Preferred Solution: how to get a program off hard drive to install again

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: how to get a program off hard drive to install again

Read the license agreement you OK'd when you installed it, I am pretty sure that you are not allowed to reinstall it on a different system. If you install it without activating it, it is a trial version and I believe it will work for something like 30 days and bug you periodically to activate it.You can download and install free of any charge Openoffice.org for any system (Windows, Mac, and Linux). It can open MS Office formats as well as many others. You can set it to save in MS Office formats by default so everything is more portable. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I had a bad hard drive that I had to uninstall from my computer recently. (D: drive) Unfortunately, I had Nvidia GeForce experience on there. I tried installing it again on my C: drive but for some reason it won't let me install it at all.
Instead I get the error: "The System cannot find the file specified"
I had GeForce experience on my D: drive up and running before I had the hard drive failure so my guess is it's trying to either update or access that file which is on my old drive.

I also noticed in my C: drive, I do have the GeForce experience and other display driver files there, but they will not run when I try accessing them.

Is there anything I can do to make Windows access these or a way to point the newly downloaded GeForce program to install in my C: drive?

Thanks!

Answer:Removed 2nd hard drive now program install issue

Did you try uninstalling from Programs and Features? Then run a CCleaner scan/registry. And try again.

My T410i hard drive died, I have Windows 7 Home Basic OA key, but how to install on new hard drive? I had to replace the hard drive, I realise from the help pages I should have written down the error messages before replacing... Either way I am unsure how to obtain the Windows 7 Home Basic software to re-install.I have the key, where should I go - the microsoft site says it came pre-installed so I need to contact the supplier - Lenovo, but on the product list T410i is too old and not listed. Thanks in advance for you time.CheersPaul

I have a customer's Satellite L305D S5895 laptop. This was shipped to me by the customer who tried to install Windows XP Pro, Vista and none would install. He said he tried all installation CDs he had and finally gave up on it and shipped it to me.

When I got it the partition were deleted so I tried to install Win 7 and when I do doing a custom install I get an error saying the hard drive can't be formatted on disk 0 or it will give an error that no hard drives were found.

I reset the bios to default and no matter what I do it won't format or find the harddrive. I was going to upgrade the bios but the only way I found to upgrade the bios is after windows is installed. There is no way to make changes to the bios for settings that would have to do with the hard drive. This has a Toshiba MK2546GSX (S1) hard drive.

When installing Win 7 I get the normal windows, "windows is starting", "Select Language", "Select System", "Type of install", "Custom Install", "Delete partitions", "New Partitions", "Format", then the error message "Windows cannot format a partition on disk 0. Error: 0x80070057"

This happens regardless what system I try to install. I've tried two different versions of XP, one of Vista and 3 Win 7 and each time a different install CD.

Like a bafoon, I think I may have tapped or banged on my mouse pad too hard on the laptop and damaged the hard drive. Laptop comes on, and you see the "Lenovo" trademark flash real quick like normal, but instead of going to my baground with the "sign in" slot with password, it just stays black. You can see the screen is lit up but it just stays black, but will not start up (Windows). My recovery button won't even work and I can't retrieve files and just want to start over with new hard drive. So, when installing new hard drive with nothing on it or empty hard drive (no windows, no files, no operating system, a hard drive fresh out of the box) what operating system DVD's do I need to get computer up and running again? This was a Lenovo N586 Windows 7, 64 bit laptop, scratch and dent buy, so I did not get the operating system DVD's when it came from Lenovo.

Galilee Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about wanting to restore your PC and wanted to help -- but need more information. Your PC did not come with Win10 preinstalled, so if you were to order HP Recovery Media and use that, it would restore the original operating system, drivers, and HP utilities.  I presume this is NOT what you want, right? So, while you can make Win10 media to recover your PC, it would be a clean-install and nothing would be preserved. You can make such media using this tool: Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help Note that when you go do download and build install media, the tool defaults to matching what is already installed on your PC (as in, Home for Home, 64-bit for 64-bit).  While you CAN change these settings, do NOT. If you do, the resulting media will be different and will force you to enter a NEW product code! Good Luck

I have a program on an older computer that I no longer have the install cd for anymore, but I would like to transfer that program to my new computer. Is there a program or some other method that will allow me to achieve my goal.

Answer:How can a transfer a program from one hard disk to another w/o install cd

I just saw a program yesterday that would do what you ask. I'll see if I can find it.
You can take the old hard drive, put it in the other PC as a Slave and the program will run off the old drive. I've got a few things working that way. No problems with it. Even an old 98SE drive into a 2000Pro computer and my son's games work just great from the 98 disc.
I'll look around for that program for you. Maybe someone else already has the answer.

Hi
I have looked through solutions for this issue, but the suggestions don't seem to fix my issue...

I am running Windows 7 SP1 Pro 64-bit on a Dell Optiplex 760, and try to do a clean install of Windows 10, using the ISO file which I downloaded from Microsoft & burnt on to a DVD, and instructions from the tutorial on here, which are very good. I downloaded the correct 64-bit version.

I boot from the DVD, enter my region (UK), and choose custom install, and then my hard drive does not show up on the list of where you would like to install. I have all my USB's unplugged (except keyboard/mouse).

I tried deleting my partions using MiniTool Partition Wizard (bootable DVD), so that the entire disk is unallocated. That didn't fix it. I also tried creating a new partition (NTFS) of the entire drive (to get one Primary NTFS partition). That didn't work. I also tried setting that partition as 'active'. The same.

Before formatting etc, I tried a boot from the Windows 7 install DVD, and the hard drive does show up, unlike the Windows 10 DVD.

Do you think it's an issue with the Windows 10 installer?

I downloaded another version of Win10 from the MS Tech Bench page, but same issue.

After formatting etc, during the Windows 10 boot, I tried another suggestion to open up Command Prompt (Shift + F10), and ran 'diskpart' - and no drives are found. I checked the Bios, and it was there.

So presumably that is the issue. If i ran 'diskpart' with my prior Windows 7 install, diskpart sh... Read more

Answer:Windows 10 clean install - hard drive doesn't show up before install

Welcome toTenforums, Simon.

I am a little concerned that the Windows 10 setup program on DVD does not have drivers to properly see and interrogate the system on your PC so that the hard drive is visible. It's the second similar case on this forum that I've seen recently. You also seem to be trying to clean install on an empty PC - is this correct, because if you do so It will not activate.

Solved Can't install. possible partition error - Windows 10 Forums

After much to-ing and fro-ing, it was finally possible to *copy the Sources folder from the setup ISO file onto a partition on the hard drive, and run the setup from there, where it wasn't possible to boot from the DVD, even though it worked elsewhere.

If you still have Windows 7 installed (and you should do for Windows 10 activation purposes - if just to obtain a genuine ticket for digital entitlement), and you have the ISO download available, the solution is fairly simple. If you haven't you will need the Windows 7 key to activate the install.

You seem pretty PC savvy so, I'd ask you to follow the bolded instructions from the * in the 5th para above.

I have a Latitude E6420 running Windows 7. I installed a larger hard drive today and put the original (working) drive in an external USB enclosure. I wanted a clean install of Windows 7 on the new drive so rather than use a drive migration utility I used the Dell Operating System Reinstallation DVD. When it was done I discovered that it didn't install any drivers. The network drivers aren't installed, so I can't download the drivers from the internet, and I don't have the Dell Driver Reinstallation CD.
1) Is there a way to use the Recovery Partition on the old drive (now in the external enclosure) to do a factory fresh install on the new drive?
or (maybe even better)
2) Is there somewhere I can download an .iso file for the second E6420 recovery disk (containing Drivers/Factory-installed Apps?)
or (least desirable)
3) What drivers would I need to download (on another computer) and manually transfer/install to the E6420 via an external USB drive so I can connect over Wifi to download the rest of the drivers directly onto the E6420?
Thanks for your help!

Answer:Latitude E6420 easiest driver install method after fresh Win 7 install on new hard drive?

Dear jedijunk, Recovery option works only when old hdd it is in laptop. You do not have readily available .iso file with factory installed drivers. Drivers for Latitude E6420 available in dell support site, download them in another computer, then copy to new hdd, then perform installation.
But the easiest & simple method is to fix the old hdd in laptop, use Hiren Boot CD or any other Disk Image Utility, copy the C:\ drive (of old hdd) disk image in another partition of old hdd, then remove old hdd & fix new hdd in laptop, use restore the disk image to new hdd. Hope this info helps you.

I've had this problem now for a while, the hard drive light is constantly flashing and you can hear the drive doing what it does, so decided to go ahead and do an upgrade.  Bought a new 2TB WD hard drive, and did a new install of Win 7 Home Edition.

Problem still exists.  I am looking at the Resource Monitor > Disk Activity and there is a lot of stuff going on.  I've captured a screen shot.  Can anyone tell me what is going on and can I stop this madness?  I left my computer running all night, woke up around 4 am, and it is just as busy as ever.

Ran malwarebytes on it today and says everything is clean.

Answer:New install, new hard drive, but hard drive never stops

Pretty much just looking like windows indexing your hard drive on a clean install. Pretty normal. SearchIndexer.exe is the windows indexing programing, that is reading the files and the data being written below that to the programdata\microsoft\search\ directories is where the indexed data is stored. This just makes it faster to search for files using the Windows search function. Leave the computer on for a couple of days and it should finish shortly.
However I have seen it where if you have a file that is corrupted for some reason it will cause the search indexer to lock on that file. If you restored old data to your drive windows will reattempt to index all of that old data, and potentially run into a problem file.
If it just drives ya nuts though you can just disable the searchindexer service by hitting Start, typing services.msc, hit enter. Towards the bottom of the list find the service named Windows Search, double click it and change the startup type to disabled. Restart and you should see decreased disk activity, but will find that if you search for files it will be a bit slower.

I have the Pinnacle Studio Delux which I use to put still photos with transitions and music and burn to DVD or vhs tapes. In Pinnacle booklet, it says it will work better if it is on it's own hard drive, so I had someone install a second hard drive for me, but it does not work.
1. I cannot download program to this second hard drive (no programs), the only thing I have been able to use this second hard drive for is for storage (photos/documents, etc.). I am think ing this second hard drive has something missing, is the second hard drive suppose to have it's own operating system?
2, I install the Pinnacle to the master hard drive and it is now not working correctly there either, it runs real slow and when you go to render the video, it keeps crashing. The program worked fine before I installed a secondary hard drive, it was a little slow but it worked fine, now I cannot get this to work correctly at all. I had the person who put the second hard drive in come to check it, but they said it is not the computer, it is the program, but, my question is why did it work before and also why can't I use the second hard drive for anything but storage?
If you can solve any of these problems, it would be WONDERFUL!

Answer:hard drive program transfer

You can't! You can move files, but the registry and file assosiations need to be set on the primary system partition and also have the support files installed. The install program will install dll's and other system files in many locations so it is more than a matter of just moving them.

I am looking for a program that will:-

1. Clone my primary hard drive to a secondary hard drive which will be bootable if needed to replace the primary drive, and

2. Update the cloned drive with all subsequent changes made to the primary hard drive.

Anybody got any suggestions.

[I am running Windows XP Home SP3]

Answer:Program To Clone Hard Drive

Sounds like you are asking for RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks).

The level of RAID you are referencing is RAID1. This mirrors 2 drives so that if one fails, the other still works, and data is not lost.

Kind of expensive to implement though, you will have to judge if it is practical for your situation.

Unless of course, you don't need to make the changes constantly. If you are just looking to update daily rather than real-time then norton ghost might be all you need.

Answer:Program to check what is using my hard drive much?

You have one way already in your pc. Go into 'Task manager', then 'performance' tab, then 'resource monitor'. The 'Overview' tab tells you what is happening. It is very useful to show if you have enough RAM installed for the programs you are running.
*One idea though, do you have a defragmentation program installed, which is set to run in the background or 'smart/auto' mode ?

**If you want to try a more detailed program try; http://systemexplorer.net/download.php
Click on 'Download' tab.
(The link for the download is near the bottom of the site, just above the blue advert. 'Download installer version' is the one.)
Run it 'as administrator'. This program highlights the programs which have just been active with a coloured background, which may help you .

I tried installing Win 8, but I need to update Windows first.

Does anyone have a way I can permanently wipe the empty space through Windows or am I going to have to take out the hard drive and tell the person they have to buy a new one?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Need to wipe hard drive w/out being able to d/l a program

How about download something to another computer and then burn it to a CD or DVD disc? You mention the Thinkpad has a DVD drive, so you should be able to then copy the installer off the optical disc and then install it in Windows XP on the Thinkpad.

I dont know if this would go in gaming or not:

Ok i have my OS on one hard drive. I have another free hard drive (exact same kind as the OS is on) that i can put programs or what ever into.

As far as speed goes (least lag, load times, etc.) would it be best to put the application.... for example a game, onto the hard drive that carries the OS or into the empty hard drive?

Or would it be best to put the game onto the OS hard drive and then put the paging file into the empty hard drive (non OS)?

Answer:Running A program from Non OS Hard Drive

I personally have Windows XP on one harddrive along with a "storage" partition, then I install all my applications and games on the separate hard drive. Im sure it would load faster as it doesn't have to load OS stuff from the same hard drive. My pagefile is on the windows partition i guess. I didn't know you could change the pagefile location?

I want to change my set up so that I can run 2 windows os's 32bit & 64bit on seperate hard drives whilst using a third hdd for program files. note: I have never run a 64bit setup so I am not to sure

hdd0 - 32bit
hdd1 - 64bit
hdd2 - Music, Videos & Games and other Programs

The intention is to install the game/program on to hdd2 and be able to run it from both hdd0 and hdd1 (if the program is compatible with both that is).

Can anyone give me advice on whether this is possible and the potential complications/pitfalls that I might encounter?

I just just installed a program called Hard Disk Sentinel which had good reviews etc

Hard Disk Sentinel can monitor hard disk status, health and performance including temperature and S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, built in most hard disks today) values for each hard disks. Also it measures the hard disk transfer speed in real time which can be used as a benchmark or to detect possible hard disk failures, performance degradations.
Hard Disk Sentinel is a windows software that helps to prevent hard disk failure.
Hard Disk Sentinel can be used to prevent serious damage or data loss. It warns the user if there will be a problem occur and this gives opportunity to backup important and valuable data. Click to expand...

and it is saying that my IDE drive (what I use for my OS) is only running at 43% health which is a good reason for problems I have been having.

The thing is, like doctors on serious matters I like to get a second opinion, so can anyone recommend another program that I can use to test my hard drives

Hello all, I have just installed a hard drive monitoring program called HDD Health 2.1. Soon after I installed it an alert popped up on my screen advising that my hard drive (C) that contained my OS, programs and data had reached 46 degrees. What was worse however was that my other hard drive that only contains backups was reading 49 degrees. At the time I wasn't using that one at all, because I wasn't restoring or backing up. What is going on?

well, you could use a cron-type program to initiate a backup.

For Windows, this could be pycron (check Google) calling xcopy (in your dos window)
Not a formal software backup app, but it would do the trick.

Just read an article that suggested that a "must have" is a Hard Drive Monitoring Program. They did not tout any particular one. It was suggested that this type program is essential because it can not only provide you with the condition of your HD but also give you a "heads up" as to when your HD is in trouble and about to fail.

I was wondering if any of our group use such a program and, if so, which one, and the pros and cons relative to such a program.

Thanks,

I found this only once, when installing Adobe InDesign CS6. Photoshop CS6 installed on my internal rotating HD but Indesign refused. I assumed that was because InDesign, being a complex program, needed to go on to the C drive, which is where I had to install it.

Unfortunately, unless the actual installer for MDIS is on the flash drive you won't be able to install it. The installer sets up registry values and other files in folders like AppData along with the main MDIS folder.

Program installers will allow you to choose where exactly the installation directory should be pointed to. When that options comes up, you can change the destination including the drive letter (change "E:\Program Files\etc etc..." to "C:\Program Files\etc etc...").

By the way you aren't trying to install from, say, a virtual drive are you?

Hi,

I am trying to re-install xp pro on my Toshiba Notebook with an external DVD drive. I am able to boot from the drive and the blue "windows setup" screen begins to load.

After I press enter to set up Window XP, it says "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your comptuer...Press F3 to quit.

I am stumped. If I quit setup and I can reboot and load my original windows. Therefore, the hard disk is present and works fine.

How do I get the windows setup to see the hard drive and proceed with setup?

Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Install Windows with External Dvd Drive - Hard drive not found?

It is usually because the installation cannot recognise the SATA driver for the hard disc
If you have a usb drive load from Toshiba the sata controller drivers
so on the screen for the install you press F6 load drivers and then load the sata driver from the usb - I say usb as I presume you do not have a floppy drive
OR you can include them in a reburnt CD using nLite but that is a longer way round the problem
Nlite

http://www.nliteos.com/guide/part2.html

OR you can TRY try this

Enter your BIOS/Setup Utility
Locate the Serial ATA or SATA configuration section
I’ve seen this section called ‘On Chip Config’ on some Phoenix Award BIOS

On Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads it’s in Config > Serial ATA (Sata)
Change the mode of the SATA controller from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility
Save & Exit
Reboot and begin the Windows Setup again.
If Windows Setup successfully detects your hard disk this time then go ahead and perform the Windows Setup.
When Windows setup completes change the mode back to AHCI in the BIOS

Hi!

I have windows 8.1 and c-drive is system drive.
Programs are mainly installed to C: but I have also some programs installed to E: Program Files, Program Files (68), Program Data etc .
Now I want to to move E-drive contents to another hard drive (all files stored on e-drive).

I think the safest way is to reinstall all programs, but I don't want to do this. Also it is possible to move files to new partition which has another drive letter than e: and create link, but this I don't want to do either.

Can I do it like this:
1) Change e-drive letter to x
2) Create new e-drive to another hard drive
3) Copy e-drive contents to new e-dive
4) that is it?

Can I use normal copy - paste to copy all files?
I think register references are the same after these steps because drive letter and content of the e-drive are still the same.

Does my method work? It sound so easy to do. Is it "too easy"? Does it have any risks?

Best regards
Laakspen

Answer:Move program files to another hard drive

Yes, it should as long as the drive letter is the same and also I would move instead of copy to retain the ownership of the files.

I recently got a Solid State Drive to replace my other HDD & kept the HDD as a secondary storage drive.
Can I move the program files folders (Program files, Program files x86 & Prgram data)to the secondary drive to free up some space on the smaller SDD which has my windows installation on & Warcraft.
If I can, can I just drag & drop them?
I'm assuming I'll need to replace my desktop shortcuts as they won't follow the programs.

Answer:Move Program files to 2nd hard drive?

You will need to uninstall the programs you wish to remove from the SSD and then reinstall from the setup files to your secondary drive. Make sure you use custom install selecting the secondary drive path as your target for installation.
The reason you cannot just move the folders is that the program installations involve registry entries and by moving the folders these will be corrupted and the programs will not work.

I have a new hard drive. I was hoping to use the Ghost Symantec program to copy my old hard drive on to the new one. It appears to be more difficult than originally thought. Can anyone walk me through this please. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Installing a new hard drive using ghost program

I do not use ghost, I use acronis true image however the steps should be about the same. I am assuming these are ide drives you are using.
To clone a drive.
1 Install the new drive as either a slave on ide1 or you can put it as the master on ide2 for now. Do not partition or format the drive; just install it like it came out of the box. If there is any partition info on the drive, delete the partition in disk management before you begin.
2 Boot with your clone CD ie the ghost CD. Select source [old drive] and destination [new drive]
3 Complete the clone process
4 Shut down the system; do not reboot with both drives connected. This will cause drive letter problems.
5 Install the new drive as the master on ide1. Be sure to set the jumper to master. Pull the power connector from the old drive.
6 Power on the system and make sure it boots and drive letters are correct. If all is well, you can shutdown and connect your old drive as a slave device for storage.

Note you may use CS [cable select] instead of master / slave. One other caution. If one of your drives is a WD western digital, they have two master settings. One is master single drive and the other is master multi drive. You set the jumper to what ever you have ie one drive on the ide channel or two drives on the ide channel. If your disks are not WD, disregard the above.

That is assuming that you anti-virus application has such a facility, not all do.There is a lot of stuff that goes on drive C: that really doesn't have to. Its just a matter on knowing which. The simplest solution is not to install you anti-virus on drive C: in the first place.Without knowing the size of your hard drive, the information is only relevant to yourself. I have 20 Gbs free on drive C:. Well, I FINALLY have an extra hard drive exclusively for the purposes of backing up my main hard drive. I want a program that will make an image of my entire C: drive (windows XP 64 bit) and dump that on my G: drive automatically, every night. Are there any good, simple, and hopefully free programs that will do that? I want the image to be in some kind of standard format (iso?)so I'm not locked into one kind of software if I have to restore...

Answer:Good hard drive backup program?

Acronis True Image.

Imaging software doesn't make "ISOs" unfortunately, that's not how they work. They all use proprietary image formats for themselves, but you typically get some way of making a bootable recovery CD as well. True Image allows "live imaging" meaning you can back up/image your system without needing to shut down - although a restore operation (if required) will.

There are several different apps out (True Image, Ghost, DriveImage XML, etc) but, for the feature set, ease of use, stability, and general reviews, nothing beats True Image.

Hi,

Getting a new and larger hard drive, to replace existing C: Drive where my main operating Win XP (SP2) is located.

Could just rebuild, but as system is working fine (just a lack of drive space.) a pal suggested:

Temporarily take out my existing slave drive as it won't affect anything else as it contains non essential programmes.

Load the new hard drive as a slave. Then using a "Drive Image Programme" copy my existing C: Drive to the new slave.

Then replace the existing C: Drive with the new one. Obviously changing the jumpers to Master. Then put back in my old slave.

If you think this would work and be relatively simple can anyone reccomend a good, uncomplicated, simple Drive Image Programme to use. Freeware would be good but suspect i may have to buy.

Thanks

I need a program that would easily wipe the C drive but leave the recovery partition alone.

any ideas what to use? need something free and easy.

Ive also read that starting with windows Vista, a format does a basic hard drive wipe. so is this basic wiping of the drive enough for the home user?

Just wondering what others use. thanks.

I have a Dell XP that must be old because I am. Anyway I ordered it with two hard drives, both 30Gig. Both are full. Who knew back six or seven years ago that 30-gigs was (were?) not enough?

I have tried to keep C:/ for programs and D:/ for files. I would like to get an external HDD and move programs onto it in order to free up space on C:/

What kinds of problems will I run into? Will the registry be able to keep up or tag along or edit itself or...? Is it even doable? Will it give me nightmares?

Thanx!

Answer:Move program files to new hard drive

There is no real simple way to do that. the only way I know of is to uninstall the programs one by one and reinstall them point at the external drive instead of the C:\ Drive. the best way to do it, in all honsty is to just buy a larger hdd (500gb are around 50.00 these days) and just do a direct drive to drive clone from your old HDD to the New one. A Program like Symmantec Ghost (it's not free but there are others out there that are) will clone everything at a bit level and automatically resize the partition to encompass all the free space.

Just Moving the Program Files directory will only serve to make the programs non-usable. Registry entries will not follow the move.

Hi all, I have a software program (an AVI converter) that needs to be installed from the cd everytime I use it as will only allow me to carry out one task at a time (I convert one DVD at a time). The program produces a desktop icon, and installs in my 'programs' list but will only carry out one task. I believe I can save it to the hard drive and install it from there instead of having to keep running the cd, but am not sure how to go about it. Pointers would be helpful. P.

Answer:Saving a software program to hard drive

Simply save it to your Desktop. It will leave an Install/Setup Icon, which you can click on to run whenever you want to.

My hard drive had a bad volume error. I eventually got Windows to boot from a disk. I can access the hard drive but some files are missing. I wondered what the best commercial and best free hard drive content recovery programs were out there? It would save me so much time and effort as I have lost my dissertation.

Answer:Best hard drive content recovery program?

you can get a free demo of Easeus data recovery wizard which you can use to look at the data and see what it could recover. They tell you to use the demo and if you can see the files you are looking for then pay for the full prog about 70$. I used it to recover the data from an external usb hard drive with a master boot record failure.

Windows 10 did an update on my wife's desktop that was incompatible with the Nvidia graphic drivers on it. As a result, the dual monitors no longer display. We took the computer to the local Microsoft store and they were fully aware of the problem and are working on it. But, after two weeks, the problem has not been solved. Meanwhile we bought a new desktop and had Microsoft empty the entire contents of the C: drive onto an external hard drive. They did and showed me that the external drive contained the root directory and program data that contains years of work using Lightroom.

I brought the external hard drive home and connected it. Luckily I can see the User Libraries but not the Program Data.

Is there some way that I can make everything visible in the external hard drive so that I can copy the contents to the new desktop?

Answer:Need to see program files on external hard drive.

If, by program data, you mean applications, then sorry, you're not going to be able to "migrate" the applications from the external drive to your new desktop simply by copying folders. Applications have components installed in many different places, including the registry, and it involves a lot more than copying folder from Program Data to migrate them.

LapLink sells a product (PC Mover) that IS able to migrate apps from one PC to another, but you either have to (1) install it on the first PC and migrate to the second, or (2) have a backup image of the first PC and mount that on the second to do the migration. However, it MIGHT work if you have a copy of the first. I would check with LapLink to see if their product will do app migration in your situation. IF it does, then you will be able to install it on the new desktop and do the migration.

However, there is a second problem alluded to by your last question. Win10 enables FastStartup by default. With this turned on, all partitions that are open when Win10 shuts down are put into a hibernated state -- which prevents them from being accessed until the original machine comes out of hibernation. I ran into this problem when I was dual-booting Win8.1 and Win10TP and using a shared NTFS partition. I had to disable FastStartup on both Win8.1 and Win10 to be able to safely used a shared partition. I don't know if there is a way to access the partitions in the external drive, if FastStartup was enabled in Win10... Read more

Hello all,

I am wondering if anyone out there knows of a program/download/software, preferably on this website, that will do the scan my hard drives, log what is on them and show me how much space it all takes up, where the info is or something similar. Reason, I have so many files on my hard drive and I would like to see them all in some organized listing to choose what I want to keep and what to delete. My main concern is to log and locate all the mp3's that I have. They seem to be all over. I am running slow azz vista so have mercy on me.

Thanks everyone! :major

No one, here, can answer what happened. But, whether you did it manually or it was by default, once a week. You should have everything on "backup and restore". Set it to a date prior to your problem and eveything will be restored.

Does not work? Use system restore. Back up and restore will restore your personal data. System resore returns the OS to the restore point date.

I am not sure as to what you actually lost, but I have given you the answer for either situation.

Hi all,

My vista box is getting a little slow from time. Like everything freezes on the computer, and then I have to wait a little bit and it comes back. Often this happens when firefox has been used for a while. I'm not sure if this is firefox's entire fault, so I was wondering what free program is out there that I can use to monitor what application is accessing the disk. I tried googling but just found a bunch of hard drive monitoring (temperature, fail rate, etc.) programs.

Thanks,

Z

Answer:application hard drive usage program

You should be able to use the resource monitor built into Windows to see what programs are writing to disk.

Third party utilities are available as well, such as ProcessMonitor and FileMonitor.

I have a Y500 model that originally came with a Samsung Spinpoint 5400RPM 1TB HDD + 16GB SSD cache mSATA drive. The original drive failed a few days ago, so I have decided to not only replace the new "spinning" drive with a 7200RPM model but I also bought a Samsung EVO 850 mSATA 128GB drive. At the moment, I have only inserted both drives into the laptop and they are both completely blank. I went into the BIOS and it shows 2 Hard Drives recognized both the 1TB "spinning" drive as well as the mSATA SSD. The mSATA was labeled Hard Disk 1 and the 1TB as #2. Unfortunately, I didn't create my recovery USB media until the original Spinpoint drive was at about 70% drive health according to Acronis Drive Monitor. I didn't receive any errors but I am skeptical on the stability of all of the recovery media that is contained on the USB flash drive. Anyway, what option should I take to make the mSATA SSD the primary boot drive with the OS and programs and the 1TB as the data only drive for everything else? I have been reading a lot of threads here about cloning with Paragon Backup & Recovery and also Paragon Migrate OS to SSD programs, however in this case I have both drives completely blank and basically starting from scratch.  Also, I have read some threads that say with Windows 8 and later you can create a clean install recovery media USB that will work from this Microsoft site (link). I was able to run Belarc Advisor to obtain a product key, however ... Read more

Answer:Y500 - hard drive failed, now ready to install replacement + new mSATA SSD to be primary boot drive

hi Cool_Man,

Welcome to the Forums.

You should be able to activate Windows using the Create installation media for Windows 8.1 link as the product key shoud activate both versions of Windows (8 and 8.1).

If you're already decided what type of installation you need (either legacy or UEFI installation), you can then pop in the USB installation media and install Windows on the mSATA drive.

Note:
If you get problems activating online, you will need to activate by phone.

Hi,

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

P.S.

The computer is a Dell Inspirion 2200 Notebook.

Answer:I cannot boot my install cd from my optical drive? Should I replace my hard drive?

Go into your BIOS and make sure the CD drive is the first boot device
Use the recovery CD that came with your computer and boot to it
