Upgrading One M8 for Windows from 8.1 Update 2 to W10M Insider Preview?

Question: Upgrading One M8 for Windows from 8.1 Update 2 to W10M Insider Preview?

Hello, I've been trying for hours to get my HTC One M8 to run the Windows 10 preview, but I'm having some issues.
- As most people have suggested, I've hard reset my phone, not used a backup, then installed the insider preview and signed up for fast ring (I hear the newest build is great).
- Once I've done this and the phone has restarted and everything, I go to check for updates and.... nothing. Says my device is up to date.
- Tried resetting (twice), using the WP recovery tool, and still no updates come around.
Any suggestions? Could this have anything to do with my carrier (Verizon)? Am I out of luck? Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Upgrading One M8 for Windows from 8.1 Update 2 to W10M Insider Preview?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Upgrading One M8 for Windows from 8.1 Update 2 to W10M Insider Preview?

I have an HTC One M8 running 10586.218 that my son is using (left IOS and likes W10M) and it runs very good on that phone.
You will not get an upgrade using the fast ring on the HTC, that is just for "supported" devices. You can get the very good 10586.218 release using "Insider Release" not "slow" or "fast" though. Not sure if "production" ring will get you anything either.

Hi!
I want to know what type of data I lose during upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Insider Preview.
Will I have to reinstall all my software?
Thanks
Jakub

Answer:What I lose upgrading Windows 8.1 to 10 Insider Preview?

You are not losing any data if you upgrade from 8.1 to Windows 10.
Actually I'd upgrade to the current RTM build 10240 and not to an Insider build, because it'll get auto activated and you're not sharing your whole life with Microsoft.

I keep getting pop ups saying my copy of windows is about to expire. "12/31/2016 4:29:44 PM"
I have: Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview Evaluation copy. Build 14295.rs1_release 160318-1628
Every time I try and use Windows Update, I keep having the following errors...
0x80240fff
0x80070017

No mater what I do I can not get the updates to install, in fact windows wont even let me go back to an earlier build.
Really don't want to lose all my settings, apps games, I've backed up what I can but really dreading all the customization and settings I had to tweak.

Anyway to stop the expiration? fix the updates so it works or download and install offline so i can keep all my settings and stuff?

Also tried WindowsUpdateDiagnostic and wushowhide. both didn't do anything for me. tried clearing the "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" and that didn't work.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Hello all,

Real quick, I'm having an issue where I try to update from Build 15031.rs2_release.170204-1546 to the next rs2_release available via Windows Update. The update downloads, does the pre-install, boots me into the traditional blue screen of updating, finishes, then reboots me to get back into the OS. At this juncture, I am at a blue flag and white dot circle, which has stopped spinning (it spins for approx .75 seconds) and halts, machine stays in this state ad infinitum. I can reboot it, at which point it goes back to the same state. If i shut down, then power back up instead (cold boot), the machine reverts the upgrade and goes back to the previous build and everything is honkey dorey.

Thing 1) I do not have a wireless USB mouse/dongle. Please don't recommend I remove it as one does not exist.
Thing 2) I have removed two possible culprits (Creative SoundBlaster Z card, Asus Wireless-N card). No change.
Thing 3) I have unplugged all video (except 1 Display Port), all USB connections, and the Ethernet cable. No change.
Thing 4) I even went so far as to disconnect my NZXT water cooler USB connector from the motherboard header and reboot. No change.

Most posts I see, it's a "Oh, your wireless usb mouse is causing issues" or, "the PC is having issues discovering USB devices during it's boot process, disconnect them". Well, I've done it, and it's still busted. This has happened with /every/ developer preview update since Win 10 was release. The first... Read more

I read through this and don't see anything I can help with except for what could be called a stupid question: Could it be your computer is too good for the IP versions? I pose that only because I have IP on a Dell 530 SFF computer and a Dell Optiplex 755 computer from back in Vista and Win7 days and working fine. I did have to use an Add-in Video card in both as the onboard graphics adapter had no drivers for Win10.

Whilst attempting to update from build 16176 to 16179 it fails with error Windows 10 Insider Preview 16179.1000 (rs_prerelease) - Error 0x80070005

Finds this update and downloads a KB then starts to install 16179 but quickly stops with this error. I've tried stopping all non MS services and startup programs and rebooting but it still fails. I've also followed numerous different suggestions which got extremely complicated but had no effect.

DISM restorehealth can't find the files and I don't have an ESD/ISO for build 16176

I tried to reset my windows but it only offers a total reinstall losing my software and settings which will be a PIA to rebuild.

I could wait for the next insider release and see if MS have fixed it or is it a problem on my particular PC?

source: Insider Preview Update KB4046355 Silently Uninstalls Windows Media Player

After Windows Insiders installed update KB4046355 for the Insider Build 16299.15, they discovered that Windows Media Player had been silently removed from the computer. As Build 16299 is the Fall Creators Update that is scheduled to come out this month, it is unknown whether the removal of Windows Media Player is intentional as part of this large update or a bug.

Hello everyone,
I've already upgraded to Windows 10 (from W7) around August 18th, and still didn't get the Fall Update.
That was fine, I tried using Media Creation Tool and installing the upgrade manually. After "Copying files" was done, at about 30%, right before starting to install drivers and features, it will stop installing and "restore to previous version of Windows", which is Windows 10.
I decided two days ago to join The Insider program on my laptop too, and after couple hours, I was able to download the latest build of Windows 10.
Again, same problem, it wouldn't install drivers and features, and restores the previous version of Windows.
I read somewhere that turning Wifi OFF might solve it but no solution.
Any suggestions?

When I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 Pro my Win 10 was activated. I decided to stay on the Insider Preview and today was upgraded to version 10525. After the upgrade, I noticed the Windows Watermark showing this as an Evaluation Copy and no longer have activated copy, but a Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview Copy. Does anyone know why I went through the update farce if you lose it by staying in the Insider Preview.

My bad. Just rechecked and does show it's activated.

I have heard that the roll back works good if you want to go back to the rtm. I have not done that yet but am thinking on trying soon. I do have a test machine ready. The good thing seems to be that the activation goes forward and back also. Good luck to you

Hi

Just my opinion on 10074 test preview, but most of the modern apps are so buggy you can do very little with them. For example I had to open Firefox to make this post as spartan just kept refreshing every time I tried to make this post.

Music app is quirky to say the least, sometimes coming up with cant find this song or cant access it. Yet all my music is in the cloud and a copy on hard disk with the music app pointing to the folder.

Insider hub wont log in just sits at the opening screen then says check your internet connection.

Outlook seems to work ok but doesnt pick up all your account from one preview to another which saves a lot of setting up as the previous mail app did.

Those are just the apps I tested and at least feedback now works as with other builds it was intermittent.

MS say that Windows 10 is nearly ready for release, I hope not as there is a lot of re-coding to be done with just the few bugs I have found. No wonder Windows 8 still has bugs!

However I still did not get any update.
So I downloaded the official ISO of the 931 version expecting that after installing it I could get the download for the 965. That was yesterday and still nothing.
I was reading old posts for previous versions, tried a couple of things, but did not succeed.
Is there any new way to force this update?

If you have no eligible system for a free upgrade (and Vista is not eligible), then you will have to buy a Windows 10 license. The insider preview versions will eventually expire and will be useless plus they are not eligible for a free upgrade.

If you would like to test the "Core" version...

Replace the pid.txt with an ei.cfg file. You can then select Home edition at setup - during setup it will prompt for a key but you have the option to skip, it will activate automatically with this key after completion: BD8NM-JGY2P-8JJYD-WTYKR-HQRJM.

Hi Guys and Gals

My computer installed this update (Windows 10 Insider Preview 14965) back around the middle of November and I have noticed two things. First -- Microsoft Edge took it upon itself to reinstate itself as my "Default Browser" and secondly now I keep having issues when navigating the internet. Basically I will click a link and the browser will pretend like it's going to go but then tell me it can't find the page so I just hit refresh and ta-da the page is there. It happens on any website (whether Amazon, Google, Microsoft, etc) and in Edge, Chrome and IE.

Anyone else having this type of issue? I also play games that rely on the internet and I haven't had any issues when them nor do I have any issues pinging websites even when I let ping run for 20 to 30 minutes while I'm browsing the web and experience the issue. I'm tempted to uninstall the update but if others updated and aren't seeing the issue then I may just have a weird DNS issue going on.

Thoughts?

Hello guys, I am a new member to these forums; however, I have been lurking through and reading posts here for a little while. I have a situation here I can not seem to solve that has me pulling my hair out. The first thing I want to say starting is that I am not a professional by any means I only really know so much I am still in the process of learning myself I guess I would say. With that said I know more than anyone else in my family and friends and generally end up being the one fixing everyone's computer. Which is fine because generally I have never had a problem, and is usually a easy fix. My younger cousin asked me for help with his new computer recently which was not working right and I figured hey no problem I am sure I can get it running again pretty easily. Unfortunately this has been anything but easy. At first when he brought it to me it was running Windows 8.1 and appeared to be experiences a problem called a Windows temporary user profile where all of his stuff was not available, as a matter of face nothing was available. Except the recycle bin, the loading symbol on the mouse was constantly running, the cpu was constantly running high, and it was incapable of running any program. After a while of running around in circles trying to fix a problem I didn't understand fully, I learned that this problem happened after he had upgraded to windows 10 on the laptop recently. He told me that he had used a Windows 10 Pro key to upgrade and that after that he began hav... Read more

Answer:Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview problem?

I'm not sure I understand the problem as you describe it TCB. I am going to print the post and try to separate it into paragraphs so that, hopefully, I'll understand a bit better. A great big hint: When we see a large chunk of text like this, it's rather confusing, to say the least. Paragraphs help a lot.

First, a few questions:

Did the computer come with Windows 8.0 or Windows 8.1? Is it Windows Core (Home) or Pro? Does your cousin want to install the free version of Windows 10 or did he buy a Retail copy of Windows 10? These are questions that need to be answered before we can give you a good answer.

Yeah, this is the Windows Insider Forum, but we're easy. It seems "Insider" stuff is mixed in anyway. I'll be back in a few to see if I can help you out.

I understand that Microsoft is gradually rolling out Windows 10 but I thought that Insiders got it straight away on the 29th. Is anyone else experiencing this issue or does anybody have a fix for me (some other method of downloading and installing it?). Thanks.

Hi Everyone! I have upgraded my Lumia 535 to Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview three days ago. It is running very well except few minor issues. Would I get the Windows 10 Mibile complete version in the same way or there will be an other procedure? Have nice days and nights..

Answer:Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview

You'll be fine doing nothing for the time being.
You may want to get off the Insider when 10 goes gold though. Insider will continue to have improvements, but you may want to switch to the public or the slow ring.

I registered for windows insider preview but I never installed the preview builds. My pc is now running with windows 10 installed. I'm just curious if my PC has the build for insiders. I'm a little bit worried about my PC sending telemetry data to Microsoft.

Answer:How do I know if my PC is enrolled in Windows Insider Preview?

When you download Insider Preview, you will agree that microsoft can take some data on your pc. this is because insider preview is for beta testing. They need to fix glitches or something like that. They won't use it for bad things..
To check if you are in insider preview,
Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced Settings.

I joined the Insider Preview for PC today and I jump directly to the preview build 14332. Is there a chance I can get build 14328? The first reason I joined the program is to experience the build 14328 because new features introduced looks promising to me. I hope there is a way. Thanks!

Answer:Can I still get Windows 10 Insider Preview 14328?

Nope, there isn't a way to go back to a previous build. Sorry.

I have Windows 10 Insider Preview installed and activated on a (Vista) laptop. But the laptop is becoming unstable and I found an identical replacement. I tried installing the Insider Preview from scratch again but this time it does not activate.

I am not too surprised. But I see that the Insider Preview program is still ongoing. Is it possible to sign up with a new account and obtain a new activation? Or is it that only people who installed Insider Preview before 7/29 gets free activation?

Answer:Windows 10 Insider Preview - is it too late to register?

You don't get free activation for being a insider. if you had a active 7 or 8 license you got pro depending on when you joined, but you still need to purchase a license if you installed it on clean or on a system that didn't have 7 or 8 installed.

If you are set to receive Insider builds in the fast ring, then you could just check for updates in Windows Update to install the latest build without losing anything.

Yesterday, we began an exciting new chapter in the Windows story with the announcement of Windows 10 and what it means for our enterprise customers. As part of our new approach to building and delivering Windows 10 to customers, we want to make sure we get feedback in real-time as the development process is ongoing. We?re kicking this off today with the launch of the Windows Insider Program. If you?re comfortable with using pre-release software, you can join the Windows Insider Program today to download the Windows 10 Technical Preview and try out features like the new Start menu, multiple desktops, snap enhancements, and others.

As a member of the Windows Insider community, you will have an active role in helping us build Windows 10 and be among the first to see new stuff. You will automatically receive new builds as we release them with the latest features we?re experimenting with ? and our freshest bugs. Some of these features may not be fully ?baked? ? meaning they may not work correctly as you are seeing these features as we work on them. And there?s no guarantee that what you see will be part of the final release. But as a Windows Insider, you?ll have the ability to impact and influence those types of product decisions. You will be able to use the Windows Feedback app to report on any issues you encounter with the Windows 10 Technical Preview or tell us about something you like or dislike. And you will be able to ask questions and talk with us and other Insiders thro... Read more

Interesting build, it's got the most new features of any build to date in the Creators Update path and probably close to feature complete. The big thing that most around here will probably be the new options to delay updater and turn off driver updates. But only fa the Pro, Education and Enterprise versions do I'm sure that will receive a lot of complaints. However if one is on the Pro version, these options should take care of the majority of the complaints I've noticed. No turning off updates permanently, but a 35 day delay provides a good amount of time to address bad updates and get fixes out before the next 35 days.

As for the other big issue beyond updating, I've not seen anything on telemetry changes. Insider Builds don't allow any of that to be changed so there'd be little to see there if it did but no mention in the release notes anyway. The biggest thing I like, the Start Menu finally has the foldering system that Windows Phone 8.1 had years ago. I know there are the tile haters but you can put an LOT of tiles in a compact space now and they expand out when the group is clicked. No way to nest the folders though.

So nothing here that would probably change too many minds about 10 though the updating changes for Pro and above will probably make some happier.

Hi everyone, we?re hard at work on the next builds that we?ll send out to you for PC and Mobile. I don?t have an update on timing for that quite yet, but I do have some important changes to tell you about that are coming with the next PC build as we get ready for July 29th.

Microsoft Account notifications

If you don?t have your Microsoft Account (MSA) connected to your PC, starting in the next build you?ll start seeing notifications asking you to do so. You?ll need to connect the MSA that you registered for the Windows Insider Program with (and accepted the ?Microsoft Windows Insider Program Agreement?) in order to continue receiving new Windows 10 Insider Preview builds (both Fast and Slow rings) from Windows Update. If you already have your MSA connected to your account on your PC, then you?re all set. We?re introducing new infrastructure in Windows Update to help us deliver new builds more effectively to Windows Insiders, and ensure that we?re flighting builds to people who have registered and opted in to the program. Connecting your MSA also allows seamless access to Windows Insider-only functionality in the Windows Feedback app and Insider Hub too.

This change is for the Windows Insider Program ONLY, and is specific to how we?re delivering the Insider Preview builds. Once available on July 29th, you do not need an MSA to upgrade Windows 10 on your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1... Read more

With a nod and a wink, Microsoft gives away Windows 10 to anyone who asks

In the always confusing world of Microsoft licensing, there are two sets of rules.

One is written down in license agreements, drafted by Microsoft's large legal team, with separate terms for PC makers and end users. These combined terms are extremely specific about the rights and responsibilities of every party to the license agreement. They are aimed primarily at Microsoft's commercial customers and its PC-building partners, who account for more than 98 percent of all revenue from Windows desktop licenses.

The other set of rules is unwritten, for the most part. But its terms are fairly easy to deduce. They are intended for hobbyists, enthusiasts, and IT pros who like to tinker with Windows and PC hardware. Microsoft's TechNet program was a long-running gift to this group, offering thousands of dollars' worth of Microsoft software for a few hundred bucks.

The Windows Insider program is being run in that same spirit.

hey guys just have a small question, if I register for windows insider now and try to install windows 10 on a pc, what version do I actually ? Is it the old build 10130 (and go through series of updates for new builds) or directly the new ones like build 10159.....

Answer:About installing Windows 10 via insider preview, what version do I actually get?

10030 is the most recent build for the slow ring, so that is what you will get if you upgrade now from 8.1. You can then switch to the fast ring and get the newer build.

Hello.

Today when I turned on my computer I found out that language bar is missing. I managed to restore it, but it's not stylized as the other taskbar icons (network, sound, notifications) and it isn't visible, cause letters are black and it can be seen only if I set taskbar color to something brighter (orange, red or something like that).

Is there any solution to bring back the old language bar?

Hi Guys!
Only a few days ago a Windows Insider Build had been pushed outside the walls of Redmond. This build is marked as 10525 and does not include that many features. As to say in fact that Windows 10 for Xbox One is coming really soon so prepare your selves for the update! If that anybody on the forum has an Xbox One then the update will apply to them. But for now enjoy the update as I think there will be another one very soon, plus that watermark has returned!

Answer:Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10525.

Despite this build doesn't include many new features, (actually the only additions are the improved memory manager and colored window title bars), it feels very rock solid, good for daily use.

Hi! I have an aspire desktop, SNID:2666778330So basically the problem is, the text in my bios looks like an atari 800, see attached image, and the operating system looked like it was squished into the side of the screen and pixelized until I installed the graphics driver. the BIOS is still un-legible, though, and I tried reinstalling the BIOS from Acer's support website, and I reinstalled the chipset driver, and I reinstalled the AMT driver. the main problem now is the BIOS. also noticing a noticeable drop in performance. I have also reinstalled windows twice.

I've created a 2nd Windows 10 Pro build from a Macrium image to receive Insider Preview Builds on a separate HD to my main operating system.

My Windows 10 Pro on SSD didn't use to require me to sign in as I've unchecked to 'tick box' below:

My 2nd HD has successfully upgraded to build 10532 but now when the PC boots up whether on SSD (Windows 10 Pro) or HD (Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview build 10532) it prompts me to say that the user name or password is incorrect, then asks for a password against 1 of 2 users.

Any ideas why this is happening as I've unchecked to opt out of accessing with a password.

Hello, in April of last year I was a part of the fast ring for the Windows Insider Program and I downloaded Windows 10 on my Lumia 928. I soon found out that after I installed it that I couldn't text or make calls. I was very off put by this and decided that the Insider Program isn't for me and rolled back, but after more than a year of waiting I'm restless to finally get Windows 10 on my phone. I now currently have a Lumia 730 and am on Verizon. Is it possible to join the Slow Ring of the Insider Program to get Windows 10 on my phone, but still be able to make calls and send texts through Verizon? I'm looking for someone who has done this and can confirm or deny. Also, on an unrelated note I recently signed myself up for the Slow Ring on my PC but I haven't gotten the Redstone build yet. Do I have to wait for the next build to come out or will I be able to download the current one in a some time? Thanks, Jake

Answer:Windows Insider Preview with Verizon Lumia 730

I feel the issues you faced may have been a fluke since I know people on the Icon are enjoying 10.
Even then, I would get on the Release Preview ring, NOT slow or fast for the time being.

Hi - I have an older HP laptop ( 4 GB RAM, a 2.26 GHz 2 Core CPU, Windows 7.1 Home Premium which is up to date, the Get Windows 10 app is successfully installed). I checked with the app to ensure that my laptop could run Windows 10 (it can).

Version 10162 is the version available to download.

I first tried downloading the ISO, burned a DVD, and tried running the setup from the DVD. It would start, the blue box would appear briefly, then nothing. I tried running setup as an administrator, no luck. Couldn't get it to do anything.

I then tried the start upgrade now process on Download Windows 10 Insider Preview - Microsoft Windows
. This runs windows10insiderpreview.exe. The first thing it does when I run it is to check windows update, then it stops.

I have been unable to find anything that might help get the setup working. If anyone has any ideas I would be happy to try them.

Cheers

Answer:Windows Insider Preview (10162) will not install

It seems that sometime after I started this process this morning Microsoft posted this notice on Home page - Windows Insider Program -

"NOTE: We?re very close to the public release of Windows 10 so we?re not onboarding any new PCs to the Windows Insider Program just now. You can still onboard a supported Windows Phone and please do keep using Windows 10 on any PCs you?ve already set up and sending us great feedback!"

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14352 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring.

What?s new in Build 14352

Cortana Improvements

Cortana, Your Personal DJ: In addition to playing songs via your local files and OneDrive, you also now have the ability to play any song from the entire Groove Music Catalog using Cortana. If you have a Groove Music Pass, just ask Cortana to play your favorite artist, genre, playlist or song. This also works with Cortana on your Lock screen.

Windows Ink

Updated Sticky Notes: With the latest update, Sticky Notes are now better than ever* with the ability to create Cortana reminders from your notes that will flow with you across your Cortana enabled devices.

But after a while it returns to my Desktop even if i press force shutdown.
I'm sure i have closed any apps that may keep it awake.

I saw in the web that you need to reserve first in order to get a free copy of windows 10 that will be released somewhere in July. However, I already downloaded a Windows 10 pro insider preview.
Is my reservation already set? Since according to the site of Microsoft, you need a Windows 7 (SP1) or Windows 8.1.
Thanks in advance that will answer

Answer:Can I reserve for a free upgrade using windows 10 pro insider preview?

you don't need to reserve anything, it's primarily for preloading.
if you had a valid activated 7 or 8.1 install underneath, you'll be five.

Hi all,

Starting on Win 10 Insider preview build 14936, some web pages stopped opening. For example gmail web page, Facebook etc. It seems there is something, that prevents it to be fully downloaded and viewed.

I experience this behaviour in all standard web browsers. Firefox (49.0.2), IE 11, Chrome and also Edge.

Any suggestions will be high appreciated :-).

Thanks in advance

I have created this topic for the discussion of build 10122.

Who has upgraded to build 10122 and what are your opinions of this build? Pros or cons.

Bruce.

Answer:Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10122 Discussion

Ah we've all been waiting for another build and well its here! And yes I'm going to review this here and now so let's review it.

It's OK looks great and polished I don't mind it at all since Microsoft is finishing bits and pieces off it's shiny new OS. The start menu looks great, and the theme looks great! Microsoft also has stabilized the OS a lot since 10074 as it even fixed the annoying issue with the Nvidia Drivers. Actually a lot of you would recommend this as a stable Build or not any other way it's great.

 List of fixed issues:
1. Visual Glitch (Rectangle Silvers)

2. Fixed lots of glitches with Microsoft

3. Developers – when you go to Settings > Update & Security > For developers – it no longer crashes the Settings app.

4. We fixed the issue some people were seeing where their graphics driver fails to install from Windows Update with error code 80070103. This was happening because WU was trying to re-issue the driver.

5.You should now be able to edit the IPv4 properties of an Ethernet adapter on your PC.

6.We have fixed issues where fonts would render blurry on High DPI displays. We’re cooking up a blog post we plan to publish shortly that talks a little more in depth about our investment with High DPI in Windows 10 so watch for it.

7.We have fixed some keyboard shortcuts in Microsoft Edge. Control + L or Alt + D shortcuts now got to the URL bar more reliably.

When I try the windows "WindowsUpdate Troubleshooter" it finds database errors that it can not fix. This problem keeps going and going with out stop. Can anybody help with this? How do I fix the database issue so I can complete the updates?

I have purchased a MSI Gaming Laptop (on Jan 2016) that shipped with Windows 10 Home 64-bit (build 10240..later it got upgraded to build 10586).
Now, may I sign up for insider preview program?
If I do so, may I go back to the Windows 10 build that the laptop shipped with (either 10240 or 10586)?

Also, enlighten me more about activation of the Insider Builds that will get installed in the future..will they have an expiry period or will they get activated with the license I have now?

Answer:Insider preview on a laptop running Genuine Windows 10

RE : MSI Gaming Laptop (on Jan 2016) that shipped with Windows 10 Home 64-bit (build 10240..later it got upgraded to build 10586).

The lattest Win 10 Home or Pro version is 10586.218.
You get that from Windows Update. KB3147458.

RE : Now, may I sign up for insider preview program?

Left click Start button > left side, Settings > Update & Security > right side, click Advanced options > left side, under Get Insider preview, click the Get started button > follow the prompts.

RE : about activation of the Insider Builds that will get installed in the future..will they have an expiry period or will they get activated with the license I have now?
Assuming you do decide to switch from Windows 10 Home 10586 to Win 10 Insider Preview.
Once you have your first Insider Preview build installed via Windows Update, it will be automatically activated.
Set your update at Fast ring to receive future new builds.
All subsequent insider preview builds will be automatically activated. No "licence"/ product key is required.
Technically there is an expiry date on each Insider Preview build. But, Microsoft will release a newer build way before the expiry date. You don't have to worry about that.
