Where is Console Lock Time Out setting in Windows 10 Pro?

Question: Where is Console Lock Time Out setting in Windows 10 Pro?

I am running Windows 10 on my two home computers (laptop and desktop), and it drives me crazy that the console locks after 5 minutes and we have to enter a PIN to wake it back up. My wife has pretty much stopped using the laptop because she can't stand it. I had figured out how to disable it in Windows 8.1, but it appears they removed the option to add that to the settings in Windows 10. I have been searching the interwebs for days to try and find a solution posted somewhere and I am really surprised by the lack of complaints about this. I can't believe we're the only ones who find it maddeningly annoying. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions about what to do?
Thanks,
Nate

Preferred Solution: Where is Console Lock Time Out setting in Windows 10 Pro?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When my computer starts/reboots, the Num Lock is set to off whilst I like it to be set to on. Does the solution lie in the BIOS or in Windows 10?

Answer:Is BIOS or Windows 10 responsible for setting Num Lock at startup?

Windows takes over this setting. In newer Insider builds this setting is set to ON at start. You'll have to wait that MS include such behavior in regular updates. Or switch to Insider builds (but at this moment stay with slow ring).

Hi,

I looking for a way to limit time on the PC - auto lock Windows after 30 minutes, even (and especially) when the computer is not idle.
When the user will log back into Windows by entering the Windows password, the counter will start again from 30 minutes.

The app should start automatically and silent with Windows, and the user should not be able to stop this app without a password.

Thanks, Nir.

I have added the Console Lock Display off time out to the advanced power options. However; the display does not turn off after locking the desktop. The only solution i could find in Windows 8 was to reset the user security policies , but i cannot find that option in Windows 10. Any help is much appreciated.

So I used this walkthrough to set a setting for the lock display timeout,
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/8268-lock-screen-timeout-period-change-windows-8-a.html
This used to work fine, but now it doesn't work at all.
I recently installed a few toshiba updates, like the value added package, the system driver, service station, and hardware setup. I'm thinking a toshiba setting is overriding this somehow...anyone else have any ideas?

Hello Forum,

To begin with i would like to congratulate the admin team for maintaining such an awesome forum. I never felt the need to register because most of my seraches landed to this site for solution except for this one, so here i am with my problem.

I have 2 week old HP pavalion notebook pc with pre-installed Windows 8.1 64bit single language. Untill few days back, when i presses windows+L the lock screen would pop up immediately. But now whenever i do it, it takes time to lock.

I clocked it and it took approx 30-35 sec to lock. I am not sure what might be the problem or if this is  al all normal behaviour. Have to look at 'Please wait' screen for 30 sec to get lock screen image.

Kindly help,
Thanks.

I frequently am logging in and out of my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have a good, secure password that I use and because I'm human, sometimes I mistype it. The issue is that on these occasions, I am locked out for a good 30 seconds from attempting to
login, even for the second time.

I can understand the time delay if it were say, my 5th or 6th attempt, but for one attempt this is entirely too long. How do I go about significantly reducing this, or ideally removing it?

Thank you very much!

So, I have searched the internet for what I am trying to find but the only thing that comes up is how to add a timer that will turn the display off after a certain time WHILE the lock-screen is on. That's not what I am asking.

What I am asking is if there is a way to auto-lock the computer after a certain amount of time. I know you can activate a screensaver after a certain amount of time, and then once touched again it will show up at the lockscreen. That's not what I want. I have the lock-screen setup to play a slideshow of pictures that I want to play when not in use. (This is a 58" touchscreen display that is used to interact with a powerpoint presentation in a public area). If I leave the desktop screensaver option on, it'll turn off the lockscreen slides. Why does that matter if the slideshow is running you may be asking? Well, I have a script on the desktop of this computer that will lock the computer with a single click. This is because when someone is done doing a presentation, I want them to be able to lock the screen immediately so that when they walk away someone can't just walk by and start messing with a wide-open computer.

So, idk if this is possible or if someone has a better solution but i'd appreciate any input.

The whole thing started to appear around 3 days ago. The problem is that everytime I boot, windows 10 stays on a weird lock screen without any buttons for a long long time. There are just 4 icons in the bottom right corner (shut down, accesibility, ethernet...) It sometimes manages to get to desktop, and sometimes not. Not sure what caused it, could be a recent windows update, not sure tho. I ran some HDD scans and everything turned out fine, also did a registry cleanup, tried disabling lock screen, and nothing seems to work. Any suggestions or solutions?

Answer:Windows 10 stuck at lock screen for a long time

Welcome to the TenForums @Taukonza

Could you please review your update history and see if any updates for Windows or Drivers were installed in last week?

You mentioned when you boot. Not sure if this is happening on restart or power on or both. If it is power on booting can I suggest a quick test. Open a command prompt (admin) and type

powercfg -h off

This will disable hibernation and in turn Fast Startup. Test. If no change you can re-enable by typing

powercfg -h on

After you boot have you reviewed your Event Viewer to see if Windows is kicking out any serious errors to the system log?

Hi,

apologies if this has been covered before somewhere else.
I am trying to remove the time and date from the lock screen. having searched I have seen several customisation options but the only one that actually covered this specifically was to make a change in regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SystemProtectedUserData\S-1-5-21-x-x-x-x\AnyoneRead\LocaleInfo

this brought about issues relating to administrator accounts which seem to be a common problem with windows 8.1.
nearly all of the solutions were not available to me but I finally found I could make the change in regedit by changing ownership of the file and changing the format of the time to a space. unfortunately the date is still showing.
how can I remove the date?

further, just to clarify, does the original account I signed in with have full administrator privileges? are they disabled and need to be enabled?
ive seen the tutorial on the built in elevated administrator account, this didn't work on its own either. do some files require a change of ownership to be altered regardless of which account you are signed in with including the administrator account?

any help appreciated

thanks

Brad

As the title says, I couldn't find it anywhere, but I was looking to have it so that after a set period of time Windows will automatically lock out the user (me). I'm not talking about having a screensaver come up, but I've seen it before, where it basically looks like the logon screen of XP, where you have to click on your name to go back into Windows, and type in your password again.

Can someone direct me to where I set this option? I thought it'd be in the standard haunts, but I don't see it anywhere.

Thanks!

Answer:Having windows lock-out after time (requiring password) but not screensaver

I've not seen this done outside the screensaver options, but this link has another option.

Reading more, I think what you really want is the screensaver option, but use the logon.scr with password enabled.

So I just installed Windows 8 on my system, and it was all going smoothly, until I got to installing Steam. After I clicked through a few menus, Steam finally started to install, but the progress bar never went up. If I tried to do anything else (Open task manager, stop the installation, etc...) everything would just lock up and I couldn't do anything.

At this point my only option was to restart, so I did just that. After about an hour of waiting for Windows to boot back up, I gave up and tried to do a system repair. This failed too, so I just re-installed Windows 8. I tried this 4 times. The first few times I thought it was because I might have had incorrect chipset drivers installed, but even when I did get the correct ones, it had the same issue.

At this point my only thought is that maybe I should do all available windows updates before I start installing steam? Otherwise, I'm out of ideas for getting this to work. It's also looking like this may be some sort of hardware failure, possibly ram?

So has anyone else experienced this, or do you have advice?

Strange, it should be there by default. There is a "Windows Time" service in Control Panel -Administrative Tools-Services that should be started and enabled. I'm not sure what that would affect but wouldn't hurt to check.

How can I set the cursor position in a Win32 Console application? Here is what I am trying to do:
Code:
COORD pos = {x, y};
HANDLE hConsole_c = CreateConsoleScreenBuffer( GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE, 0, NULL, CONSOLE_TEXTMODE_BUFFER, NULL );
char * str = "Some Text\r\n";
DWDORD len = strlen(str);

SetConsoleCursorPosition(hConsole_c, pos);
WriteConsole(hConsole_c, str, len, &dwBytesWritten, NULL);
CloseHandle(hConsole_c)
The text string `str` is never sent to the screen. Is there something else that I should be doing? Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Setting Cursor Position in Win32 Console App

This is crude but will work - note the comment about a keypress or breakpoint - if the program runs as far as the handle close - you will see nothing.
Code:
#include <windows.h>

int main()
{
BOOL bSuccess;
DWORD dwBytesWritten;
COORD posn;
char * str = "Some Text\r\n";

DWORD len = strlen(str);
HANDLE hConsole_c = CreateConsoleScreenBuffer(GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE,
FILE_SHARE_READ | FILE_SHARE_WRITE,
NULL,
CONSOLE_TEXTMODE_BUFFER,
NULL);
bSuccess = SetConsoleActiveScreenBuffer(hConsole_c);
posn.X = 0; posn.Y = 0;
bSuccess = SetConsoleCursorPosition(hConsole_c, posn);
bSuccess = WriteConsole(hConsole_c, str, len, &dwBytesWritten, NULL);
posn.X = 10; posn.Y = 10;
bSuccess = SetConsoleCursorPosition(hConsole_c, posn);
bSuccess = WriteConsole(hConsole_c, str, len, &dwBytesWritten, NULL);

// if you want to see anything put a keypress or breakpoint here
CloseHandle(hConsole_c);
return 0;

I don't know why but our computer store had recommended using Windows 2000 Administrator setting all the time to make things easier for us. I just read the small start up guide and it highly recommends not doing this as you are putting your computer at a major security risk. I do use some file sharing programs like WinMX and I understand if I don't use the Administrator setting, I can't use the program. I guess I would prefer security over being able to use the WinMX program but I guess I can't have both.

Can anyone tell me if I should be quickly setting up the Power user settings and stop using Administrator and why there is so much risk, the manual doesn't get specific.

I suspect that is why we are getting hacked into so often!

Answer:What is the problem in using Windows 2000 Administrator setting all the time?

The issue is that if you are hacked, the priviledge level of the current user is usually all the hacker gets. Therefore, it is recommended that you use a basic user account as often as possible. If you need to launch a program with admin rights, then use the SU feature (switch user) to launch that program with the admin account. It is also recommended that you rename the admin account and then create a new administrator account that has no rights. That way if a hacker finds the user accounts and passwords, they will naturally try the administrator account first. Hope this helps straighten out the issue.

In Windows 8.1, I need comma as a decimal symbol. However, after restart it changes to dot and I need to reset it and restart all the programs. It is annoying. In Region settings, input method, Welcome, User setting etc. are the same language/region (Slovak).
Is there registry key that would prevent OS changing the settings after restart? The default settings are correct, so I do not understand where does the change come from. After OS installation I used different system language (English) for a time, because
it is easier for me to do setup in English, so maybe that is the reason. Thank you.

THEN set it to slideshow (I used Camera Roll) and it will start the slideshow with the photo first put in!

I know I will be reprimanded for running combofix without first setting up a topic here on bleepingcomputer.com and getting an expert advisor to walk me through the steps.  It was a mistake to run the program on my own.

In any case, after installing combofix and the MS Recovery Console, running combofix one time, and apparently removing combofix, I find I am unable to remove the Recovery Console.  I have tried to follow Microsoft's directions regarding deleting the cmdcons folder, but items within the folder are un-deletable and, by extension, the folder itself is un-deletable.

If you all can look past my imprudent and improper, unguided use of combofix, and are willing to assist me in trying to remove the Recovery Console, I'd appreciate it.

One other point:  Following the "Please select the operating system to start:" text when I restart the computer, I am presented with 3 choices, as follows:

"Microsoft Windows XP Professonal"

Based on limited past experience, I would have expected only the 1st and 3rd listed choices.  I have no idea what the "do not select this [debugger enabled]" choice is about.  (An option during boot up that says don't select this is kind of unsettling/worrisome.)  If you can shed any light on this, I would, again, be grateful.

Hey,

Currently, I don't have a password set for my user account (I don't want to have to enter it on each start-up and I don't really have a problem with people using my computer).

Occasionally I'll be working on something and when I leave my computer I don't want to risk anyone accidently messing it up. It would be pretty handy if I could lock my user account with a password, then just unlock it and pick up from where I left off. From my understanding, the only way I can do this is if I create a password for my entire account.

Is there any way I can set a password for just the lock screen?

Answer:Setting password for just my lock screen?

Hello Clinton, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The only way would be to set a password for your user account.

A workaround would be to create a password for your account, and set Windows to log on to your user account automatically at startup. This way you will not have to enter your password at startup, but you will if you lock the computer.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Our company have company wide issue where users are reporting that the Welcome screen after logging on takes anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes, which is unusually long. I've come across a "fix" from TechNet from another member that this has happen
to them before and the fix was to:
1. gpedit.msc >> Local Computer Policy >> Computer Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> System >> User Profiles
2. Set maximum wait time for the network if a user has a roaming profile >> Change setting from "Not Configured" to "Enabled" and change the "Wait for network for maximum (seconds)" to 0.
By doing this action, will it affect the global group policy set by our Server Admins? As in, when a user logs in, it usually do a gpupdate /force, will changing this setting in gpedit.msc, will it skip the gpupdate /force from happening?

I recently had a good read thru the tutorial about Host Files. Am I the only one that didn't have "Lock Host File" checked in ZoneAlarm (free) until I read this? Sounds to me like it's fairly important to prevent changes to be made in any way we can. FYI,open ZA,go to the Firewall page/Main/Advanced Button/Advanced Settings/check Lock Host File.

I see this question has been asked on three prior occasions in these forums, but I will ask again, hoping to get a concrete answer or solution from HP For the 800 G2 Mini is there a way of enabling the NumLock at boot in the BIOS? Also, we use a lot of scripting at my org, and have been able to using Powershell WMIObject calls configure BIOS settings, but the current 800 G2 Mini seems to drop a lot of support for these calls. Maybe something to do with using UEFI?  What WMIObject calls for the win32_BIOS object should be available? Thank you

I have been looking at the Lock Screen Background tutorial. I should be able to set the image from my Photo App however my Photo App doesn't look anything like the screen in the tutorial with no option to set as Lock Screen from the drop down menu or even a Draw facility icon on the menu bar. Am I doing something wrong here, any help please?

It's simply that you haven't selected an individual image yet. You are on the Collections/Albums/Folders screen. Choose an image and the 'Set as' options will be available.

I just purchased a brand new W500... I feel like an idiot to ask this question, but I have looked at all Control Panel functions, including power settings, and can't figure it out. Whether operating on battery or 120VAC, my computer locks out to the initial log in screen after about 20 seconds of non-use. If I stop typing for just 20 seconds, I have to log in again. Very aggravating. How do I change this setting to longer interval?

Answer:Not parental control, lock out setting and access to certain programs?

Hi and welcome to SevenForums!

Usually you do it with Group Policy, depending on what Windows version it is. In Pro and higher take a look at Software Restriction Policy and AppLocker. More info: Best protection against malware?

A good setup shouldn't restrict apps to only the desktop, but instead look at where the programs are located by the shortcuts on the desktop.

I am ready to overclock but I am scared that I cannot find this setting, because I know having this setting at 33mhz is important for SATA controller and I use 3 SATA drives and don't want to hurt them!

My motherboard is Asus Rampage Formula.

I see the "PCIE frequency" (pci express) , which I have locked at 100mhz, but I see no option for PCI frequency.

Then I thought, well maybe this motherboard doesn't have that option because there are no PCI slots.. only PCIE, but no there are indeed 2 PCI slots (although I have nothing in them).

Do you think the option is locked at 33mhz so they just didn't put it in the BIOS?
Thanks

Hi, I have a Creative X-Fi Gamer, I'm using it to try & record myself playing guitar using GuitarFX. If I just use the Creative Console Launcher's "Microphone" setting combined with GuitarFX everything is fine (the effects in GuitarFX sound how they should) but if I select "What U Hear" In the Creative Console Launcher I get far to much sound coming through my speakers most of the time (some preset effects settings in GuitarFX are usable but most are wrecked), the sound bars in guitarFX go off the scale, it's like mega feedback. Just a constant screech or drone & doing anything on the guitar makes no difference. I've even tried it without my guitar plugged into the PC & the same thing happens.
I'm using the Creative Console Launcher's record function to record some guitar, all I'm interested in is some way for me to record the effects GuitarFX creates for my guitar as I hear them through my speakers when I have the Creative Console Launcher's setting in the "Microphone" position? ie GuitarFX sounding as it should. I'd rather find some way to record the guitar onto my PC rather than go through the hassle of plugging something into speakers jack to record it there.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

have 40 to 50 systems running 2K prof. I'd like to lock them out from being able to surf the net. I figure it can be done several different ways. I'm new with this company, and am just now learning their enviroment.

There are 3 different locations. Each site, has it's own 2K small biz server running.

They have no group policies in effect as well.

Where would you begin, or what would be the easiest solution, all the while providing some scaleability?

Hello, I like seeing AM/PM on any time value. I already know if it's AM or PM, but it looks more Proper to see the AM or the PM with whatever time it is.

What Registry modification/Program can help me achieve this?

Thanks

Answer:AM/PM For The Time At The Lock Screen

You can change the time format, how time is shown on Windows notification area freely but AM / PM is regardless of your settings never shown in Windows Clock and lock screen if 24 hour clock has been selected.

To change how time is shown on Windows desktop, select Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Region, click Additional settings:

Now change time formats manually typing any of the following values for short time. Add :ss for long time for seconds:

h:mm
12 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

h:mm tt
12 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

hh:mm
12 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

hh:mm tt
12 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

H:mm
24 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

H:mm tt
24 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

HH:mm
24 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

HH:mm tt
24 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

Here I have selected 24 hour clock with AM / PM, but it's only shown in notification area. Opening clock does not show AM / PM, nor does lock screen, whatever settings I have chosen as long as I am using 24 hour clock:

Using 12 hour clock AM / PM is always shown in Clock and lock screen if selected.

Is there any way to keep the lock screen from shutting me down if I don't do anything on the keyboard for a minute or 2 minutes, or whatever it is? I followed some instructions that I found on the internet that involve adding ".bak" or ".backup" to the lock screen file in "SystemApps" but it didn't have any effect. Then I clicked on "Settings" in the Start menu and got totally lost in all that stuff.

Hello, I used to use a reg file for Windows 8.1 to customize the time until the screen turns off during the Lock Screen Time Out. I want to know if that command still applies for Windows 10.

The reg file command is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen]
"SlideshowDuration"=dword:000493e0
(where the screen turns off after 5 minutes).

I have the formula to figure out what you need to calculate to insert after "dword" for the amount of time until the screen times out (goes black). Ask me for the formula... as long as the above works.

Thanks

Answer:Lock Screen Slideshow Time Out

Never mind. I went into the Registry and checked it out.

Yes, the same exact rules apply here like in Windows 8.1

Hi there,

Since I got my current PC I've had an issue where it would occassionally completely lock-up, i.e. completely still image on screen, mouse wouldn't move, and it also put out a buzzing sound through the speakers/headphones. The only option was to force shutdown and start it up again. But it didn't happen that often so I wasn't bothered by it much.

However since updating to Windows 8 it is now happening about 15 minutes into use every time I turn the PC on (but after rebooting doesn't happen again until the next time I turn it on), so I'm looking for a solution now.

Has anyone seen something like this, or got any advise?

Thanks.

WOW!! Exactly what I'm seeing!!!

Usually occurs within 15 minutes of booting. Once a day only. I've had the computer off over 8 hours one day and when turned on it didn't happen... only the FIRST boot of the day. Works fine on any reboots after?

I have gotten random different BSOD's too.

I've also had days at a time when this didn't happen? I did nothing at all to change anything either. Then it starts happening again?

Things I have tried though:

Removed ANY unnecessary programs I had. This computer started with Vista, upgraded to W7, then W8 (when it started happening) and now W8.1, so I did collect a lot of 'junk'.
Stopped AutoStarting anything I didn't really need or could manually start later.

Hi folks. New here.  Sorry if this has  been asked/answered, but I searched and didn't find it. My company got me this great new W500 laptop.  Came with minidock and external monitor. I have the monitor plugged into the minidock, and have it to the right of the laptop. Laptop is monitor #2, and external LCD display is #2.  works great.  UNTIL.... If I lock the console, and fold the laptop monitor closed (to have it power off - i.e. at lunch break, etc...) When I come back, the external monitor is now monitor #1 (has the windows task bar, Start menu, etc...) and it thinks the laptop monitor is monitor #2.  I can't figure out how to switch them back without rebooting.  It's very frustrating, b/c the 'sides' are swapped too.  Meaning the external LCD display which is physically to the right, is "on the left" as far as Windows is concerned, so if I drag the mouse off-screen to the right of the external display, it arrives on the left side of the laptop (which is physically to the left). Is there a simple solution to this?  I can't live with having to reboot every time I lock my monitor. I'm using Windows XP if that makes a difference.

Answer:Dual Monitor issue. Lock console & external monitor becomes monitor #1

more information... It's the 'advanced minidock' with keys. The monitor is connected via the DVI port, not the plain old VGA port.

Hi, new to these forums, hope I don't break any rules or anything here.

I have dropped it once or twice from at most a 3ft fall inside a padded case. I mostly use my computer for school work, some gaming, extensive video/photo editing, internet browsing. I've installed some debatable programs but have been installed long ago. Most of my programs included Microsoft Office, Adobe suite, Steam, iTunes, uTorrent, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, Winrar, VLC, etc. But are now gone due to the refresh I had just done last week for prior problems, but still experience problems.

I recently been having issues with my computer where it just won't respond at all. Like today, I had it working for a few hours, but then went out and left my laptop on the lock screen, and came back to it being completely stuck. Completely stuck as in, no keys or clicks would unlock the screen to the login prompt. The time when it was stuck was 8:03pm, but the clock was stuck on 7:55. But on the bottom of the front of the laptop, the HDD orange light is not lit up at all, which I believe suggest that the HDD is not reading/properly reading. Oddly e... Read more

Not a techie.  Can't get straight answer ANYWHERE.  New laptops tend to NOT have indicators on the keys.  Hoping Windows 10 has indicators that can be turned on and PROBABLY would show up in the tray at the bottom right of the screen.
I have heard of sites where such things can be downloaded but again NOT a techie, so I hesitate to go outside of Windows/Microsoft for downloads.  I do not know what download sites are safe or spoofs.

Please plain English ... i.e. go to settings etc.  Or just give me a Microsoft approved site for download.

Not very descriptive, but so the computer goes.

Lets say I am updating a blog. And I refresh a number of times, once for each post.

Not always the same amount of refreshes, but eventually I get the spinner upper right, and the status bar says either 'Done' or 'Stopped'.

If I check email, first time fine. I close email. Over the next 2-5 hours, I open email again, close again, open again, Mozilla Thunderbird newest version, and it says cannot connect. The number of times it will work and then stop, varies.

To fix either, I reboot, no need to do anything else, and they work fine again.

I get the impression that if I have to connect to anything outside my home computer, this occurs. I haven't tried all software, but it happens with email, both browsers, and connecting to Everquest.

So it isn't just one type of site/server. Just anything outside my home computer. I'm the only user and admin.

Any ideas ?

Thanks.

I like having my monitor power off soon after activity stops. Currently, I have it powering off after 2 minutes of inactivity. I am also very big on locking my PC when I step away. So, I also have the screen saver kick in after 2 minutes. (Of course, I never even see a screen saver because the monitor is off. And, in fact, my screen saver is set to "None". So this setting essentially means the PC is set to lock after 2 minutes.)

However, what often happens is that I'm sitting at the PC, and the monitor turns off, but I don't want it to lock. I move the mouse, and it's locked--even if I intervened within a second or two.

With Windows XP, I used to be able to use the ScreenSaverGracePeriod registry value to work around this. I've tried this with my Windows 8 system, but it doesn't work. I have tried using ScreenSaverGracePeriod as both REG_SZ and as DWORD.

Is there any way to delay the PC from locking after the monitor powers off by just a few seconds? I know I can have the monitor power off after 2 minutes but set the screen saver to 3 minutes, but I'd like to reduce the delay to a matter of seconds, if that is possible.

Answer:Delay the time between monitor off and workstation lock?

Hello Crosspatch,

I suppose one way would be to disable screen saver password protection to prevent it from basically locking the PC and asking for a password when you resume from screen saver.

The only drawback is that you would then need to lock the PC when you do want it to be password protected when unlocking. If you like, the desktop context menu added by either tutorial below can help make it easier to lock the PC.

Hi

In Windows 10 v1511, how do I make sure that the lock screen does not display the time?

Thanks

Bye

Answer:Avoid the time display in the lock screens

This is for Windows 8: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2...ck-screen.html

but I can't find the equivalent for Windows 10 (yet).

Basically, I have some people that would jump at the chance to hop onto an Administrator's account due to the restrictions they have. That being said, even if I leave my notebook alone for 5 minutes, I want the darn thing locked.

Just due to the fact I personally like a couple of the new Vista screensavers, is there a way to both lock and immediately start the screensaver?

Answer:Lock Vista & Start Screensaver At Same Time?

Not sure why the screensaver would play into it, but whatever.

Set the screensaver to require a password on resume (even if the screensaver doesn't kick in automagically this is the proper setting), and press Windows+L anytime to lock the workstation immediately.

Hope this helps...

How do I remove the Caps and Num Lock indictor for a Lenovo G50, that is running Windows 10?

Answer:Remove Caps lock/Num lock indicator? (Windows 10)

Hi Thisismyname01 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

On a similar G50 , this was resolved by uninstalling Energy Management .

Another steps that was advised :

1. Opening Control Panel >Program and Features>Uninstall a Program and look for Caps OSD or Lenovo OSD

2. On the display properties of the graphic card , you may also configure to "Show indicator for a few seconds" .

3. Disable hotkeys from the BIOS ( but this may change all other usable hotkeys ) . Lets's reserve it a last option.

Update us what works for you.

Regards,

I'm not at all network savvy so my questions may be as dumb as it gets. I bought a Linksys 5-Port Workgroup switch and I'm wondering if I can connect 2 computers together?

I've done some investigating on the net and saw a picture that described a hub and another that described a switch. a hub had all the computers connecting to one node, the switch connects two computers to each other. Does this mean I wouldn't be able to connect more than 2 computers using this linksys switcher?

Also, what's a cat5 cable? an rj-45 cable? In the linksys box, it has 6 inputs, first five are labeled 1-5, and the sixth input is labeled "Uplink" and seems to be connected with the fifth input. What's this uplink for? what does it do? also, anyone know of a site that gives a step-by-step WindowsXP directions of how to set up a LAN? thanks a lot, i apologize but the net didn't dumb it down enough for me.

Paul

had to edit this. but connecting to the internet is not a concern, just connecting two computers together. and the model is a Linksys EZXS55W

For some reason (probably my fault) my computer is set to pacific time. I can change it on the taskbar to EST...but I think I need to change the system time someplace else, because my Outlook time is all screwed up, and other websites show the time incorrectly. (5 hours later than it should be)

Can anyone help?
Thanks.
Erin

I am running Windows XP Home.

Answer:Setting the time in XP?

You will need to go to the control panel and there should be an icon indicating time and date. You go there to change it.

Question: Setting the time

I'm running XP SP3 on my home PC which is in a Workgroup, fully up-to-date and have a fully functional ADSL internet connection. My time server is set to pool.ntp.org which I can ping ok. However, when I try to update the time I get the error "The RPC Server is unavailable". This happens whatever time source I set it to, including time.nist.gov. What should I amend to ensure I get the signal?
