first item on the list show up when you click on it. If you move another item to the top of the list then it becomes the item which you can't click on. It's on the list just nothing happens. I ran the Office repair program but it made no difference

I am running microsoft Word on a NEC laptop o/s XP professional.

When working on a word document the dropdown menus (file, edit, view etc) will drop down without being selected or having the cursor anywhere near. Neither have the shortcuts ie: "alt F" "alt e" been touched. They sometimes drop down when neither keyboard or mouse are being touched.

A full updated virus scan with McAfee has been done.

Answer:word - drop down menus

Sounds like Office may have the "speech to text" option enabled, in "command mode"

The laptop may have a built-in microphone, which is picking up background noise and interpreting it as commands.

A long shot, but it would explain the activity.

Disable the feature, or the microphone?

Certain menu items in Word (I am using Word 2002 SP3 on a Win XP/Pro SP2 machine), have single characters underlined. These underlined characters are clearly not related to the keyboard shortcuts for the commands.

For example, in the Page Setup dialog box, T, B, f, and g are underlined in the Top, Bottom, Left and Right margin field descriptions.

What, if any, significance do these underlined characters have?

I have searched this forum without success (perhaps I did not use the correct search criteria). I also have the 1100+ page Word Inside Out book, and I did not find any reference to this question in that book.

Answer:Underlined characters in Word menus

Press ALT+ <letter> to open the menu item.

Example: ALT + F

opens the File menu.

I am using Microsoft Office XP Professional - WORD and EXCEL
When I click on any of the Menu options - all that appears is a shadowy line at the right hand side and base of where you would expect the menu options to display i.e. the size varies for each menu item, there are no menu items listed.
I've had a read through other posts on the site to see if anything applies and can tell you:
- I can happily edit the document
- All the EXCEL and WORD shortcuts work i.e. F& conducts a spell check in word, F12 allows Save as
- I have searched for (clicking on the widows icon in the lower right of screen and entering in the search box) and can't find it!? a number of word document. A number (say 20) of seemingly random word documents re listed i.e. documents that I have created all with a file type of Microsoft Word Document
Many Thanks

I can create one by using the Drop down form field but it will only let me put a certain amount of text in there.

Is there a way I can do this?

I dont want to do auto texts just the drop down.

After installing and then uninstalling (because of BSOD) the fubar'd security patch from last week, I now can not get right click menus anywhere. Nothing happens when I RT click. I've googled and gotten many hit on single missing items but nothing on all missing items.

It seems my registry is broke, under.
HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex it contains "(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)" that's all

HKCR\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers "REG_SZ (value not set)"
\DesktopDockShellExt "REG_SZ (value not set)"

Then several apps have there menus add on listed all with data in them. It seems to me I'm missing some data points in these registry blocks. Dose anyone know what is supposed to be in there?

Win 7 x64 system

Answer:Missing / No Right Click Menus.

Hello Indie, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you able to expand (double click on) the HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex key to have the ContextMenuHandlers and PropertySheetHandlers subkeys under shellex?

As a test to see if your context menus may just be disabled instead, see if using step 1 in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below may be able to help afterwards.

I am having trouble sending mail and info on web seems to advise it is my SMTP settings. Problem is that I don`t seem to have the OUTGOING SERVERS pointer on the Accounts Settings or Options. I have Server Settings but that only allows me to choose default Server.

Has anyone else had this problem ? Is it likely to be the result of security settings or browser interference or something like that. I can`t see anything on the Mozilla advice pages about this.

Answer:Thunderbird missing menus

I can`t find the replies that were here yesterday, although I have emails of them in my gmail account.

I was asked to provide further information. Here it is

In Gandi I have a domain with 5 free email accounts. I have used 4 of these recently to set up new email addresses. Gandi only collects mail and forwards it to servers, not to email clients, as I understand it because it only deals with mail boxes. I set these up to use POP 3 as suggested by gandi.
I have set up gmail to collect mail with gandi addresses by adding the gandi accounts to

on gmails Settings: accounts page.

On the gmail site, I have sent an email from the primary gandi address to my husband (who has a computer in the next room with separate email account with Yahoo). It arrived almost immediately . And I have sent and received one from his address to primary gandi address without a problem.

But if I write one in Thunderbird to my husband, it is rejected with An error occurred sending mai with following error mesagel:

The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: +OK Gpop ready for requests from d6pf35627393eev.7.

So I think it must be the Thunderbird settings that are incorrect. As I said I cannot check the SMTP settings on Thunderbird because I cannot find the menu. It is not where it is supposed to be. When I go on to Account settings, I find the menu for using default server but nothing... Read more

I am struggling to come to terms with both Windows 7 and IE9. Call me a ludite, but I still prefer XP.. Never mind. More importantly, I do miss the drop down menues that were a feature of previous versions - where, in particular can I now manage my toolbars, ensure everything is locked etc. And finally, is it possible to convert the 'Tools' button into a toolbar?

Answer:Using IE9 - missing drop down menus

You may find this article useful on IE9 features. Don't use it myself as I much prefer Firefox.
Stick with Windows 7 - it really is very good. Have a look at this article about toolbars.
If on the other hand you would prefer to have back some of the XP features, have a look at this article and the options it offers.

after a fresh install of windows 7, I have no context menus anywhere - desktop, apps, all gone. No one seems to have experienced this or else I've missed something major. I'm wondering if this is related to another problem I've noticed also: whenever I try to install certain programs I get an error message stating that the version I'm trying to install is not compatible with Microsoft ME, even though I'm running Win 7. This is installed on a media center style computer though. I know I can live without the context menus, but having them back would sure make life a little easier. Am I all alone here? Hi all, I recently took delivery of a Yoga 2 13", and once I figured out how to get into the BIOS I took a look around and made some notes. Initially the menus were: Debug, Information, Configuration, Main, Advanced, Security, Power, Boot. At some point the contents of the BIOS changed and now Debug, Main, Advanced and Power no longer appear. Does anyone know what might have caused that, and how I can get them back? T.

Hi there,

I am running a Vostro Dell Laptop running Vista and recently I have been having some seperate issues which I'm wondering are due to one major issue. I initially had problems with my Lexmark 1200 printer which stopped communicating with the computer. I solved this once but its immediatly stopped working again. I have now tried to reinstall the original software but no change, this time round I can't get it to work. This has in turn crashed Microsft Word whilst I have been trying to solve the printer. The same day Mozilla Firefox crashed.....I've now got this going again by reinstalling it but I have had to do this several times in the last month. My computer is now running quite slowly and over the las 6 months I have had to reinstall various programmes as they have stopped working for reasons unknown! This is not only becoming frustrating but I'm worried I may have deeper issues. I really just want everything to be working happily again (including my printer which started all this!).....any help gratefully recieved.

Greetings again, and Happy New Year! A few days ago something (or things) bad, found their way onto my Media Center Edition pc. These manifest via a screen with a bold security page telling me that I was possibly infected with viruses, worms, etc. Having had experiences with these screens before, I did not try to exit out, or click on the "close" button. I went to the task mgr 1st where I thought I could kill the screen, but found that the task mgr closed as soon as I opened it. This led me to believe that I did indeed have an infection of some sort, and since it had obviously made it past my antivirus program (avira), I made the decision to reinstall the OS, as this had happened before. My computer is an Empower Media Center brand and runs the Media center version of XP Pro. Once I began the install however, I began to have problems. I started getting messages saying that this file or that could not copy, so I made the decision to put Windows 7 on it instead. This is the RC version, and, having tried it on another computer and found it to be a welcome change to what I had found with Vista, I was more than eager to see how it would perform on this computer. The install went without a hitch - I did a clean install and 7 looked great. I decided to start personalizing it by changing the default theme. That's when I discovered that I have no context menus. I tried right clicking on files, folders, even on my browser, all to no avail. My context menus have simply disappea... Read more

I have a Dell desktop with MS Windows XP Professional, version 2002, service pack 3. The PC info is

Pentium ® 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.79 GHz, 0.99GB of RAM

First, I've tried System Restore and no matter what data I pick, it won't work.

I want to password protect my computer however setting a password only works when I log out the computer. I discovered that if you simple shut down and restart, it won't ask for the password. I wanted to set that ctrl+alt+del thing but when I go to the user account area where it tells me to do that, there is no menu or toolbar to be able to select Advanced Options as the help menu tells me.

Also, if/when my PC freezes while on a web page and I do the ctrl+alt+del to bring up that window that will allow me to End Now, there is no menus there at all. Just a white box and a listing of what's running. There are no buttons or anything so that the only way I can even close that window is to right click on little green chart in next to the time at the bottom of the screen and tell it to close.

Another weird thing is that when I restart the computer, there is a set of little black outlined boxes in the lower right taskbar next to the time and I can only get them to go away by doing ctrl+alt+del. When I do say it makes a "funny" sliding beep sound is the only way I can think to describe it.

I have a feeling I've got a virus or spyware thing going on. And I certainly don't know how to get rid of it. ... Read more

I have an HP Compaq 6200 SFF running 64-bit Windows 10 Pro that won't print to either of two HP printers I have tried.

I have tried an HP OfficeJet 3830 and an HP OfficeJet 4650 and get identical results with both.

I can, though, print to a Canon MP470 (so maybe the brand needs to be non HP-to-HP, ha, ha!).

In all cases, I am using a wired (USB) connection between PC and printer(s).

I have tried two different USB cables, and get the same results with both.

The printer shows up in Control Panel -> Printers and Devices.

I have tried removing and rediscovering the device from 'Printers and Devices' via right-click -> Remove. This has not fixed the problem.

I can scan ok (with either HP printer, and to a file on the PC), but in various apps (browsers, word processors, spreadsheets, MS Paint, etc), but in all cases there is no entry for either HP printer in the Print drop-down menu.

I have tried both: i. printing after allowing the printer to install via plug-and-play; and ii. installed HP's printer drivers. In both cases, the printers are missing from the drop down menus.

In 'Printers and Devices', if I right-click on either of the problematic printers and choose Troubleshoot, the result is 'Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem'.

In 'Printers and Devices', if I right-click on the problematic printer and choose Properties, then Hardware tab, Device Status is, "This device is working properly." There are three entries in the Hardware tab ... Read more

Hi JustSomeGuy. Welcome to the TenForums @JustSomeGuy

Normally HP products like you to install software and when they ask you connect device. Seems like a technicality but worth trying. I would uninstall devices, drivers and software and then retry.

Before doing this I would ensure I had a system image made with your tool or Macrium Reflect (free). Then if something goes wrong you can get back to where you were.

Hey everyone I have a bit of a troubling problem. For some odd reason, my computer is not displaying red at all...except for the monitor menus. I have narrowed it down to some type of connection problem or a motherboard problem by eliminating possibilities. I tried a second monitor and still had issues. Any advice on how to proceed? Before the complete loss of red, it would flicker on and off for a while (2 days before). I tried cleaning out the inside of the case, restoring my computer to a month before, reinstalling the video card drivers, restoring all the monitor settings to the original ones, tweaking the actual video color settings. So, if any of you have any ideas how to go forward, it would help a lot. Thanks beforehand.

Things I have done:
Set a new theme, updated and reinstalled video card drivers, SFC scan and no errors. Reset video card settings for users.

First backup important on to atlas a 10gb USB or more, then download windows 10 64 bit is from get into pc then use rufus to put the image on a different USB drive. AT LEAST 20gigs. Then boot from the USB with the windows 10 on it, then go through the setup process. Afterthat, you can copy all of the data on the other usb. If this does not help, Contact Windows support.

I have just tried to burn a DVD from data that I extracted from a VCD (so I could create a nice menu and chapters etc for the beginning) However, it went through 2h 30m of converting the VCD data to be able to burn it to DVD and then failed when it came to burning the DVD.

It said that the burn process failed and saved an error log for me (attached) I checked before I started the burn that the disc wasn't written and it was totally blank, and it was.#

Perhaps it has something to do with my previous problem with nerovision I discovered this morning?

Previous Problem - Hi everyone

I recently installed Nero 7 Ultra version which works perfectly, Nero 7 is much better than the 5 I got with my computer a year ago.

Anyway, NeroVision (the DVD authoring program) has templates for the menu's of DVDs and SVCDs but the pre-stalled backgrounds and templates that come with the CD appear to not work. The files are in the Nero windows folder but the pictures (if you click on them) say "no preview available" like they're blank files or corrupt or something. I've tried a full reinstall of nero 7 ultra twice and it's not fixed the problem.

Unless my disc is broken? I don't really know what else could be the problem. Or perhaps I could just delete the template files and get them from somewhere else? Or install them over the top of the corrupt/empty files?

When Word97 is opened, in WIndows98se, it is a blank doc with no menus or toolbars at the top. I thought there was a F key that would hide the toolbars, but I struck out there. I renamed, to no avail as well. I am sure this is much more simple than uninstalling/reinstalling.

Thanks a ton for the help,

Answer:Word97 toolbars and menus missing

I found a post from Dreamboat, that worked. I renamed the registry key hkey_current_user\software\office\8.0\word relaunched Word, and all is good again.

On the bottom left of the Taskbar, there are two icons: one gives me the task view and is NOT a problem. I am very new to W10 so I'm not sure how the window icon is supposed to work. If I right click, I get a menu and I understand that. However, if I left click, nothing happens. I suspect I inadvertently changed a setting. I used to get, on the left side of the monitor, when I left clicked, a different menu and some apps that 'looked' like W8. Can someone help me get back to this point please? If I'm not being clear in my explanation, please tell me and I will try to clarify.

Answer:Start Menu: One of two menus is missing

looks a windows systemfile is broken,

Use SFC to check and repair windows systemfiles.

See this tutorial SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8
SFC Command - Run in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Tutorials

If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 times restarting the PC after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.

If not, then run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command to repair any component store corruption, restart the PC afterwards, and try the sfc /scannow command again.

When I select any menu on the menu bar, the drop down menu slowly fades in over several seconds then pops up. This just started happening and I don't know what I did to cause it.

Would appreciate your advice.

This is curious. I finally have the time to post an inquiry.

Back in December, I went to open my Windows Task Manager (a program had froze), and I noticed that the menu tabs at the top were missing. I don't know why or how this happened. Is there anyway to get them back?
I've included a screen shot (I hope that worked anyway) of how it displays now. Fortunately I figured out that by hitting the Esc key, the task manager window will close.

the only options i have under Layout is menu bar and navigation pane

how do i like vista you say? gee, it feels exactly like this:

Answer:Missing reading pane, classic menus?

You just want the classic look of windows? is that right?
You can turn off the UAC thing, I did.
hit "windows key"-r and type in msconfig. go to tools and scroll down to select disable UAC. click launch. now just restart the computer.

I think this is related to tiles disappearing on the start menu. It feels like a graphic bug.

Hi, you may find the following of interest, if not of immediate help, but it may suggest something..
As it turns out, the data for the Jump List items isn’t in the registry at all, but in the user’s AppData. Specifically, in a collection of files in %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations. There’s one file per application; I had a somewhat magical 42 files in mine. I noted that there is also a similar folder called %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations, with fewer files in it, and which I suspect contains a cache of Jump List items that have been added programmatically by each application (such as the ‘Play All Music’ command on Media Player’s Jump List.
The files in these folders don’t have particularly useful names, but if you open them in Notepad the contents will give you a clue as to what program each one belongs to (note: don’t edit the files directly). When I compared the folder on different machines it was clear the names are the same for each application.
The file for Explorer.exe was actually the first in the list for me, and is called 1b4dd67f29cb1962.automaticDestinations-ms. The solution was simple; delete the file. As soon as I had removed it, I was able to re-pin folders, the removed file was recreated, and my life was once again sane.

I don't see any of the usual Menu tabs, such as file, edit, view, go etc. There is no help tab to see if I actually got the finished Ie7. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the beta. It wasn't supposed to be. Hi, I've got a slightly odd issue.
I've recently built a new pc (hp dc7800) with XP and office 2007 - the problem I have is that after about 24 hours of use (well left on over night) i wont be able to get any context menus or see the performance tab in the task maniger if it loads at all.
Closing a window usualy lets it work for a short period before it happens again.

The pc is a E6550 with 2gb of ram which should be more than enough memory.

Tried running chkdsk /r from the Start/Run window?

If not, try it and make sure that there is a space between the k and /.

I'm surprised every day by the number of issues that running this command will resolve.

Thanks everyone for the ad. I have a previously stable quad core Asus MB PC which since the most recent Aniversary updates has become almost unusable. Right click menus only display the shadow line and are otherwise invisible. Moving the mouse over them leaves a pointer trail resembling a PaintshopPro paint tube. Hovering over the top right close box sometimes restores the text but this can take up to a minute. Folders in tree menus in Explorer or Outlook don't highlight so one can't be sure if they are selected and even desktop icons are affected, moving one doesn't appear to work but after a [long delay the icon will jump to it's new position. I'm assuming the updates were the culprit as I have reverted to a month old image which doesn't seem affected, however the updates reinstall and it becomes unusable. At the moment I'm using the old image on wifi with metered chosen to hopefully block the automatic updates. I tend to use the Microsoft onscreen keyboard for banking etc and that displays as an empty pane with just a shadow indicating its size. I just downloaded Windows 10 and am having issues with: missing pop-up menus; "Edge" & "Store" apps don't run (open with plain blue screens); I can't access Settings (same problem--I get only a plain blue screen); also Word 7 is buggy (i.e. the minimize button is missing when I have a doc open). From reading other threads here, I decided I should run a System File Check in Windows, but when I right click on the Start button (well...where I assume the start button is--all I have is a black square in the lower right corner!) all I get is a tall rectangle box with an arrow, and no text, no menu choices. When I click on the arrow, I get another tall box with no options.
I have an HP Touchsmart desktop (would like to give more specifics, but the "my computer" file is gone and I don't know where to find that info in 10 yet). I use that the problem? I'd sure appreciate any ideas of where I should go from here. Thank you!

Normally, when I open My Computer and any folder within Windows XP Explorer, there is on the left side of the folder a series of menus, including Create New Folder, Rename Folder, plus towards the bottom left a place where photos are previewed (a preview panel). Well, suddenly, during some of my tweaks, this left side of the folders is missing! The folder simply has a list of the folders. I have looked in the Tools section but cannot find how to restore this left blue panel with all the shortcuts and info.

I have attached a screenshot that shows what I am referring to.

Please, someone, can you help me! This is a most useful tool that is now missing!

Hey guys,

I restarted my PC because of a problem with a webpage, and when I tried to log back on my desktop icons were missing and so were my startup options that are normally on the toolbar. Also, some context menus are missing, all I get are "send to drive F, and E, not desktop or anything.

I restarted again, and now my wallpaper is gone, but some startup options seem to be back.

My icons/folders display when I go to C:/Users/<myname>/Desktop, but don't appear in the actual desktop.

There are probably other screwed up things too.

What's going on? Did I pick up a virus or something?

EDIT: "Set as Wallpaper" is broken also 0_O

Please provide the following info of your Win 10:
OS Build
In case you don't know how to find them......
Start button > Settings > System > left side, at the bottom, About.......
Next window will tell you what you have.
Please post those info.
Thank you.
Meanwhile, do a system file check to look for corrupt files. It will try to do repair if any found.
Assuming right click at Start button still works ?
Right click at Start button > select either Powershell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) >
at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this.....
sfc /scannow
> Enter.
It will take some time. Just wait.
When finished, it will give you one of the following 3 reports:
1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupt files and repaired successfully.
3. Found corrupt files but unable to repair some of them.
Please post back the result.

Windows 7 categorises some Fonts as "Hidden" (based on the language setting).

In the attachment there are "hidden" fonts showing up in MS Word 2010. Is there a setting somewhere I have missed? Or does it just not work?

As a workaround, can I just copy the fonts I do not currently want into another folder, then Delete them from the Fonts folder? Or will that cause problems?

How can I use the wildcard in Word to stand for a single missing word? In the Google search syntax for example, it's very simple if you want to search for a phrase that has a missing word in it, such as "the * of feeling good". However in Word, this syntax does not appear to work - the asterisk just stands for any number of characters, regardless of word boundries. I've followed the instructions in Help and tried using < and > (beginning and ending of a word) in conjunction with the asterisk, but doesn't seem to symbolise a single word either. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

For some reason, the "search" option is missing from the context menu of certain folders. For instance, I have 6 folders in the same parent folder. If I right-click certain ones, "search" (and all the usual items) shows on the context menu. On others folders, it's missing altogether. It may have something to do with the type of content in the folders. i.e. one folder has nothing but fonts in it and the right-click menu has all the usual options including search. A folder right beside it has nothing but icons in it, and "search" (along with several other usual items) is missing.

Question: Word 2003 Crash

I am so new at this stuff! I had completed an assignment for uni saved it to usb data apparatus when word 2003 collaped. What I am left with as a saved doc is 13 pages of crap. I have tried sytem restore and others but no luck yet. Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Word 2003 Crash

System restore is unlikely to fix a mangled application (Word, in this case) disk file. Especially when the files are on an external device, as a USB device is.

System restore might fix some system files, not Word files.

What you want to do is look for how to salvage Word files.
"13 pages of crap" doesn't tell us too much.

As I've been browsing through these Forums I could find quite a few complaints about Word 2007 not working as it should under Windows 7.
Common Problems seem to involve crashes at Startup or when trying to save files.

My Word also crashes a lot, but it happens ONLY WHEN WORD IS TRYING TO AUTOSAVE. When I save manually I have no problems anymore (that's when it used to crash when I was using the RC1).

Basically, as soon as the "autosave" process starts, I get a message saying "Word has encountered an error and will now restart"
Then after a few seconds word closes and restarts, but in the "recovered documents"-List I only have old copies of my file. If i then manually navigate to the autosave folder, I can actually see (and open) the .tmp-Files with the latest changes.

For now I "solved" this by simply deactivating the Autosave feature - but since I'm in the process of writing my Master-Thesis that's not really an acceptable solution for the long run.

Has anybody else had that same Problem?

I haven't played around that much with office 2007 so far on windows 7, but I didn't experience any problem.

My first suggestion would be to make sure you have the latest service pack (should be sp2) for office 2007.

If you already have latest updates, including latest windows 7 updates, next step will depend on how you got your stuff. If you are 100% sure both office 2007 and windows 7 (example, checking the sha1 checksum of the iso you have) are fine, might be that you installed something office is not compatible with, so I'd start disabling stuff, or you might even want to test it in safe mode (I never remember launching office in safe mode, but should work) to see if you get same problems.

I am defragging my computer right now to see if that will help but If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Answer:Word linked to system crash

Search for and find a file called "" Its a hidden or system file so make sure you have enabled the viewing of those.

When you find any instances, delete them. Word will create a new clean one when it first runs.

This file often gets corrupted and can cause havoc. Reinstalling Office will not fix it, as it does not remove it. Its a template for the default settings.

When trying to open MS Word 2003 (Not concering rest of the Office pack) it crashes immediatly when loading screen appears. If you start Word by opening a document, an error message appears saying: "Can't find file <directory/filename.doc> . Control that you've typed the name correctly, and try again."
If trying to open Word by running winword.exe the program just crash without any error messages popping up.

I've noticed that the problem first started occuring after I installed the MS Office 2007 compability pack. I now have uninstalled the pack, but the problem persists.

I read in another thread regarding quite much the same problem that there could be a corrupted file. The is to be found in ..Documents and settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates . Well, the problem here is that for me, there's no "Templates" folder in this directory.

I've searched throughout my whole computer for (show hidden files) and used the advanced search mode with "search in systemfiles, hidden files etc." enabled, but still no match.

For now, Word only works in safe mode, or if I use the /a script.

I've tried using the repair function in safemode, but that didn't help me much. Have reinstalled the whole Office package as well, but that didn't ... Read more

I hope I am posting this in the right place. I just did the GWX thing and most things work as expected. They say old dogs like me can't learn new tricks. That's not true, we just don't want to. I tell you that because I am still using MS Office 2003. In general it works ok but if I open a word doc and then open a webpage and copy unformated text I can paste it in word. BUT if I copy text from a page that is using columns or frames and try to paste it word immediately crashes. Here is the event log for the failure.

Hi, I have an old laptop running XP and on it is installed Office 2007 Enterprise. It has been working great until a week ago.

Now suddenly Outlook and Word crash right at the beginning. Outlook sometimes opens the window, but as soon as I try to read email it crashes. If I'm lucky I can read one mail before it crashes.

Word doesn't even open a window.

I am not able to start the programs when using Outlook /safe and winword /a.

I really need to get to my mails and contactpersons in Outlook asap. Is there a way to do this, since I can't access the program? I really really hope someone can help me.

Hey all,
We are using Word 2007. Some computers can not open some .doc or .docx files (but can open other .doc or .docx files) while other machines can open the same exact files with no issue. It is very random. When opening these files, word hangs and crashes, then recovers, then hangs and crashes. This is happening with xp and win 7 machines.

For example. an xp user tried opening a .docx file that was on a share. Word would crash... copied the file to the local machine, same thing crash. Another user using Win 7 was able to open the file no prob, as well as another xp user. I tried opening the file with my win 7 machine, the file will not open, crashes....

Any help is appreciated.

I've had Word 2003 for years, no problems. Now when I create a new file, or open an old one, it stays stable as long as I don't try to touch any of the controls or the text, even a Search of the text causes a crash. And most peculiar crash it is: Instead of just failing and the program closing, a window pops up informing of a error - unamed - and that the program most close, with a small checked box mentionning that Word will save my file. What can I do?I've scanned for viruses, nothing. One thing I did prior to the problem was install Internet Explorer 7. Is there some instability issue with that program and Word? (IE7 is at the beta stage.)Thanks for the help, sorry I couldn't make this post shorter.

Hey all, need help big time..

For the longest time, wordpad and MS word (all versions -- 97, xp, and 2003) crash almost instantly after startup. If I start typing quickly, the crash holds off until I stop typing. I have no idea why it happens, the only message I get is the generic "encountered an error and must quit" etc..

I'm thinking perhaps there is a service or something that word relies on to run, that I have disabled.. but I looked through the list and there's only a couple things disabled and I don't think they're related anyway..

if someone has encountered this before and figured out how to fix it, that'd be awesome!

I CTL+ALT+DEL to attempt a restart and I get the BLUE SCREEN, followed by the message that the "system is dangerously low in resources" and Word closes... then it continues to close other applications thereafter, accompanied by the same "system is dangerously low in resources" message.

Hi all,

I am running Windows XP Media Center with SP2 on an HP Pavillion a1610n. It is configured with two user accounts. One for me, one for the kids.

Yesterday I was working on a Word Document, I saved it to My Documents (in my account) and stepped away from the computer. When I returned a few hours later my daughter had somehow caused the pc to go into recovery mode and windows was reset. she claims it was a "Non Destructive" recovery.

After running through the recovery we found 3 things:

1) Both User accounts had been deleted (makes sense since Windows as reset) and a default HP_Administrator account was created.

2) The Kids User Folder under c:\\documents and settings has dissapeared (mine was still there)

3) The two Word Documents that I had worked on that day had DISSAPEARED!! <--- HELP!

A few things to note...I don't know what my daughter was doing, she claims she was logged into the kids accoutn and opened an email and Poof, magically the PC went into receovery mode. I'm guessing Virus or Spyware.

I have rebuilt my user accoutn and moved all my files over into it so my desktop is back the way it was etc...I've also installed Windows "Everything" Search (great tool btw) and scanned the pc from top to bottom. There is no sign of my files. Even a Data Recovery attempt using Disk Doctor didnt find the file.

Answer:Word Document(s) Dissapeared after crash & recovery! Please Help!

if at all possible, data could be recovered by a specialist. not some type of software you would install unless you feel like spending a couple of grand. if you live in a metropolitan area you should be able to find one. they'll end up attaching your drive to a machine loaded with data recovery software which can pick up fragments in worst case and full file if you're in luck. issue is how many times has the drive written new data over where the old data was on the platter. too many writes and its gone forever.1 write or no write just a lost link and you could be in luck. by the way its not cheap so dont think of finding some bargain. last time i sent someone to a data recovery firm it cost them 300 bucks. so is your data worth it.? good luck

Hi there,

A colleague was working on a previously-created document today. He added some information, but did not save as he was working. Word crashed and when the document was recovered, the new work was lost.

I checked the Save settings and there was a tick against Save AutoRecover info every: and it was set to 10 minutes. He had been working on the document a lot longer than this - there were about 6 pages lost.

Allow fast saves was ticked, but not Always create backup copy. I am aware that only one of these choices can be ticked and have now changed this over.

There is a .asd file in the default location but this only opens the original document without the extra work.

Why has the Autorecover lost all the new information, if it was set to autosave every 10 minutes?

I have told him to not rely on this in future, and to always perform a manual save every so often. But he is not happy that he has lost this work. I think he messed about with it for a while before calling me, so he may have scuppered any chances of recovering anything, but is there any way to retrieve the lost text?

Answer:Word crash - some recent work lost

Someone else reported this same problem, Word 2007, within the last two days.
I wonder if there is a bug? Was it also Office 2007?

I'll see if I can find that post.

I have a problem with system restarts when I try to insert a sound files (wav or mid) from the clip art gallery into Word. Just clicking on the preview icon brings about the crash.

I don't seem to have the problem in other programs in the Office suite, just with Word. The sound files are intact, and preview perfectly in other programs, like Media Player and Winamp.

I have not had this occur in any other programs. A simple uninstall / reinstall of Word doesn't solve the problem.

I am using Office XP.

My specs are:

Intel grg845 mobo
Pentium 4 2ghz
512 mb ddr ram
Geforce 2 videocard
Live soundcard

My "The system has recovered from a serious error." message details are:

BCCode : 1000008e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : 8051D9CF BCP3 : B313DC34
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 1_0 Product : 768_1

It would seem to be a driver issue, but as I said the midi / wav files playback elsewhere perfectly.

Any ideas?

Hey Folks,

So I'm hoping that someone here can help me out. I rebuilt my machine last week with a fresh install of XP Pro (SP2).

Four days later, Outlook started crashing whenever I tried to send a message (with Word as my email editor). So I checked out Word, and it would crash when I opened it. I sent the report to MS and of course, they recommended that I get all of the Office 2003 updates, which I did. Still, both Word and Excel crash every time I try to do anything in them. Outlook is fine now that Word is no longer the email editor, and the other Office apps work just fine.

Any thoughts on how to fix this one? I have tried reinstalling Office, but of course, since it never completely removes...yeah.

Helo would be greatly appreciated.

I am running WinME on a Dell Inspiron 2500.
I have Word 2000 SR-1, and it's causing a complete crash at the splash screen point.
It was producing errors for a few days, and can now occasionally be coaxed as far as an error message before causing the system to give up the ghost.

The first message it produced was that it caused an error in msvcrt.dll.
It then moved onto user.exe. The last time I got a message it said,
'Ssdpsrv has caused an error in user.exe'.

I have tried removing word and reinstalling it from CD (both the repair option and complete uninstall, reboot and then reinstall).
I recently used an update CD from microsoft, which had various security patches, updated to IE 6 etc. (Although I'm pretty sure the dll error started before I did that). System restore to last week when word was working didn't help either.

I thought of updating word, but don't want to do a huge download (for my dial-up) if it's not going to help. (Besides which, the auto-detect on the Microsoft Office update page just tells me it doesn't support Office for Mac, which is odd. One would think it could detect its own OS).

Anyway, any ideas would be great - I'm at a complete loss.

Hi guys

Reallly new to this so hope I explain it OK.

My system is a dell dimension 4500 and is about 10 years old. Apart from being slow at times it works well for what I need (most of the time)

The problem I have is with a particular word document that has lots of shaded areas and tick boxes - Are these macros??

Anyway what happens is every time I start using this word crashes on me and I get the error report box that I can send the info to microsoft then it re-opens word with the file recovered.

I have downloaded all the latest updates and after downloading the compatibility I was able to put a cross in the check boxes but it still crashes when I scroll down the page and the process starts over again.

I have been searching online for days looking for solutions and no joy yet.

Anyone any ideas???

I ran the tsg thing and this is the info on my system

Referred from here: ~ OBHi everyone!I originally posted in the Vista forum but was recommended to post here. here's what I've said so far: When trying to save a file in word, as soon as the box opens up showing the navigation folder, word crashes with the "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working". In Firefox, when I click a picture and try to save, it does not crash when the folder navigation pops up -- but if I try to change the folder, thats when it will crash. Also, sometimes, when attaching files, like in gmail or this forum, it will crash as well.I feel I should note, I recently had the google redirect virus three times...I guess it never fully cleared. In my attempts to clear this I made quite a few changes and this last time I ran combofix. I should note, though, that this problem was prior to running combofix.I have been working on this for a week straight to no avail. I have tried so many things I'm not sure I can remember them all, but here are some. I used the Microsoft Fix-it Solution Center and ran "Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically" and "Fix Windows system performance problems on slow Windows computers". No fix.I ran windows startup recovery. I do not have the Vista discs as they never came w/ my computer and when the BBY Geeksquad "optimized" my computer they messed up the gateway built-in recovery. Windows 98SE, 750 mHz, 128M RAM, plenty of disk space

Word 2000 (not Office; this is the edition of Word that came with Works Suite 2000)

I've been having repeated crash/freezes in Word lately, the kind where, when I run Word and try to open a file, the hourglass appears and nothing happens. If I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete, I get an error message that I'm "dangerously low on resources" (but I'm not; Windows' Resource Meter is nice and green).

At that point things are frozen, and I have to turn off the computer.

Whatever is going on, after rebooting, deleting and replacing it with a copy of a backup (a backup I created before this started happening) clears the problem up, at least for one Word session, sometimes two or three. (Rebooting by itself doesn't solve the problem.)

My very limited take is that something is corrupting when I exit Word (although not every time; and sometimes the freeze will happen in the middle of a session when I've been working on a file and then try to open another one, although usually opening another file midsession will go perfectly smoothly).

Many of the files I've been working on since this has been happening have a particular template I created attached in addition to; I can't remember whether the problem started happening immediately after I created this template, but I don't think so. I think I may have been using it for at least a few days b... Read more

Hidely doodely. Did Google search for the above and got this site's sister site for Windows 8 concerning battery/power options - oh how those poor people do suffer. However, I'm missing that option from the menu that appears when I attach anything via USB - hard disk, USB stick, phone, iPhone under my Windows7 Operating System. It's not massively important, but the option WAS there at other times (95, 98, XP, I'm not sure (thank the lords, I missed Vista)), but is no longer. It was useful in that it stopped the system bothering me when I plugged something in, perhaps to only charge, and that's why I miss it - I don't like being bothered. If you know how to bring it back, and can be bothered to tell me how, I would be grateful.

Answer:"Do Nothing" missing from menus.

Hello Bob,

If you like, you can turn off AutoPlay to not get any notices when you plug them in. Otherwise, you could also leave AutoPlay turned on, and set specific items you want to "Take no action" instead.

Hope this helps,
