Windows vista update not working error 0x80070005

Question: Windows vista update not working error 0x80070005

I've tried so many ways to repair this issue using Microsoft fix it, renaming distribution folder in services.msc and through CMD prompt. I've followed all solutions through many websites using google but none have helped. I've also tried to re-register .dll files.
Does anyone else have any other solutions?

Preferred Solution: Windows vista update not working error 0x80070005

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you want us to check the validity of your license, post an MGADiag report

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.
As first steps in your problem installing SP1 (which is probably nothing to do with any non-genuine status) please follow these instructions...

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a ... Read more

Have you scanned for viruses and spyware or tried to clean your registry.  Those are some things you can try if you are worried.  I also have an hp and noticed that it gets hung up on searching for updates if Windows has all of the updates.  Hope that helps

I have several apps that refuse to update with the error 0x80070005. Some of the apps include Groove Music, Microsoft Photos and Films and TV. Here is what I have tried so far.

1- Checked the time, date, time zone and region is correct. User account control is enabled.

2- Run the WSReset.exe as administrator

3- Gain full control over packages folder using the advice here:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...6b0107a?auth=1

4- Control Panel/Troubleshooting/View All/Windows Store Apps/run troubleshooter. The troubleshooter did a few things and also ran WS reset and reported the Windows Store cache may be damaged.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall one app but it refused to reinstall so I had to use system restore to get it back. I am the only user logged on as the administrator.

Is there anything else I can try? Your advice would be appreciated.

Kind regards
Chris

Answer:Can't Update Apps From Windows Store Error 0x80070005

Hi, please do this as a matter of routine:
From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

Then re-register apps:
Apps - Reinstall and Re-register in Windows 8 and 10

Hi Everyone

Apologies for not including any Log files at this stage, but I would appreciate your thoughts on the following:

I've just installed Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium on a new SSD for my aged Acer Aspire 5920G. Following installation, many updates, including SP1 were automatically added through Windows update.
I then came to Activating, and when it was refused, suddenly realised and remembered (after all these years) that I had in fact purchased a retail version of the Upgrade, and had originally installed it over the top of Vista.

After searching Seven Forums I found and used the work-around binary file, provided on these forums for such a situation. With this I successfully Activated.

After continuing to install s/w and generally set things up, I realised that Windows update was no longer running. I manually set it going, and it has just continued to search for updates for hours without anything else happening. Further investigation using the MS Fixit tool revealed the Error code 0x8007005, (Access Denied, as I've since found out).

I've tried every fix I can find, including SFC Scannow and SubInAcl, without any joy.

Am I correct to assume this has been caused by my clean install of an upgrade version? Can anyone suggest a remedy without me having to start again with a new full copy of Windows 7?

Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.

Basically when I tried to do a windows update, it downloaded about 5 other updates and installed them, but 2 updates did not download. Instead of "Downloading [updatename]... complete!" it says it failed. I tried to download/install them again after a system restart (had to restart for the updates that DID install) but no luck. I tried disabling my firewall and antivirus and tried again, didn't do anything. The error code is 0x80070005, and it just says to install the update again (which I can't do...). Specifically, the updates are "Update for Windows XP (KB951072)" and "Security Update for Windows XP (KB950974)"

Is anyone else having this problem or have any idea what to do?

Whilst attempting to update from build 16176 to 16179 it fails with error Windows 10 Insider Preview 16179.1000 (rs_prerelease) - Error 0x80070005

Finds this update and downloads a KB then starts to install 16179 but quickly stops with this error. I've tried stopping all non MS services and startup programs and rebooting but it still fails. I've also followed numerous different suggestions which got extremely complicated but had no effect.

DISM restorehealth can't find the files and I don't have an ESD/ISO for build 16176

I tried to reset my windows but it only offers a total reinstall losing my software and settings which will be a PIA to rebuild.

I could wait for the next insider release and see if MS have fixed it or is it a problem on my particular PC?

Hi golfdesigner -

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

I suggest that you download a fresh copy of Atomic Clock Sync v3.0 from HERE to your desktop. Then right-click on the icon; select Run As Administrator and try the install again.

Prior to the installation attempt again, be sure that the following is adhered to per the IMPORTANT NOTE area of Atomic Clock Sync 3.0:

I recently did a disk image to move my os to a SSD. It had all my drivers and a few games and programs added by me. I'm not sure if the problem was happening before the move or not, didn't notice until after the move. I went about setting the computer up how I wanted, installed tons of stuff. Then eventually I noticed it would indefinitely search for updates, and so I went on looking for ways to fix this.

I have watched numerous videos, read numerous forums on this, and tried many things. I will list the things I tried. I first tried manually installing certain update packages that might fix it. I tried checking for viruses and malware, also checking the firewall exceptions on my virus software (norton). I tried stopping BITS and windows update services and then clearing the update cache. I downloading an updated version of windows update agent. Then I tried running windows update diagnostic tool which apparently fixed some problems and gave me the above code saying it failed to fix it, and finally I tried to use the cmd and software called subinacl to manually fix the permissions (not sure about this one working right). I have seen several different commands that are used for this, and I have made multiple different .cmd files that are meant to reset the permissions, from different sources online. I have seen in videos when people run these they zoom through commands on screen, and mine just pops open a cmd window for a second and then it disappears. So each time I'd try... Read more

When I click on System Restore to do a manual restore it says it's turned off. I don't know how to turn it back on either. Also when I uncheck the Read Only box in the System Volume Information, it doesn't stick. It immediately comes right back. I feel that if I could get this box unchecked I'd be fine.

When I click on System Restore or type in rstrui.exe I get a windows that pops up and says that System Protection is turned off and then when I click on Open System Protection at the bottom the 0x80070005 error comes up. Also where it says Available disks, it says searching.. When I click OK, it says it cannot rescan the disks for the following reason: Access is denied. And yes I'm logged in as Admin....not Admin but I have Admin authority. What gives?? By any chance would Nero Back Up cause this? This is a fresh install of Vista HP x64 and I have a few programs installed but not much. I have 3 HDD's. A 500GB WD SATA, a 250GB Seagate SATA and a 80GB IDE drives. My C: drive is my 500GB SATA drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Oh and I had this problem before SP1 was installed too.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Vista System Restore 0x80070005 Error

Well as it turns out the problem was Service Pack 1. Vista SP1 isn't ready for public use. So you can install all the Vista updates that show up. I didn't even see anything for SP1. I actually downloaded it from the MS site itself. I'd say stay away from it until they've got it fixed or until SP2 is released, which won't probably be for at the very least another year or two!

Any apps I try and update attempt to install, but stay at 0.0mb downloaded, then it stops and produces this error:
The happens with every app.

I read on some other forums on why this may be happening and someone suggested that it was because I had changed the permissions to the WindowsApps (C:\Program Files\WindowsApps) folder so that I could view the files within it.
Yes, I did try and change the permissions so I could edit the files within (I couldn't), just for fun and to see if it'd make any differences, so that is what I assume the problem is.

After learning this I tried to reset the permissions, I have no idea how to, so I tried to replicate the permissions from a clean unaltered WindowsApps folder and it didn't work, no matter what I did. Windows Update doesn't even seem to fix it either.

So is there any way other than reinstalling windows to get the App Store working again?

3 computers, desktop running Ultimate and backing up to AC-powered external drive and 2 laptops running Professional and back up to USB-powered external drives.. Backups set for full data and included system image for all 3..

No problem with desktop (which backs up daily), but unable to successfully back up either laptop since Windows Update installed SP-1. Fails as below:

Error: 0x80070005 - Access denied

Both laptops were set to run backups once a week (since the external drives are not plugged in at all times).. and, never had a problem with the backups failing before..

No changes were made before or after SP-1, checked permissions, all set to Full Control, log in as Administrator with UAC off (only one using the computers).. Ran chkdsk on both laptops and both external drives and no problems found.. Ran sfc /scannow and also clean for both..

Tried disabling all non-Microsoft services except for anti-virus and bluetooth (mouse is bluetooth) on one laptop and backup still failed with the same error.. Seems to get to approx 97% - 99% before it fails..

Have found older posts referecing making sure the D: drive is not set for backup or system restore.. Have never used it, backups have always been to the external drives (L: on one laptop and H: on the other).

Other than a problem with the fingerprint reader on 1 laptop after the SP-1 update (had to go back and install the original HP driver), SP-1 seems to be fine and do not really want to un-install.. Not sure if I even... Read more

I recently have been getting the Error message Windows has encountered a critical error and will close in one minute.
I do not have the Brazilian financial Active X control that became corrupted, or if I do, I cannot find it. I have Vista 32-bit on an Acer Aspire laptop. This message comes up after I login and I can either access the Internet via Safe mode w/Networking, or do a System Restore, at which time the laptop works for about two or three times and then the error message comes back.
Do I have a bug? Please help!!!!

It still apears and I cant system restore as the restore points are latest with this issue.
This ERROR prevents me from troubleshooting components like my network and other troubleshooters.

I'm sure some of you have seen this error code in Windows 10/Windows Update, but I've got two updates in the Windows Store that have been frozen for forever.
I've done just about everything I can think of, plus the nuclear option from a post on Windows Central, but still nothing.
All I want to do is install Xbox Accessories and Aeries, but no luck so far.
Anyone have any other suggestions of something I could try to get the Windows Store to play nice?
Thanks.

Also, some of my programs can not update themselves, including World of Warcraft, off the internet, i feel it is because of the same error message, does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi all,

I'm in need of some help.

My stepdads computer stopped applying Windows updates after getting the following error: "Update Windows license and product key tokens failed with 0x80070005."

I've followed various advice and I'm now in a situation where Windows thinks it's unlicensed! I can assure you the PC has been licensed and trouble free for the past three years or so until this happened. I know the computer was taken away to a specialist and they removed some software in my absence, my step dad isn't very computer literate so getting exact information and timings is impossible.

The PC is still working, but this is a blocker to resolving another issue, so I really hope you guys can sort me out.

I've run chkdsk and scandisk, no problems there.

Thanks in advance

Also i cannot reset my phone ... check that your date, time, time zone and region settings are correct
Second, go to settings and check in accounts and sync your main account
If the above does not work, try a soft reset
Which kind of reset can't you do? Soft, factory or hard?
What's your current OS version and phone model?

Hey,
I've been attempting to upgrade my Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows 7 home premium but during the process an error occurs saying it cannot create the installation file or something. So i then copied all the files from the disk onto my external hard drive although it couldn't transfer one or two read only files. I then used the external hard drive to upgrade vista to windows 7, i got to the stage of 'copying windows files' but it then came up with the error 'Windows cannot install required files. Network problems may be preventing Windows from accessing the file. Make sure the computer is connected to the network and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070005'. My network was functioning perfectly and i doubt that is the problem. I think it may be something to do with the registries. I have attempt once before to upgrade to Windows 7 but i then got the Black Screen Of Death so i then down graded back to Vista. Now im really desperate to upgrade as my laptop 'HP Pavillion dv6000' is really slow when running Vista. Thanks for the support!

I had been away for about a month. Before leaving, I had run cCleaner on my Windows XP Pro-SP3 desktop (but don't know whether this caused my current problem.) Upon returning, I tried doing four Microsoft Updates (KB2820917, KB2808735, KB2813170, and KB2813345) from an Administrator account. All failed with Installation Failure, Error Code: 0x80070005.

First, I tried the Microsoft Update Autofix from http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update.
Issue persists.

Then, I contacted Microsoft Answer Desk; they said it could be Permissions or malware, but did not provide any solutions.

I clicked on the cCleaner backup to restore my registry, but that raised an error message: "Cannot import the file name. Error accessing the registry."

Can someone please help?

Thanks.

Try the following.

Click on the Start orb , type slmgr.vbs  in the Search programs and files.

When slmgr.vbs appears in Search programs and files ring click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

(This topic does not necessarily need to be answered since I will probably be switching to Arch Linux as my primary and maybe only operating system, but would be accepted if there's a fix for helping others in this situation.) I did some research on the specific error code 0x80070005 and from what people are saying is that I have to "reset" my pc, aka delete all my applications, which I have to reinstall after the reset process, which I really don't feel like doing again. Whenever I try to download an app from the Windows Store, it'll download, kinda install, restore previous user data, then say "try that again" "See details". I've tried the following, restarting my pc (the normal way), make sure my pc is up to date, disconnected then reconnected the WiFi, connect my PC to Ethernet, force close the Store in task manager, and did a full PC virus scan. Nothing seemed to work for me, and I'm running Windows 10 Pro "clean install" not updated from Windows 7, or 8.1. So if I happen to become a full time Linux user, I'll still help out anyone who needs assistance with their PC here at Windows Central.

after several years this morning, I got a black screen with a message saying the OS was not genuine. It is I have the retail upgrade disk in front of me. I upgraded from Vista. I tried several of the recommendations in various threads here all to no avail.

The activation application gives the error 0x80070005 "access denied" regardless of whether I try online activation or by phone. I even spent over an hour with MS tech support after I tried to activate by phone. They all agreed that my product key is good and they took remote control and tried a few things that didn't work. I've got a call scheduled tomorrow night with the next level of tech. Also my Office 2010 applications refuse to run with the following error: "...cannot verify license for this product....repair via control panel..." I did that as well and still get the same error. Don't think this is coincidental...

Any advice would be much appreciated. I backed up all "user" files just last night as well (coincident?) I'll start new if I have to but would rather not.

I've been experiencing a particularly frustrating problem since upgrading from Windows 10 Pro v1511 Build 10586.494 to v1607 Build 14388 a few days ago (update: I am now on Build 14390 with the same issue; Build 14393 is downloading now but I suspect it will have the same issue as well). In fact, this is the second time I've installed a preview build since I had the same issue going from Build 10586 to 14385 and decided to restore my backup.

The issue is odd because Windows is otherwise working fine. I have no crashes or stability issues, games, programs and apps all run as expected and the Windows Store is finding updates for apps and games and installing them. The issue relates ONLY to the Windows Store and its apps and games, specifically with the installation of new ones. Windows Update is apparently working fine (although at the moment it is only finding and updating Windows Defender anti-virus definition updates). The problem is if I attempt to install any new Windows Store app or game, where the storage location is anywhere but C: (I have the default apps location under Settings > System > Storage set to H) then they fail after a small sub-1 MB download with error 0x80070005.

What I have determined is the following:

1. If I change the Storage location for apps back to C: (which is my Windows boot drive on an SSD by the way) then new apps and games will download fine, even those which previously repeatedly failed with error 0x800700005 when the location was set... Read more

Answer:Windows Store error 0x80070005 when using a different location to C:

Regarding the Account_Unknown entries in my opening post, I've seen these accounts in the security permissions of folders on my C drive but they just show as S entries (i.e. with the Account_Unknown() part).

I checked for updates on the Store this morning and it found 6 updates; 5 for apps on my C drive and 1 for Forza Motorsport 6: APEX, which is located on my H drive. Needless to say, all 5 apps on the C drive downloaded and updated fine but Forza again threw up the 0x80070005 error.

This issue is absolutely infuriating me at the moment. I know I could delete Forza and with the Storage location for apps set to C redownload. However, while it would update from my C drive I would be unable to move it to my H drive.

If I try to take ownership of the H:\WindowsApps folder then I get a failed message which, I believe, is due to the actual Microsoft.Apex folder because if I try to manually apply Administrators permissions to that folder then I get an error for every file in the folder.

Can anyone help me with this please?

(P.S. This issue still remains if I restore my v1511 backup for a week or so ago so it may not just be an issue specific to the Insider Preview builds after all.)

Hello,
I tried everything to solve this enduring problem. We have about 10 pc's at the company. All with windows 7 professional x64. One of them fails to activate. We work with a windows 2008 SBE server domain
 - Activating online gives error 0x80070005.
- Closing the internet conenction and trying again gives me the option to activate through the phone method. Doing that gives the same error 0x80070005 "access denied".
We have no firewall enabled. Disabled mcafee antivirus.Tried logging in as domain admin and as local admin.
Does anyone has an idea about what i could try next?

Thanks in advance.

Hello

My vista home premium 64, service pack 1, cannot be updated. I tried to do all the advices that I was able to find in the differents forums and in the Microsoft Knowledge Database.

I uninstalled my antivirus and firewall security software, rebooted my systems, no success...I deleted the content of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, rebooted my systems, nothing...I donwloaded, installed and run the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista 64-bit. It ended ok, but still I couldn't update my systemI donwloaded Vista Service Pack 2, and I tried to install it directly from it, no sucess...I found this solution in the forums:
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc It didn't work
I tried to do also this, opening a command line window as administrator:
regsvr32 wintrust.dll /salso this
sfc /scannow no errors, doesn't work

Please, can you help me?

Best regards

Answer:Vista Update not working. Error 800B0100

Hi jlauriale, welcome to the forums.

I've seen 1 solution somwhere that might help, it did with me once. Windows Update connects using IEs settings, you could try to 'reset' Internet Explorer in the advanced settings tab. This will completely reset IE, including any addons you may have installed.

   Note
You will need to reinstall any addons you had, but try 1 at a time just in case it was 1 of them causing the issue
Hope this helps

Hello to everyone.

Since Windows 10 1607 update I am driven crazy with this error (0x800070005) which appears when I try to download new app.

Old Windows Store apps are working normally, but I can't download any new one. I tried several solutions I found on internet, without success:
1) powershell and command prompt commands for manual resseting store
2) WSReset.exe
3) that WIndows Repair software that is often mentioned
4) Changing permisions on packages folder, WindowsApps folder etc...

Not a single solution worked. I tried system restore, but once system updates to 1607, it starts again. It is clean Windows 10 install...

Only thing that worked: I made other account, local one. On that account, I logged in Windows Store with my normal account I otherwise use. On that local account, signed only to Windows Store, I can download apps normally. When I return to my standard account, I can install only apps that I downloaded to my local account before - but not other one...

Except reinstalling whole damn thing, migrating account to new one would maybe help... But it is a little too much to do now, so is there any other solution that I maybe missed? I really can not believe that I have to reinvent wheel (to create new my account) just to use damn Windows Store normally?

Thanks in advance!

I'm trying to install the Windows 7 SP1 x64 update and it is failing.  It runs through the install, then shuts down to apply more of the update, runs for quite a while, but ultimately fails.  When Windows restarts, it says the update process failed
with error_access_denied (0x80070005).
I've tried running the SP1 update readiness tool KB947821 and retried the SP1 update but I get the same error.
Microsoft documentation on this error says to try disabling your antivirus.  I'll admit I haven't tried that, simply because the only AV I'm running is MSE -- and I am assuming that Microsoft's own AV is compatible with their service pack.
Any suggestions or advice?  Thanks in advance.
Lawrence

Answer:Windows Store 0x80070005 Error when downloading new apps

Have you tried this, which I assume you've seen?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/968003

You could try (only) the permissions repairs in Tweaking.com's cautious free repair tool.

Note the comment
"If you get the error "access denied" or something like that, you might need to take ownership of the WindowsApps folder. See the article on How to take ownership and get full access to files and folders in Windows 10."

For some reason unknown to me, my Windows Media Centre will no longer work. I have checked my drivers and updated using Windows Update, to no avail. Following Microsoft instructions related to the error message I have prepared a diagnostic text file that is attached as per the MS instructions.
I would really appreciate a solution to this problem as it is making my machine almost useless to me.
Thanks

Answer:Lost Windows Media Centre Functionality error 0x80070005

Install, update and run a full scan with Malwarebytes declining the trial version unless you want to buy it later.

Run SFC /SCANNOW Command to check system file integrity.

If these are clean, go Control Panel>Programs and Features>Windows Features to Turn Off Media Center, reboot, and then Turn it back On from the same place.

Report back results.

As suggested from the title I've been battling with this error for a while now.
I am not sure when it started but this Windows 10 installation was a clean one directly from an .iso file from Microsoft meaning no tampering was done with it.
It is a legit activation from the start, so no tampering there either.
My Windows Update works (actual system updates), but any updates/installations regarding Windows Store just refuses to work.
I've tried multiple fixes I've found online:
Relogged in the Store - achieved nothing
Tried wsreset - achieved nothing
Took ownership and tried switching it around multiple times - achieved nothing
Removed registry keys as suggested on another thread - achieved nothing
Tried sfc /scannow - achieved nothing (it did find a dll file it tried to fix regarding gpu drivers but thats another problem in itself)
Tried running apps.diagcab (not the latest diagnostic app but it provided info which the latest one did not)
Interestingly enough it showed a problem:
"Service registration is missing or corrupt"
It ofcourse failed to fix it and now I'm stuck with no idea how to proceed further, I feel like I've tried pretty much everything.

Worthy note: Since the clean install back then I didn't immediately use my email account with the System knowing that it would create a user folder with the name of my email account, so I made a local account and then later just signed in with my email and associated the system with that. Answer:Windows Store 0x80070005 Error, tried multiple fixes which didnt work

Nevermind then as I have fixed the problem myself after numerous failed attempts.
This is what fixed it:
1.Downloaded a program called Windows Repair (v3.9.3 Free Version)

2.After installation run the program as administrator

3.Head over to the Backup tab and backup your Registry and create a System Restore point.

4.Head over to the Repairs tab and click Open Repairs

5.Select options: 1,2(Select Win Drive in my case C:),14,28(Completely Reset App Store) and 29.
I didn't select the side options but if you want to you can.

6. Click Start Repairs and wait
I wouldn't recommend interrupting it but I had some problems with the repair getting stuck at running some powershell commands (specifically command number 4). In that case I just closed the CMD window and it would continue with other repairs.

7.After its all done close the program and restart your computer.

8.Run the store and try updating/installing apps and it should work.

This is what fixed the Windows Store for me, every other step I tried achieved absolutely nothing.
I believe it was a permissions problem as the error code means that access was denied.

I hope this post helps someone else.

So I am having a rather unusual issue here....

I have been fixing up a computer which was loaded with malware/viruses. I have run the below software programs to help clean up the system:
- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
- Super Anti-Spyware
- HiJack This

After cleaning it up, I am running into one additional issue which is flagging my system as not being genuine

The system was purchased with a valid license key for Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

My thought here is that there is still some rootkit or rogue malware running which is preventing me access to this file. It is preventing access to other system files such as the hosts file, the ability to start/stop services through the services.msc console, etc.

Couple of things I have tried to resolve this:
- Microsoft support KB article 2008385 = https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2008385
- Disabled Plug N Play service within registry through CMD command
- Enabled Administrator account to attempt activation

After attempting these steps and performing a reboot, I am still unable to get around this unusual activation error. Please help!

Last time vista got an update was 2-19-2015. It sets until next semester. Upon starting it this month, I went ahead and updated norton. Well it had a newer version which did not automatically upgrade, and in that process automation, it made everthing screwy.
So I Had to restart into safe mode, uninstall norton, reboot and reinstall the newer version. Set windows fire wall, & defender on until norton was installed. After all that, I start to check for windows updates. Spinning endlessy,. But I thought sense
it was around 8 months worth it would take a while. After hours of waiting, I stopped, restarted and got error code 80244019,. Ifollowed all the instructions, safe mode full scan found  (SAPE.Vobfus.46b) detected

Rebooted and proceeded to services to reset there following instuctions to the tee. Still no luck on updates.
Have manually installed some security updates, I think every IE9 update since Feb. KB3073921, 3079904, 3087038, 3087985, 3078071, 3074886, 3065822, 3058515, 3049563, 3038314, 3032359, 3008627, 3035126, 3032323.
Still have the problem. And downloading updates via stand alone updater 1 by 1 is to much.
Is there a specific update that addresses this problem of windows updater?
Thank you

Hi,

I have Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 running on a Dell Inspiron 1520 notebook. My problem is that my computer is unable to install some updates from Microsoft.

The updater detects the available updates and downloads them but is unable to complete the installation. It seems to me that this problem started with the release of IE8, which was the first update that I was unable to install.

This is a problem I've had for a few months now (since the release of IE8 in July 2009) but as it hasn't come in the way of my regular computer usage, I've procrastinated on getting it fixed.

My first attempts at a fix were by following the instructions that were provided on Microsoft's support website which included repairing the vista installation with the original CD. When I tried that my computer restored to an improperly set restore point. Improperly, because the system description as shown by the Dell Support Centre shows anti-virus and anti-spyware programs as running on my computer when they aren't even installed! The restore action also brought back a lot of unused programs that I had thought I had uninstalled and deleted, such as the Firefox browser. I cleaned up the files and programs, re-installed anti-virus and re-tried the Microsoft fix with the same result. After that I was too wary to try anything again and decided to just leave things be.

However, my notebook is now approaching the end of its warranty so I'd like to tinker with it before th... Read more

Answer:Windows Vista Update not working

"However, my notebook is now approaching the end of its warranty so I'd like to tinker with it before that happens"

As much as I hate to say this, talk with Dell before the warranty stops in order to ensure that all things possible are in order.

If you go to the Dell site there is a option for live chat.

When ever there is a option it is generally best to use the warranty option whiles it is there. That is what you paid for.
Often during warranty issues the time stops while the problem perisists.

If after that you may have a question we will help in any way possible.

Fixing issues here on my mother's computer, it seems that Windows Update has consistently failed to update the computer since she purchased it.

When opening the Windows Update window, it displays 31 new updates, when you select to download the updates however, nothing happens.

The window says it is downloading updates, but never downloads anything (see attached).

I've tried turning both the antivirus software and firewall software off, I've even reinstalled them (ESET 4.0), to no avail.

I have another thread in the malware section (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=185916), but this problem seems to be unrelated, it has been ongoing since the purchase of the computer last year.

It threw up an error: 8007000b, and the microsoft help was actually helpful :O

I haven't been able to do Windows Update in over a year due to error code 80004002. I have tried to re-register the .dll files associated with Windows Update as many sources have suggested to do as a fix... but it hasn't worked for me. I just tried installing SP1 to fix this problem... but I get Internal Error 0x800703F0. One of the suggestions/fixes to this Internal Error is to check Windows Update to see if you are offered SP1 by windows update... but that's the thing... I can't update AT ALL... every time I try to check for updates it gives me error code 80004002. I don't know what to do, this has been driving me absolutely insane ever since this problem showed its ugly face.

If anyone knows how to fix this PLEASE let me know. I will worship whomever can get around this BS. :C

EDIT: Also - I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, and yes it's a legit copy.

You install is gone south. You will have to backup and do a fresh install.

Almost all of the suggestions i am seeing say the same thing you said you tried. There is this solution that has about 5 or 6 different .dll's to re-register have you done all of them?

Re: Windows Vista error code 80004002 - TechNet Forums

From a couple of other sites they have returned results of RAM or CPU overheating. So have your run Memtest86 to test your RAM? There is a suggestion to try this app out as well:

Download Dial-a-fix 0.60.0.24 - Dial-a-fix is a collection of known fixes which addresses issues with Windows Update, Microsoft Installer, and more - Softpedia

That might help you. There is also this solution that i have found:

Code:
Go to Start, run, type services.msc <hit enter>
Make sure that COM+ Event System is set to Automatic and is started, and COM+ System Application is set to Manual, and isn't started.
Then - download and install the update from here manually: When you use Automatic Updates to scan for updates or to apply updates to applications that use Windows Installer, you experience issues that involve the Svchost.exe process (WindowsUpdate Agent)
You will probably have to run the above software with the /wuforce switch.
Change to the directory that the update resides in (after you have downloaded it) from a command prompt - and type:
WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce <hit enter>
That might help. That is about all i can find right now. Ho... Read more

I bought a new computer with Vista Premium, and enjoyed the backup features. I upgraded to Vista Ultimate. Since then I cannot make backups anymore, it keeps saying the backup failed, error 0x80070005, access denied. The backup is on an external hard drive. I then erased previous backups, even formatted the external hard drive, but the problem is still there.
Thanks in advance for any useful suggestions...

Answer:Vista backup 0x80070005

Hi cwider

There's a blog entry by folks in the Microsoft Technet Backup team that details the most common backup errors & their usual causes. Here's the link to that blog --- https://blogs.technet.com/filecab/pa...-problems.aspx

And here's their explanation for the most common cause for your error:

File Backup fails with the following error: Access is denied. (0x80070005)
Quote:

This error occurs because the recovery partition is enabled for File Backup or System Restore and is almost full. To work around this, do not select D:\ as a backup source. Also, go to System Protection in Control Panel and make sure that D:\ is not enabled for restore points.

... We'll have to assume that to make sense of this explanation, you substitute the drive-letter of your recovery partition for "D:\" ...

Give their fix a try, and let us know if it doesnt' work, & we'll search for another solution. [Remember to do both steps of their fix - 1) disabling the recovery partition for file backup, and 2) disabling the recovery partition for System Restore].

Best of luck!

My client's Win 7 64 bit desktop PC will not run"Windows Update".... Can't say when this quit working.. possibly in the last 1-2 months... I now get the red "x" and error message "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running"... when I try to start it in "services", I get "system Error 5"....

Also, the downloading using E 11 doesn't work,,, get the message "xxxxx contained a virus and was deleted".... I have scanned the PC with combofix, Malwarebytes, Rougue Killer, and others, and nothing is found. Downloads work fine with Google Chrome..

Finally, I also see "windows defender" is now missing from this system.

Not sure if any of these are related, but need to get Windows Update working again

Any suggestions on how to get Windows Update working again? This PC is out of use by my client until I get this resolved.

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer~

I ran the microsoft fix it soultions for windows update normal then aggressive. Now I get this error while checking for updates. I tried to run sfc /scannow and then sfc /verifyonly but get the following error: windows resource protection could not perform the required operation. I also tried to install the latest service pack got the following error: error_sxs_componet_store_corrupt(0x80073712).
When I look at programs->installed updates nothing listed, also when I look at programs->turn on/off windows features nothing listed.

Window vista finds on error when it is updating. Its states that one update did not install. Error found: Code 643 Windows Update encountered an unknown error. I looked at other threads and tried fixit. However, that didn't fix the problem. Any other suggestions? In addition, my laptop has been running very slow. I am not getting any popups, or spyware. Is my laptop infected with a virus? Is windows update encountering an error because of the virus?

Any suggestions is appreciated. Thank you.

My former roommate called me this evening regarding his Windows Vista system.
The problems encountered were:
1. On startup, the welcome screen is shown for a few seconds.
2. After a time period of 5-10 seconds, the login prompt is replaced by a "Configuring Updates: Step 3 of 3, 0% complete" message.
3. 10-15 seconds later, the system shows the "Shutting Down" message.
4. Computer shuts down.
5. Safe mode is attempted by user, however the system merely repeats steps 1-4.

Help would be appreciated regarding the matter.
I think it may be a failure in installing one of Windows Vista's updates causing the problem at hand.

As for his system, it is an Acer Aspire 4520 notebook, one year old.

Hi all

Done a fresh install of Vista Home Premium SP2 on an old Sony Vaio laptop.  After activation I just can't get Windows Update to download anything apart from the latest Windows Update Client There's no error message, just "checking for updates" constantly.   It's been running for over 24 hours now with no progress.

Considering this is a fresh install - any ideas?

Cheers!

Hi, I'm running Windows 7 64-bit (I think) and I cannot run Windows Updater or switch on Windows Firewall. On a possibly related note, Windows .NET framework refuses to install or work properly on my PC.

Windows Updater: When I attempt to check for updates the updater simply says that the "service is not running" I have been unable to turn the service on by any method I have tried. Whenever I run the inbuilt troubleshooter and recommended Microsoft Fixit files, they merely say they have either fixed the problem or not detected the problem. Sadly, this isn't the case as the problem has not been resolved at all. When I ran the troubleshooter recently, it provided a report which I have attached as a .pdf in the hope it may help lead to a solution.

Windows Firewall: The Firewall says is is 'Not running reccommended settings' and will not restore those recommended settings if I ever click the button to 'fix' the issue. If I open 'Windows Firewall with Advanced Security' the program merely states "there was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in. The Windows Firewall with advanced security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer you are managing. Error Code: 0x6D9

I have seen that these issues have been solved on this forum before without system resets and hope such a solution is possible for my computer.
Thanks for your time,
Joel.

Answer:Help?: Cannot Update Windows & Firewall Not Working (Error 0x6D9)

First of all, welcome to BC !

The firewall and updater problems are very common symptoms of malware infection. Your best bet is to post this problem in the 'Am I infected?' section of BC and get any question of malware resolved before going looking for other possible solutions.

When you post there, include the make and model of your computer, as well as your operating system. If it is self-built, then list the main specs. And be patient !  These people are busy !  And if you are asked to do something which you don't understand, post back to them for clarification.

Hi!
I know there are tons of messages about how to install or force install W10 but I have a different error and none of the solutions seem to work.
I'm getting error 80244019 in WindowsUupdate every time I try to look for updates. I've tried since yesterday the force command line but it does nothing. I've tried also fixing Windows Update with WUdiagnostic. It "solves" 3 or 4 errors everytime I run it but it doesn't change the 80244019 error.
How do I solve 80244019 error?
I have also tried the MediaCreationTool way but when it's going to start the installation it says that I'm trying to install a different language, not the one that uses my OS so it won't let me upgrade The only way is wiping my files and apps and I don't want that. How do I change the language of the MediaCreationTool?
Thank you
PS. It's crazy how easy was for my other PC to install it and how impossible it is with this one.

Answer:Windows Update Error 80244019 and MediaCreationTool nor working

I have the exact same problem with the mediacreationtoolx64. I live in Denmark and i use english as language on my windows 7 pro. But instead of just checking the language used MS has decided to do some ber secret magic trick that i cannot seem to escape so that it wants to install a danish version of windows 10. This is SO annoying. How can they just assume that you want a danish version just because you live in denmark? There can be a million reasons for using another language and the user should be able to upgrade to the language that they already uses.

Hello, my Windows Update is not working: it returns the error 80073712. It has been like this for several months. I tried to do sfc /scannow but it says: "beginning system scan. This process will take some time" and 2 seconds after it says "Windows Resource Protection could not preform the requested operation". My Windows Help and Support doesn't work either as well as my Windows Features (when I open "Turn Windows features on and off" it returns a blank box). I also tried the "Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x86.msu" but it does not repair the error. I also scanned my system with Malwarebytes Antimalware and avast! to see if it was a malware or virus but i do not find anything.

In the other hand, my date and time is working as well as my search box.

I do not know what I have to do.
I have a Windows 7 Ultimate x86.
Thank you for your help

PS: I also tried some other things but I do not remember anymore what they were

Hi,

I installed Windows Vista Service Pack 2 sometime around the beginning of the month, and somewhere about that time I noticed that Windows Update stopped working. Whenever I check for updates, I get the following: Error Code 80070005.

I've tried some solutions I've found using Google and tried one I found from a while back using the search feature on this website, but no dice.

Is this another Windows Vista SP 2 problem...or something else.

Thanks,
Michael

1.1 SP1 is a very outdated version of Microsoft NET Framework.

Hello, i would recommend you using Microsoft Security Essentials as a anti-virus/anti-spyware program, i have found the MSE to be very good. I also would suggest running free of Malwarebytes , follow this site for complete instructions of how to use. How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to scan and remove malware from your computer
Get MSE here : Anti-Malware, Virus, Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials
Once you have used these to scan , post back results and we will go from there to see about these update issues please.

I have a Dell inspiron 1525 with windows vista. My laptop will not boot up after restarting for updates. Every time it gets stuck on a screen that says 0xc01a001d and it also says a file number and registry\machine\schema\wcm://Microsoft....It will stay on this screen for hours. I have also tried to restore to last known configuration and it does the exact same thing.

Answer:Windows vista update 0xc01a001d error

1. Insert the Recovery/Install DVD into the computer
2. Boot off of the DVD. When you first start your computer, the first screen you see should give you the key combination to press to enter a 'multi-boot' menu. On Dell's this key is F12 but it varries by each manufacturer. Once you find it and are at the multiboot menu, choose to boot of CD/DVD
3. When prompted (after it has booted to the CD/DVD) choose "repair my computer" and enter the command prompt
4. Type C: (with colon) and press enter
5. Then type cd c:\windows\winsxs and press enter
6. Then type del pending.xml and press enter
7. Restart your computer

That should kill any pending updates.

HiJackThis doesn't work properly with a 64-bit version of Windows, so both of your logs are inaccurate and incomplete.

They do show enough however to indicate some problems in that computer.

It's infested with malware, spyware, etc..

It has a very bloated startup load.

Several of its programs are very outdated.

It appears to be a Sony VAIO(desktop or laptop?).

What model number is it?

Hello, I hope everyone is have a good weekend-- better than mine at least!

I'm having some problems with Windows Vista Update. Whenever I try to install updates it says: Error Found Code 80072EFE

Now, I went to do a Windows Update after having some other issues such as Internet Explorer crashing as soon as it opens. Firefox acting quite slow, and the restore session not working correctly-- when I start firefox, it gives me an "well this is embarrassing" Restore Session window which says "Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page." This window is not new to me, but what is new to me, is that no matter what I do, when I push the "Restore session" button at the bottom of this window, absolutely nothing happens. The "Restore" button stays depressed for several minutes before graying out. And then that's it. I can open other Firefox windows and browse the net, but there is a noticeable performance hit.

Now, I realize that these are several different problems but I thought it important to mention it as they all started occuring at the exact same time. Everything was working fine before and then all of a sudden this morning, all of what I explained above is happening.

I guess I will mention that I did get that AV Security Suite virus a week or so ago and I did successfully remove it. Things worked fine for a week or so, until suddenly I started having the ... Read more

This is an indication that your machine is not clean, not as you think it is.Trojans and Viruses are the most stubborn pieces of code to get rid of completely and at times a full format and wipe is required to get rid of all traces of it.Chances are very good your still infected with a variant. Not being able to go to windows update and browser redirects are signs of a malicious program still has control over your system.Chances are your HOSTS file has been altered as well. You should try downloading and installing MalwareBytes and doing a full scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/You should most likely post to the AII section of the Bleepingcomputer forums, where trained staff will help you clean your machine at this link. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/Good luck.
