I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am a tech enthusiast who does not have the money to fund his habit. As such I am not able to update my tech as often as I desire. Also when I do it requires much saving and a painstaking amount of research on what I will ultimately spend my hard saved money on. Now obviously research should always be done especially on such pricey purchases so as to avoided the dreaded buyers remorse that undoubtedly occurs because Technology updates so frequently. So while I mull over slash save toward my next computer purchase which I am hoping will be a fanless Surface device I find myself surrounded by ancient technology by which to check email, browse the web, and use social media at home. While my Lumia Icon is great at this I really want a tablet with a 7 inch and up screen to use at home both for the added screen real estate and so my Lumia is not discharged when I need to venture out of my home. So my question is what is a good budget windows tablet that I could purchase for under $100 while I save toward my ultimate goal? I have heard that the HP Stream 7 and WinBook TW700 might fit this bill and was wondering if anyone could offer their experiences with these devices. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Good Budget tablet.

I use a Linx 8, bought off Amazon UK, haven't had any problems within the past month of having it so far.

I am looking for the cheapest Windows 8 tablet available. I am getting one to replace my ipad and one for my uncle. The best I can find is a refurbished Dell XPS 10 with winRT for $200ish. I can also get a new Vivotab Smart with atom proc for $400. Ideally I want an atom proc, but the price difference may be a bit much. Are there cheaper atom tablets for less than $400? I don't want to spend that much since its mostly for leisure use.

I am also curious about web browsing performance. The atom will be faster than the ARM one, but by how much? And will the ARM one be faster than my old ipad? The other thing is there is supposedly flash support for both. How good is the performance?

Lastly. Is there any news of Windows 8 getting Words with Friends? It's available on Windows Phone 8, but not regular Windows 8. I am a WWF addict. I also play a lot of Scramble with friends. Other than web surfing, these are the only two must have apps. I have a bunch of friends both real and fictional that play them so substitutes wouldn't work.

Answer:Help me decide on budget Windows 8 tablet

The ARM will have much better battery life than the Atom, but the Atom will be somewhat faster and can run x86 applications (doesn't use RT).

For only $400 i'd go with the Atom, but it has half the battery life of the ARM version.

Question: Budget Tablet?

does anyone have knowledge of/experience with the Insignia Tablets? I saw an 11.6" screen model, 32GB, Android 7.0 with a detachable keyboard for $130, which seems fairly reasonable. I only need a tablet for the most basic things: email, surfing the net, etc.

Are there any other tablets in a similar price range? Thank you.

Today the much awaited Made In India tablet was launched. Its named as Aakash
(meaning Sky in Hindi). Its mainly meant for Students and will be available at
subsidised rate while for masses its cost is ~$60
It was about an year ago the prototype was shown to the public and its cost
was estimated at $35. "Has the device lived up to the $35 price tag?"
Technically, it hasn't. The HRD ministry has informed us that the manufacturing cost of the device is $37.98. The sales price of the device however is $49.98 after adding the transportation cost, warranty and other costs. The manufacturer will be able to deliver 1,00,000 units of the device to consumers at $49.98 that is approximately Rs. 2276. So the $35 claim does not hold true in real terms. ? ?So, if $37.98 is the cost of the device, what will the institutes have to pay? How much is the government going to subsidize the device? The answer is 50%. An institute that wishes to make this tablet available to its student will pay Rs. 1500 or less, the ministry has informed us.?(Source NDTV) Complete Specs -

I want budget tablet (at max 20000 INR) for reading and some basic editing. My requirements:
1. Good battery life
2. 4 GB RAM
3. Better multiasking (split screen view)
4. Good processor
5. At least 64GB storage
I was searching for Mi Pad 3. It runs Android. And fortunately Microsoft have good office apps on android. But is not yet launched in India.
So I googled for alternatives and for more info.
I realized that Mi Pad 3's MIUI 9 does not yet have split screen view. So it was deal breaker. Also I realized that I wont be having any Android updates. So I was quick to look for Windows tablet.
But then there is simply no budget Windows tablet in India. I wish to have tablet which will Windows update for at least five years. Or may be I will install Latest Windows from USB, so that I can always have latest build on tablet.
I come across fact that Mi Pad 2 ran Windows:
And this awesome multitasking in iOS 11 with iPad:
So I realized if I can have full Windows on tablet, it will be a lot beautiful than both.
I read recently that Windows on snapdragon will have huge battery life. How long we should wait to get such budget Windows tablet? Or is there any such available already?

Planing on using the budget box build for the tower. But now I want a decent graphics card to pair with it. Any good recommendations? Have another $75 or so to spend on this build.

Kinda leaning towards:
ASUS ENGT430/DI/1GD3(LP) GeForce GT 430 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

But would love any better recommendations.

Answer:Good graphics card to go with the TS Budget Box,2761-2.html

They recommend a 5670 ~$80 or 5550 for ~$60. I'd say the Radeon 5550 would be more than fine for a general purpose machine and a little gaming.
These are meant to give comparable performance to a Geforce 9600 GT, and more than enough for a little gaming at 1650x1080 resolution or below.

I don't think any of the lower end fermi offerings are particularly good from what I've read. Have to go for GTX 460 and upwards or not at all.

A DIY computer almost always means picking out hardware.I have built some desktops myself, but never anything to be proud of. I look for budget stuff and I get stung by low cost junk. So now I ham asking. If I do a search for budget hardware guides, How will I know if it is junk or not?Example: I looked for 'Budget Gaming PC Guides' and found: any of the above honest? If not, please provide a good link. Thanks

Answer:Budget Gaming PC Guides. Any good?

They are all a bit of a jumble if I'm honest.  Especially that first one that tells you to use the power supply the case includes, it should be basic knowledge that these are generally terrible. As far as quality on parts, brand is important, For motherboards I only look at Gigabyte or ASUS and for power supplies I only tend to look at the likes of XFX, Corsair (Non CX/VS series), Antec, SuperFlower, Seasonic.etc.  The brand of RAM isn't that important though and if budgets are really tight you could always get a cheap case, although they can be noisy and a right pain to build in.The key thing to remember is to stick with quality, even the most basic Celeron based office PC I build will still get a Gigabyte/ASUS board and a good power supply (Usually Seasonic OEM ones at that level).  It's a bad idea to compromise on quality just to save a bit of money, it'll likely cost more in the long run.Gaming PCs are not cheap, when you start trying to cut corners you will have trouble.  You get what you pay for.

Buildings a new internet/gaming rig, and I want to avoid dropping the extra $$$ on a s939 setup if possible, so what are some cheaper alternatives? The only thing I wont skimp out on is the GPU. Overclocking is not out of the question.

Answer:Budget Gamer - Whats a good combo?

Socket 939 is only a couple of bucks more than socket 754, plus I'm not sure how many (if any) socket 754 boards support PCIe which would be a vital addition to any gamer.

Regardless though, I would recommend...

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
MSI nforce 4 socket 939
nVidia 6600GT
2x512MB G.Skill

The rest isn't too important, those are your basic components that will matter the most performance wise.

I currently have an ASUS RT-N56U with custom firmware(not DD-WRT though), obviously a consumer grade model, and I'm in the process of putting together a "home lab".

I'm also going to be bringing a DIY rack server up soon in a lack rack and I wanted a rack mount router to go along with it. But I'm also interested in the extended security features and other things not available in consumer routers, if possible and whatever they may be. I also wanted something a little more higher end so that I could practice on it, maybe like a cisco router or switch or something.

However, I don't really want to spend much on it. Can anyone make any recommendations? I would want it to be a relevant piece of hardware that you might find it an actual business.

Answer:Good budget/beginner rack mount router?

Then I shut down the computer. When I restarted it again in less than one hour and tried to go online using my school Wi-Fi, now it failed because "no wireless networks in the range" can be found. I tried many things this evening, including turning on/off the wi-fi card, deleting my bluetooth set up, downloaded and installed  a new driver (published 2009-4-18) for the card. Sometimes, I can see that the card can read the wi-fi signal as "excellent" but "with limited or no access". Check the available networks, none can be found  everytime.I can't think about other options to try, please help! I really appreciate it! Jonathan

Answer:X41 tablet suddenly can't find the wireless networks in the range

I will reply to myself and all of you can share my sucess. It seems this problem is very common for this type of mini card. Here is what I did: 1) control panel > Administrative tools > Services > open it. 2) find Even log, double click it. 3) change the "manual" to "autamatic". 4) "start" the service. 5) find "wireless zero configuration", double click it. 6) "stop" the service, then "start" the service, 7) repeat it one more time. 8) close the service window, wait 30 seconds. You done! I didn't need to restart the window, maybe you do.Never give up! Enjoy! Jonathan

I am looking for a good board in the $40 range to build systems with. We used the ECS K7S5A Pro in about 6 systems this week and I am looking for an alternative to that board in the same price range.

The main thing is it should support a 266mhz FSB, and I am looking for something that has good reviews as far as a stable board.

Answer:What is a good motherboard in the $40 range

Asrock K7VT2 based on the KT266a chipset so 100/133 FSB, USB ports, onboard Ethernet & even SDR/DDRam slots.

Just ahd a call from a friend who has just bought a Netgear DG834PN ADSL2+ RangeMax MIMO-G Wireless Modem Router as he has a large house. The problem is that the lower floor area can receive a good signal at one end (underneath the room where the router is) but at the other end there is no signal. The floors seem to have been designed by Hitler's Bunker architect as they are 18" of solid concrete and the walls tend to be solid concrete. So the question is can anyone recommend a powerful signal booster that he can put downstairs to amplify the signal? I have though of a plug in network through the leccy but for all sorts of peculiar reasons he would prefer an extender.G

Answer:Range extenders..a good puzzle here.

Take a look at this one Hawking Wireless ? G Range Extender downloads all the information sheets etc and take a read click hereAlso read at this postingclick hereHave use this equipment and it does what it say extend the wireless network without any problem once it set up correctly, you have upgraded the firmware to the latest version

Hello everyone. I'm hoping some home movie making masters can help me with suggestions. I'm currently in the market for a digital camcorder to record my kids during school plays, performances, etc. So essentially i want one that is known to be good quality when recording indoors.

1.What brand and type do you recommend(media type).

2.With your suggestion please include software recommendations to easily transfer the data to a DVD-R that will be played on a stand alone DVD player. I will be using the PC in sig for this. I have both USB and Firewire capable motherboard.

My budget is approx. $700 USD. I would like to stay under that if possible. I also am trying to avoid anything made by Sony as i'm not too fond of their business practices lately. But i'm willing to put that aside if it truly would be the best choice for what i need it for. Thanks for any and all suggestions in advance.

edit: I'm hoping to get this by this weekend. Please don't hesitate to make a recommendation based on your own experiences. All opinions are welcome.

Answer:Good mid-range camcorder suggestions

Hi guys (well Jhon )

Let see if anyone can help me too find a wireless range expander (b/g) for my linksy routers, i have a wrt300N and a wrg54v2 routers, but i want just one range expander right now, i have seen this Wireless-G Range Expander from linksys but i need to know if there is a better option in the market.

Answer:Good wireless range expander

I'm actually NOT a fan of the active range expander products like the one you mention. I prefer either hi-gain antennas or amplifying the signal at the source or destination.

Hawking Tech has a number of products that will help you increase your wireless range. The root page is Hawking Hi-Gain™ WiFi Range Extending Products.

Some of the more interesting products are this Hawking [HSB2] Hi-Gain WiFi Signal Booster, which can be used on either end of a wireless connection to boost the signal power.

Another way to increase your signal strength is by the use of hi-gain antennas. You can choose from omni-directional or directional models, here are a some examples.

Hawking [HAI7SIP] Hi-Gain 7dBi Omni-Directional Antenna

Hawking [HAI15SC] Hi-Gain 15dBi Corner Antenna

[HAO14SD] Outdoor Hi-Gain 14dBi Directional Antenna Kit

I get a call from my friend and she tells me that her wireless router "blew up" so she bought a new one at Walmart. Unable to get online, so can I come over. I get to her house and she was sold a range extender instead of a wireless router. Exchanged it for the right item and now she can get online.

My question is, do the range extenders work? The one she was sold has ethernet ports so you can convert wireless into wired.
I have a cousin with wireless issues in his house and the extender might do the trick.

Answer:Wireless range extenders, any good?

Yes Off Course .. Range extenders or Access Points can work if you a have router at one place and you want to extend the area of coverage of the Wifi signals. Its important to get at least very good or excellent signal in Wifi for you to get good internet speed.

im looking to buy some long range antennas to boost my wifi signal, i currently have a TPlink WR2543ND, which does a decent job in my house but id like to get some signal just outside my house if possible. Would this be better suited for a long range antenna or a wireless access point ? i have a small house and a small backyard if that helps

Answer:good long range antennas ?

Most of the time range issues are due to the client radio, not the access point radio.

Iím looking for a new Mini-PCI card for my Compaq X1000 laptop. Right now I have the Intel 2100 card and it works pretty well but itís only 802.11b and I think the range could probably be better.

I was thinking of going with an Atheros Super-G card as I already have a 108G capable Router in my house, but really what I NEED is a card that has a really good range. There are so many times where Iíll be right on the edge of a wireless network and itís almost like I can only connect if the wind is blowing in the right direction.

Answer:Mini-PCI WiFi card with really good range?

Range is really going to depend on the wires you have ran throughout the laptop, not the card you have. The alternative would be to get some type of PCMCIA wireless card with an external antenna.

Anyone able to help me out by recommending brands and whatnot for a good mid to high end PC?

Looking for an i7 but am wondering if the Haswell-Es are worth it or not. I know you get the two more cores but does the drop in CPU MHz make it worth it really? Or is it best to just go for the best 4 core like the Intel Core i7 Processor i7-4790K.

Also these days which MB manufacturer is the best? Last time I did a build was over 10+ years back. Is it still Asus and Abit as the two big ones?

I don't do a ton of gaming but want a capable gaming card. Something worth the cost but not top of the line should I be looking at the Radeon R7 high end or low end R9 range? If you had to choose which one would you pick between the two does low end r9 lose some performance things you would get from an older high end r7?

This is going to be in a main area I need it to be quiet. Which case and cpu fans are good for keeping the entire thing quiet? The last few times I did builds it sounded like an airport on the home built PCs and I really need this one quiet.

When giving your suggestions feel free to provide links. Basically I want a machine that will be able to run for a few years and run anything I throw at it. I want it quiet and I don't want to be upgrading it often. I already have a SSD, a blu ray writer, and a keyboard, mouse, and speakers and display from the dead system that are all recent additions so good to swap over so just need to build a new case.

Thanks in advance.... Read more

My 1 year old Nokia Monster purity WH-920 went kaput, for no apparent reason. It was perfect for me, but too many people are saying it doesn't last long so i don't want to buy it again.
I'm looking for another handsfree/headset in the same range, which has the volume up/down, call answer and playback keys which work with Lumia 920. I prefer the in-ear ones because I want to be able to carry them in my pocket.
I'm mainly interested in good music playback with nice bass. I checked out some headsets, but they all have mixed reviews. Please help me out on this.
I prefer those which are locally available in India (either through online stores or retail), but i don't mind importing them if they're REALLY good and the customs/duties aren't too high.

This is getting to be a really big issue because my network adapter just can't get a stable connection to our wireless modem.
I would just move it but i am still in high school and ,despite the fact that i basically set up my families home network, my dad believes that he requires the best connection because he pays for the service. While i can understand that to an extent he is
almost never on the network...
So that is where i am stuck, because i would like to fully utilize our internet and the shoddy two bar connection i have right now is far from it.
To be honest i can do just about anything but move my router. My motherboard comes with a 10/100/1000 mbps ethernet connector and i also have a tplink wdn4800 installed. I cannot do it right now but very soon i am going to be moving my room around so the
radio antennas will be able to point towards my modem, but i wouldn't count on it because i have manually rotated my whole case so the radios could point somewhat directly at my modem but it did not help very much.

I'm looking for a WLAN PCI-E card.

It has to have decent range... and I'm hoping for an Atheros chip if possible, I've had good luck with them in my current 2 computers. Even the one in the ZBOX with no external antenna can get a good 100ft range and still be usable.

Also, I'd like if Windows can manage is without any clunky software... I'm not sure if the Asus cards can be used without their silly software or not?

Something like this would be what I'm after, but I can't find any reviews on that one.

Maybe you guys can help me out?

I'm open to USB devices as well if you guys say they are better... I've heard good and bad on both fronts USB and PCI-E.

I'd like to extend the range of my laptop so that it can connect to my wireless router about 50 yards away. My workshop is in a metal shed away from the house and there are times that it would be nice to connect to the internet from there. I bought a D-Link N300 RangeBooster N USB Adapter at a garage sale and thought that might do the trick but the instructions say to delete all other wireless adapter software before installing which doesn't seem like a good idea to me since my machine, a Toshiba Satellite C75DB7230 is less than a year old. Is there a way to install this gadget and only activate it when I need it without fouling up the rest of the machine. I'm running Windows 10.

Answer:Installing second range booster wireless adapter - good or bad idea?

Hi Wolfie!

Open Network and Sharing Center. On the left, click change adapter settings. Right click on your built-in WiFi adapter and disable it. Then you should be good to go to install the USB WiFi adapter. That is how you can switch between the two.

Honestly, though, I doubt you get much better results from just another adapter with an internal antenna. I would suggest something like this:
Linksys RE6500 AC1200 Dual-Band Wireless Range Extender
(cheaper from ebay and Amazon)

If your workshop has a window, set it in the window to get a better "view" to the main router. My main router with WiFi is in the basement of my house. On the second floor I have the RE6500 unit in my daughter's bedroom. It not only repeats the WiFi signal from the basement, but also gives me gigabit wired ethernet ports that her TV and XBOX plug into. I get perfect signal and speed from it despite that the router it repeats from is two floors down and my 55" flat screen TV is exactly right between them on the first floor.

I have both the 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz channels set with the same SSID and password on both the main router and repeater. All my WiFi devices just connect to the same WiFi network and roaming throughout the house they just pick up the strongest signal and attach to it. I have fantastic full speed connection all the way from my hot tub in the back yard to the farthest room on the second floor.

I'm buying a Intel I7-2600k for my main rig. I was wonder what would be a good board to house it and my 2 6950's 2gb. I do plan on overclocking .. So any board that will allow me to do so easier will be appreciated.

Would like to go no higher then 300$

Thanks in Advance.

Answer:Good mid-range to high-end Intel LGA 1155 motherboard suggestions

The best board I've used thus far -a combination of stability, feature set, ease of use and overclock ability would be the Asus P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen 3. It features a PLX bridge chip which allows use of virtually all features concurrently ( the third PCIe x16 @ x4 isn't downgraded to x1 for instance if you use most/all of the SATA 6Gb/USB3.0 ports).
If you don't need a full-size board then the ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3 at around $180 might make some appeal. Both these boards have no facility for video-out (no onboard HDMI, DP, DVI, D-Sub) - not a great concern for most people looking at Z68 boards.

Word of warning: Z77 boards are reportedly due for release on 8th April. While they will offer very little (if anything) over Z68 boards, it will mean that Z68 board prices will take a nosedive. My advice if you need a board right now and want to save some cash, would be to pick up a functional and well regarded cheap board such as the P8Z68-V/G3 (which still a very nice board) and maybe look to replace it with one of the top-end boards which will surely drop in price. It does mean that you would have the hassle of finding a buyer for a board, but on the plus side you may find yourself happy with the P8Z68-V.

You'll notice that all the selections are Asus based products. Asus -at least for Z68, seems to be putting out the best boards overall. Some other vendors are having QC problems. Gigabyte, which are normally my first choice in mobo making, have some infuria... Read more

I have just done extensive searching for the best wireless router, but I am getting conflicting views. Please could somebody recommend me a .g router with the following requirements?:

1) Needs to have a good range so can reach from ground floor into my loft bedroom

2) Needs to be easy to set up as this will be my first router, so I am very unsure about all the ports stuff yet.

3) It HAS to be VERY compatiable with bittorrent as bittorrent is often running on at least 2 computers in the network.

The 2 popular routers seem to be the Linksys WRT54G (easy to set up, but not very good with bittorrent apparently?) and the D-Link DGL-4300 (looks more advanced and hard to set up, but apparently best performance. Not sure about bittorrent compatiability though).
Please could somebody clarify if either of these has problems with bittorrent, and if they are hard/easy to set up?

If anybody has a router that they are happy with that meets the 3 main point I require and they have no problem with bittorrent, I would be very grateful if you could post the model.

Many thanks for the help,

Answer:Advice On Wireless Router 802.11g - Easy To Set-Up, Good Range & Bittorrent Friendly

The WRT54G will probably struggle if you have 2 computers slamming it with torrent traffic as that router is a couple of years old now. Newer ones have QoS abilities and are much better suited to the huge amount of connections you are going to hit them with. I'm running into traffic problems now - if I have a computer slamming the connection with torrent traffic the other computers can hardly even surf the web. I just ordered the newer model from D-Link, the DIR-655 which has all the capabilities of the 4300 but has an even faster processor and draft 802.11n support. The advantage is these offer true QoS abilities to set priority of traffic. In my situation I'm going to give http traffic high priority and give the torrent traffic the lowest priority.

me: i been using vista from the beggining, first it was full of problems, finally i couldn't install sp1, lol so i bought a new copy with sp1 already installed. and it is finally working. what do i expect? total perfection. i want an operating system with no problems at all. i expect that from microsoft. if they have to delay it for that, so be it. if it comes out with problems, i will siriously be looking at other places for my next os, maybe linux, or a version of the macos for a pc. what about you guys, what do you want from windows 7? (besides the obvious new features)

Answer:what do you expect from the next windows?

You bought a whole new copy just to get SP1? That's a bit insane as it's possible to slipstream Vista RTM to SP1 these days easier than people thought it would be using vLite (not really easy but it is possible), but whatever I guess. To each their own...

I know these kinds of threads are going to start appearing as more info and leaks about Windows 7 (or whatever the hell they finally name it) appear as time goes by. Personally, I don't go into these situations "expecting" much of anything. I don't run Vista because there are issues with the sound subsystem that I simply won't tolerate (as I do a lot of audio production work and XP Pro x64 is superior for that stuff, at least so far it is).

If you're expecting an OS to be perfect, forget it. It'll never happen, ever, because it is simply impossible. OS X is no better than Windows, regardless of what the Apple marketing machine would have you believe. Linux distros? Same thing, they're no better. All modern OSes do effectively the same things, so saying one is "better" than any other is a pointless thing to even try to have a discussion on.

As for new features, I really can't comprehend a single thing that a "new" version of Windows will do that's not already being done, nor could I imagine anything "new" that I would actually want at this point - at least from the OS perspective.

People get mixed up on what an OS is supposed to do a... Read more

Hey guyz im new to the forum!
I enjoy windows 10, I upgraded my pc from windows 8.1 to windows 10, and It had been fantastic (with the exception of a few bugs, like Cortana and search bar, but that's not the problem here) . My girlfriends also wants windows 10, she likes its features and looks and she is crazy about all apps like facebook and viber, her pc started notifing her that she can upgrade to windows 10, I told her to wait till we get more information before we do anything stupid ).
Her pc has an AMD processor dual core 2.3 ghz, 2.5 gb of ram, and a really old NVidia gforce 5500 video card. It has windows 7 installed now, works fine, no problems with it. But I was wondering if windows 10 will work better on this pc or work at least at the same level of performance as windows 7 x32 home edition. Cuz it would be bad to miss this opportunity to upgrade when we both paid for our OS.
The only problem I think of regarding her old pc , is missing drivers, right now it has all necessary drivers and programs, but will windows 10 keep all drivers and programs while upgrading from windows 7; as it did to me ? (when I upgraded to win 10, I had all my programs drivers and files saved, I was amazed to see that I lost practically nothing) .

Sorry for poor English and sorry if I posted in the wrong place. thank you in advance for reading or replying to my post.

Answer:What to expect from windows 10 on a low end pc?

Windows 10 checks for hardware compatibility before it installs itself, if her pc passes the test, then she should be fine.

On my highest spec computer.. to me windows 10 runs faster than windows 8.1 did.

There have been some reports that on lower end laptops, at the moment anyway, windows 10 might not be a good idea.

Hope something helps.

So what’s in this soon-to-be-delivered Windows 7 pre-beta build? Here are a few new features Microsoft will provide, according to various individuals who’ve had a chance to see and hear about the forthcoming PDC pre-beta build.
* Device Stage – a central location for customers to more easily interact with devices, ranging from printers, cameras, cell phones, media players, etc. Device Stage will only recognize “Device-Stage-enabled” peripherals. According to additional info on Microsoft’s WinHEC site, “Device Stage is a new way for consumers to manage, explore, sync, print to, or do other common device-related tasks.
* Action Center — a self-diagnosis feature to help users troubleshoot problems with their Windows 7 systems
* StreamOn — a way to control audio/video content on PCs and devices
* A new animation framework for customizing animations
* New task bar and shell integration
* Multi-touch and gesture recognition — something Microsoft showed off earlier this year in an early Windows 7 preview
* Improved Bluetooth support
* Ribbons, ribbons everywhere. As was evident in the leaked September M3 build, Microsoft is adding its Ribbon UI to the applets that are part of Windows 7. Microsoft also appears to on track to deliver a public beta of Windows 7 by mid-December this year, and final by next year or so. You may also want to check out Windows 7 Pre-release (M3) Privacy Supplement for FULL... Read more

One more good post on Windows 7: Windows 7: Will it be good enough?
Although Microsoft is releasing pre-beta of Windows 7 today at PDC, you might be interested to watch the video of Windows 7 before its release. Yes, Windows 7 preview video is available at Microsoft download center which will give you the glimpse of Windows 7 and its features.
But, before proceeding to Microsoft download center where the Video is available to download, make sure you have genuine Windows operating system as the Windows 7 preview video is available only to customers running genuine Microsoft Windows. In other words, you need to validate your Windows to download video.
Enjoy!! Download Windows 7 preview video

If I were to pull the trigger on a Windows tablet, I think that would be it. Seems like a great compromise of price, performance and features.
I'm keen on Windows RT, but Win 8 would be even better if they can keep the price down and get the battery life up, which it looks like the did with the TPT 2 pretty well with the Atom processor.
Atom seems like a perfect solution because it's able to run Win 8 and it will outperform any ARM SoC and at the same time the newest Atom can just about match the ARM for battery life.
I think the perfect storm will be when the "Bay Trail" Atom's come out later this year. It should mark the first really major upgrade for the Atom architecture. They will have quad core versions, much better onboard graphics and out-of-order execution (the lack of this is probably the biggest reason Atom's real-world performance falls so far short of better processors)
So... NOKIA.. give me a Win 8 tabelt with that Bay Trail Atom in it for under $700 and I will run to the store with a wad of sweaty $100's in my hand the day it goes on sale.
Questions? Comments?

Answer:Thinkpad Tablet 2 looks good

The only potential gotcha is if you ever need to use Hyper-V, say for playing with the Windows Phone 8 emulator, you will be out of luck on an Atom. Curious, since the AMD equivalent runs Hyper-V just fine.
Otherwise, other than a little bit of lag when starting up applications and during web browsing, Windows 8 runs just fine on an Atom, even on the current models. (I expect some of the lag I experence on my netbook isdue to using a standard HDD instead of SDD.)
I think you'll be quite happy trading a little speed for more battery life between charges.

I want to know if this can run PC games at good speeds.
I want to get it now while its on sale if possible

Answer:Is this a good gaming tablet

It's running Windows8 RT, which is the ARM based windows. That means you won't be able to install any normal Windows programs; you'll only be able to install apps from the Windows appstore.

Plus it's only a Tegra 3, which is equivalent to what I have in my Nexus 7. So really it would depend on what kind of games you're wanting to play exactly.

I recently broke my Dell venue pro 8 and am looking for a replacement. Don't want another Venue pro, it was a bit of a hassle when it came to the driver/firmware and the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth never seemed to work right.

Answer:What is a good 7 - 8" tablet to buy?

I'd heard good things about Micro Center's WinBook tablets. (notable for having full size USB)
The ThinkPad 8 is one of the best, albeit, one of the most expensive in the size bracket. (battery life isn't quite as good)
Many of the Venue 8 Pro's competitors are pretty similar, with smaller differentiators. The ASUS Vivotab Note 8 has Wacom stylus support.

Auto-sort line 2 into line 4 based on line 3 - longest to shI have 3 ranges (rows) of data (times). The data is input into row 2, based on the order of row 1 as follows:1 - Departure location (set)2 - Travel time (input)3 - Departure order (longest to shortest) (auto-sorted)I want the row 1 data to be auto-sorted into row 3 based on longest duration to shortest duration in row 2. I think this one has pushed me to the limit of my knowledge and I've been trying to find the answer from dozens of sites, but ... you are my last hope.

Answer:Auto-sort range 1, based on range 2 into range 3

Per the Excel help files:MATCH(lookup_value, lookup_array, [match_type])"The MATCH function searches for a specified item in a range of cells, and then returns the relative position of that item in the range."e.g.
1 21 33 42=MATCH(33,A1:C1,0) would return 2 because 33 is in the 2nd position of the range.e.g.
11 21
12 33
13 42=MATCH(33,D11:D13,0) would also return 2 because 33 is in the 2nd position of the range.MATCH doesn't care about the actual Excel Column or Row because it returns the relative position of the lookup_value within the specified lookup_array, e.g A1:C1 or D11:D13OK, so let's look at the formula I suggested, and break it down. =MATCH(lookup_value, lookup_array, [match_type])=MATCH(LARGE($B$3:$I$3,COLUMN()-1),$B$3:$I$3,0)lookup_value: LARGE($B$3:$I$3,COLUMN()-1)The COLUMN() function returns the Column number in which it resides. e.g. In Column B, COLUMN() will return 2. In Column C, =COLUMNS() will return 3, etc. Therefore in Column B, LARGE($B$3:$I$3,COLUMN()-1) will be equivalent to:=LARGE($B$3:$I$3,1) which will return the longest Travel Time in B3:I3. As you drag that across, the value that COLUMNS() will return will increment by 1, giving you:=LARGE($B$3:$I$3,2) in Column C=LARGE($B$3:$I$3,3) In Column Detc.LARGE returns the actual Travel Time from B3:I3, but we want the Departure Location, right? To solve that we use MATCH.Since MATCH returns the relative position of the looku... Read more

With the launch of Windows 10 less than a week away, here?s what you can expect to find when the operating system launches on July 29. It?s not quite as simple as ?Windows 10 will be available that day.?

Windows Insiders (read: Windows 10 preview testers) will get first dibs when Windows 10 launches on July 29, while everyone else will see a staggered roll out over the following days. In other words, if you haven?t yet ? reserved? your free upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, now would be the time to do so. Microsoft recently began offering reservations through a pop-up message in the Windows notification center.

Microsoft says it will use the rollout to check compatibility and to ?listen, learn, and update the experience for all Windows 10 users.? However, the company notes that ?the vast majority? of PCs running Windows 7 and higher should be fully compatible? though the compatibility checker doesn?t recognize Nvidia?s Windows 10-compatible GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card. As a reminder, all users running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 can get a free upgrade to Windows 10 within a year of the July 29 launch, after which the price will be $119.

With the release of Windows Mobile 10 just around the corner, we haven't heard much about advances in NFC. What can we expect with this version? Will it be more functional and have support for profiles? Will we be able to pay via a banking app for example? Will we catchup to what Android has already? Hopefully there will be a big leap forward in this area.

Answer:Windows 10 Mobile & NFC. What can we expect?

I have similar questions for W10M. I really think there is cool potential for NFC, with tabs, cards, etc. However, Android is superior at this point, because of the ability to connect with the settings and the like... it sure would be nice if I could program a tab to prepare my phone for the car, or whatever... wouldn't that be nice??? Any word on Windows 10 Mobile??

Hey everyone,

I wanted take some time on this last day of 2014 to compile some news sources, rumors and thoughts spreading across the web and start a general discussion to see what the folks here on SF expect or would like to see in Windows in the coming year, with or without regards to Windows 7.

Feel free to add your own thoughts, ideas and stuff to the list, as I will be mentioning the stuff that sparks my interest the most. So here we go!

Windows Internet Explorer 12 Spartan browser?

The most recent bit of news slash rumors regards one of the, arguably, most important piece of software on our devices, and that of course is the web browser. We already heard that IE 12 might be getting a UI overhaul and possibly proper addon support back in September, but as WinBeta reports, Mary Jo Foley is hearing bits and pieces about codename "Spartan", a new and light-weight web browser based on an updated Trident engine (and the "new" Chakra Javascript engine introduced with IE9) that will ship with Windows 10 for both desktops and phones.

Here's where it gets interesting: The new browser is not Internet Explorer 12, as IE will still remain on desktops in Windows 10, and it looks like there's no real answer yet as to how Spartan fits in. But from what I personally can assume/hope/expect, Microsoft is trying to fight both the stigma and the pressure of legacy support in one giant move.

Spartan on the desktop could be the "updated IE" tha... Read more

Answer:Windows in 2015: What Can we Expect?

Hi there

It's amazing that one of the REALLY GREAT features introduced in Windows 8 and carried on in Windows 10 is RARELY mentioned. STORAGE SPACES.

This is much much better than RAID - and you can MIX volume sizes so if you've got a load of say old laptop HDD's or other HDD's around you can AGGREGATE these into a single large storage space. You can have more than ONE storage space if you want and need more space -- dynamically add another HDD.

Really useful too if you start getting things like large multi-media libraries etc. This whole idea fnally gets rid of the Windows idiotic Volume idea of C, D, E etc. I just keep my OS on an SSD as a "classical C: volume and then have TWO sets of storage spaces.

Really does work a treat and is infinitely beeter than libraries too.

For Network sharing just share at the Folder level -- no probs sharing with W7 / XP / Linux etc.

For me the storage spaces idea made a switch to W8 well worth the inconvenience of the lack of a menu (now brought back in W10).

I like the idea also of being able to mount virtual ISO's without using 3rd party software and having the security built into the OS.

W7 was a GREAT system - but like XP it's time to at least THINK about moving on. I'm keeping W7 for a while still - I need some corporate software that won't yet run on W8 / W10.

W10 looks as if it could be a winner - and unlike W8 most users of W7 could run W10 without batting an eyelid.

However whether you remain with W7 or decide even... Read more

Things that must still improve / are still missing:
Full Screen/Immersive Edge (auto-hiding and animated menu bar / address / favourites bar + Swipe Back/Forward, like Metro.IE11);
Official support of TPLs (Tracking Protection Lists) inside Edge settings pane (no need for manual hack);
More customization options both for Desktop Mode and Tablet Mode (independent auto-hide taskbar and Sync between devices for example);
Better Multi-Display support (Tablet Mode on one, Desktop on one other for example);
3+ Snappable Apps in Tablet mode.
Make "Auto-Hide Taskbar" setting independent between Tablet Mode and Desktop mode (with independent Sync between devices);
Bring back gestures from the left and from the top by swiping between app or clossing in task manager by swiping and not only by X;
Give the option to disable the hamburger menu at start screen in tablet mode;
In notification/action center give the option to adjust brightness level from 0-100% just like charm bar;
Give the option completely disable the taskbar at start screen in tablet mode;
Fix the switching language on touch keyboard just like ios/android keyboard behavior;
Enable Swipe Virtual Keyboard like Windows Mobile 10
Enable interactive Live Tiles
Import Metro.IE Web Live Tiles into Edge Web Live Tiles
Improve snapping with mouse while in Tablet Mode.

Hi there. Found this place while trying to find what I was looking for, and seeing as how I wasn't finding anything on my own...well, I figured I'd ask and see if anyone more tech-savvy than me can help out. ^_^;

My mother recently gave me her NextBook as she plans to get a newer tablet soon, and I'm mainly wanting to use it to work on writing some of my novel ideas while at work. The problem however is that there's no word processing program at all on it, and so far I've been unable to find one that is free-to-use and says that it will work on a NextBook (most things are just saying iPad or Android). I don't need anything fancy per say, just something like a word document, perhaps similar to OpenOffice for the PC? Thanks in advance!

Does anybody knows can we expect Windows 7 drivers and utilities for Toshiba Tecra A8 (PTA83E). I'm very satisfied from my laptop, it's working with Win XP, but I want to try Win 7 OS.
10x in advance for replies.

Nikolay Tsankov.

Answer:Tecra A8 - When can I expect drivers for Windows 7?

Hi Nikolay,

If you are satisfied with your laptop I don?t understand why you want to change the OS. You should be happy with preinstalled OS? Never touch a running system ;)

Maybe the Tecra A8 will not support Windows 7 because it?s pretty old. At the moment it seems that Toshiba will not release Windows 7 drivers because I have founded this:

But maybe they will support more notebooks in the future? Who knows

Theoretically you can install Windows 7 but you have to collect the drivers yourself on external websites.

I can't imagine going back to pre-Windows 7 without the 'winkey+right/left' snapping. It makes managing things so much easier for me.

I can't imagine going back to pre Windows 8, with it's new move/copy dialouge box making it so individual files can be paused, and each job is placed neatly in the same window instead of loads of them either covering one another or being all over the screen.

Windows 8.1 itself makes it easier to move files around by moving certain folders into 'My Computer/This PC'. If I move something to This PC/Downloads, the navigation pane doesn't auto expand to C:/Users/Karl/Downloads instead. I only have to visit two areas of the windows explorer navigation pane (This PC and Recycle Bin).

I hope that one day we get the ability to see the file size of a folder as well as files, and perhaps the ability to choose weather that filesize is bytes, kb, mb, gb, tb etc. I'd also kinda like Microsoft Security Essentials aka Windows Defender to return to form, and Windows Movie Maker (pre 'Live' overhaul), just with modernized filetype associations and HD video capabilities.

Answer:What do you want/expect from future versions of Windows?

imho, there is way too much plumbing in the OS now, if all that cack is stripped out and Metro disabled, the OS will be Lightning fast. It IS Lightning fast:

I recently installed ex7forW8, which totally disables the Start Screen by installing Windows 7's Explorer.Exe, which also puts the old Start Menu back in.

I re ran my PC assessment, and it went up from 3.4 to 3.5, so now I have the speed of Windows 8 and the Start Menu of 7. This will not work in 8.1 though.

Hi Windows pals. So, the removal of the BBC iPlayer app from W10 mobile whilst MS are still piddling about not announcing the Surface phone and not mentioning if older devices will be able to update to their latest change of direction has convinced me that there is no point waiting for MS to pull themselves together. Abandoned again, I'm planning on trying something different.
So, I can't stand the idea of an Android mess and the Apple ecosystem is too expensive for me to drop all my Windows devices to move to. I'll stick with MS but I'm going to have to be creative if I'm going to do that. MS is not going to help.

Answer:A good small W10 tablet - Advice needed

(Sorry about 2nd post, but the length limit in the app requires it).
So, I need an easily pocketable tablet with FULL Windows 10 (not mobile) on it. Ideally then 7 inch or as close as possible but with an edge-to-edge screen. Of course, it also needs a 4G (LTE) sim slot and needs to have at least comparable spec to my Lumia 930 (ideally better spec so as to be an upgrade). So, at least 2gig ram (ideally 4gig), at least 32gig internal storage (ideally 64gig, with SD slot), a decent rear camera and an acceptable front camera, and great wifi and Bluetooth. Oh, and good enough sound/mic to use to make standard voice calls via the sim.
The plan is to replace my phone entirely with a tablet. I know there are down sides but now I think less down sides than W10 mobile. So, which do you advise I get? Please, I need good advice here or I'll end up with a right mess and I truly can't stand Android (have an original HTC Wildfire somewhere, what a huge disappointment that was). Which is the best?
