Preferred Solution: W10 1511 upgrade in ASUS T100 (32Gb) fails due to hard disk space shortage

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Anyone know how to solve the problem of "not enough hard disk space" when trying to put the Anniversary update on an Asus T100.
I have a 64Gb sdcard in as well but I assume the update must be ignoring that.
Tried clearing out as much as I could from the main ssd but still no joy.

Cheers

Answer:Anniversary update on Asus T100 not enough space

Does the Asus T100 have a recovery partition? On devices with small ssds like yours, it's possible to move the recovery partition to an external drive, then reclaim the disk space used by the recovery partition. You can also make a system image to an external drive using software like Macrium Reflect and then the recovery partition isn't needed at all.

How much space does the installer say you need to free up?

My unit is Lenevo 3000 V200My remaining free space on my hard disk is 27.4GB out of 120GBI have few files, Pictures, Music on my computer.I notice every time my computer update and back up it consume more space in my hard disk.I am worried in a few months i will have no more space in my hard disk.  What should i do?Can this be resolve? Can i upgrade my hard disk?

Answer:How to free up hard disk space? or Can i upgrade my hard disk?

The System Restore uses a lot of disk space, if it is in disk C, move it to disk D.Clean up the Temp. files and registry.Defragment your disks.Uninstall unnecessary files.Save your personal files in Disk D. Save downloaded files in Disk D.Do not or install  and uninstall the "Optional" updates. Always perform Disk Cleanup. The above will release some space in Disk C.

I have 1511 installed and hit the issue with a couple of updates not installing so I can't install the Anniversary and follow-on upgrades.
Has anyone used the Media creation tool, downloaded the Win 10 Home/Pro x64 v.1607 to a USB stick, and then performed an in-place upgrade/repair.
Was it successful?
To boot from the usb should I change the bios for usb first, or just load within win 10 , from the usb drive. When should I remove the stick?
Sorry for so many questions --- fairly new at this
Appreciate all help

Answer:Upgrade fails for win 10 1511 --- load from usb ?

Nope, neither update to AU, nor upgrade install from ISO worked for me - did a clean install of AU, installed apps and copied user files from mounted backup.

I did run WU thereafter sucessfully and drivers got installed, but since have only installed updates manually - all sucessfully. (with WU update blocked in firewall)

Hi,

my first post here since i start to be pretty desperate. My Win 10 (version 10.0 Build 10240) has downloaded and installed version 1511, 10586 now already five times. Every time it asks to reboot to finish the upgrade there pops up a window in the lower right corner that says "We couldn't finish installing updates - Select this message to learn more". When i select it, I'm taken to the Update section where it says my computer is up to date. And when i check for updates it always finds the update version 1511, 10586 again. And prepares to install, and starts to download (takes for ages), and actually installs. And then again asks to reboot. And fails.

I hope there would be some solution to this, I upgraded from Win7 and this has been working until now. I REALLY hope I don't have to go back to Win7 and lose tons of installed programs. Any help appreciated.

Answer:Fails to Upgrade to Windows 10 v.1511, 10586 (Nov.update)!

You have been using Windows Update to install 10586.

How about download Media Creation Tool or Tech Bench and do the install ?

Media Creation Tool (MCT)
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Tech Bench
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/techbench

Let's use MCT as an example.
Download the Tool and run it > you can either
1. select Upgrade this PC now which will begin installation.
or
2. select Create Installation media for another PC which will begin downloading the iso file to your computer.
After iso file is downloaded, right click at the iso file > click Mount > click Setup.exe > installation will begin.

In both methods, you can keep you settings, files and apps.
No product key is required.
Activation is automatic.

Ok, I'm pretty sure I know what's going on, but I don't know which commands to run to fix. So, Windows 10 runs into issues during the reboot portion of the upgrade. I think it's that the windows boot manager believes it's in the first partition on disk, while it's actually on the second. (I moved it to avoid Linux and Windows not playing nice on the boot partition)

I have two boot partitions MS_BOOT and BOOT. Since I moved the Windows boot manager off of BOOT(sdb1) to MS_BOOT(sdb6, was made later and moved to the second partition location in terms of locality. I tried Easybcd, but that only shows one of the boot partitions. So, I need to figure out how to list all the partitions in Windows. Disk Management doesn't show the partition names for the SSD the boot partitions and Linux are on. (only size)

The Windows boot manager has

>> device partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume1

I believe I want that to point to volume2 or 6. Not sure, which as I don't know whether the windows assigns letters to drives based on cardinality or locality.

There's two types of commands / third party programs I think I need. One for detecting partitions on all connected hard drives, and a second for changing where device points to. Anyone able to help?

Answer:Windows10 10586 / 1511 upgrade fails on boot.

The only thing I understood about your post was the title. Mine does the same, We are not alone either

I don't have any partitions, just C drive

Hi,
Basically WIndows fails to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586.
There is no error codes shown. Only a message that issues were found during installation and then advises to press fix issue which in turn jumps right back to the full download (again) and install with the same message 'issues were found, press fix issue...'
Any tip to get it installed? PC works fine otherwise.

Hi there!
First of all thanks for the great toturial and the forum.

I tried to do the in-place upgrade from Windows 10 (build 1607) in order to "repair" my system (there are some quirks I want to get rid off) using a freshly created USB (as per description), but it fails with the message "make sure that there is enough disk space available in your PC" (rough translation from german; see attached screenshot) without any further information.

It then automatically cycles back to the question on how to install (i.e. with keeping data and apps or without) and then back into the above mentioned error message.

This is what I already tried or made sure of prerequisites needed:
I have made sure that there is definitely enough disk space available. My C: partition (where windows resides on) is 106 GB large and has currently over 58 GB of free space available. The system partition that is supposed to be 350 MB is still 350 MB (I read something about this potentially being reduced to 100 MB by other tools ...).I have deinstalled the Kaspersky anti virus tool (reinstalled it now after several tries with no success).I have disabled (i.e. fully decrypted) the disk encryption bitlocker on all disks.

My partitions (as seen from "Mini Tool Partition Wizard" and "Disk Manager"):
Do you have any ideas on what else could be wrong?
What intrigues me most is the fact that there is no further information in the error message on what or where is missing... Read more

Answer:In-Place Upgrade fails with message "not enough disk space"

Hi, Mark and welcome to Ten Forums.
Have you tried to mount the ISO in File Explore, instead if using an USB stick?
I just download the current ISO here: Windows 10 ISO , mount it in File Explorer and run the setup.exe.

I am trying to perform the November update (1511) on this computer. (starting from the previous Windows 10 version)
Since I have another problem where it doesn't appear in Windows Update (despite fulfilling many requirements to make it appear), I am limited to perform the upgrade with the Media Creation Tool (which has re-implemented build 10586, 1511 into it after been pulled out)

However, the upgrade process failed when reaching 76%. After system restore and reboot, the following pop-up appeared:

Any ideas why this is happening? I upgraded this computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10 back in august, without any issue. Only now it did not find the November update through Windows Update and when using the Media Creation Tool it fails.

Answer:Windows 10 10586 (1511) upgrade fails / error 0x8007002C - 0x4000D

I had a similar problem with my system that was upgraded from W8.1 and I decided to do a clean install with the new 1511 ISO and it is a much better running system now.

I just upgraded my Win 10 machine to "Threshold-2" version 1511. All went smoothly! But it added 10GB to the hard drive storage used.

I presume this is due to the ability to "roll back" to the prior version (I have no Restore Points because that feature is disabled).

If I'm willing to commit to version 1511 and do not need to preserve the ability to roll back, is there a way to reclaim this space? I know one way is to do a "reset," but that wipes all my apps, requiring a reinstall, which is a pain. Is there a better/easier way?

As I understand it Win10 1511 10586 is more or less an upgrade over 10240 and as such there may be a Windows.old Folder on your HDD. Four of my computers had that after the same Folder left over from Win7 and Win8.1 were deleted. Might try disk cleanup, may get rid of it. Or simply wait 32 days to see if it automatically deleted.

Hi Guys,

I recently did a clean install of Win 10 1511 on one of my machines and things went so well that I thought I'd take the chance and upgrade my other system from Win 10 10240 to 1511, using the "Media Creation Toll" method...

It seemed to take about twice as long as a clean install, but it got there in the end and aside from a couple of minor annoyances, which I sorted (thanks to this amazing forum!) it's running fine.

One surprise that I got, after running a thorough disk-cleanup, the disk usage dropped from 20.5GB (pre-cleanup) to 11.9 (post cleanup).

Prior to the 1511 upgrade, my 10240 system disk was showing 17.5GB used space.

My questions is: Where did all of this free-space come from?

I don't use system restore and like to keep my system disk as clean of junk as possible.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi,

I've recently brought a new computer with a 200gb hard disk. I decided to add my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 PATA 120gb hard disk from my previous computer as a slave. When we restarted the pc, windows only recognises 32gb!?

I thought it might be a BIOS problem, but surely if it recognises the 200gb hard disk, it should recognise the full 120gb of the slave?

I've removed the jumper as indicated in the manual.

Any help appreciated!

Pete

Answer:Windows only recognises 32gb from a 120gb hard disk!

I was going to suggest you check that there was not a jumper connected to the "Limit drive size to 32GB for older motherboards and operating sytems" switch. But I see you say you removed the jumper (S?)

My next question would be was this disk previously partitioned and formatted to be 32GB? IF so you probably need to wipe it and repartition to recover the rest. The partition table was modified to meet the other motherboards limitations.

Hello, I got a Lexicon OMEGA USB recording interface with Cubase LE 4 audio software, it wasn't working so I tried a 100% uninstall, I'm not sure if it is 100% gone or not...

I ran checkdisk/error checker on both hard drives. 2nd hard drive worked fine, which I ran 1st.

Then the C: ran & when I checked the properties, now it's using up 130GB of memory from 32-40GB just before the check disk...
Please help/advise.

Should I just simple reformat the C: from windows? How do I do that?

Can I just copy the 32GB of files while looking in the C: over to the 2nd harddrive right in windows....reformat it then move them back over?

Just installed W10 on this little convertible netbook as an upgrade. All went very well. Requires the 32-bit version as that is all this box can support.

For info, this has 2Gb RAM and 64Gb SSD. Not the fastest box in the world, but it does run very well.

W10 so far has performed better than W8.1 as I also noted when I did this on the Surface Pro 1st gen.

Downside is the small screen and using the standard desktop. Fat fingers and no really good stylus don't make that a joy to use. Screen seems a bit crisper which I also noted on the SP1.

Hi,
I recently bought a Asus Tradnsformer t100. It has windows 8.1 32 bit. This takes up almost 18gigs of memory and not I can not download onto my computer, saying the disk is full. How can I add additional disk space. I contacted Asus and they were of no help. This is rendering my notebook/tablet useless. Any information greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:asus transformer t100 no memory

If I recall correctly, that device utilizes a MicroSD card slot for storage. SO if you are running out of space see if you can get a bigger SD card. It likely would hold one around 64GB or larger But I don't know for sure.

My wife has a T100 (Win8.1), and I was running Malwarebytes on it, when it froze up.
I tried to restart it, and it took me to an 'automatic repair', which took me to a 'restart' or 'advanced options" choice.
Selecting 'advanced options' or 'restart', both took me right back to the auto repair - a vicious circle.
I have not been able to wake up the folks at ASUS yet, so here I am.
What can I do to get out of the loop, and start her computer?

Hi guys!
My problem is - as stated in the topic - laptop replacement.
I thought it would be easy - right now I am using Asus T100 which I love, but I thought that this was time to upgrade, and I don't want to upgrade much.
I basically need regular laptop that is portable (13 inch is max, realy I prefer 11.6 or 12, 12.5), has good battery life (let's say min. 6-7 hours) and a good screen (it doesn't have to be really high resolution). The performance doesn't really matter to me much (I don't do anything graphically intensive) - I just want a smooth experience like on my T100, but maybe a bit more of RAM (let's say 4 GB).
I don't need the 2 in 1 combo, I don't even need touch on my laptop.
I thought that would be easy - I just want an average laptop, but it's not. I can't find and laptop that would suit my needs. The only thing I could find is the Dell XPS12, but it has touch, and the hinge, which as I said earlier - I don't need.
Do you know if there is a laptop that is something like Dell XPS12, but without the touch etc?
Regards :)

Hi,
This morning I turned on my brand new ASUS T100 Transformer Book with Windows 8.1 pre-installed for the first time, of course I got the 'normal' screen prompt's when setting up a brand new computer. Such as country/language, time zone, set up internet connection, do I have a microsoft account/then sign in, etc..Now I'm prompted at the next screen being asked " How should we set up your PC ? " , I'm already running windows 8.1 on a different pc, so on this screen I'm being asked the question: Copy your settings and Windows Store apps from another PC, or set this up as a new PC.
There are two option's showing: my current pc that has windows 8.1 installed on it & 2. Set this up as a new PC instead, and then on a line below that option there's a checkbox that offers to ' Sync my Start screen layout' . Which would be the best option for me, I'm sure other member's in here have ran into this..what did you choose ?
Thanks so much for your replies (hopefully) !
David

Hi everyone,
I've finally finished installing a fresh copy of Windows 10 on my Asus T100. First impressions are great. If I'm not mistaken, it doesn't use as much disk space as Windows 8.1. I have 20 gigs of memory free out of the 29 available. Which is great. Plus, the OS feels smoother and faster.

I have a question. I've noticed in the Task Manager that the OS when idle uses only 500-600 MB of ram. Is it possible? Win 8.1 used up to 1.2-1.3 GB when idle. Are 500MB final, or when the OS is released is it going to use more ram?

Answer:Windows 10 memory usage on Asus T100

"Idle" really doesn't tell you much. If you just booted up, then it won't have a lot of memory allocated. However, once you start using it, then it will start caching more things and use more memory. This memory is typically available to be reclaimed by applications running in the system though, so you typically don't have to worry about it.

The OS allocates its initial buffers and caches based on the size of available memory in your system, so a system with 2GB of free RAM will start with less memory "available' than one with 4GB or 8GB.

Hi, I have an Asus T100 Tablet/laptop hybrid and wanted a blue tooth mouse for it so I bought the Microsoft Sculpt touch mouse. For some reason when i use the mouse it jumps around and is not smooth at all. I have all the appropriate drivers installed and updated. I tested the mouse on another laptop and it worked fine.

I picked up a refurb Surface Pro 64GB from eBay this week for $500 and have been using the tablet. But I'm thinking about returning it and getting an ASUS T100 instead.
The Surface Pro (talking first gen) is really nice. But the battery life is nearly a deal breaker. And I'm not in love with the 2 pounds of weight or the $130 keyboard either. But I do like the full HD display, fast processor and SSD, and digitizer (just wish I had a better place to stick the pen).
I played with the ASUS T100 at Best Buy. I like the lighter weight and much longer battery life. The Baytrail and eMMC will be enough performance. The keyboard concerns me. It's hard to really test a keyboard on a store display counter, but I'm sure it's not going to be as nice as this stupid $130 Type Cover 2. I worry about the plastic back getting slippery in my hands as well. But it's almost half the price ($380 for 64GB).
So I feel conflicted between do I want the better laptop like experience in the Surface Pro (which includes being tethered to a power cord) or saving some money and going with the better tablet experience in the T100 until the perfect tablet arrives?
It's a dang shame the Surface 2 doesn't have a Baytrail and Windows 8, that would be pretty close to perfect.
PS. Plan B is to just return the Type Cover 2 and waiting for the Power Cover next year to supplement my battery life.

Answer:Deciding between an ASUS T100 and a refurb Surface Pro

What about the Dell Venue 11 Pro? $499 for the tablet (Baytrail and 64gb) and $129 for a truly awesome KB with extra battery. The Asus T100 KB build quality is major weakness...

I'm trying to use an external Samsung TV/monitor (model LN-T2642H) through HDMI. The native resolution of the monitor/TV is 1360X768, which is also the native resolution of ASUS T100.
If I try to use the monitor/TV as the only display, the device selected is Generic PnP Monitor and the native resolution of 1360X768 is not available for selection. Intel HD Graphics Control Panel only shows 1280X720 (selected) and 1920X1080 (too high for my monitor).

Is there a way to set up the 1360X768 resolution with the existing driver (up to date)? Is there another driver that I can download and that will allow this resolution? Can I use a different version of the Generic PnP Monitor that allows 1360X768 resolution?
With the only resolution available i.e., 1280X720 the quality is bad.

Many thanks,

Answer:Low resolution on external TV/Monitor (ASUS T100 Win 8.1)

On the screen resolution window, click advanced settings. Then click "list all modes" under the adapter tab. Now see if what you want is listed.

For a few weeks now the Internet and Internet related apps have displayed the 'not responding' message on our Asus transformer t100. It is not to do with our Internet as other devices work. We have taken it to the local computer specialist a few times now who fiddles with it and it works for a few uses but then it reverts back and so we take it back to him. Once it starts not responding, every time after that we reopen Internet /switch off the laptop, it says that same thing and so we can't use the Internet. Any solutions? Is it a virus? Thanks

i have searched the web high and low and cannot get this to work i am hoping you can help.  I started a new job and tasked with figuring out a way to create and deploy images for new tablets we got.  For all our other machines we used to use Ghost but can't use that now. In any case we have Asus T100 tablets running WIN8.1 Pro 32bit OS x64bit based processor, there are no legacy boot options in bios only EUFI i am trying to boot from a USB. I need help getting a way to image this machine so i can use images for deployment. Can you provide any help? ? I followed your instructions in the link below but that didn't work either i'm at my wits end...   Thank you so much in advance even if you can just point me in the right directions. Answer:Imaging & Deployment Options Asus T100

Here is what worked for me to successfully capture and deploy an Image on an Asus T100TA Tablet:
To Capture the WIM:
NOTES
• These instructions assume you have a basic understanding of OS Deployments and the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT).
• The source (aka “reference”) computer you are capturing should be in a workgroup, not joined to your domain. Disjoin your domain before continuing if necessary.
• You must have the same OS you’re trying to capture on the “reference” computer loaded into MDT – if your source computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise with Service Pack 1 x64 then that DVD/OS must be loaded into MDT
• For these instructions the computer running MDT will be referred to as \\MDT1 and the deployment share will be \Deploymentshare$
• These instructions will not include hitting “Next”, etc. unless that is the only action on a screen
Prepare your “reference” computer by installing your Operating System and any other customizations you will want. Once you have completed your build process continue on.
Setup MDT to Capture your image
1. Open MDT, then expand Deployments, then expand your deployment share
2. Right click “Task Sequences” and select “New Task Sequence”
a. Task Sequence ID: Capture
b. Task Sequence name: Capture Image
3. Select the “Sysprep and Capture” Task Sequence template
4. Select your Operating System
5. Do not specify a ... Read more

I just tried to create a Disk Image of my system to protect against future system crashes using Windows 7 Backup feature. I select my M: drive which is my extra internal storage. It's a 1.5 TB drive, of which 731 GB are free. It says it will backup the Local Disk C: and the Reserved System Partition (which will take up to 71 GB according to Windows).

However, it gives me the error message that I'm sure many are familar with that it does not have enough disk space to creat the shadow drive, etc. Ofcourse this is not acurate as I have tons of free space on the destination drive.

Anyone know how to resolve this issue? I also have System Protection on at the default 2% setting, if that helps.

Thanks!

Answer:Windows 7 Backup Fails (Not Enough Disk Space)

I suspect it's complaining about lack of free space on your system partition rather than on the destination drive. What's the used and free space like on C?

Is there a way to download/install the new version of Windows 8.1 that fits onto these latest tablets? (I have previously used DigitalRiver to download Windows 7 .iso's ... I can't seem to find an equivalent website with the latest compact Windows 8.1 .iso files)
I really like the T100 - but the limited space is really frustrating! So I'm hoping you knowledgeable people will have the answer :)

Answer:How do I reduce the system partition size on my Asus T100?

There is a WIMBoot method that reduces usage significantly, but the instructions I've seen are for the Dell Venue 8 Pro, not the T100, although I'm not sure how different the two are.
You can remove the recovery partition, which takes up several GBs (dont do if you intend to do the WIMBoot procedure, might be a bit too advanced though, if its possible, it was a PITA for me) so I would do that as a quick and easy way.

Trying to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 the upgrade fails due to insufficient space in the Recovery Partition on drive D:The size of the Recovery Partition is setup at factory installation by HP and it only leaves about 3GB which is insufficient for the Windows 10 upgrade to start as the upgrade begins by creating files in the Recovery Partition.I do not want to delete the Windows 8.1 recovery files that already exist on the D:  Recovery Partition from the factory build and in fact I do not think the o/s will allow me to delete those recovery files.Any help in how to complete the Windows 10 upgrade is appreciated.

Marius3 Don't know why the Win10 Upgrade is trying to write to your Recovery partition -- but it should NOT be doing that. My guess is that you're trying to do the Upgrade through Windows Update -- which is the least reliable and most problematic way to do this. Instead, I would suggest that you use this link to create Win10 install media:  Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help Then, insert that media into your PC (while Windows is still running) and launch the Upgrade from there. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

I've had my Acer Aspire 5310 laptop for a few months now with Windows Vista. I have an 80GB hard drive, partitioned into two drives as default.

Until now I've never noticed that the numbers didn't add up. I know when you buy and 80GB hard drive, it should actually show up as less due to bits and bytes and what not (80GB=74GB roughly) but I found something fishy in Disk Management. There is a drive showing up with no letter assigned to it which is nearly 10GB in size and after doing the math it accounts for the 10GB i lack after adding my two 32GB hard drives together.

So I have 2 x 32GB drives plus this weird drive which is 10.

I have attached the screenshot of disk management.

If anyone knows what is going on here I would very much appreciate it!

Cheers, Darren (newbie)

Answer:Problem with Vista Disk Management/Being robbed of hard disk space!

has this just recently appeared? This is a longshot, but if you have Kaspersky lap installed then that could be the problem. It autologs roughly 10 gigs of data without your permission, it is easy to get rid of, but annoying none the less.
However this doesn't seem to likely as what seems to have happened here is that you have accidently split one of your hard drives into two. Either that or a program like deamon tools has created a virtual drive. Do you use either deamon tools or alcohol 120?

Hi peeps and thanks in advance for any help you can give me! My laptop is doing my head in thanks to its new-found ability to chew up free disk space on my C:/ drive. Not sure if this problem has been on-going for a few weeks or something, but it's come to a head now!! A few bits of info that might be handy: Vista Home Premium 32bit, laptop is about three years old, 160GB HDD partitioned into a C: and a D: (both with approx 70GB total space according to Properties).
The story goes like this:

1) Got low disk space warning pop up (something like 300MB left!) - thought that this was entirely plausible since my wife keeps taking videos of our little baby on her camera and saving them on the lappy!
2) Decided to move some User folders from the C: to the D: and in the process moved about 5GB which then freed up several gig of space on the C: drive. Then I noticed that this was consistently dropping and the HDD light was flickering all the time, even when the laptop was not in use.
3) Updated and ran all the following programs: AVG 2011 Free, CCleaner, CWShredder, Malwarbytes - and nothing untoward reported.
4) Booted into safe mode and ran the programs again and still nothing reported.
5) Accessed VSS records via a command prompt and this was set to UNBOUNDED maximum capacity and showing as 16GB in use on disk, so revised this down to 12GB (a cautious approach, I admit!) and freed up a bit more space but this again is slowly being reduced.
6) Ran WinDirStat and this is showing ... Read more

Yes. But not-recommended.The recovery partition  is the only way you have to repair your system in the event of a failure. The computer makers now want you to use that recover if ever a major failure makes your computer unusable. If you need more storage for your photos and videos, consider these methods:A. Use DVD discs to store photos and videos.B. Use a cloud service to save your most important information. C. Purchase in economic external hard drive for extra storage. It would be a b ad idea to format our hard drive unless there was something urgent.

You will not have 500GB due to the conversion between binary and decimal for reporting sizes.

Last week i installed windows XP Pro on my desktop. It has a 250GB hard drive which has 1 partition (C drive only), NTFS offcourse. I did not format it while installing windows as it has lots of stuff in it. Thereís over 50GB free and iíve been removing a lot of stuff from the hard drive to make up some space but in windows i get an error message that i donít have enough disk space, the disk cleanup utility runs cant free up space and i can not install or copy anything in the hard drive. Iíve noticed that when i deleted some file holding (or not) the shift key the free size goes lower although the files are being deleted from the hard disk.

Anyone has a solution for that beside moving my data to somewhere else and formatting it?

Hi
I have 2 HD's on my computer (primary master & primary slave). Master is Maxtor & slave is a Samsung HD. it has been working fine for over a year now. 2 days back while booting I got the message "primary hard drive fails".

I checked the BIOS settings & found that it had lost the settings for my master HD. I rebooted again and it booted fine & the master HD settings in BIOS came back. I thought that probably my CMOS battery was dying so I replaced it. The same symptoms have come back after that. The system keeps loosing the primary HD settings in the BIOS. it has never lost the settings on the slave drive ever. sometimes it will recognize the master drive but still fail to boot giving a error "boot disk failure".

if I turn it off for a while and power it back up, the system will boot up properly sometimes & at other times it refuses to boot. I am not sure where the problem is since it has been working for 1+ yrs now.

Is my HD failing?. it is only 1+ yr old. But since it boots up sometimes, I tend to think otherwise.
Something wrong in the MB?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks
Bhidu

Answer:Primary Hard disk fails

Make sure that Hard drive connections (cable and power) are tight. You can download a hard drive diagnostic program from the Maxtor web site and run it, although an intermittent problem might not show up. It sounds like your hard drive is failing and you should make sure that you have backed up all important data before it goes completely.

My NTFS non-system partition is now almost well defragmented. However this applies only to small and medium sized files.

There are still approx 40 big files (> 1 GB) which cannot be defragmented because there is no free single (!) space slot where they fit in.

So I need a way to shift all occupied clusters to get free contigous space on my hard disk.
Currently about 150 GB is be free on my partition but divided into thousand of individual chunks.

I tried now half a dozend of defragmenters.
Sad but true: NO (!) one was able to perform this easy operation.

Can someone recommend me a real defragmenter which is able to perform such a "shift" operation?

Thank you
Peter

Answer:How to shift all free space on hard disk to get contigous free space?

I'm not sure exactly what you have and exactly what you are trying to do.

I personally use Windows 7 built in defrag and have found nothing better.

Windows 7 will put things like Windows 7 wants and needs things put.
The Windows 7 defrag or 3rd party defrag programs doesn't care where you want things put or what order you want them.

As far as I know you will have no control over such things.
You are obviously using a 3rd party defrag tool because you are watching the little colored squares and noticing what looks like free spaces between things. Why things are defragged in the fashion they are I really don't know.
What I do know is Windows 7 defrag put things in the order that Windows 7 wants them and that is what counts.

Hi, I have a system here that does not always detect the harddisk during startup (Detecting IDE Drives ...). If it does detect it, it will show the primary and secondary drives, the HD led stays on for a few seconds, then the screen jumps to black with a cursor blinking in the upper left corner: _ (In those few seconds I can still access the BIOS).

If it doesn't detect the HD, it continues the POST till it gives the BOOT FAILURE message.

I was actually trying to fix the problem that the system locks up during some applications. I had already run the WD diagnostics tool for the WD HD and it showed that everything was fine yesterday. I also ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool (from a bootdisk) and that one did not show errors, but the pc did restart automatically during the test not at specific points. (just before that there is a short pitching sound). I removed the dust inside the pc and checked the cables. And it was still working after that. I closed the case and moved it aside a bit and this morning the problem started that it does not always detect the HD and that it doesn't startup even when the hard disk is detected. I have run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool again when it failed to detect the HD and it still gives no errors, and now the problem that the system restarts automatically during that test, is gone.

But I don't know what is wrong with it now and I've gone from a system that locks up regularly to a system that does not even starts... Read more

Hi - I keep getting the message that a backup failed due to less than 400 MB on the Windows disk. I have about 350 GB available on the disk!

Other backups have worked OK. I have seen a long thread on the Microsoft site with lots of people saying they have the same intermittent problem, but no solution. Anyone know what causes this?

I'm working Home Premium, and backup up to another hard disk on the same machine which also has lots of free space.

Thanks guys

Answer:Vista backup fails "not enough space on Windows disk"

Just a couple of simple questions, which you may have already covered.
How much space is on the C drive.(where Vista is installed)
On the 'Where do you want to save your backup' page, you are sure it is your second drive and not the 'Recovery' partition.

Question: Hard Disk Space

I have a Windows XP Home Dell Laptop, Inspiron E1405.

A while back I had about 7.9 GB free space left in the C drive. I have not installed any new programs lately and the only thing that changes are various updates from Windows and McAfee Anti-Virus from time to time.

Now I found out that I have only 5.85 GB free space left. I don't think those updates can take up such a large amount of space and there must be something else occupies such volume.

My system is clean as far as I'm concerned and Malwarebytes/Spyware Doctor have not found anything out of the ordinary. Any ideas what that could be?

Question: Hard disk space??

Hi,

First of all I apologise if this is in the wrong category and for the simplicity of the question! I recently purchased Nero 11 which is installed on my laptop. However when I try to burn a dvd - a message states that there is not enough free space on my hard disk to perform the task. I am using a fairly old laptop from my university days which had its hard drive split into 2 (C and D=data disk). I have tried to clean up both parts and have managed to free 5GB space on C - and D has 23 GB free. Should nero not be able to run on this? I'm not sure how I can clean up any further space on C as whn I right-click from my Computer it is not showing where all the disk space has been allocated.
Not overly computer literate so any help/advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

Answer:Hard disk space on XP

Welcome to TF!

How large is your drive? If you are deleting less than 100MB, it will show only 10% (.10) of a GB. It rounds it off to one decimal (32.1GB) You will get a better idea of how much space is on there if you convert the bytes.

1048576 Bytes = 1024 Kilobytes
1024 Kilobyes = 1 MB
1024 MB = 1GB
1024 GB = 1TB

You should leave a minimum of about 10%. This space is needed to perform some maintenance chores, such as defrag. In addition, the additional space is required to download some programs etc.

Question: Hard disk space

Can anyone help me on my little problem? My computer at home has OS Xp and a few programs installed on the c drive which has a partition size of 10 gb, now all the programs should be using about 3 gb of space but it shows that 7 gb is in use. I check the c drive for temp and chk files and there are none. Select all the files including the ones that are hidden and take properties to find out the space they are on and it shows that it is 3 gb. What can possibly be holding back the other 4 gb and is there a way to free the space without formating the computer???

I had around 10 GB of free space, then all of a sudden I had 8 GB, then I had 3/6 GB (don't remember which) then I had 3 GB, now of late I'm ranging from 1 to 5 GB. I recently installed a .88 GB game, before I did I had 2-3 GB, now I have 1.96 GB, and it's been staying around there since then. I've never installed/downloaded anything over 1 GB, but sometimes it's rather large, over 100 MB, so I don't know if it all ends up over 1 GB or not, but it's certainly not enough to bring it down to 3 GB after I had 6/8 GB.

What is going on?

Hi,I am currently running windows XP but my pc only has 20gb of memory/space (old pc). My local disk (c drive) only has 3 GB of space left. I have done disk cleanups, removed old pragrams etc but I just really need more space.I was wondering what you suggest is the best way to go. I am not very savvy when it comes to opening up the case and putting things in there. A friend suggested purchasing an external hard drive which apparantly are quite reasonable in price. Is this a good option or am I better off taking my pc to a computer store and having them increase my GB's for me?Thanks

Answer:Best way to get more hard disk space

I'd bring it to a computer shop if you are doubting yourself and you have important data on it that is not backed up etc.If you want more space safely, you could enable drive compression on the hard drive and gain more space....only downside is that all data has to decompress from its compressed state so it slows the computer down to gain the storage space.Best option is to have someone migrate your data to a new larger HD, but if you dont want to spend any money and dont mind the computer slowing down, you can use drive compression which is very easy to turn on for more space.

Question: hard disk space

Hi
I split my 160 gig hard drive into 4 partitions, and i think some of my hard sisk space is being "eaten" by something. I think it has as high as 20 gigs.

e.g. i just partitioned one of the logical drives
and this is the information it gives me

Used Space 68,083,712 bytes 64.9 MB
Free space 15,658,618,880 bytes 14.5 GB
Capacity 15,726,702,592 bytes 14.6 GB

Can you tell me where are those precious bytes

MY precious bytes

Answer:hard disk space

you need to list your total disk size windows recognises & the sizes for every partition and unallocated space. listing just 1 partition means nothing. if using winXP you need at least SP1 installed or it will not see anything above 132GB.

i don't get it. the more i go on, the more and more disk space seems to vanish into thin air. xp usually takes a couple of gigs up on the hard disk, right? maybe 5 gigs at the very most. i've got 8 gigs taken up by videos in one folder. the programs i've got installed are negligable. the program files folder is 500mb. and yet my disk only has 20 gigs spare on a 40 gig hard disk. i've looked in every folder on the hard disk and i simply can't find any folders with anything of any great size in it. i've defragged the hard drive. anybody know what's going on here?

Question: hard disk space.

Hey guys.I have a question about hard disk space.  I have a 71 gig hd, with about 7-8gig left.  But when I go to the "my computer" button, double click on the c drive, and read the tool tips, it only shows about 12 gigs as being used.Any idea on how to check this, and yes, it seems I have alot of space used for the few programs i have installed.Running windows xp, sp2I did run ccleaner, and spyware doctor.  Did not seem to make a diffrence.

Answer:hard disk space.

I have never seen a 71 gig drive, but make sure you are free of viruses and spyware first. Did you do your scans from safe mode with system restore off? Is the Recycle Buin empty? How much hard drive space does it seem you have used and unused? Do you have the option set to show hidden/system files?

Your Drive is not what it say's but do not panic, We are all in the same boat, it's how they calculate the drive size now it's a way of getting more money for less, just like going to buy a pound of apples they give you one short as the say dust on the scales make it one pound. As regards the Space being eaten up, well that's progress for you, XP and NTFS and Restore say's it all. That's how they make you keep buying a PC with a bigger Hard Drive and CPU etc. Don't Worry I'm just a grumpy old man

Hi everyone,

I'm using Windows XP, and have a 120GB Hard Drive. When I right click on C:/ and go to properties, it tells me that I only have 5 GB of space left. I have searched through all of my folders, and have no clue where all the space is going. I have downloaded JDiskReport and TreeSize to help me diagnose the problem. Interestingly enough, after scanning the entire C:/ drive, the programs only find 35GB worth of files. This would suggest that my hard drive is smaller than it really is, but when I go to My Computer properties, it confirms that my disk space is 120GB.

What is going on!?

Answer:Where is all my hard disk space going?!?!

Have you run a diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer? If you have run a chkdsk lately and scanned for errors any bad blocks would be removed and the paging file will take some additional space although that should not be that much space unless the drive is dying. HAve you modified or adding anything lately?
