How do i change search settings in windows 10 mobile a different search setting?

Question: How do i change search settings in windows 10 mobile a different search setting?

From time to time I think the search settings compromise the search. Where do I find this setting.

Preferred Solution: How do i change search settings in windows 10 mobile a different search setting?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Which build are you using?

In 10061 I find that if you start your search with "mystuff:" then it only searches locally.

However, message "your search settings have been restore their default settings" comes up when I open Firefox nor IE and the search engine automatically change to yahoo by itself.

I change it back to google but the same message comes up when I open a new window.

Hi,
I have downloaded Google Chrome on my home pc which is running Windows xp professional SP3 and I kept getting numerous warning boxes in the bottom right hand side of my screen saying "an attempt to change your default search setting has been blocked".
It is driving me mad, as everything I try to do to stop it just fails and it keeps returning, sometimes 3 or 4 times at once.
Can somebody please help me get rid of this message once and for all ??

Answer:'an attempt to change your default search setting has been blocked'

that will be your antivirus or anti-spyware program alerting you to the fact that chrome tries to change the default search from MSN to Google

there will be a setting somewhere in your AV to allow the change

what antivirus/antispyware are you using?

or try this

This is really getting on my nerves now, I have been trying to fix both issues for hours now and no avail.
Lets start with the first issue, if I try to search in settings, it just says "search results aren't quite ready yet". As soon as I type anything in fact, it doesn't even take the time to search in Settings, it just immediately says that.

I have tried the following solutions:

1- "sfc /scannow", "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth" and "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth". Neither of these 3 commands gave any errors

2- Indexing: I have rebuilt indexing several times and made sure that the integral parts of the C drive are selected. Note that I have set indexing to go to another drive (H) however I have reset this back to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft" and this made no difference.

3- Some people have said that it is because my language should be set thoroughly to 'United Kingdom' and that you need to download the UK speech pack so I have set all my language/region/speech to 'United Kingdom'. This however brought up another issue - if I open up the start bar and search for anything related to the settings options such as "Cortana" or "Display settings" or "windows update settings" (basically anything under settings heading), I can't click on any of those options... If I switch my language back to "United States" then the setting options in the start bar are clickable again... Read more

Answer:Settings search not working and start bar not clicking setting options

You coul?d try the Search and Indexing troubleshooter, in Control Panel/Troubleshooting/View All(top right column)/Search and Indexing

I went messing around in about:config on Firefox 16.0.2 I wanted to change my default search settings for when I type something in the address bar. Well I found an article and it said to type in about:config, search for keyword.url, click on it and it will open a dialog where you can edit the keyword.url string., then I changed the string EXACTLY to http://www.google.com I closed Firefox, reopened it, and then when I tried to type ANYTHING in the address bar it would open up a Save As window. So I opened my Chrome and IE browser, same thing. I got worried that I really messed something up, so I uninstalled Firefox. My question is, did I mess anything up on my computer? I want to reinstall Firefox, but I just want to make sure everything is okay. I am just a casual internet user, so yes I learned my lesson not to go messing around with things. But, any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:about:config Change search settings

If you type ANYTHING (include website address) in address bar, so the problem should not be for "search engine"
Reinstall FireFox and tell the result.
You absolutely didn't messed up anything, don't worry, No problem if it even down.
All of us messed up to our systems many times, then we learned how to fix that !

Hello. I recently installed CamSudio but I don't know what happened that the initial page and the default search provider of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome were suddenly changed to www.searchult.com.

I have Windows 8.1 Pro.

I ran several tools to try to get rid of this: malwarebytes, adwcleaner, Junkware removal tool and Superantispyware. I ran then until they told my system was cleaned.

Then I erased all the settings of chrome, explorer and Firefox several times.
And then and I ran CCleaner and delete all the temp files.
And then I modified the shortcuts for Chrome, explorer and Firefox because they were loading searchult.com
Then I disabled some suspicius scheduled tasks and one suspicius startup program.

It seems that Explorer and Firefox are cleaned but I just cannot get rid of the default search provider of Chrome.

When I try to edit or delete it,  it tolds me "This setting is enforced by your administrator".

I erased all the registry keys under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Policies/Google but the problem persisted.

Please forgive my english, I don't have many oportunities to practice it.

Would you help me to get rid of this nasty search provider.
Thank you for your kind help.

I am running Win 7 64x on a Core i7 920 processor system. I boot from an 80 gb SSD drive, but my user files and all my data are on a separate traditional hard drive. I have Secunia running in the background, as well as Win 7's built in firewall. For the last several years, I've been running Avira Antivir, but in the last week, I switched to MSE.

I have never had malware issues until about 2 weeks ago. My wife and I noticed that the computer seemed to stutter when typing, then catch up. Also, randomly when scrolling, the system would suddenly freeze, allowing the cursor error to pass by it, then catch up after a second. Both symptoms would happen every few seconds on a variety of programs. I suspected a virus, and ran several scanners, starting with the virus scanner built into Avira Antivir free, which immediately found several viruses that I then removed (forgive me, I did not write down their names). I then ran Spybot SD, which found several more malware programs, which I removed (again, I did not write down the names of the malware finds), then I ran Malware Bytes, which also found culprits, which I removed.

After this, the stuttering stopped. I rarely use Internet Explorer, preferring Firefox, but a few days later, I mistakenly clicked on Internet Explorer (version 9), which to my surprise just showed a blank, white screen without status bars or anything. No matter what I did, the screen seemed frozen. Then, after a minute or two, my home page would fi... Read more

Hi, some days ago I noticed something went wrong and I'm completely unable to access Gmail's front page from my computer, that means I can't even get to the Login page. I found about it on Chrome, then I tried on Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3, and finally on Internet Explorer... None worked...

If I click on "Gmail" at the top of Google's search page... it inmediately throws me this:

[ B]SSL connection error.[/B]

Unable to make a secure connection to the server. This may be a problem with the server, or it may be requiring a client authentication certificate that you don't have.

More information on this error
Below is the original error message

I am also unable to set Google's search settings, when I try to save my search settings before running a web search it says:

Your cookies seem to be disabled.
Setting preferences will not work until you enable cookies in your browser.

But I checked and Chrome's cookies are enabled, I think whatever is causing this goes beyond the browser's settings, since I get this on Chrome, Firefox and IE.

What may have caused this:

I recently downloaded one of those registry cleaners, called CCleaner (and now i regret it... :P) As I was about to run it for the first time I selected several checkboxes that were unselected by default.

Which included both Firefox and Chrome's:

Hi,
I like to be able to search for a file quickly and efficiently, preferrably without involving third-party apps.

So when I press the Win key, I like that I can type into the search box directly, but it's annoying that the search scope is pre-set to "everywhere", as for some reason that's beyond me, I get file search results only on the first 2 lines. To get a longer file list, I have to manually change the scope to "files".

Is there a way to set the search scope by default to "files"?

Thanks

I just installed the latest preview build yesterday. And I noticed that some search functionality is now different. I want to be able to search for 'power options' right on the normal search bar. I can no longer do that. I need to first search for settings, open settings app and then search for 'power options' in the settings search area.

Is there any way I can go back to having the normal search display those settings too?

Hi

I took screenshots of both my Laptop and my friend's.

My Laptop:

searching for "add or remove" brings up nothing, even in the settings search
My friend's Laptop:

as you can see it works fine on my friend's laptop bringing up the settings i was searching for

I appreciate any help

I had no issues with my Windows setting search till some weeks back. Since my computer had an issue with entering sleep and when it came out of sleep , all programs were closed (as if its a restart), I had to repair the system. Basically I did a system restore and then updated the latest Windows 10.

But since then my Window Settings search has stopped working. For ex I could enter "Power Options" on settings search box, expecting it to bring up the Power and Sleep setting as a result, but after a while of search it brings nothing. I have already followed the resolutions given in this forum for the same but nothing works.

Welcome to TenForums @Levin

It might help if you said which 'resolutions' you have tried. If they were general 'indexing' fixes it may not be sufficient to fix your specific 'Setting app Search box' problem. This thread may be relevant as it specifies the exact folder that needs indexing...
Search in "Settings" does not work

I really like the details view. The File Explorer Details view works great on all folders. However when ever I search (which windows search sucks and is another story) it always REVERTS back to the CONTENT view, even though I set it to show DETAILS. I could not find a way for it to have the DETAILS view persist when I do search. I am posting a video that illustrates the issue
http://recordit.co/4PvjRiXYSv

In one folder for some reason it did stick to Details view , but not sure how.
I thought I can run the search and click on Folder options and Apply to all folders, but that is greyed out when in search.

it is just a nuisance

Thanks

Answer:Windows 10 Aniv (or older) Search Details view setting not persistent

Hi, if I search a folder in file explorer, and set the display to, say, medium icons, and close explorer, and then repeat that with a different folder, but set the search results to, say, Details, then if I go back to the first folder and do a search, the display is medium icons. The same with the other folder.

I.e. the format of the search results is remembered for a particular folder.

What I think you are asking for is all search results to be presented in a particular view, the same for all folders. Is that correct?

I've updated Windows 8 to 8.1 recently and for some reason settings search on start up page stopped working. If I search with "Everywhere"
selected I see results but settings entries are missing. I have another account on the same machine and there everything works fine. When I try to find some of the setting shortcuts on file system windows file search takes me to "C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel\Settings".
Both users are members of administrators group.
I've tried running "sfc /scannow" but there was no result.
I've noticed a strange error in event viewer but I don't know if it is related:
Crawl could not be completed on content source <winrt://{S-1-5-21-2367193382-1881007217-2607126721-1001}/>.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Answer:Windows 8.1 - Settings search doesn't work

Hi,
You can try to use Search and Indexing troubleshooter to see if it can identify the problem.
Control Panel->Action Center->Troubleshooting->View all->Search and Indexing.
Also you can use Dism command  to repair system file.
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Click the link below for more details about the command:

My Computer has developed a problem which so far I have been unable to fix.
I am using XP Home Edition. Up until this recent problem it has been running well. The problem is this.

When I click on My Computer, My Documents, the Recycle Bin or Search, Windows Installer tries to install "Search Settings 1.2" . You have to cancel out of it and then My Computer etc will open normally. Very annoying indeed.
Things I have tried so far and have been unsuccessful:

1. Running Spybot, no luck
2. Running Hijackthis, it has given me the following log file
3. cccleaner, no success
4. I have tried continuing with the install instead of cancelling out but there is no install, just a message referring to a non existant registry key -"UNKNOWN\SearchSettings.BHO.1\CLSID".
5. I have gone into add/remove programs and tried an uninstall but it gives me this message:"ERROR 1402 could not open key.Unknown\searchsettings.BHO.1\CLSID.Verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel".
6. I have deleted the search setting folder from my program files, but this has not resolved the problem either

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Hello there,

I recently have this problem that my Options for the windows search won?t save anymore. That means that I always have to manually set them each and every time.

Most of the time I use the search for Folders with a large amount of images and sub folders.
I search for ?.? To get all Files and Sub folders in my search. Of Corse I want them to be grouped by ?type? and Sorted by ?name? so my results are as easy do view as possibly for me.
I think I had to set this once and in every search after that it would automatically sort it like this.

However for a couple of weeks now, my windows just resets the search options after each and every search I do. It?s enough to open a folder within the search and backspace back into the search and it?s already back to showing every file without Grouping for Type.
It dosnt matter if I change the folder options to a different Folder Type the result is always the same No Saved group sorting or other sorting options get saved for the next search.

As you can imagine, this can get really annoying because I often use the search in that way. Having to reactivate the search and group options not only takes my time, no it basically resets the search itself each time. And doing this for hundreds of folders is just dumb, because it has never been that way before.
I had no problems like this in win 7, 8 or at the start of 10 but since the Cumulative update it won?t save whatever I do.
I am sorry If some of the Options are called ... Read more

I am using a Windows 7 system and I am trying to change the following settings:
I am trying to modify the box that contains the text "search programs and files" within the start menu search bar - this box only shows until you actually select the section to type in an item to search - while this currently shows as white I wish to change it as so it shows in a cyan colour.
I have tried modifying the themes however these don't appear to have had any effect on the issue - similarly going into the registry and changing the RGB values under "HCKU/Control Panel/Colours" & "HCKU/Control Panel/Desktop/Colours" doesn't seem to have had any effect.
I've included a link to a screenshot below which shows the box in white while using a "high contrast" theme.

Windows search is not able to search the content of pdf files when searching more than 4 digit number. I have pdf files in a folder when I try to search a content eg 7349, it shows the files which are having this number but if I increase the digits to one more e.g 73495, the result is blank. I have already indexed these files. There is no problem if text files are searched. Please advise.

I am not searching in open files. I am searching the folder of pdf files.

Add_ It is a domain pc. Is it possible that it could be some policy.

Answer:windows search not able to search content of pdf when search more

Hello, I'm not absolutely sure which you mean. However- I think you need the solution shown at the end of this post.

1. I think you mean if the text in the pdf file contains 4578, then that text can be found, but 45783 cannot?
And when you do this, is your search string 4 or 5 characters?

2. How are you searching - are you using search in file explorer, or the Cortana search field?

Please note your post (and the other one) are marked as 'Solved' for some reason.

My initial observation (noting the ifilter in the screenshot below):
Using file explorer search on a text-based pdf I would agree that numeric strings do not seem to be found as you'd expect. For example, of the string 765 which I added to a file, and which was indexed, 76 was found, but not 765. (I also added 7654 and 76543).

However, when I converted that pdf to txt, the strings were found correctly.

Similarly, text (which could be found in the file when open in an editor) was not found correctly by Windows search. E.g. Amb was found, but not Ambassador, whereas a windows search of the txt file worked.

How I fixed this:
I downloaded a pdf ifilter:
Adobe - Acrobat : For Windows : PDF iFilter 64 11.0.01
and installed it

In the Technical Preview for phones, does the search function search items other than web for notes from OneNote, messages, settings, contacts, etc.?
Also, when the search button is pressed, does the keyboard pops up by itself to be ready for input, or it only pops up when the text field is tapped?

Answer:Does Windows 10 for phones search apps, notes, settings as well?

No. There is a file search but it's not content based and hard to get into.
Keyboard appears when field clicked which is good.

When I press the Windows key and type "update", "Windows update" isn't returned in the results list.
It was working a few days ago.
I might have tweaked indexing options (but the indexer is still active) but there is no button to return this to default (it may not be related though).
I have rebuilt the index just to be sure.

Any suggestions?

I recently bought a new Dell Studio 1558 notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium and transferred across several hundred documents from my old PC into the new 'My Documents' folder.

As many others have found, Windows Search has been completely useless. It seems to have no problem finding files in the Music or Pictures folder, yet anything in the Documents library is invisible to it - even if I search within a small subfolder for a filename I can see right in front of me, Windows Search will announce that 'No items match your search'.
I've taken a number of steps so far to correct the problem, none of which have worked:

1. I've checked which locations are indexed for searching and ensured that the documents library is amongst them (along with the whole of my C drive).

2. I've checked that the relevant file extensions (.doc .docx .pdf etc.) are all selected in the list of 'File Types' within the Indexing options (although I notice that 'Filter Description' for .pdf reads 'Registered IFilert is not found' - no such problem with the Word docs).

3. I've deleted and rebuilt the search index.

4. I've run the Windows 7 Search troubleshooter, which reports that it can't find any problems.

5. I've read that some problems with Windows 7 Search can be fixed by editing a registry key (http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-fix-windows-7-search-problems/) but when I navigate to the relevant folder in my reg... Read more

Suddenly all my windows 7 search results fail to show the TYPE field, and now they all show a useless RATING field.

I want the ability to sort search results by type, especially since Windows insists on returning results that do not contain the search term in any way, shape, or form, in file contents or otherwise.

Any tips appreciated...

Answer:Windows 7 Search Results Display; Undocumented Change?

Hi

A quick one to try is right click in the folder thats showing the unwelcome field and choose Properties > Search tab and Restore Defaults and then reboot and check?
Another thing to try is to right click the Field list on RATING and then you should be given a list of options, untick RATING and choose TYPE, see if that works.

remembering this from memory as running Win10 now and Win7 PC I do have is in pieces at present.

Another reason why I will NOT buy or use Windows 10 S !!
I am NOT just annoyed. I am pissed off at Microsoft's strong arm tactic throughout the Windows 10 development stage.
I had enough !!!
Source : https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017...-bing-default/
Windows 10 S, Microsoft's new locked-down operating system that comes bundled with the Surface Laptop, won't allow you to change the default Web browser away from Microsoft's own Edge. Furthermore, Edge's default search provider can't be altered: Bing is all you get.
Curiously you can download other browsers from the Windows Store, such as Opera Mini, but Windows 10 S won't let you set it as the default browser: if you try to open an HTML file, or click a link in another app, it will always open in Edge, according to Microsoft's official FAQ on the topic.

Answer:Windows 10 S won't let you change default Web browser or search provider

As I understand it, Windows 10 S isn't for the general public. So just get a regular (and cheaper) laptop with the full Windows 10 (instead of being pissed off which is kind of counterproductive and bad for your health! )

Is there a easier way to get find results?

Answer:Windows Search in File Explorer brings results, if I stop Windows Search service

Now with Windows 10 Windows Search works for me.
The specialty on my configuration was and is,
that data like documents and pictures are located
on the conventional hard drive. Other files are on SSD.
It was necessary to release the folders normally used from ?quick access? in file explorer and to add the really used data folders.
To have also the common access to the data folders I created  junctions with
e.g.
cd /D C:\Users\mine
mklink  /J  Pictures  H:\Users\mine\Pictures
But normally, now I use the items of the newly configured ?quick access? in file explorer.

Windows Phone 8.1 Bing Image Search Broken by not correctly displaying larger image of thumbnails of any images not in the first group of searched images.
So if you search balloons in Windows Phone you find images of balloons, and in the first group if you click any thumbnail of an image the larger image of that thumbnail shows correctly.
But if you go to the second group of images, under the other suggested search topics links seen at the bottom of the first group of images all the thumbnails are there displayed of the second group of images, but if you click one it incorrectly displays the corresponding image from the next group of images down as the larger thumbnail.
Meaning if in the upper left of the 2nd group of images I pick the very first thumbnail image and click it, instead of showing the larger image I expect [like it does with the first group of searched images] it shows the larger images of another thumbnail, it shows the first image in the upper left of the third group of images as the larger thumbnail.
So its off... The images are not properly synchronized. Only in the first group of searched images are the thumbnail and the larger images synchronized. The only way to find the larger image is to select the last thumbnail image in the first group, and when it displays start to scroll through all the images full size one at a time. That really sucks! This just broke the day after Robin Williams dies. Prior to that it worked perfectly for all thumbnails.

I had a probem with my Toshiba Satellite from 2002 with the Windows XP Search Companion Search Result Window (the one with the animated dog in the corner) popping up randomly, causing screen to flicker, when you tried to closed it just kept opening more and more of the same window. Would not let you access it or anything. I had my OS reinstalled Dec 2008 and it worked fine until now, then just started up again. This laptop is used by my Mom just to play the card games it comes with from Win XP, not internet access, no flash drive useage etc. So virus, malware etc could not be the problem. This time I decided to reinstall the recovery disks (3) myself. First I removed and reinstalled the ram memory card and the harddrive. I also lifted the front of the laptop 2" and let drop to the desk (in case a key was stuck) Then did Toshiba reinstall, so harddrive was reformatted etc., BUT, the little dog just persisted in appearing over & over. I went on line and found a few suggestions. I followed this persons suggestion: http://www.peeniewallie.com/2006/01/disable_search.html
and disabled search companion, there are other areas in the registry to disable also, but I went with this way.
Whatever was causing this problem is now corrected. I figured that if you disable the window using search companion with the little dog the problem could not occur. You can still use search though. I read somewhere on the internet that the little animated dog can become corrupt... Read more

PROBLEM: Whenever I do a search for something from the start menu what I want does not show up. When I click see more results on the start menu search box it opens a new Window, remembers my search term and searches in the favorites folder. ALWAYS. Needless to say what I am looking for does not show in results when windows searches in favorites.

So I click on Drive C icon and it goes to drive C but clears my search term from the search box in that nbewly opened window. After I type my search again into the search box in the previously mentioned newly opened window, THEN the computer will finally find what I am looking for.

QUESTION: When I do a search from the start menu and click see more results to open the new window, how can I make the computer to search in the C drive instead of favorites?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
This is like trying to compare chalk and cheese!
Instant Search helps you to quickly find items in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. The Instant Search pane is always available in all of your Outlook views, such as Mail, Calendar, and Contacts.
The Windows 7 search facility will search everything on your computer depending on the parameters you set in the indexing system.

I have a file, "07-Vendesi saggezza.mp3" which can be found in quite a few directories across the drives on my system.

Can anyone suggest how to speed up my windows search results?

When I click on the start button the initial results appear as fast as I can type. But this only applies to Settings and Programs. It is currently taking over 10 seconds for the first file name to appear!

Worse, nothing is cached - so if I want to do another, similar search a few seconds later, it STILL takes 10 seconds before the first filename appears.

Background
- Most of my documents live in a directory in the root directory called "docs" (e.g. 3.5GB)
- I have 98GB of free space on my hard drive (SSD)
- I have c. 11GB of Outlook emails as .PST files (Outlook 2013)
- I have c. 5GB of emails in an .OST file.
- I have some about 5GB of files in DropBox too.

- My system: Motherboard: Intel DP55WB (MA TX)
Processor: Intel Core I5 750 2.66GHz
RAM: 8GB = (2GB 1066 DDR3 Memory) x4 modules
Hard disk: SSD 300GB, "INTEL SSDSA2CW300G3 ATA Device"
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 5770 - S/n: 7 78656 05291 8
Operating system: Windows7 Pro 64Bit

I rebuilt the Window's search index a few weeks ago but it didn't help speed things up.
In desperation I sometimes still use the desktop search called "Everything" (from VoidTools) ("Version 1.3.4.686 (x64)") which is extremely fast and light on resources and only searches file names. However it appears the author has given up developing it at it keeps crashing.

I will only buy one, if I have no choice, but I do not feel that I should have to in order to replace something that came with Windows 7 and should have worked in the first place.

Everything is not anything close to the search interface that was in Windows XP.

I tried Google. All of the answers are at least three years old and the same ones repeatedly. That is when they actually address the problem or even admit the search in Windows 7 is broken.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Besides converting to Linux-Unix.

I created some Search Connectors for Windows 7. The pack contains 12 connectors, favorites being:
WinVistaClub
MSDN
Microsoft Support
Wikipedia
You can install connectors by simply double clicking on the *.osdx file.
Screen shots: Download Full article: How to & some links to Windows 7 theme packs.
PS: I'd like to thank HappyAndyK for trying out some of the connectors for me.

Answer:Download Search Connectors for Windows 7 Federated Search

Thanks iMav.
In Windows 7 searching for content, directly from the explorer.exe, on remote locations, has been enabled. Integrating such federated search into Windows gives users the benefits of using familiar tools and workflows to search even remote data.
You may also downlaod & try out the Search Connector for WinVistaClub from HERE. Extract the content and click on the .osdx file to add it. Its worth a check out

What I'd like to find is a way to have a searchbox on the Taskbar that launches Windows Search, not the new Windows search. I'm pretty sure it's just a different GUID or namespace. This will do for now though.

From the SevenForums (SF) Tutorial section
Search Shortcut - Create - Windows 7 Help Forums

Download ZipSearch.zip

The compressed folder, ZipSearch.zip, contains three shortcutsSearch.lnkSearch [GUID].lnkSF Search Shortcut - Create tutorial.url

Open the compressed folder and extract one or the other Search shortcuts to your desktop. If you want the SF tutorial for reference - extract that too.
Both search shortcuts do the same thing; open an Explorer Search window. The difference is the target of the shortcut (how the Explorer search window is opened)

Search.lnk target:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe search-ms:
Search [GUID].lnk target:
%windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{9343812e-1c37-4a49-a12e-4b2d810d956b}
Right click the Search shortcut you extracted, select Properties, select the General tab, then press the [Unblock] button at the bottom right if it is present.

Right click the Search shortcut you extracted, select Pin to taskbar
-> You could also Pin to Start The tile has not shown up on the Start Screen, so maybe you can only pin it to the Start menu

As Shawn is wont to say: That's it

Answer:Taskbar Search: Launch Windows Explorer Search

I'm feeling a little silly here, the easy way to control the scope of a search is to launch Explorer, navigate to the location you want to search and get a full list using the kind: tag in the search box.

Sort by the view and columns you prefer (I like Details sorted by Date Modified)

You can then save the search (pick a meaningful name, SearchProfile or SerachThisPC for example) which creates a shortcut in your links folder.

There's a trick to get this pinned though. I'll revisit SevenForums because I know Brink has a tut on this - I helped another member do some gymnastics with the taskbar once - that member came up with a third way of pinning to the taskbar (special jumplist req I think)

Three searches should suffice for most members (ThisPC, Profile, and Programs/Apps - the last one will take some work to get the search criteria correct). You can create as many of these as you want (kind:=Document; kind:=Music; kind:=Picture; kind:=Video; kind:=E-mail; see more kind:= filters in the search box)

hi. i am trying to search for files on my computer but the SEARCH option
with the little dog gives me no options... but to stare at the dog...
this is a common problem and it was supposedly solved...

the guy who fixed his problem said....

i've tried everything the. When i click search in any explorer window the blue pane opens with the assistant but i have no search options or input boxes any ideas?

THEN he said...

actually i fixed it last light i ended up replacing the search user interface dll in safe mode and rebooting but thanxs anyways

- the problem is i have no idea how i would do this.. i can get in safe mode.. but from there some visual instructions would be nice.. thanks to anyone who can help me solve this...

Answer:windows xp search problem... i can only see the dog.. no search bars or options

Hello vileclown

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder.
Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install.
You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder.

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders.
Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View
Check ?Show hidden Files?
Uncheck ?Hide protected system files?
Apply

You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

When I search for something and swipe to images, sometimes it would be helpful to click the link at the bottom of the image to get to the source page. However mobile IE always takes me directly to the image itself and I can't get to the source page/article etc.
Does this happen for everyone else? It shows the correct link with the IE icon but clicking directly on it reacts as of I clicked the image.
How do I get to the source without having to conduct another search based on what's I'm the image?

Answer:Image search through mobile IE

tbh I never noticed this :/ However I did find a solution.. If you set google as you default search engine this problem is solved..
It only happens with Bing

While cleaning my contacts list on phone, I came across a number stored as Google Search. How could I forget this? I was using this way back to get definitions and meanings of things I wanted. All I had to do is to enter keywords and send them as a text to Google. The search giant would scan its database and send me one or more texts that would basically define or explain the keywords I send.
For example, I typed "what is microsoft" and send it to Google. It will check out websites like dictionary dot com, wikipedia dot org and certain other sites that deal with definitions and send you the closest result it thinks would help me. Unlike the mobile search or the web search, it will not return a list of links to allow me and choose the one I wanted. It chooses the one it thinks is helpful. Most of the times, it is indeed helpful. The results are satisfactory if you are looking for meanings and definitions of any word or phrase.
Saves time. You do not have to fire up your computer or browser. You need not connect to mobile internet. Simply type the keyword and send it to the predesignated phone number. For Asia-Pacific, it is 9773300000. I do not know for sure if the same number works for other areas of the planet. Standard messaging rates apply for the outgoing text that you send. No charges for the text message that is sent by Google explaining the keywords.
Nice, isn't it? Give it a try and let me know if it works for you too.

I have three drives in my PC and one of them can't be searched against. No results is always returned. It works on the other drives just fine.
C:\ = Windows 7 OS
B:\ = Data drive
F:\ = Old data drive

Nothing in B:\ comes up in search results. It has never been searchable since I built the machine a few weeks back. Worked fine before pulling out of my old PC. I've verified the SYSTEM account has full access. Changing ownership, reinstalling Windows Search, adding and removing B:\ from index, and reindexed several times. Lots of restarts and restarting the indexing service. Out of ideas short of a format. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Edit: Should also add that Windows Search works if I disable indexing.

Edit 2: The fix turned out to be the drive letter. Changing it from B: to W: followed by reindexing fixed the problem.

Answer:Windows Search can't search data drive

Type in "Indexing" into Start\Search and click on Indexing Options. Click Modify, then put a check box next to B:\ then hit OK and Close.

If I click "search" in the start up window I get "windows search". A choice here is to select "search companion". This is the search tool I really want -- not "windows search". I don't want to always have to go through "windows search" to get to it.

I consulted "help" and it says that if I'm in "windows search" I should change my preferences. I've tried and tried and can't find any "change preferences" choice in windows search.

Can you help, please.

Here is my problem with Windows Desktop Search: I have searched their help the Windows Help and Support pages, but I have not found how to search in filenames only? Every time I do a search it finds ALL FILES CONTAINING THE SEARCH CRITERIA, either in the name or contents! I only want to see those files listed that have the words I am searching for in the filename itself and NOT thos files with it in its contents.

Someone please explain what I am overlooking to this simple request.

Thanks in advance.

BTW, I'm a new forum member and I don't have displayed yet in my signature what machine or OS I'm using. So here it is:
Dell Dimension DXP051, Intel Pentium D CPU 3.00GHz 2.99 GHz, 2.00 GB Ram; Windows XP Home Ver. 2002, SP3

Answer:Windows Desktop Search: How to search for filenames only?

Hi, I don't know if I read your post right but have you tried typing your request in the 'all or part of the file name' box as that in theory should only display file names containing the criteria you selected? If that doesn't work you could adjust the search settings to look only in a specific place, date when file was created/modified. Apart from that there are free programs that function as Windows Vista instant search feature. I would suggest looking at CNET.com under downloads section as I don't know the name of the program off the top of my head. Hope that helps.

I type a word into the SEARCH box of a folder. I hit ENTER. Windows runs a search for a different word that I previously used as a search term, usually in an entirely different folder.

Why?

Is there a way to force Windows to search for the terms that I entered before hitting ENTER?

p.s. I suspect it's somehow Google's fault for teaching hundreds of thousands of people to write software this way. "Sorry, we weren't able to accept your keyboard input because our predictive software was using 99% of your CPU to make unrealistic assumptions about what you might have wanted... please begin typing again so we can resume ignoring your input while guessing at what you are trying to type"

Answer:Windows 7 folder search changes my search terms

That doesn't happen in my Win 7 but I don't hit ENTER either. As I type my search word the list of hits just keeps updating automatically. If you can't get it to behave you could try searching with Everything instead.

I have a Dell mini laptop running Windows XP, and I am just wondering how to make the search interface the same as my main computer. When I go to Start --> Search --> For Files or Folders... I get this:

This is new to me, I have never seen this before. It never works, never finds anything, claims Windows search is not running. I downloaded TweakUI and used it to enable the classic search from Windows 2000. That didn't work. Well, after messing around, I found that if I click "Click here to use Search Companion" the classic search I want pops up in a new window and get this... it actually works!

Is there a way to make the search feature by default use what is seen in the second screenshot? I am confused, I don't understand this non-functional bloated "Windows Search" thing, when all I want is "normal" classic search. Any idea on how I can achieve that?

This has been driving me crazy, I don't want to have to click on "Use Search Companion" every single time I want to do a real file search. How do I get rid of this horrible "Windows Search"?

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows Search VS Normal Search

I hate that thing too. It's an update from Windows Update called "Windows Search" and it's a piece of designed to get you ready for the even bigger piece of search they have in both Vista and Win7.

You uninstall it in Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.

Then go manually to Windows Update and prevent it from installing again.

I have just updated my Lumia 1520 to Cyan and will now no longer allow me to automatically load desktop sites, I hate the mobile sites and isn't always practical for me. I have changed my browser settings to 'desktop' but still automatically loads mobile. Any way to stop this happening?

Answer:Why aren't mobile site loading as desktop even after I change my browser settings?

Wait minute, Cyan? OO You're damn late to the game. Anyways, this is due to some changes on the User Agent String Microsoft introduced with ehm.. either WP 8.1 or WP 8.1 update 1. Not too sure anymore. Cyan was a firmware update, so it can't be related to that. Or at least it shouldn't. :) I was experiencing the same back then, but one of the later PfD updates fixed it, so I assume once you installed Denim, you should be fine.

Nothing seems to get rid of the message and it happens continually.
Can anyone tell me what is going on and how to get rid of this?
I have run my virus protection program several times and get no hits, so I assume this is legit.
Thanks in advance.
