Poor file transfer Server 2012 Essentials

Question: Poor file transfer Server 2012 Essentials

Hi All,
Any help appreciated with this one!!
I have a Windows Server 2012 Essentials Server with Dell Perc 200 raid controller.
All generally works very well. But i have noticed if i copy files from one location to another location on the same hdd, the transfer rate starts reasonable and drops right down to 1-2mb / sec... or less... and sometimes goes to kb/sec and then sometimes drops to 0...
Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed?? Is it windows settings, the raid controller etc???
Thanks, Simon

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My school gives us server 2012 standard for free. I am wondering if it's possible to install it as 2012 essentials with the same features as essentials kind of like how win pro had every thing home had. Or are the features of server essentials not included in standard? (Features like full pc back up and the dashboard like whs 2011)

Answer:can you setup server 2012 standard as 2012 essentials?

Different media for the install, Server Standard and Datacenter use the same media. Essentials has it's own install disk and Foundation and Storage Server share the same media.

So, I am trying to setup Windows Server 2012 Essentials. I have it installed, and it boots to the dashboard, and starts the"Set Up Windows Server 2012 Essentials" dialog, it leads to "Error occurred during Installation" and says to reboot, or save logs, I have a copy of the logs files, if anyone would like them.

**NOTE - Tracert shows "double NAT", network before 192.168.1.1 is 192.168.254.254, I cannot change this from my current position but can in the future.

I have a domain setup, we'll call it 123.local, server name is WINSVR1. AD promotion was setup which then setup DNS. Router is setup to hand out 1.4 as the DNS server.

DNS queries in the browser seem fast and fine but NSLOOKUP queries have issues and I also cannot locate the local server when I'm trying to join PCs to the domain.

Here's a nslookup I tested from a client, unvisited before.

I can ping 123.local and nslookup 123.local along with winsvr1.123.local FROM THE SERVER but I cannot ping or nslookup either from a client. I can ping WINSVR1 (not FQDN) but that's probably from WINS or something.

Clients should be getting the DNS from the server, especially if you want clients to connect/use the server, especially for logons, policies, etc.
Im guessing the .254.254 is a uverse/att device?
Turn off the DHCP on the .254 device *or* add your current router into the DMZ type zone
Server should be sending out DHCP info
192.168.1.4 as DNS
192.168.254.254 as gateway (or is you can do the DMZ mode use 192.168.1.1)
255.255.255.0 as subnet

Has anyone else gotten this combo to work?

Whenever I try to install WSE2012 through UEFI/BIOS it fails. The computer reboots before I even get into the setup GUI. So far, I have only been able to boot into DOS.

I've removed all PCIE cards, unplugged hard drives, and updated the BIOS to the latest version.

I verified the chksum of the WSE2012 against Technet so i know my download is good.

I burned the ISO to DVD & Flash drive.

Any ideas?

I don't do these posts (Hey look at me, I'm awesome!!!), but this one needed to be made...
I am a graduate of both WHS v1 and 2011. I liked both, missed drive extender, and loathed my ATT Gateway as a result. That said, they always backed up on time, and the way I wanted, with no issues (until Drive Bender decided to bork everything and my Windows 8 laptop refused to play nice with WHS2011).

Well, my server needed an upgrade anyway, so I decided to gut it (mostly) and start over with the new Server Essentials 2012. (SE2012 from here on)

Old Specs: Core 2 Duo E4400, 2gb DDR2, Some s775 Asus board, and a 9800GT PE + a 2TB WD Green.

New Specs: AMD A6-3650, 4GB DDR3, an MSI A55m-P33, an Intel 120gb SSD for the OS, and I added two more WD Green 2TB drives (total 6tb).

I cannot emphasize it enough how easy the setup was. Drivers installed with no issues, straight from the mobo disk, and then updated through windows update. Unlike with my two WHS installs, I didn't have to trick them into thinking it wasn't a server OS etc. Getting DriveBender back in the form of storage pools was awesome, and again, set up with no issues whatsoever including built in duplication. The entire process, hardware switch included, took MAYBE 2 hours. That includes setting up a domain on the network with SE2012.

So, compared to my previous server OS experience, I also like the new dashboard. It's a bit easier to work with and makes a little more sense, though some of the dire... Read more

I've reached the end of my limited networking knowledge. Here's the deal:

- I have my home server running Windows Server Essentials 2012. Its primary function is backups of my various computers.
- My ISP is ATT Uverse, which provides a modem/router/gateway. It sucks teh ballz, so I set into bridge mode and set up a Netgear Nighthawk behind it. ALL devices are connected to the Nighthawk.
- I want to set up the server for remote access so that family can grab pictures and files remotely, and so I can do the same.
- I followed the instructions and the auto setup (I had to forward ports 80 and 443 manually, but that's done), and from the server's perspective, it says it is set up:

And now the problem:
When I try to access the sever from INSIDE the network, it loads the login page no problem. BUT, when I do so from the outside, the server sends no data, nothing loads.
Am I missing a setting on the bridged gateway?

I'm trying to help a friend to get their Windows Server 2012 Essentials setup up in their small business.

Server is operational, but I'm having issues connecting PCs to it...

I'm able to get to the server page by going to http://(servername)\connect
I can download the connector software, when I run it it finds the server it ask for user name and password.

After entering info it tries to connect for 20-60 seconds and fails with:

Cannot coonect this computer to the network
The Server is not available. Try connecting this computer again, or for more information, see troubleshooting connecting computers to the server.

any idea what could be causing?

could this be caused by network issues? They are using ATT DSL for internet access, with a ATT model, that is referred to as "gateway.pace.com"

They also have a zyxel smart switch, it seems that both ATT DSL and Zyxel switch are acting as DHCP, and both might be issuing IP addresses.

Another thing I noticed that they are using IP phones for all office phones.
All PCs are connected to the network with an IP phone as a device in the middle, that seems be slowing down the phones from normal gigabit to 10/100 only.

Any help would be grateful.

I want to choose an OS for a media server, has to be Windows. I have valid keys. The server hw is pretty old, its an old SuperMicro with AMD Opteron, 6GB DDR2 etc.

Which of these is going to have the lowest resource usage? I don't need to use any pc backup features, just run it as a server with the usual tasks like Plex/Emby, downloading etc.

what do you mean by "added my computer into the server" as it's not clear what you did.
and clarify "there is no user found on the permission for drop box"
it should list local accounts and possibly the SID of a deleted domain user (if you mean you added your computer to the domain that Server 2012 Essentials creates)

Ok, so after a long time working fine, my desktops stopped backing up.

So, as recommended by the TN Article for Client Backup issues, I started the Database Repair Utility in the Dashboard.

It starts, and after a while it fails and says it fails due to an unknown problem. I click the link it provides to find help, and it dumps me in the generic Server2012E page. I've not been able to find any help on this issue.

Any idea's ?

I also ran a SFT /Scannow on the server. The last time I had a client backup issue this fixed it.

Exact Error Wording:

Backup repair did not complete.
An unknown error prevented the backup repair process from starting. Make sure that all services are running then try again.

The services I know to check are indeed running.

I don't know if this is buried here on HOCP or not, but here it is just in case.

There is an article on SuperSite that explains how to add a computer to a Server 2012 Essentials machine (i.e. install the connector software) without it taking over the workstation and adding it to the domain.

Article...

Hopefully MS won't put some sort of bullshit block in for this in the final RTM.

We have an important LOB application (QuickBooks 2018) that requires that requires Internet Explorer 11 for QB to operate correctly.  Unfortunately our server runs Windows Server 2012 Essentials as an operating system (not R2).  From reviewing
various Microsoft documents, I realize that IE 11 is not supported on Server 2012.  However, we need to be able to run QuickBooks, which requires that version of IE.  Upgrading the server OS to 2012 R2 would take hours, because there is no in-place
upgrade option.  We would have to reinstall and configure the OS again from scratch.
Is there anything we can do to resolve this problem?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

I've been using MS SE Beta since it came out on W7 x64 7100 Ultimate RC and few days ago I installed W7 7600 x64 Pro RTM and also updated MS SE to 1.0.1500.0 and I'm 100% sure that MS SE Essentials slows down my PC, especially while copying/transferring files/folders between partitions/over the network (PC1 to PC2 etc).

I tested transferring many time with MS ES on/off and I can say for sure MS slows down file transfer significantly, e.g.

8GB between PC1 and PC2 and also 8GB from partition A to partition B

With MS ES ON = 8 mins
With MS ES OFF = 4/5 mins
With MS SE OFF and AntiVir ON = 4/5 mins

I really like the idea of having MS providing Firewall/AntiVirus/AntiMalware/built in CD/DVD burner program etc cause I strongly believe it would be less potential conflicts to the OS.

I no longer need Nero and 3rd party Firewall after testing out Windows 7 built in Firewall and CD/DVD burner program, MS did an excellent job here.

I know MS SE is still very new, and I would rather not use the good old AntiVir, however the slowdown of transferring files bother me, cause I do a lot of transferring between my partitions/PCs (12 TB).

Any suggestions? or should I disabled the "Monitor file and program activity on your computer" under Settings - Real Time Protection?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:MS Security Essentials slows down file transfer/PC?

Not so much a suggestion, but it may be that MS has debug code built into the beta. I noticed a big increase in the speed of Win7 when I went from RC to RTM. I think they take out a lot of stuff to help them diagnose and probably report back to them. Maybe it will be the same with MSE.

Ok, i've been pretty patient with my first time around with Vista since Oct of last year after I built my new SFF gaming system. Its been well behaved and hardly given me issues, except what is fucking up with file transfers on this OS? I have seen better transfer rates from HDD to a farking floppy disc in comparison to my USB2.0 sticks!! I kid you not, it takes a good damn 5 minutes just to move 1 gig across either direction!

And then theirs the network file transfers, holy God in heaven it sucks!! I have a full Cat 6E wiring to a 3COM switch downstairs to m HTPC attached to my D-Link 4300 and it always ran awesome on my older Windows XP machine. But recently, after trying to move 300-700meg video files from my BitTorrent machine to my HTPC, my transfers rates crawl at 120-200 kbytes a sec???!!!

I"ve done as much googling as I can on this issue including turning off a few options in Windows programs area, but nothing has helped! Can anyone else shed light on this issue before I decided to start burning DVDs and moving my files that way, cause its sure a helluva faster!!

Iv'e checked my ethernet wiring which around 40 feet going from upstairs to downstairs. I reterminated the ends nice and tight and neat, so I know its not the cable. My HTPC is running MCE 2005 and I can transfers files freaking blinding fast between that and my girlfriends XP dell laptop, even at just 100mbps, so its narrowed down to my Vista machine.

I'm not running any software fire... Read more

More or less could use a few thoughts, I have temporarily fixed my issue, but ideas would be nice.

I am running two Server 2012 R2 systems, one is my AD/DC/DNS, and another is running WSUS and acting as a basic file-server.

I recently upgraded the SAS controller on my ESXi host (which is where the two servers are located) and lost my disks, just got done restoring most things then got to a network share that I randomly had spots with ZERO access to the share remotely, so restoring my files proved to be annoying for this share.

I then started to notice I had trust issues with my domain so I had to rejoin my networked machines to the domain, this included having the fileserver rejoin the domain before it's domain logon expired. All was perfectly fine till today when I started running into permissions issues.

For example; \\servername\Media1, I could access it locally on the server, and read/write just fine, but remotely, while I could access the share, I couldn't access something like \\servername\Media1\directory1\ask\, but COULD access \\servername\Media1\directory1\huh\

To further complicate things, yesterday while I was working in this shared folder, I had zero issues accessing \\servername\Media1\directory1\ask, but do now.

To further things, the security permissions are inherited by the parent directory, I checked, and double checked, both security, and sharing permissions was all set properly at the root directory, and all lower directories.

Now, on... Read more

I'm seeing an odd behavior during my Windows 10 Pro testing. When copying files to/from a Server 2012 share, the transfer is taking twice as long as it should.
Watching traffic, I'm seeing this odd behavior:
1) If I'm sending a file to the server (let's say 300MB), it copies the file up (Send traffic shows 90Mbps on a 100Mbps network), but when the file is done, the bar goes to 0Mbps. Watching traffic shows 90Mbps of Receive traffic - as if it's copying the file back down from the server to the client. After an identical amount of time as the send - the file completes.
2) If I'm receiving a file from the server, the same thing happens in reverse.
I can't explain why everything is sending, and then receiving the same size during the transfer. I've tested on a Surface Pro 3 (using the Surface dock), and a Dell Optiplex desktop. Same behavior on both.
Could it be an issue with Windows 10, or Server 2012? I know Windows 10 includes a new SMB protocol, but I'd imagine it downgrades the handshake when talking to Server 2012.
Anyone tested this and seen this behavior?

Answer:File Copy Speed - Server 2012

Nevermind - after further testing it turns out it was the Surface Pro 3 dock. Apparently they have a problem with Windows 10. I tried three docks and they all did the same thing. I tried the Surface Pro USB Ethernet adapter, and everything worked perfectly.
The OptiPlex turned out to be a bad NIC driver. Once I replaced the driver, the problem went away.

i dont know if anyone has had the same issue but when transfering from my windows 8 pc to my whs the file transfers seem to stop at 99% and then fail.

any help would be great

Answer:windows 8 to server file transfer

Have you tried initializing the transfer from the "whs" instead of from Windows 8 to the WHS? Try that, go into the WHS and try to move it from Windows 8 to there, from within the WHS.

The only thing I can think of, is that at the very end of that transfer, it may be pulling up a Permission dialogue on the WHS which you can't see on Windows 8. Because it is possibly moving the transferred file from a Temp folder on the WHS to the folder you chose as the destination.

You may also try checking the permissions of that file, and give Administrators full permission to handle it.

I'm wondering about the quickest way of transferring a large amount of data from a remote server to a local one, over a high-bandwidth connection, and ideally with some encryption. Both machines are Linux systems.

My first shot would be to just use scp, which of course works, but it seems every scp transfer is capped to around 800 kB/s. This is nowhere near the bandwidth limit, as I can just open up additional terminals and start new separate scp transfers, each one of which will then run at around 800 kB/s. On a previous occasion I tried pushing this, and had around 80 terminals open at the same time for a total transfer rate of around 400 MB/s. They slowed a little per process, but it still didn't seem saturated.

Anyway, while that may work, it's a bit of a nuisance to manage. I'd like a way to either get rid of the bottleneck in each scp thread, or an automated handling of multiple scp threads for arbitrary transfers. The latter meaning that I don't want to have to write a new script every time I do this...

Naturally, it doesn't have to be scp. I've looked into rsync, but running it over ssh I get the same speeds, and that of course sort of indicates it's not an scp issue but more likely something with the encryption of ssh. In this context I found this:

http://www.psc.edu/networking/projects/hpn-ssh/

Answer:Fastest inter-server file transfer

I'm not much on Linux, but can you create a shared drive on both pc to put this large files on, and then create a vpn, and create a user that has read/write access rights to those shared folder. It should then work like a shared folder on a LAN, where the bottle neck in your speed wiill be the upload and download speeds your ISP gives you.

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to fix a slight problem I have, but I'm afraid I'm out of ideas and Google isn't helping much.

I have a Windows 2003 server machine with a GB ethernet adapter in it, and I use the server to hold files and act as a gateway. However, when I try to copy (large) files to the server, network utilization is about 50% for 3-4 seconds, then bottoms out to .5%-5% and keeps fluctuating in that range until it finishes or I stop it. I am able to copy files from the server at an acceptable speed without any trouble, though (30-50% utilization).

I know the problem can't be my own machine because I'm able to transfer large files to and from other Windows XP Pro machines without any problem. Anyone have an idea of what might be causing this and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Tom

P.S. I tried to search for something related to this, but I couldn't find anything.

::Edit:: I should mention the server is also a domain controller.

Hi,

I have a requirement for an Https file transfer mechanism and am currently looking for software to do this function. I want the software to be ideally meet the following requirements:

- free/open source
- run as a service on either windows or linux (preferrably the latter)
- allow people to send files to a other people
- must be secure and use https through a standard web browser
- be very simple for clients to use (somebody should be able to pretty much go to the web page, select the recipient, choose a file and click upload)

We have an in house written web application that does this, and although it seems quite nice it does have it's problems, so I'm looking for something standard on the internet to replace it.

The current mechanism accepts the file, and then emails the recipient with the https link to download it.

Surely somebody must have had this requirement before for simple quick document exchanges from outside the company to inside or vice versa that don't use fully blown sftp servers or the like which requires both sides IT departments getting involved to set up both ends.

Does anyone have any recommendations for server softare on either windows or linux which can do this?

I  have a bunch of personal files on our company file server (egnyte cloud), and I want to transfer them to google drive.

I can do it by using an FTP client (FileZilla) to transfer onto my local HD, then up do Google Drive. Since I will just delete them from there, it would be nice/faster if I could just directly copy the files from Egnyte to Drive.

Anyone know how to do this?

Ok, so here is a little info about the network setup.
Linksys E3200 Router
3 - Windows 7 Machines (Enterprise & Ultimate) , Tried wire and wireless
1 - Windows 8 64-bit machine
2 New Macbooks (Air and Pro)
1 Mac Mini server (2011 model) - 3TB external HD formatted in OS Journal (default mac) with samba sharing enabled

So here is the issue...
The macbook's we have connect and transfer large amounts of files just fine to the mac mini. No issues at all, even on wireless. The issue is when trying to transfer files from the Windows machines to the mac mini. You select just one 150mb file to copy over, and it might fail at 30mb or 120mb transferring giving an error like file or path is not available. However you can hit retry a few times and it might continue or restart, sometimes you have to cancel and copy the file over again. It acts like it loses the path, but you can instantly navigate to the server again instantly like there was never an issue. If you select a bunch files to transfer, lets just say like 2000 files, and its a total of 4gb. You will have to hope the retry works when the error happens or click skip and redo the file after. Nothing stands out that is causing this, but it is either an issue with the Mac & Samba transfer, router setting, or a Windows setting / registry issue causing it.

I tried to search google, but most things that come up are how to setup sharing from mac to windows. Can't exactly find anyone else talking about this, except I ... Read more

I seem to keep getting this error whenever I try to uploading something thats too large.

It transfers fine for a few mins, then it stalls and eventually I get this error message.

Small files are fine since they don't take long to transfer, it just seems that I can't have a file transferring for too long.

I can actually get the damn file through but since I keep getting that error, I need to keep manually clicking on the transfer button. So it takes about 20 tries before I can finish a 30MB file. And I have a lot of files to transfer so thats very troublesome.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? I tried turning off the firewall and opening ports on my router but it still doesn't work. Using Cute FTP.

Thanks.

Hi guys,

Here is the deal! I have Windows Home Server on one computer and Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on other. If I try to transfer file from WHS to WIN7, to transfer wont start. It hangs on "calculating". Sometimes is starts, but crashes pretty fast.

If I upload from WIN7 to WHS, it works. If I download from Ubuntu (samba) to WIN7 it works. Everything works, BUT transfer from WHS to WIN7. I also cant stream video or music, it just wont work.

My WIN7 has motherboard Asus P5K with Atheros L1 gigabit NIC. Router is D-link DWL-4300 with newest firmware.

Any good ideas what to try. Problem definately seems to be between WHS and WIN7. since everything else seems to work. I'm really open for good ideas here guys

Hi
I am working with windows 8 and I have installed SQL server 2007 and visual studio 2010. Now I want to upgrade these setups to SQL server 2012 and visual studio 2012. what is the advantages of what i want to do and how can i do it easily without corrupting the operating system? Please help.

Answer:Installation of sql server 2012 and visual studio 2012

SQL Server has an upgrade option that is pretty painless. Just run the setup file from your 2012 installation media and click the upgrade option. It will ask you what instance to upgrade, run some checks, and then upgrade it for you.

Visual Studio is a little different. If you install 2012 without uninstalling 2010 first, you will simply just have both versions to choose from. You can completely uninstall 2010 before installing 2012 by finding your 2010 installation file and adding the uninstall and force switches when running it(ex. "C:\vs_ultimate.exe /uninstall /force").

If you keep 2010, 2012 will ask you if you wish to import your settings and whatnot from 2010. If you uninstall 2010, 2012 will just have it all when you open it for the first time.

Hey guys sorry in advance for the sort of noobie questions, never built a server before. My new file server will be running XP, however every other computer accessing it will be using Vista, I initially just wanted to set up for sharing files over the network through Network in Vista (or my Network places in XP), however after reading about a lot of issues people were having file transfers back and forth between the two operating systems I started to want to look elsewhere. I was thinking my alternatives would be some sort of VPN for file transfer, or some form of remote control software using its file transfer features. However what I use now (Teamviewer 3) requires the user ID and pass to be entered everytime which could be done but that's tedious considering as of now I don't have a monitor for the file server. Is there some other remote control utility to handle what I need? Should I go for maybe a FTP client instead? I just wanted your guy's input thanks in advance.

Answer:Building new file server, best ways to transfer files over network

You are waaay over complicating this. If this is for your home do the following:

On your file server install your OS of choice, perferably server-class (Win2k3, Win 2k8, *NIX, etc) Create the shares for you files/folders. Then browse to them from the vista machines using: \\<servername>\share or just create a mapped drive if you like. There is absolutely no need for anything more than that. No VPN, FTP, RDP, etc... at all.

If this is for a business you'll need to build something probably a bit more robust.

Recently a few users at my work were upgraded to Intel Macs. Everything seems to be working fine except transferring larger files (larger then 100mb). They are able to send smaller file fine and even large files to a different server that is running Windows 2003.

Is there a solution to this problem other then upgrading to 2003?

There where a few files that did make it all the way through but I was unable to get a second file to transfer. I am getting the error -43, which means the either the file or transfer location are missing.

Wow- what a mess this is. You know, the Win8 love/hate thing- desktop OS vs. Tablet... I get it. Trying to make things easier for Joe Average user. No Problem. But this stupified, dumbed-down interface on Essentials is a joke. They have emasculated Small Business Server. I've been deploying SBS since the old 4.5 days. It evolved into what a lot of us feel was the best- 2011. Great product, served a HUGE need, and by 2011 they really fixed most everything that was ever wrong with it.

So of course, MS has to f**k it up. First, by removing Exchange, then by applying this moronic Win8 interface... to a server! It's truly pathetic. It has been sad to watch MS abandon the small business community- both its customers and the people like us who support it. This one is the worst yet.

Answer:2012 Essentials rant

They arn't abandoning them per say, just making the poor decision of trying to force everyone to hosted exchange and office 365.

SBS2011 was a good product and had its place in deployments, I tried to stay away from it though, I honestly don't like small companies having Exchange servers in their office.

Microsoft has released Windows Essentials 2012 which includes new versions of Movie Maker and Photo Gallery for Windows 7 and Windows 8. Details about the new features in Movie Maker and Photo Gallery are available in the Windows Experience Blog, Introducing the New Windows Photo Gallery and Movie Maker.
Windows Essentials 2012 includes the new SkyDrive for Windows app as well as Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Family Safety, Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Messenger, Outlook Connector Pack and Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker. Windows Live Mesh and SkyDrive
If you install Windows Essentials 2012, it is important to note that if you have Windows Live Mesh installed, it will automatically be removed if you install the new Movie Maker or Photo Gallery. In its place Microsoft SkyDrive will be installed. Microsoft has specified that if the new Movie Maker and/or Photo Gallery in Windows Essentials 2012 are installed, you can not have Windows Live Mesh on the same PC.
In order to sync folders from the cloud to all of your PCs, it will then be necessary to install SkyDrive on all of your PCs or Macs. (Windows Live Mesh continues to be available from the Download Center: Windows Live Essentials.)

Here's a new one for ya.

I have 2 accounts: admin & limited. I use the limited.

Upgraded from live essentials 2011 to essentials 2012. had mesh, skydrive, photo gallery/movie maker, and outlook hotmail connector.

The upgrade updated skydrive, outlook connector, and photogallery/movie maker, and removed mesh, as to be expected.

logged into limited account to access photo gallery and got this:

Went back to admin account and repaired it. It mentioned that a file corruption was preventing the repair. So I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, restarted, logged into admin, and accessed photo gallery. Worked fine.

Went into limited account again with the same error. It does eventually start up, but you have to click OK 5 times to make the error disappear.

If someone knows a fix, let me know. I'll keep trying to work it through, and I'll post what I find.

This is the 'corrupt profile error' when I try to repair:

Answer:Essentials 2012 error

Hi,

I try installing Windows Essentials and it wont install! This came up for 1 hour

I got bored and cancelled the process and now the windows all user install service agent wont work, I cant log onto and internet connection won't come to my apps I have install.

Do I have to refresh my computer or anything else?

Thanks

Al

Answer:Help with WIndows Essentials 2012

A refresh would be your easiest option. Remember that a refresh will remove any installed apps that were not pre-installed on the system and your data files will land in C:\Windows.old. Since that's the case, I like to suggest that afterwards, you install the apps you life, then create a new image using the "recimg" command line tool. That way your "refresh" will refresh with your apps installed and data intact.

Hello, all!

I am preparing to get a Windows Server set up in the near future here at a mission school I just started working at.

Here's what I am planning on running:
Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, under which I will run 3x virtual machines (Server 2012 Standard, pfSense, and Untangle).

Since I am needing to get this implemented as soon as possible, I am trying to decide what to do, considering Windows Server 2012 R2's release is just around the corner.

I'm wondering... Is 2012 R2 going to be a completely different OS, in that you need to purchase a separate license key to run it if you already have 2012? Or will it be more like a service pack?

Also, can the preview version be upgraded to release once it is released?

The reason I am asking is that I am needing to get this set up as soon as possible, and need to know how to proceed. Should I use Hyper-V preview and Standard preview (if there is one... Only seen datacenter so far) then upgrade to release and purchase licenses, or is there something else that would be preferable?

Thanks!

Answer:Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2 Questions

2008 R2 and 2012 R2 are new operating systems that require you to purchase them. I believe 2012R2 has gone RTM recently, which means in a few months you should be able to get it.

There are a lot of VM improvements in 2012, and even more in 2012R2. If you're just running a basic setup it's not needed to hold out for, unless you're not under any time constraints, then why not. Here is a list of the major R2 features.

I'm not sure how well pfSense and Untange will run in a Hyper-V VM. The Gen 2 VM and improved Linux support of R2 may be needed for better operation.

I migrated an office from 2003 to 2012 Essentials.

I admin'd the box fine setting it up at home with RDS and installed REALVNC on it. Everything was groovy.

Took it to the office and migrated all the workstations to this new domain controller, migrated profiles, etc, moved files, remapped shares, did scripts, etc. Everything went very smooth.

I get home and cannot get to the box thru the VPN as I always did with the 2003 server. Can't ping it, get to it with RDS, VNC, nothing. Can't get to any of the workstations either. I'm thinkin' ohhh crap, I'm in trouble Monday morning, this office is down hard and dead!

Nope, nothing, no calls. I send an email to ask the Doctor if they turned everything off and he said no, everything is working fine.

I am not interested particularly in the web admin access, that I most likely disabled because I can't reach it either. But it looks interesting and I might re-enable it.

But mainly, how do I get RDS and VNC access back? This is a remote site and I'd like to know before I drive 100 miles round trip.

Answer:Windows 2012 Essentials Question

Windows firewall?
Possibly it (properly) detected the new network when taken to the office, but set itself to Public network instead of Work or Home?

We had that happen once here, except it was when someone did RDP in. The Network Detection dialog popped up, but he ignored the box; Windows presumably then selected Public network and blocked pretty much all inbound connectivity.
Though that did block literally all inbound connections.

Ok so I have been reading up here on rants and different things on the storage spaces piece...

I went from WHS v1 to WHS2011 now but am not running any backups or duplication or anything....

I am now running WHS2012E (if you will)...on a machine to make sure it all looks good. But I only have 1 drive in it at the moment..

so in my ESX 5.5i environment I installed it then added 2 drives...

just for confirmation....

what is the mimimum size drive to use for the OS???
I have a 1tb in there and was going to get 2 x 3tb drives.. and only use them.
but V1 would allow you to duplicate data that way but the new WHS2012E does not.
seems drive pool must be 2 seperate drives in addition to the OS drive so it makes no sense why wyou would want a 3tb OS drive...
(verified this by more googling... hah)
am I missing something here?

I am thinking 250gb or 320gb drive for OS (have them already)
3 x 1tb drive in a pool then mirrored x1 (as I have them too) - if that is what it is called...

I dont need 2 copies of this and 3 copies of that.. raid 5 for this and all that...

I have pics, movies, data files that are shared out to computers in the house... I just want to make sure if a drive goes I can get all my data back....

recommendations?

this machine will be running
movie share
music share
data share

CCTV - 8 cameras

Dear All,
I have a problem where i am having 2 application server clustered and both using a common file folder (residing on one app server and access by other through mapping network drive). This common shared folder is storing some files used in application. Now my problem is that because of sharing folder this way, my application starts running slowly and performance is hampered. It application actually stop running as file is not getting opened. If i remove the clustering and just work with one app server (ofcourse file folder residing on the same server) it works fine. Can somebody tell me what can be the problem if i access the files through mapped network drive. I am using windows server 2K with 2 GB RAM.

Appreciate the help on this.

Each account has its own set of folders and each account can be given a color, the ribbon menus on top are great and offer multiple options for your emails.

Reader can be completely customized with many different views, custom column headers, etc.

Hi all,
hope some good sould could help me here.

I want to install back live mail 2012 but at the end of the installation it keeps on reporting the following:

It looks like another program is preventing the installer from working.
Error: 0x80070643
Source: crt90-i386

instead of saying: done.

I've looked pretty everywhere but I couldn't find a solution.
I've tried a clean start, with just MS services, tried to uninstall feature NET framework and reinstall them, tried to stop and restart the firewall, tried to clean all the cache, temp files.
I also tried to install the messenger or the Photo gallery and Movie maker alone, without mail.
Nothing, it keeps on reporting that darn error
Anybody have an idea on what could be wrong?

Alright, I have been running into a lot of problems lately with installing Windows Essentials 2012. I have gotten 2 different error codes which I have looked into forums about at and done everything they said to do. I have successfully installed it but then when I attempted to launch Movie Maker (which is all I need) it told me that I was missing something (shouldn't the installation put EVERYTHING you need for the program to run on your computer?!). So I got that file and put it in the appropriate folder and then again attempted to launch Windows Live Movie Maker and I got another message saying I was missing a DIFFERENT file. I have run 2 different virus scans and cleans on my computer (because some forum told me to run a scan). Now what is happening is that I am running the installer and with in matter of seconds it says that Windows Essentials has successfully installed. However, when I go and try and use one of the WLE programs IT... IS... NOT... ON... MY.... COMPUTER! I am starting to get pissed off. I have spent hours on end attempting to fix this problem and no forum has helped me.

Hopefully now I can get some real help on what to do.

Can somebody PLEASE give me a working link to Windows Essentials 2012, preferably the offline installer? It's not on Microsoft anymore, and I want to use the Live Mail and Photos apps in place of the default Win10 apps.

Answer:Where on Earth can I download Windows Essentials 2012?

Hi Stargate38

I trust this site. That said please scan with your AV. Hopefully Live Mail is included.

While Live Mail still works for a lot of people it could stop at any time depending on your mail supplier.

Sorry I call bogus. No way in H E double hockey sticks that Norton gets 4.5 stars and MBAM gets 3. Not to mention they use an old outdated version of MBAM. They compare version 1.51 when version 1.62 has been out for a while now. That just shows that PCMag doesnt want to step on their advertisers or people who pay them money for good reviews. Norton has done this in the past with PCMag and everyone knows it. They had the most adverts in the published mag and they still get favored on their online only mag now.

Not to even mention the fact they dont even test MSE at all. Funny how they test so many, but yet they dont test the one from the OS Developers themselves. PCMag can take a long walk off a short pier. They are only padding the ego of the people who write them checks. They are not nor will they ever be a publication to read if you want real results and feedback. They only care about who lines their pockets.

Have attempted to get Photo Gallery and Movie Maker on my Win 7 Pro computer. Installed Windows Essentials 2012 which is supposed to include these two programs. The only program that installs and shows up on the computer is Microsoft One Drive. Did a search of the computer but did not find either program. A number of websites discuss this problem and offer solutions. I've tried all of the solutions. None have worked for me. My computer specs are more than what is required for these two programs, so that isn't the problem. I'm beginning to wonder if these programs have been eliminated by Microsoft.

Any ideas would be welcomed.

.. hoping I can get some help on this. Driving me nuts!

Since upgrading to Windows Server 2016, WOL doesn't work for me. I've ruled out network or router issues, since it works perfectly fine on my Windows 7 machine.

I have 3 NICs in a team, but that's irrelevant, since the WOL doesn't work even if I disabled the teaming. One thing I did notice is that when I shutdown my Windows 7 machine, the NICs remain lit. However, the NICs on my Windows Server 2016 completely turn off. I don't recall if that was the case when I was using 2012 on the same hardware, but it seems strange to me. If the NICs are completely off, I can't imagine there is a way for them to receive magic packets.

I checked the UEFI and all the necessary options are enabled for WOL. I also tried upgrading the NIC drivers on the server but that didn't help. I read that Windows 10 has a "fast startup" option that messes with WOL, so I disabled it in the Group Policy settings on the server, but that didn't work either.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful for the help.

We run a web proxy server on our network for internet access.
On client machines (running Windows 2012 R2) I have configured the proxy server setting in Internet Explorer "Tools\Internet Settings\Connections\LAN Settings" to point at the designated web proxy server.
When attempting to browse websites from IE I receive the "The proxy server isn't responding" error.
Conversely, browsing the same sites via Google Chrome and Firefox (installed on the same client server) return web pages without error.
In addition, if I run Internet Explorer as administrator (Right Click\Run as Administrator), I am able to browse web sites without receiving the error.
It would appear that the issue is isolated to browsing via IE when not run in elevated mode.
Has anyone come across this issue?

Answer:Server 2012 R2 - Internet Explorer Proxy Server Issue

Hi Dicki,
First, please try to reset the Internet Explorer. Some plug-ins may affect the proxy.
If it doesn't work, please try to perform a network capture on the client.
Please check if the client send the http traffic to the proxy server at the correct port.
If the client has sent the http traffic to the proxy server, please check if there is any warning or error in the proxy server.

Hey there,

As often said...long time lurker. Recently installed a copy of WS2012 Datacenter I received to play with and learn more about. I have pretty much zero Windows Server background knowledge (I don't count WHS...which I have running as well).

So, my question...I created a Storage Pool, and then a couple Volumes, and then Shares.

My embarrassing noob question...how do I access these Shares?

I can locate the server on my network, and know the IP address of it.

I created a User account so that I don't need to use the Admin account for general use.

My goal:
Access the Share I created from my MacBook Air so that I can read/write files from it.

Thanks in advance for tolerating my WS "noobness."

Answer:Accessing Windows Server 2012 Server Pool Shares

Not sure how to access it from a mac, but on a windows box you can just run \\%servername%\%sharename% and it'll launch it in an explorer window. Should be some sort of network browser on the mac to allow you to type in the unc.

Hi , Im experiencing problems when transfering video from my Sony Handycam (DV) to my PC , or perhaps its better to say that the problem is with the quality of the video once burned. Whilst if connecting the camera to the TV gives great results on playback , I have found the picture quality is grainy if the video has been captured/encoded/burnt to DVD. I have used Sonys software , Nero and Roxio all with disappointing results. My PC has XP , and Im using the firewire cable that I was forced to buy as Sony didnt provide one.
Any help will be very gratefully received.
Thanks in advance - a very frustrated Rob.

I am new to transferring from camcorder to pc so would be grateful for any help..
I bought one of those Video-2-PC kits off e-bay which is basically a USB cable and tutorial video. I managed to transfer from the camcorder (Sony Handycam TRV460E) and produce a DVD but have to say, was very disappointed with the results. The video quality was not as good as the original.
I since learned that firewire was the way forward and should expect like-for-like results.
I installed a firewire card (Startech 1394A) into my Dell Inspiron 660s tower. The results are pretty much the same as with the USB cable.
I have read that I should get a perfect digital picture using firewire.
Can anybody point me in the right direction please. I have spent about £60 already and am getting nowhere fast......

Answer:Poor video transfer quality

What was it that was poor about the quality? Fuzzy? Washed out colour? Jerky movement? And: I assume what you're importing is an .avi file? What are you using (software) to transcode it to DVD format?

I've been transferring some VHS tapes of a favorite tv show that was on from 1982 to 1988, to CD. The tapes are 20+ years old. I've "exercised" the tapes periodically as advised in Video magazine a few years back. The first five or six tapes were fine, for their age, but I have begun to run into serious problems with tracking and dropouts. Usually when the program finishes capturing the video and I'm preparing to burn the show to a CD, the size generally runs around 400mb (about 600mb w/ commercials), but tonight, after capturing an episode and preparing to burn the CD, it showed a little more than 200mb in size! I noticed a lot of freezes as the tape played and was displayed on the computer screen. When I played the file in Windows Media Player, the playback was very jerky and I know many many frames had been dropped.

I don't suppose anyone has any suggestions to offer about this. I sure don't know of anything to do. I know video doesn't age well, but this is awful.

I am using a Plextor ConvertX M401U with WinDVD Creator2 for the transfer process. The tape is playing on a brand-new Sanyo 4-head VCR. I hate to waste CD-R's when the capture drops so many frames.

Sally

Answer:VHS tapes in poor condition, transfer to CD

The dropped frames are not the result of the poor tape in reality, but the inability of your CPU to concentrate on the task.

What are the PC specs?

I am getting pitifully poor transfer speeds from an XP box to 2003 box. Ive tried using ftp, as well as other copy programs, even cmd line.

Task manager indicates that with any single connection I top out at about 5% of the 100MB capacity. I can open several connections and transfer in parallel with each connection topping out around 250KB until the processor gives out from too many concurrent tasks.

Interestingly, I tried ftpng to a different machine which then referenced the drive on the target through a network share. For some reason this setup tripled speed per connection (750-800) but still no where near theoretical limits. Again I can open several concurrent transfers, each topping out at about the same speed until the processor gives out... the best I have achieved so far is about 20% utilization.

The drives in question are all 7200 RPM with 16MB buffers (IDE). I have also tried different controllers on the source and target machines without change.

This leaves me to believe that the nics or the switch may be the bottleneck. However, I do not understand why a net share from a different cpu was faster than straight to the target. I also fail to understand why I cannot acheive the same 20% utilization off a single connection?

I have looked around for settings in XP or 2003 that might limit individual connection speeds but nothing seemed to make a difference.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

So Im finally putting my big boy pants on and setting up a real home server. There are going to be 3 main uses for this server

1) Home server - Mainly for streaming to all my raspberry pi's and other windows devices but also as a network drive for my ssd only pcs

2) Remote server - Grabbing files away from home, remote vnc etc

3) Web server - Been working on a small personal website for a while now that I want to be able to host myself once it goes live. This isn't my main use for the server and if it isnt going to jive well with my primary uses I can always build a seperate pc for that use.

So if cost wasnt a concern between home server 2011 and server 2012 which would you choose based on my planned usage? I plan on using drive pool or drive bender with whatever I choose. So I would also appreciate some recommendations on which application you would choose with your choice of operating systems. Also, I can't seem to find definitive differences between the server 2012
releases (standard, foundation, essentials) It seems to be more of a licensing thing, so furthermore, which version of server 2012 would you go with?

Sorry guys, Im a total noob at this

Answer:Home server 2011 or Server 2012?

Personally, I'm going with WHS2011. I'd rather start with an OS that has most of it's bugs worked out, over an unknown. Since you can get a license for ~$50, why not start there to get your feet wet, then upgrade to Server 2012 once the kinks have been worked out?

Am having some performance issues with regard to bootup and internet connection speed. I have DSL but the fastest download rate I can get is 170kbps and should be around 1200kbps for my area. Is there someplace I can check the settings and or restore defaults. The other problem is that when the blue dell logo appears startup it just sits there for 5 to 10 minutes before finally booting up. Any advice or help that might guide me in the right direction would be appreciated. System is a Dell Dimension 700mhz P3 WinXP/SP2.

Thanks

Answer:Slow startup and poor internet transfer speed

Generally it is best to break up your post into separate posts for each problem, but let me take a stab.1. Have you used one of the on-line tests to determine your exact d/l speed?http://www.dslreports.com/toolsIf this tests significantly lower than the speed promised by your provider, you should call its tech support so they can check your connexion.2. There may be several causes for slow booting. One of the most common is that your computer is loading too many unneeded applications when it starts up. There are many applications, such as Spybot Search and Destroy, that list what is being loaded on start up and allows you to delete them. To determine which to delete, look these up at BC's Startup database.A second possible cause is spyware, which can be removed by several good, free applications like Ad-Aware SE.Another possible cause is lack of maintenance. Deleting junk and unneeded files, running scandisk, and defragging should be done on a regular basis.Hope this helps,Regards,John
