Edge and keyboard shortcuts... what's wrong?

Question: Edge and keyboard shortcuts... what's wrong?

In general the upgrade path to Windows 10, starting from a W7 machine that went to W8 and then to W8.1 wasn't very smooth, but in the end, I have a fresh installation of Windows 10 on my box (for the record, I had to resize the system partition but the message to do so was cryptic and I had to download a third-party repartitioning tool, I wasn't given the chance to preserve my apps because setup decided to change my default language and then informed me that I can't preserve my apps due to the different language settings and, finally, even though the installer assured me that there were no compatibility problems with my machine, my scanner is apparently incompatible).
Anyway, this thread is about Edge: Keyboard shortcuts don't work on it. CTRL+T, CTRL+W, CTRL+F... nothing works. Everything works in IE, but the oh so hyped Edge ignores them.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Edge and keyboard shortcuts... what's wrong?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Edge, Microsoft's new browser, might be a rough diamond and you can make the most of it with a list of shortcuts we have compiled.

Keyboard shortcuts remain an essential tool for any computer user looking to improve their productivity, something not available on tablets or smartphones.

While the growing popularity of touchscreen computers means that some shortcuts are redundant, many will still prefer to use them because, well, they feel more natural and are usually a faster way of getting things done.

If you think we have missed some shortcuts, let us know in the comments.

machine: Dell XPS15 2014 with Windows 8.1
Windows 8 seems to have keyboard shortcuts that conflict with some software shortcuts.
I found this out when, using MS-Word, I hit the Ctrl + F1 shortcut, which toggles the ribbon, up to Windows 7.
Thanks to Windows 8, what this shortcut does is display a graphical representation of how bright the screen is.
Today, working with Adobe Indesign, I tried to use a shortcut specific to that software that allows one to create multiple instances of the same graphic - Alt + drag + right arrow key. What I got instead was my screen getting rotated 90 degrees.
This is a VERY serious issue, as clearly one can expect a raft of such Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts to interfere with professional workflow - just how many are there?
Can someone please confirm whether or not Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts can be disabled, and if yes, how.
Many thanks

I'm looking for a way to create click-able Icons/shortcuts for various keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+..., etc.).
[My mouse is very acessable, but my keyboard is not. I know about various on-screen keyboards; but I would prefer clickable Icons that I could put in my quick launch toolbar, for example.]

Is this possible to do within XP, or with some program I can install?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
EG:

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

Thank you so much for your time.

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

Hi, I inadvertently pressed something on my ThinkPad keyboard and it's now not typing what I expect to see. The language is set in the control panel to English UK and this hasn't been affected. However most of the letter keys are now acting as keyboard shortcuts. In Word 2010 this is what happens: 4 = ?e = ?r = registered symbolt = trademark symboly = puts cursor to beginning of linei = opens File menuo = puts document in outline viewa = ŗs = triggers split screend = enters a bookmarkf = enters a footnotel = starts a numbered listc = copyright symbolv = opens paste special dialog box I've obviously trigger some keyboard shortcut to change the settings but have no idea how. Need to reset this asap as it's my work laptop - IT team not able to help as I'm not on the company network and can't log on as my password can't be typed in accurately... Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I'm trying to create some shortcuts to my browsers on my new Windows 10 64bit PC, but I'm stuck on a couple issues:

- How can I create a private browsing shortcut for Opera? It's easy to do this for Firefox and Chrome - but I can't figure out how to do it for Opera.

- Is there still no way to create a desktop shortcut for the Microsoft Edge browser? I can't find any info on how to do this. And does Edge have a private browsing mode?

- Also, I'm trying to see if there's some add-on or some way I'm unaware of to shorten the url bar at the top of Opera and Firefox. In Chrome, I can just grab the right edge and move it over to the left to make more room for the extension icons. I have quite a few and in Opera and Firefox the url bar takes up a ton of the horizontal space, giving me little room for the addon icons.

I imported 25 items from IE 11 for my Favorites Bar. 17 is the max number that appears on the horizontal display of the Favorites Bar and 8 appear on the drop down portion below the 'V'. I found that I can drag and move ONLY the ones on the horizontal line to rearrange them, but that does not work on the ones on the drop down. I need to exchange four or five that appear on the drop down with others on the horizontal list to place them where I can easily access those which I use most often. Dragging or clicking doesn't work to move them from one location to the other. How can I rearrange them to the location I prefer?

Answer:Edge - Favorites Bar - How to move shortcuts?

Click on the Hub - the three horizontal lines near the right edge of the title bar. Then click on Favorites Bar and the list of all sites on the Favorites bar will appear in order. You can drag and drop them in the list.

I had to do a full system reinstall and I have called Dell Gold Technical Support for an answer, they could not help, as to why when I save a Shortcut to the desktop from a Website I get the Icon picture of the Browser I am using instead of the Websites own icon. This feature worked fine before the reinstall.
I am using Windows XP Pro on a laptop that is in a docking station.
I have searched help, etc. and cannot figure out why I end up with the Internet Explorer Icon Picture (or the SBC Yahoo Icon Picture) for say MapQuest and other websites, instead of the Websites Icon picture.
What setting do I change in Windows? Thanks for any answers.

Hi all
I'm new to the forum and looking for some help with a strange problem I am having with my windows 8.

I have an ASUS laptop running 8.0 which I am running with a second screen (dell monitor) connected via VGA. I have it set so the external monitor is the primary screen and the laptop is the secondary screen. It is set for a taskbar on each display, with the primary taskbar containing the shortcuts on the monitor, so when I click them they open there. It's been working fine for months.

So I switched it on today and my taskbar shortcuts have jumped to the taskbar on the second (laptop) screen, however my external display is still set as the primary and still has my desktop icons, trashcan etc but a blank taskbar (like the one that used to be on the secondary display)! When I click the shortcuts which are now on the taskbar of the laptop screen they open on the monitor. (ie the wrong screen) I disconnected the monitor, turned off the extended desktop and set it to just use the laptop screen. All my desktop icons moved to the laptop screen but the taskbar shortcuts vanished and I was left with a blank taskbar. If I plug the monitor in again and extend the desktop they reappear, but on the wrong screen. Even if I reboot without the external screen connected I get no shortcuts until I plug in the monitor and set it to extend the desktop. I have checked all the taskbar settings and they are all correct.

It's driving me nuts, can anyone please help?!
Thanks

Answer:Taskbar shortcuts appearing on wrong screen

More details... Although the taskbar shortcuts have moved to the second screen, the clock, tray etc is still where it used to be. It seems just the shortcuts are affected!

Thanks

I have a dual monitor setup with Monitor 2 being the main display. It has my start bar and everything loads up to it by default but after I shut down the computer and start it back up all my shortcuts moved over to Monitor 1. This is a small inconvenience but I would like them to load on Monitor 2 by default.

Note: Each time the computer has been shut off it's been because I've gotten a black screen and the computer becomes unresponsive while I can still hear videos and games running so I held the power button to force shut down.

Hello, I have installed Intellipoint 7.0 and the shortcuts display the wrong icons.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Intellipoint, and deleting the IconCache.db to no avail. If you right-click and select properties the change icon button is disabled. I would normally just create new shortcuts, but all of the shortcuts point to the same target (the Intellipoint directory in the Program Files folder). Could someone tell me how to correct this or explain how these strange shortcuts work?

Answer:Intellipoint Shortcuts Display Wrong Icons

Same problem:
IntelliPoint IPx64_1033_7.10.344.0 and IntelliType ITPx64_1033_7.00.260.0.
Tried uninstalling > boot > reinstalling, thought there might be something with my ACDSee so changed plugin settings in ACDSee for ICO - no change.
Adobe Reader icon was corrupt as well, but after upgrading version problem seem to have disappeared.
Only other corrupt icon I seem to find in Start Menu is the Microsoft Office Groove 2007 - tried to fix it with the Detect and Repair features of office - no change.

Any ideas how to address this?!

Hello, new to the forum.

First of all, I want to apologize in advance if this has been asked and possibly solved earlier, I tried performing a search but couldn't find anything. If there already is a solution to my problem on the forum, I would be grateful if someone can provide a link.

So basically, my problem is that start menu and desktop shortcuts for all programs I install point to the wrong locations.
This problem started happening after I recently reinstalled Windows, and as always, modified the registry to change the default "Program files" to the D:\ partition (My C:\ partition is reserved for Windows only)

I have made that change on earlier Windows installations, without any issues, but this time, shortcuts for all programs I install point to: D:\Program Files(x86)\, when in reality, most of these programs are 64 bit, and are located in the D:\Program Files\ directory.
The problem seems to only apply to 64 bit applications. If I install a 32 bit program, it will install in the x86 folder, and the shortcut will work properly.
I would greatly appreciate if anyone can come up with a solution to this problem as it is really annoying, because it basically renders all my start menu and desktop shortcuts useless.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Answer:Program shortcuts point to wrong folder locations

Maybe im missing something here but
I thought that you could not put 32bit progs in a 64bit folder and vice versa.
From what youve said, it sounds like you configured that folder as 32bit, but named it 64bit.

Hi,
Today I was asked to help in a problem with shortcuts in Windows 7 which pointed to the wrong non-existing location. The issue refers too all shortcuts connected with the Program Files folder.

As I didn't know what is the issue the first idea was to create a completely new profile (i.e. user account) to check if the problem arises there as well.
Fortunately the new profile/account was correct, all links were fine. It meant the problem was connected only with the first profile. That's why I decided to recreate the IconCache.db file by removing it and restarting the machine. Unfortunately it didn't help.

The system itself is a Polish edition of Windows 7 and because it works on 64-bit platform there are 2 folders for applications:
a) (for 32-bit apps) "c:\Program Files"
b) (for 64-bit apps) "c:\Pliki program?w (x64)"
Almost all programs are installed in b) but all corrupted links pointed to "c:\Program Files (x64)" instead of "c:\Pliki program?w (x64)". Somehow the links contained the English name ("c:\Program Files (x64)") instead of Polish one ("c:\Pliki program?w (x64)"). This was the reason they didn't work.

Do you have any idea what could happen and how to fix it ?

Thank you for help,
rafi

Answer:All shortcuts point to the wrong Program Files folder

Where are the faulty shortcuts located? On desktop or in startmenu ... or?

normal is:
C:\program files =>for 64bits
C:\Program Files (x86) =>for 32 bits

open command prompt

Code:
set
Do you see this in the list?
ProgramFiles=C:\Program Files
ProgramFiles(x86)=C:\Program Files (x86)
ProgramW6432=C:\Program Files
-------

c:\Program Files (x64) is very abnormal.... are you sure?

Here's what happened: -

1. I installed a program called "Acoustica CD Label Maker" and a shortcut with the same name appeared in the "A" section of the start menu, as expected.

2. I renamed the shortcut to "CD Label Maker" and it moved to the "C" section, again, as expected.

3. I renamed the shortcut back to "Acoustica CD Label Maker", but it remains in the "C" section.

I've tried rebuilding the index via Indexing Options. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, but the shortcut always appears under "C", even though its name begins with the letter A.

I've had this happen with a bunch of programs now. For instance, if I rename "Adobe Photoshop" to just "Photoshop", it remains in the "A" section of the start menu.

Any idea how I can fix this so that shortcuts appear under the correct letters? Thanks.

I am trying to help a friend who is TOTALLY non computer saavy. I have been helping him for a long time, but this time something got into his system that is horrible.

This system is running XP. About 2 weeks ago, all of his desktop icons vanished, so he had a blank desktop. When he went under Start>Programs, there was nothing there either. so I look and EVERYTHING in C:\Documents and Settings>NAME>Documents was hidden. AVG found a trojan, and system was cleaned using MalwareBytes, AdAware, and SpyBot S&D. I unhid everything and his desktop icons came back as did most of the Programs entries. But the start menu now is stuck with the 98 look and not the XP look (like the little user pic and all). But, icons and shortcuts worked. Then 2 days ago he calls again saying nothing works.

Now, the icons are there, but when you try to open a program the "Open With" dialogue comes up. This is true of desktop icons, Start Menu stortcuts, and even .EXE files selected in Windows Explorer. The only way to open a program and to right-click, and choose "Run As". It pops up a dialogue box with the current user selects and gives option to chosoe another user (there is non) and the program will open. So, I got the .EXE and the link repairs from the Doug Knox site and attempted to repair the associations. No effect. I have run CCleaner with no registry errors found. Have run AVG, Spybot S&D and Maleware Bytes in safemode and removed everything. I am not sure... Read more

Microsoft Edge browser became really buggy all of a sudden. I've done a clean Windows install soon after that (WIn10 build 1607), but the problem is still there. I have tried resetting the browser only, but no success. GPU drivers are up to date (R9 380). It only happens in Edge, all other browsers are fine. When I made a new local account, there were no problems.

Video upload (AK1G) - vidme

This kind of a twitch happens every now and then and I have to restart the browser so I can use it normally. It happens in all kinds of situations, while browsing, being open in the background or being completely idle. The apps which are running simultaneously become unresponsive until I minimize/ maximize/ switch between them.

Is there a way to fix this without making a new account?

I'm posting on behalf of a friends daughter. This problem arose when after her grandfather had been using her pc, which may or may not be coincidental. It would seem that they've accidentally turned on some special keyboard shortcuts, for instance, She'll be in Word and press D,and it goes back to the desktop. It's all single letters. She doesn't need to press CTRL, Alt or anything. They've tried plugging in another keyboard and I've searched through the accessibility options to see if they've turned anything on by accident but can't find anything that would do this.I'm sure I must be missing something simple here. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks

Recently transitioned from a Macbook Pro to the y40. Does anyone know the keyboard shortcut to switch from a full-screen application (i.e. while gaming) to the desktop, without simply exiting the game?

Answer:y40 keyboard shortcuts

hi GrClark,

If you have only one application running, pressing Alt+Tab should automatically minimize the full screen application that's currently running and will automatically switch to the desktop. Otherwise, you will need to hold the Alt key then continuously press the Tab key until you get the desktop icon.

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen,

I've been reading tutorials on keyboard navigation, as I'd like to learn to navigate Windows 10 without a mouse, and while I've mastered a few commands I'd like to know how to de-select highlighted text after CTRL-A has been pressed. I've pressed ESC and also tried the CTRL-Z undo command but it doesn't work. I am using Windows XP. I understand that you can assign a keyboard shortcut to open a program by right clicking the icon, selecting the shortcut tab and then entering the shortcut key you wish to open the program. Is there a way to assign a shortcut key not to a program, but to a file or document instead? If so, how can it be done?

Question: keyboard shortcuts

my freind's optical mouse froze the other day and, eventually, he got it going by shutting down everything right back to the mains. It raised the question "How can I move my cursor using the keyboard. I have tried using the Helproom to find out but, whereas there appears to be thousands of keyboard shortcuts I couldn't find one which advised how to use the keyboard to move the cursor. Any ideas? Thank you

Answer:keyboard shortcuts

Good question and one that deserves a better answer than this. It is possible to select items in any screen using just the tab, windows key, Alt key and arrow keys. It takes some learning and the best option is to get the mouse working by doing what your friend did - reboot! To help you do this remember Alt+F4 key shuts the active window. Use the tab key and enter key when prompted to save work to select Yes/No/Cancel. Use the Windows key to select the start button and then arrow keys to navigate to shut down. (In XP Windows Key + U + U does it)

Question: Keyboard shortcuts

Ok this is my set up: I've got two keyboards hooked up to my computer; they both function as normal keyboards, I just had a wired usb one set up because my batteries on my wireless keyboard ran out. So I just got this idea right now, influenced by the Optimus Keyboard.

So the idea is to create the secondary keyboard into all shortcut keys. Is that possible? I know it's probably not possible without proper drivers/ softwares and such. But have you ever heard of that? I mean, it seems like it'd look awesome: eye candy wise, ya kno?

that does sound pretty awsome, I have no idea how you would go about doing that, but if you do, let me know

I logged on to my pc this morning to find that several keyboard shortcuts have suddenly come into being without my asking them to! two examples are that shift+p now opens windows media player, which is incredibly annoying when you're trying to type. another is that tab now no longer cycles through fields, but brings up a little window of open programs. it may just be coincidence, but this pc did an automatic install of updates last night. how can i clear these shortcuts that i don't want????

as an update, i have just noticed two files on my desktop titled desktop.ini

the first contains this:
[.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21799

the second contains this:
[.ShellClassInfo]

IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

i presume these either have something to do with the cause of my problem, or are another symptom of it??

Hi folks!

Is there a way to access the Device Settings in the Mouse Properties via keyboard shortcuts? I can get to the Mouse Properties via Windows start button key > arrow navigate to control panel > arrow navigate to mouse icon > press enter. But I can't get to the Device Settings tab!

Fn + F9 doesn't work, by the way!

Any ideas!?

Answer:Keyboard shortcuts

Thought I'd let you know that I figured it out.

Solution is to press Windows button on keyboard. When the start menu pops up, use your arrow keys to navigate to the Control Panel. Press Enter key. When the Control Panel pops up, navigate using your arrow keys to the Mouse icon. Press Enter again. Now ,when Mouse Properties window pops up, use your Tab key to navigate to the tabs at the top of the window, then the arrow keys to navigate through the tabs to the Device Settings tab. The tabs should open as you navigate through them. Once there use the Tab key to navigate to the enable button. Press Enter.

Thanks for being here!

Well, no, either you disable all <WINDOWS>+<KEY> combinations, or keep all of them.

Is there any particular reason why you need to re-assign <WINDOWS>+<C>, <WINDOWS>+<UP>, <WINDOWS>+<DOWN>, <WINDOWS>+<DOWN> and <WINDOWS>+<SPACE>?

Hello, I'm working with a company who make communication device for people with speech impairments. Windows 8 is used as the operating system and, among many others, the built-in camera app is becoming popular. The easiest way for most of our clients to
use any program is with keyboard shortcuts so I've been given the task of figuring them out. I've figured out SPACE takes a picture, left/right scrolls through the pictures and +/- zooms. Does anyone know if there is documentation of others?

Answer:camera app keyboard shortcuts

SPACE takes a picture

Won't that depend on what button has keyboard focus?  E.g. you can tab to any button and then press Space to action it.  Standard windows UI.

http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-there-are-six-new-keyboard-shortcuts

If you are like many of the readers of Neowin, you likely downloaded the technical preview of Windows 10. If you did not, you can go here for the direct download links for both flavors of the OS.

While there are many new features like virtual desktops and the Start menu making its return, for keyboard lovers out there, Microsoft is also introducing six new keyboard shortcuts to take advantage of the new features.

All of the new shortcuts are posted below:
Snapping window: WIN + LEFT or RIGHT (can be used with UP or DOWN to get into quadrants)
Switch to recent window: ALT + TAB (unchanged) ? Hold shows new Task view window view, let go and switches to app.
Task view: WIN + TAB ? New Task view opens up and stays open.
Create new virtual desktop: WIN + CTRL + D
Close current virtual desktop: WIN + CTRL + F4
Switch virtual desktop: WIN + CTRL + LEFT or RIGHT
All of these new shortcuts work in the technical preview and knowing that the company will be adding more new features to Windows 10, we would expect that more shortcuts will be available in the final build of Windows.

Answer:How do you programming keyboard shortcuts

Might be worth looking at AutoHotkey. You can program keys with this, or if necessary do things with screen locations. Problem with the latter is it is only any good if you can be certain nothing will move. It can also run from a batch file, or batch files can run AutoHotKey scripts:http://www.autohotkey.com/As far as I know it is still free. I'm no programmer so you might be able to do a lot more with it than I do.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Is it possible to create a keyboard shortcut in Vista for text (e.g. a complicated name or a phrase) that can be used in any application? I know that custom shortcuts are possible for opening applications and I think it was possible to create text shortcuts in earlier versions of Windows, but I can't find any information on how this might be done in Vista.

A macro is what you are looking for.

I have never used it but give this a look

I have a new Windows 10 desktop machine & like to use keyboard shortcuts to launch programs & folders. Some of them work & some don't. Some work some of the time.

I saw some old threads on this, & tried some of their suggestions, like disabling Services/Superfetch & some background apps. When I tried this, it worked at first. I had no delay on a shortcut that previously didn't work. However, after rebooting, the hotkey didn't work any more.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?
Thank you in advance,

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me on this problem i hav regarding windows vista. I turned on my laptop and when I go to write something either on Word or the internet, for Eg, the letter L locks my laptop straight away, and C goes to the Control Panel, they seem to be automatic shortcuts, I have no idea how to stop this, i have tried useing the toggle keys, but this does not work for me, does anyone know?

Welcome
Per this MS Bulletin, the window key and L should lock the computer.
Is the window key stuck or do you depress it by accident?
Can you try another keyboard?
