A simple question... it's better 640 or the 640XL? Ergonomy and other question

Question: A simple question... it's better 640 or the 640XL? Ergonomy and other question

My question is simple.
In the past I have used a OnePlus One, but it lack of ergonomy and it have a lot of problem due to lack of android support and horrible touch screen.
Now i'm evaluating the new Lumia 640 and 640XL.
I'm a photograph and i like smartphone that make very good photos.
I'm near to buy a XL for the better camera (13MP) and Zeiss Lens, but i'm undecided....
- it's too big the 640XL? Is good the ergonomy? Or is better loss some quality of the camera... and go with basic 640?
After some week of OnePlus... i had pain to hand for the bad ergonomy of this phone.
I have tried 640 and 640 XL into a shop, but I think that ergonomy can be tested only in daily use.
What is your suggestion and experience? And if you suggest "basic" 640 i will lost a big amount of quality due to the 8 MP camera?
Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: A simple question... it's better 640 or the 640XL? Ergonomy and other question

Would you consider a Lumia 830?
The 10 MP, Zeiss Lens, PureView, OIS shooter is very nice. Very nice. It surprises many, including Lumia purists.
The size and feel of the device may be more in line with what you want ergonomically.

I've been looking all around the internet for 2 months for my answer, yet I haven't been able to do this. It seems simple to me. Why can't I find an answer for this question...

How do you re-format the C drive?

It seems at least simple to me. That's all I want to so. I have two paritions, C and D. C is my system partition, and install Windows XP Pro on it. That's all. In XP setup, it will not let me format it, so to me in theory, I'm at a dead end. So I've installed XP on the C drive three times, all in the same folder, and now it has taken up 10 GB (why?) of space when it only should take no more than 4.

Hello all,
This is truely a "no brainer" for most, but I'm baffled. Here's the deal.

I have Win XP (SP2) installed with IE 5.?

I've tried to install IE 6 in the past but was unable to because of difficulties at the microsoft update site.

My question is, what is the latest IE version that can be used with SP2 and could someone provide a link to the proper update page from microsoft? Thanks for the help

The clock on my PC loses time, I have gathered from other discussions that the answer is to change the battery on the Main board. As a user and not a computer techy - will the removal of this existing battery destroy all the settings on my board (obviously I will take all anti-static precautions. Thank you in anticipation of a postive answer and a hassle free change of this battery. The board by the way is a K7VZA made by "AMR"

Yes you will loose the settings in the BIOS this shouldn't be a problem. May be a good idea to write them all down first.A better title to the thread would've made getting an answer even simpler!

I recently reinstalled Windows 2000 on my family's laptop here, so that it wouldn't run so sluggishly slow on Windows XP with only 256 MB of RAM. Now, I've run into a peculiar problem that's router based. I'm running my sister's system with Windows XP and this laptop on the same network at their apartment. However, the Linksys BEFSR41 4-port switch is assigning each computer the same IP address, causing conflict. Is there a way in the router settings to easily and manually assign each computer a separate IP address? I'm fairly confident that Cox Communications provides 3 IP addresses for each owner of their cable internet services.

Hey, this is my first post here so I thought i'd make it simple.

I recently just bought a 500gb external HD and I just transfered all of my D drive(111gb) over to it. Now with my D drive cleared I want to install windows vista ultimate on my D, and keep my Xp on My C drive. So I'm asking the steps I need to take in order to Dual Boot my windows XP and my future windows Vista with both on differnt drives.

Answer:Simple question, want simple answer

This is fairly easy:

0 - Yes, step 0. Make sure you have all the drivers you'll need (motherboard, video, sound, NIC, etc.). Vista should recognize your motherboard/controllers. The rest you can store in a folder on your external drive.

1 - Shut down and disconnect your external drive

2 - Boot to your Vista DVD

3 - Follow the prompts, and when asked where to install, select the D drive. Double check your choice before continuing!

4 - Allow Vista to format it NTFS

5 - Vista will handle the boot loader (where you can choose on power-up which OS to go with)

For the most part, Vista will do everything.

I was typing out a song, in wordpad, that I had written, which included letters above each line to show which chord was to be played at which time. I went to print the document and the printed page has the spacing for the chords off. I noticed this happened if you used either a different font or different size for the verse and the chords. To give you an exampe:

A--------C--------D
blah blah blah blah blah

would become:

A---------------C-----------D
blah blah blah blah blah

Obviously the simple fix is to use one font and size for the whole document, but out of curiousity, why is this happening? I played around with it a lot, and was always getting a printed page that had significantly different spacing that what was being shown on the screen, including print preview. I'm sure this is really simple for somebody, but I am not familiar with why it is happening.

P.S. I had to include the hyphens to illustrate my point because this wasn't handling the space issue well either.

Answer:simple question about wordpad, maybe too simple

Wordpad doesn't have very advanced formatting options in its code. its a small step above notepad, which has only basic formatting (spacing) as a simple text editor. Different fonts have slightly different character spacing. since Wordpad is a pretty basic text editor, it doesn't have character spacing formatting in its code, and spacing is read from the font alone.

When simple text without much formatting is sent to the printer, the printer reads the font and outputs the spacing based on the font.

simply put, both the printer and wordpad interpret the font spacing differently.

Question: Simple Question

Is it possible to run task manager as a service, so it won't be on the screen or minimized but it will be in the sys tray?

Answer:Simple Question

In Windows XP, Task-manager is already in the system tray running as a service. To get to it, just right click on the task bar and choose it from the menu.

If your Windows platform doesn't have this option in the system tray, you can do a search for the "taskmgr.exe" file. Then just drag & drop the one whose location is in the system32 folder to the "Quick Launch" folder (C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch). All you have to do then is click on the icon in the Quick Launch if your Quick Launch is enabled!

Hi all,
Does anybody happen to know what command I should be using in a batch file to open a file with a program other than the default for that extension? Or alternatively, as a workaround, how to set the default for a given extension in a batch file and then set it back again?
Specifically I'm working with a program that has multiple .cfg files for when I'm doing various things, so I'm trying to make batch files to open the appropriate one at the appropriate time but want to leave notepad as the default program to open them for ease of editing.
Thanks,
Simon

Answer:Simple .bat question

Hello Simon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could use this in the BAT file to open a file with a supported program of your choice.

start "Full path to .exe of program" "Full path of file with extension"

For example, to open a .txt file in Wordpad.

start "C:\Windows\write.exe" "C:\Users\(user-name)\My Documents\My text file.txt"

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Is leaving your computer on for long amounts of time, like all night, bad for the computer in any way, shape, or form? cuz i dont really feel like coming up with money to fix it if it screws up on me..thanks

Answer:Simple Question

You pose a good question. A simple question with a simple answer.

No it will not harm your computer. I leave mine on all the time. Just set it to where the main hardware shuts off after a hour or so and it runs on little energy.

It will over time make it slower. You will need to restart often maybe once a day or so is good. That is how I do mine and have done it for a while now. Just give it a restart here and there and your set.

I know hibernation comes in handy on Xp so if you want to shut your computer down and restart fast later it comes up a whole lot faster.

Hope this helps on your question.

I have recently started downoading photos and copying photos of my own to disc. I have noticed that the photos come with diferent strings attached to their file names such as JPEG , TIF etc. What exactly do these strings signify?

Answer:Maybe a simple question

A primer is here:
http://www.wfu.edu/~matthews/misc/graphics/formats/formats.html

The "strings" are the type of file it is. Referred to as file types, they are also known as file extensions.

JPEG (jpg) is a compressed file format, which has smaller diles but sme quality loss.
It is usual to send emaied photos as a .jpg file as they could be too large otherwise.

.TIFF is a non-compressed format, as is .BMP

Note that you cannot change file types by renaming the extension, it has to be done with image conversion software

Or the only one that bugs me i guess. what would cause the fonts to be different?

Answer:simple IE question.

Hello in4pain!

First, I'm assuming you have Internet Explorer. Go to tools, click Internet Options. On the General tab, at the bottom right click Accessibility. Under Formatting, is "Ignore Font Styles Specified on Web Pages" checked? If it isn't and the webpage is using a font your computer can't display then it will show it in the default system font. Also try the "Ignore Font Sizes Specified on Web Pages". Rule of Thumb: If you don't have a font, you can't see it.

Also in Internet Options > General > Fonts you can specify a font to be displayed if a Webpage doesn't specify one.

Hope this helps.

In the week after this happened i read many articles all over the web concerning "security settings" on my XP -- home ed. In changing them around, I have developed a couple of problems...I keep getting a scripts page when opening Outlook, my McAfee screen is blank, and a couple of others.

My hopefully simple question is what are the "default" settings that originally come with the program, especially concerning Active X and scripts.

Be sure there is free flow of air around it even if you need to move something to another slot. And be sure the flow of air in and out of the computer case is not impeded.

Hey all,

I have wireless built into my DSL Endpoint (modem), its also a basic switch. (Zoom X6)
I'd like to hook up my 2nd computer, Xbox, and PS2 in the Living room wirelessly to the internet, and the network.

Is there a single device I can get to do this? I'd like all 3 on the network, without running any wires, and at the cheapest price.

Now, I am not afraid to pay for quality, I'd just rather set up one device, cause I am lazy

Answer:A Simple (Hopefully) Question

Look for something called a "wireless ethernet bridge" and you'll find what you want. Basically, one end plugs into your existing switch/hub and sends a signal to the other end which decodes the signal and turns it back into a physical signal to which you can plug in a device (good ones you can plug back into a wired switch and go nuts). You're not going to find a wireless repeater like what you want unless you haxxor some Linksys (or other) router with DD-WRT for less than, well...a lot of money.

Question: Simple question...

Please help out with a simple question of mine:

I've just bought a new computer and I want to add it to the existing office network. I have all the correct cables, etc, and the new computer is up and running fine, but I can't see where I add it to the network. I know I am close as I can access the internet on the new computer through another computer already in the network. I just can't see anywhere showing me the existing network, and giving me the option to add another computer to it! Where am I going wrong??

I've finally gotten around to get DSI and tossed the old dial-up at home. I have a desktop and laptop computer that I use, either one or the other, but never both at the same time. I have the DSI connected by cable modem to my desktop -- works just fine. I would like to connect at times my laptop to browse and get software updates.

Should I be able to unplug the Ethernet cable from my desktop pc and plug it into the laptop like I was able to do with the dial-up telephone wire? I tried doing this with the Ethernet cable and it didn't work so I'm not sure if something else needs to be done. When I connected the Ethernet cable from the modem to the laptop nick card, the laptop sees the DSI modem, but the software I got from my provider, Verizon, says it can't connect to the network. I can connect to the network just fine when I use the desktop. I have heard about Routers and Switches and don't know if I need one or can just move the cable? Obviously, I would like to not have to buy this extra stuff. Am I correct that I can just move the cable? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Simple DSI Question

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Also, please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

What is the name of the program that makes windows shortcut look like Mac ones?
I know this has been mentioned many times, but i cant seem to be able to find it.

Answer:simple question

You'd be referring to a program such as StyleXP or WindowBlinds, but the program itself isn't what makes the icons look like Mac ones. That depends upon whatever Theme or Skin you apply using the program.

Question: simple CD question

i went out the other day to get some rerecordable CDs and i was flooded with a range of all different types from CD-r to DVD=RW duel layer, in the end i managed to find out what everything was but the one thing that confused me most was, i have been told there is no difference between CD-R and CD+R, surely there must be a diference soemwhere!!
what is the + and the - for and what do they mean? is one better than the other?

Answer:simple CD question

Do you mean DVD-R and DVD+R?

yes there are differences, its like saying VHS and Betamax are/were the same!

DVD - & + are different writing formats that emerged and are still being argued over as to which is the best so these days to avoid any consumer confusion most manufacturers produce dual format writers that can write in both - and + ( but some writer can only write in minus if its a - drive so if you bought a + disk it woulnt work and vice versa )

CD types and by no means a comprehensive listing....

CDR ~ Write once
CDRW ~ Write and Erase many times

DVD-R ~ Write once
DVD+R ~ Write once
DVD-RW ~ Write and Erase many times
CVD+RW ~ Write and Erase many times
( These have a 4.7gb limit )

then you goto Dual layer DVD types which burn upto 8.5gb

Question: simple question

if microsoft security updates, and finds a new def, why does that show up as an optional update? shouldnt it b a recomended update? they usaly r,

Answer:simple question

Hi jasond19,

I checked my own update history for Microsoft Security Essential definitions and found some to be recommended and some to be optional (and there were more optional than I had expected). I'm not certain why - perhaps it has to do with the severity of the malware involved in the new definitions or whether or not it's a minor update to a reasonably good existing definition versus a major change to the definition or the addition of a new one. Frankly, I honestly don't know but I install all such updates whether recommended or optional (and suggest you do the same) to keep MSE as current and up-to-date and effective as possible. EDIT: See Richard's response below, that's the difference between the two and I imagine it is determined by Microsoft as I just explained.

I hope this helps even if it isn't a definite answer but more like an educated guess. The main point is that it is best and recommended to install all MSE definition updates no matter how they are classified.

Good luck!

Hello everyone. I am a newcomer to the W7 forum and would really appreciate an answer to the following question.
Currently I'm using Windows Vista Home Edition which I do not like. I am going to upgrade to W7 Home Edition (clean install) but I'm confused as to which version of W7 to get. There are 2 versions of for sale: one is W7 Anytime retailing at about ?55, and the other is simply W7 Home Edition retailing at about ?85.
In spite of reading the information about each product, I can't see which I have to buy in order to perform a clean install. By comparison with what I have read in the forum, this is a pretty crass question, but I do need advice!
Many thanks,
Les

Answer:Really simple question

Welcome
The cheaper one is basically an upgrade.
If you have Vista you want the upgrade version. .
Buy and upgrade DVD and do a clean install, Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version[2]=General Tips
Anytime upgrade is just that an upgrade, you want a clean install with an upgrade DVD.

I am running WinXP Home. Is there a way to default the "View" for the folders to what I want, and keep it that way?

For example: I want the View to remain at "Tiles" for my docs folder and "Thumbnails" for my pics folder. When I set it up that way, it will stay for a while, but for whatever reason at some point, usually within a reboot or two, it reverts back to the "Icons" view. Especially for the folders within the main folder.

I thought that Windows remembers the last configuration and keeps it as such.

Thanks.

Answer:A Simple Question <perhaps>

Fixed I think.

Tools > Folder Options > View > Remember Each Folders Settings.

Question: a simple question

I've always wondered how safe it is to select the 'remember me' button when logging onto the website of a credit card or my bank. If I bypassed typing in my username/password with this option is there any way someone could use it against me easily? I know almost anything is possible on the web, in terms of hacking and such, but is it relatively safe?

Thanks,
JTN

Answer:a simple question

Safe is relative, I am not positive, but pretty sure that most https sites won't store passwords anyway.

Personally I wouldn't store them, even with a good secure password, (check your potential password here) and a good firewall

I copied this code directly from a book written by the professor of my C++ Programming I class. I am not sure exactly what is wrong with the program because it will execute, but it will not carry out all of its specified functions. Does anything in the below coding appear to be wrong or misplaced?

#include <iostream.h>
#include <conio.h>

int main()
{
int number, product, power = 1;

cout << "Enter a number between 2 and 100: ";
cin >> number;
cout << endl;

while (number > 100 || number < 2)
{
cout << "Your number is out of range." << endl;
cout << "Enter a number between 2 and 100: ";
cin >> number;
cout << endl;
}

product = number;

do {
product = product * number;
power = power + 1;
} while(number < 10000);

cout << power << " is the first power of " << number
<< " that is larger than 10,000 and equals "
<< product << endl;

getch();

return 0;
}
Thanks for taking the time to look through this, and thanks for any help provided. Take care.

Answer:A Simple C++ Question...

Looks like the book is too old.

I did not check that the answer for every number in the range you input comes out correct, but try this:
Code:

#include <iostream>

using namespace std;

int main() {
int number;
for (bool valid = false; !valid; ) {
cout << "\n" << "Enter a number between 2 and 100: ";
cin >> number;
if (number > 2 && number < 100) {
valid = true;
} else {
cout << "\n" << "Your number is out of range." << endl;
}
}
int product = number;
int power = 1;
while (product < 10000) {
product *= number;
++power;
}
cout << "\n" << power << " is the first power of " << number
<< " that is larger than 10,000 and equals "
<< product << endl;
}

Just remember, it's a command line program and you should run it at the command line instead of double-clicking it.

As is right now, if you input a bunch of letters, the program will crash

As a tip, it's safer to input the number as a string, validate it and then convert it to a int. You can do that all in one function.

#include <string>

string x;
int number = getValidNumber();

Of course, I'll leave it up to you to write the getValidNumber() function if you ever want to get pic... Read more

Question: Simple Question(s)

I have a bad hard drive (constantly re-boots machine, tested in another and does the same) and was curious if it's still possible to transfer (ghost, if you will) the info to another drive without complications? There is some valuable info on this drive that I need to recover and figured this was the best and most inexpensive way to go about it. Also, if transferring IS possible can it be done to an unformatted drive or would if have to be done to a drive with a matching O.S.?

I'm assuming it's the mechanics of the drive causing the problem however if anyone has any further imput I would be greatly appreciative.

Hi.

Intel? Desktop Board DP55WB — System memory
answer: yes =P

as for not getting to post all it takes is a bad harddrive / dvd drive to "lock up" and not post, so it can be way more than the cpu or memory causing it. Did you try leaving off all the sata ports ( harddrives, cd drives ) and just run using cpu/ motherboard and ram?

Hi,
I have a question about Windows XP Pro's ASR (Automated System Recovery), while I do know all about how to create one and how to restore in case of major failure, I want to know if by any way the backup created could be somehow compressed to save hard drive space.

As far as I know, I have searched through Backup's options and couldn't find a way to do it and the problem is that I can't do the backup anyway else (eg: WinRAR to create a compressed RAR file) since NTBACKUP.EXE is apparently the only program that can control the Volume Shadow Copy service to copy actively running files...

Is there any way to do it ? (ie: create a compressed ASR backup - or at least a compressed backup of the XP partition while running XP itself somehow ?)

Any suggestions ? Thanks ...

Question: Simple Question(s)

Have you ever had something that should be so easy to do. But, for some reason you have a complete brain freeze and the easy thing turns into a mind blowing experience??? I have reached that crossroad!!!!

I have read through some posts below concerning networking two computers. Just in case I might have missed something easy...but it did not help..

Win XP Home to Win 2000 Professional
AOL Broadband connection(cable)
Linksys 4 port router

Keep in mind that at one time this all worked great!!! I was able to browse both internet and files from either computer. Then one of their children got on one of PCs and screwed everything up...here are the symptoms...

Computer A is the XP machine
Computer B is the 2000 machine..

A browses the internet with no problems. The PC is shared out so that computer B can access any files located on computer A. Both of these PCs are a member of "WORKGROUP".....we obtain IPs automatically(of course)..

Now the odd things...Computer B cannot browse out to the internet nor can it see computer A. But, it can see the router. As stated,computer A can browse the internet...but cannot see the router(confused yet??? I sure am).

As many networks as I have set up, I cannot for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong. If I had this setup working before...why in the world can I not get it back the way it was??? I'm going out of my mind!!!

If anyone needs more information please let me know....

Thanks,
Ty
