Preferred Solution: Scanner fails to adjust to adequate colour balace?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am using Windows XP. I have an Epson Perfection 1650 Scanner. Everything was working perfectly, but now when I scan a document with Grayscale setting, then print it, it prints out in BLUE.It isn't a printer problem as when I use the printer directly from the PC everything is OK.Any ideas please?

Answer:Scanner changes colour by itself!!

resetting your scanner from the menu. Mine did the same thing - Epson GT-7000 Photo (a bit old in computer terms)- all the grey scale photos came out with a strong blue tinge.Resetting the scanner to factory defaults seemed to cure it.Bodi

All images captured by my 8-year-old scanner have suddenly, for the first time, become far too deeply coloured (and wasting ink!).Is this a cue for a new scanner? It's as if its light's become dim. It's always produced a slight blue cast in some modes, but the black's much too heavy now (as is red), and it can't seem to 'see' yellow. It happens in both copying and scanning to an application (the only scanner facilities I use), and whatever its colour scanning settings (for destination/original or enhanced copy)I'm sure it's not my printer, or screen settings, and I can't have changed any colour balance settings for the scanner (there aren't any). Scan previews on screen look like the printouts; too dark. All non-scanned images (or those scanned before this recent problem) are correct in colour (apart from the above-mentioned blue cast) both on screen and printed. Scanner is Epson Perfection 1240U.Win 98SE, printer HP Deskjet 970Cxi.The Epson software writers were somehow unable to make this model copy to non-Epson printers, necessitating a 3rd-party patch; but I'd be surprised if it's anything corrupted in the patch - I think copying just wouldn't work at all.I wondered if the scanning software (Epson Smart Panel & Twain) had got corrupted, but I would have thought that would have more of an all-or-nothing result?Apart from the current problem I'm still pleased with the quality of the scanned images, and would rather fix it than scrap it. Any ideas?

I've had a Visioneer 9020 scanner for about 5 years. Until about a week ago it's worked without any problem. Now though, it's developed a strange fault whereby the scans (and previews) appear either yellow, green or any other colour of the rainbow (seems totally random). You can still see the content of the document or photo but with an incredibly strong colour cast. It's an intermittent fault, as sometimes the scanner works perfectly. I have uninstalled the scanner driver and Paperport software and re-installed according to instructions on the Visioneer site. This seemed to fix it temporarily, but now the problem has reappeared. If I reboot then this usually fixes it for a short while. Any help much appreciated.Win XP Home1.5 GB RAM2.66 GHz250GB HDSteve

When scanning colour photos on my Epson 1250, it seems to enhance any blue in the colours, so the final scan is not quite accurate. Is it possible to correct this, and if so, how can I change this in the settings? Also, if it can be changed, is it possible to easily revert to the default settings?Any advice greatly appreciated.

I have a Canon Pixma ip5000 printer and a Lide 80 scanner. Recently my printing has not been matching on screen colours and also scanning is giving a pinky hue with browns instead of blacks and greys. Is there anything I can dfo about this? Thanks!

Answer:Poor colour repro using Canon Printer & Scanner

it may be a callibration problem - monitors have to be setup to show correct colours or what looks ok does not print ok - or you could have a dirty printhead on the printer if this has only just happened. You could look for an updated driver for your printer.

Trying to scan to file colour negs with Epson Perfection 1650 Photo scanner. On Auto it recognises the negs and (eventually - very slowly)scans the strip of 4. As I only want one of the strip I've tried to use the manual mode, hoping to select the single neg from the preview. However, it insists the document is a colour photo and I can't see any way to persuade it otherwise. Is there a way or does it not support colour negs in manual mode?I'm using XP with SP1.

Answer:Epson Perfn1650 Photo scanner -colour neg problem

More problems. I'm laboriously using auto mode and now that is playing up. It recognise some neg strips as colour negatives but every third one it see as a colour positive. If I switch off, disconnect the power then remove and replace the TPU connector when switching back on it correctly sees the strip as a clour negative.Frustrating is the politest word that comes to mind.

I have completely un- and re-installed it without success.  However, I installed it on another XP Home PC just now and it worked properly.I am stumped and would welcome helpful ideas, please.

Since the scanner and all other computer components work, I'm guessing the problem is Windows setup or a problem with a Windows update...Had a hard drive failure when scanner was working properly, so picked up a new hard drive and have reinstalled everything properly except scanner. I have tried installation disk that came with the scanner as well as 3rd party drivers. I have another computer with binary identical drivers/Documan installed files running WinXP that works with the scanner. Cable and LPT1 port works with printer (hooked up in series and stand alone) and there is power to the scanner.Scanner is ArtiScan 9600Pro-36 with Tamarack Technologies (Documan) softwareWin2KSP4 with all MS updates installedECP Printer Port has - use any interrupt assigned to the port (although I have tried other selections)                           - legacy PnP detection enabled                           - no device conflicts listedThe failure of the scanner is a long delay in obtaining an image. I have a Trust 240TH scanner ( Item 12921-02) with 35mm slide scan adaptor - the reason I own the device. I've been struggling to install the downloaded driver software ( 12920_08.exe V. ) into WinXP/SR2 - and apparently failing at the Add New Hardware stage.

The OS seems unable to recognise the driver installation. Following the Add New Hardware wizard through, and indicating the C:/....~/Trust/....~/Driver folder, the dialog box shows a greyed-out 'OK' click-box. I am unable to get the OS to recognise a driver in there, or anywhere else.

Now, I've uninstalled, downloaded, installed, failed, uninstalled and cleaned-up, several times - just in case of a rogue download.

I've tried to install on a brand-new C2D WinXP/MCE machine that's not yet connected to the 'net, using a pen drive. Exactly the same result.

I'm unable to marry the software with the hardware, and I suspect a software problem with a) the driver download from the Trust website, or the OS.

How do I progress this?

This scanner works fine on WindowsXP, however.

I spoke Canon about this and they obviously get this complaint all the time and they say that their drivers (which they have failed to up date ) work "just fine" and that it is a problem with Windows 7 itself and that I need to speak to Microsoft (!)

Using the laptop on battery, when I press on F11-12, the brightness meter is shown on the upper left like usual, but it won't move up or down.  Yet I think it's strange that all other places I can adjust brightness are fine, and especially strange that everything is working totally fine on AC power.
I tried uninstalling the Generic PnP monitor and reinstalling, but to no results.  Also, both my power settings on battery and on power indicate no adaptive brightness.

Answer:XPS 9550 - Function keys cannot adjust brightness on battery, but can adjust everywhere else (action center, power settings)

The fact that it works on AC adapter means that this is strictly a software driver issue or operating system issue. Not a laptop hardware issue. Reinstall the chipset drivers (7) one at a time, restarting after each one. Then reinstall the Dell Command Power Manager, restart and retest.

Hi there gurus.
My pc doesn?t show certain colour objects in Publisher 2007 and some on-line sites. Overall, the screen colour is very good. I know the fault is localised, because when I switch to Print Preview in Publisher it looks fine and I can see all the object colours. (I only lose the colour with objects, not text)
Also, when I send a copy of a Publisher page to my partner who is on the same PC, it looks fine on her screen.
I?ve tried going to Install/uninstall programs and run the Repair, but to no avail. The guys in my computer shop are clueless without seeing it. Anyone who can help solve this for me is a gem.

What's cheaper: colour laser with genuine ink or colour inkjet with compatible inks?

I'm happy to invest in buying a colour laser: but I can't find any refills for lasers
At least they don't seem to be widely available

So, my choice is: colour laser + genuine inks or colour inkjet + compatible inks

From what I know, side by side: laser's are cheaper
But, how about when compared to genuine laser ink to compatible colour inkjet inks?

I should stress that for me needs, I am not overly concerned if using compatibles doesn't give me perfect results - just close as possible is fine for me

What's more important probably is speed of print at highest quality

ANY feedback would be great

Answer:What's cheaper: colour laser with genuine ink or colour inkjet with ink compatibles?

Finding Compatible Remanufactured Color Toner cartridges can be dicey. While they may be available, the problem may end up being the company tht does the remanufaturing. It is also dependant upon the model printer you get. I have noticed that the savings on my Black Canon X-25 toner cartridge is only about $12 lower than the cost of a Factory original cartridge. There are sites that I would save up to $30 per cartridge, but part of this is eaten up by the shipping charges. For my toner cartridge, I am about 1/2 mile from the store that does nothing but ink and toner refill services, and their garauntee thier cartridges 100%. In 3 years I have only had to return one cartridge and it was an HP #17 Color cartridge.

Now per page printing cost on a laser is much cheaper than on an inkjet. Though the printer cost itself is usually much higher for a Laser. Personally I use the laser much more than than my Inkjet, but I do use the inkjet for all color printing. But then 95% of my printing is monochrome text.

Marvell controllers are not up to it. Intel's are all the go. Just think of it as having a good ssd when you next update your board.

Just make sure that you have the latest firmware on the ssd. 1.3.3 is fairly stable for now.

Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe

Now, I'm thinking of upgrading my 7 year old video card to something new, like a 7600GT or 7900GS. The thing is, I don't really know if I should upgrade my power supply.
The 7600GT I'm looking at is passively cooled

I've got Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 2010 on my PC and installed it on my Brother's XP desktop PC, as I had a license for 3 computers to put it on.

Kaspersky Database stopped "updating" on my Brother's PC for some reason saying that Kaspersky's Database File was Corrupted....when I reinstalled Kasperky it was OK for a few wks and the same problem started again. Rather than turning it into a long saga and getting to the bottom of it, I just decided to install new security programs on his PC.

I've put on free Avast Antivirus 5.0.545 which also comes with spyware protection I think and gives "real time" protection; free Comodo Internet Security 4.1.150349 as a firewall; and he already had Malwarebytes on his PC.

He is also a light internet user and doesn't surf the web for the sake of it; and has got Web of Trust on his Firefox browser as an added precaution.

I know no programs offer 100% protection and Kasperky is a very well respected program (my one is free as a Barclays online customer), but is his PC security level adequate and comforting enough with the software I have installed?

Please feel free to make alternative suggestions.

Thank you!

Answer:Is This Security Adequate?

Looks ok to me, you could also use Superantispyware anti-Malware software (free) as well, the programs won't clash and what one misses the other may pick up.

I personally favour Antivir for antivirus protection as independent reviews consistently show it being able to detect the most nasties. Others will disagree though as Antivir does sometimes throw up some false alarms through detecting 'False Positives' and it also doesn't have e-mail protection.

However, a free version of Mailwasher (free version will only cover one e-mail account) can cover that angle.

Quite odd about your experience with Kaspersky, it's normally bullet-proof.

So far as computers are concerned, I'm a fairly simple soul. I have a router for an ADSL2+ connection, coupled with Zone Alarm firewall. I run AVG 7.5 free edition, SpyBot, Ad-Aware and have recently added Windows Defender. Plus I run CCleaner regularly. I have always imagined that this would offer pretty good security.

However, I was reading a blog by a supposed security "expert" recently, which suggested that, with increasingly sophisticated malware, this is no longer adequate. He was saying that we need to run PC Secure Test, then use Arovax Shield

He was also suggesting ewido, F-Secure, Trend, and a-squared, and for advanced users, HijackThis, and either IceSword or DarkSpy. I have to confess that although I've heard of trend, and have used Hijack This, the others are a mystery.

I guess my question is, how much security software is adequate to prevent most malware attacks, and are the packages referred to in the blog worth looking at? I know that this forum has some REAL security experts, and I'd appreciate some informed comments.

Many thanks

Hey everyone. I just bought a new PSU for a low-budget computer I'm building... it's an Antec SmartPower 400W. I was just wondering if it had enough WATTAGE for my needs. My parts are as shown: Athlon 64 2800+, 2x512 PC3200 DDR RAM, DFI LanParty nForce3 250gb mobo, GeForce 6800LE AGP, double layer DVD-RW, floppy (heh), case/some fans, mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitor. I might do some minor o/c'ing in the future. I was wondering if this PSU (400W) has enough for my specs. I don't know much about electrical current and wattage, hehe.

Nowadays, I see everyone going with 500W+ PSU's... I was wondering what exactly does that mean? I was told that most computers now don't need anything above 350W (or so) at super maximum, but everyone gets like so much wattage on their PSUs!. Even with overclocking and a million peripherals inside the computer, is this ultra necessary? or maybe I am wrong...Thanks!

Answer:Is this PSU's wattage adequate for my needs? Or is it too low?

Hi, I'm using the Aerolite theme with Aeroglass, and want a consistent colour for the borders. So I set accent colour from background 'off' and choose the colour. Fine so far.

Now that's ok if I log off and on.

But if I sleep or hibernate (not personally ) and then resume, the colour and setting are lost.

I noticed that on resuming, the border colour is present until the 'Please wait' screen appears, after which these settings are lost.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I recently looked through the recent infection help topics in the forum and made a note of which antivirus program the posters seemed to be using, presumably not having protected them from the malware they are asking for help with.
The results were:
11 running MSE
10 running AVG
 3  running Norton
 1  running McAfee
  1  running Avast
There could be many reasons for these numbers, such as coincidence, or they are in proportion to the number of people using the programs, but it is interesting to see 2 such well known and popular avs so far ahead in this sample.   I would be interested to know whether any regular helpers think this agrees with their own impressions?

Answer:Do MSE and AVG give adequate protection?

I personally would never install Avg or MSE.
Avg is totally useless and it can cause internet issues as well.
Microsoft security essentials is  a joke IMO  Why you ask well it is made by microsoft and they are in the business of selling operating system's not keeping them running in good order so that you are likely to not purchase more of there product.
That would be like oil companies investing money for scientist to  develop gas  that that burns  at half the rate of the current gas.....
Why would they wanna make less money.
I  personally use Avast.

I am building a PC for a friend, and he wants to keep it as low budget as possible while being a decent gaming computer, i was wondering would the PSU supplied with the Thermaltake Soprano (430W) would be substantial to run an 8800GT or GTS, it says here it can, but is that the combined or are they JUST talking about the card the computer is probably going to be running a Q6600 or E8400 2-4gigs of decent RAM, im going to go over the pros and cons about duo or quad with him, and sort that out, but is there a decent card that will run as well as the 8800 for around the same price and possibly use the same or less power?

Answer:430W PSU adequate to run an 8800

My Dell T3400 was available with the options of a 375W or a 500W power supply. I bought a refurb with the 375 PSU, but have been adding memory, drives, and boards since then. I assume that at some point I'll be overtaxing the PSU, but how can I tell when I've reached that point?

Answer:Is my power supply adequate?

Well the device that needs the most power is a graphic's card/ gpu so always read the minimum requirements you're a bit limited there with only a 375w psu
Most NVidia gtx models require a 4-600w psu minimum.

Helping a friend with a few upgrades on a Compaq Presario

It came with one 40g 5400rpm drive, and (only!) 128 Ram.

I'd like to add a 7200 rpm West Digital drive of around
80g, one 512 stick of RAM and a 92mm Antec Smart
case fan (the only fan it currently has is for the 2g AMD cpu).

They only have one small PCI fax modem dialup card.

It's got a 250 watt power supply - will that be enough?

(I didn't see ANY graphics card in it)

Answer:Adequate Power Supply??

It's hard to say really. It depends on what else you have hooked up to that system, and more importantly, the quality of that 250w psu you have in there.

But, you can take a look at this calculator to see how much power you need:

From what you have described above, 250w will probably be enough, assuming it is a quality PSU.

So I just recently put Vista back on my computer (had XP on it for a while. Didn't want it anymore.)I installed the following security software:Panda Cloud Antivirus FreeWindow Defender (Turned it on after uninstalling an old version of McAffe that came with my comp)Microsoft Security EssentialsNow I am wondering, is Windows Vista Firewall enough? I know it has inbound/outbound protection, but is it good? I am behind a router (The Motorola 3347) and need to know if the basic windows vista firewall is good?If not, what free ones are good? I know of zonealarm, and comodo, any others? On a side note, I disabled UAC (Annoying pos) and I need to know how to make Windows Vista ignore it being off. It shows the little red x shield thing in the notification area because of it. How do I make that disappear? Thanks!Cody

Answer:Is vista firewall adequate?

As it is, Vista's built-in firewall solution with a router is more thanadequate for most consumers' needs. But I use Comodo free firewall and it has a very good rating:

I am seeking adequate protection for my computer but with minimum impact on speed and responsiveness.
what about this : Defender + MBAM home premium + Bitdefender 60-second scan
I assume  that something heavier like Kaspersky will probably give me better protection on its own than all these three put together, but, as I mentioned, I am seeking minimum impact on speed and responsiveness.

Answer:Defender + what = adequate protection?

Hello and Welcome -
You will always get many versions of peoples personal set ups but ...
Defender + MBAM home premium + Bitdefender 60-second scan but basically The Premium MBAM should be enough with Defender - (not Bitdefender)

I am thinking of buying a Lumia 535 and have been looking at its specs in detail. I noticed that the only 3G bands that it supports are 1 (2100) and 8 (900). I know that the bands in use vary in different parts of the world. Although I normally live in the US, I want to buy a dual-SIM phone to use when traveling or living abroad, mostly in Europe or Asia. Obviously, I understand that I will not get 3G speeds if I were to use the Lumia 535 in North America, but I just wanted to see if maybe someone more familiar with the bands could tell me whether this phone can attain 3G speeds in most of the rest of the world with just those two bands.
Thank you

Answer:Are the 3G data bands on the 535 adequate?

Depends on where you visit and what carrier the SIM works on. Mobile country code - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Europe and Asia are too vague for a definitive answer. However, limiting yourself to 900/2100 is far from ideal when it comes to travel.
How about this? You live in the US. Get a T-MoUS Simple Choice plan. It includes free SMS texting and data when you are abroad in over 140 countries. My wife and I just used it for the entire month of October in Italy. Worked great. Put your T-Mo SIM in a better class of phone and get more world-worthy frequency matching..

I have read many entries regarding backing up in this forum and get more and more confused!
System images creation work fine with win 7.but making backups in addition gives an error message, which I have researched here without clarification.

My situation is that I have clickfree usb which reliably backs up all data files.
In addition, there is a second internal hard drive with lots of space.

If I make regular system images with windows and can restore data with clickfree, is that not all that is required?

Or is that too simple?

Answer:Would this backup method be adequate?

Yes it is all you need but it would be nice to get the data backup problem resolved.

if you can find a g access point with lower latency than your b then it might be worthwhile, but your internet connection is likely the limiting factor (unless your signal strength is really poor). what ping do you get to your router?

Quick background for me is that im 18, love computer and currently the tech support for my family(close and extended), neighbors, family friends, etc etc. While I dont have the strictest policies I do try to keep my home network along with anyones computer i work on non-infected.

Some of my scheduled task are: Nightly backups to a WHS box.
Nightly full system virus scans (Avast! home) on all desktops and the WHS. Laptops dont have scheduled taskes but my WHS warns me if i dont do either after a week.
Automatic updates on Avast and Windows/linux(gentoo based so not completely automatic)
And general precautions:My servers(except WHS) are on a different subnet as my desktops.
Servers are all linux except 1 and ssh is on non standard port with ssh only via keys
Servers also do mail and that is scanned for viruses
Router's UPnP is disabled, default password changed
Only needed ports are forwarded
Wifi clients can't communicate with desktops except for WHS.

I know this isnt completely Win7 related but i do have a few machines running it. i listen to a few security podcasts because they are interesting to me but I don't think im overly paranoid(no pseudo-random 265bit passwords).

Do you guys have any extra suggestions for me to do? Does windows7 introduce any "features" i should be on the lookout for?

Answer:Are my security measures adequate?

Your security measures are excellent except that fact that you are using just 1 anti virus. there are many things that antivirus misses during scans. hence you should also use alongwith avast.

I have two 900GB 15k RPM 2.5" drives in raid zero in my system. Using PERC 600 hardware controller. I use the system constantly for encoding and wondering if I need to switch to SSD for the hard drives. On my system when looking at the disk stats for the encoding process, there is always a response time of 52 or higher. Sometimes goes up to 100+. I've heard anything over 20 is bad. From a disk queue length perspective those drives (D: drive) sit around 0 - .20 during encoding. Thoughts? Is it working OK? Is there something I can do to boost performance? Note the CPU's (24 cores) are running about 53 percent utilization.

Hi, this is my first post here.

I bought a new computer recently which came with a free antivirus trial, however since the trial expired a freind said i need the following:

antivirus software, they said a good spyware program was needed and also firewall. I was told i could get these of the net for free.

My main concern is that will these free tools offer me adequate protection from all the bad stuff on the net? cna they really be as good as the ones you have to pay for?

They helped me to get a free version of avast antivirus so far.
I was recomeneded to look on this website, to check out other free tools that i should think about getting.

Ive read the two threads on general security and security help tools and im confused! There are so many different tools!

Im now not sure if avast antivirus is one of the better ones or not??

Also how many spyware tools should i use? The thread lists several tools, shoulds i install all of the ones listed? ( will they all work together?)

the computer has a firewall with windows i think.. should is this any good or should i replae withsomething else?
It all seems a bit confusing

If it is the case that the non free tools are much more effective i dont mind getting these but since there are so many free ones id like to check them out first before parting with more cash!

Could someone give me a bit of advice on what i need and what the best free programs are and how many i should use?

Hi folks,

I'm considering buying a game called Spore and I'm totally new to gaming. My pc is what it is - I have a basic understanding of how to read my own system specs. So before I go out and buy it I would like to know if my comp can handle it. Can you help me please? So here's my specs and the required specs...

Windows XP
Memory: 704MB RAM
Hard Drive: 55.4 GB free of 75.3
Processor: AMD Sempron 2600+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.8GhzNVIDIA GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU (64.0 MB, 1152 x 864 (32 bit) (60Hz) Integrated RAMDAC.
Built in chipset:

* 2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
* 512 MB RAM
* A 128 MB Video Card, with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
* At least 4 GB of hard drive space, with at least 1 GB additional space for creations.

I'm sure it's straight forwad piece of p (MB of video card?) but I'm just informed. Any light shed on anyones behalf would be appreciated.

Thanks guys.

You wouldnt be able to run the game.

I'm hoping to get some opinions on if I've got adequate internet security on my PC (win 7, 64 bit).
Previously I had Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 (along with cCleaner and Spybot etc), when the licence ran out, instead of upgrading online it was cheaper to buy a hard copy of 2013. Once arrived I realised I'd brought Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2013 and not Internet Security 2013, completely my error.
So I've decided to stick with just the Kaspersky Anti-Virus with some free programs (only the KAV is real time).
However I'm unsure if what I'm using now is adequate or if I've been spoiled by a security 'suite' and it's too much overkill?
Currently using: Kaspersky Anti Virus 2013. cCleaner. Windows Defender (Real time off). Spybot (No tea timer installed). Malwarebytes. Super Antispyware. Semper Driver Backup

I seriously need help with my PC. I've reinstalled Windows XP and Service Pack 2, and I can't chnge the Screen resolution or the colour quality. It sucks. And I also don't know my graphics card, or whether that will help at all.

I would swear at this point but I'm too young.

Okay, it has to do with your drivers. Go to ATI's website and find your driver.

Here's the link

Please download and install both the Control Center as well as the Display driver. Then restart your computer and try to change the resolution.

Hi Allhope someone more knowledgable can advise - I recently purchased a Lexmark x500n multifunction colour laser printer - I had a big black print job to do excel and word - 2000 pages - i was shocked to see that - ok the black starter cartridge of 2500 pages was nearly empty- fair enough - but all three colour cartridges (1500 page size) were nearly all empty too - I hadn't done any colour printing but when i contacted the manuf they advised that the printer uses colour also to print black!! - it's getting returned to them - but do do all colour lasers do this - obviously this quadruples the costs of printing and has put my costing out of the window!! - any advice would be great - it's a network colour printer, with copier and scanner that I need - a fax would be great but not essential.thanks in advanceTrifly

That would pee me off no end. How in God's name can it use colour to create black when there's a black cartridge in there? A cheapo mono laser seems to be your ideal tool. I know nothing about colour laser printers, but is there an option anywhere in the settings to print using only the black cartridge? Does the printer still work if you take out the colour cartridge while printing only black text documents?

I recently purchased a new Lenovo Y400 laptop and am planning to do some moderately intense gaming on it. I want to run games like Metro 2033, Call of duty World at War and possibly some other recent titles on it. If it has similar cooling to the Y500, which I imagine it does, it seems to be able to handle any game at this moment, though you want to make sure and not block any of the vents. I had tried to download a driver for my printer. After doing so, I received an error message and a warning box that came down and said call 1-844-546-2998. Norton remotely went through my computer and removed any virus that may have been there. They said that the blue screen has to be a Microsoft problem and call them about the driver issue. I have no clue where to go from here. If I hit Ctrl+Alt+delete, I can get to my homepage but, after about 30 seconds, it goes directly back to the blue screen.

The blue screen says:

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

A new banking code launched earlier this week by the British' Bankers Association (BBA) states that customers who 'use up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware software and a personal firewall' cannot be held liable for losses caused by online theft.

In the past the banking code - a voluntary arrangement upheld by most major UK banks - did not state this explicitly and while the losses of most online fraud victims were covered by their banks, the banks were not legally required to do so.

Last year customer rights group Which? called for changes to the rules regarding the compensation paid out by banks when their customers are victims of online fraud - those changes have now been implemented.

Which? also criticised banks for sending emails to customers and thus causing confusion over authenticity of communications. While the new banking code urges users to treat emails claiming to come from their bank with caution and to 'be wary of emails asking you for any personal security details', it does not go as far as to pledge that the banks themselves will not send such emails.

With phishing emails becoming increasingly stealthy these days (including some that actually warn about phishing), emails coming from the banks themselves - especially those that suggest the user clicks on a link to access their site - will only add to the confusion and give phishers a helping hand in fooling users into believing their emails are genuine.

My ISP is Verizon FIOS, and I have checked my speed and I am at 17/5 MBPS, enough to download any other content quickly like games, movies, Netflix HD...etc.
It seems to me that only youtube performs poorly, almost as if my ISP is throttling data only to youtube.  I know this is completely unethical and illegal, but I can't think of any other reason.  It's not like the old days where one just had a slow connection and you could watch the video buffer, rather it loads quickly and then just stops, no matter how long you wait.
I run google chrome (I have tried in IE and FF with no luck) in Windows 7 on a very high performing computer.  Any help would be much appreciated!

Answer:Youtube Loads Slowly Despite Adequate UL/DL Speeds

Usually, I pause the video and play it when half way full. It's a never ending story when it comes to buffering problem.

Sup ppl?
I got this problem with my page file. Weather it's managed by the system or given a custom size, it refuses to stay at a decent size. Every time I login, it's at about 200MB. I have 1GB RAM, and I set the page file to 1500 MB, but it keeps going back to a small size, and as a result, I am constantly getting the low memory warning from Windows, and my apps start to look and act weird, or crash.

I notice my Commit (whatever that is) under the Performance tab in the Task Manager is usually about 1500 with the small pagefile. I can always go to the Virtual Memory setting is System and set the custom size to something around 1500MB and stop the low memory warning, but I shouldn't have to do this every time I boot.

My harddrive is just 20GB 'cause i'm using a dumb laptop, but I usually try to keep at least 800MB free even after the pagefile is taking up 1500MB. How do I solve this annoying problem guys? Thanks.

Nuff Respeck

If you manage it manually and make the Initial and Maximum sizes the same you should not have this problem...

When I try and run the Network Setup Wizard, it tells me that I do not have adequate permission. It says I have to be authorised for internet connection sharing, internet connection firewall and network bridging before I am authorised.

I don't understand as it is my home computer running XP Home and I am on as an Administrator. Any suggestions?

Good evening, it has been a while. I got a custom built computer about a year ago so that I can play FSX and P3D reasonably well. Everything seemed to go ok, not great, just ok. This are my specs:
Intel i7 [email protected] - Nvidia EVGA GTX 970 4gb - Asus Z97 Maximus Hero VII - WD black series 1TB HD - Corsair RM series RM850 - Samsung 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 500gb SSD.
About a month ago I started to notice that my wifi connection would be lost, then come back on its own. It got worse about two weeks ago, so I tried running the troubleshooter, it failed saying an error prevented it from running. Odd I thought.
I tried running windows updater, it downloaded a number of files to update, but continuosly failed to install 3 of them, apparently related to Microsoft Net Framework.
This morning I decided to uninstall P3D, and install a clean updated version, and the setup failed, never happened before. In the forums it adviced to make sure Direct X9 is installed, tried doing that and it failed as well.
This is very stressful, and affects my immune system, which is not good for me. Can someone here please be kind enough to take some time to help me solev this mess, thanks very much.
This are some logs from what happened today.

Answer:Windows update fails, Direct X fails, troubleshooter fails

I am trying to install an update to a programme I already have in my NB200 and I can't because it's telling me the the screen resolution is not adequate for running this update.

Can anyone suggest a 'fix' for this please?

Answer:NB200 - screen resolution is not adequate for running update

Well, I have no idea why any update asks for the screen resolution because this should not affect any update procedures but it would be worth to change the resolution and then to run the update again.

I assume your are using the Win XP? make a right click on the desktop -> properties -> settings

There you can increase the screen resolution.

At the other hand it could be possible that your graphic card driver must be updated.
For that check the Toshiba European driver page.

I'm simply attempting to run update on my Windows 7 machine. Update will not run, downloading and running the SP1 update fails, downloading and running the Update Readiness Tool fails, trying to launch a troubleshooter fails. I ran sfc and have attached the log along with all the error codes screenshots. I have no idea how to proceed from here other than to drop this machine off at the nearest recycling center.

Answer:update fails, SP1 install fails, troubleshooter fails

Looks to me like you're having problems accessing the COMONENTS registry hive - although I would have thought that would also make a SFC scan fail.

I suspect I know what the problem is - let's see if a different tool can expose it...

So you try to run the 'rate my computer' and it fails showing this error message:

You are then advised to run a command prompt (old dos screen) as administrator and key in and run

This fails and gives the following error messages:

You start searching for these invalid characters after reading the various help threads out there such as this one: Windows Expierience Index could not be computed

You learn that not only does your computer have a bios but also something called a smbios, you may find it in registry thus:

You might confirm this using HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools utility as seen here:

Editing the registry value will not work! Updating the bios probably won't work. The answer to this most frustrating problem is as follows:

Answer:Hotmail login fails DNS error when using IE, MSN Messenger fails no service found?

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Go to, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

Hi All,

I have the above computer (or should I say my wife) & it has been nothing but a right pain since the first day we got it.
I have had it about 2 years & must have had to reformat the HD at least 6-8 times using the Product Recovery Disc as laptop wouldn't boot.
The laptop runs Vista.

Anyway problem I have now is that once again laptop fails to boot but for some reason Product Recovery disc also fails to work.....
What can I do...

I have read on various forums that it might work if I reformat the HD first using some s/w on a bootable CD but how/ what S/W do I use.....?
The laptop has a 160Gb SATA HD installed. How can I check this is all working.
I have no idea if current problem is S/W or hardware related..

Does Toshiba have a utility I can use...?

Many thanks for any help....

Answer:Satellite U300-13U fails to boot and Recovery disc fails to work too

What happened exactly?
Do you get some error messages using recover disk?

Please check if the HDD is OK! You can check this in BIOS.
If the HDD is listed in BIOS then the BIOS found the HDD and the HDD is not dead.

Usually you could boot the notebook using an Live disk? for example Bart PE
It?s a bootable live windows CD/DVD

This can helps to format the HDD and then to use the recovery disk!

I read that ahcix64s is an AMD driver. Download from AMD gives me 153MB of files.  I don't know how to isolate and transfer the needed file to the PC that will not run Windows 7.
Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.
My PC is an HP a6750f, with integrated Radeon HD 3200 graphics; Windows 7 (upgraded from Vista)

Answer:WIN 7 boot fails. Driver ahcix64s corrupt. Restore fails --registry.

I had the exact same problem today with my HP after installing the latest Microsoft Updates. Luckily I found an other version of the ahcix64s file on my hard-drive.
If you can somehow boot into command prompt or use the Windows Recovery Console - rename the current ahcix64s.sys file to something else and copy the other ahcix64s.sys in it's place.
Computer boots perfectly now.

So, earlier today, everything was fine. My computer was working normally nothing was acting up. While unplugging my laptop from the wall I dropped it, but nothing appeared to be wrong. A little while later I restarted my computer and it worked fine for about a minute and then everything froze in windows explorer, nothing would work, folders wont open task manager never appears start menu wont come up, nothing.
I booted into safe mode and everything works fine through there, so I looked around online and one suggestion was to update my BIOS so I tried to update from Dells Inspiron 1420 A08 to the newer A10 BIOS version, trying that in safe mode failed so I tried to boot normally and quickly do whatever it told me, when I tried it wouldnt restart (and still refuses too, I have to shut it down manually outside of safe mode) it said it couldnt update the BIOS version because it couldnt locate the image, but I downloaded it directly from Dells own website.
So then I tried to do a system restore, and I got the message:

The disk Vista (c:) has errors
Windows detected file system corruption on Vista (c:)
You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored.

So I clicked scan and fix, and nothing happens. (this is back in safe mode by the way) so I opened a command promp and typed sfc /scannow
and it scanned and found some errors but were unable to fix them. Details are located in the CBS.log
So I opened the log and I found the following:

Hi, the first rule if you ever drop a laptop (and it appears OK) is to take the battery out, boot from the mains if all is OK turn off add battery and reboot. Now you may have damaged the MB and or the RAM seating or HDD cable connection as well as the monitor connect cable.. etc ...etc. You can see where this is heading to the shop would be my advice.

About a week ago update keep saying an update failed due to lack of drive space so I fixed the issue. After that the update went through but keep failing and the pc would boot and remove the update. The pc was working normally otherwise. I have been extremely busy with work so ignored the issue hoping to resolve it this weekend however yesterday I came home to the pc endlessly rebooting. Just before the reboot the windows logo appears and then a message pops up saying restoring your previous version of windows. I have read many threads about the issues people are having but didn't find any that offered up a fix for mine. Spoke with MS Support and the best they could do with tell me to reinstall the OS.

Win10 64bit
Gigabyte mobo

System Restore fails
Startup repair fails
Go back to previous build fails
No option to get into safe mode that I can find

I can boot from Ubuntu CD and pc is working properly.

Can anyone offer any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Answer:Boot loop after update no safe mode option-repair fails- restore fails

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.
Please execute below command and reboot your computer to see issue resolves.

DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

Please replace partition letter C: with Windows installed partition letter. When computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assign any other drive letter usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command can be use to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

Hi White Knights, Good Guys and Gals,

My PC was attacked, likely through Internet Explorer today, since I haven't downloaded anything. The following are is the list of Malware that XP Security Center has notified:

and Trojan Remover has identified

and Mcafee
NTROSKRN... (rootkit trojan)

The program "Protection Systems" continues to pop up prompting me to buy along with random IExplorer bombs despite having removed it from programs. The system regularly freezes when I employ anti-malware programs.

I have attempted to use in normal and safe operating mode (Mcafee from safe command prompt)
=Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise (halts early in operation, Identifies NTROSKRN and 11 cookies)
=Stopzilla (Halts early in operation)
=Malwarebytes(fails to open even with changed name)
=Rooter Malware Finder (Eric_71) (operates results indeterminant)
=Trojan Remover (Runs. results indeterminant)

I am not in a good position to format the PC (in the wilderness).

Any advice what is preventing these malware programs from operating?

Thanks, and happy to repay the favor particularly if you like homebrew since PC wars arent my specialty!

I am looking at purchaseing a new scanner. I have several thousand slides and negatives that I am needing to scan and want to find the best equipment for this at a decent price. I've seen some people say the Plustek 7500i SE is a good dedicated scanner. Even the Plustek 7200i SE has a good rating. Is there any that are better or that you might recommend instead. I'm really struggling on what direction to go. A dedicated film scanner is suppose to be better quality but at a much higher price. I've looked up flatbed scanners for under $500 and the CanoScan 8800F seems to have the highest rating and good reviews.
If anyone could point me towards one they like or recommend I would greatly appricaite it.
Like I said I'm getting to the point where I'm getting confused on which direction I should go.
Thank you for your help.

Here is the list of the problems in order of which I noticed things going awry:

1. My Firefox browser will re-direct my google searches to a new Firefox window pop-up with "google-analytics" in its address bar, but would never finish loading the new popped-up window. Firefox would also re-direct and never finish loading my google searches by opening a new tab with a "" in its address bar.

2. Microsoft Office 2010 applications don't open, instead a "DW20.exe" and a "DWWin.exe" replicates itself an infinite number of times in my processes, maxing out my CPU.

3. My anti-virus applications (Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Security Essentials, avast!, malwarebytes) won't update, and therefore won't run or scan. Firefox also won't load various anti-virus sites, such as this message board.

4. Other applications crash directly upon opening them (VLC Media Player)

Solutions that I've tried:

1. Resetting my router. I'd read somewhere online that doing this would solve the problem. It did not.

2. Trying to restore from a restore point. I opened System Restore, but the restore points were all very recent and within the timeframe of infection.

3. Un-installing Microsoft Office 2010 and re-installing. System won't let me un-install.

Here are my scan reports:
