Preferred Solution: Windows Operating system doesn't work. Can I get some help please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows Operating system doesn't work. Can I get some help please?

Are you using Windows Phone or desktop Windows? Which version of Windows Phone or Windows are you using?

Yesterday I tried to start my computer like I do any other day, but today when I started it, I couldn't open start (nor use windows key to do so) search bar didn't work only some of the icons worked. There is also some blank spaces where it seems there used to be icons oh and did I mention that the whole taskbar freezes after 5 minutes. Task manager doesn't work if I right-click on the desktop and press Personalize/Display settings they give me an error message (ms-settings:personalization_background

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.
Same thing for Display settings except for the title which is: ms-settings:display). Settings refuses to open, but task manager just give me the Not responding message for all eternity. If somebody knows what to do help will be greatly appreciated! :)

Hiya,

Firstly I should say that I am primarily a mac user, and it is not my laptop I am posting about. Although I am reasonably knowledgable about Windows, I haven't used it since XP, about four years ago, and so am pretty rusty.

Basically, my girlfriends computer randomly turned off about a week ago, she assumed it was a dead battery, plugged it in, and then when it turned back on it wouldn't boot displaying error message: missing operating system.

As it is a Dell laptop it didn't come with any installation discs, and I totally forgot to even make a repair disc when we got the laptop. I managed to get hold of a Windows 7 Installation Disc and license key for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit through my university. I think the laptop was previously running Windows 7 Home Premium, but that's all I know, and I'm not entirely sure of that fact.

Anyway, burnt the .iso to disc and have tried to boot several times from DVD Drive. The laptop loads the files from the DVD fine, and gets as far as the "Starting Windows" screen, where it seems to get stuck for a few minutes, until it becomes a black screen with just a cursor (the cursor still moves). This also happens with an 64 bit repair DVD I also managed to get hold of.

Any ideas on what I should or can do next?

Thanks

I had to download the updated drivers for my computer that has windows 2000 loaded on another computer. The drivers were too big to copy to a 3 1/4 floppy, so I copied the drivers to a cd disc. When I try to update the drivers using the cd disc, the pop up screen say "this is not a valid mfg hardware update." I know they are valid because I copied them from the mfg website. How can I get these drivers installed in c:\winnt folder since the first place the installation looks for is files that are under this particular folder first and then ask if you have disk. Any help will be gladly apppreciated. Thanks

Hi ja50us, Welcome to TSG !!

I did the exact same thing. I downloaded the new drivers for mine to CD (video, MB, audio, nic, etc.). I opened device manager, Right clicked the device I wanted, selected properties. Clicked on update driver, Then pointed to the cd. Found the driver and installed it. Did that for each one.

When I try system restore it doesn't work. I get an error message Oxc0000022 or 0xc0000022

Answer:Windows 7 System restore doesn't work

What happened that caused you to want to use system restore in the first place ? In the past I have found that system restore rarely works when you really need it.

Hi
My computer crashed whiles I was updating Firefox and downloading an online game from steam.
I was given the blue screen of death but I restarted my computer and login in as normal per user name, a messaged appeared saying that windows had recovered from a serious error. I have tried to roll back using system restore but the dates it has given me is not working and saying its incomplete every time.
When I login on my computer the same error message appears but no blue screen.
Has windows ended that support for windows xp?
Is there any way around this except moving to another operating system as my computer is quite old it wouldn't have enough space and memory to handle it.

Answer:System restore doesn't work on Windows XP

"Has windows ended that support for windows xp?"
No, it has nothing to do with that. The support that has ended is the Security Updates. Nothing else was ever supported unless you had a contract with MS.
Have you tried unplugging all extras - printer and anything attached by usb and unplug the ethernet cable (internet) - then booting up into Safe Mode and trying the System Restore.

Every time I leave my computer on, inactive, for a long time it freezes so I am forced to turn the power off. But when I try to start it up again Windows loads up until the point where it says: "Welcome" and just freezes. I started the system repair disk, and when I choose "Recover" a list of restore points appears just fine. It's until the system restore its done running that it gives me a message saying:"System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source %SystemRoot%\registrarionDestination: ComPlusStaging"I have tried several different restore points but I get the same result. I've also tried to use System Image but every time I try to make an image it also fails! I have ran my antivirus software several times and nothing. I can, however, run my computer in safe mode. And running the "last know configuration that worked" also worked. But it's the inability to create any safety nets that I am concerned about. Any light you can shed on this I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.PS.I don't have the installation CD

Answer:Windows 7 System Restore Doesn't Work

This honestly sounds like a bug within your current Windows 7 installation. If its throwing out that error while trying to do a restore then it sounds like Windows 7 has corruptions in it, in more than one spot. What I would do is either format the hard drive and use the system restore CD to re-install the operating system, or.. if you have data on it you need to keep, purchase a new hard drive and install it on there.

Several weeks ago the phone went thru a software update. since then many functions have stopped working, connecting wifi, etc. The most annoying is the volume doesn't work when I make a phone call. The call is received by the other party but they can't hear me talking and my phone makes no noise during the call. Setting the alarm will not make any noise, no noise is made when any functions are used.

Ok guys, I'm new here. Anyway, I need my computer for school. While I was looking up stuff for my English class, one of my programs (I can't remember which one, Java maybe or maybe the Automatic Windows Update one or w/e) said it had finished downloading files and needed to reboot. I did so. When it started back up again I noticed the Bar at the top that has like Music and you click on it and it pops up shortcuts to icons wasn't there. I looked up how to bring it back and none of the stuff worked. So I decided to do a system restore to a few days before and then I would just reinstall those updates. Problem solved right? I thought so too.

Now when I started up again I noticed that my McAfee Virus protection, IM protection and I believe Email protection was off. They were ON before the System Restore and OFF after. Well I tried to turn them ON. Both clicking them on Manually and clicking the FIX button. Everytime it says, Action could not be performed due to an error. I tried to run a scan but it couldn't. I thought, "Oh no a virus is in McAfee :O:O:O" :cry:cry I tried to access my internet but everytime it says "Loading..." on the tab and within .000001 of a second. It turns to (Invalid) or something. I don't have the infected computer close by so I can't post what it actually says. I checked the internet and tried to troubleshoot it but there are NO PROBELMS DETECTED. So now I know it must be a virus.

New Acer Aspire, but I pitched the box, so can't return it. Anyway, It initially worked fine for about a week, including Windows Update. Got to a point where every window would say (Not Responding) and resources were maxed out. I couldn't isolate the problem and didn't have any valuable info on the laptop yet. So I did a complete System Restore back to OEM spec.
I tether to my cellphone for internet. So I installed drivers and Access Manager for that. I go into Windows Update and click to check for updates. It runs for about 20 seconds then disconnects from the internet and pops up an error code. I've gone through all the steps that can be run down there.
SP1 is not installed yet.
I'm at a loss here and need help, I'm not tech/nerd savvy, but I'm not computer shy either.

So I had a huge crash after upgrading to 10, couldn't repair anything and after 5 hours of trying just wiped everything and started anew (it was time anyway didn't do that for 3 years). I installed 8 again, had that running for 2 days (because i really had enough of installing anything ). Now i got sick of that and upgraded back to 8.1 from the Store. Download was complete and i restarted the Computer and now i'm stuck at "Loading Operating System..."
What can i do now? I already tried loading from the CD again and going back before the Upgrade but nothing changed.
Is there any way i can fix this without having to wipe everything out again (its not like there is that much on already but i really don't want to spend another 12 hours downloading programs and games again)?

Thanks in advance
Sebastian

Small Update:
Now i did format and reinstall the whole thing but i'm still stuck in the loading screen. I didn't change a thing with my hardware during any of this except for getting my SSD out to take a few folders out before erasing everything.

I bought a nice Seagate Expansion 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 a few months back. I have diligently made a couple of System Images which were copied this new drive (which I named Drive Q).

I now need to do a System Restore, using my System Repair Disk. The disk booted up just fine, but when it looked for my System Images, it wouldn't recognize the Drive! I've come to the conclusion that it's because the new External Drive is USB 3!

I have a perfectly good System Image that I now can't restore! I really need to restore it.

What can I do?!!

I have a 4y old Sony VAIO (VGN-NS11J) that stopped working today morning after making a whirring noise

Repeated attempts to restart failed and after many attempts, I managed to get to the Startup Repair mode - after a long time, startup repair says it failed to automatically repair the problem

I managed to run system restore but after a while I got the following message: "System restore failed due to an unspecified error. The disk strucgture is corrupted and unreadable (0X80070571)

My laptop did not come with a Windows Vista CD/Recovery disk

My first priority is to recover a few files in the laptop - if I am able to do this, then I dont mind junking the laptop

Since this is an old laptop, I would prefer not to use an expensive professional to recover the data

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hi everyone hoping you can help me out.
I have just formatted an old IDE drive connected to my computer - and when i restarted I recieved an error: "Boot MGR is missing" press CTRL ALT DEL to restart.

Obviously i forgot that when i installed Windows XP around 6 months ago that the boot manager was on the drive i just formatted and therefore have deleted the boot manager.
Consequently i cannot boot into my newly installed windows 7 or windows XP.

My next move was to put my windows 7 disk in the drive and use the repair utility. However my problem lies when i come to the menu: "Select an operating system that you want to repair" - I have neither windows XP or windows 7 available to select i.e. there are no options. Despite this, when use the option "if your operating system isn't listed, click load drivers" - all of my hard drives are then listed.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

p.s i tried the XP recovery utility also - but when i select which the system to repair - it asks for an administrators password - which it keeps claiming is incorrect when i enter it but i swear it not. weird.

Thanks

Answer:Startup repair menu doesn't see an operating system

Mark WIn7 or it's 100mb System Reserved partition (preferred if you have it) Active, boot the WIn7 DVD System Recovery Options or System Repair Disk, click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots.

To Mark Partition Active press Shift F10 at first screen when booting DVD or Repair CD, or choose Command Line from Repair Console's Recov Tools list, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (confirm from list this is WIn7 HD #)
LIST PARTITION
SELECT PARTITION # (replace # with WIn7 part #)
ACTIVE
EXIT

Now return to Recov Tools list to run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times with reboots to write MBR to Win7.

If this fails everything possible that can be done is here for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.

Issue started from the past few days. Did a fresh install of Windows, since then the device has issues during startup. The device will either freeze with windows logo on it or i get a black screen. However if I access BIOS utility during startup, the device boots properly and I will be able to access the login screen.  Found no issues during hardware scan using lenovo solutions center. Even installing using Windows 8 recovery media and upgrading it to windows 10 has not helped either - I face similar issue with windows 8 reinstalled using recovery media provided by the manufacturer. Any solutions will be welcome. Thanks in advance.

I've got a nasty infection here but I don't know what kind of infection. Doesn't show it's face too often, maybe once every hour, sometimes more, and opens me a new tab in Firefox (I've read from other people that they've had pop-ups, but that could be because I won't allow Firefox to open more then one screen). The ads are from two companies: one called Calivary (selling ringtones I guess) and one called VergelijkenKoop.nl (Dutch for 'compare and buy'). I don't think they have much to do with the virus and it's just an affiliate program but maybe it helps. Found out about the infection because of the ads of course but I also failed to start ConnectifyMe which I use to create wireless internet in my home. Doesn't run all the time, only when I really want to use it. I also can't use System Restore and RootRepeal. Hello everybody. What's a nice day, I'm glad to see you etc...
Yesterday evening : my main browser (Comodo Dragon) coudn't catch the connection to Internet in spite of the fact my laptop 'said' it was connected. I tried Internet Explorer - and there wasn't any problem.
But after using, Internet Explorer jammed so hard that I had to turn off my laptop and turn on again. After 15-30 minutes the same situation. So I turned off and turned on - and the same again. But there was a catch : I coudn't turn on it after turning off.
While I was trying to turn on it system told me about problems with Windows (and maybe with volumes). So i turned off and turned on again. There was a grey screen. And no way to reach the Windows. I took my battery of the laptop, waited 2 minutes and tried to run my laptop. Grey screen. I went to bed.
Today the same situation. So I tried with Linux (pendrive) but Linux Mint had also some problems, so the problem isn't only in Windows I guess. Answer:Problem with turning on the computer, doesn't matter which operating system

Alright can you describe the grey screen are there words, errors , your mouse cursor on the screen or is it just a plain Grey screen. I don't think this is a ddos attack if it was you should call you local authorities as it is illegal. Now try to run malwarebytes antimalware and it should pop up with a screen saying if you want to start a trial for 14 days if you don't want to just select no (gives you the exact same scanning ability) and then update your database and run a threat scan tell me what it finds and after that run a full scan with your antivirus and tell me what it finds.

Hi everyone, I'll keep it short and to the point.

What I had initially:

Quote:
120 GB hardisk divided into 3 partitions.
1st partition (22.2GB) with XP, second partition (30GB) with win 7 and rest (60 GB) as mass memory for storage.

What I did:

Quote:
Installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS desktop 32 bit with USB on the partition which had XP.
For that I had to format it and convert to ext4 and also create a swap memory of ~3GB.
Thus I finally have 1 partition with ubuntu another with win 7 and another with mass memory.

Now, Problem:

MBR got damaged as win XP partition was formatted (which had bootloader) and thus I can't login to win 7 from Ubuntu Grub.

To solve this problem I had to create a USB recovery disk for win7. But now the problem is even after using bootrec command which gave sucess result for fixmbr, fixboot, scanos and rebuildbcd i am not able to boot into win 7. The computer just hangs after bootup with a blinking cursor.

So what should I do now ??

Answer:MBR damaged and Win7 System Recovery menu doesn't see an operating sys

Hello everyone.
I have a Gateway Desktop PC that came with a Microsoft Windows Vista
Operating System Disc, to my surprise. I have a HP laptop that needs a
new HDD, I'll be getting one in a few days. Can I use the Gateway Vista
disc on my HP laptop when I get the new HDD? My laptop has a Vista license key, and both the PC and laptop have the Home Premium 32bit version.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Will Operating System disc work on another brand?

Yes, as long as you are using the key that is on the machine. However, sometimes, HP will require an HP install disc, so it's a crap shoot.

After I put the disc in and restarted my computer, I chose the option "Full System Restore (destructive)." After I chose it, it said "Formatting hard disk partion in NTFS file system... Please Wait" After a few mins of that it just restarted and nothing was changed. Is the disc broken or is there something else wrong?

Answer:Operating system disc doesnt work

You tried only once?

System manufacturer and model?

No error message of any type?

Hello,

A friend of my daughters has a packard bell pc (4 years old). After ridding various virus from the machine and coming to a full stop they decided to use the restore disc (red floppy) and restore to factory default - all appeared to be going well. Machine froze after telling them to remove the floppy, when it came back to life it requested master cd1, which they dont have and dont remember ever having (bearing in mind machine is 4 years old).

What do you think the best track would be to contact packard bell for master disc. I wondered whether my copy of xp home would work with their pc and their code - afterall they have purchased the machine etc. or am I being totally blonde. I am quite happy to reformat for them if this is a possibility but dont want to attempt it if there is the possibility it wont work. I realised xp is one machine one copy but not sure whether this is reliant on code or not.

Advice, please.

Did you format before you reinstalled Windows or did you just reinstall Windows? If you just reinstalled Windows without formatting, your programs may still be there under the Program Files directory. If you formatted (erased) before reinstalling, your programs are gone Did they give you an Applications disc with your computer?

I was trying to recover/reinstall win 7 and bring back my asus laptop to its manufacture state. When I run the recovery media (recovery dvd) that comes with my asus laptop and after answering the prompts, it gives off "missing operating system" message on an entirely black screen. I tried to go to the bios setting by hitting delete key upon boot-up but it does not respond. I switched off and back on several times trying the delete key every time but to no avail. Please help. It's an ASUS N61J Series with intel i7. I need this very badly! Thanks...

Answer:missing operating system, del key does not work going to bios setting

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Have you tried using the computer's recovery partition as it sounds as though the recovery disc may be corrupted?

To use the recovery partition you need to start your computer and tap the F8 key then select the repair computer option from the advanced boot menu. Follow the prompts to format your drive and restore your computer to its factory state.

Hello,

I just reinstalled Vista with the factory Reinstallation DVD that came with the computer (Dell Inspiron 1525) and now I can't get the WI-FI to work. "Network adapters" does not appear in the Device Manager. From what I've read, it seems as though I need to install the wireless/WIFI drivers, but there are three problems: 1) The Dell support site with the drivers doesn't seem to be working (please provide direct link if you can get a working one. 2) I don't know EXACTLY what drivers to download. 3) I don't know how to install the drivers once downloaded (from what I've read, it's apparently not as simple as just double-clicking and installing.

Your help would be greatly appreciated, as this is my cousin's computer that I'm helping him with.

THANK YOU!

I have a Dell Latitude 13 7350 2 in 1 running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and I'm trying to install the multi-touch drivers from the Dell site which are listed as version 10.1207.101.113 ,A06 and compatible with Win10 x64 however when I run the installer I get the error 'This software is not compatible with your operating system.  Click Ok to exit setup'
I've tried downloading again in case it was a corrupt download but same on the second attempt, I've extracted the files and run the Vi64\DPinst.exe install which seemed to work fine although I'm not seeing any difference in control panel, the mouse version isn't updated and I'm not seeing any applet for the touchpad to configure it (although I know that's not always the case now).
Any tricks for running the installer and is it possible to get more options to customise the touchpad?  The main problem is simply that I want to disable the pinch to zoom.

Updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 two weeks ago.
Had problems with Firefox.  Tried to download to replace existing Firefox.  CNET site appeared to be correct but something seemed wrong so I killed the download. But.
- The windows start menu doesn't come up when I click on the icon, but if I right-click, a text menu does appear and lets me, for example, shut down.
.- If I click on the Windows End icon in the task bar, the screen flashes but End does not come up.  Ditto for the Windows Store icon.
-  Somewhere SpyBot S&D was erased, but I was able to download it.
- If I double-click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I get a popup that lists the name of the jpeg and says Invalid Entry to Registry.  If I right click on the photo and go to any of the options the photo is opened except if I choose Photo.
- Firefox cannot properly display the Yahoo mail page, though Pale Moon and Opera can.
- I have Avast Anti-Virus and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and when I run their scans, they find no issues.

SO there are a few issues that I need help with.

Answer:windows 10 problems - start menu doesn't appear, windows key doesn't work, etc

Hello,
Well the first thing you should try is to Run System Restore to before all of these problems started or to when you first installed Windows 10.
Then try to download Firefox from there website
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
Third thing is I would recommend to get rid of Avast it is low end and could be allowing virus I recommend ether McAfee or Norton Security.

Those are some things to think about
but it is all up to you when making your final decision

It's hard to explain, but here's what happened. I thought I was having audio problems, so I did a system recovery (on a Samsung R480 only a month old). Since I did the system recovery, everything is messed up. I will open Yahoo Messenger and I have pictures but no words. I cannot log into my gmail because I have boxes but now words. If I try to open a Microsoft Word document the computer does a dump and restarts. It's just totally messed up now. For some reasons I have no restore points at all, and I thought restore was automatically on. The Samsung guy said I could still make a backup and use it. I wasn't sure how that was going to work, because I'd be backing up the crap system, not the good system, but he's the 'expert' so I did what he said. And sure enough, all I did was make a backup of the bad system. Is there anything I can do to restore my computer to factory condition since I have no restore points and System Recovery 4 is what put it in this funky state in the first place....and obviously I have no operating disks like everyone used to get with all computers. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello, I need help. My niece downloaded a windows 7 ultimate and installed it on her computer on a website called demonod.com (I am not sure of the name of the website.) The problem is the 30 day activation is almost over and I don't know what will happen next. I wanted to use the recovery partition disk on the computer to return the computer to original state, but it does not work. I activated the recovery partition restart the computer and pressed F11 but it does not work. I really suspect it is some kind of malware that came with the windows 7 ultimate.

I did all the preparation test but combofix will not run neither rootrepeal. So did a GMER scan instead.

I just installed ThinkVantage SU 4.03 on a ThinkPad T420 today but when I launch it all I get is the splash logo, which quickly disappears, and then nothing happens. This laptop is running Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit. What am I missing?

Answer:System Update doesn't work

'evening.

are you trying to launch TVSU right after you start up your machine?
if so, TVSU relies on a service with a Startup Type set to Automatic (Delayed Start). i have no idea how long "delayed" equates to.

on my newer machines, if i launch TVSU and the service isn't yet running, it'll immediately get started, the splash will disappear and the UI will pop up. on one older machine, also running Win7x64sp1 and TVSU4.03, it doesn't successfully start the service. it acts as you describe, the splash screen disappears and the app fails to launch.

i tried to track down the issue, but in the end, decided it was easier to simply set the service to start Automatically rather than Delayed.

regards.

Good day,
I went to do a backup after last W7 update. The external SATA drive was not recognized. Found it inactive and without a drive letter and set them. Unit works on other computers with a USB. Ran a sfc /scannow with errors that couldn't be corrected. Attempted a restore which after reboot fails. Did a system image restore to a preupdate version (Paragon), apparently successfully. sfc still shows errors.
I am asking if I should go directly to the update section and do the MS download and gather the CBS.log?
Oh an of course lost the registration for the W10 download.
Thanks for pointing me in a correct direction!

Without any response, I went on with the Update thread on the SURT and CBS.logs. Then realized I might as well try and fix the latest Paragon System Image Restore (marked HopefulC:\). Got the Windows 10 registration back and my emails. Reran the SURT and sfc /scannow. sfc still indicating it has corrupted files...
Would appreciate any help!!

I have a HP Pavillion dv2910us, and I need to perform a system recovery on my laptop. I?ve tried to press F11 when the computer boots up, and nothing happens except it makes a loud beep sound and continues on its way starting up. So when that didn?t work, I came to the HP site to look up another way to possibly perform a system recovery that I didn?t know. I found that I can open the Recovery Manager from my start menu and perform the operation from there. I tried about 15 times, following the exact steps that were given to me, and even another way I found in the forum. All that happens is my computer restarts and I log in to my account and it?s the same as it was before. I really need to perform this system recovery. I?ve already moved the files I need to save to an external hard drive, and I just really need to fix this problem. What am I doing wrong, or how can I restore my laptop to factory settings in another way? Additional info: My product number is FE989UA#ABA and serial is 2CE8200Y5Q.Message Edited by racket on 07-24-2009 10:36 PM

Here's the story. I own 2 Emachines PCs. I bought another used Emachines system for my son. When it arrived, it worked fine, but the OS was all in French. I tried changing the language settings, but that did absolutely nothing. So, I decided to try using my recovery disk that I use for my other 2 systems. I do a full system recovery, but it's STILL in French. So, I figure I'll put the HD in my own PC, and reformat it. All goes according to plan, the drive formats normally, and then I put it back in the other system, and try to restore again. It seemed to work fine, and was actually IN ENGLISH!!, yet after the recovery finished, and the system rebooted, it won't start up. It tells me that the file SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\NTFS.SYS is missing. I put the drive back in my other PC, and had a look in the drive, and sure enough, that file is missing. What would me next move be? I'm completely lost. If the restore CD isn't putting that file on the disk, why not? Here's the details of the PCPentium 42 gig512 meg RAM160 gig HDWindows XP

Hi everyone, this is my first post so please be gentle if I break protocol or seem stupid or something. >_> <_<

Anyway, I'm having a really frustrating problem...I tried uninstalling a program with Windows Install Cleanup, but it didn't get all the files apparently - it was still showing up in the start menu and Programs and Features. Well, I thought, no big deal, I'll just do a system restore to before I installed it (I was trying the program out and I didn't like it, so it was only a couple days ago) but now I've run into a bigger problem...

I try to do system restore, and it seems to go fine, but when the computer reboots it tells me:

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

System Restore failed to extract the file (C:\ProgramData\Trusteer\Rapport\store) from the restore point.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070005)"

I've tried 3 different restore points and keep getting this same message, although sometimes the file it can't extract is C:\ProgramData\Trusteer\Rapport\store\app-config.cfg

Please help! I don't know what to do now. The program's "ghost" is still on my computer, but that's not nearly as worrisome as the inability to system restore at this point. What should I do?

Answer:System Restore Doesn't Work?

Hello,

To fix this problem you should downloaded Rapport again directly from here:

Or from our website www.trusteer.com

Once you have installed and restarted the computer the System restore should work.

Answer:System Recovery doesn't work

Run Startup Repair 3 times, rebooting between each try.

What did you try with the recovery DVD? Did you start to reinstall Windows? If so, you may have deleted the data that was on the computer.

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

In trying to solve a problem I've been having with VPN (I think? see post here), I've tried to use System Restore in order to go back to a working configuration. Problem is, for some reason, System Restore refuses to restore my system. Every time I try to go back to a restore point, the computer shuts down, restarts, ostensibly tries to restore ths system -- I see a meter going up indicating how long it has left to restore the system -- but then just boots back up with a cryptic "System Restore was not able to restore your system. No changes have been made" message. How can I get this to work? Thanks.

Delete the value DisableConfigDelete the value DisableSR
3. Exit the Registry Editor.
In Windows XP Professional, you can accomplish the above using Group Policy Editor as well.
1. Click Start, Run and type GPEDIT.MSC
2. Navigate to this path:
-> Computer Configuration
--> Administrative Templates
---> System
----> System Restore3. Set Turn off System Restore to Not Configured
4. Set Turn off Configuration to Not Configured
Problem is, itried to delete the DisableSR but it dosent delete and Disableconfig isnt even there..

I installed a volcano 12 heatsink and fan tonight, and thought everything went OK. I haven't done any overclocking yet.

But I seem to be rebooting every few minutes, and I am getting all kinds of windows error messages coming (internet explorer).

Did I mess up my CPU?

If anyone can help me out with a checklist of what I should be looking at, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

My father just switched from dial-up to broadband. When the broadband is connected, the computer starts trying to send out an endless amount of emails. The funny thing is that we can still use dial-up without the flood of emails. I downloaded Norton Internet Security 2007 and have everything up to date. There were several infections/trojans detected and, supposedly, removed. I tried to do a system restore, but I keep getting the messages "Restoration Incomplete" and "No changes have been to your computer". I opened up System Properties to try to turn system restore on and then off again, but it won't give me the option. On top of this, we now get about 10 attempted Portscan intrusions per day. I'm at a total loss!

Answer:System Restore doesn't work

In such situations, I'd suggest saving all your data and doing a clean install of Windows if you feel confident in that.

Hello, I've just found this forum and I can see there's a lot of people willing to help, so I decided to make myself an account and ask for your help. Several months ago, I had a trouble with some malware, that won't let me see anything in the desktop and told me I needed to buy some software to help me restore my system. Anyway I get rid of it by downloading Malware Bytes Anti-malware and letting it work. Since then I haven't too much problems, until a month ago, when my computer started to freeze, and I noticed. Some strange archives, like hidding folders and stuff like that. However I was too busy to do something about. So today I decided to use malware bytes anti-malware to kill those guys. So first of all, I downloaded the new version of the program and updated the database, but the installer get freezed, so I finished the process and restart the program, and everything went okay for a while. I decided to make a complete scan, and after 3 hours, I get the results. I got 5 suspicious archives, but when I tried to eliminate them, it gets frozen again, so I restart the program again and initiate a fast scan, which only reported 1 malware, so I use the eliminate button, and after a while it tells me that I have to restart the system. I was doing homework, so I saved my archives and everything, and then restarted the system. But in the process, a Blue Screen of Death appears after the boot options and get me to a repair system menu, and then appears a message, that the system... Read more

I ran some ad remover software (ad-aware) and now i have two problems

1) everytime i start windows i get an error that say's failed to run windows/image.dll

2) my system restore doesn't work. when i try to open it i get
Entry point REmoteAccesssysterestore not found in dynamic link library WINSTA.dll

anyone have a clue on what to do?

Thanks

Answer:System restore doesn't work

Restore what you deleted from the AdAware backup. Maybe it will put the association back. The downside is that it will also restore whatever adware you were trying to get rid of in the first place. That may, or may not, work. Maybe it's worth a try, though. If it does work, there are other ways to get rid of that particular piece of adware/spyware besides AdAware.

If that fails, post back. There are some command line restorations that can be done.

Hi! I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 running XP Professional.  I have plenty of memory (M), plenty of available hard drive space (50 GB) and a non-working system restore feature.  It did work until about 2 months ago.  When I attempt to use it it goes through the restart and then says that it cannot restore my machine.  No matter which highlighted date I select, I get the same response.  I've increased the memory space for it, I've tried manually creating restore points--always the same response.  HELP!!!                                                                                                                       Eric

I run XP in a Dell Inspiron with Norton AntiVirus. I tried System Restore a week ago, but it didn't work. It ran but at the end I got the error message that it didn't complete and couldn't restore to the earlier point. It displayed the red "X." I deleted all of the restore points and set the amount of store to the maximum and set a new restore point. Still it didn't complete. I also ran Malwarebytes - it couldn't find any issues.

I tried it in Safe Mode and it worked - it set the new point and renamed three files - two of them were Norton files, the third I didn't recognize. I set a new point and again it DID NOT COMPLETE - I got the same error message!!

Sorry for the long message, but I wanted you to know I already tried some troubleshooting. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have just purchased a new HP PC running Vista Home Premium. I have had major problems with the new system, one of which is that System Restore won't work properly. It will load (after about 5 minutes) and will create a new restore point but, when I try restore to an earlier time, it goes through the motions for about 10 to 15 minutes but fails to restore. I get a message saying that due to an error (unspecified) no files were changed. Can anybody help please?

In early January, I made a post about a restore problem. Thought that it was cleared up. I am unable to acess any of my or XP's restore points. When I went to restore to an earlier date. All appeared to be going as it should. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted? If I need an HJT Log let me know and I'll repost.

Answer:System Restore Doesn't Work

Is system restore turned ON and configured?

System restore sometimes has problems with proprietary chipset drivers; ie drivers written for a big box system.

FWIW system restore is pretty useless; a MUCH better option is to make an image backup of your system drive. With the price of hard drives so cheap AND the image software being free, there is no reason to not have an image backup.

My Win 7 was installed in February 2010 and at first I could use System Restore without problems. However, after some time it stopped working due to unknown reasons and now when I try to do a System Restore it looks as if it is going to be OK, but when it restarts I see the following error message:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

System Restore failed while mounting the registry from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x800703f1)

You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try advanced recovery method. For more information, see What is Recovery?

I tried to fix it by doing the following things:

it returns the following message:

Hi guys,

I'm running windows 7 pro 64-bit and whenever my asus U31F goes into hibernate and i try to system resume, it takes over 5 minutes. The screen freezes on just saying system resume for a minute or two, then as the coloured balls that come in to make the windows logo - they come in frame by frame, pausing for ages on each frame. This whole process means i have to hard reset my computer if i need it quickly and is really really starting to annoy me. Is there anything i can do???

Note: On further inspection - i've realised that the drive doesn't start spinning while the screen is freezed, and then when it does that's aboutwhen they balls start to come into the screen.

Any insight would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Answer:System resume doesn't work!

Welcome to Seven Forums Longy99.

Using hibernate will sometimes corrupt files upon resuming. You might try Sleep instead and it should wake nearly instantly, saving what you were doing when it went to sleep.
Run sfc /scannow
Hibernate also creates a big, 2-10GB, hiberfil file too. You can try this: Hibernate - Enable or Disable to disable Hibernate, or re enable it if you still want to use it.

I got rid of all the viruses I had using some handy tools I found and now whenever I do a scan, no threats or viruses of any kind are found, as opposed to the 3-4 that were always detected when I did certain scans. I thought this was the problem with my PC which for some reason didnt allow me to create a restore point using System Restore. But now, even when it seems to be clean and uninfected (this is not 100% fully confirmed, I'm about to do a Kasperspy thorough online scan to see what it detects if anything), it still doesnt allow me to create a restore point. I'm thinking there must be something wrong with my system registry or something. Is there anything I can do? Need your help please!

hi there,
I've been lurking the forums for a couple weeks now trying to find a way to fix my pc. The problem is that i don't even know whats wrong with it. I have tried multiple ways to fix it. ive tried the system repair and that doesn't work. i created the system repair disk and that doesnt work either. either it doesnt work or i dont know how to use it. i created the disc, then i restarted my computer. i press f12 the boot dvd/cd-rw then it loads it and says the files are corrupted or damaged and thats it. any help in helping me restore my cpu to factory setting?
on a side note no virus protector i install picks up on the problem since it still persist even after multiple scans. when i run my cpu in safe mode it seems like the problem isnt there since my web browser runs smoothly in safe mode.
i forgot to mention the problem which is my cpu runs the internet pretty slow and some games that require connection to the internet. i had forgotten to make a system restore backup so no luck there. Can anyone help me?

Do this download and run malwarebytes, do the long scan and update before using. This is not the same as the anti virusl

Dead Vista Home/Prem x64 system, won't boot. Booting off disc, try to run sfc /scannow, I get "windows resource protection could not start the repair service". Obviously there's no way to run an elevated command prompt from booting off the disc. Tried "install now" and the upgrade option is greyed out and says do the upgrade from inside windows (obviously this isn't an option either). I've tried repairing with a SP0, SP1, and SP2 disc. System restore, no dice. Re-installing Vista, at this juncture is not an option. I cannot believe Microsoft made Vista (and for that matter, Server 2008) SO FRAGILE that you can't repair the system properly. If this was XP it would have been done by now. If anyone has any ideas, no matter how insane (keeping in mind what I've already posted above, of course) then please let me know. Thank you.

I recently installed new hard-drives, 1 master and 1 slave. I still have all of my data from the new drive transfer, I can install and run programs on my new drive, but some of existing applications aren't working properly.

The most critical is my problem with " System Restore". Everytime I run System Restore from the Start Menu > Accessories > ... , I get the pop up for debugging it. The pop up is the grey box that says "Send Error Report or Don't Send". While it was working I used it everyday, but now it always crashes when I open it up. What happens if something bad happens to my PC, how will I be able to restore my PC to an earlier secure stage? Please help me, it's critical that I get use of my System Restore back again. Do I have to reinstall WinXP again or what?

Microsoft Word keeps telling me to "repair" the program everytime I open up a word document. Now, I'm able to open up a word document, read it, edit and save. But when I open them up it also talks about the repair, a "Windows Installer" box pops up, then disappears, afterwards telling me to reinstall\repair Word 10.0 or something like that because there's an error in Microsoft Office. Should I reinstall\repair my Microsoft Office CDs?

First time poster here.

I'm running Win7 Home Premium 64bit. When I try to do a System Restore, it seems to run to completion, reboots the system and then issues the following message:

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed."

Same result in Safe mode.
Same result with AV disabled. (Kaspersky Internet Security 12)

Advice??

Thanks, Tom

Answer:Win7 HP 64b system restore doesn't work

Hello Toadstoll Welcome to the Seven Forums!

Would this be on a custom build where you installed Windows yourself or on an OEM premade system?

The most likely problem you ran into was a bad restore point. That can happen on occasion when you only have one or two depending the time of the month and seeing the older ones automatically being cleaned up.

Every so often a bad point is created where choosing the next older if found would be the next step. That would be the first suggestion to start with by opening the restore option again to see how many points are still seen to try another to go back a little further to see if that goes well on the next try.

Other things like running the System File Checker tool can help with minor problems. But if you are stuck trying to remove a new program tracking down entries in the system registry can be tricky at times for seeing it manually removed.

I'm trying to do a system restore without success. It goes through the motions but after it restarts always say "cannot use restore point, no changes have been made to your system". I'm trying to correct a font setting change that happened without my knowledge. Any suggestions?

Answer:Microsoft Office System doesn't work

Hi,

Is this a laptop? Did Office come pre-installed with the laptop? If not, what is the source of the Office installation?

Hi all
I wanted to do a system restore but it didn't work.
My computer has two hard drives, C:\ and D:\ and a CD drive E:\, I also plug a portable hard drive into it from time to time that shows up as F:\.
So I try to run system restore and it brings up a warning that it will not be able to change anything on F: because it is no longer available (I think that was the massage, something like that anyway), okay it was not plugged into the computer so I click to go ahead with the restore. The computer looks like it's doing its restore thing, tha bar graph runs and all but when it should be finished it tells me nothing was changed so pick an earlier restore dat and try again so I did that, same F: drive warning, same results. I plug the portable disk in and try again, same thing.
How can I get the System Restore to work???

Thanks in advance

I got:
-Win98
-Crystal Audio (CS4235)
-Everything works - BUT

My .wav files will play through Media
Player just fine. MP3s too. However,
when sounds are assigned through
Windows for events, I get a clicking
repeat. Also, no sound SFX for DOOM,
etc. The music is ok.

Example: "ding-click, ding-click,
ding-click" etc.
(using the ding.wav system sound.)

I've checked and there are no conflicts,
reinstalled completely from cold boot.

Nothin'.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance ....
