I have a new surface computer and cannot find a dvd/cd drive to view/access stored pix, do I need an external dvd drive?

Question: I have a new surface computer and cannot find a dvd/cd drive to view/access stored pix, do I need an external dvd drive?

do I need to go out and find an external dvd drive in order to access the pix/ use the discs? Or am I missing something on this ? If I need to purchase one, what is recommended for a modest budget?

Preferred Solution: I have a new surface computer and cannot find a dvd/cd drive to view/access stored pix, do I need an external dvd drive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: I have a new surface computer and cannot find a dvd/cd drive to view/access stored pix, do I need an external dvd drive?

Yes you'll need an external USB cd/DVD drive to access disc. You can get one for a cheap as $20. They're all pretty much the same.

In Windows 7, you'll need to take ownership of the drive you want to get your files from. See here for instructions on how to do so (the instructions begin after the suggestions on how to connect the drive).

I recently purchased a Sony BlueRay player, a Netgear wireless router with DLNA and USB storage support and a Western Digit 2TB Mybook drive. My intent was to store videos of TV programs on the WD drive attached to the Netgear router and access them from the Sony player using the DLNA function of the router. However, the Netgear router DLNA support does not work reliably and Netgrear Tech support was useless as is often the case when there is actually a bug in a consumer product. When I say "work reliably", I mean that I can see the Videos files and but I have never been able to view more than one complete video before getting a message reporting that the file is corrupted or unsupported. This is not the case as I can go back and restart the video and it will play through to the end.

In any case, I began storing the videos on my PC running Windows Vista Home Premium x64 where I can view them reliably using the Sony BR player. FYI, I have viewed over 100 videos stored on the PC with once getting this failure even though the video is streaming from the PC to the Sony BR player via the Netgear router.

However, this is using up a lot of valueable disk space on my hard drive. I tried attaching the WD 2TB USB drive to my PC and moving the files to the USB drive but the Sony BR play does no find them when they are stored on a externally attach drive even if I add the drive to the indexed search function.

Can anyone tell what it takes to make video files on an ext... Read more

Answer:Making videos available which are stored on external drive.

Have you tried mapping a network drive?
THE LIMITATIONS is in the software, so maybe having the wd mapped as a local drive may let the player find it.

Hi, I have 2 pending sector count and was wondering how to find what information is stored on these sectors. I have run HD Tune Pro and it showed 2 red blocks: Error : LBA 16829295 and 16901956. I downloaded a program called DiskView to find that clusters but the numbers didn`t match. How to find if valuable information is stored in these sectors?

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Find data stored on bad hard drive sector

Hello and welcome Troubleman I don't know if this will work but give it a try

BOOTABLE UBUNTU

Make a bootable Ubuntu disk http://www.ubuntu.com/download

Set the BIOS to boot from theoptical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL> select TRYnot INSTALL

When it is finished - it takes verylittle time you will get a screen like in the pic .

Open the drive you want > Userand dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy /paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doingthis.

I am not sure if it will but I haverecovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or justplain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.

There is always this too Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. use the right hand part of the program when it starts I haven't as yet but worth a try.

There is always Recuva too https://www.piriform.com/recuva have used this on occasion but my first suggestion works a treat - it sometimes will not be able to access some files but in general just about all because it does not have to use Windows. .

My son-in-law asked me to reformat his Dell Inspiron 1525 and do a clean reload of a misbehaving Windows Vista.
Before I did this, I used the Windows Backup function In Backup and Restore Center to save all of his data files to my external USB HDD. This function created a new folder on the drive called Richard-PC, which appears to hold the full data backup.
I have now fully reloaded Vista and all of the device drivers. However, I'm finding it impossible to restore the data backup. Here's what happens:-

I go to Control Panel > Backup and Restore Center
I click the radio button for Restore Files From Latest Backup > Next

I immediately get an error report which says:
Windows Backup
The disk containing the backup is not accessible. Please make sure it is turned on and connected to the computer.
The HDD that contains the backup is connected and turned on. What's more I can see it using Windows Explorer and see all the folders on it, including the Richard-PC backup folder.
I have also tried all of the other Restore options. Under Advanced Restore > Files from an older Backup made on this computer, the backup list shows the HDD drive, but reports it as:
Backup location is not available.
Please can anyone help me to restore the data to this computer?

Answer:Reloaded Vista - now computer won't find external backup drive

May possibly be a problem with the drive letter being allocated by the new installation of Vista.
When you did the initial backup your external drive will have been given a drive letter by Windows. You need to ensure that you use the same drive letter for the disk in the new installation. With the drive connected navigate to Disk Management and reassign the original drive letter to the external drive.

I am about to partition my hard disk so that I can run both Windows 98SE and Windows XP - e.g. Windows 98 on the C: drive and Windows XP on the D: drive. I am OK about how to do this but I would like to be able to install my applications, like MS Word, on a third drive (E: drive) in the hope that both operating systems will be able to use the applications on the E: drive. However, I have received conflicting advice about whether or not this is possible.Microsoft's web site seems to say that if I want both operating systems to be able to use a particular application I will have to install that application in both the C: and the D: drives. On the other hand I have read that it is possible to make a single installation on the E: drive.Does anyone know if it is possible for both operating system to use an application that is stored on a separate drive, or do I have to install the application on each of the drives that contain the operating system? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer:Access to applications stored on a separate drive

I've only tried it with opera and computer games and it worked. Some files were still written to C:Only way to know is to try it.

System: AMD KT3 1.8GHz, Primary HD 80Gb Maxtor, Slave HD (former primary) 40Gb Maxtor. OS WinXP Home

I just installed a new 80Gb HD to replace an old 40Gb HD that was dying (would no longer boot reliably, some sectors damaged). The old HD OS was Win98. I have installed WinXP Home on the the new HD. Everything has gone pretty well, no major problems. BUT there were a lot of email messages stored on the old HD, some of them quite important. I was using Outlook express on the old drive, same has been installed on the new one. I have no idea how to access the stored email on the old drive. Most of the data on the old drive is still accessible. I know where to find the files that contain this data on the old HD, but not what to do with them. I don't think the files are damaged. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey all,
I have recently bought a new HP and wanted to get all the information transfered from my old hard drive to my new one. I cannot seem to do this tho because it will not give me the permissions to access the folders on the old hard drive. Is their a way I can access this information through an admin account? I have tried to dual boot but I cannot get into the old partition and it gives the blue screen of death on the old hard drive partition (running XP operating system). Any help on this matter would be most appreciated.

Answer:Access information stored on old Hard Drive

Hmmm - I just did this from my old Vista x64 partition to my new Vista x64 partition - and had no problems (copying info that is).

However, trying to boot your old XP partition in your new comp is not going to work - the mobo, and other hardware, drivers are just going to be too different for XP to be able to cope.

Are you running Windows Explorer with the "Run as Administrator" enabled (find windows explorer in start and right click, then select "Run as Administrator" - because you will need full admin privileges to do so).

If that does not work, then here is an idea - on your new computer, try creating a new user - that has the exact same username and password as the user on the XP partition (and make sure it is not a limited user - IOW, it is an administrator account). Now change (not switch users but actually log out of your current user and log into the new user) and see if you can copy the info. If you can, then you'll want to copy every thing to your 'public' folders (create folders in C:\Users\Public) so that you can boot back into your other account and still get access to them.

Hello. Hoping that someone can help me out here and that I did not lose everything off my hard drive.

This started just last night. I have a 300 gig external hard drive (I forget the brand, if that is relevant). When turn the hard drive on it starts running and my computer recognizes it in My Computer. However, I cannot access the hard drive in any way. When I try to there is a response about 2 minutes later saying "F:\ is not accessible. Error performing inpage operation."

The LED on my hard drive enclosure remains lit and is red or green, I do not know the relevance of that either.

If I left out any relevant information, please let me know and i will try and obtain it.

Please let me know if there is any suggestions to getting my hard drive to work again. Or if there is any possible way for me to get the information off of it, if it is otherwise dead.

Thank you.

I am looking to get a DVD/cd drive to copy music from CDs to my Surface 2. I am trying to look online but I am a little overwhelmed. What is the best DVD/CD drive for the Surface 2?

Answer:I am looking to get an external dvd/cd drive for my Surface 2, which is the best for the money?

There are a couple of things to consider....
EDIT, just re-read your post... is your surface an RT or Pro?
Option 1) You should be able to access a shared drive on your network, but will have to have permissions set, etc...
Option 2)For an RT version...
I believe the Surface RT can access a USB DVD drive in the same manner of the Pro (see below), HOWEVER, from what I have read, it can only read data (can't burn a CD/DVD), and it can't playback a DVD directly from disk as it doesn't have the required codecs. For a Pro version...
If you want to plug it in directly to the Surface, make sure it is a drive that has its own power supply (needs to be plugged in to a wall for power and USB is only used for data....
If you have a docking station for your surface, you can use a drive that uses 2 USB ports (I believe one is used just for power and the other is data and power)...
FWIW, I bought an LG CP40... blu-ray (playback only) + DVD reader/writer... It uses 2 USB cables, so I can only use it when my Surface 2 Pro is in the docking station.

Hi, I have an old IBM T40 Thinkpad which suddenly started showing FAN ERROR. I tried to get a quote to get it repaired; I understand it costs about $275 at IBM / Lenovo Hardware Depot. Is there a cheaper way I can fix this problem? While waiting to find a cheaper way, I wanted to move my files from the laptop HDD to my desktop. I removed the laptop HDD and conencted it to my desktop as an external HDD - using "ULTRA USB to IDE/ SATA connector". It works ! I am able to read all the contents of the laptop HDD except for my own files. I am the admin user on that laptop; all other users are non-admin users (children). When I connected this to my desktop, I am able to see all the files of all users except my own... I guess this is a security feature from IBM ?? It is very good  to know that this feature exists - especially if we lose our laptop. But now, this feature became a problem for me... I am not able to retrieve the files. I know my admin password; but I don't see any place to use that to open my folders on the laptop HDD. Please let me know if you have any solution to this problem? 1. How to access my files (I am the admin user)  from my laptop HDD when is removed and connected to a desktop as an external hard drive? 2. How get the FAN ERROR fixed in a low cost way (i.e., replacing the fan) Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Answer:T40 - how to access files from the laptop HDD connected as an external drive to another computer?

vsreddy, welcome to the forum, 1. If you enter the properties of the folder you need to access and choose security, then advanced and choose owner. You should be able to take ownership of the folder.  2. You can replace the fan yourself, instructions and part number to order can be found in the Hardware Maintainance Manual. You can order parts online or through the Boulder parts center at 1-800-388-7080.   Hope this helps

Answer:Solved: External Hard Drive: Unable to access through My Computer

It could be as simple as getting your Windows7 up to date. You are missing SP1 and all post updates. After installing SP1 be sure to restart the computer if it did not do so. Then, using your Windows Update, complete all post updates.

Not from a USB stick on your router.
There are apps that will play shared media on your home network like myMediahub. The PC has to be set up to do this. I use it from my media center PC.
Just media, pictures, video, movies, music. It will even play Recorded TV

Hi. Here's a screen shot.

Woke up and fired up computer this morning.

Went to access my External Hard-Drive.

I have several of these, and the one I needed has been assigned drive letter G:

Was showing up as 'I' and not letting me access.

Upon closer look it appears some 'CD' drive showing up out of nowhere assigned itself to 'G' now.

I put a disc into the 'D:' drive and that shows up when I do.

But I can't change this new 'CD' drive that's showing up as 'G' in explorer, because it doesn't show up in disc manager where we can reassign new drive letters.

Anybody know how to over-come this?

Greeting Windows Central users,
I am currently studying engineering and is at the crossroads on which laptop or 2 in 1s to buy. I currently have 2 choices:
i) Buy a Macbook Pro Retina (i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD) and an external hard disk with Windows 10 installed on it.
ii) Buy a Surface Pro 4/5, 4 if the price is low enough when the 5 comes out, depends on how well Kaby Lake is. I'll get the type cover as well.
If you have any other laptops or choices in mind, please let me know.
Here're my usage scenario:
i) Watch movies (stream from websites), watch youtube videos.
ii) Web browsing like 9gag, looking at things I can't afford to buy, language learning websites (Duolingo, Deutsche Welle).
iii) Run finite element engineering software that are exclusive to Windows.
iv) Off the wall (6 to 8 hours away from the wall socket) traveling with the laptop or 2 in 1.
v) Writing reports on the go like in iv)
Here're my gripes with the OS-es.
Windows 10
i) Confusing OS. No idea where the proper settings are, windows updates unpredictable (Take Surface Pro 4 battery life issue as the example), too many "layers" of settings, NO MORE PLACEHOLDER FOR ONEDRIVE.
ii) Bad and unpredictable battery life, don't deny it, you all know how it's like.
iii) Software installation often involves registry editing (the installers does it on its own) and leaves a trail of chaos when you uninstall it. Redundant folders and files often left where they are.
iv) Feeling of Microsoft might... Read more

This PC user has a lot of HDDs that were used in a previous incarnation of Windows,
ie. WinXP. There are some files that I know that I used in XP days gone by, and
I would like to locate them and reuse them again.
I tried going the USB route, but it didn't work. Win 7 was not able to find the
external Mass storage device connected to a USB port.
Fortunately I have Promise Tech. Ultra133 TX2 HDD controller card which works
with Win 7, and has a Super Swap thing that came with it.
Everything works.
The key switch works!. With that I can connect and disconnect the HDD form
the OS.
But it seems like the built-in security features of Win 7 keep getting in the way.
When I start Win 7 with the connection made to the external HDD, an error screen
comes up telling me that there is a problem.
I can either let Windows try to fix it, or I can tell it to load Windows 7 normally.
When I tell it to load normally, the system shuts down and restarts.
Does anybody know I can get around this s/w road block?

Hello,

my SSD drive was suddenly inaccessible after a reboot, so I put my backup spindle drive into my laptop to get it started.

Because I have important files I need to access from my ssd I put that into a case and plugged it into the USB port.

Now windows explorer just hangs forever trying to detect/access it! in Computer management I cannot see the disk partition but I can see the harddisk device in device manager.

In windows explorer I can see one drive letter assigned (there should be two drives on the ssd) but when I tried to access the drive it just hangs forever. It also hangs with any other methods I try to access it (chkdsk, data recovery programs, Testdisk by CGSecurity)!!

I think the main issue is that the external ssd is locking up everytime some program tries to access it... perhaps if I can somehow remove this lock I might be able to attempt a data recovery....

does anyone know how I can stop it from freezing?

Thanks so much in advance for your help guys....

I always back up the c drive, using Acronis True Image, onto an external hard drive. Afterwards, I like to open the backup file, to view the contents, to make sure everything is there. I have just bought a new computer, installed evrything I need, done a backup onto the hard drive, but I find I am unable to open the backup file. Can anyone help. Also, Acronis is good, but the instructions are terrible. Can anyone recommend a good backup software. When I looked on the internet, Acronis & Norton Ghost were listed as the best. My external hard drive came with free backup software, but this was really bad and only backed up half of the stuff. Thanks

Answer:Cannot view backup on external hard drive

You might need to delete the partition on the external drive and reformat it as NTFS.Acronis can verify the back up and if that works then there is no problem with it. It can also browse the files in the back up by going Operations>Explore Backpup Archive.Did you make an Acronis Secure Zone? Anything in this is not visible to Windows.

I have an external HD (Maxtor 3200, 300 GB), that I use as my main data storage volume because I have had multiple hd crashes on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 9100 - see profile for details).

After the first hd crash, I added access security to certain folders on the external drive, limiting access to only my user for the new HD in case some else plugged into my external (roommate not trusted). After adding the folder access security, the second hd crashed.

After I installed the new HD, and reinstalled the OS and other software, I lost access to these files. I can see them, but I cannot play them or move them to a different location. These are mostly video and audio files with a few other exceptions.

I have found many articles relative to taking ownership of the folders and files and have done so several attempts: From safe mode as admin, from safe mode as user, from regular user non-safe mode (I run xp pro and have admin rights as my standard user.)

The error message I get from Win media plyr 11 is C00D11D2. From quick time it's -36 I/O erro occured. From Dell PowerDVD player Error code: 80070005 Access is denied.

I am sure that this problem is cause by a 'hangover' from having set these security access restriction from an account on an old drive with an old/different install of my OS. The user account is different, plus, I may have inadvertantly update the xp pro OS to a level beyond where it was when I activated the access restriction.

Hi - newbie question here. I've looked over the Internet for a solution, but although I go into Disk Management and right-click my Seaport external hard drive, the only options I get are "New Simple Volume," "Properties," and "Help." I'd like to assign a letter to it but I don't know how. Can you help? Thanks in advance!

Answer:Unable to view files on external hard drive

If those are your only options then something has happened to your drive and the partition has been wiped. Your only option is to create a new volume and start again. I would then run HD Tune and check to see if the drive is failing

Started using robocopy to do my backups. In my command lines, i can specify directories on a external drive to backup to.Some directories show up and i see everything. My most important directory " my documents" DOESNT SHOW UP. I have confirmed a backup is occuring, via log file and properties on the backup folder. I edited it down to a backup of only that folder. Log file shows good, external drive shows the "backup" root directory and properties ( size, number of files) match log file. Open up the backup folder, NOTHING LISTED. I have to run the script as adminstrator , my user is admin also, but if i run it as myself, it cant access the folder. I think im dealing with a right issue, i have edited security on the external drive, even reformatted it , still nothing shows up.

Answer:Robocopy / view backed up files on external drive

Andy,

Please provide system specifications as per tutorial - this make it so much easier to help.

i can't get my puter to read the data on an external hard drive. wants me to format it even though it recognizes the drive letter i gave it when i did format it. don't want to lose the 100+ gigs of data i have on this drive.

Answer:my computer recognizes the drive letter but not the data on external hard drive

Does the external drive work on another machine?

Also, while the drive is still connected, can you go into Device Manager (right-click My Computer, click on 'Manage...', click on 'Device Manager') to check for any yellow exclamation marks or red crosses next to anything in there?

Okay, here's a weird one. And of the searching I've done, it seems others who've had this problem have had encryption, which I don't.

Problem: When I click on my H: drive or try to access it from the command line, it gives me an access denied error. However, all of the applications that I have installed on that drive run without issue. So, there is some access there. (See attached images. The first shows the hard drive state in diskmanager and in windows explorer. The second image shows the minecrafter launcher profile (that it is stored in H: and the application running, proving that there is some access.

System: Home built PC: (C:) 240GB SSD for OS, (E:) 1TB HDD for file storage and backup, (H:) 1TB HDD for large applications and video editing files. All drives are Simple, Basic, and none have encryption. All use the SATA connectors.

Process:
I had Windows 7 Home 64 bit with, among many other things, Comodo Internet Security, Virtualbox, ImageDisk.
During the upgrade process, I noticed that Windows 10, during the upgrade, ran the file system check and fix "problems" on the H: drive.
(Side note) Having forgotten to uninstall Comodo before the upgrade, I did not have network after the upgrade. The fix was non-trivial as I had to use a second computer to download the unofficial comodo uninstaller. Reboot. Uninstall the network devices. Reboot. And once Windows 10 was up and running, it reinstalled the network devices and the network was available.

Answer:Hard drive inaccessible after upgrade - (apps stored on drive run)

In the second image, you can see that there is a doubled blue arrows on the Minecraft icon. I've read that this means that file or files are compressed. Would this have an effect on my H: drive issue?

I have a user with a Surface running Windows 8.1.  When he is on our network, LAN or VPN, he is not able to see a folder view when connecting to an external FTP site.  When off our network, he is able to get a folder view of the files on the
external FTP site.  I am trying to determine what could be preventing the folder view.  The Surface is on our domain.  I tested with my laptop running WIN7 and I get the same results.  I am hoping someone has experienced this issue and
can tell me what could be the root cause.  What networking or Information Security appliance could prevent a folder view on a Surface and laptop.

I need assistance determining what could be preventing a MS Surface running WIN8.1 being unable to view files on an external FTP server suing folder view.  The MS Surface is on our domain.  When I use my laptop to access the FTP site with the
folder view settings applied properly; I get the same results.  I cannot find any network device (router, switch) or Information Security appliance that would prevent the external FTP site files showing in folder view.  When off our network, both
the Surface and my laptop display the files in folder view.  Any ideas to what could be preventing on our LAN and WiFi networks would be appreciated.

I have been looking for a 2TB portable external hard drive with USB 3.0 or equivalent. I'm now thinking seriously about getting a WD:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1455023&CatId=4227

I'm hearing on other threads that external drives are not built for continuous use (cooling has been mentioned as an issue) and that one needs to go the more expensive route of an internal hard drive in a separately purchased enclosure.

I would prefer having a secondary hard drive running concurrently with my computer. I know cooling devices are available for the internal HDD + enclosure combinations. Are they available for external hard drives?

I intend to have online backup to supplement hardware backup.

Answer:Your view on subject of external hard drive vs. internal HD in an enclosure?

Personally, I prefer buying a highly rated bare drive and placing it in a fan cooled enclosure - especially if it will be running for hours at a time.

The best internal drives (like WD Caviar Black or RE series) have a five year warranty, versus 1-2 years for pre-built external drives. To me, it's worth a few extra bucks versus taking chances on losing data due to an overheating drive.

This computer Vaio running Vista suddenly failed to recognize the DVD drive. When you push the button the light lights but door will not open. Also, under computer the drive is not listed.

When you plug in the external hard drive, the computer sees the drive, loads the driver and in the device manager shows it is working properly but has a exclamation mark next to the name. However, when you look in computer the drive is not listed.

The C drive along with a USB stick work fine.

The computer has been cleaned using AVG and Superspyware. Also, various other aspects have been checked using Advanced System Care. The C drive is 90% full.

I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I guess no one has a clue.

It also will not recognized an external DVD player/writer. BTW, all of these were easily seen on another computer and worked fine.

Answer:Computer fails to see dvd drive and external hard drive.

Josh, you have been warned. Do not double/triple post. Someone will post if they know the problem. If no one has posted in 24 hours, you may double post, not 2 hours later.

(if that is not correct, will a mod please correct me? I'm not sure what the rules are on that)

Is this PATA or SATA? did you check that the connection is firm? your DVD-rom is seperate from your HDD.

I have a LaCie Porsche Design P9223 Slim External 500GB USB3Hard Drive that my father was using on his computer (with no problem). We're both running Windows 7. My computer, a Dell Studio XPS9000, won't recognize it in "My Computer". There's no drive letter!

It shows up in Device Manager ( says, "this device is working properly")
Show up in USB Safely Remove
Shows up in Devices and Printers
Shows up in Disk Management as Unknown/Unitialized, Disk 10. (When I right click and try to initialize it, it says "Device is not ready".)
The Driver is up to date
It works when I attach it to my husband's laptop, running Windows XP.

What can I do to assign it a drive letter???

just reformated my C: drive and put WinXP Pro w/sp1 on there , but now some folders on my seperate hard-drive ( D: ) cannot be opened.
Attempting to open folders on this extra hard-drive cause a message to prompt up which says:" Acess Denied " (here is a link to the screen shot of this message)

when i click on properties for any of these folders it says File-Size: 0KB, although i know the files are still there cuz the hard-drive size did not change.

so i am wondering how to re-gain access to these folders, is it something with the administration settings?

i just dont understand how something from the previous windows registry can effect a seperate hard-drive especially after doing a clean install ??

any help you may have is greatly appreciated!
thanx

Answer:Access Denied (cant view folders on D drive ??)

Sounds like this drive has been locked by a process, perhaps a system process. Check the security permissions on the drive. Otherwise, there should have been no problem with the install, as Windows would see that drive under normal circumstances, assuming it was properly formatted. Also, you may want to test the integrity of the second drive's hardware. What brand is it?

Hi all, I have a few problems which might be related, first is my windows7 Pro PC cannot find the external hdd in windows explorer when its connected, although it shows as “working properly” in Device Manager.
Any other device or memory stick in the USB ports all work as they should.
Over the weeks I have tried checking the hdd’s and have also used ChkDsk which found the drives ok, the memory check was as ok as well.

Problem 2 is when I connect the USB card reader this does not show in Windows explorer

Problem 3 is, I burnt photos to a disc this morning and now when I put the DVD into the drive the drive is also missing from Windows explorer and this drive is also missing from device manager

Any ideas ideas most welcome. Regards Robert.

Help! On my old (Windows 2000 pro) machine, the computer (under "My Computer) only recognizes my external USB DVD-R drive (Pioneer DVR-S706) as a CD-Rom Drive! It plays CDs fine, but when I put a DVD in, I only get a "incorrect function" message. The "my computer" doesn't change to a movie title or anything; it just says "CD-ROM."

The weird thing is, it USED to work just fine. I could play movies, burn discs, etc. The only thing I can think of is that something might have happened when I uninstalled Ulead Movie Studio about a month ago (the DVD burning program that came bundled with the drive). I downloaded the latest firmware updates from the pioneer site, but that hasn't really seemed to make much of a difference.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

thanks!

Answer:Help to Find external drive that supports FAT

It is not the particular HD but the formatting software which you need. There are several places where you can download a free (Trial) of Partition Magic which will allow you to format FAT (16) FAT32 or NTFS.Be really sure you want to do this because while it is reversible, you are putting yourself to a lot of trouble if there is an alternative work-around.

Hello all, I am pleased to know that HP has this kind of assistance for us troubled folk. And, I am more than pleased to be here. A year ago, I purchased this computer for my wife who is a realtor. At the time she had no desk top computer. To be honest, I've never paid much attention to this computer as long as it worked for my wife. This computer used Windows 8 and my computer uses Windows 7. To be honest, I am not at all familiar with working around Windows 8 so need help. I recently ordered and added an external 1 TB Seagate hard drive and Star Tech USB SATA Hard Drive Docking Station. I don't know how to locate this hard drive. I also don't know how to format it for use. Where do I go to find out where this new hard drive is? What do I do to format it for use. Finally, how should I identify this hard drive? Should I call it an "H" or "J" drive? Thank you all for any help you can provide. MusicManBob

Hi

I have an external drive for backups and one of my folders, a huge folder, i'd say, it's around 40 gigs is missing. Well, actually it's not missing, because when i use the "search" option to find files, it shows me the files in there, but i can?t see it in the normal way.

So, it seems to be hidden in some way i just can?t explain. I've already set folder options to show hidden files and folders but it didn't turn out good.

Answer:Canīt find a folder in my external drive

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
Search for one of the files known to be in the folder in question and right click on it. Choose "Properties" and there you will see the path to the file. Look at the name of the folder that contains the file. Perhaps you have been looking for the wrong name. One other point to check is when you first boot up your system before connecting to the internet does your clock show the correct time?

when I plug in my external it depends in what order I do it. If the power is on to it and I plug it in often it is not seen. If I plug the usb in and then turn the power on it is found. Try connecting it differently and see which works best.

Answer:Have to reboot to find external drive

It may be a drive letter assignment problem, as often happens with external drives.
Windows sometimes fails to assign a drive letter to it, but it's easy to assign one manually.

Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

Find the ribbon at bottom right which represents the external drive. You'll see it has no drive letter. Right-click this ribbone and choose "Change Drive Letter & Paths"
Click "New".
Select a drive letter from the drop=down alphabet.
Click 'OK'

I have been using a Seagate Expansion 2TB external drive plugged into my ASUS RT-N56U router streaming movies to my WD TV Live. Recently movie streaming stopped working. I tried connecting the drive to my laptop and recorded what happened below.
Plugged power cable into Seagate 2TB drive. After about 10s plugged USB cable into Windows 7 laptop.
Could not see the drive in File Manager, Device Manager or Disk Management.
After a while the system hung however this was resolved by unplugging the power cable from the Seagate 2TB drive.
With the USB cable still connected to the laptop, I plugged in the power cable back into the Seagate 2TB drive.
This time I could see the drive in File Manager, Device Manager or Disk Management.
Windows popped up a window and asked me if I wanted to fix the drive which I selected "Scan & fix" and the scan completed in about 10mins but nothing was reported.
In File Manager I could see the first level directory structure but no other sub directories or files could be found.
I also ran testdisk which appeared to have found some read errors but no partitions were found.
I have attached a file which includes all the relevant screenshots.

I would really like to recover the files on the drive and any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:Seagate 2TB external drive - cannot find any partitions

Download and run MiniTools Partition Wizard Home Edition 8.1.1 Free download Magic Partition Manager Software, partition magic alternative, free partition magic, partition magic Windows 7 and server partition software - Partition Wizard Online

Right Click on your external drive volume and click on Check File System

In the ensuing dialog box, select Check and Fix detected errors and Start.

Let it complete.

Close Partition Wizard, shut down your computer and remove your external HDD.

Boot your computer and connect your external HDD.

Hope that resolves your problem. ( This is what I did when only one DVD ISO folder showed up on my 1 TB drive. I had umpteen BD ISOs and the drive was almost full. After running Partition Wizard File System check, I got back all the ISOs. If I remember correctly Windows Disk Check did not do anything.)

EDIT: If PW File System check alone does not resolve the problem, follow it up with Windows disk check - fix errors. Again if I remember right it did a good job this time stitching together the fragments and restoring to relevant files.

How Search for Files in Windows 7?

One of the most baffling things about Microsoft 'upgrades' is getting rid of useful features from previous versions.

In XP, you could specify general file type - photos, music, etc. - and search all, and specify folder, drive, etc. No such luck in Windows 7, which has made it decidely harder to search for anything.

It's very simple. I bought a new laptop, and want to import all music, photos and videos from my old computer. But the new search function off the start button doesn't let you specify file type or location...

I want to find ALL music - regardless of file type - on my external hard drive, etc., then copy and import to my new computer.

Can anyone help?

My computer was accessed via remote access scammer 2 nights ago and although my computer has been checked any appears to be safe - (microsoft checked) - my partner has a computer on the same home network and her computer now has (2) 'install.exe' files that have appeared on her external hard drive within folders with names such as 080eb699a612b22018 and f9e359c6c3f913d19353. An additional folder appeared last night They seem to have appeared at about the same time that my computer was remote accessed via the escammer. The files won't allow to be deleted as message saying they can only be deleted with admin access although my partner is the only user and has admin access. Have run Malwarebytes, spybot but files remain. Computer now has Microsoft essential with firewall.

Two questions.

1. How do we know what the install.exe is and if it is malcious hacking or simply system file?
2. How do we remove it if it is malicious?

Answer:install.exe found on external drive - how do I find out what it is?

How do I get my new xp to recognize my external hard, which is on a usb connection?

Answer:Windows xp can't find my external hard drive

Did you reinstall windows with the external drive connected?Did it come with any drivers or diagnostic tools?Try 'Reset Configuration Data' or Clear DMI Pool' options in the BIOS. Yes or Enabled are the options to set to.

I'm having a hard time finding an external enclosure for my IDE hard drive (the larger desktop size of drive) that I can hook up through a USB port. If you can link me to a page of them, or one or two that aren't designed for the smaller sized drives, that would help me out a bunch.

Answer:Please help me find an external hard drive enclosure

Something like this that's assuming it's 3.5 inch drive OR if you don't mind to look at the internal drive a Docking station might well suit your needs ??

Hey there!

So this is my issue -

I recently had a lap top get destroyed, and had the hard drive pulled out and placed into a dock for me to pull the files off of. I have been able to relocate most of my files-

Except EVERYTHING that had been on the Desktop. No files, folders, or anything. And I can not target anything through the hard drive itself, I have tried.

I have also tried granting permission for my new lap top to make sure I have access to everything on the drive - still nothing.

There is no 'Users' folder anywhere easily accessible, and when I DO find it, it's empty?

I have a lot of music and art files from my school work on this thing, and any help to find the files would be appreciated as I have been scouring forums for a month or so with no luck.

Thanks for the help ahead of time.

Hello,

I run a system backup weekly using Widnows backup process. This has worked for a long time, but now it has failed. The external drive than I am using is no longer known to the system.

Using a LaCie 3TB conected via esata.

If I go into Computer Management and then disk management, I see the drive, but the system is saying that I have to initialize the disk.

This disk was working up untill recently. I lost the drive before and had to initialize it. Lost all my data.

I can intialize the drive, but work rather have it connect to my system as it once did.

I have had this problem a couple of times.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Stu

Answer:My system backup failed, could not find external drive

Offhand, it sounds more like a disk problem than a backup program problem.

Have you ever run any hard drive utilities (from LaCie or anyone else) on the drive?

Or checkdisk?

Post a picture of what you see in disk management.

Hello, Thanks in advance for any guidance you can offer. I will do my best to describe what I find to be a confusing scenario. Our Windows 7 laptop became infected with a virus last August. It prevented me from booting the computer. We back up to a 930 gb "My Book" external hard drive. It appears we use WD Smartdrive as a back up facilitator. (Not sure what the program does, but without any effort on our part we have a lot of data, including VHD images, backed up on the external hard drive.) I finally had to re format and reload Windows thinking it would be easy to restore from the back up hard drive. When I reloaded windows I must have named the computer "homeofficelaptop". The previous name must have been "officelaptop". After reloading windows I tried to restore using the backup hard drive, it was not as user friendly as I thought it would be. I ended up just copying and pasting files from the external to the c: drive. Now I want to do it right and restore from a VHD image on the backup drive. Windows is not seeing the backup image I need to use. It only sees an image that was created since I restored. The backup drive has a "WindowsImagebackup" folder containing subfolders "homeofficelaptop" and "officelaptop". The VHD file I want to restore is in "officelaptop". Windows only recognizes "homeofficelaptop". I've tried changing the name of the computer back to "officelaptop" but it is ... Read more

Hi guys,

I have a Western Digital 500GB MyBook external hard drive.
Few days ago I created a folder in the root of the hard drive and I put all the MyBook original folders/files (For example: ArcDeviceInfo, autorun.inf, $RECYCLE.BIN, System Volume Information...etc) in the folder that I created. After that, everytime when I plugged the hard drive USB to my Mac and the hard drive start with normal sound and then it make 6 louder clicking sound and the hard drive stopped. The Hard drive volume didn't show up on my desktop so I open the Disk Utility app. In Disk Utility, I saw my hard drive icon but the name changed to "2 TB WD External Media" (my hard drive is 500GB, now became 2TB).

There is no way that I can enter my hard drive because it disappear, I cannot access the hard drive from my computer. I tried to partition the drive (just to see if the computer recognize it but it said Resource busy. I think the main problem is I put all the MyBook startup files into a new folder that I created and now the hard drive doesn't recognize it.
Can someone please tell me what should I do? Any suggestion? I know go to a professional to recover all the files is an option, but that will cost me $900 - $2900 (they gave me the quote online).
I hope someone can help me with this. Thank you very much for reading this.

Answer:WEIRD: External Hard Drive is gone, cannot find my files anymore.

Basically you have one option. Open the case and take out the HDD inside. It could be a s-ata drive but more likely it's a eide drive . Set it as a slave drive and put it in your machine and see if you can recover your files that way (it should be recognised as a plain drive with all your files intact), Or just undo what you did with the original autorun Mybook files and try it again back in the case on USB. That is all that the big File Retrieval Co would do anyway

Hi

Well I thought I'd been sensible in backing up my data on to a Maxtor external drive. As dreaded my old machine went the way of all life and so I put together a replacement out of parts I've had sitting around for years. It works fine if slowly with an Asus A7N266-C mobo, AMD 1100 MHz processor (not lightning I know but it does what I need) and XP home. The machine works fine and has got me back online but the moment I connect the external drive directly through a USB port the PC hangs. It's really disappointing as I've got all my applications and pretty important data there. I've got everything up to date and drivers installed (I hope) and am pretty frustrated. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

My question has to do with my desktop which is currently non functional. I'm using my laptop to access the internet. I'm running Win7 home premium on my desktop. My question is; I made a mistake and did a reinstallation from my installation disk. I had previously created a clone of my system to an external drive. Now with the new installation, I cannot access the external drive. I moved the USB connector of the drive to my laptop and it recognized it and I could verify that the clone is there. How can I get the desktop to recognize the drive? I also checked the desktop folders and there is a folder labeled Windows.old that does contain all my original folders. I can't seed to be able to use that as an alternative. Any help would be appreciated.

I accidentally (a stupid thing) denied permissions to everybody on the external drive (dumb) and now I can not access the dr. I can not access the properties security tap. I downloaded a file "take ownership file", but doesn't work. It's my backup drive. can any body help? Also I tried to access on another computer, didn't work.

Answer:External Drive can't access

If you have data on this drive, boot a Puppy Linux usb stick or DVD and copy off all your data onto another media. I think Puppy Linux may include a function to NTFS format this drive; if not, you can usb or dvd boot any one of several partition management utilities to force out old partition and to bring in a new partition. I use Acronis Disk Director, however, there are several great choices. MiniTool Partition manager within MiniTool Power Data Recovery, free or fee, is another such utility.

My 1TB Western Digital External hard disc is not working. My laptop switched off suddenly while copying files. After restarted my laptop, when I try to open my External hard disc drive(G:\) I'm getting the message as
"Location is not available
G:\ is not accessible
The drive cannot find the sector requested"
The Properties of the drive shows as
Type: Local Disk
File system:
Used space : 0 bytes
Free space : 0 bytes
when clicking My computer->Manage->Disk Management(under Storage in left side), I can able to see my External hard disc drive(G:\). The File System shows as "RAW" before it was NTFS, % Free as 100% but I got around 1TB data. Also I checked in different laptops but it shows the same error.
And finally I checked with "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows", it passed the test.
I'm so afraid about my datas stored in the hard disc. All my projects, photos and many important files stored in that hard disc. I dont know what the problem is. I cant find any solutions in Internet. Please help me to solve this problem. Thanks in advance.

Answer:The drive cannot find the sector requested - External hard disc is not working

MSDN explains the cause for this The drive cannot find the sector requested message as:
The disk or floppy disk may be damaged, unformatted, or not compatible with the operating system.
It recommends the following:
Retry the command after you do one of the following:
(1) make sure the disk is properly inserted;
(2) use the Chkdsk utility to check that the disk is not damaged;
(3) format the disk or floppy disk for the appropriate file system (realize that when you format a disk, any information that was previously on the disk will be erased);
(4) check to make sure you do not have a high density floppy disk in a low density floppy drive.
Or else check it the drive itself is defective and contact the manufacturer if need be.

I'm running Win98SE...trying to attach a Maxtor external 200 GB hard drive.

I was able to partition the drive, but upon restart I get the error message "a device attached to the system is not functioning."

In "my computer" I can see the F: assigned to this drive, but can't open it. I think it still needs to be formatted, but I can't do that yet because all I get is that error message.

In searching online I find a variety of problems with this error message, but none seem to apply to this situation.

I'm having other software/error messages with this computer--just uninstalled Norton Cleansweep and that fixed some of it--but I'm stuck on the hard drive issue.

Ideas?

Answer:Can't access external hard drive

In My Computer, Right click on it and select "Format".

I am currently using Windows XP desktop and have a Seagate 250 GB external hard drive. I've been using it for the past few years, but it stopped working today. The problem is that even when the drive is plugged it, it does not show up in My Computer. I have gone to device manager, and when I plug in the drive, it shows up under disk drives, but it still does not show up under My Computer. I tried using it on a different computer, but the same error occured. Once time I used it the computer recognized it as a fixed drive, not an external hard drive, but even then I couldn't access anything on the disk. Is there anything i can do at this point?

I hate to do the standard response but I would also consider latest mother board drivers. That is what allows the board to communicate with Windows. I suspect you might have a different issue since you duplicated the problem, which is rare. But if the above fails..

I recently replaced my old PC with a new laptop that has Home Premium installed. To save my files I bought an external enclosure. I installed the drivers on a laptop with XP installed and I could access the files no problem.

Now however I've installed the same drivers (that were supplied with the enclosure) on Vista and cannot access the disc.

When I open it the bar at the top of the window slowly fills and then stalls out right before its full, meaning I can't access my files.

Am I missing a trick? Is there a secret method of accessing my files on the disc in Vista?

Hello!

I've just installed windows 7 today, so it's my first time using it.

Currently, I have a problem with my external hard drive because I can't access it in My Computer. It's being detected in the driver manager and computer management, but I don't know how I can get it to show up in my computer.

I MAY have accidently formatted it during windows installation, but I'm unsure. I would really like to retrieve my files!

I've attached a few screen shots to help with the explanation of my situation.

Thank you in advance for your help!! :D

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble with my external hard drive, a 2TB Western Digital My Passport. I error-checked my hard drive via My Computer -> Properties (on the external hard drive) -> Tools -> Check Now (under error checking). It took incredibly long, left it for about 12 hours and it had only scanned maybe 5% of the hard drive so therefore I cancelled it. After I did this, it no longer appeared in My Computer any more, however it did pop up once or twice and hasn't since.

I've checked and updated all of my drives using Device Manager so I'm confident that there is no issue there. I can see the disk in Disk Management but it says unallocated or that it needs to be initialised, I can't really do anything there without running into an error such as "The request could not be performed because of an I/O error".

I've used tools such as WD Lifeguard, Minitool and WinHEX but I cannot access the disk in order to scan it. I am confident that this is not a physical issue with the drive but instead maybe the beginning of the drive has been corrupted.

Can anyone help me? I'm really desperate...

Thanks so much in advance.

In this case, it is a laptop's harddrive in a usb caddy.
I plug it into the usb socket of this VAIO computer with Windows XP Home Edition.
The computer knows that a 'usb mass storage device' had been plugged in, and I have the option to 'Safely Remove Hardware'.
Question is, where is the option to access this drive?
I don't see it in My Computer.
I'm sure this disk caddy didn't come with any installation cd.

thank you!
