Torrex Pro app, free?

Question: Torrex Pro app, free?

I just downloaded this torrent app "Torrex Pro" from the Windows Store Torrex Pro app for Windows in the Windows Store. Has it been free for a long time? I think it was like 7.99 before.

Preferred Solution: Torrex Pro app, free?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Torrex Pro app, free?

All the Boo Studio apps became temporarily free when they were republished under the new company name of Finebits O. Now they are slowly going back to being paid apps one by one.

Hi,
Lately I'm unable to download torrents on my Lumia 625 via Torrex Pro. Everytime I add a torrent it asks for selecting a folder to download and then it comes back to the main screen of the app. Any help on this?
P.S. wPtorrent has stopped initiating the torrent download since 8.1 update. So I'm stuck with none of the clients working.

As per the instructions here I am attaching the required zip file. I get BSOD every 5 mins running Torrex for win 10. I contacted Torrex support and they sent me a beta version but without success on an HP laptop. With a Lenovo Torrex runs without any problems. I had the HP reformatted twice to factory settings by a technician but no resolution. I updated all drivers still no resolution.

Answer:BSOD with Torrex on one laptop but not another. Both running win 10

I downloaded Torres lite version then I uninstalled it. Then I wanted tp install it again but when go to the store it says it is already installed on my surface 2. But it doesn't appear on my apps list. Any suggestions in how to uninstall the app fully?

Answer:I downloaded a Torrent client (torrex), now why can't I uninstall it?

Ah that problem exists on RT too, such a stupid problem that can't happen except on a stupid OS, this problem drove me nuts on Windows 8, I remember that I had to reboot to fix it, my guess you already did.

I thought it would be a good idea in keeping with the overall goal of this site to start a thread to give people a list of legal and secure sites for downloading free or dirt-cheap movies, music and software/games.
I believe this would helpful in terms of not just telling people not to visit/support pirating websites,
but to also give them other alternatives so that there wouldn't be a temptation to go there anyway
(And also for people like me that Don't want to steal, but also don't want to pay more than I have to)

That is a good question.
When I think about it Hulu does have movies.
I use Netflix.
I can use http://www.epixhd.com/ as I have Dishnetwork and can use that to be able to watch. Yup, just tested works good.
Many of the Movies channels can be watched that way.

Just because it was provided by Comcast for taking our monthly donation for high speed internet, we've had the McAfee freeware on our home pc (PC running XP sp2) since roughly the beginning of time.

Quite recently, Comcast send us an email informing us that a brand new version of the free McAfee was available for us to download once we tackled a number of "pre-install" instructions provided by links in the email that didn't work.

I should have stopped right there but I just got mad and started poking around the Comcast/McAfee site to see what all the fuss was about. After a substantial (4-5 hours) delay in getting their site to load and being unable to reach anyone in their tech support function, I was confronted with this list of programs that McAfee requires I should do without. I'm running 6 or 7 of them but found the idea that they had truly built the better mousetrap a bit arrogant.

Answer:McAfee provided FREE from Comcast: how free is free?

If your question is simply do you need McAfee, the answer is no!!!

There are plenty of free very good tools that will work just fine and they will not slow your PC down as much as McAfee.

Note however if you actually have all of the aboe items installed on your PC, that is a complete NO NO. You must only have one and only one antivirus program installed. The same is true for firewall software and for real time antispyware blocking,

Now I'd like to haggle price!
I haven't seen a word yet on pricing for Win10 except it's free for owners of Win7 or Win8 and you make the change within one year of the final release date.

Now for the fine print..............
I own two copies of Win7 Pro. I have a retail product key for each.
Basic logic tells me that I will either use the same product keys to register my new copies of Win10 when the final hits the floor. .... or I will be required to surrender the Win7 keys to receive new Win10 keys?

Now, I install the final releases of Win10, my Win7 keys are gone, and my new installs will be supported for the life of the devices.

My devices are old Win7 machines. Life expectancy? Already several years old? Not forever for sure!

Now, for instance, 13 months after Win10 final is released my 64bit version of Win10 won't boot. Dead motherboard!
Woe is me! Alas! What to do???
MS said for the life of the device! The device is dead! The machine has to be replaced! So, I have no machine, no operating system, and no retail Product Key!

I think this is where I pay for the "free" upgrade to Win10?

If my understanding of this current situation is correct I'm swapping retail keys for keys essentially the same as current OEM keys.
The machine and OS live and die together!

Am I right?

Answer:Free leak- free peek- free fun for all

MS hasn't really gone into details of how this is going to work. When I'm ready for a new computer unless I decide to build my own, I'll buy one with the OS already installed.

Data encryption is really important especially if we have sensitive files that cannot fall into other people?s hands. We can use one of the most best yet free encryption software called TrueCrypt to encrypt our data but then if you think carefully about it, there is actually a time frame when the files are not yet protected and are stored as normal files on your hard drive. Even after moving the files to an encrypted container or simply deleting them from your computer, there is a possibility that the files can actually be recovered using a simple to use free data recovery software if they are not being overwritten.

There are some dedicated tools to permanently wipe or shred the files to prevent from being recovered. However if you?ve removed the files using the standard Windows delete command and emptied the Recycle Bin, Windows does not offer a way to restore it back unless you use a recovery software to restore the file, and then use the file wiping software to permanently delete it. Overtime, the amount of accumulated recoverable files on your computer can be quite shocking. A good way around this is to use some free utilities that is able to make the recoverable files unrecoverable without touching your existing files.

More information at Windows 10 Creators Update Bloatware Free Edition

So I used the MSMG Toolkit (thanks to Mr. Fox) and I removed the following from the ISO:

Removed Telemetry
Removed Cortana
Removed System Restore (never worked for me when I needed it anyway so I just rely on creating system images myself using Macrium Reflect)
Removed all Windows Store Apps with the exception of Xbox and OneDrive
Removed Windows Store App Associations
Removed Microsoft Edge
Removed Internet Explorer
Removed Home Group (who needs that, it never works well, I just manually share the folders that I want on the network by right clicking on them and choosing share from the properties)
Removed Windows Defender
Integrated .NET Framework 3.5

As of now, there are three ways to get a genuine copy of Windows 7 for free:

1) Download through the MSDN Academic Alliance (MSNDAA) if you are currently enrolled in University or College and in an engineering and science program. It differs for different school so therefore you should check at this page – http://www.msdnaa.net/search/schoolsearch.aspx to see if your school is enrolled in this program. Well, if you are a student from different faculty then you should start making friends with science and engineering people. I am not sure what the licences restrictions for MSDNAA copy of Windows 7 are so you should read the fine prints.

2) IEEE Student Membership – You can choose to join the IEEE membership as a student for about $32 a year and you get access to MSDNAA above and receive two copies of Windows 7 for free and other Microsoft software. You can find the IEEE membership page here – http://www.ieee.org/web/membership/j....mc_id=tu_join

Please note that if you choose to take this route, it may take up to 8 days before you get the access to MSNDAA. You can see a very long and detailed discussion at this site:

http://m.slickdeals.net/forums/showt...id=0&t=1505729

3) ACM Membership – Again, you will get MSNDAA access if you join the ACM. (Association for Computing Machinery) The annual student membership cost is $19 and the membership forms can be found here – http://campus.acm.org/public/quickjoin/interim.cfm

Wow, this was utter fail dude. Stop with the spamming of your website.

2 of your 3 methods are not free, and the first one that actually is free is limited to people that probably already know they have access through their schools computer sci department...so your title of 3 methods that are free is a bit misleading.

Hi, all!

With interest I have read the Emsisoft Blog article about free anti-virus vendors that bundle PUPs with them. Here, 7 out of 8 tested free antivirus suites bundle with PUPs. A bit further down the article, an important fact is stated, and I quote:

...Bitdefender Free is one of the only clean antivirus vendors that does not come with any PUPs.

I therefore would like to know: Which more free anti-virus suites than Bitdefender Free do not bundle PUPs?

Thank you very much in advance!

Regards,
midimusicman79

Answer:Most free anti-virus suites now bundle PUPs except Bitdefender Free?

Well, Emsisoft Anti-Malware offers a 30 days trial of their program and doesn't bundle PUPs. Emsisoft doesn't bundle any PUPs at all in fact.

I am currently running:Avast! Free EditionWindows DefenderMalwarebytes Anti-Malware (free edition)Windows FirewallI don't like Windows Defender. I want to replace it with another, free, reliable anti-spyware program. What should I use? SOMETHING THAT IS CONFLICT-FREE WITH AVAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And overall, do i have good protection? EDIT: Apparently, Avast! auto-updates every 240 minutes, by default. I thought it updated immediately when there were new virus definitions? Can I set it so that it updates like this?

Answer:Best FREE anti-spyware program? (must be conflict-free with avast! home)

1) You cannot set an av to update when there are new definitions - how would it know? 2) I don't care for Windows Defender either and I always disable it on all of my systems. You're fine without it. The only thing I would add to what you already use is SpywareBlaster free edition. It does NOT run resident and you need to remember to update it about once a week. It blocks known malicious web sites. Other than that you should be fine.

Hi all!

What do you think I should use as a second opinion scanner?

Until now I use ESET + MBAM. I never used EMSISOFT but I always hear good things about it

Answer:EMSISOFT Anti-Malware free or MBAM Free as a second opinion scanner

Why not both using MBAM and Emsisoft Emergency Kit? On demand scanners should help you to track down potential infections as possible with various tools available.

Emsisoft AM is a full blown AV but it can be experimental on other security products as combination just use at your own risk as possible.

If you are running desktop OS on your tablet, no. Sims Free Play appears to be mobile OS only... iOS and Android.
You can only install Desktop software in a Desktop environment.
?One alternative is to install an Android emulator like BlueStacks, but it may lag and cause other performance issues due to limited tablet hardware.

I know that Windows comes with a firewall, which I have never really done anything with.I recently found this overview of firewalls on ZoneAlarms site:http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/firewall/good-firewall.htmThey clearly know there stuff, so I am thinking about getting their free firewall. This page says that ?Some firewalls don?t have what?s called ?outbound protection?. That means they can?t control information that leaves your computer.?I heard that if you are using free anti-virus software, that it is better to use the free Zonealarm firewall then the Windows firewall. Is this because the Windows firewall dosen?t have ?outbound protection??Is it because the Zonealarm firewall is more configurable or user friendly?

Answer:Free firewall for free antivirus and outbound protection?

The firewall in XP does not provide outbound protection. Having said that, I've never used a 3rd party firewall on any system, regardless of the OS. But hey, that's me.

Free antivirus applications aren?t what they used to be. Free antivirus companies are now bundling adware, spyware, toolbars, and other junk to make a quick buck.

At one point, free antivirus was just advertising, pushing users to upgrade to the paid products. Now, free antivirus companies are making money through advertising, tracking, and junkware installations.

How They?re Making Money Off Your PC
Changing Your Default Search Engine: Antivirus companies attempt to change your browser?s search engine to one of their own choosing. They then make money when you click ads on these search results pages. This may sometimes be branded something like ?secure search,? but you?re actually just using an inferior search engine that makes the company money.
Changing Your Homepage: Antivirus companies also want to change your homepage, driving traffic to websites that make money by advertising to you.
Ask Toolbars and Rebranded Ask Toolbars: Many programs want to install the terrible Ask toolbar. Some companies use a rebranded version of the Ask Toolbar with their own name on it, but one that is still the Ask toolbar.
Junkware: Antivirus companies add additional programs (or ?offers?) to their installers that are automatically installed by default. They?re paid by the program?s creator if they can install the program on your system ? as much as a few bucks per install.
Tracking: Antivirus companies track your browsing habits and other personal details about you... Read more

Have been happily using Avast anti-virus for some time now but today I was advised that my 'subscription has expired' and that I need to renew. Unfortunately it would seem free protection is no longer available as when I click on the 'Renew now' button I'm directed to Avast site to renew for 39.99 (after 10 'loyalty' discount). Redownloading the free version gives me a message 'there was an error changing the product configuration' when I try to install it.
Can anyone advise if this is in fact the case (ie that I'm not doing anything incredibly stupid)? If it's not longer free, what do people currently recommend for free protection?

Since I'm currently unable to use Avast due to a conflict with Comodo Firewall BSODing my PC I'm looking to switch AV's. I generally have issues with most free AVs but if I had to choose two to replace Avast it would be either Bitdefender or AVG, so I'm here asking y'all to decide for me. Feel free to choose something completely different than either of the two I've listed and give your reasons why you recommend it.
I will be pairing whatever AV is chosen with Comodo Firewall which is there to catch any zero-days the AV misses.

Here's a very short, condensed list of issues I have with the free AVs before you cast your vote:

Avast - BSOD on shutdown/restart (CF conflict )
AVG - Forced AVG Zen, Dislike their privacy policy
Avira - Ugly, outdated UI, full scan gets stuck in a loop, automatic quick scan on malware detection, Forced Avira Launcher
Bitdefender - No settings to fiddle with
Comodo Cloud - Poor detection, pointless when running CF
Fortinet - No PUP detection
Microsoft Security Essentials - Poor detection
Panda - Bug makes UI disappear
Qihoo - False positives and nag heavy (As far as I can tell their HIPS doesn't discriminate between good and bad programs)
Sophos Home - No quarantine (Automatic deletion of files )
Tencent - Considered a PUP, installs a bunch of other junk with its install

Answer:Bitdefender Free vs AVG Free (Other Suggestions Welcome) to run with Comodo Firewall?

Many AV are pointless if you have CFW with cs settings, but MSE i think could be less conflict to CFW. But those 2 you mentioned i prefer Bitdefender, even thou less customising, but what do you customise if CFW catch all or sandboxed and the erased. BD autopilot, set it up and forget.

Hi,
Scanners (Treesize, scn2 and spacemonger) show I'm using 513 Gb of my 1 Tb drive but Explorer and xplorer2 say I've only got 46Gb free.
Spacemonger shows a big piece of disk space that isn't scanned.

At one point, free antivirus was just advertising, pushing users to upgrade to the paid products. Now, free antivirus companies are making money through advertising, tracking, and junkware installations.

What Antivirus Should You Use?
Even the better antivirus solutions here may be obnoxious. Rather than pushing junkware on you at install-time, they may regularly pop up warnings and other messages, encouraging you to install other software or pay for services. They may be harvesting and selling browsing data and other information, too.

Some antivirus products are legitimately free. Microsoft?s Windows Defender comes with Windows 8, 8.1, and 10. It?s also available as Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7. This is a free antivirus product that?s essentially paid for with Windows licensing fees.

BitDefender?s product is currently solid, offering no junk. avast! isn?t perfect and does want you to install additional software, although it is high-quality software. AVG has been full of obnoxious junk on the past but seemed okay when we tried it ? we?re not sure what?s going on there, and we?d advise avast! over AVG if you want a free antivirus like these ones.

Paid antivirus are also good options. Kaspersky and BitDefender consistently get better ratings than popular free antivirus applicati... Read more

Answer:Securalive free vs 360 Total Security vs Panda Free

360 Total Security Essentials is all that is needed. With Avira and Bitdefender engines enabled, RAM usage is high... but only when interface is open or scanning. It will only be a real problem if user always has interface open.

Protection far outweighs the RAM usage. Plus, 360 Essentials is very user friendly.

What are the major differences between AVG Free Antivirus and Avast Free Antivirus in 2018?

Answer:2018: What are the Major differences between AVG Free and Avast Free?

There will be more available in Avast Free as as far as I am aware, I believe the difference is in the protection components. Avast incorporated some of the code-base from AVG after they acquired the company into Avast software regarding static and dynamic but I doubt the products are identical in terms of what is available now. I'd imagine they acquired AVG to give "Avast" branded software a boost, and kept the AVG company up and running to generate more income from all the existing AVG customers.

This is speculation though, I can't say for sure.

I have always used Avast and Comodo as my AV/Firewall combination. I find it to be very useful, and although Comodo provides many annoying popups, they are useful and informational (I would consider myself a competent computer user, though no expert).

Recently, I just wanted to see how good my combination was and if there was a better one. I found topics that said of how Avast's web shield completely bypasssed Comodo's rules. I tested this:

1) Block chrome.exe in Comodo completely
2) Check that both Comodo and Avast are updated, and Avast web shield ON
3) Open Chrome and see what happens

Results: At first I thought it was fine, google.com was blocked. Then I tried clicking on bookmarks. yahoo.com would open, youtube.com would open, etc. I was shocked to find that Comodo was letting these websites open even though chrome.exe was blocked!

After doing some more research, and realizing that this was a big problem, and that many solutions did not work, with avast being blamed or comodo being outdated, or even that Win 7 64 bit was limiting comodo, I tested it again with web shield OFF.

I repeated the process of blocking chrome and opened google.com and other websites. This time all the websites were blocked!

Is there a solution where I can keep web shield on and have comodo be effective in blocking? Or do I need a new firewall?

Microsoft is forcing everybody to rethink the operating system that everybody loves to hate with Windows 8, and that includes security suite makers. Freeware faves AVG leap into the future today with a touch-friendly interface, a zippy installation, and impressively fast scans.
The upgrades are available at no cost as AVG Anti-Virus Free 2013 (download), or as a paid update to AVG Anti-Virus 2013 (download) and AVG Internet Security 2013 (download), exclusively from Download.com today.
Security vendor claims about being faster, or better, or able to protect your computer while doing your dishes, are perennial boasts. At least in the case of AVG 2013, CNET Labs has verified the company's talk about the 2013's performance gains. For our usual battery of tests, we found that AVG Anti-Virus Free 2013 actually bested an unprotected computer during the MS Office test. AVG Free completed the MS Office test in 354 seconds, while the unprotected computer took 395 seconds.
When I asked AVG evangelist Tony Anscombe about that, he explained that it has to do with how AVG 2013 performs its scans. "The new Turbo Scan checks files in the order that they're saved to the disk, as opposed to how they're saved in the file directory," he said during an interview at CNET's San Francisco offices in August.
AVG's internal benchmarks clocked "scan times up to 23.95 percent faster," Anscombe said. Meanwhile, CNET Labs' scan time results found... Read more

Microsoft Windows 10 free upgrade: five questions answered | Technology | The Guardian
"I read somewhere that the free upgrade to Windows 10 will expire after one year and that the user will then have to pay for the upgrade. Is this so? AlasdairNo, that?s completely wrong. Once you have installed Windows 10 and made a note of your product key, it?s yours forever. Well, you can use it until Microsoftstops supporting it, which is usually 10 years."

Yeah once you get windows 10 it is yours for the life of the product. The only time its not free is if you want to upgrade after the year is up if you have not upgraded before hand.

Hi there

Why can't people be more honest on their websites -- as well as making it harder and harder to find REAL downloads without confusing extra offers / links to other programs with the real link buried deep down in an easy to miss website - I really hate the following that seems to be commonplace now -- FREE DOWNLOAD which implies FREE -- but the SOFTWARE most certainly Isn't but totally no mention of BUY / PAY on the site.

We should BOYCOTT those sites and make our feelings known --nothing wrong about people wanting to make a few bucks - especially these days with good jobs getting harder to find -but we can still be OPEN.

Cheers

I've just bought the A100-906 notebook with Windows XP Home. As I understand I can upgrade it to Windows Vista. And, as I understand, for free.

But then I visit Microsoft Upgrade site I've seen an item price 95,47USD without shipping and handling for Vindows Vista Home Premium.

Am I have to pay it or I just have to make an Order, send it to [email protected] and Toshiba will pay it?

In sort, I mean is this upgrade is free or Toshiba just gives a discount?

Answer:Moduslink Vista upgrade is Free or not Free?

Hej,

you are in the same situation like I was.

1.: Updates are only free from XP PRO to Vista Business or from XP MCE to Vista Home Premium.
2.: Updates from XP Home cost. Even from XP Home to Vista Home Basic you have to pay a lot.

I ordered like you want to do Vista Home Premium for 98,xx ?. Right now I am glad that I could cancel this order. I really advice you not to order via Moduslink. The company was just founded for the upgrade. You can hardly reach them via email. The only thing that works is letter or fax.

And in the end: You just get an upgrade! So I kindly advice you not to order there. Instead of this, order in your favourite online shop a Windows Vista Home Premium SystemBuilder / OEM product. I ordered as well for 99,- ? so it is not even one Euro more then the upgrade. You get a full version and I had it in one day. On ModusLink I waited for over 6 weeks and nothing happenend.

Hi,we need to know which antivirus program does the most complete job for virus protection and removal--Avast free home,or ,Avg free.We know Avast adds 4 more programs to "task manager" than Avg does,so does that represent Avast doing a more complete job?
Thanks for any information

Answer:Avast free or Avg free--which is the most complete program?

They both detect viruses well, but in my opinion, and others also, Avast seems to be better at removing them. Select the custom installation option and you have the option of leaving out any of the four sub-programs. For instance, since I don't have Outlook, I didn't install the Outlook virus scanner module so I wouldn't waste storage and computer resources for something I didn't need.

I had been using File History, but then for some reason it no longer backs up my folders. Besides, it seems I cannot set it up to backup only selected folders. The only choice I seem to have is to backup all HD.
I need to be able to
1. have a 2nd (and maybe a 3rd) copy of photos/videos and personal files in external HDs.
2. Once I copy new photos from source to PC, Backup software should be able to identify what's new and copy it to backup locations.
3. In the event when duplicates exist, Backup software should be able to suggest/request removal of them.

Any suggestions to other features are more than welcome, even if it's just to make better use of File History.

Thanks in advance guys!

Answer:Can one suggest an excellent free/nearly free BackUp app

Sorry I don't know much about free as over the years I have found that free is not always free and recovering your data when something bad happens. And It will happen. It just isn't worth taking a chance on free.
I use and still use Acronis True Home Image. I'll continue using this program on BIOS/MBR computers.
When we started using newer machines that are UEFI/GPT Acronis did not step up to the plate for several years 2011 through 2014 they advertised that they were UEFI complaint. While at the same time they were not able to restore a working OS Booting Hard Drive. This was a nightmare to a lot of us. I understand that in April 2014 they came out with an update that did make ATHI 2014 actually work. I can't say for sure as by this time I had found Macrium Reflect which is a very good back up program/ Imaging program that actually Clones or Images UEFI GPT machines and 100% restores booting OS hard drives/SSD. The main reason that I'll be moving everything over to Reflect is One it works, two there tech support is English speaking highly experienced people that actualy work directly with the product.
The free addition will work good for disk Images and for Cloning. If you want to use file and folder backup you'll have to pay for a license. I personally caught a 30% off sale and got a Pro License. As I upgrade the other Work Stations and Notebooks they will only need the standard License.
So I recommend Macrium Reflect, however Acronis may be better for your requirements. ... Read more

After eliminating other free products (Avast, too many false-positives and nags; AVG, poor detection and lousy performance; Avira, nags; Qihoo, way too many false-positives), I'm down to two.

Bitdefender stepped up its free product but Panda is still touting their performance from 2 years ago and fell off the testing lab reports.

How do the two compare in regards to:

Detection rates
Low-performance impact
Reasonable false-positives, should be rare
NO nags. Zero. Nada. None. Zilch.
NO forcing browser changes (search engines, homepages) or toolbars
Gaming compatibility
Additional attack surface coverage

This is for my (and wife's) Windows 10 machines. I'm looking for the lesser overhead/hassle product for the desktops, laptop, and Surface and the better mitigator for the sheep-dip virtual machine.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Answer:Bitdefender Free vs. Panda Free (2017)

I'd recommend Bitdefender free, this is coming from the blocking side of things. Bitdefender seems to be more lenient in terms of blocking IP's and sites so connections to servers and such should be better and non intrusive.

I currently use ZA Free 7.0.302, but due to the size of it (since the Pro stuff is just turned off) and it possibly acting weird, I was going to use ZA Free 6.5.737 on my replacement laptop coming up instead. Then Comodo Free FirewallVersion 2.4 was recommended to me. But then I saw that it supposedly has a vulnerability that won't be fixed until the next version (if that even).I also see that it says "after downloading and installing the firewall, just register with us and you will be sent a free license. After activation, this license will never expire." -- so what information do you have to provide to register? This firewall stuff kind of makes my head spin since I'm no expert, but I'm trying to decide what I should go with between these two on my replacement laptop. Opinions with explanations understandable by a non-expert are appreciated! I am also considering buying the AVG Internet Security, which seems to include a Firewall. How does that one measure up? I'll have Windows XP Pro, I use Firefox for all internet browsing (except for Windows Updates and the occasional Office Updates), and I have dial-up. Some A/V, antispyware, etc. programs I plan on using are: SpyBot, Ad-Aware SE Free, AVG A/V Free, AVG Antispyware Free, and maybe Comodo BOClean Anti-Malware Version 4.24 and SpywareBlaster. Thanks for the help/opinions!

Answer:Comodo Free Firewallversion 2.4 Vs. Zonealarm Free 6.5.737

The only thing you have to provide is your email address. If you don't want any offers from Comodo, make sure the the box underneath is ticked. I think it says something along the lines of tick this box if you do not want to receive any other offers from Comodo. The programs you have mentioned will create no problems as i can see, although you should ensure that the WIndows default fire is turned off when using another firewall. To turn off Windows Firewall, click start>run and type in firewall.cpl then click OK. Click on the circle next to Off(not recommended) then OK.Don't worry, using any firewall other the Windows one is preferable, as Windows only protects you from incoming threats, not outgoing threats!About the vulnerability, there will always be one, no matter what firewall you use, as hijackers and other computer bad guys come up with new tactics....but Comodo has worked fine for me and has even alerted me to the fact i have IRCbot (a backdoor trojan/worm)!!!But about which firewall is better, i don't know. I can't say so because i haven't used the AVG firewall. Although i would expect Comodo to be better, based on the fact that AVG is mainly an anti-virus program, and would therefore concentrate on the virus side of things. That is exactly why i do not use the Trend Micro firewall i have.I love Mozilla add-ons, they make me feel safe.......try the add-on found here that heps protect you against keyloggers which basically see what you type and can s... i am cloning ext2/3 partition with norton ghost but i ahve to used the clone all raw data mode otherwise norton ghost will only produce a 5mb file wheras in actual fact linux install using 4gb at the moment

how do i write zeros to all parts of the remaining partitions free space - i will need an app for windows also .

Answer:free software to write zero to all free space

You are lucky that this site doesn't charge by the question. At least you are starting to put them in the right subforums though...I'll give you credit for that. Why would you need to zero out a drive that is still in use? Since you mentioned Ghost, you may have a program called gdisk. I run that from a bootable USB flash drive if I need to zero out an entire drive. It should do just partitions, but there'd be no need to do so on a drive that's still in use.

At present my Dad is running XP on a very old computer and uses AVG Free and ZoneAlarm Free. He is about to purchase a new computer which runs Windows 7 and he was wondering whether ZoneAlarm Free and AVG Free work with Win7?

Answer:Does Windows 7 work with ZoneAlarm Free & AVG Free

You'll need to get Win 7 versions of the programmes, also free. However in Win 7 most people seem to find the Windows firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials are adequate.I have been running ZA and AVG free versions for years, but have not yet installed them with the new o/s.Haven't made my mind up finally, but the Windows firewall and MSE should keep your Dad safe until, like me, he makes his mind up!

What is a good free Anti-Virus program to replace the now dead (Internal Virus Database is out-of-date) AVG Free 7.5.557 version 270.12.11/2089? The AVG icon in my task tray is black and gray.AVG Free 8.5 will not work on Windows ME! It must be an Anti-Virus program that will operate on Windows ME. I can not afford to buy a new computer. This computer does not have enough memory to upgrade the operating system, we already tried that for other reasons.

Answer:Need good free AV to replace AVG Free 7.5.557 on Windows ME

HI, you can get AntiVir Personal Edition or avast! Home Edition to replace AVG

Hi there,

I have been using "MalwareBytes" for several years and it's a really great AV/Anti-Spyware program. It does a great job in detecting both anti-virus and spywares.

You can download the program here = https://www.malwarebytes.com/

I noticed that the Avast free i have is 154 mb and on the MG download site it shows 47.8 mb. Did I download a bunch of stuff I don't need? Also not sure if I need the Zone Alarm toolbar. Thanks in advance for you responses!

Answer:Avast free and Zone Alarm free

Often we have versions here at Majorgeeks that are not so easy to find on the makers sites. The makers like you to download versions that offer a trial of the full versions or full suites. The ZA toolbar is a renamed version of the Ask toolbar, I consider it crapware but it probably helps pay for the freeware we all like; decline to install it anyway or uninstall it if it gets in via the backdoor.

Beware, there are also malware sites out there pretending to offer the real thing, too! Some of them look pretty authentic.

Answer:Beware: Free Antivirus Isnt Really Free Anymore

avast! is good compared to the others, and Bitdefender plus Malwarebytes just don't offer anything. Even thought, let's keep in mind that Malwarebytes is still just an Antimalware and not an Antivirus. Still nice to see it mentionned in an article like this to show that it doesn't put itself on the same level as the other security software.

I have a client that for some reason AVG will not update except manually going to the grisoft site and downloading the update. I have tried every thing including installing from a CD, Installing from the Grisoft website, updating manually, and for some reason the AVG update manager will not work. Can someone recommend another Free Antivirus that is as easy to use and as automatic as AVG is, that I can install on her computer. This is an elderly woman that needs things as simple as possible. She can be taught to follow prompts but I would like to keep things as easy as possible. for example I send her emails regularly to remind her to run Adaware and Spybot, Any suggestions?

I gave up Zone Alarm Free because I had problems installing latest version, and on recommendation from another member replaced it with Comodo. However Comodo seems incapable or remembering permanent instructions, so I am frequently having to tell it to allow my web browser amongst other programs to connect to Internet. That there may be work rounds, I do not doubt, but I require a program, that works quietly and efficiently without problem. Can anyone recommend a good free firewall that meets my requirements and is not bloated, please?

Both designs to work together with existing antivirus, and adding additional layer of protection. But which one is good when it come to free and pro version?

Answer:Reasoncore Security Free/Pro vs Malwarebytes Free/Pro

The protection capabilities of Reason Core Security way back when tested by some members is premature but of course as development goes it should provide convincing results.

MBAM and Reason Core are good to be your on demand scanners in such way.

Hello Forum!

This is my first post here and I hope I get it right.
Practically I want them to tell me their opinions on which is better between "Panda free antivirus and ad-adware free antivirus"

The so short djeo to be understood and be easy to answer

A Salu2! from Argentina!

Answer:What is better Panda free antivirus or ad-aware free?

Hello and welcome to malwaretips,
I think adaware got a better detection, but i would trust more Panda.
Both don't have proactive protection, and web filter are almost the same.
Adaware do more false positive than Panda (thanks bitdefender engine).
If you can use other antivirus than panda or adaware you should do it.
