I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Check your drive for errors and run scanpst.exe on your pst's and ost files. Generally this is one of the signs of a corrupt mail database which is why Microsoft has been pushing for a few years now to get rid of them.
Other possibility is with the temporary file store location. You can find a write up about it here. Outlook could not create the work file

I have Outlook 2010 and Windows 8.1.  When attempting to open e-mail in Outlook 2010 or documents in Word I get the following error:
"Outlook could not create the work file.  Check the temp environment variable."
I've read several Microsoft KB articles and several forums on this issue.  According to these articles, This problem occurs when the Cache string value in the registry doesn't point to a valid directory.  The solution provided is to:
Locate and then click the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Right-click the Cache key, and then click Modify.  Then modify the sting value to:  %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache
When performing this step, the cache value was already set to the value above.  I attempted to overwrite by typing the same value for the string, but that did not solve the problem.  I attempted to change it to a different value, save it, and then
modify it to the correct value and save it, but that did not solve the problem.  I also attempted to go in to the INetCache folder under Users\"user"l\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache, rename it, recreate a new folder and copy all subfolders
into it, and that did not solve the problem.
I am out of things to try from the user forums I have researched.  Appreciate any insight anyone might have on how I can solve this problem.

I'm getting two similar error messages when I try to open both Outlook and Word....

(Outlook / Word) could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable.

Outlook is not opening at all, and Word will open at the second or third "OK" click on the error message.

I've spent the last 24 hours editing the registry, for both programs based on advice found online, but nothing has worked.

I'm using the Office 2013 versions of both programs (version 15 Outlook). Could someone offer me any suggestions as to how the registry should look for both programs please, as this is preventing em from working (I'm self employed and use both programs all the time).

I saw that there's a workaround using IE, but it's not on my computer (only Edge). This keeps crashing when I try to open it, and I can't seem to get a download of IE, as Microsoft assume I have it already.

I tried a system restore several times but for some reason it won't work - I was even so desperate to fix it. I tried resetting the OS, but this also failed (I have no idea why).

Add this to the problems of saving files in Word caused by Windows 10, and I have to say that for me, it wasn't a good choice to upgrade.

Any help on this would be very welcome.

Stephen

Answer:Outlook and Word "Could not create the Work File" Errors

Sorry I won't be a lot of help but, at least, I can tell you you DO have Internet Explorer. Left click the windows or search icon bottom left corner and type internet explorer. The program link appears so rt click and then click pin to taskbar.

But there really does seem to be corruption somewhere as your problems would certainly not be typical.

Tell us about your computer and how you did the upgrade (or downgrade in your case!). How do you log in? Local or MS login?

I would also run chkdsk.exe on your drive so its file structure can be checked/corrected. To do this rt click the windows icon then left click 'Command prompt(admin'. A black box will pop up. Type chkdsk c: /f then hit enter. Next respond with a y for yes then restart your comp. On boot it should do the disk check.

Hopefully others may chime in but if it is a permissions problem, as this appears to be, it may be tricky to solve as who knows what else is wrong?

Good luck.

Hi All. Two issues that may be related?

1) after upgrading to Win 10 (I use office 365) I can no longer Drag & Drop a file into a message body, but it will allow by using the "attach file" tool in Outlook 2013.

2) the Windows Desktop Search is no longer active making those fast, live searches available, like searching thru my Sent folder. The Add In is disabled but when I enable it, and restart Outlook, it goes back to being a disabled Add In

Answer:cannot "drag & drop" file attachment into Outlook 2013 in Win 10

You were probably trying to drop a file that was too large for your email provider to send. I just dropped a file into an email and sent it to myself, it worked. But I'm limited to 10mb it seems, Apple Email acct. So check your settings, see if you might have tripped any permissions that deny dropping a file into an email.

As far as desktop search, try starting Cortana, once it changes to a circle, then you can right click on it and up at the top it says "Cortana>Show Search Box" click that to get your search box back.

(Edit) actually, no, it's not the same search box from pre-Cortana. I had a Search Box there, when I started Cortana, it took over that area.

Greetings,

Recently we have migrated an entire overseas division over from a very old computer system to brand new VDI/VMware-based system. This, of course, includes importing PSTs (POP3) into their Exchange mailboxes.

What we're trying to do is find out if there are any missing e-mails ... by sorting by Received Date and scrolling down. Thing is, most of the users have dozens of folders. It would be impossible for us to find if they're missing e-mails like this unless we could get a view that would show all e-mail messages from all folders.

I did try the Advanced Search with blank fields and selecting the mailbox + checking to search subfolders as well, but it concatenates the total number of results to some several dozen results, so this is no good.

Any ideas?

Today, 25 Aug 2016, my Windows 10 PC loaded Outlook 2013 and at the same time I received the following message:

Thinking the message to be genuine, a file was downloaded called OneDriveSetup.exe which was some 8Mb in size.
Is or was this update genuine?

I have since deleted the file as a precaution. Checking this further, I find that in folder:
C:\Users\Mr Morgan\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\Update
There are two new files called:
OneDriveUpdate.exe which is 20Mb and the other is an .xml file called update.xml.
Are these files genuine?

Answer:Starting Outlook 2013 message: OneDrive "An update is required"

FWIW, I have the two files (one 20MB) as you described in the ...OneDrive\Update folder. They are the real deal.

MS Exchange server with our own mailbox.
11 clients, all Win7, with mixture of Office 2013 and 365.
WE share calendar and directory (oops call it "People" now)
Issues with the Shared People list acting up:
Somehow the address book (?People?) Groups do not want to cooperate, AND the ?TO? dialog box on new emails. This is occurring on multiple computers.

Open new email
Click ?TO?
Scroll to B Group and add to email
Right click on group to open/expand
Failure message: = The name or contact group has been deleted and is no longer a valid address book entry. The attempted operation failed. An object could not be found.
I tried to delete the group and recreate under AMAG contacts
Opened up group and was able to add only one person. It did not find the others.
Add members Failure = the dialog box with email addresses does not find individuals requested
On a new email: the ?TO? dialog box fails to find names. I even went to People, resaved the contacts after opening them to try and fix a contact.
Using the ?TO? dialog box appears not to have names beginning with H,P,Q,R Also some random names. I am looking for Gloria Nnnn. She is on the People list, but does not appear in the ?TO? dialog box. Seems as if there are no names above GENE ... (names above GE..)

We can work around this but it is an issue with the software.
Any ideas?

Hi there ... (hope my english is not to bad) ...

I have a Team of 5 people. Each team meber has its own email-adress / email account. Customers can reach individuall members by the individuall email- or the whole team by the email-list "CM-Mngt". So far so good.

Problem:If anyone replys to a customer (via his individuall email account), he puts the whole team in "cc", so that they are infomend.
But if the customer replies, most of the time they only reply to the one teammember. If this teammeber is of sick / vaction, the rest of the team stay?s in the "dark".

Looking fo a solution:Is it possible to configure the Outlook-Server / Account that way that:
Each teammeber is able to send either as him self, or to send an email with "Send-As", using n special/extra Email account called i.e. "CM-Mngt".
This CM-Mngt" account should only be able to SEND emails and does (should) not have an IN-Box.
If someone replies to on of the "CM-Mngt" Emails, Outlook should than use the Email-Mailinglist "CM-Mngt" to distribute the email to all teammeber individually (therefore the "CM-Mngt" account does not have an In-Box).
Would that maybe be possible with rule such as "if ryply button is used = always replay to email-list "CM-Mngt" and not Eamil-Account "CM-Mngt".

Thanks for your help
Cheers

I have installed Outlook (which looks more like OE than Live mail, perhaps) and started using it. I am fairly happy. The only thing that bugs me is that it starts up with two windows and two tabs, one of which is the calendar functionality. I can close that down again but it is a pain. Is there a way of executing Outlook so that only Inbox appears? I want to disable the calendar completely and never see it again.

I use an online, cloud computing, calendar since I have many computers and waiting for calendars to synchronise is something I can do without.

Hello. I am using a POWER USER account, Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 /w all the latest patches availible via microsoft update. I was trying to create a .zip file of a folder within the primary directroy of a backup hard drive I use.

For Example:
D:\stuff - I wanted to make a zipfile of the folder "stuff."

Then I get the following error "Cannot Create Output File."

However, if I move the folder to the destop or a subdirectory i.e. stuff/more stuff, then the .zip file is created with no problems.

Also, because user accounts [at least in my experience] have a tendency to decay, I created a freash power user account and the same problem persist.

Is this a standard security feature for power user accounts? Is there anyway I can "disable" it if it is?

Thank You.

Well, it works just fine internally, but if someone outside our company sends any of our users that has "out of the office" function enabled an email he/she won't recieve the OOTO message.. I often receive emails from my Pet Lover community that have images embedded in the body. I have a special email folder on my desktop into which I used to be able to download the pictures by selecting "view in browser" from my Outlook 2007 menu bar. Google Chrome would display all the images and I would download from there.

All of a sudden, when I select that command, all I get is text. It's almost as if I am looking at the source. I've uploaded a .doc file with the screen shot of what I get from that command.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know I could copy each and paste into Paint, then crop, save, etc., etc.. I simply don't have the time for all the extra steps.

Thanks.

I was wondering if there was any way for me to completely take away the option to "Work Offline" in Outlook. I would prefer it if that option was not even made available. If anyone know how this can be done I would really really like to know.

Answer:Disable "Work Offline" in Outlook

The reason that I want to completely do away with it is that I work at a High School and I am the Network Technician here. A lot of teachers keep somehow selecting "Work Offline" and then calling me saying that none of their emails are going through. We just had one teacher call and tell us that for the last 2 days no one has been recieving his emails he has been sending and the whole reason was because he has selected "Work Offline" by accident.

Here's one for you Outlook gurus. I have talked to a lot of people about this (including 2 Outlook trainers), and they cannot figure it out. I am about at the end of my rope...

Here's the challenge:

A new entry is put into the Outlook 2000 calendar (double click on the time of the event.)
In that window, there is a drop down menu, which is marked "show time as." In that drop down menu, "busy" is chosen.

After the entry is completed and saved, that date does NOT show in bold, on the calendar pane. Instead, there is a grey box around that date.
When clicking on the "attendee availability" tab, the newly entered calendar event, does not even show up. I know the event has been saved, as it DOES show up in the calendar pane (with a grey box around it - not bolded, as it should be.)

Now, here is the weird part-
The entries that I am having problems with, were done in the last week or so. If I enter one right now, it will appear correctly. This only seems to be happening with older dates I have already entered.
Also, if the "show time as" drop down menu is set to "out of office", saved, then set back to "busy", the date will now show correctly.
This is a community calendar which is used by more than one person.

This problem is causing events to be scheduled at the same time, as Outlook is not recognizing when events have already been scheduled for certain dates.

All of a sudden I could not find my sent mails in the Sent Items Folder. I looked for help from the forums and got a suggestion to create another profile to test whether I can see my sent mails there. I followed the instructions but there was not enough to lead me through so I don't think I completed creating a profile. Then I got another suggestion to purchase the Registry Booster to clean up my registry. After I did that I was able to see my sent mails again.

However I still continue to see the Outlook Data File Popup with the message "This data file has not been configured. Select an existing file to configure or try the name of a new file to create". After I clicked "OK" then I got another pop up to prompting me to choose a file from the Libraries.Documents directory. I clicked "Cancel" then I got another pop up with "Properities for this data file must be defined prior to use". I clicked "OK" and then I got the Outlook Data File Popup and the same subsequent popups again. After clicking through I was able to start my Outlook but when use the registry Booster to scan I got more error messages. So apparently these errors from Outlook is mucking up my registry. Anyone has any idea about this problem? Please help. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Helen.

Answer:Outlook 2010 Error message "This data file has not been configured"

Hi Helen,

Firstly, you certainly do not need any registry boosters to solve Outlook data file issues - was this a recommendation made by someone, or was this suggested to you by an automated pop-up? If its the latter, is there any chance you could be infected by some sort of malware?

To solve the Outlook issue, do you know where your Outlook data file is being stored? Can you do a search on your computer for all files with this extension:

.pst

Post back here with your findings. Also, can you tell us about your current system : what anti-virus software are you using. I'm a bit concerned about this Registry Booster : generally speaking, in most cases you really do not need/want to be mucking with the registry at all.

Regards,
Golden

Normally when you try to send an email from a link from firefox via "file->send link", your default email program automatically opens assuming it's not already open. If Outlook 2010 is already open, no problem; it works fine. If it's closed, I get the error below about a dll error telling me to reinstall outlook 2010. if I manually open Outlook, I can then email the link.

If I insert the Office 2010 disc to try a repair, I get an other error (below) saying 2003 was not uninstalled properly and to uninstall it before I can do the repair (gotcha-catch22-can't get there from here, etc....). I see nothing in add/remove to indicate there is a trace of Office 2003 remaining. I can send screen shots of the registry if desired, but see nothing there indicating 2003 was not removed fully, but could be wrong. I'm fine with surgical edits if necessary.

I've been running Office 2010 for a year with no other problems beyond this and it's possible this existed from day 1 and it just took me a while to notice it..

Any suggestion on how to either fix the dll issue directly, or deal with the 2003 uninstall hopefully without uninstalling 2010 and starting over?

Thanks.

If you have lots of e-mails this process can take quite some time to finish (it takes almost an hour on my PC if this happens). It might be worth leaving for a little while and see if it kicks back in to life

You could also try the Inbox Repair Tool, which is called SCANPST.EXE and located on your Office folder. If you have Office 2007 then it's probably in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12". It might be worth backing up your e-mails before running this though, just in case.

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

Thanks in advance

Hey TSG,

STATISTICS:

Windows XP SP2 with all updates
MS Office 2003 with all updates
Windows is set up with 3 user profiles - error only occurs on "administrator"

PC appears to be clean: I run SPYBOT and AdAware regularly, and CCleaner and Registry Mechanic occasionally. I use fully updated Trend Micro PC-cillin Virus Protection and firewall.

PROBLEM:

For no apparent reason, when I open Outlook I get the message "Data file 'Personal Folders' was not closed properly. The file is being checked for problems" .....pause

...and then Outlook closes. (NOTE: any recommended solution that requires Outlook to be open cannot be applied). I have researched the Web forums and one suggestion was that the .pst file is too large. I back up the .pst file every night and last night's file was 352 meg which does not seem to be too big.

HELP!

Thanks,

kurley

PS: I can get e-mail on-line

Answer:Outlook 2003 - Error "Data File 'Personal Folders' was not closed properly"

Well the good news is that your .pst file is not too large... the maximum limit for previous versions of office .pst files was 2 GB... usually corruption occurs before this point though (post 1.5 GB is about the point where it becomes prominent), and with the new office 2003 4TB is the theoretical limit of your PST files.

One thing to try... move the location (into another folder) of your .pst file, so that the association of the outlook and the pst file is broken... see if this allows you to open outlook... if so try to remap to the .pst file in its new location, close outlook and see if the issue has been resolved or if it fails to open again.

If you are able to open outlook (with the pst disconnected) and the previous step has failed try using the import/export function and see if you can import your .pst file from the old (corrupted one) to a new one...

There are utilities out there that are able to check the integrity of .pst files, but right at the moment... it escapes me as to which are the recommended scanners.

Other suggestions are welcome...

I just installed Outlook 2010 on my new Samsung laptop running Windows 7 a few days ago (an upgrade from Outlook 2002 that I was previously using on my old computer running XP). My husband & I have 4 different email accounts, so I started configuring all of them on the new version & it all seemed to be working fine. Last night my husband moved our saved emails, etc., from our old computer to the new one. At first everything went smooth. All the stuff we still had on the old pc showed up in all the right places in our new inboxes. Once he was finished, we tested send/receive several times & it was all working fine. That is, until this morning...

After powering up the laptop & starting Outlook, I've discovered that all email accounts work EXCEPT our main account. This is the error message I keep getting:

Sending' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'Outlook data file cannot be accessed.'
Receiving' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'Outlook data file cannot be accessed.'

I used one of our other email accounts that work to send my husband an email showing him the error. He has no idea how to fix it & I have tried to find an answer online & can't. Can anyone (as if you're talking to a child) explain to me how to fix this problem? Thanks.

outlook is also on my smart phone, but those same people are not getting emails sent from the phone nor do I get their replies on the phone. Others get them and answer them no problem. ??

URLs embedded in received messages in Outlook 2007 give the error "The system cannot find the file specified". If I cut and paste the URL into a browser, it works fine. The URL is apparently not being passed to the default browser (IceDragon). I tried making Opera the default browser, but that didn't help.

I have Outlook on multiple systems and once a week I copy the .pst file from my office computer to my primary home computer so they have the same emails, address book (OAB), contacts, calendar and tasks. This has worked flawlessly over the past 15 or so years for all versions of Outlook - until now.I recently upgraded to Office 2010 and when I copy the .pst file everything is fine EXCEPT that all favorites in the email module are missing and I need to drag the folders up from the bottom pane and recreate them. The "favorites" view IS enabled and "Favorites" a does appear at the top left, it's simply empty. This obviously isn't a major issue but it is a bit annoying. Wondered if anyone has any thoughts on this. Again, it only happened after installing Outlook 2010 a month or so ago. Thanks

New Dell 530 computer, new Office Pro package installed by Dell. Everything works pretty smoothly so far, but every time I open Outlook (not Outlook Express), I get a message "A data file did not close properly the last time it was used and is being checked for problems. Performance might be affected while the check is in progress." I can still check email, appointments, etc, but it works in the background and sometimes interferes with the keyboard or mouse. And if the program is open long enough, it reports a message "data file check complete." It's not a huge issue but is very annoying. Any ideas?

Hi,

I use Outlook 2002 SP3 extensively. I enable the "autocomplete' feature which fills in the email address automatically after the first 3 digits. Nice feature, but sometimes if you accidentally mis-spell the name, or the person moves to a different company, you can end up with many names for one person and some of them are wrong. Outlook seems to store these "autocomplete" names in some file, and not in the Address Book that can be found under "tools". In fact, may of the names aren't in there. When you reply to a message to anyone, that email address then becomes part of this "autocomplete" listing.

It's a nice feature, but I need to be able to go in and modify the file to delete or edit incorrect email addresses, so I don't accidently send it to a bogus address when in a rush. Can someone tell me where to find this file, and how to edit it correctly.

thanks,.

Answer:Outlook's hidden "autocomplete" address file

To remove one address from the list so that it won't be suggested again, open a new message and begin typing in the address. Use the up and down arrow keys to select the address to be removed from the addresses suggested. When the address to be removed is highlighted, hit the Delete key.

To remove all the saved addresses, delete the .nk2 file where Outlook stores them. The file is normally located in Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder for each Outlook profile.

Hi,

I have started getting this as an error message on opening Word 2007.

"Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable."

Am not able to save any word document. Also, on trying to close Word I get this error message;

"Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal.dot. Do you want to save those changes?"

Have checked my environment variables, User Variables are set to as under;

Variable - Value
Temp - C: Documents and Settings/ABC/Local Settings/Temp
TMP - C: Documents and Settings/ABC/Local Settings/Temp

Also, the Value in the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER >Software >Microsoft >Windows >CurrentVersion >Explorer >User Shell Folders >Cache is as %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files.

Pls assist in resolving this issue.

Answer:Word 2007 Error Message: "Word could not create the work file."

There are 2 registry paths to change:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER >Software >Microsoft >Windows >CurrentVersion >Explorer >Shell Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER >Software >Microsoft >Windows >CurrentVersion >Explorer >User Shell Folders

Both have the "Cache" String which should be changed. And the correct Win7 Cache path in both entries is

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Termporary Internet Files

Hi,

My organisation has just rolled out an Exchange 2007 Server.
I am a desktop support engineer for my unit. We are setting up access to the server through Outlook 2003.

A small number of Outlook 2003 users get this error message when they are using a .prf file to configure their clients.

"Your Exchange Server administrator has blocked the version of Outlook that you are using. Contact your administrator for assistance."

This is XP SP2 running Outlook 2003 (error occurs on Office, Office SP2 and Office SP3) connecting to Exchange 2007.

I have tried tried applying SP2 and SP3 to Office and completely reinstalling Office but it still occurs.

I am told by the Server Administrators that this is a local problem so I am not getting any help from them. I tend to believe them that it's not server side because I set one of the profiles up on two PCs next to eachother. On one it worked fine but on the other it had this error message. I could not see a difference in the two Outlook installations.
I have read this article here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924625 but a lot of the questions it asks and tests involve having administrator access over the server which I do not have.

Does anyone know of anything in the local Office installation that I do have control over that has been known to cause this?

All the best,

mantis484

Answer:Solved: Outlook 2003/Exchange 2007 - "Your Version of Outlook has been blocked..."

Hi we managed to find the solution so I'm posting it here to help others.

We inherited a number of builds that were done by other companies. It appears these builds have in the past had previous versions of Office installed. This has resulted in registry keys lurking around from the old installs.

Once we removed these registry entries it worked.

Best way to do this that I could think of is to

1) Uninstall Office and then search the registry for any references to Outlook. You can do this using AML Free Registry Cleaner http://www.amltools.com/ (which has a search function). Ignore any hits for Outlook Express you are only insterested in Office Outlook.

2) If this is the problem that you are having then you will find registry entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\7.0 or 8.0 or 9.0 etc.

3) Delete any Outlook folders in the above tree. Onc eof the keys in the Outlook folder will be Version and this appears to be what is being read when the server asks what version you have.

4) Reinstall Office - it should now work.

All the best,

mantis484

I have been running Windows Backup on my Win 7 64-bit Home system successfully for a while. I selected a USB drive as my backup destination, and a number of local folders as the source. I also included my OneDrive folder in the source folder set.

My computer's name was "MIKE-PC". I noticed that my USB drive had a special folder (special icon) labeled MIKE-PC and I was not able to open this folder to view its contents.

Recently I did a few things. I changed my computer's name to PENGUIN and renamed some of the source folders in my backup set. I didn't care at that point whether Windows Backup was working because I was reorganizing my data.

Today I finished reorganizing my data, and went to change the Windows Backup settings. First I deleted both MIKE-PC and PENGUIN from the USB drive. Then I went into Windows Backup and changed the source folder set. The set still includes my OneDrive folder.

I ran the backup. I got an error "Unable to create Zip Folder."

I ran chkdsk and made sure Windows was fully updated.

I ran Windows Backup again and got the same error.

Note that I am using another backup program, IDrive, which backs up to the cloud. That has not caused a problem in the past but I wonder if it can create potential conflicts with Windows Backup.

Any idea how to go about debugging this?

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm using Outlook 2003. I'm designing a new Contacts screen, which better suits the needs of my business.

I have been able to figure out how to everything except for this:

How to I design the "date" and "dollar amount" field values to default to blank/empty instead of defaulting to the word "None" in the case of the "date" field and "$0.00" in the case of the "dollar amount" field?

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

Yesterday I installed the cumulative update. Today I did a cold restart. Now the email app constantly crashes, it comes up and then just freezes until it eventually closes itself (or gets closed). The event viewer contains two events for each try, which seem to have to do with this.

First comes:

And then:

These are both generated by source ESENT.

This raises several questions:

Why would it at all try to create a log-file in C:\Windows\System32? Are there not more appropriate places for log-files?

And most importantly, the email app worked fine yesterday, does anyone know what can I do to get this corrected and working again? Surely it does not have to be run as Administrator?

Hi, a couple of days ago, I switched on my PC (Acer desktop, Vista) and it would not start up windows. It suggested normal start or start up repair (automatic fix). I opted for normal start – which failed – and then start up repair, which also failed.

I think that is where I got the error - cannot create a file when that file already exists (0x80070087). I was then given various ‘advanced options’

1. start up repair - automatically fix problems that are preventing windows from starting. (which I had already tried)
2. system restore - restore windows to earlier point and time
3. windows complete pc restore -
4. windows memory diagnostic tool -
5. command prompt

I opted for number 2 and on the third attempt (going back in time) the system successfully restarted. It said my data had not been changed, only fix done on drive ‘C’. I noticed that it had also said once system restore started, can’t be undone as system in ‘limited diagnostic state’.

I used the PC for a time and then switched off.

Next morning, I turned on the PC and got the same error, Windows would not start.

I went through the same procedure as above and successfully booted the PC from an ‘earlier point’; in fact it was the point when I restarted the previous night.

Can you advise? Is the PC still in ‘limited diagnostic state’? If so, what can I do? I have left PC running for last 48 hours as unsure about result if I power off. Thanks.

Answer:Windows not starting "cannot create a file that already exists"

Hi,

I had problem starting Windows. Did restore to earlier point. Worked OK, powered off. Had same start-up problem again. I again restored (to different earlier point) and PC working OK. PC has been left runing since then - 48 hours.

My question is, can I now safely power off? And if not, what can I do to avoid Windows not starting again?

Full details in this thread. Many thanks as about to leave for a few days and don't really want to leave PC running.

When I first installed Office 365 Home Premium, Outlook worked perfectly. Recently, whenever I start Outlook 2013, an error message requesting an Outlook data file appears.

"! The file C:\Users\John\Documents\Outlook Files\Outlook.pst cannot be found."

After I cancel two successive screens dismissing the request, the program works fine.

I'm sure I caused this problem inadvertently while learning to use this app.

Thanks for your suggestions

Hi everyone. I have an interesting issue. I have someone's Outlook Contacts configured to file contacts as lastname, firstname. However, when they create a new contact and enter the person's name in the Name field the File As field shows it as firstname, lastname instead of lastname, firstname. This is how it looks:

Name: John Doe
File As: John, Doe

Any thoughts on how to fix this one?

Problem: When in “My Pictures” folder, highlighting any image file (such as a .jpg file) and then clicking “E-Mail This File” in the “File and Folder Tasks” pane always pulls up Outlook Express even though Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 is set as the default email client.

From what I gather, this seems to be a fault with Sendmail.dll program or it’s settings in Windows. This is registered to open Outlook Express only and not Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. I believe it is possible to repair this, but such resolution evades me.

The work-around is to right-click the file and click on “Send To” Microsoft Outlook. This way we cancontinue to email images and documents with little or no inconvenience. In the meantime, I will post this on a few forums for a possible resolution. This is the case for several of our computers. I've looked for about four hours on how to repair this, and haven't found an aswer that works.

Thus far, we have made the three major settings that also affect the way Windows XP is set to handle Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 as the default client and these are set correctly on Judy’s Computer:

In Internet Explorer:

Tools, Internet Options, Programs, e-mail:

1.. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Other.
2.. Under General, select the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail,

Hi

Am running windows vista home premium with office 2007 professional installed.

About a month or two ago, I've noticed that whenever I close outlook, i get an error message:

"outlook has stopped working"

Everything seems to work fine otherwise, but this is a little annoying and I'm wondering if there's any way to either fix the problem or turn the error warning off.

Thanks

Am using OUtlook 2003 and wondered whether there is a way to simultaneously view the Calendar and Contacts folders on one screen. Thanks.

Answer:Outlook: Simultaneous View of "Calendar" & "Contacts"

Maybe someone else has a better idea, but you could open two instances of Outlook and size the screens so that you could view both windows next to each other.

When you open any letter to view it there are 4 buttons below (ltr): Reply, Delete, Left, Right. Obviously for 'right-handed' people Right button should open next letter and Left - previous. But for some reasons order is reversed. Do you know what is the reason? Is it UI/UX based decision?

Answer:Why "next" and "back" buttons in Mobile Outlook are reversed?

The only sensible thing I can make of it is that you're looking at a list in reverse chronological order (newest at the top), so going forward would go to the next (older) message.

My employer (School Board) requested all staff laptops be returned over summer so the OS could be upgraded from Win 7 Enterprise, so I did an export of my Outlook 2010 file to work on from home- they now want all Outlook profiles below 50 MB. My personal laptop (Win 7 Pro with Office 2010) died last Tuesday before I could import said file. New ASUS G771J laptop came with Win 8.1 Home which I upgraded yesterday to Win 10 Home. Employer is moving to Office 2013 so I installed the HUP version yesterday as well.
Am now trying to import a password protected Outlook 2010 file (backup.pst) that was backed up from the work Acer running Win 7 Enterprise computer and Office 2010. I use Thunderbird or Gmail as my email client so will not use Outlook 2013 beyond weeding through this mound of work emails.
Was on M$ Win 10 website

Both backup files are named differently depending on the Outlook version 2010 (backup.pst) and 2013 (Outlook.pst) so I copy/pasted the 2010 file into the same folder as the 2013 file then renamed the 2013 file to Outlook.OLD hoping that would trigger Outlook to accept the 2010 file but Outlo... Hello:

I've been trying to get my Outlook Express 5 to do a REPLY TO SENDER from
within a newsgroup without any success.
I have re-verified all setting, etc., as best I can with no luck.
Everything else seems to work fine.

Everything works just fine with OE, except the Reply-To-Sender from within a newsgroup.
You press the Send button, the cute icon shows the envelope moving, and that's that.
It never goes anywhere, and does Not appear in the Sent folder. No error messages.

Funny, I believe that it did work before I upgraded to OE 5 from OE 4, Also strange that I can send e-mails with OE from outside the Newsgroup format.

*I "think" I may have found a hint to the problem, but need more advice.

The page that opens up when you do a Reply To Sender from within a newsgroup
wants to send the message, apparently, via Outlook. I don't have Outlook
installed.
Eudora is my Default e-mailer.

It won't let me change from Outlook in the pull down box on the page that opens up after you press the Reply To Sender button; that's the only option that comes up, and I can't seem to change it.

I don't want to have to install or use Outlook.
Can't I get it to go thru/use Eudora (or my ISP's mail Server) without having Outlook installed?

How would I do this, if the page that opens up after hitting to reply to sender does not offer it as an option?

Should I try making OE my Default mail program? Really don't want to, as I would ... Read more

Greetings!

Just bought a new computer, and although I have it networked with my old one, don't know how to transfer inbox/cal/contacts/etc. from Outlook 2000 to my new Outlook 2007 on my new computer. HELP!! Thanks!

Answer:Transfering Outlook '00 "stuff" to new computer using Outlook '07

Hello lamalady,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I'm not positive that Outlook 2007 can open a 2000 pst file, but it should.

Copy the Outlook 2000 .pst file to the new comp. Then in Outlook 07, File/Open (not import). Navigate to the file.

Please keep us posted.

Hope this helps.

Hi all... Recently made the upgrade to Outlook 2007 in our Citrix farm. Experiencing this issue with non-Admin personnel:

Outlook could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable.

That being said, very little is found on the internet. The few solutions we have found have not worked. The user has read/write access to the folder where the temp directory is held, read/write to the temp internet files folder, and the system variables all point in valid locations with proper access for non-Admin users.

Anyone care to throw a bone out at this one?

TIA!

So I'm on the latest build of Windows 10 (the one ending in 420), and I've got Outlook 2016 always running in the background. But somehow both my phone and the Windows 10 Mail app manage to be more useful than Outlook 2016 when it comes to fetching mail immediately, or as it arrives. Outlook 2016 is stuck fetching mail every 5-10 minutes because apparently there's no simple "as items arrive" option for this unnecessarily expensive program.
Really, Microsoft?
Today I went 2 hours without a single Outlook 2016 notification. The moment I shut my computer off and checked my phone before going to bed... you guessed it. I had 2 new emails from work timestamped to 1 hour ago!!! And I never got a desktop notification or email alert from Outlool 2016 while my computer was on! I've checked and rechecked the mail notification settings for Windows 10 and every single notification setting is set to 'on'. Yet I receive new mail alerts so inconsistently on Outlook that I'm considering asking MS for a refund, if they'll give me one.
Is there anything I can do to remedy my situation?

Answer:Why is it that the Windows 10 Mail app has an "as items arrive" setting but Outlook 2016 doesn't?

I have Outlook Express 6 on my old computer (with Windows XP) and have exported the address book as a .WAB file. With this .WAB I have imported the contacts on my new computer (with Windows Vista) into the "Windows Contacts" thing.

The problem is that I can't then manage to export the contacts to Outlook 2003 which is the program I'm now using on the new computer. Exporting leaves me two choices, creating a .csv file or a bunch of .vcf files. .csv doesn't work (it comes out all jumbly when I try importing) and .vcf works but I can only import the contacts one by one and I have over 1000 to import.

What can I do?

Does anyone know if its possible to autofill the "from field" as a rule, when your in "another users /delegates" mailbox, so you dont have to add their address in the "from field"? (so it will autopopulate with their email address (and show "on behalf of")?
I hope this was clear.

thanks.

Answer:Solved: outlook 2007 "from field" 'on behalf of" issue

No ... its not possible if the user has more than one delegate (that has added them with the applicable rule). from that point on, they will have to choose which person they want to add to "sent" on behalf of field.

However, If they have just one (one only) user who has added them with that permission (to send on behalf of), it will auto-populate with that user.

So, It does not matter even if they are "in" a specific users mailbox (and expect the "on behalf of" to auto fill with that users name). If they have more than one delegate that has added them with that permission, they will still have to choose which user the message will sent "on behalf of"

i figured this out by trail and error etc

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Kindly use all layman's language. Thanks!

Answer:Cannot create the desired default view in "save file" folders.

Hi, I doubt that can be done. Different programs generate differently formatted save boxes for example- not all look the same or have the same features. Thus they may not use the same set of settings.

I'm not sure what's the cause for this, but I believe it has to do with a recent SweetIM malware attack. I tried to fix it. And also did a system restore. Malware is gone, but this thing came up.

The error message comes up upon closing an app (NoteTab Light). It's trying to save some info, but can't. My browser, Opera, now also is unable to recall from the cache when it previously can. Apparently, something has changed that prevents writing to files within that folder. Maybe not just the Roaming folder, but the whole Appdata as well. I can't be sure.

In anyway, I found that I can manually add and edit files in the folder, but apps can't do that anymore. What could be the cause?

Answer:Cannot create file "c:\User\...\Appdata\Roaming...". Access is denied.

"Access is denied" could mean you're not administrator, or you haven't set the privileges of the action to allow yourself to do so..

I have a Kodak Easyshare SV811 digital frame. I copied several photos from my computer picture file to the frame via usb cable. However, some of the pictures didn't copy over and when I tried to do it individually I would get the message "Cannot copy...(file #) directory or file could not be created" why will come photos copy over to frame but others will not? The frame still has 45% memory left so it's not a space issue. I cannot tell that any of the photos that won't copy over are any different than the ones that did, they are all jpeg

Answer:"cannot create directory or file" message for digital frame

Try a new media card (if the photo frame uses a media card, of course). Then you can put the media card into a card reader, copy the files across, then put the media card in to the frame. This will bypass any problems that the frame might have writing files to itself.
