Windows 10 Update Not Working, How Can I Get It Working?

Question: Windows 10 Update Not Working, How Can I Get It Working?

I hope this forum can help. I've tried several others. My Win 10 Update function is not working at all. There are over 100 updates saying "Waiting for Download." The progress bar stays at 0%, even when there is nothing else running at all.
I ran WindowsUpdateDiagnostic, and it said "service registration is missing or corrupt." It won't say which service it's talking about.
I ran SPF /scannow and it said no integrity violations.
I ran DISM /scanhealth, /checkhealth, and /restorehealth, and they said "no component store corruption detected" and "restore operation completed successfully."
I did all the steps in "Reset Windows Update Components" and they all completed successfully, but nothing changed except that the list of updates disappeared (they all reappeared as soon as I clicked on 'Updates are available).
A search on "service registration is missing or corrupt" shows that this is a common problem, but I've tried everything suggested, and nothing has helped with the problem.
The only advice that I haven't tried is to re-install Windows 10. I don't want to have to re-install MS Office, Kaspersky, etc.
Can anyone help with this?

Preferred Solution: Windows 10 Update Not Working, How Can I Get It Working?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Targus amu73ap mouse that was workinG perfectly with 8.1 is not working on either my PC or Asus T100 hybrid after the update to windows 10. I keep getting a message saying that the usb device malfunctioned.

Answer:Previously working USB device not recognized after Windows 10 update, how can I get it working?

You may need to try rolling back your USB drivers (or install the original drivers for your mouse from the manufacturer). I had a LAN driver get screwy with Win10 and I rolled it back to the original Win7 driver and it resolved the issue.

Hello,

I've got a Dell laptop here that isn't functioning properly. I can't get this to work for the life of me! I am currently using this laptop with a different hard drive, it's the install on the SSD that doesn't work. I know that the quick fix would be to simply reload windows, but I don't want the quick fix.

Basically, laptop works with Windows 7 install on a hard drive, no issues. On the SSD, where the ONLY applications loaded are Office 2013 and Firefox (and all the latest updates), the internet does not work (I can ping yahoo.com and get a response, so DNS is fine). The problem persists on IE and Firefox. I have no AV software other than MSE, and the problem persists in Safe Mode w/ networking. The hosts file is clean. The internet worked on the computer just fine when I loaded it, I hadn't used the SSD in a while and when I popped it in, the internet wasn't working. I believe something is getting in the way of port 80, but I can't figure out what. I have disabled all startup applications and all nonwindows services. The computer does not have bonjour. I have cleared history/cookies to no avail. I can't find anything suspicious in the running processes. I can't seem to turn off the windows antimalware process to test that, though.

Any ideas?

I decided to run hijack this and found two BHO's. It's funny that on my new install that I used a handful of times, I have adware, but on this install that's been going for years, I have nothing. Oh well. So I had "Crossrider" and "Coupon Companion". I removed all traces of both, yet still no go. It looks like this managed to install itself on 12/2... which had to be damn close to the date that I bought the SSD, however, I had internet activity as recent as 12/26. System: Windows Vista

Hello,

In the past week I have been experiencing difficulty in updating windows. Sometime "Windows Installer Module stopped working" pops up and other times "windows hosts file stopped working." I have tried various fix-it solutions with no luck (i.e. Fixit, SFC /SCANNOW, start and restarting installer). I would appreciate help.

Thanks.

Answer:Windows update not working and windows Installer Module stopped working.

copy what's the Quote box below

msiexec.exe /unregister
msiexec.exe /regserver
regsvr32 /s msi.dll
net start "windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ics)"Click to expand...

now open Notepad and Paste the above into the text-field.
Save (file>save) this as All files, and name it repairmsi.bat
Note: the .bat part is very important. Make sure you aren't saving it as a .txt document.

Now run this .bat file and see if the problem persists.

I am unable to use the mic in my headphones with the laptop at the moment. With the headphones plugged in the 9360 just defaults to the inbuilt mic which is terrible.
Ever since a driver update, (I can't remember which), the maxxaudio popup that allows you to choose your mic input stopped appearing and the audio sounds very flat.
I need assistance in this situation as it's dells responsibility with regards to MaxxAudio, as it seems I have no other choice of audio driver.

Win 7 64 Windows Update not working (post migration), nor is Windows Update Readiness tool installing. I have renamed catroot and stopped services, nothing working. I just migrated HD to a hybrid solid state (Seagate Momentus). I had this problem both with Acronis 2009 and Acronis 2013, and Windows Backup would not create a recoverable partition (always said file not available about 30% through the recovery). I have installed the Intel IDE ATA drivers, and scoured the help topics. I have tried everything. I could really use some help.

The error I receive when attempting to install the Windows Update Readiness Tool is:

"Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247"

The Microsoft FixIt and Control Panel FixIt says it has fixed the problem, but Update does not work. Nothing is working, but the OS is healthy, the disk is healthy. The sfc/scannow doesn't reveal any corrupted components.

I followed all of these instructions before attempting to install the Windows Update Readiness Tool:

Windows Update Service and Windows Module Installer Service are the two basic services responsible for all your updates to install correctly.

If Windows Updates are failing, then my first step would be to check if these two services are running.
Windows Update Service enables the detection, download, and installation of updates for Windows and other programs. If this service is disabled, users of this computer will not be able to use Windows Update or its automatic upda... Read more

I have unintentionally put my laptop back to factory settings and am now back to windows 8.
The windows update isn't working and I can't seem to do anything. I keep searching for updates to download and install but it then says the standalone windows installer is not working either.
Does anyone know how to get around this as I am stuck on windows 8 and I cannot download any games or anything.

I am running Windows 7 on my Dell laptop and have noticed that I've had no updates for 6 months. When I ask try to download updates I'm told that the service is not running and that I should restart my computer. This never works, however. I have tried several "fixes" from the Microsoft site but have had no success.
Any ideas?

I have a question. I am working on a friend's computer, removing a trojan for them. The computer is back to normal, but after I open up Internet Explorer and proceed over to Windows Update, it comes to an error page, where it had a problem. I had to run the diagnostic and it came back clear except that it could not access FTP. I check the firewall and that was fine. Any help would be appreciated...

Answer:Windows Update not Working

Are you using an illegal copy of Windows OS? Most pirated versions come with disabled Windows update, or perhaps the trojan has disabled your Windows update. I recommend in this case to format and reinstall your OS, then install an updated antivirus software.

"WindowsUpdate_80244004" "WindowsUpdate_dt000" is the error that I am being given. I have searched the internet and tried all the fixes that I have found.

I have used the FixIt tool that windows supplies for the updater and still nothing.

I recently had to replace my motherboard, could this be the source of this issue.

This is driving me nuts.

It started when I tried to update Directx. It always displays the same error message:
"A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted. Please verify the Cryptographic Services are enabled and the cabinet file certificate is valid."Click to expand...

After following several walk-throughs on the Microsoft websites I discovered that none of my Windows updates had been working either.

I'm getting error: 80246008 when I try to run windows update which suggests a problem with something called Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), as I've read. So I open Services in the Control Panel and try to start it manually and I get yet another error code.
Error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to startClick to expand...

Also, I don't know if it's relevant or not but one of the Walk-throughs I followed had me type the following commands in the prompt and the following returned with error messages:
regsvr32 /u initpki.dll
regsvr32 /u gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 /u sccbase.dll
regsvr32 /u slbcsp.dllClick to expand...

Please help me out, I've been at it for hours and I am not having any luck at all.

Hello,

I am having a problem with my new Windows 8 ultrabook.
Windows update were not happening so i checked the windows update section of the control panel. It was set to 'Automatically install updates' but when i checked for updates i was getting an error.
I used the Windows update troubleshooter and it did some fixes and then when i checked the Windows update section it asked me to restart the system. I did the restart but nothing happened.
I checked the Windows update service and it was in stopped mode, when i tried to start the service it crashed. It keeps crashing whenever i try to start it.
I checked and BITS was in 'running' state.

4 days ago I unreserved my W10 reservation and hid the windows 10 update. Now when I run Windows Update it searches forever in a continuous loop.

I don't know if there were any critical updates available for Windows 8.1 on Tuesday but I didn't get any and Windows Update now just runs endlessly. Maybe the W10 download disabled something even though it was not installed.

Any suggestions?

Dear All,

I have a small problem with "Windows Update" and have been communicating with "sickntired" and "L1NGUS" over on the "Windows Vista" forum under the heading "Windows Update- is it working ?!"

We've established that "updates" are still being supplied/downloaded OK but the "View Update History" page is empty (apart from this month's update).

As you will see, "sickntired" and "L1NGUS" suggested that malware may be present. You will also see that I've run "Malwarebytes" a couple of times and found umpteen "PUP.Optional.Conduit" items which have been quarantined.
So, have you any provisional thoughts on my problem and can you help at all ? If so, what other information do you need ?

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

NB:I also have one or two other "minor irritation" on my computer----- "Snipping Tool" won't work, "sfc/ scannow" won't work fully, can't establish whether "CHKDSK" works or not, in "Windows Security" Centre", "Automatic Updating" is invariably "Off" and I have to turn it on manually, AND, I've just typed all of this into "Notepad" and tried to copy and paste it here and failed (!)--- so had to type it again!

Regards,

Graham

When I open Windows Update I get a message that says it "encountered an error and can't display the requested page" the error number is 0x80072F78. All I want to do is run the Update to fix a DLL problem. Any ideas on how to fix this would be most appreciated!!

I am running Windows 2000 Professional, with Service Pack 2 Build 2195. The DLL problem is preventing me from downloading some software I subscribe to and the software company says I need to update my system, my service packs were complete and up to date a year ago when I installed Windows 2000.

Thanks very much.

Hi,

I use IE mainly because all of my frequently used sites are on the favorites bar. It stopped working this weekend, just won't open anymore. So I thought that maybe Windows Update could fix it but when I went to download the updates, it cranked and cranked for over an hour and it was still at 0 and 0%. Tried googling "windows update won't work" and found a microsoft site that claimed to fix it but when it tried to download files, same thing, it never downloaded anything. Any thoughts on how I can fix this.

If you can't download it, try a different web browser or PC.
I suggest you carefully read and follow all the steps, and remember to run the program in Safe mode with Networking.

However my computer immediately shut down and was going to restart but, it just sits at a black screen with a single white like blinking at the top. However I cannot type anything in, and it wont move past this screen. It hasn't even gotten to the main opening screen with the company logo.

It is a Toshiba Laptop by the way.

Any dea what it is and how to fix it? Please and thank you.

Reboot or turn on the machine. As soon as you see your machine's name logo splash screen keep tapping F8. Go to "Advanced Options" or "Repair Computer" Select your language then "Repair Your Computer" An installation of Windows should be detected after that it will attempt to repair Windows.

Could it have been a Legacy Driver by any chance?

Hi all,

It appears i have run into an odd problem and no amount of googling has shown me any remedy.

I have windows 10 Pro installed not via an upgrade. At first i was able to use the update and security tap under settings but recently that is no longer working. If i go to the settings, update & security the top moving line runs but nothing is ever displayed or updated. I do not see any advanced options either on that page. I have attached a image of what i get.

Windows is activated and everything else functions properly.
Really unsure as to what the problem may be, so any assistance would be very welcome.

Hi Silas,

Most probably the problem is the Background Intelligence transfer service not working or in cases, any of the Windows update related services.
Please run the troubleshooters named Background Intelligence transfer service and Windows update from Control Panel>Troubleshooting>View all and reply back with what is fixed/not fixed.

She said that she noticed some fake antivirus warnings popping up and also a fake shield icon placed in the system tray.

If you leave it for 20+ hours, it should find the list of updates.

If you manually install KB3135445, then the search time should be reduced.

Hello,
I have tried to update a couple of times- I have the computer set to automatic updates, but it has been a while since I have seen an update so I went to check and clicked on windows update. I get the never ending circle going round and round. I was able to run automatic maintenance. Under Maintenance it says: Reconnect Your Drive- Your file history drive was disconnected for too long. To keep saving files reconnect your drive and then run a back up.
When I click run now - nothing seems to happen....
I had no idea that my drive was disconnected, frankly I don't even know what that means. Thank you, Dawn

Do you have an external drive for backup? If so, it's disconnected. If you've been backing up to a flash drive, plug one in. From "Computer" post which drives are shown.

What windows update troubleshooter are you referring too? Is it the one available on this article?

There is a possibility that this failed because your .NET Framework 4 installation isn't exactly in tip-top shape. You may wanna uninstall it and reinstall it, then try to grab the update for it. Also, if you haven't already, try downloading the security update manually then install it that way instead of using Windows Update to do the work.

Then I needed to reinstall the operating system and Windows Update did no more work. After clicking on "Windows Update" in the Start menu, it took a long time to "Check for new updates" (sliding the horizontal green line), then an

I tried to reinstall Windows 7, but the same error occured even after a fresh installation.
The desktop pc is not member of a Domain. How can I find the cause of this problem? And how can it be solved?

Hello. I upgraded from Windows 8 to 10. It worked fine. I upgraded some drivers as per HP's recommendations and that is where my problems started.  I was prompted to restart and did so. Upon start up, my computer showed the HP logo and then went to a black screen and would not go further. After I restarted, I was able to go into a sort of system recovery.  I did not do anything there or run any diagnositics. When I exit it though, it brings me to a Windows screen. It says my Windows did not shut down properly. I tried all the options available with the same result. I therefore decided to re-install Windows 10 as it was one of the choices. Once Windows 10 re-installed itself, my computer went into something resembling sleep mode. When I tried to "wake it up", the tower and fans started up but my screen recieved no signal. I did a hard reboot. Now when I start it, the light and fans are running, power is reaching the tower. However, my screens are dark and not receiving a signal. Also now my keyboard, which is the one that came with it, seems to have no power. Usually as soon as the computer is on, I can turn on and off the caps and white light would come on, this does not happen.  I was thinking of running everthing off a boot disk but the computer did not come with one at time of purchase, it comes with a digital version which is not very helpful at this time. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

HI:

I have Windows 7 32 bit. I'm having problems with Windows Update. I tried a few tools like the Microsoft Fix-
It and some other ones. I gave up and decided to re install windows. Sadly but true I still have the same Windows Update problem. I installed Windows 3 times. The last time I formatted the HDD and still have the problem. Also my Audio doesn't work, but I'm mainly concerned with the Windows Update issue. Any suggestions would be a huge help.

Thanks

I am at the same spot as you are. I have already reprogrammed my laptop about 5 times and still no luck. I have waited for more than 2 hours waiting on updates and nothing happens. I tried all fixes without any luck. Might be an issue at microsoft but not quite sure about it.

After going through the entire Malware removal process, my Windows Update has stopped working.

I have tried the following with no results:

Try shutting down Comodo and any other protection software and see if that helps.

If not, then try the below.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
Now open Repair_Windows.exe
Go to Start Repairs tab.
Choose "Custom Mode" and press "Start".
Create a System Restore point if prompted.
In the Custom Mode window, select the following repair options:
Repair Windows Firewall
Repair Internet Explorer
Repair Hosts File
Remove Policies Set By Infections
Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
Repair Windows Updates
Now click the Start button.
Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
If asked to reboot the computer for the changes to take affect, make sure other tasks in the program are not still running before accepting to restart.
Reboot after running Windows Repair.

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

My PC is not getting any updates to the Windows XP operating system.

I have tried doing a manual update via the MicrosoftUpdate Web site. Whether I choose Express OR custom update I get the error [Error number: 0x800A0046].

The web page suggests the following
In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab, click the Internet security zone icon, and then click Custom Level.
In the Settings dialog box, scroll to the Miscellaneous section.
Under Userdata persistence , select Enable.
Click OK and when the security warning dialog box appears, click Yes.
All of which I have done but still I get the error and NO updates.

I have tried regsrv32 qmgr.dll & regsrv32 qmgrprxy.dll
both of which succesfully registered but did not fix the problem.

I have also noticed that the Windows installer does not work either. Therefore I cannot install any new software using MSI.

I have tried re-registering the msiexec.exe with no effect. I have tried re installing MSI version 3.1 & 4.5 with no effect.

I set up MSI logging and the error MSI is returning error 1601.

in my mind this is all suggesting some sort of security / policy issue......

Any ideas?

Update @ 3/21/2017 1:01PM CST It finally started working. I'm not sure what worked though.

It all started with a USB device not recognized that I couldn't seem to solve, so I reset windows. Then it wouldn't boot correctly so I just gave up and did a clean install of Windows 10 Pro x64. Since then I can not get Windows Update to work correctly. It has installed three updates(KB2467173, KB4013418, and Security update for Flash), but now when checking for updates it finds some and looks like it's going to download them individually but they quickly disappear and it shows downloading updates and gets stuck at different percentages(see attached screenshot). I've let it sit like that for a few hours and nothing changes.

So far I've tried the following with no success:
sfc /scannow
chkdsk c: /r
ran windows update troubleshooter from the control panel
ran the downloaded windows update troubleshooter
turned off to download updates from my local network
Reset Windows again
- Ran the following commands at an elevated command prompt, hitting enter after each command
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc
Ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
Ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvc

I've been working at this for hours now and I'm about to lose my mind and would appreciate any help! Thank you.

Answer:Windows Update Not working

March 31. 2017
I have two hp laptops running Windows 10 Home. Both PC.s are good with no virus or spyware. Today both computers cannot run Windows Update without the following message.

"There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:

• Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.239.530.0) - Error 0x80070643"

Since both computers have the same problem on the same day, i would think it's a Microsoft issue.

Anyone have any advice.

WindowsUpdate_error 80072F8F

This is my girlfriends laptop which has Vista 32 bit on Asus.
Model# F8SN
Source Specs: ASUS F8SN

This error as I set it, is because the computer's clock is not the same as the Windows Update's server clocks. I have already done these things

-sfc/ scannow
-made sure bios clock is correct
-made clock is correct
-netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
-netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
-ipconfig /release

I'm not a expert on Windows update so and she is stressing out, so thats annoying me. lol

Answer:Windows update not working.

Hello, Mcninjaguy!

I was reading about your error, and it has to do with the time, as you said in your post, so here's a few links to hopefully resolve your issue, since I've never really dabbled into the error before this point, so unfortunately my experience would be no help in this thread . . .

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...412341033.mspx

If you're still having trouble, you could always manually install them for the time being until you find the solution.

Also, what updates have you installed recently, as in - what are the latest installed? You can go to your Control Panel | System and Security | Windows Updates | and to your left, you'll see View Update History, select that, and please take either a screengrab or tell me what the latest ones are.

You could also use this link, it's faster; http://v9.update.microsoft.com/windo....aspx?ln=en-us

Do you have any proxies setup? What's your firewall? What's your anti-virus/anti-malware?

Can you still browse the Internet OK? Do you see any effects in your Internet at all?

Check out this program; http://www.emergingtechs.com/posts/h...ndows-updates/

Hi,

So this issue started out when I tried to install 11 or so important listed updates on my HP Pavilion computer running Windows 8.1. I canceled the installation because I realized I was about to install an update I didn't want, tried again with the updates I wanted, and the update installer won't work no matter what I do. I ran the troubleshooter several times with no remedy. Windows update has given me error code: 8024A000. I looked up solutions and found this: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-and-Recovery/windows-update-error-8024A000/m-p/2918473/highlight/true#M72254

I tried that twice now and restarted my computer, it still doesn't work.
Currently it looks like this:

Please help me so I can install updates normally ;;

Hi,
I have an issue with windows update and from what I can tell the problems seem to be related to the windows update components on my lap top. At the moment I cannot install any windows updates. I tried numerous things to get the updates working but I do not think the updates themselves are the issue.
I ran the Troubleshooting utility from the Control Panel and get the following message.
"Repair Windows Update component" (saying not fixed).
I also ran Fix it and got more or less the same error message as above.
I am running Windows 7 home edition, the 64 bit version.

Hey there!
Specs: Windows Vista 64-bit. SP2 installed.
Problem:
For several months, whenever I open up Windows Update, a VERY long time passes until anything shows up the window. When the "check for updates" finally shows up, clicking on the button yields the following dialog message box:

"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."

Naturally, restarting has no effect on this. I'd gone through other online resources and had run the Windows utilities that attempted to reboot the Windows Update components. Nothing has worked. I am afraid that this could snowball into larger issues if nothing I have is updated.

I am running a Dell 2350 with Windows XP. I recently had a lot of malware problems on this computer which Chaslang helped me work thru. I then started down thru the "How to protect yourself from Malware" thread. First thing visit windows update. I did and had a few noncritical downloads that needed to be done so I downloaded them and then hit the install button. Everything seemed to be working fine until the end , when it popped up with the message ... "such and such program" failed to install.. try running windows update again or working thru the "troubleshooter" fix. Well I tried both, rerunning windows update came up with the same error failed to install. Next tried the troubleshooter. Got down to the step to verify the following registry entries are present
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\SensLogn
needless to say I dont have that registry entry in my registry.. I do have
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\Wgalogon

Anyone help??
Thanks!

I am having trouble with the Windows Update.

I have been on holiday and missed the May 2013 update on starting my PC today I tried going to the Windows Update since strangely, although I had been using my PC for a while the update hadn't started uploading as usual.

I had great difficulty actually opening the Windows update window and when it finally did it said the 'windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running window 7'. I have tried several solutions as detailed in: windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running window 7 HELP

But to no avail. The window doesn't open when I click in Control Panel and I cannot close control panel have, to shutdown Explorer.exe process then restart it.

Tried the Windows fixit program []Microsoft Fix it Solution Center: troubleshooting software issues downloaded as instructed and let it run said all problems fixed try it. Tried and windowsUpdate window now opens satisfactorily but says: Service is not running restart. I have done so and still same message appears. Checked SERVICES.MSC and BITS and update set to Automatic (Delayed Start).

Have also downloaded the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2013] but when I tried to run message: installer encountered an error 0xc8000247.
Attached the CBS zip file as instructed

Please advise.
Thanks
Ron

Answer:Windows Update not working

The first thing that comes to my mind is check the time and date in bios and Windows.
Sometimes when a system set a long time with a weak bios battery the time will be wrong.
I would also try a manual Windows Update.

You could also check and see if Microsoft still love you.

When i click on check for updates it would flash to this one error that was red and then it would go away in 3 seconds. after hitting it a couple of times i finally got what it said:Windows could not search for new updates. Windows update encountered an unknown error. C8000710
Then after that i would click ok and then another error would pop up and it said:The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2755

So if anyone can help with this i would really appreciate the time and effort.

Using Win XP Pro SP3 on Dell Precision T3400

For several months I've had to find and download Windows update patches manually because Windows Update is not working.

The update procedure goes through the download process, but fails during the installation. I found, downloaded, and ran Microsoft Fixit. It reported a problem with Windows Update (no details) that required repair, so I gave it permission to repair. It completed successfully but the update still doesn't work.

Any ideas of where to look for a solution to this?

EdP

Answer:Windows Update Not Working

Do you receive any error message when update fails?

Is this with any specific update or with all the updates?

Answer:windows update not working need help

Hello darkparagon, checking for Vista updates often takes as much as 40 minutes these days. As best we can figure, this is because Microsoft's servers are busy with Windows 10 upgrades, and not something that users can fix. If you have just reinstalled Vista, then you have a long road ahead. (Patch Tuesday will probably be next week, so there is not much to check for right now if your Vista installation is current.) The link you posted suggests that you want to upgrade to Windows 7. I'm pretty sure you would have to purchase a disc in order to do that. [Edit] On second thought, it looks like you downloaded something that requires Windows 7 SP1, so why are you posting at Vista Forums?

My computer has windows vista operating system 32 bit windows update did stop working and there is no error message or codes. The last patch Tuesday updates was installed on July 13m 2016 and between that time and August 8, 2016 my computer repeatedly downloaded and installed multiple updates of the the malicious software removal tool KB 890830 and therefore on August 9, 2016 Patch Tuesday my computer never checked for updates automatically again. My computer can manually check for updates but however will not find any. It appears as if these updates have been blocked.

Answer:windows 8 update not working

clackyjock33
is this related to your post about Win8 not working on an old HP desktop or is this a different pc.
does the Win8 update give a message about not being able to connect to the internet or do you get an other error message.
You say its already connected to the internet, are you asking the question on the pc that you are trying to update, have you looked in device manager to see if there is a yellow exclamation mark next to your network card.

PS you never responded to your original post about the wrong version of Win8 being installed when people offered advice etc.

I am using windows xp evaluation copy build 2505 and my windows update does not fuction. When I click on widows update I get to the "Welcome to Windows Update" window. I then click on Scan for updates and the window goes to "Windows Update is looking for available updates... 0% complete" and the window does not change, it stays on this page and does not display any updates. I think it may have to do something with the eval version of the software, but it did work at one point in time.

When I go to Control Panel and click on windows update the computer hangs or takes a long tiime to load the screen. I can switch Windows update on and set it to do automatic updates but it switches off for reasons I do not know.

I would appreciate advice on this.

Answer:Windows Update Not Working

Hi, your problem is most likely caused by Kaspersky, I would check to see if you have windows defender running. If so, disable it, defender is in conflict with Kaspersky.

Services.msc type into search locate windows defender right click select properties set start to disable, Restart computer.

Hello.
At first(some weeks ago), windows update couldn't search automatically for updates and when I was trying to update manually I was getting error 80080005.
I didn't manage to fix the problem, and now when manually checking for updates, it never finishes(its stuck at 'checking for updates').

Tried running System Update Readiness Tool as well. Tried to apply a hotfix and failed. Since then when I run the tool again it gets stuck at 'searching for updates on this computer' (kinda like windows update).

Additional info
After a quick look at update history: It started 2 months ago*. Since then windows update has been installing the same 3 updates each time. Though their status is marked as 'successful', they have been installed over 40 times till now('successfully' each time).

*Seems the starting point for all this is a failed update:
Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB973688)
Installation date: ‎21/‎6/‎2012 12:28 μμ
Error details: Code 643

The 3 updates that keep getting installed/in case you need them
Security Update for Windows 7 (KB2633171)
Security Update for Windows 7 (KB2676562)
Update for Windows 7 (KB2679255)

Answer:Windows update is not working

Are you running any type of anti-virus or firewall that might be bocking access for Windows Update?

I show 2 entries in Programs and Features panel about MSXML. KB954430 and KB973688 were both installed on 7/12/2011. Do you show those, and if so, can you try a repair, change or uninstall operation?

The 80080005 means CO_E_Server_Exec_Failure, if that is any help.

Could you copy your WindowsUpdate.log in the Windows folder, to your desktop and then copy around the last 5 days of entries. Paste those in a text file and zip it and attach? Maybe someone will see something that might help.

As mentionned in the title, I was having lots of ad popups and the windows update service was corrupted (unable to start).

Here is my Combofix log. Even if everything seems ok now, I'd like to get a confirmation from a Helper that all the probs were fixed.

Answer:Windows update isn't working

This problem seems quite common after installing SP3. I found these sugestions:Solution #1:One solution might be:Delete c:\program files\windowsupdate Do the same to c:\winnt\system32\windowsupdate (a hidden directory) Try windows update again. Solution #2:The official way to clear out Windows Update is:Some of these files are hidden files, please enable "Show Hidden Files and Folders" from your Folder options. To delete Windows Update files:Double click on My Computer, double click on C:\ Open the "WUTEMP" folder and delete the contents of the folder (If any files exist). Double click the Program Files folder, then the 'Windows Update' folder. We will then need to delete all files & folders within this directory except the "V4" folder. To do so, highlight the "V4" folder, then click Edit from the menu bar at top of the window and choose Invert Selection. If you cannot locate the "V4" folder, please skip this step, and then continue to delete the rest of the files by choosing Select All instead of Invert Selection. Once all of the other files are highlighted, simply hit the Delete key on your keyboard to delete these files. Next we need to delete all the files & folders within the V4 directory except the "iuhist.xml" file. To do so, perform the same steps as above by highlighting the "iuhist.xml" file, then clicking Edit from the menu bar at top of the window and choose Invert Selection. Answer:windows update not working

Thans for the reply, I understand what you are saying, it is just that until I mucked the computer up a couple of days ago (by stupidly following a youtube tip to speed up the computer which totally stopped it booting up) windows update was working fine and it had been since a windows 10 install and a windows 10 removal the next day a few months ago. The folder windows/softwaredistribution/download does exist with only 2 files with very long gobbledygook names and one is only 15kb and the other file is 39kb, Which seems to me to be nowhere near big enough for any update. I wondered if instead of the clean install from the recovery partition would it be any different doing a clean install from the recovery disks I made when I got the laptop? cheersMade no difference with disk update and those 2 small updates are just adobe updates and after 3 hors straight the bar is still meandering along, my update history shows only updates from 2012 when win7 was first installed...**bleep** Microsoft!!!P.S.Yesterday I decided I had enough and started to install windows 10, from an earlier download, but after it started I thought "No you know you hated it" so I cancelled the install. Lo and behold about 3 hours later when I went to shutdown the laptop it said close down and install updates, so, after 4 hours of installing 251 updates and restarting it then installed another 41 updates, then some more on the next shutdown, so basically, I think the bit of installing that the windows 10 did, ... Dear All,

I open "Windows Update".

First page says "No important updates" available", and continues to do so every time I search.

I click "View update history" and on next page I'm told that "You have not tried to install any updates for your computer" !! (This is nonsense !)

I click "Installed Updates" and next page says 8 updates were installed "Earlier this week"----- 8.1.14; and 257 updates were installed "A long time ago"---- last date being 10.12.13.

Are updates provided on a roughly monthly basis ?

The latest 8 updates dated 8.1.14 appeared, as if by "magic", a couple of days ago. I did not see the update happening --- do not think that this has happened before.

So, is my "Windows Update" working properly ?

Further, why does the "View Update History" page say what it says ?!

I've spent hours on this anomoly and got precisely nowhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yours,

Graham Newey.

PS: My OS is Vista Home Premium + Service Pack 2.

Answer:"Windows Update"-- is it working ?!

Have you ran the "Troubleshooting Utility"? http://support.microsoft.com/gp/windows-update-issues/en-usHave you checked to see if all Drivers are up to date?Microsoft usually releases updates on "Patch Tuesday" as most users call it.
