Typing any character now produces floating menu of chinese characters

Question: Typing any character now produces floating menu of chinese characters

I've used W8.1 for sometime and this morning I was surprised to find that typing any character in many programs (for example Live Mail or Chrome) produces a floating menu of alternate chinese characters and won't allow me to have Western original typed on the keyboard. I tried one Registry fix for WLM but it didn't work as a value changed to 0 reset itself everytime to 1.
Any ideas where to look to fix this? It's actually impossible to use the effected laptop as data entry of any kind is now effectively defeated.

Preferred Solution: Typing any character now produces floating menu of chinese characters

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Typing any character now produces floating menu of chinese characters

Solved......I went to Control Panel > Languages and saw Chinese had appeared after my default English. No idea why, it just had. So I highlighted and pressed the option to Remove.

I just received delivery of a mini camera/voice recorder that has an instruction sheet in both Chinese characters and also broken English...very broken! In fact, it's basically incomprehensible. Is there anyone viewing this that may be able to help me translate the instructions, because I can't get the recorder to work yet. The colors of the light indicators on the recorder and the instructions don't even match. All that I can observe is red and blue, while the instructions refer to a yellow and green in addition to red.....go figure. And yes, I've contacted the seller about this but they haven't responded yet. I strongly suspect they don't have a clue either...they're just merchandisers, not tech folks.

I've attached a copy of of the so-called English instructions, but if you can read Chinese please contact me and I'll send you or post the instructions written in Chinese characters.

Thanks for your interest.

Certain keys on my E540 keyboard will produce the desired character plus an extra character when pressed.  The keys that do this are q,w,e,r,u,i,o and p.  Each one produces a digit in addition to the letter; for example, pressing q produces q1, pressing w produces w2, pressing e produces e3, etc.  This happens only on the built-in keyboard.  An external USB keyboard works fine. As far as I know the built-in keyboard worked fine for years, then this problem suddenly appeared.   I've updated the BIOS and all drivers to the most recent versions, and installed all Windows updates. The OS is Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit.  If any one knows of a fix to this problem it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, JW

Our computer was constantly freezing so my roommate decided to go into many of the programs on the computer and delete whatever looked "unnecessay", however, the computer whiz that he is, he accidentally must have deleted some of the computer's graphic capabilites because now when we go to some web pages or music programs and even microsoft word, the character all come out as these crazy little hieroglyphics, in other words the thing is only good for downloading tunes at this point!!!! Does anyone know how to undo this, or what to do to redo it? I appreciate any suggestions because we have no clue:

Answer:Computer produces unreadable characters in most web pages and in word

HI, Have you tried to restore to as point previous to his messing around or why not start again. Do a clean install and reinstall all your programs. It might be quicker than trying to solve the puzzle any other way. Other than that you could try a repair install but you will have to redo the windows updates anyway and you might still have to reinstall some programs. Peace Mal

If I have a filename or folder name that contains chinese character, the PC will stop before POST/boot order. It will display the graphic card info and stops there.

I will need to reformat that partition in order for the PC to boot properly again. Deleting the file or folder will not help.

What is lacking here?

Hi there,
Not sure if this belongs here but its in regards to my Chinese character recognition problem. You see, whenever I have an audio file or folder, and the name comes up in simplified Chinese, I always get these squares that come up. However if I were to paste those squares into Microsoft word, I am able to view the text. When I'm on the internet or microsoft word, I'm fine. Its only when I'm in my documents folder (for e.g.) and I can only view squares instead of the file.. Does anyone know what I should download so that I am able to read file names & folders that are in Chinese?

Thanks

I've just done a restore from backup after a problem and the character sets are wrong on some of my application menus. All the English menus are correctly displayed in ISO-8859-1 (English)Simplified Chinese Mozilla Firefox menus are correctly displayed in Simplified ChineseHowever all the other Simplified Chinese versions of applications have their menus displayed incorrectly with ISO-8859-1 so its all unreadable garbage instead of Chinese.Within the applications and on the desktop all the filenames are correctly displayed in Simplified ChineseAlso I can switch between English and Pinyin keyboard input by clicking [ch20013] or [ch33521] on the task bar.I've checked Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options, under the Languages tab, and Install East Asian Languages is already selected.Anyone got any ideas on what's up?

Answer:Wrong character sets on menus (Chinese)

Great news - I noticed what was wrong  In the "Regional and Language Options" under the Advanced tab it asks for the "Language for non-Unicode programs"I assumed it meant it wanted the default language, which for me is English - United Kingdom. What it really means is that for non-Unicode programs such as my Chinese applications, what character encoding should be used to display menus and dialogs which aren't in English. As soon as I set this to Chinese PRC, rebooted, and re-installed the applications, everything now displays correctly. That is for Unicode English it displays in English, and non-Unicode Chinese displays in Chinese.Yippy

Question: Chinese characters

When reading text on some (not all) websites, I see Chinese characters in some of the sentences. Here is an example: "Coming back, we decided to take he other road."
I've contacted the author of the newsletter on this website and he has never heard this complaint before. I've checked the same website with two other computers and I DON'T see Chinese characters with my other computers. I've scanned the computer where these appear with Symantec Anti-Virus, Spybot Search and Destroy, Microsoft Antispyware and Spyware Doctor. My anti-virus definitions are updated when available via Symantec.

I don't have IE6 or any other program on my computer set to have the Chinese language as a secondary language.

It is possible that these characters are Japanese Kanji rather than Chinese.

I exchange email with friends in Japan and on Taiwan regularly but don't visit websites written in Chinese or Japanese.

I look forward to getting suggestions on what I should do to get rid of this problem, what scanning software to use, suggestions on what may cause the problem, etc.

Thank you very much.

The problem continues and I don't understand it at all. Sometimes Chinese characters appear instead of (") parentheses marks and sometimes just as the first letter of a word ("The range of communities in New Zealand varies from very utback uralor even uggedto pretty cosmopolitan."). Has anyone ever had this problem? Do you still have it? Have you been able to fix it? Thank you.

Did it when I first tried to come here.

Any ideas what this might be ?

I'm running Firefox, 1.5.06

Also, some of the sites/pages that I go to, and this hapens on

because when I'm here , http://www.tech-heaven.com/

So did the main url get changed here ? so that it bounces me to

If so maybe that has something to do with my problem. ?

I am trying to develop a software application which displays hebrew
characters with vowels. The character set is available for example in the
font Microsoft Sans Serif (see the Character Map). To correctly display the
hebrew characters with vowels one must overwrite the hebrew letter with the vowel. That is both characters must occupy the same character space
simultaneously, for example the letter alef (unicode 05D0) with the vowel
"tsere" (unicode 05B5). My question is can this be done easily in Word or
Excel and if so how? The idea of 2 characters occupying the same character
space simultaneously occurs for example when one underlines a character by
cntrl-u on the keyboard. Another example is the stikethrough character which can be placed on top of any other character. Is there some similar direct procedure within Word or Excel for causing 2 characters in general to occupy the same character space? Also, what type of code if any can one use to accomplish this within Visual Basic?

Answer:2 characters occupying the same character space

Think you are talking about using the extended character codes which are a combination of the ALT key and a four digit code. See here for the general idea.

http://www.einvite.com/info/charcodes.asp?Cobrand=eInvite&Site=eInvite

Here it is for french, you just have to find it for Hebrew. Makes no difference to me it is all Greek.

I have a weird problem, I can read webpages and even input Chinese characters on my computer but when I download a programme written in Chinese characters I can only see the annoying codes, how do I deal with this?

Answer:Can't read Chinese characters

You would have to have a Chinese version of windows in order to install a Chinese program in many cases.

I used to run Engish windows, and as you said, I was able to view Japanese websites, and input Japanese characters, but I couldn't install any Japanse software into my comptuer without the characters getting all messed up.

The good news is, the opposite is NOT true. If you buy a Chinese version of windows, all English software works no problem.

I have heard that Windows Vista will allow us to select what language version we want to run, and with the click of a tab, switch from language to language (like you can with a Mac). I hope this is true!

Hi. I'm wondering how to enable the display of Chinese characters on a Windows XP Home desktop. I've heard you had to go to the Regional and Language Options to install the East Asian language files, but on my laptop, which is a Windows XP MCE 2005, I never had that option checked yet I can see Chinese characters. On the desktop, they display as squares with numbers inside. Not sure why it would be different, since they're set up the same. It can't be browser-related as it occurs in both Firefox and IE. It's not a significant issue, but wondered why it was happening. Thanks,

Brandon

Hi Zaffy. I don't see a log from the Gmer rootkit scanner. Did you have trouble with that?

I'd like to try to get a more detailed log from GMER rootkit scanner.

Let's try this version of gmer.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)

Hi everyone!

After unfortunately having my Macbook Pro stolen, I have had to invest in a cheap little netbook that is still running Windows XP.

Firstly
- Can I even upgrade my netbook without it being really slow/crashing all the time to the latest version of Windows and would I have to pay (yes, I am that out of touch with computers I do not know).
- MORE IMPORTANTLY: at the moment Chinese characters (Hanyu traditional/simplified) are showing up as blocks on my screen. What can I do to see the characters properly?

I am currently learning Mandarin and it would be a lot more helpful if my netbook could display the characters, instead of having to rely on my iPhone for the majority of my learning.

Is there any update/program I can use that will allow me to do this?

System Info (from Control Panel:
- HP, Compaq
- Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, SP3
- Intel Atom CPU 1.60GHz
- 798MHz, 0.99 GB of RAM

I am not too concerned about getting it updated, mainly just being able to see Chinese Characters.

Thanks very much in advance and apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place,
CJoQ

Answer:Chinese Characters on XP Netbook

Hello,See if this link is of any help: http://mandarin.about.com/od/writingmandarin/ss/setupxp.htm. Arrow through all 5 pages.Regarding Updating:Most netbooks support 2 GB of RAM but come with 1 GB installed. Adding an additional 1 GB of memory would improve the netbook speed. I'm not sure if your netbook would support Windows 7 Starter Edition; however, it's been demonstrated that WinXP runs faster on a given netbook then Win 7 Starter does.

HelloI seem to be getting Chinese characters popping up in different places on my desktop. For example, if I right-click on my desktop, I can see this (please see attached). How can I remove them, please?I used to have Chinese installed on my keyboard via Windows (7) Regional settings, and I have downloaded a couple of Chinese fonts. However, I have removed Chinese from my keyboard, though I don't know what that 'Ink' attribute is (please see other screenshot attached). Thanks![recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]

Hi,

I have installed additional East Asian Lanuage Support.
Control Panel ->Date, Time, Language, Regional Options->Add other language.

On language tab,

I check install files for East Asian Lanuages.

under the sanme language tabe,

I click details-> I click

on the window that eventaully pop up ->

Add->Chinese Simplied Microsoft Pinyin

No doubt with the above steps, I able to read Chinese characters, but when I type Hanyu pin yin, the romanized version of Chinese characters, the system does not give me an option to choose which characters.

Answer:Windows XP Service Pack 2 not able to display chinese character option

Since you could read chinese characters now, you can use Google Pinyin Installer instead. You can type chinese with it using pinyin. Supports both simplified and traditional characters.

Download it at: http://www.google.com/ime/pinyin/

Note: The page is in chinese.

Another example is the stikethrough character which can be placed over any other character (albeit the procedure is a little more cumbersome). Is there some similar direct procedure within Word or Excel for causing 2 characters in general to occupy the same character space? Also, what type of code if any can one use to accomplish this within Visual Basic?

By the sound of it, you may have some 'nasty' rogue malware/spyware issues on your computer.

Having said that, and to get you on the "Road to Recovery"; I suggest that you go here; read the instructions very carefully; follow the steps to post a HiJackThis Log in the HJT Help Forum here. (Just click on the coloured Links)

Good Luck with it.

Hello all, Glad I found this forum... hopefully someone here has come across this issue and knows the fix for it.

First off, this is very new computer with Vista Ultimate (64-bit) and it has Norton and Guild Wars installed.
Here's the Problem...

Whenever I run Guild Wars, there is a new folder with Chinese or Korean looking characters for a name created with a guild wars sub folder. and if I try to do a screen capture, it creates an other folder (again with foreign letters and in both cased the folders are empty with only an empty guildwars sub folder being created) in the main guild wars directory. And I can not use the Template System in guild wars (this is my biggest concern) not sure why exactly but in the Guild wars chat box, it says that Guild wars was unable to save the template because it could not access/write to the folder ... or something like that.

has anyone come across this before? is there a fix to the problem?
I have tried a complete re-install of guild wars in the default spot (program files) also I have tried a complete install in C:\Guild Wars, as well as an attempt on a seperate partition.... all with the same result.... foreign folders on startup created and unable to use the template system in the game

Any help would be greatly appriciated!

Answer:Guildwars foder with Chinese characters

Hey all -

I'm trying to add support for one of my users to view and type in either Chinese (simplified) or Chinese (traditional) on Windows 2000.

I've checked the "Regional Settings" from the Control Panel, but it does not list any Chinese languages in the big list. WTF?

I've also searched the KB at Microsoft, but came up with bubkus. A few articles on how to choose one from the list, but nothing about your preferred language not being on the list.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

My system cannot display Chinese and Japanese characters. Korean characters and originally Chinese and Japanese do not have a problem after I deleted FNTCACHE.DAT in system32. On my Windows 7 system all of the characters work fine but on my Windows 8.1 system the Chinese and Japanese characters revert back to boxes when I booted my system up for the day to use. Hi, just switched from Win 7 to 10. I had initially added a Chinese keyboard setting for writing or reading Chinese (taking Chinese classes) and also a Chinese software. The software was uninstalled just prior to the update and the 2 keyboard things were removed after. Anyhow, that's it, I did nothing 'Chinese after that, and yet, when rebooting I got the above message, "this app (in Chinese characters) is preventing you from shutting''. How can this be? Where does it come from? Since my keyboard no longer has Chinese, actually doing a search for such a file will be impossible--besides the fact that I can't really read Chinese anyways. So how do I find such an app and get rid of it?

(BTW, unlike Win 7 now on boot I get HP Solution center loading as well and don't know what to disable since doing so may actually disable the printer.)

Hi,
I have a document on Microsoft Word 2002 with a couple of Chinese characters in it. I'm running XP. They appear as just some rectangles, even though the task bar in the bottom of the screen identifies the language as Chinese (Taiwan). That's the traditional Chinese characters. I've installed the OGAPluginInstall.exe file and restarted Word, but the problem remains.

I'd appreciate it very much if anyone has any advice on this. Thanks in advance,

Duh - Let me just put this here just in case it's useful for anyone else. Go to Control Panel and click 'Languages.' Click the option for installing Asian languages. It's about 250 Mb.

Also under "Text services and input">Details>Advanced, tick the top most option.

After the splitting I detached the keyboard and dried it, I cleaned it several times after it too. When nothing helped I even switched to a brand new keyboard, but even this didn't help.
So if the problem not in the keyboard, where it can be? Maybe it's the old connections of the keyboard and laptop? Maybe the connection is a little wrong? Or on what another levels the problem might be..

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium in English, and for some reason, Chinese characters SOMETIMES won't display properly. By sometimes, I mean that when I turn my computer on, and open a program that displays Chinese characters, the characters just display as boxes. But then I restart the computer, and the Chinese characters would display properly again. Then this happens again the next time I turn on my computer. Is this some kind of bug in Windows 7? Anyone else had this problem before?

I don't want to change the language of the UI, and changing the non-unicode program language to Chinese will change the language of all my applications as well, so that's no good. Any other solutions? Thanks!

I've googled it and it seems like some others have had similar issues, but i'd like to ask if anyone knows what this is all about.
If i copy paste the line seen on screenshot, then this is what i get:

Code:
蓤疖෫媁ᠢ钶븆옃ᢔꡰ缎⚯㦸䢐賴痖口帬ࠣశ꺮蘃긟嘿㥦ế嵾ᗽ烨޵system32\svchost.exe

I'm 100% sure it's not malware or any other type of malicious software, so please don't start saying that my pc has a virus.
What i'd like to know, is where it's coming from and why is windows 10 doing this?

In past, in win 7, i've seen similar chinese characters somewhere in documents and settings folders within some files, i was cleaning my files, going through all the folders in docs and settings and i saw some files having similar names.

It's a fresh install of windows 10, I haven't downloaded anything, but simple things, such as google chrome, ccleaner, winamp, skype ..etc, everything from trusted sources only, so clearly it's not a virus or malware, whatever it is, it's within windows 10.
I don't think it's dangerous, but i'm just trying to figure out why my PC is going chinese on me.

The closest thing I came to my subject here was the following discussion:
Windows not reading Chinese characters properly

In my case all is already set as such: Fonts are all accepted and used in many software, the language and keyboard settings set as such, etc. etc. In fact I could see/read my Chinese characters on a file name and within them (text) without problems whatsoever--all software Office, Adobe suite, Browsers, etc. can read Chinese . The thing is though, the one thing I can not do, is open a file which has Chinese characters in ts name. If I change the name to ABCD no problem, it's openable. but if I have even just one chinese character within the file then, no go.

Answer:Windows can't open files with Chinese characters

I believe that one must have Windows 7 Ultimate to load the Chinese language package.

D'you know when you click on a web-page, and a pop-up box say's... 'You need to install Chinese Language Characters to display this page corectly'...
Well, when i click OK, (yes) - to install the required language characters - It asks me to insert my windows CD - and then it fails, saying: the file xjls.nls cannot be found
And when i try to install East Asian Language Characters from my WinXP Pro CD, thru Control Panel/Regional and Language Options - The same thing happens !
My copy of XP pro doesn't auto-run - so when i want to - i have to start the install or repair using 6 floppies...(it being a dodgy copy the PC builder sent me)
The file isn't on the CD when i use windows search - (even when i use folder options to 'view all files')...
So - Can anyone tell me where i can get the file from, and whether it's just a matter of 'double clicking' it to install ?

Many thanks - Blo. :beard:

Answer:chinese/east asian language characters

I'm not sure if it works but you want to install the Language
packs in the Internet Explorer Browser. Go to Tools, Internet Options, select Languages at the bottom, then click add and
install the different Languages you want the Browser to support.

You will need to close and reopen Internet Explorer for this
to take effect most likely.

The same problem occurs for several Traditional Chinese characters input method, for the same Chinese character.

Hey,

Have any of y'all seen a box that pops up with a blue border, at the top there is a penguin with 4 Chinese characters beside it. Below is another with QQ: then a box with 10000 in it, two or three more characters, another box with 10000 in it, then a small box with the image of a person in it, followed by 8 more characters.
Then below that is a larger box full of Chinese characters and some numbers. After this pops up, things deteriorate rapidly. The first thing we noticed was that the Task manager would not open. Others had other problems, eventually not being able to work at all.

I'm not asking for a solution. We have been looking High and Low, and we know how to use the tools available. I just want to know if anyone out there has come across this and if anyone knows where it came from?

hie..i would like to know is there any ways that i can read chinese characters in windows XP.I mean got any software or updates provided by microsoft ??I want to read chinese characters in Command prompt.Thankz for helping.!

Answer:Reading Chinese Characters In Command Prompt

Not sure but I don't think you can.I use w2k pro which has multi-lingual support. On my English version of w2k pro, even with Chinese support, I open a cmd window, turn on the Chinese input method, try to type Chinese, and it won't come out. If I copy and paste Chinese characters on to the command prompt, it still won't accept it.On my Chinese version of w2k pro, that's possible. So even if your XP is XP Pro (which also has multi-lingual support), but if it's an English version, I suspect you can't do what you want. What exactly do you want to do in the cmd prompt? Maybe there's a workaround.

Hello all,

This is a really strange problem. Both my laptop and my desktop can't seem to read Chinese characters properly. The languages are installed; I can type in Chinese just fine, but if I go to a folder that contains music files in Chinese or I open up Windows Media Player, the characters are all boxes. Just plain old boxes. Yet, if I choose to play one of these songs, the correct title will show up in my Windows Live Messenger status. I'm not sure why Windows Live Messenger can read it properly, but not Windows 7 itself.

Even if I go on google chrome and go on youtube, the youtube page itself will display the characters properly, but the google chrome tab label will be boxes. The screenshot should clarify.

If anyone has any idea, I would really appreciate it. One thing that I have noticed is that if I connect my Sony mp3 player, suddenly all the characters will show up perfectly, so I really don't understand why this is. Please advise.

Thank you all in advance =D

Answer:Windows not reading Chinese characters properly

Try this:

Start> Type Fonts in search box and press enter> When fonts folder opens, click on Font Settings on left navigation pane> Untick Hide fonts based on language settings> Ok your way out.

If no fix, right click on the Ming Liu fonts in the fonts folder, and select Show. Restart to see changes.

Question: Chinese Typing...

Hi,

I do a lot of typing in Chinese, because I am working to get my official Chinese language status recognized by the government (Even though it's my first langauge...) and this requires ALOT of writing. I hate writing Chinese by hand because I have horrible writing, plus I am left-handed, so my strokes are all backwards... Anyways, I recently got a program called NJ STAR Communicator, and you basically type Chinese with it using the "Hanyu Pinyin" method. You type in what the word sound like using Latin letters, and bingo, it shows up as Chinese. Originally, there is only ONE font you can use, and that is the bland looking MingLiu... So, as a solution for this bland font, I downloaded a WHOLE bunch of Chinese fonts which are really cool...

The only problem is that certain words show up in the new cool, professional looking font, and others (the ones that have an equivalent in Simplified Chinese... Coincidence?) don't change at all... I've tried everything, even typing in simplified Chinese (although my course in traditional...) Anyone with ANY knowhow regarding Chinese typing software, please help me... This is kind of urgent. I've tried to be as specific as possible, so I've included 2 screenshots describing what I mean.

Answer:Chinese Typing...

You can visit the link below and it will help you to enable the east asian languages in your system and enable you to type in chinese language in office applications.

My Keyboard will all of a sudden start typing a different character when doing an Internet Search. If I go to word or other program the keyboard works fine. If I restart the computer the keyboard will once again start working property, but after a day or two it will once again start typing incorrectly for both firefox and IE.

I do not think it is a hardware issue being it types fine in programs such as Word. I have CG installed. I am not sure if this is malware or something else. I tried hitting NumLk but that did nothing.

Any suggestion on what to do next time this happens.

Notebook I have is HP Pavilion dv7-4120em Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed.

I'm using Windows 7 in English language, but besides English keyboard layout, I have additional keyboard layouts installed for Slovenian an Russian language. My native language is Slovenian and this type of keyboard layout I use primarily. I have a very peculiar problem. One day the character '}' stopped working. On Slovenian keyboard it is generated with AltGr+N combination. But NOTHING happens! Left curly brace '{' is generated as expected with AltGr+B combination. It is really annoying as I earn my living with application programming in C++ and I really need this character. I can produce this sign with Alt+125 combination. Now this is strange or what?

I also tried English keyboard layout and character '}' is generated without a problem, but here the combination is different Shift+].

I've called Microsoft Slovenia tech support and they have no clue. I've called HP Slovenia tech support and they also have no clue. I can't believe it!

Is there any way to diagnose/debug the problem? From keyboard driver key press detection to keyboard layout id mapping to finally user space representation? I really, really don't want to reinstall Windows for this.

Thank you for all the help and suggestions!

Answer:Keyboard character '}' not generated while typing

Hello RustFree, welcome to SF!

Hi Everyone,

I'm working on Windows XP and on two PC's, I'm unable to manually enter in special characters using the Character Maps unicode. I can copy and paste without any issue, but if I'm manually entering by using NUM LOCK and then the ALT + keys combination, nothing happens. I'm using a Logitech diNovo Media Desktop Laser keyboard but the other PC is just simply a standard keyboard / mouse set up.

Any ideas please guys?

Thanks,

Paul

Answer:Character Map - Typing Code Issue

Your problem IS your Logitech diNovo Media Desktop Laser keyboard. Are you sure your Keypad is on (Numlock ON, numerical entry)? Test it using Notepad, just use the Keypad and type numbers.

What you are trying to do using the Keypad will only work with a standard keyboard using ASCII standard codes. These new fancy multi-function keyboards MAY not using ASCII standard for the Keypad.

By the way, why don't you just leave Numlock ON?

Hello all -

I am trying to do a Windows 7 reinstall from my Samsung Recovery disk, as I have a Samsung laptop. I have received the infamous "windows could not format a partition on disk 0...Error code: 0x80070057" error. Through researching this forum it seems the diskpart program is used to troubleshoot. However, the program only displays English from the command lines or numbers (i.e. - 465 GB). Everything else is displayed as Chinese or Japanese characters. Is there a way to change the language to all English? Thanks.

Answer:Diskpart not in English. Displaying Chinese or Japanese characters

Hello richarmb Welcome to the Seven Forums!

With a factory recovery disk that should automatically reformat and reOS the drive for you. That works along with the hidden recovery partition to bring everything back to how you saw the preinstall when first buying the laptop.

Since the manufacturer is actually South Korean with a US product and support site. Samsung - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia the default language for non user items would be in the native language and unfortunately not flexible like adding language packs onto Windows itself. You're dealing with hard copy media not an OS already install in that sense.

The only option for a clean install with an English version of the Disk Part tool would be borrowing someone else's 7 dvd and then entering the key on the sticker itself. But you shouldn't even be needing Disk Part with any factory restore option.

Issue: All Chinese characters I try to view in text editors are being displayed as squares.

I can view the file in a browser (Chrome) and the Chinese characters appear correctly, but in text editors they are squares.

Background: I recently installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1 along with many other updates. I had not been installing any updates (yeah I know) but I wanted to be able to edit files with Chinese characters in them, so I installed all the available updates.

After I restarted the first time, I was delighted to see that the characters which were squares before were now legible Chinese characters. However, when I restarted again, the characters were back to squares.

I checked for updates and saw a few optional updates were available. I installed them, restarted, and the characters were back to being legible. I restarted again and the characters returned to being squares.

Now there are no available updates and the characters still display as squares. This happens no matter what text editor I use, be it Notepad++, Sublime Text, or plain old Notepad. The file is encoded with UTF-8 (it's been that way during both when I could see the characters and when I couldn't). It also happens no matter what font I use.

How can I fix this issue?

I used Explorer++ as a replacement to windows explorer. Tested it's search feature to look for a AT&T text file. It finds strange Chinese characters that Windows search doesn't find.

Here is a pic.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I have no idea why it found these or why they are on my system. I'd look at them in a text editor then copy and paste the contents to Google Translate to see what these documents say, but they are not click able. No location address is given for these files either.

How can I make these clickable and open them in an editor?

Answer:Explorer++ finds strange Chinese characters - How to open them?

I see this got moved out of General.. it really is only a Windows question however.. it does not matter what program I used to find these Chinese files - (These files have nothing to do with the Explorer++ program) with any Chinese files on my system of this sort.. what do I use to open them?

Windows itself must have some way to access and display the contents of these files. Do I need support for Chinese characters before a text editor will be able to open them? I want to know.. why are these files in Windows not clickable.
