Lenovo Flex 3 keyboard is weird

Question: Lenovo Flex 3 keyboard is weird

I have been in the market for a new laptop and decided to go with the Lenovo Flex 3 (which I didn't even know existed until a few days ago). It is so new that the only place that actually sells it is Lenovo.com. I got the one with the highest specs on sale. If you look on Flex 3 (15") | Affordable, Thin, & Light Multimode Laptop| Lenovo US you will notice something strange though. The keyboard for the i7 model is "Backlight French-English". None of the other ones are like that. The others all say "Backlight English".
I asked someone at Lenovo what that meant because I was concerned that it wasn't in QWERTY format. They said (and im not sure I believe them) that it only meant that some of the keys have French characters underneath them. The keys should be in the same spot. When I looked up images of French-English keyboards, a lot of them have 2 characters on EVERY key. It looks like the keyboard can either be in French or English mode, but it also looks confusing because the characters are the same size.
I asked Lenovo why the heck they would make 1 model that comes with a weird keyboard and every other model doesn't, and they didn't have an answer. I haven't received the laptop yet but im a little nervous as to what to expect. I love the specs and the design of the laptop, but if the keyboard is a jumbled mess of characters then I may regret my purchase. I don't look at the keyboard to type, but I still feel like it could be very confusing.
Has anyone seen a French-English keyboard? Is it hard to adapt to? Can I expect the occasional small French character or a whole keyboard full of French letters?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo Flex 3 keyboard is weird

If you'd like to see the keyboard up close, here is an image of what Lenovo does with French-English Keyboards. This is NOT a photo of the Flex 3, but of an older model laptop that they used a French-English keyboard. It may give you an idea of what one might look like. It basically makes it easier to enter French accent characters.

I just purchased a Lenovo Y50 UHD about a week ago, and the keyboard has been really bugging me. All the keys in the near vicinity of the 'G' and 'H' key in the center of the keyboard for some reason trigger a weird flex/trampoline style effect, which is very noticeable compared to keys near the edge of the keyboard (Tab, Q, number pad, etc.) I'm not sure if this is something that is prevalent in all models of the Y50 or Y50 UHD so it'd be great if i got some feedback from other owners. I'm definitely considering returning if this is a common problem. Thanks.

I have a Lenovo Flex 2-15 that doesn't have a backlit keyboard. I know that the keybord can be taken off, so can the non-backlit keyboard be replaced by a backlit version. Would the process void the warranty and where can I buy the backlit keyboard replacement?

Hello! I bought a Lenovo Y50 UHD laptop about 3 weeks ago. So far I have but one problem (besides 48hz...), and that is that I can notice some keyboard flex around the keys "5" and "4" on the number pad and around "." and ",". My roommate also got this laptop and on his laptop, there is no noticable keyboard flex anywhere on the keyboard. Is there anything I can do to fix this or is there a way that something (customer service or computer techs like Geek Squad) that can fix this?

I noticed with the T500 I purchased there existed some keyboard flex. I got sort of used to it. One of the keys broke (my own doing). I replaced the keyboard from my old T60 (FRU No: 42T3209). Wow! What a huge difference. The old design is superior in every way. It does weigh a little more but the difference in feel and ruggedness make it a much better choice. I am going to order a second 42T3209 keyboard for the T60. If anyone gets annoyed with the keyboard flex, I suggest searching (ebay, parts surplus) for the 42T3209 keyboard. To Lenovo: Please consider the old keyboard design in future models. Thank you.

Answer:Dear Lenovo, keyboard flex ...

I called Lenovo complaining about the same issue on my W500. The first person turned me down but the second rep ordered me a stronger keyboard, shipped next day air, 100% free-of-charge.

Hi everybody I am new in this forum. I have a new Flex 2 14 since some days and I am trying to figure out how the keyboard works. I used to work with one Mac and typing characters was pretty easy.. what appears just on the keys ti will be typed when I write. Now with my new  Flex 2 it doesn't seem to work like that anymore. I have some blue keys that work when the keyboard is set as English Canadian multilingual.. others that don't write at all what is written on them.. (example the blue key give me the " " when i type on it, and I found by chance how to type the " " character). Yesterday while I was writing an e-mail I needed to type the " " but I wasn't able to find the key equivalent on the keyboard so I had to use the touchscreen keyboard to get right my " ". Another time I was looking to insert the " [ " brackets but I had to change the language on my keyboard from " English Canadian" to "English US" to get them. Can I make my typing easier? Is there any way to get all the basic symbols on my keyboard without switching language or using the touchscreen keyboard?I would like to make faster writing as I was used to do with my Mac. I looked for instructions but nothing is specified. Thank you for your help

Hello, I have a Lenovo flex 2 14 coming in from France which is fine except it comes with an azerty keyboard. Basically what I want to know is if I buy lets say the flex 15 keyboard, would the size of the keys measure to be the same size as the flex 14 keys (for example the A key on the flex 14 and the A key on the flex 15 will they be the same measurements and would the key fit?). I also want to know if I bought the older flex 14 keyboard if that would fit in the flex 2 14. thanks for any answers.

Hi all. So 2 days ago I was using the laptop for some course work, I then went asleep for maybe 2 hours and when I woke up I was unable to use the touchpad or kyboard. Now I had this issue before but it seemed to fix itself after a day or two. So far I have reset the computer while keeping all my own files, updated, deleted, reinstalled the drivers multiple times, removed the keypad to ensure the ribbon wasn't loose etc etc. I have since been able to get the touchpad to work by messing with the drivers but the keyboard remains the same. I oticed I am able to use it when either the laptop is held at an angle or if the screen if opened up almost flat. I'm guessing this is a driver issue but I can't for the life of me figure out how to resolve this. The laptop is a few years old so no warranty. I've done a lot of reading online about this issue and it seems many people have had the same problem but no posts gave me any real solution. Any help is very much appreciated. I relly don't know what to do now.

I spilled water on my laptop a few days ago. My screen was fine at first, but then (I assume) water got into some part of the hardware. Now the display is barely visible. I think it could be the inverter board that was affected, but I want to know how to fix it/what part(s) I need.In addition, my keyboard doesn't work. The touchscreen keyboard doesn't work either. I can tap on the keys, but nothing shows up. What is affected so that I can't even use the touchscreen keyboard? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Water spilled into a laptop can cause a variety of problems as well as short  circuits.  It would be difficult to pin point exactly where your problems lie.  I suspect though that laptop isn't thoroughly dried out yet which maybe part of the problem.  I would suggest you open it up and let it continue to dry out, before proceeding further.  For your reference here is a link to your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual.......

Does anybody know is Lenovo Plan to bring out an updated keyboard for the Lenovo Flex 15D or Flex Series Ultrabooks? I have had mine now for 2 Weeks and am extremely hapy with its well built construction and its performance however it is missing a crucial peice of technology. A Backlit Keyboard. As Good as the keyboard is and my eyesight for that matter. This machine would seriously benifit from a Back Lit Keyboard. If anyone has any surgestions then please let me know.

Right now I have a problem with the w key on my laptop key board.  For all the other keys it registers a press when you feel the key give way.  However for my w key you do not have to press it, only rest you finger lightly on it and it will register a keystroke.  This is a problem for me because I rest my finger on W S and E all at the same time which leads to a lot of random w's throughout my typing.  Let me know if there is anything I can do other than replace my keyboard.

Answer:Lenovo Flex 3 1580 Keyboard problem

Hi 18jadietrich,

Greetings.

Try if you have the same issue using an external USB keyboard.

As the way described seems to be mechanical in nature and may need hardware servicing.
If your warranty is still active, best to call in technical support to avoid voiding warranty.

Users are not required to do manual troubleshooting other than checking if the W key is cleared from foreign materials causing this using compressed air cans.

Hope this help answer your query.

Keyboard is turning on and off when in normal laptop mode. the switching on and off is as though laptop is switching to tablet mode/ being turned. I think it may be loose keyboard wires. This started recently and can't relate to any software change or incident to system. Keyboard works fine when raising the laptop with a thumb while on table or plain surface.See the video I uploaded of the issue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbdehSyYGpg

I recently purchased this laptop and did not spend any time playing on the keyboard prior to the purchase.  I am now regretting this purchase as I cannot understand nor adapt to the right shift key not being in the standard location. Why would Lenovo design a keyboard that would not be conducive to touch typing? I cannot seem to change my 45 years of touch typing experience to accomadate this major change.  It makes no sense.  Is anyone else having this issue and what if anything can be done about it?

Hello, My parents have owned a Lenovo laptop for a couple of years now. However, recently this issue showed up and I wondered whether there is a chance there is a solution to this problem which I could try myself, since the laptop its warranty already expired. If I recall correctly, the model of the laptop is the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 2, running Windows 10. So here is the issue; the laptop has issues turning on. Oddly enough, it is not a very consistent issue. Eventually, the laptop does turn on. The problem is that this sometimes takes hours, other times the laptop appears to be able to boot instantly as it normally would. I have no idea what affects this. When pressing the power button, the keyboard backlight starts flashing. It does this until the laptop completely boots, and as I said, the amount of time this takes varies. I already tried looking for solutions on different forums, but they usually concern the issue where the keyboard backlight flashed and the laptop simply will not boot at all, which is not the case here, as it eventually does but often it takes a while.Other solutions suggested a certain amount of flashes meant a certain issue or failure. Problem here is that the amount of flashes seem to be random, so it is not as if it just keeps looping a certain amount of flashes as it varies. This leaves me puzzled as to what could be the culprit. I am not sure what to do, especially since I have not owned a Windows-based machine in a whi... Read more

Hi itsasin,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would you have the machine number or MTM to verify the model (you can also get from here)?

Isolating the point of failure may be necessary to determine if the delay on start up is a power issue or a boot problem.
Try removing the harddrive so we can test if the machine can power faster.
You can download the hardware manual from the support website for removal guide.

I have a LeNovo Flex 3 1480 [80R3] for about a year with zero problems. The only modded thing is a Sandisk 480gb SSD drive, with a Windows 10 installation from scratch, installed in the very first day I bought this machine. I was running Windows 10 version 1607 normally, and really enjoying this machine, but since last week when I was booting up, the machine freezed at bootscreen (the one with the lenovo logo) and then restarted showing the message "Preparing Automatic Repair" that took almost a whole day to pass. The repair never happened and I had to use the option to reset windows maintaining my personal files. Hi all, recently, I've encountered a problem with my laptop, Lenovo Y460p.
Although I'm not typing anything, the vertical symbol ||||||||| keeps coming out. I didn't press anything, automatically came out.
It will also automatically open Internet Explorer.
When I press a key, eg. K. It will stop for a second and continue coming out. More Internet explorer will open too.
When I close it opens again.
It is very irritating and annoying. I can't type. By after awhile, the problem MIGHT stop for awhile but still continue. I can't even play or surf the net properly

What could the problem be? Any ideas? Please help

Initially, the keyboard was working just fine. Howevee, out of the blue the keys: t, y, shift, and backspace do not respond at all anymore. The touch screen keyboard works so i believe the error is in the physical keyboard. I am not using an external keyboard and hope to get some help in resolving thos problem before i start college!  This is only one of the pronlems i have with this computer but the only one that needs fixing. Please and thanks in advance.

Answer:Weird keyboard problem, Lenovo p400 touch (Please help)

hi epicgear60,

Try booting the system in Safemode.

But if it's still the same
If the System is still in warranty It would be best to call Lenovo Technical Team,
Or If you're comfortable checking the Keyboard Cable connection, You can check this maintenance Manual of your system to get access to Keyboard connection, Remove and reconnect the Connection and see if that'll work.

I have a Lenovo Flex 2-15 that doesn't have a backlit keyboard. I know that the keybord can be taken off, so can the non-backlit keyboard be replaced by a backlit version. I would have thought it would be possible as someone could request a backlit keyboard part for their laptop maybe? Would the process void the warranty and where can I buy the backlit keyboard replacement?

Answer:Lenovo N100 0768 DKU : Windows XP Laptop Keyboard - weird problem

It sounds like you might have some debris cluttering under those keys(due to the proximity of the output keys appearing on your screen), perhaps clearing them out could solve the problem. Otherwise, maybe the keyboard layout could have been accidentally set for a different language than the one you want to use. Hope this helps.

I am currently using a Lenovo Flex 3 1470 and the keyboard for it stopped working and now I can't type any numbers or activate any function keys. I have spilled tea on my laptop and got it wet in the past so I am now looking to get my keyboard replaced.  I have managed to find some Flex 2 14 inch US keyboards on eBay for less than $20 that look exactly the same as the one on my laptop, but I can't be certain unless someone confirms.  Are the 2 keyboards the same?

Hi, I have a Lenovo Flex 2 14 which came with a British keyboard but I noticed you can take off the keyboard and swap it out for another one - you can find backlit versions, or a version with a different layout. I got a keyboard for it with Japanese hiragana on it, but the laptop doesn't seem to recognise any of the extra keys this keyboard comes with which have key codes not used by other languages. These keys include: | -? \ ??????the ????, ???? and ???? toggleI would have assumed this was to do with the fact that these are keys from a 106/109 key layout as opposed to the standard 102 key, so I replaced the keyboard driver with Microsoft's 106/109 key keyboard driver, but that hasn't had any effect - it still can't see these keys being pressed. The ??/?? ?? key works because it uses the same key code as the tilde on other keyboards, but that's all. My hypothesis for why this might not be possible to fix is that the ribbon connection between the keyboard and the motherboard could only support 102-key layouts in Europe, and therefore the only way to be able to use these extra input conversion keys without a different motherboard altogether would be to use an external USB keyboard. I may have just made up what I said about the motherboard though, so does anyone know if there's a driver I can use to solve this problem and be able to use the extra keys? I can't just use a key mapper like KeyTweak ... I've been using conservation mode for my new (1 month) lenovo laptop every time I put the AC adapter in it. I thought that this was going to help me endure my battery life, but in the end I've stacked with the fact, that battery's stamina went much more lower. For example, I could use my laptop in a battery economy mode/conservation turned off for 5-6 hours, now it barely lasts 3 hrs with the same settings and the same pattern of usage. Just for record, 21 minute of watching a film costs my battery from 10-20% now, while before it was not an issue at all, I hardly can tell that it drained me more than 5%. Also, right now, while typing this, I've noticed, that behaviour of my percentage bar is also really strange: first it shows 75%, then, after 5 minutes, it showes 73%, without getting through 74%. And as a one big plus to that, my battery status says that my battery is normal, just normal, while before it was great or something like that. I find it strange because it is 1 month old notebook, as I mentioned earlyer. Now I am trying to recalibrate my battery, for the 3d time, hoping it would help me, but I really wish to hear your opinion about that, maybe there is something that I don't know about, something that can help me. P.S. It is 70% now, gezus

Just unboxed my Lenovo Flex 3 and so far I pretty much love it. My only problem is I cannot access the "Lenovo Settings" app on Windows 8.1. It asks if I want to send info back to the devs to help with the app but then it freezes and sends me back to the desktop. Is there a fix for this problem? Also, I am unsure how to change my preferences for my trackpad. I go to Control Panel, but there is no option for "Mouse" like I am used to to adjust my touch preferences. Any help on this too?  Thanks guys,Stephen

I just bought a flex 2 15, which I settled on because I wanted to buy from a brick and mortar store so I can return easily if I Dont like it. I'm slightly concerned with the amount of flex in the keyboard even with light typing. As I plan on using this for school, and a lot of typing, is this am issue I should consider returning it for? Thank you in advance for any advice!

Answer:Flex 2 15 keyboard flex

hi eod_mickelson,

Welcome to the Forums.

I haven't seen anyone reported any issue about the keyboard being mushy when being pressed but there were reports about the keyboard suddenly not working from the thread below:

Flex 2 15 Keyboard problems

Although the keyboard being disabled is a normal feature on this machine while on tent mode, I don't think this will cause a problem in the wrong run (unless you feel uncomfortable with the mushy feeling while typing)

Hi, I have a lenovo flex 2-14, It was working fine for a year. The moment my 1 year onsite warranty ended, after 5 days, It won't turn on. It was on charging and I had put it to sleep, when I came back, It won't turn on, tried everything, removing charger, long press, etc . Then I went to Lenovo service center, they removed the battery, placed it again and it started working fine. So, I came back home. After I came back home I noticed that my touchpad buttons were stucking up somewhere while pressing. I use my mouse mostly, so ignored. Now, it has been 3-4 days since that & I'm facing this issue:1) Most of the times, laptop won't turn on while plugged in2) As it won't start while plugged in, I would unplug the charger from the laptop and try powering it On, still it won't turn On. Tried many times. (I tried to press the power button and listen if there is any sound, yes there was very faint sound for few seconds and then it would go off, It happened every time I checked)3) It would turn after around 15 minutes. (Happened 3-4 times). I am unable to understand what is wrong exactly. Also, I hope it won't go off fully like the first time when I had to visit the service center. Please help me if you have any solution for this.

Right, you mentioned it turned blue with a sad face, that is a Blue Screen of Death (or proper term is Kernel bugcheck) which indicates something has gone wrong.

Hi to all...I've lenovo g560 laptop whose keyboard is not working properly. Now, a replacement laptop keyboard for lenovo g570 is available at local market. So, will it be compatible with my lenovo g560..Thanks in advance

Answer:Is lenovo g570 laptop keyboard compatible with lenovo g560's keyboard

hi hamzaali52,

Welcome to the Forums.

Looking at the keyboard part numbers for the G560 (see page 79-80 of the HMM) and the G570 (see page 79-83 of the HMM), there are no matching part numbers between the two models, thus, the keyboard may fit but it may not work due to a whitelist of compatible parts or due to a different keyboard ribbon/cable layout.

I recommend you stick to the part numbers listed on the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual) for best compatibility.

I am really dissapointed with the thinkpad service here in India. I purchased my laptop from Thailand and now I have been in India for a while. What is up with the keyboard layout for the Flex 4 14"?  The page up arrow button is where the shift button should be so if you need to capitalize a letter using your right hand you have to stretch out to reach it & it's smaller than the one on the left side.  I had the Flex 3 same size with a normal layout. ???  Don't want to go with the 15" but may need to drop down to the Flex 3.

Hi all. I have already posted this once here. The topic had quite a few views and not a single reply. I'm giving this another try, as the problem persists and is not getting any better.

The keyboard on my Aurora m9700 is having some strange issues. I cannot figure if it is software or hardware related, either. At random intervals, the keyboard will cease function. But when I go into standby, then come out of standby the problem seems to be magically fixed! In fact, the problem just happened right after I finished typing the last sentence. I checked event manager, nothing changed. I had to go into standby and come out of it...

So please, is there anyone on here that can help me out? I have reformatted the computer since this started happening and nothing has changed, so I do not know what could possibly be causing this!

Answer:Weird keyboard laptop issue. Keyboard randomly stops functioning until I standby.

Just going to keep bumping this until I get a reply, or bet banned. Every thread has some form of reply...maybe I smell or something?

I recently got a T430 and noticed there is some flex on the left side of the keyboard, and also in the area of the trackpoint. It makes the keys there sound slightly more "hollow" than on the right side where there is no flex. It's a minor issue but it is slightly annoying, is there a way to fix this or am I just being overly picky?

Answer:T430 keyboard flex?

Hi, zach890

I've never heard of this issue before, so it should be possible to fix. One thing you could try is to remove the keyboard from the system and inspect the underside of the keyboard, as well as the components underneath and the bezel for any irregularities.  The keyboard is removable by customer without voiding the warranty, but I would recommend to be careful just to make sure nothing happens to the system.

To remove the keyboard, you will need to remove the battery and then the memory module slot cover. There will be two screws in here that need to be removed. Once done, the keyboard can gently be lifted from the system and removed. You can find a video demonstrating any of these steps here. Also, here is the Hardware Maintenance Manual, where removal steps for items are also listed. Let me know if you've any questions.

Best,
Adam

Question: Keyboard Flex T520

Hallo Everybody, I received my T520 (ThinkPad T520 4243-3VG) last week. One thing which struck me (having a rock hard Keyboard on my T500) was a slight but noticeable flex on the left side around the letter "D". Is not a deal killer, but distrubing nonetheless. Hello !I have a Lenovo Flex 14 Touch (i3, 4Go, Win 8.1 64bits) for nearly a month now, and it's quite perfect. Only one thing (or 2 in 1) bothers me : - the virtual keyboard won't remain on screen, it closes itself without doing anything... the problem is happening either i have opened the virtual keyboard myself (in the task bar) or when it's triggered automaticcaly when i'm in touch mode (to enter login and password for example). This is annoying when i want to use the laptop in touch mode AND use the virtual keyboard...- second trouble : when i'm in touch mode, and i want to come back in classic mode with the physical keyboard, this one is going nuts : the letters won't work or they are doing some shortcuts i didn't ask for... this trouble is more disturbing, considering that i have to reboot my laptop to solve it. All the last drivers are installed, all the Windows updates as well. I couldn't find any results on google or lenovo community, so i'm asking for help here  Thanks for your future answers !

Question: W701 Keyboard Flex

Seems like the left side of the keyboard is loose or flexes more than the right side.  Not solid.  Does anyone else have this issue or know of a fix? Regards,Dale

Answer:W701 Keyboard Flex

I'm having this issue with my W701, too.  I've tried affixing several small patches of double-sided tape between the keyboard bezel and the bottom of the left-hand side of the keyboard. It helped reduce the flex 'locally' whether the double-sided tape has been applied but appeared to induce 'local' flex to the part of the keyboard without the double-sided tape applied. I think the reason is that the double-sided tape had made the bottom surface of the keyboard more uneven. So, this is sadly not a solution.

Just got a Flex 2 15 laptop yesterday and the keyboard stopped working.  I thought I had done something to shut off or disable the keyboard but when googling the problem, this seems like it is a some what reoccurring problem.  The operating systems is 8.1 and it has the touch screen....  I ended up going to the device manager to uninstall the key board per a hint I read online.  After uninstalling the key board and restarting the computer the keyboard started functioning again along with the touch pad. Is this a common problem with Lenovo or windows 8.1 versions.  Seems to be be quite a few hits on this when searching..... Any feedback...

Hi all, I recently got my Thinkpad W520 and I staight away observed a flex on the keyboard near the nav pointer (key presses around it make a different noise compared to the other end of the keyboard).  Also, near the power button, I can hear different sound and when i press around the power button, I can clearly see that the plastic goes in & out. Even at the bottom of the lcd screen(not on the screen) i can see this flex and it looks solid in all other parts. Is this expected?  Or did i get a defective one? Thanks in advance. Cheers,Robustm My System W520 427637U - i7 2720Q - 8GB - NVidia Quadro 1000

Answer:W520 flex on the keyboard

The keyboard of my W520 flexes near the navigation keys as you described. This has happened since W510. I opened the keyboard and notice that the base plate of W520 keyboard is even thinner than that of W510. I attached some little pieces of 1-mm thick 3M double-sided adhesive tape between the keyboard and the structural frame. It helps.

That brought me to the question, when they're basically the same model, couldn't i replace my non lit keyboard with one of those shiny premiums the Intel models get? Upon receiving my T420s I immediately noticed that there was some pretty serious keyboard flex on the lower right corner.  Just recently I sent it in to Lenovo for repair in  an attempt to fix this and other various cosmetic issues. This is a video I took after I got my laptop back from the depot....they actually replaced the keyboard but this obviously didn't fix the core issue at all...I really didn't appreciate the stupid stickers they left around with the case number on my adapter and optical drive either...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrvkLuF3n7A Needless to say this hasn't been the most pleasant purchase experience for me - I've been plagued by various little defects such as the fan noise issue and various little creaky spots on the laptop which weren't really fixed at all when I sent it in to the repair depot. Does anyone else see any flex on the lower right portion of their T420s keyboard as well or am I just terribly unlucky?I know that some duct tape / felt behind the keyboard could probably fix this but I would prefer it if Lenovo would have this all working perfectly so that don't have to resort to taping stuff up.

Hi: This post is primarily directed toward any Lenovo Representative on this board, but comments from all are welcome. I am and my company are lifelong Thinkpad users (first IBM, now Lenovo). I recently purchased the S10, and LOVE it! However, I have one problem: The upper right quadrant of the keyboard has SIGNIFICANT flex.  This is NOT subtle. It is both visible (you can see the keyboard go up/down), and audible (when you press a key in that area, you can hear the keyboard as it reaches bottom). It makes typing on that side of the keyboard very difficult. In particular, the large BackSpace and Enter keys are particularly troublesome. I have had thinkpads with keyboard flex problems before, and have solved the problem by reseating the keyboard. But, I have no idea how to do it on this machine. Is there a hardware manual? Is it even possible to do? If not, what should I do. I really do not want to send a machine I just received yesterday in for repair. If there is no other way, how do I exchange it for another one? Thanks, Leon

usually if the unit is bought from an authorized reseller(or valued business partner), you will enjoy an "express warranty" for lets say one week or one month or 15days(depending on the merchantability contract), which will include outright replacement. you can call them and ask for a "system exchange."Message Edited by techtroubadour on 10-12-2008 11:37 AM

I know there's a thread in the general forum about flex, but that seems to apply just to the T and W series. I just got my CTO SL500 and I'm a little conflicted about it and wondering what, if anything, to do.  I know this is Lenovo's entry level line so my expectations are not as high as they would have been on a T series, and I'm perfectly willing to live with things like the glossy plastic lid and the lack of a roll cage. But I am having trouble with this keyboard.  Mine flexes quite a bit on the left; about a millimeter or maybe two.  I can feel it in normal typing.  I can even see that the keyboard does not lie flat; there's a little "hill" on the left side.  I've never had another laptop like that, of any brand, and I wanted this one partly for the famous Thinkpad keyboard (which I've got plenty of experience with on older models). I guess my question is, have others had this experience on the SL series?  Is it normal and should I just live with it?  (I'm not sure if I can.)  Or has anyone gotten an SL500 with a keyboard that does *not* flex?  I read the notebookreview.com review, which does mention flex, but in their pictures the keyboard lies flat.  Mine does not.  So I think mine is probably worse than theirs was. Thanks for any advice.  I like the laptop otherwise, but this keyboard seems kind of a joke.  And that's really disappointing.

Answer:SL500 keyboard flex?

Hi Spacecadet! I thought to join the club.. =) I'm having a brand new SL500 too and my keyboard has similar "feature". I'm not sure does it flex, but when I type, letters W, S, A ,Q those snap or makes that king of sound. It's annoying when www -pages has suprise, W -letter It doesn't matter as SL500 is "cheap" but still... =| Maybe this is cause on flexing, I have to check...

Question: W530 keyboard flex

Hello, Previously I have posted a question concerning replacing the keyboard on the W530, even though this has nothing to do with the issue I am experiencing now. I am aware of the fact that I am not the only one that is experiencing keyboard flex in the left section of the keyboard. But when I press with a tad of force, I actually hear how the back of the keyboard hits the fan (which concerns me badly.) Upon ordering, the only change I made in hardware on the official lenovo website was choosing the option to put in a backlit keyboard (which resulted in longer shipping, etc etc). I am wondering if this flex and fan hitting thing are normal things, and perhaps caused by the thinkpad being opened up and having the keyboard replaced with another one? Thanks in advance!

Question: w510 keyboard flex

does anybody have problems with the keyboard flexing? i noticed after 2 months of having the w510 that it flexes pretty noticeably when i press Q, D, `, and ]. i'm putting quite some pressure on the keys but it doesn't happen when i push other keys.  maybe i'm just being nitpicky. or i don't know how to test for keyboard flex..lol

Answer:w510 keyboard flex

I cannot say as I've seen that sort of thing. Have you had the keyboard out to install RAM or some other reason? I did find it a little tricky to get it back in right. While generally I thought the operation was a lot easier than on older ThinkPads, you don't have to disassemble the unit as much, the trade-off seems to be that the keybord kind of lays on top of the unit, and press fitting it to get it back in place is non-trivial. I could see if that was not done properly, there would be a gap, could lead to flexing. Also, no way to really ask this delicately, but are you by any chance a keyboard pounder? I ask because I've observed some people really pound away at the keys when typing, always amazed they don't hurt their finders or at least their speed.

Question: W500 Keyboard flex

Reading some old thread, I came across Mark's post saying that the keyboard has been fixed. But my new W500 which I recieved today tends to flex around on the left side. Am I the only one facing this issue right now?? Haven't called their sales dept. yet, will do so on Monday. And I should also mention this...there is a strange noise from the HDD sometimes..don't know if thats normal Message Edited by sovk on 07-04-2009 01:34 AM

Answer:W500 Keyboard flex

The company i work for buy a lot of Thinkpads and several of the new T500/W500 we bought got the keyboard with the flex issue so Lenovo still sell new computers with this keyboard even if they are aware of the problem. I'm not sure what kind of noise your hear from the HDD so don't know about that one, but the HDD shouldn't be very noisy.

Question: X301 Keyboard Flex

I am a new Thinkpad owner. Just received my X301. The flex around the letter Q, and P, seem more than I had expected. The surrounding keys flex with the respective keys. Is this normal behaviour? Or do I have a defective keyboard? Thanks for any feedback.

Several topics are dedicated to similar problems, but none seem to be identicsl to what i'm experiencing.A while ago, my flex4 14in , barely a month old, started to act funny: during startup, keyboard and mouse stop working...I've tried resetting my pc, once keeping my files and once removing them, and the same thing happened: after a couple of days of working fine, keyboard and mouse would stop working and the computer starts up in portrait mode... please help

Question: T400 Keyboard flex

I have a T400 bought last September and is of the 2764 machine type. The keyboard is extremely flexy, bowing downwards even with slight pressure. It seems like I received an early generation model without the extra keyboard bracing. I've sent the laptop to EasyServ twice to get the keyboard stiffened, but the problem has not been solved at all. I'm planning on installing the additional bracing myself, so does anyone know how I can the additional keyboard bracing? Thanks.

Hey, Sorry about questions about my newly arrived T420si but I have another quick question: There is some minor keyboard flex  at the upper right corner around backspace and especially delete keys. Is this normal? I know all crappy laptops have keyboard flex, some too horrific degrees and this minor does not bother me at all, but I am worried that this is a sign of a bigger thing. Anything ideas??

Answer:t420s keyboard flex

Hello elalemever

The flex could be minor however, I would suggest you to get it check once. It may require the keyboard replacement.

I ordered my W500 on 05/06 and recievered it on 05/20. My W500 keyboard is flexible on the left side and make a ton of noise when typing. Had Lenovo improved their flex keyboard? Anyone has the same case like me??

Answer:W500: Keyboard flex

if the keyboard is not flat, remove the palm-rest, and then the keyboard.next go over the entire keyboard area with a fine toothed comb, and make absolutely sure that every wire is sitting neat and tidy and in its place. even an unplanned twist in a wire may hold the keyboard up and cause the flex. the keyboard should sit totally flat on its own, without the screws/palm-rest to hold it down.

Flex Advanced keyboard

Aimed at on-the-go professionals, the Flex Advanced keyboard is the perfect marriage of portability and flexibility. Paramedics, enforcement officers, LAN gamers, and eccentrics alike will appreciate the durability and feature-filled functions of this spill, muck, and bio-waste resistant keyboard.

The main features of this keyboard are portability and durability, and it succeeds well in those two departments. This keyboard can be wrapped up, folded, and rolled in almost any way you can think of. You can carry it in some awkward spots, and it still works just as well when you unwrap it. My personal favorite way to carry it around is to just fold it in half, and put it in my binder that I take to school.

The keyboard is basically sealed up tight, so if you spill something on it, you can just rinse it off, and wipe it dry without harm coming to it. This is especially helpful in high-traffic areas, such as a cyber caf. About the only dangerous element to the Flex Advanced is acid, as this will destroy it.Click to expand...

Hello, I was just wondering if someone could help explain a possible reason on why there is flex on 1 side of the keyboard (particularly on the following keys: -Caps Lock, A, S ,D ,) . The other side of the keyboard is sturdy and good. I would like to know why is it like this on the X220 (I have not faced this problem on my previous Thinkpad purchases ie. R60, Z60m, and R400). Feedback would be deeply appreciated. ThanksGale

Answer:Keyboard Flex on 1 side

Hello nitegale and welcome to community,

It could also be that the keyboard has not been properly fitted, you just need to remove the keyboard and reseat it.

I am planning to buy SL510.I  googled and have read that a few people buyed models with keyboard that flexes .I haven't found anything on this forum. Is keyboard suppose to flex or flexing means that it is bad model?

Answer:SL510 keyboard flex

I have the SL500 and have used a number of other SL500 and SL510 laptops.  The keyboards on this model work well but they are designed with price as the primary focus.  The best way I can desribe the feel is slightly "spongy" as in it will bend a little of you press on it.  I really disliked this at first and felt it was very cheap, as my previous laptop keyboard was very firm and solid.  Now that I'm used to it I don't even notice it anymore unless I use a much more expensive machine, just keep in mind that the SL series gives you a lot of computer for your money, they had to shave costs somewhere.
